Welcome to this summer edition of Families Suffolk Magazine.

What a year 2020 has been so far - can it really be the summer holidays already?

Although 'lockdown' is lifting, the reality and long term effects of Covid-19 are ever present, and this is certainly reflected in this current issue. Our summer issue is usually packed with ideas for days out and full of useful information about all the different holiday clubs and activities that are available.

As I write this, I am so pleased to see a number of Suffolk attractions opening up again, sadly however we just didn't have enough time to include more information about these in this issue. Please do however keep an eye on our facebook page for regular updates and information about local days out, holiday clubs and family friendly attractions that are safe to visit this summer. I really hope we can get our popular 'What's On' guide back for the next Autumn edition.

Latest News The four key areas of the project will be: 1. An email support service for mums and dads struggling with their wellbeing via memyselfandbaby@ suffolklibraries.co.uk.

2. Telephone counselling will be available for parents who contact the email address but require additional support. A referral can be made for eight free 50-minute sessions of telephone counselling, provided by Suffolk Mind.

Suffolk Libraries has launched a new perinatal support service aimed at pregnant women and new parents in Ipswich and East Suffolk. ‘Me, Myself and Baby’ is an exciting new partnership between Suffolk Libraries, Suffolk Mind, Children’s Centres, Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust and Get Me Out of These Four Walls.

Maternal mental illness affects up to 20% of women and covers a wide range of conditions. If left untreated, it can have significant and long-lasting effects for women and their families. The aim of the project is to help reduce isolation and improve emotional wellbeing for new mums.

The project is being funded by Suffolk Community Foundation through Realising Ambitions – East. The aim was originally to set up a range of library-based groups but the COVID-19 situation means the initial focus will be on supporting people remotely and online.

3. Stay at Home and Play will provide play ideas for babies and toddlers with examples via Suffolk Libraries’ You Tube channel. Activities are free or low cost, giving ideas on how to use everyday items in the home to create fun and nurturing invitations to play.

4. Peer support - Mums and dads who contact the service will be invited to online coffee mornings. These will offer a relaxed and informal opportunity to meet people in a similar situation, share experiences and chat.

The ‘Me, Myself and Baby’ project is available to pregnant women and parents of children under 5 in the Ipswich and East Suffolk Area although anyone can access Suffolk Libraries You Tube account where there are also many other storytime and craft activity videos to share with children.

Summer Reading Challenge and libraries reopening

Sadly this year’s Summer Reading Challenge has been affected by the COVID-19 situation but it’s still running and your children can sign up now. It’s largely running online this year and children will need to create a challenge account on the Summer Reading Challenge website at www.summerreadingchallenge.org.uk They won’t be able to sign up or chat to volunteers in libraries this summer but the reopening of libraries in Suffolk does mean you can now get books for you and your children. For now you’ll need to contact your local library to arrange a ‘select and collect’ bundle of books and other items but the good news is that libraries are open again! For full details about the temporary new opening hours and changes to services visit: www.suffolklibraries.co.uk You can of course still access all the free online services Suffolk Libraries offers including eBooks for children, streaming children’s TV programmes and movies and the many online activities library staff have been running online via YouTube and Facebook.

Getting Back to School The phased return to school over the last few weeks has certainly been a challenge, but one that has been embraced by both teachers and children. Sarah Smith, Head Teacher at Stoke by Nayland C of E Primary School and Nursery tells us more about the last few weeks of their school year.

On Monday 29th June, we opened our doors to children in Years 2, 3, 4 and 5, so unlike many other schools locally, we currently have children attending from Nursery through to Year 6.

We are very fortunate to be based in a Victorian building with lots of different spaces, so we could accommodate our children safely in groups of up to 15 pupils with the additional safety measures we have put in place.

Our Year 6 children have a temporary class base set up in the hall, but they have adapted well to this ‘new normal’, and we have another group of children, who are divided between two classrooms. It has been really lovely to have the children back in school and they have all said how pleased they are to be back.

We recognised that the children needed to have time to adjust to

coming back to school, so we built in lots of discussion and break times into our daily routine.

