BAM Karaoke Box in Westminster has opened on Sundays for a magical Kids Disney Brunch Club with a party feel. Families North London sent our reviewer along with his family to check it out.
“Our Kids Disney Brunch Club experience at BAM Karaoke Box was magical from start to finish! We were warmly greeted by Anna and Elsa, which thrilled the kids – our three-year-old daughter couldn't believe her eyes!
The first half featured fun musical quizzes, keeping everyone engaged with lively dancing and singing along to Disney classics.
The second half was a karaoke experience, where we had private booths to belt out our favourite songs, we really could.....let it go!
The atmosphere was fun, interactive, and perfect for all Disney fans, especially ages 3 onwards. We would definitely return for another round!”
Suitable for kids, teens and their families. Enjoy delicious food, interactive games, face painting, and two hours of private karaoke. Plus, every child gets a special goodie bag to take home! Sundays 12:30pm-3pm. BAM Victoria, 74 Victoria St, London SW1E 6SQ. https://uk.bam-karaokebox.com

Empathy, hugs and distraction are the first port of call for any parent trying to calm an anxious child.
Over the longer term, cognitive behavioural therapy is one of the most widely recommended therapies. But, if anxiety is a regular feature of family life, you might like to explore the ever-increasing range of calming products. Here are some ideas to try.
Weighted blankets and clothing
Inspired by American scientist Temple Grandin, who invented the hug machine, occupational therapists began using weighted blankets for children with sensory issues. These blankets are now marketed as a sleep aid and stress reducer. Check out Sensory Direct (www.sensorydirect.com) for a wide range of options, and weighted clothes.
Ear plugs
Ear defenders and noise cancelling headphones are helpful for kids with sensitive hearing. Ear plugs shaped like a tube are relative newcomers and are popular with sound engineers and teenagers at concerts. Flare Audio (www.flareaudio.com) make a range called Calmer Kids.
Breathing toys
They may look like typical cuddly toys but these fluffy buddies can make cute breathing and gentle snoring sounds. Our heart rate and breathing speed up when anxiety strikes.
Manufacturers claim these toys help children to regulate their breathing as they hug the toy and start to match the breathing rhythm. Evora's Koala (www.evoraofficial.com) has a soft lightup belly, a soothing up and down motion to accompany a breathing sound and a heartbeat.
Fidget toys
Although there’s no strong scientific evidence that fidget toys work, many people say the distraction is calming. Fidgets by UK-based Amelie (www.fidgets-by-amelie.com), has toys designed for different sensory preferences.
Squeeze seats
The Lalloo version of a Squeeze Seat offers kids a safe, secluded personal space, great for reducing sensory overload, with options for tight-fitting or oversized seats at not-for-profit website Fledglings (www.fledglings.org.uk)
Mindfulness remotes
Designed for children age 5-12, Stix Remotes (www.stixmindfulness.co.uk) are handheld devices that guide kids through screen-free mindfulness exercises. With built-in voice instructions, they offer activities ranging from breathing exercises to movement-based tasks, promoting calmness and focus. Developed in collaboration with psychologists, Stix says it aims to improve emotional regulation.

Reading for fun has life-changing benefits yet only 1 in 3 UK children say they enjoy it.
A World Book Day charity study revealed two big issues. Reading-avoidance is being passed down the generations. Parents who don’t consider themselves readers are less likely to read with their children and their children are almost twice as likely to be negative about reading and don’t read for fun. And, a third of all children say they are not allowed to choose what to read at home or at school. How to get more “fun” into reading even if you never learned to love it yourself:
Praise them: two in five children think reading is best when they feel like they’re good at it.
Embrace your child’s choices: Comics and simple, funny books count. Libraries give you free access to e-books and dozens of kids’ and tweens' comics on Press Reader. Around a quarter of kids said they would read more if books helped them learn about things they were interested in or featured favourite TV, film and game characters.
Reading AND screens, not reading OR screens: Reading apps and audiobooks count too. Library membership gives you free access to many audiobooks.
Make time to read: Either to your child – children who are read to, often choose to read more themselves – or have “family reading time” where everyone reads books at the same time, for 10 or 20 minutes a day. Try it for two weeks.

