Gold Challenge has launched a range of challenges that gives families the opportunity to harness the excitement around London 2012 by taking on Olympic & Paralympic sports to raise money for charity.

Families looking for exciting activities in the run up to the Olympic Games can now take part in their own Gold Challenge. The challenges include the 5 Sport Challenge Staff and pupils from Madley Brook CP School and Springfield Special where families and groups of School, Witney at the Oxford Sailing Club on Farmoor Reservoir. young people take on 5 Olympic & Paralympic sports, the Family Activity Challenge which encourages families to learn Olympic sports together and the 2012 km Challenge where challengers must cover 2012 km (individually or collectively) in one or more of the Olympic & Paralympic sports. All you have to do is sign up for free and choose a challenge from a range of family friendly options.

Challenges are open to families and those aged 7 – 15. Teams must be made up of at least one adult (16+) and one child between the ages of 7 and 15. Adults can be family members, carers or youth leaders. Under 16s must have parental permission to sign up to the Gold Challenge.

Gold Challenge is partnered with British Olympic Association and Sport England and is part of the official mass participation legacy programme for London 2012.

New kids on the bloc

Kids re-claim their streets UK charity Sustrans has launched a Dream Street design competition to see what children across the country would like to see on the street where they live. The competition encourages children to think about what they would like to see outside of their front door, to make it safer and more attractive for them to get around by bike and on foot. "Sustrans believes that every child should have the freedom to explore, play outdoors, and make their own way to school and beyond,” says Paul Osborne, Sustrans Director of School Travel.

“We're inviting young people aged 7 to 14 to get involved and tell us what kind of street they'd like to see to make it easier for them to travel independently." The competition runs until 31 October 2011 so for your chance to play go to www.sustrans.org.uk/mydreamstreet

Kidsunlimited have opened a new day nursery at Oxford University, which will offer childcare to University staff and students.

Rosamund Marshall CEO said: “We are delighted that the University of Oxford has chosen Kidsunlimited to manage this nursery and are very proud to be opening this new nursery service for their staff and students. Along with the child care and early years education we provide at three existing nurseries for the University, we look forward to creating a fourth environment in which all of the children, parents and staff can flourish.”

NCT postnatal courses The National Childbirth Trust (NCT) postnatal courses are now available in Oxfordshire.

The six week course is aimed at new mums and is a facilitated discussion group focusing on the mother's emotions and her transition to motherhood. Each group chooses the issues they wish to discuss.

Babies are welcome and expected at the sessions, which are informal and held in groups of between four and eight. Claire Cross, postnatal leader, Abingdon branch says: “Not all parts of the UK can offer these courses, but we are lucky enough to have two postnatal leaders trained to Dip. HE level.” Courses are currently being offered in Abingdon, Didcot ,Wallingford and Oxford. www.nct.org.uk

HOW TO CHOOSE A SCHOOL

L

ow interest rates and the race for higher education places and graduatelevel careers mean that an independent education is becoming seen as a highly valuable form of alternative investment for parents and grandparents.

But making education choices can be a confusing, sometimes even worrying process for the whole family. We've seen a trend emerging where glossy school prospectus materials, dinner party banter and the multitude of information available over the Internet make the decision process an increasingly challenging one, since all schools look wonderful and all parents have opinions which they are more than willing to share.

Oxfordshire is fortunate to have a whole range of independent schools, which command international respect for the quality and diversity of the education they provide.

Making a choice whether or not to educate your children at one of these is not just about money - or even academic achievement. Finding the best school depends on understanding a child's individual needs. Relying on league tables will not work, as the "best" in terms of one set of league table criteria may be altogether wrong for many children.

Instead, you should be creating your own criteria, based on some or all of the following issues:

what type of school would suit your child best? Co-educational or singlesex, day only, flexible, or full boarding? what works best in terms of location in relation to your home, airports and other travel links? the budget, as annual fees vary enormously from school to school (from £4,000 to £12,000 for a day preparatory school, up to £18,000 to £24,000 for boarding at a senior school); the school culture, which you and your child would prefer - homely, traditional, prestigious or informal? the religious affiliation of schools;

school specialisms which match strengths or interests of your child; whether only A levels or the International Baccalaureate is also offered; if there is specialist support in areas where your child might need it; what kinds of facilities for teaching, sports, IT and accommodation are offered; whether there are scholarships and bursaries on offer.

