Cats, Cuddles, Coffee & Cake

The concept of the ‘cat cafe’ began in Taiwan, where much of the housing is apartment blocks and pets are prohibited. The cafes were designed to give people a space to interact with each other and with cats, which are said to offer therapeutic benefits to their companions- such as lowering blood pressure and reducing stress and anxiety.

The idea grew in popularity and has spread throughout the world, with the number of cat cafes in the UK increasing. Cats Meow Kittea Cafe is Stirling’s very own cat cafe and is firmly rooted in the original ethos of caring for others. Open to the public and accessible to all (including full wheelchair access) from age 8+, the café also works with many social enterprise groups and care organisations, understanding how uplifting the company of cats can be. All guests are welcomed and everyone made to feel at home.

If you love cats and cake, this is for you. The nine resident rescue cats will entertain you during your visit, while you enjoy a large slice of delicious cake and choice of hot or cold drink (the food and drink all prepared in a cat-free environment). First climate change teachers to be taught in the UK

Teachers across the country have the opportunity to become the first climate change teachers accredited by the UN. This one of a kind climate change education programme will use innovative learning technology so that teachers can learn at home or on the go. The aim is to make sure teachers can help protect the climate by educating their students with the latest data and information on climate change, sustainability and the green economy.

Education provider YPO sponsors this FREE global education programme. All you have to do is sign up to Harwood Education’s UN CC: Learn Teacher Academy.

The course, which takes just 8 hours to complete, explores the science that supports the existence and effects of climate change on children, cities, human health and gender.

Falkirk’s ‘New Future’ Employability and Training Centre offers free use of computers for those who are job searching, needing to prepare/ update CVs and covering letters, or even submitting online application forms. Help and advice is offered from the friendly team of staff.

They offer computing classes, with one-to-one support if required, to show clients the basics of computing to enable use of programmes such as email and Word documents. Support is also available for those needing assistance with their Universal Jobmatch account.

New Future’s job board is regularly updated with employment opportunities advertised within Falkirk and nearby surrounding areas.

Doune the Rabbit Hole – festival fun for all the family this summer!

Doune is 10 years old this year and super excited to be in double figures.

We are feeling older and wiser and ready for more. What have we learnt along the way?

1. Kids hate being told what to do!

The children’s tent runs to a ‘free-play’ ethos which means the play should be freely chosen and directed by the child. This means they are free to use the materials and equipment however they choose inside the kids’ tent.

2. There is nothing worse than standing around waiting while your children play. All of our workshops are open to the whole family – from puppy handling to extreme origami there is a world of new experiences awaiting you to share together.

3. Experience is everything! And we want you to experience it all. If you don’t go home giggling and talking excitedly about trying something new then we will be gobsmacked. From cuddling ferrets and alpacas, sock wrestling, or taking part in a play, we will have something new for everyone.

4. Kids love to imagine the world as it could be and not how it is.

We invite them to climb aboard our pirate ships or mix up a ‘cake to end all cakes’ in our Doune the Rabbit Hole in-house bakery.

5. We will have children-only toilets.

We will have plenty of seats in and around the family field so you can soak up the fun from the comfort of an armchair (well a camping chair, but it’s much the same).

8. Kids can make some amazing things when provided with unlimited craft materials. We have an ever expanding collection of shiny, inspirational stuff to satisfy even the most demanding crafters. There will be pop up craft workshops and a knitters’ corner so they can learn new skills as well as build the costume of their dreams.

9. Food is vital and getting kids to eat can be tricky with so much going on. We encourage families to bring their food to the kids’ tent and sit round the little tables to share a meal. We also have an hour break between the kids’ activities finishing for the day and the start of the silent disco. This allows time to nip and get your dinner without missing anything and be back to strut your stuff before bed.

10. Rest and quiet are as important as having mega fun or your batteries will run out before the end of the weekend. We have an onsite library to borrow books and snuggle up in our cosy corner so you can find a wee rest spot even in all the madness.

Foster Care Fortnight runs between 13th - 26th May this year and is an annual campaign to raise the profile of fostering and to help show how foster care transforms lives.

Did you know that around a fifth of in care Falkirk young people have to live with private agency carers outwith the Falkirk area? With your help we can ensure that there are sufficient foster carers to keep local children closer to home and help them maintain links with their families, local communities and friends.

