PARENTING

Digital Parenting by Naomi Bartholomew, Headmistress, St Catherine’s Prep School

M

any of us have seen the enormous benefits of technology during lockdown or times of enforced isolation this year. It has enabled us to stay connected with loved ones and to ‘socialise’ online. Whilst some have grown tired of the family Zoom call or quiz night, there have clearly been huge advantages to the use of technology in these challenging times. Indeed, many of our children have grown in confidence in their digital skills and we could possibly learn a thing or two from our welleducated children on this topic! However, the risks for children are there and are potentially more prevalent than ever as many children are now equipped and confident with using video calls and messaging to stay connected with friends and family. It is more important than ever that parents are aware of the settings on any devices that their children have access to. Are you confident that you know who they are communicating with online? If you would not drop your child off at the house of their named online friend and leave them there without you, then the same rules should apply with who you feel comfortable leaving them with unaccompanied online. For some children, moving between online friendships during lockdown and then returning to real life friendships in school has been Nov/Dec 2020 22

challenging. Some children have become used to communicating in very different ways to real conversations. Another tip I share with children in school is that if you would not tell your Grandma then you probably shouldn’t be sharing or making that comment online. Some children felt very isolated during lockdown with parents juggling the demands of working from home, endless emails and video calls and as we navigate the current uncertainties, it is key to agree some device free family time which includes everyone at home, parents as well. Even if it is a hot chocolate date and chat at the kitchen table or a quick walk, there need to be times when devices are put away and children feel able to talk or just be with you. Naomi Bartholomew is Headmistress at St Catherine’s Prep School, Bramley. For more information about the school, please visit www.stcatherines.info familiesonline.co.uk

EDUCATION

Non-fiction November! When children are learning to read, fiction is sometimes favoured over non-fiction. This could be due to the lack of accessibility to good quality non-fiction books, particularly at lower reading levels. We need to encourage children to reading more non-fiction, as it is a necessary life skill to gain knowledge and underpins all other learning. It can be tricky to get non-fiction books that are at the correct reading level. Reading Chest, the children’s book rental service, has a huge range of nonfiction titles, which are all book banded to ensure children have access to books and subject areas that interest them at just the right level of difficulty. Monthly membership starts from £9.95 and includes a book bag, bookmark, reward chart and stickers. Enjoy discovering new things together with Reading Chest!

EDUCATION

Educating for the future By Arpana Valji The World Economic Forum recently stated that 65% of today’s jobs will be non-existent for the children that entered primary school this year. The workplace of the future is going to be looking for communication skills, growth mindset, creativity and resilience. The schools that will equip our children with these skills are those that are focussed on the following aspects of education.

Independent learning Children need time to think and work independently on tasks, to explore and follow their passions. The focus on testing and exams means that not all schools can prioritise this.

Discovery and collaboration Children need even more opportunities to learn about and initiate collaboration. The opportunities for global connection today are endless and children need to learn the art of working creatively with others.

Integral and immersive It’s proven that 90% of the facts you memorise and regurgitate in a test will be forgotten. Learning can be more effective when it’s the result of a more immersive experience like making a video or a drawing.

Reducing stress “Success” in education is currently defined as doing well in standardised tests. Testing as a whole can increase stress and impact children’s mental health. Some schools are introducing mindfulness, yoga and meditation as extra-curricular options, but to have a lasting positive impact, they should form part of the regular curriculum. familiesonline.co.uk

Creativity and passion Frequently, the school curriculum does not offer children enough opportunities to discover and pursue their passions. The more access children have to alternative and creative activities at school or in after-school clubs, the better. When children find something they truly enjoy doing outside the classroom, they are one step closer to unlocking a happy work-life ethic in the future.

Adaptable teaching styles How does your child learns best? How can your child’s school accommodate this? You can support your child differently outside of school too. For example, if they’re really struggling at maths, turn this learning into a fun game or challenge.