Your choice of schools is just one side of the process. The emphasis on standards in UK schools and the competition for places means schools can also be very selective.

Academic needs are the first priority. Be realistic about your child's potential and avoid trying to gain a place at a very academic school unless you are confident of your child's ability. Consider also any other interests your child may have, for example in music or sport, as well as your child's overall personality. Along with an admissions process which may involve a combination of school visits, testing of academic ability and interviews with the head of school, different types of school will have different ideas about the types of pupil they are looking for. It is during this stage in particular that many parents benefit from independent expert insights and advice on UK schools, their needs and expectations, and how to make the systems work best for you.

A personal visit to schools is the only way to find out whether or not you like a particular school and will allow you to meet staff and pupils and experience the overall atmosphere. You may be invited to an Open Day - but the best time to visit is on a normal day during term time. That way you can see the day-to-day routine in place and

the children at their usual activities. In most cases you will meet the Head, who will want to interview your child, following which a member of staff or senior pupil may give you a tour of the school.

After the visits, check the schools' performance against your original criteria.

Each school will have its own strengths but which are most important to you? Your child must also be happy with the final choice, but the decision must be yours. If you have difficulty choosing between two schools the answer is to trust your instincts. The right school is the one which will allow your children to develop to their full potential in the company of liked and trusted staff and pupils, in an environment where they instinctively feel at home.

They cater for those quieter more reflective interests as well as the more active and peopled ones. Indeed, there is a need for selection and balance which, in itself, helps to prepare young people for the future as well as forming and developing lifelong hobbies and habits.

The love of reading for pleasure is encouraged throughout the school. Every child enjoys the benefits of a librarian who has been a professional actress and whose animated story-telling, it appears, persuades even the most unlikely to visit the school library.

Once there, the girls and boys may simply settle down and enter a new or imaginary world of their choice or read and write reviews of books through the on-line Junior Librarian programme which helps to encourage and direct their reading in an interactive way.

Fifty-five sporting opportunities

Older pupils enjoy the challenge of regular Book Club meetings and outings such as that of the Year 6 girls’ trip to the Oxfordshire Book Award presentations to meet the authors Michael Morpurgo and Rachel Ward and the Year 3-6 trip to see The Firework Maker’s Daughter.

The PE Department has facilitated a programme of over fifty-five sporting opportunities and activities each week.

Lively debate, discussion and critical appreciation of books are all encouraged with an aim to develop readers for life.

Environment The GRUBS (Green Understanding of a Better School) programme at The Manor now has representatives from Y6 to Nursery. Arts Music, drama and dance are key parts of life at The Manor and there is an abundance of choirs, orchestras and dance classes. The broad programme for the budding artists includes pottery, face painting, cookery and creative art. Abingdon beats the Americans at Henley

T

he Abingdon School 1st VIII beat St Andrew's School, USA, to win the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta on Sunday 3 July. The Abingdon crew also beat Radley College in the semi-final breaking the course record, set 19 years ago - before the Abingdon boys were born!

Will Davey, Abingdon’s Captain of Boats, said: “Having been building towards Henley for the past five years of my school rowing career, winning the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup was something that I will remember for the rest of my life. The work the nine of us have put in since the beginning of this year was more than repaid this past week with the thrills of racing. I couldn't be more proud to be part of a club with this much support from old and current Abingdonians.

“There is no club I would rather be part of and I believe the support and pride our boat club has is second to none.”

Athol Hundermark, who coaches the winning team, was delighted, he said, “The 1st VIII's sensational performance was the crowning achievement for a squad of boys who have lived and breathed the sport over the past few years.

“The crew saved their best for last as they showed maturity and composure in the semi-final and final to record an incredible win in an event that is the pinnacle of school rowing. The tremendous support from Old Abingdonians, parents, friends and even our closest rivals made it a memory that I will cherish for years to come.”