There are children of all ages who need fostered, although in Falkirk we particularly need carers who will foster teenagers, sibling groups and children who need permanent foster placements. A stable family environment provides a child with a strong foundation which can give them the chance to aspire to great things.

Foster carers come from all walks of life and applications are welcome from everyone who thinks they have the space in their life to offer a home to a child. The Council’s fostering team provide high levels of support, excellent training and development opportunities with competitive fees and allowances.

Fostering is life changing. Offering a caring, nurturing environment can improve a child’s life enormously; while as a carer, the emotional rewards are huge.

More protection for mums returning to work New parents returning to work could receive greater protection from redundancy under new government proposals.

The government is proposing that mothers returning to work from maternity leave will be protected from redundancy for a period of six months.

The announcement followed research which found that one in nine women had been fired or made redundant when they returned to work after having a child- or were treated so badly that they felt forced out of their job.

It is also considering giving the same protection to parents returning from adoption or shared parental leave.

Free healthy meal and outdoor play on the way A free healthy meal will be given to all children who attend a funded early learning and childcare session, the Scottish Government has announced.

The new scheme will also mean that, from 2020, children in funded childcare will be guaranteed outdoor play sessions – regardless of where they live.

Announcing the changes, the Minister of Children and Young People, Maree Todd said “This is a unique opportunity to transform the way we deliver early learning and childcare, which is why we are using the National Standard to ensure no child in ELC goes hungry or misses out on the benefits of outdoor learning, exercise and play.”

These initiatives are part of the government’s plans to almost double the provision of early learning and childcare from 600 hours per year to 1,140 hours by 2020.

Children are learning about wider issues of equality through a range of experiences in the nursery, including the celebration of festivals, world languages and customs. THE Rules for Becoming a Happy, Healthy Pre-Teen

If you’ve got a child between 8 and 12, print these rules off and read them to your child as a bedtime story – over and over again! Explain that the rules are like gravity. You don’t need to understand them. They just work.

Rule One

You will Receive a Body and a Colour

They’re yours for life, so accept them.

Look after your body by eating good food (most of the time) and sleeping well (always). Exercise every day. It’s the only body you’ll ever have. Revel in whatever colour you are. Unless you’re green in which case, wrong planet dude!

Rule Two

Love is All Around

The world is full of lovely people but there are a few haters, who make a lot of noise. Social media makes it easier than ever to spread bad stuff. If someone says something nasty take a step back and think it through. Yes, it’ll hurt. But is it really that bad? Being hated by a hater? It’s what they do. They do it to loads of people.

They do it because, deep down, they actually hate themselves. Rise above it.

Stay nice. Yes, even to the haters. It’s hard but they actually need to be loved!

Rule Three

You Are Made of Actual Magic

You possess what’s called ‘ordinary magic.’

It’s your in-built ability to be super-resilient.

Ordinary magic isn’t about forcing yourself to be positive or pretending the negative isn’t there. It’s about allowing yourself to be upset, and bouncing back stronger. We all possess this magic, otherwise known as ‘time.’ Time magically changes things.

Eventually.

Rule Four

Be Kind

Always. It’s a happiness superpower and it’s free.

Rule Five

Be a good friend. To Yourself.

Here’s a new word for you: sonder – it means that everyone (and I mean EVERYONE) has the same insecure thoughts as you do. Everyone (and I mean EVERYONE) is riddled with self-doubt.

Everyone (and I mean EVERYONE) has a nagging inner voice that keeps telling them they’re a bit of an idiot.

challenge it. Notice when things go well. Recognise when you’ve achieved something. Pat yourself on the back.

Rule Six

Listen to the Right People

Criticism and harsh words can really sting.

And there are plenty of people who stand on the edges of life, throwing negativity around. When it happens to you (which it will), rise above it. The trick is to ignore the criticism, unless it’s delivered by someone you truly respect and care for. And who cares for you too.

In which case the criticism will be well intended.

Rule seven

Life is a Rollercoaster

There are highs and lows. When you’re up, your friends know who you are. When you’re down, you know who your friends are. That’s how it works. Just because one person doesn’t seem to care for you, doesn’t mean you should forget about everyone else who does.

Rule eight

Breathe

My research has uncovered an amazing statistic, something the media fails to report. The biggest killer in the UK, bigger than road accidents, cancer, heart attacks, falling off ladders and tripping over squirrels is ‘Not breathing’. It’s literally the biggest cause of death across the world.

It’s a scandal.