Celebrating teaching School staff are frequently overworked, under-paid and under-valued. Teachers and teaching staff are surely most motivated when appreciated and supported by the school and by parents. A simple thank you is a wonderful start! Arpana Valji is a parent and founder of www.schoolpluskids.com, a learning platform that teaches children how to build core life skills, develop, grow, succeed and be happy. Nov/Dec 2020 27

CHRISTMAS

Families Magazine caught up with Philip Day who plays Dame Dominique Derrière in this year’s Godalming Panto - Beauty and the Beast What can we expect from the Godalming Panto this year? Action packed fun, energetic dance routines, lovely songs and colourful costumes all to make the audience beam with laughter from beginning to end.

You starred in Jack in the Beanstalk last year in Godalming – do you have any ties to Godalming or Surrey? Hampton Court is my home (not the Palace!) so I have an easy commute to Godalming. I was so glad to be part of the Guildford Fringe’s 1st professional panto at Godalming’s Borough Hall last year. I think it is important to have a local, affordable panto so that everyone, young or old, rich or poor, can experience live theatre knowing they are in a safe environment with an exciting vibe. A pantomime is usually where a child experiences the magic of a theatre for the first time. All the staff at Godalming’s Borough Hall are so welcoming and last year we all worked as a team to ensure Jack and The Beanstalk was the success it proved to be.

What is your favourite panto memory? There are many. I once appeared in a star-studded charity panto performance at Drury Lane Theatre while I was in the West End run of The Boyfriend. We were asked to perform some of our routines from the show. Back stage rehearsals were fascinating alongside Sir Nov/Dec 2020 36

Elton John, Sir John Gielgud, Frankie Howard, Fenella Fielding, Maureen Lipman, to name a few.

What do you like most about your job? Making the audience laugh. It really is so rewarding to see people giggling away and having a good time. The adrenaline rush is so good for us performers too! Plus - the backstage camaraderie. The show would not be the same without it! familiesonline.co.uk

CHRISTMAS

How long does it take to get dressed and made up as a Panto Dame? The Panto Dame is always the first actor to arrive at the theatre and the last to leave! Yes, you’ve guessed why! The makeup is trowelled on and after a somewhat sweaty performance, or three - it is all chiselled off again! All worth it though! I do like hiding behind the mask and going on stage with a cheeky, saucy, outrageous performance just to see the audience having fun. The short answer could have been 45 minutes!

Is there anything you don’t like or find challenging about playing a dame? If the script is good - there is nothing to worry about. This year I am blessed with some very funny lines and I think the audiences will find Dame Dominique Derrière a tonic lovable, daring, caring and full of fun! What’s not to like?! Well, maybe the sweat under some of my costumes!!!

What’s the funniest thing that has ever happened to you on stage? It’s hard to select the funniest onstage experience as there have been many. When I was a young, slim man with hair and dashing looks (alas, those features dashed off decades ago!), I played the role of Prince Charming for many years. In one production the Ugly Sisters were particularly hilarious BUT the actors playing them were also particularly risqué and outrageous. They would often make me repeat my lines to the audience as if they could not believe what I was saying and ended up shoving me around the stage so that I was in the wrong position to familiesonline.co.uk

meet Cinderella. I guess you had to be there, but you get the picture. Bobby Davro and Linda Nolan were very funny to work with as Buttons and Cinderella.

What measures is the production taking to ensure social distancing is maintained? The capacity of the venue is usually 270 but for this year we are selling just 80 seats per performance. This is so we can ensure that all the audience are properly socially distanced from one another. The pantomime would normally be about two hours long including an interval, this year we have adapted the script so it is now 75 minutes long with no interval. This just prevents the audiences from mixing as much as possible. The venue is perfect in terms of making it COVID secure. The size of the Borough Hall means we can do all of this without affecting the enjoyment of the audiences watching the show. We have also implemented a one-way system where the audience enter the venue one way and leave another so they never cross paths with the next lot of punters!

Beauty and the Beast runs from 12-26 December at The Borough Hall, Godalming. CLICK HERE for more information and to book tickets.