The children became really absorbed in an art project week focusing on 'The Battle for San Romano' by Paolo Uccello.

Children across the whole school enjoyed finding out about the artist, completing sketches about perspective and recreating the artwork in their own way. We even did some socially distanced sketching in the local woods!

We planned lots of exciting things for the last couple of weeks of term including a sport and well being week, giving the children opportunities to complete activities for the Children's University scheme that we are part of.

In the penultimate week of term, we will focus on transition for September.

We have invited our new Reception and Nursery intake into school

during this week, as we can safely accommodate them in a small group.

We thought it was important to offer this transition time if we could, so that September is less daunting for our new children. Our Year 6 children are also looking forward to the socially distanced BBQ and pizza party.

We do have some children who will be staying at home until September, and are continuing to provide home learning packs for them.

We are fortunate that we are a small school with small class sizes, so that we have been able to offer spaces to more children. I think this has really reassured parents.

Re-opening and what to expect at Suffolk Museums Following the Government’s announcement that museums will be permitted to re-open from the 4th July, many, (but not all), Suffolk Museums will be re-opening their doors this summer.

Those museums that are re-opening this season are putting in place safety measures in line with the current Government guidance. When you visit your local museum, expect to find all your favourite objects and stories, alongside a few new measures designed to keep everyone safe. These include one-way systems, pre-booked visits, limits to visitor numbers and hand sanitising stations at regular points. Before you visit, check the museum’s website or social media to find out opening times and what to expect when you arrive.

Let’s go for a walk Many of Suffolk’s museums have great outdoor spaces. The Museum of East Anglian life has over 75 acres of parkland to explore, whilst West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village is situated in West Stow Country Park, home to 125 acres of unspoilt countryside, trails, heaths, and woodland walks.

Young people are the future of our community, but they are often underestimated.

Inspire Suffolk work with young people every day who aspire to build better futures and demonstrate the energy and drive for change.

However, the economic shock of Covid-19 poses a serious risk of scarring young people’s prospects and general wellbeing. As a result, Inspire Suffolk has developed a new campaign that strives to raise their aspirations and bring the issues affecting young people to the forefront.

Inspire Suffolk’s ‘We Believe in YOUth’ campaign aims to tackle the serious threat posed by Covid-19 to young people’s wellbeing and the youth jobs market.

Funded by Suffolk Community Foundation, the service is free and operates on a self-referral basis, with no waiting list. These sessions provide the knowledge, tools and coping strategies needed to deal with mental health in a positive way.

Services like these are never more needed, with over 71% of people using the service reporting a decline in mental health as a result of the pandemic.

“The impact of Covid-19 on the lives of young people cannot be underestimated. Isolation and uncertainty have an alarming effect on vulnerable groups who may have only just started their journey into the workplace.

Run by Inspire Suffolk, the East Suffolk Youth Employment Service (YES.), funded by East Suffolk Council, offers virtual advice and guidance to young people who are unemployed and looking for new opportunities.

Where classroom teaching and training may have been the norm a few months ago, Google Classroom has filled the void, providing the YES Careers Club, a bespoke, 6-week programme of structured learning. Video conferencing platforms have also played a large part in 1-2-1 CV coaching and interviews, and a brand-new website: www. yessuffolk.co.uk provides an online booking system and jobs board.

Wellbeing Service In response to the increased need for mental health services, Inspire Suffolk have introduced a new service

ecoming a parent is an exciting time but it brings all sorts of new challenges, so to support parents-to-be and new parents a breastfeeding app has been launched, not just for breastfeeding but other areas of concern such as safer sleeping information.

The ‘Breastfeeding Suffolk’ app is built for mothers who are thinking about breastfeeding or have just given birth to their new born baby. The app features helpful tools that allow mothers to read daily information cards related to their breastfeeding cycle, record child development milestones and information on various support services.

The app also contains important contact details for local organisations and links to other helpful information such as children's centres in their area through GPS, to ensure new mothers are well informed throughout the full breastfeeding period.