So breathe. And keep breathing. It’s quite important. My advice: Spend 3 minutes breathing well, 5 times a day.

Big slow breath in.

First, breathe out while you consider how you feel right now.

Big slow breath in again.

Second out-breath is gratitude, what have you got to be grateful for right now?

Big slow breath in again.

And your 3rd breath out is how do you want to feel? Consider and choose an attitude that will work for you going forward.

BOOM! You’re back in the game.

Rule nine

You will Forget All these Rules at Birth

This last rule is a real bummer! You literally forget that love is all around. You actually forget how to breathe properly. Luckily, you have a fabulous family. If someone has taken time to print these rules off for you or read them to you, they love you.

Cycle Proficiency Training Stirling Cycle Training are running on road cycling beginners’ courses during the summer holidays, 1-4 July & 13-16 August 2019, for children aged 7 & 8 and 9–13.

The courses are suitable for children who have done no previous cycle proficiency training or those who feel they need more practice to cycle safely on the road.

The training starts in a traffic free area before moving on to quiet roads.

’m Nikki Reid and live in Alloa with my husband, Jamie, and Georgie who is 15 months old. I work for a corporate company as a Programme Manager, full time on condensed hours, but on my days off I run The Bubba Bump Brunch Club. I’m a qualified Community Food Educator and a previous food blogger but The Club is all about community spirit, brought together by food, not education.

in public and starting to recede from everyday life… I was a shadow of my former self. When we eventually worked through this terribly tough stage and I was able to visit cafes and restaurants with friends, I realised I wasn’t the only one who would get ‘the fear’ when their little ones had a meltdown. Many places also made us feel unwelcome and as if we were a burden rather than valued customers – all we wanted was a place to gather over grub.

So, with this in mind, I set up The Bubba Bump Brunch club as a trial in November 2018, to give local mums a comfortable home from home environment where they can meet others, let their children socialise, get some adult chat for a couple of hours and not feel the pressures we can all sometimes feel when visiting cafes or busy town centres. The appetite – excuse the pun – from the local community seemed to be there and I received positive feedback, so we’ve carried on, taking things month by month.

What inspired The Bubba Bump Brunch Club?

When Georgie was first born she suffered from colic and reflux, and I had trouble feeding her which led to me struggling to leave the house, worried about her crying uncontrollably

What would you say to expectant parents or parents of wee ones thinking of coming along to a Brunch Club session?

Give it a go! Everyone who attends is warm and friendly, with many having come on their own the first time (as opposed to with a friend). We have a changing area, travel cot and pram available for use all on one level and you are welcome to use a quiet area in the house, or garden, to settle or feed your little one.

What is your vision for the Brunch Club going forward?

Ideally we would build up a network of confident Brunch Club hosts which means a wider variety of locations and days of the week could be offered. It would also be a massive achievement to be the recommendation on the lips of Health Visitors and relatives of new parents who say: ‘Oh, have you heard of The Bubba Bump Brunch Club? You should head along!’

Favourite brunch dish?

At the moment I’m loving the taste and easiness of our feta cheese and spinach frittata but a bacon hash made with new potatoes, spring onions and cherry tomatoes is always my personal favourite ‘treat’ brunch.

Favourite thing to do with your child on a rainy day?

To stay in PJs all day, play music loudly, sing, dance and clap hands (my

daughter loves a good beat!).

Favourite thing to do with your child on a sunny day?

To play on the grass, go a walk or have a shot on the swings (me too!).

Why do you like living where you do? How child friendly is it?

It’s a quiet yet lively estate, surrounded by woodland and with awesome views out to the Forth from the local golf club. It’s very child friendly with families around, good parks and friendly neighbours.

Favourite shop: Muircot Farm Shop – a lovely café, a gem of a farm shop with local produce and cracking views of the Ochils!

Favourite park: Technically not a park but Gartmorn Dam is a fabulous outdoor space. With an easy to follow circular walk and brilliant wee café, it’s a perfect break away on your doorstep.

Favourite children’s club or class: I found the local Bookbug classes very welcoming, busy and inclusive.

Favourite night out without kids: A trip to Glasgow with my husband to listen to live music, enjoy Mexican food and remember our carefree earlier years.

Best planet saving tip: Recycle common ‘blue bin’ items into free toys for your little one. Georgie loves her pasta filled plastic bottles and old salad boxes filled with strips of ribbon.

No parent should be without: A fellow parent ‘buddy’ who is going through the same sagas as you.