S

o you have been through the dilemma of choosing the school and now your child is settling into their new environment. Your job is done...or maybe not. Now it’s time to start thinking about how to monitor your child and the school’s progress. Are the teachers doing their best for your child? Did you choose the right school? But how do we keep an eye on things, simply and easily, without joining the PTA?

Getting an accurate sense of day-to-day life at the school is imperative. An easy first step is to look at information readily available about every school. Once a year, look at these figures for your school, and see what’s changed. If an area has worsened, ask your child’s teacher why, and what is being done about it? Check the school is aware of these issues, and has good steps to tackle them. Seek evidence that what is planned is being put into place.

The best way to check that the school is right for your child is to ask the people who work there. Regular meetings with teachers are an effective way to monitor your child's progress, performance and results. Take a morning off work and attend a class if that is possible. Book a short appointment with the Head teacher. Ask them what the school's strengths and weaknesses are and what their priorities are for this year. These will all give you a sense of whether or not the school is delivering its best for your child.

Finally, ask yourself whether your son/daughter appears to be content at school?” If the answer is yes, then that’s pretty good. Ask them about their day and to show you their school work. Ask teachers to show you examples of successful work, compare it to your child's work, and see where your child can improve. If necessary, make a plan with

the teacher on how you can work together to help those improvements.

As a parent, you play an important role in your child's academic achievement. Taking steps to monitor the school and track progress helps you know the school is the right one for your child, and helps your child get the best out of this amazing time.

Off the shelf reports Inspection of schools The Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills (Ofsted) regulate and inspect all local authority schools and independent schools that are not members of the Associations of the Independent Schools Council. The Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) and School Inspection Service (SIS) inspect schools who are members of the Associations of the Independent Schools Council. The Bridge Schools Inspectorate inspects schools belonging to the Christian Schools' Trust and the Association of Muslim Schools throughout England. All publish their reports on their websites.

Jumping for joy!

Thea Gordon-Wingfield, 13, a student from Headington School, Oxford, has won the junior individual title at the Hurstpierpoint College National School and Pony Club Jumping Championships at Hickstead.

This was not the only success for Headington at the championships. The school’s junior team (Thea Gordon-Wingfield, Leah Moorman, 13, and Francesca Sargent, 12) finished in third place in the junior team final.

After winning her title Thea said: “Going into the jump-off mum told me that the competitor before me had not been as fast paced as some, but that he had done fabulous turns which put him into the lead. I thought to myself that if Katie and I go fast and we do fab turns, we could win. Katie was amazing and did everything I asked and we did!”

The successes are a great way to welcome Headington’s new head, Mrs Caroline Jordan, who takes up her appointment in September. Mrs Jordan was educated at St Helen’s and St Katharine’s School, Abingdon, and went on to read geology at St Edmund’s Hall, Oxford. Congratulations, you have a baby! Or two, or even three…

The downside of the arrival of your little bundle of joy is probably that, like most of us, you’re carrying some extra weight and you’ve got a mummy tummy and flabby thighs, not to mention the stretch marks! But when is it time to really think about exercising and just what is out there for new mums?

Exercise at home With a new baby, finding the time to exercise can be difficult. Lack of sleep and breastfeeding can leave you feeling drained of energy, but remember that not only does exercise help your body recover from pregnancy and birth, there’s also some research to show that it can help treat and prevent postnatal depression. From pilates to yoga and running in the park to yummy mummy clubs, there is a whole range of exercise out there that is just for you.

Getting back in shape is not something you can rush. It has taken nine months for you to gain your pregnancy weight, so it may take a similar length of time to lose it. Your body has done an amazing job of bringing your baby into the world, so give it a

chance to recover. It’s also important to remember that if you’ve had a caesarean you should give yourself six weeks to heal before you even think about any exercise.