Keep Calm and…

Babies don’t have the words to tell us what they want, and sometimes it can be tough knowing why they are crying and what to do. But never fear - these parenting hacks will help you to be able to cope with crying.

1. Seeing if baby needs a nappy change 2. Cuddling or carrying baby Try stroking your baby’s back firmly and rhythmically, holding them against you whilst you walk around.

3. Checking baby’s temperature Baby might be too hot or too cold.

4. Feeding baby when they are hungry ow that you have your brand-new baby, you’re probably wondering what to do next.

Babies do not come with a manual. They cry, and it’s not always easy to know why. It could be that they are hungry, too hot, too cold, or that they just feel like crying!

Sometimes babies are tired and need sleep but are fighting to keep themselves awake because life is so interesting – just as many adults do!

Babies cry because it is the only way they can communicate. They don’t have the words to tell us what they want, so sometimes knowing what to do can be tough. But trust us – you are not alone on this!

Suffolk County Council's Public Health Department have put together some useful Parenting Hacks to help you when baby won’t settle.

Babies usually prefer to be fed on demand than to a schedule. They will cry when they are hungry!

5. Rocking baby in a pram or a cradle 6. Going for a walk with the pram It might be good for you to get a breath of fresh air as well.

7. Taking baby on a car or bus ride Rhythm and movement can help baby to feel calm.

8. Singing, playing soft music or talking gently But some babies prefer rock, folk or pop!

9. Playing white noise Such as a vacuum cleaner or washing machine.

10. Moving to a calm space If baby is over-tired or over-excited, try moving somewhere dark with not too much to look at.

These are just a few helpful hints, but remember all babies are different – it is just as much about finding what works best for you and your baby.

The physical effects of lockdown

Exercise... Some people might recoil at the mere mention of the word, but for others it is simply a way of life. Since the world was turned upside down recently, people’s way of life and subsequent levels of exercise has changed – some for better, some for worse.

Alpha Physiotherapy based in Martlesham, Ipswich reflect on what they have been seeing in their online Physiotherapy consultations, and share more about their professional backgrounds, and specialist services.

“PE with Joe” (AKA The Body Coach) has encouraged families to exercise together and offered some exercise routine to a school week (albeit not necessarily the same amount of natural exercise children get through play).

For other families, juggling work life with home schooling has relegated exercise to lower on the priority list.

This change has brought people to our virtual “door” who have either been having issues due to their increased activity such as taking up a new sport and sustained injuries, or conversely, those who have become stiff and sore from their relative inactivity and change of routine (e.g. teenagers and screen time).

Prevention is better than cure It’s a bit of a cliché, but it is true. It is why we attend regular dental check-ups, our cars have yearly MOTs, and immunisations were developed. At Alpha Physiotherapy we have a passion for sport and exercise - Jimmy has spent 10 years of his career working with professional footballers and Lyndsey has a background of dance, having been a dancer herself. We understand what it takes to be good in your sport, and prevention of injury is paramount.

As part of our specialist sports service, we offer screening appointments which are akin to an “MOT” - if you have sustained a recent injury, want to get to the root of recurring pain or injuries, or if you want to help identify areas that could be worked on to prevent injuries occurring in the first instance, then screening can provide you with the answers.

These aren’t just for the elite athletes amongst us – children approaching puberty find these particularly useful as their bodies change rapidly around that time, plus anyone (including adults) who is taking up a new activity or planning to increase the amount of exercise they complete. We also offer a dance-specific screening for young dancers.

On-Call Firefighter On-call firefighters are a vital part of the Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service. They provide an efficient, effective service that gives emergency cover across the country. In Suffolk, on-call firefighters make up 66% of the workforce and are generally located in rural communities, small towns and villages.

What are on-call firefighters?

An on-call/part time firefighter is a person who is ‘on call’ to respond to a range of emergencies.

They are doing everyday jobs (for example, shop workers, office workers, mechanics, etc) until the call comes, then they become professional firefighters. Oncall firefighters do not just fight fires.