Parenting pet hates: Judgement of one another – I don’t know a single parent who isn’t trying every day to do their very best. It may not be your way but respect it is theirs.

Favourite family holiday spot: Aviemore! I have been going there with my family several times a year since I was 11 years old. Now that Jamie and I have a family of our own we see it in a whole new light and always feel we have ‘reset the batteries’ when we visit.

Georgie has been five times in her short life already.

Finally, Lonely Bouquet Day normally falls in June, with people receiving flowers from strangers to brighten their day. Can you tell us about the related idea you had earlier this year?

The bouquets have been distributed! In honour of Mums – around Mother’s Day – I wanted to do something that was a bit of fun in recognising how awesome we all are. The hope was for the flowers to be discovered and find special homes. It’s not often we get random gifts with no strings attached so I hope this brought a smile to the faces of a few and they took a moment to feel appreciated – being a Mum can be difficult, but we are all doing great!

Offering Role Models Often the instructors on summer camps provide a rare opportunity for a child to interact with an adult who is not part of the family unit or teacher. Health and Wellbeing FOMO and Low Self Esteem

By Soren Kenner and Imran Rashid Absorption into our own private screen universe is pulling us all further and further apart. Look at how our gait has changed: ten years ago people walking down the street were upright and orientated outwards. Today they are slouched forward looking into the smartphone they hold in front of them. At the playground, parents stare into their phones while children’s calls for attention go unheeded.

Studies have shown that the hormone oxytocin which helps facilitate human bonding and closeness (among other things) tends to drop in both parents and children when they ignore each other in favour of the tantalising online universe. Another study that tracked thousands of people over many years, found a sharp drop off in their level of empathy over the last ten years. Coincidence? Maybe not.

What is it inside those screens that is so magic and powerful that it compels your attention away from where you are? The answer is mostly “smoke and mirrors” –– you are being elegantly manipulated by very savvy marketeers using what is known as “addictive design” to keep your attention riveted. Fixating your attention and reselling it to advertisers is how they make their living.

Online tribalism For many young people, being part of the group and gaining social acceptance weighs heavily: so heavily, in fact, that young people often organise in what can only be described as “online tribes” - groups that have internal ranks and hierarchies (often governed by how many likes or how much attention one gets).

This behaviour is not particularly healthy and examples are rampant of young people being scared to miss out on anything (also known as FOMO). The UK Medical Examiner recently reported that as many as one in five young

people wakes up during the night to check their social media feed.

There is a clear correlation between teens (especially girls) who use social media extensively and issues ranging from stress and anxiety to lowered self-esteem and even lowered empathy.

However, not everyone gets hit by every possible side-effect - or even any at all. And the good news is that making a change from unhealthy online habits to healthier ones is pretty straightforward.

What can you do as a parent?

Be observant Is your child suffering from mood swings, changes in sleep patterns, trouble concentrating, being secretive or spending more time online than offline? Do you have the feeling that your child would rather disappear into the online universe than reside in the real world with friends and family? These are warning signs that should not be ignored.

Lead by example Be here, now, in the present and interact with your children. Show interest in what they do, ask questions, do things with them. Talk about issues in an open and non-confrontational manner. Getting your kids to talk about what they feel and experience builds trust and will make them more likely to listen to your suggestions and advice.

Make their phones less addictive Get your children to turn off notifications on their phones and in their social media feeds.

This way the pull of the phone or tablets reduces and children have an easier time pulling away as needed.

Put screen time on a schedule Make an online schedule with your kids –– set the parameters for usage clearly and stick to what you have agreed.

Introduce alternatives Try out some of the many good alternatives to being online. Play board games, solve puzzles, read a book, draw or learn to play an instrument. The real gold here is doing these activities together.

Yes, children are at risk but there is plenty you can do about it. It requires being observant and takes discipline on your part, but you can save your kids from smartphone burnout - and also get to spend more quality time with them.

Gardening can play a huge part in a child’s health and wellbeing, with over 1.5 million children gardening at school in the UK. As well as simply good outdoor fun, school gardening has been shown to have many additional benefits for children, including making them more physically active and feeling happier and more connected with the natural world.

It is normal for children to have fears, but they can become problematic if they stop them from leading a normal life. Claire Winter looks at what to do when a fear becomes a phobia.