If you’ve had a normal delivery there are some exercises you can do straight away the ones you'll have benefited from doing all through your pregnancy – the pelvic floor! 2-3 weeks later, it’s OK to do some simple abdominal crunches, providing you have been checked out by a doctor. Your abdominal muscles have been stretched during pregnancy and may have split down the middle so it’s important to be examined before exercising. After six weeks, there are more and more exercises you can try, at home or elsewhere.

Out and about If you want to lose weight as well as tone you will need to do some cardiovascular exercise such as brisk walking or swimming. If you’re lacking motivation, why not try a buggy class in the park? It’s a great way to meet other mums and companies such as Buggy Fit and Pushy Mother hold classes all over the country at a park near you. You can also do a buggy work-out on your own or with friends with the Pushy Mothers Buggy Workout Album – just download it from iTunes. With an hour of motivating music plus expert exercise advice for postnatal mums, it’s like having your own Pushy Instructor on your iPod! For the more hardcore (although they do have beginner’s classes) British Military Fitness run outdoor exercise classes across the UK if you can leave your baby, and buggy, at home.

Nice and warm, indoors If you don’t fancy the park, there are many other classes around that are specifically designed for postnatal women. Yoga is not only great to prepare you before the birth but is also good exercise for new mums.

Many yoga centres offer mother and baby classes where you can do yoga while your baby lies on a mat next to you, (hopefully) gurgling happily. Then it’s baby’s turn, where yoga and music are used to

encourage your baby’s development and flexibility. Postnatal pilates is another option that is great for strengthening your core and burning calories. Many pilates classes offer a holistic approach to rebalancing your body while improving strength, flexibility, posture and stamina.

Gyms and spas Many gyms offer postnatal exercise classes and also have crèches you can use. With your membership you will often be offered a free session with a personal trainer, who will be able to create a training programme especially for you, so take advantage of this.

Go residential If none of this rocks your boat and you think drastic action is called for, there’s always a residential bootcamp. From luxury, womenonly bootcamps to the more military style, if you’ve got childcare arranged and you’re ready to leave your baby or toddler for up to a week, you’ll be sure to see the results!

Whatever form of exercise you choose, remember to get checked out by a doctor before you start, don’t push yourself too hard and above all, good luck!

While it might seem tempting to guide your child to musical, sporting and artistic genius outside the classroom, they need time for just ‘chilling’ too. Liz Baker is a parent, and also a school teacher. In her view: "there is no point in enrolling in every class going.

Don't assume your child will get an academic head start. They will only benefit academically when they are ready, and not before. Remember children get exhausted too - give them time to themselves.

Children should choose and be given a taste of each activity before deciding if he or she wants to commit to it long-term - there’s no gain in putting your child under pressure."

ith the constant wail that schools focus on teaching children to pass tests, adding out of school activities gives your child a chance to shine and have fun outside the classroom. Hobbies lead to new friends, they reveal hidden talents and develop skills that could become a real advantage one day.

Everyone is good at something, and finding it is a huge confidence booster. Just because you drop the ball in PE doesn’t mean you wouldn’t be great at swimming or dancing; the child who isn’t interested in the bright lights can still shine in an arts class or on the sports field.

Babies and toddlers need to get moving New government guidelines have been issued advising all under-fives to exercise for at least 3 hours every day. Toddlers should walk for at least 15 minutes and have long periods of physical play. Babies should be given opportunities for playing, rolling and crawling on the floor.

Recent research predicts that by 2050 two thirds of children could be overweight. In addition, lack of exercise and physicality in young children is also linked with delayed mental development.

Parents can do lots to encourage physical fun for their youngsters: getting children out of the pram to walk alongside; playing in the local park; dancing to music; and going to a physical toddler activity like MAD Academy.

Follow the spooky trail of the 'Monster Mash' at the Blenheim Palace Pleasure Gardens during the Autumn half term 22 - 30 October. Spooky story teller Bill Spectre and ‘Colin the crow in the know’ will be telling spine-tingling stories at weekends, and spooky family tours of the Palace will take place on week days.

In the Pleasure Gardens 10 monster body parts will be hidden in the Marlborough Maze. The challenge is to find the body parts and create your own monster on sheets provided.