If your child is in Reception or starting school this year, you've likely encountered the term "phonics" or even the more formal Systematic Synthetic Phonics (SSP).
Wondering what it all means? Here's a brief run-down of phonics, plus ideas for how you can support your child.
Phonics has consistently been found to be effective in supporting younger pupils to master the basics of reading, with an average impact of an additional five months’ progress. It is especially beneficial for ages 4 to 7, as they begin to learn.
Concepts
Phonemes – the smallest unit of sound in a language. The word ‘cat’ has three phonemes: /c/, /a/, /t/.
Grapheme – is the written representation of a phoneme: the letter ‘a’ represents the /a/ sound.
A blend – a group of two letters that retain their individual sounds. A consonant blend could be: ‘bl’ as in ‘black’ or ‘gr’ as in ‘green;’ ‘st’ as in ‘star’ or ‘nd’ as in ‘hand.’ A vowel blend could be: ‘ea’ as in bead;’ ‘oa’ as in boat and ‘ee’ as in ‘see’.
A digraph – a combination of two letters that produce a single sound, such as ‘ch’ or ‘sh’ Vowel digraphs include: ‘ai’ as in ‘rain’ and ‘oo’ as in ‘moon.’

A dipthong – a complex sound that begins with one vowel sound and flows into another, such as ‘oi’ as in ‘coin,’ or ‘ou’ as in ‘house.’

Flashcards are very useful. There are also apps available. Use either to practise sounding out letter combinations. For books to support phonics development, the classic Usborne Phonics Readers or Read with Oxford are reliable places to start. Keep an eye out in your local charity shop or find them in most bookshops or online.
Songs can be fun and foster phonics development. A quick search on YouTube will yield far more results than you’ll have time to get through!
There are board games and card games that have been adapted to support phonics learning. The list of these is extensive. Again, look online and see what appeals most. Finally, if intervention is required, consider using online phonics programmes. There are many available, some free of charge. Ask your child's school which they recommend.
Boost your child’s reading confidence and love of books! Expert-led online sessions supporting reading homework, revision and home schooling for ages 4-7. Flexible 5 and 10-session packages, Half-term and school holiday options available - BOOK NOW for July/August. For further information email info@trentonp.co.uk
Childhood mental health and neurodiversity are becoming increasingly recognised as key areas where early intervention can make a lasting difference.
Studies show that one in six children now experience mental health challenges, with anxiety, low mood, and difficulties in school among the most common issues. Neurodivergent children, including those with autism and ADHD, often face additional challenges such as sensory sensitivities and difficulties with emotional regulation.
As a parent, nothing is more distressing than watching your child struggle with their emotions, school life, or friendships. Whether it's anxiety, low self-esteem, sensory challenges, or difficulties linked to neurodiversity, knowing where to turn for the right support can feel overwhelming.
If your child is struggling with mental health, ADHD, or social difficulties, you don’t have to navigate this alone. The right support can make all the difference.
The Family Futures Wellbeing Hub is a therapy and assessment service for North London families which offers a range of research-backed therapies designed to help children regulate emotions, improve communication, and build confidence. Whether your child needs Occupational and Sensory Integration Therapy to manage sensory sensitivities, Creative Arts Therapies to express emotions, or Theraplay and Talking Therapies to strengthen relationships, Family Futures provides tailored support in a safe and understanding environment.
Many families approach Family Futures for Sensory Integration assessments which can be crucial in securing an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) to access extra support in school. For children experiencing Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA), the team offers expert guidance to help reintroduce learning in a way that feels safe and manageable.
●Family Futures is currently offering a FREE consultation with a therapist to parents who would like to discuss their child’s needs and work out what would best support them. Call 020 7354 4161, email wellbeinghub@familyfutures.co.uk or enquire at www.familyfutures.co.uk/wellbeing-hub where you can also find free Family Futures webinars on Sensory Integration, Gender and Sexuality and other topics.