WHAT IS A PHOBIA? According to the NHS, a phobia is an overwhelming and debilitating fear of an object, place, situation, feeling or animal. It’s much stronger than a normal fear about a test at school or thunder clap. Children with a phobia feel the fear every time they see or experience the thing that scares them and will often go to extreme lengths to avoid it.

THE SYMPTOMS OF PHOBIAS For adults, phobias are often accompanied by physical symptoms such as palpitations, nausea, chest pains, difficulty in breathing, dizziness, and sweating.

Some children may also experience these symptoms, but they are more likely to cry, shout, scream or run away from what is scaring them. A phobia may start as mild nervousness at a certain situation and develop to full-scale panic attacks and avoidance.

Phobias aren’t just severe anxiety; the anxiety is turned into a phobia by avoidance. A phobia can often follow a period of stress and can be quite distressing for a child.

Natalie Costa (www.powerthoughts.co.uk), a coach who supports children with their emotional and mental wellbeing, encourages parents to be careful about how they react to their children’s fear: “Being mindful as parents/caregivers about how we respond to fears and phobias is important. Most phobias are learned and we model them when we are younger.

As adults, watching our words, what we say and how we behave in front of our children can have a big impact.”

She also discourages avoidance. “Often, we may want to avoid further distressing our children, so we avoid discussing an upsetting event (for example, going for an injection/fear of needles).

However, if we can encourage our children to talk through the scenario, from beginning to end, asking them how they felt, what happened, and acknowledging the scary feelings, we can then draw attention to the fact that they made it through and survived to tell the tale. This helps them make sense of the event; they know their feelings matter, but it also highlights their strength, placing emphasis on the fact that they made it through versus focusing on the ‘scary thing’.”

Parent, Amanda Ross, says that, for her daughter, it was vital not to avoid the feared situation: “Our eight year old started to be phobic about dogs after a stray approached her aggressively. She’d always been nervous of them but, after that, the fear seemed to get worse, until she would cry if she even saw a dog in the distance. To help her, we would drive to the park and sit in the car and watch the dogs. We talked about what the dogs were doing and thinking and even gave them funny voices. When she made sense of how the dogs behaved, she got more comfortable. Gradually she agreed to go to places where dogs would be on leads, and then off leads. She’s miles better now.”

Psychotherapist and Hypnotherapist, Nick Davies says: “A childhood phobia is created when a young person experiences something that overwhelms them and they have no coping mechanism for it, and it becomes a traumatic event. Their brain creates a ‘generalisation’ for the event so each time they are reminded of it i.e. see another spider or dog they go into panic mode as their brain thinks they are in severe danger.”

Nick has developed a treatment called the BLAST® Technique which assists with post traumatic stress, phobias and anxiety. He also teaches the “Tapping” protocol which may help a child old enough to do it. To find out more about the technique, go to www.blasttechnique.com.

Our readers prefer Families Magazine to the Internet!

Last year, we conducted a survey across the UK asking readers to tell us what they find useful about our magazine and how likely they would be to respond to advertising in it.

We were delighted to receive almost 500 responses - and by the wonderful feedback you gave us.

More than 70% of our readers said they were highly likely to respond to advertising in our magazine or had already done so. That’s fabulous news for our advertisers and for our readers, because it means we can carry on making the magazine better and better!

A whopping 79% of readers told us that they use the magazine to research ideas for local family activities or classes and clubs for children and an equally impressive 74% said they use it to plan family life.

Many of you also told us that you find it easier to plan family activities and entertainment using Families Magazine than using the Internet.

You told us that using the Internet to research and plan can be time consuming and confusing, involving lots of searching online for useful information.

A common complaint seems to be the “endless trawling” that digital research involves.

A typical response came from a reader in Fallin who said: “It’s all packed into a few pages so saves the searching online for hours on end to find things for us to do as a family.”

Readers also told us that they really value having a physical magazine in their hands in which information relevant to family life has already been collated and is presented to them in an easy-to-digest format.

For example, a reader in Dunblane said: “I especially like the out and about section where I highlight events we would enjoy as a family and can plan our free time around these on the calendar.The recommendations from other parents is always a winner as they usually know exactly what other parents look for in a venue”.

We were also really happy that large numbers of you reported that Families Magazine makes your lives easier and less stressful and saves you time. A reader in Bo’ness told us: “I find Families Magazine a super useful tool to have in family life as it gives you a wider picture of events, things to do and information of surrounding shops and facilities that I personally wouldn’t know about without this aid”.
