June/July 2017

Contents Welcome to our Winter Days Out & Children’s Parties Issue Winter with families: I picture myself leaning into the arms of my beloved, warmed from the glow of our open fire as the children chatter happily and play a charming quiet game of cards at our feet - LOL. I know winter is coming because I can no longer put off changing the pants of my wet baby by rolling to the other side of the bed for an extra half an hour snooze; the cold air drops the temperature to ice bath levels almost immediately and we lie there shivering (Yes, he sneaks into the bed…. And?) I love winter, it’s a welcome respite from mozzies and swimming lessons. It’s also a nice chance to spend evening hours picking the perfect Air BnB cabin and planning weekends away… and buying car snacks, packing all the clothes and games to spend three times the effort to get half as much done. Instead of a family trip I now just do a guided meditation where I pretend I’m going for a long weekend with the family and presto! I’m exhausted enough to fall into a deep sleep. Luckily Families Magazine has intrepid investigators out in the field braving the cold to report back on the very best Winter Days Out! From active adventures, scenic tours and family fun (e.g. the kids have a good time and the wifi is solid) you can trust us to (strawberry) pick the good times and never mention the ‘winter family fails’.

Education

Why our schools are changing! Schools are Changing. But Why?

Once upon a time the typical classroom was filled with desks and chairs lined in neat rows. Students were told what to think and were expected to complete knowledge-based tasks. When the earth had done a full orbit of the sun, each child would move to a higher level. Why were schools structured this way? And why are they now changing? There are two drivers for innovation in education: (i) the changing nature of the workplace; and (ii) engagement.

The Changing Nature of the Workplace

Schools were established in the 19th Century. They were structured like the factories they were built to serve. They put children on an assembly line, producing like-minded graduates. This cookie-cutting approach to education was appropriate for its time given the majority of graduates would go on to work in blue collar industries. Agricultural and blue collar industries are on the decline on account of automation, whereas service and creative industries are on the incline. For our children to be equipped for these industries, they need a different skill-set than that that of the industrial era. Instead of memorising outdated information, entrepreneurial and interpersonal skills will prepare children for success beyond their schooling years.

Engagement

Latest neuroscience research shows that the brain’s limbic system is geared towards threat and reward. When in a threat state, the sympathetic nervous system initiates a ‘fight or flight’ response. When in a reward state, the brain openly engages. We must responsibly create an atmosphere in which children feel safe, secure and comfortable. The environment must be appropriately predictable, yet provide opportunities for engagement, empowerment and challenge.

What does this mean for our schools?

Let’s start with those desks and chairs. Occupational therapists report that desks and chairs do not suit 83% of students. Students will naturally gravitate to positions that suit their body type when given choice. Why should classrooms be cold and sterile, when they can instead resemble an airport lounge? The modern classroom features a range of learning spaces that caters for extroverts, introverts and students with learning needs. Classrooms are

School are changing, but why? We talk to Jane Mueller, who explains why it’s important that schools change and keep up with today’s society.

equipped with agile furniture, enabling teachers and students to change the configuration of the furniture according to the learning task at hand. The design of learning experiences is limited only by the imagination of the teachers and students; not by the layout of the traditional classroom. A comfortable and attractive classroom results in engaged learners who strive to reach their potential. While the physical space of the modern classroom may have the wow factor, it’s the way learning experiences are designed and implemented that is key. The Australian Curriculum can be organised in a way that students can participate in meaningful projects that focus on solving real-world complex problems. These projects can be individualised, acknowledging that, just as children grow physically at different rates, they also grow academically at different paces. There is a shift away from end-of-term tests, and instead a focus on learning and improvement. Students understand themselves as learners and use this awareness to grow and stretch themselves. Students strive to be life-long learners strong in creativity, collaboration, adaptability, critical thinking and global awareness. The role of teacher is different in the contemporary classroom. In the past, the teacher was the holder and distributor of knowledge. Now, children take control of their learning and the teacher becomes more of a facilitator; a coach who knows when to encourage and when to challenge and stretch the individual.

The Future of Schooling

The next time you find yourself asking, ‘Why do schools need to change?’ take a moment to rethink how the world has changed since your childhood. Think also about how your workplace has changed over time. If schools do not keep pace with the world, we rob our children of their future. Be excited about the future. Trust the very committed educational professionals who share your dream of a magnificently successful future for your child, and who make research-based and evidence-informed changes as a result. Jane Mueller is the Principal of Living Faith Lutheran Primary School, Murrumba Downs. She is passionate about creating learning environments that address an ever-changing society in order for children to be equipped for their future. Education

THEN & NOW

10 ways schools have changed. The face of schools and education in Australia is changing. Classrooms are changing. Learning is changing and it is not just about technology. How is education and learning different now to ‘back in my day’? We talk to Catherine Lunney, the Primary Learning Leader at Southern Cross Catholic College to find out what is changing and why! created and implemented, providing every Australian student the same educational entitlement.

‘hopefully’ holds the floor for 20%, allowing students 80% of the time to be engaged in their learning by doing.

CONTENT vs CONCEPT

PASSIVE vs ACTIVE LEARNING

In past generations, the learning focus in most classrooms (approaches like Montessori being the alternative) was all about the content i.e. the who, what, when and where. Students acquiring knowledge and practical skills was the lesson objectives.

THE CURRICULUM Since we became a nation each state has fought a battle (rivalling a State of Origin), over who had the best curriculum and hence the better education system and superior intellect. From the 1980s a conversation was initiated that discussed the creation of a national curriculum. This conversation turned into negotiation and hence the Australian Curriculum has been

8

Your Local Families Magazine June/July 2017

Today we refer not to the lesson objective but the learning intention and the focus is placed on providing opportunities for students to move beyond knowing and doing to understanding; understanding not only the information, but more importantly the concept. Acquiring conceptual understanding provides a strong foundation for their future learning and life experiences.

TEACHING vs LEARNING In modern terminology, the classroom has been ‘flipped’. ‘Back in the day’ the teacher talked for approximately 80% of the lesson and the students worked for 20%. Today the teacher

The passive learner sits, listens, answers the teacher’s questions and does as told – this is typical of the learner ‘back then’. Today the active learner not only answers questions but also learns to pose open, fertile questions that will lead to in-depth investigations. The student is active in action and actively engaged in the learning process from co-constructing the learning intentions and success criteria, to taking ownership of the learning activities and assessment tasks.

DISCIPLINE Changes in school disciplinary practices are as much a result of global cultural change in regards to our understanding of societies responsibility towards children in general, as they are about changes within education. Gone is corporal punishment, the cane, verbal abuse,

Education sarcasm, loss of learning time and the writing of mindless lines. Today we focus on repairing relationships and harm through an inclusive practice that includes everyone involved. This approach shifts the focus away from punishing children to what is, and always should be our core business of learning: learning about our rights in relationship with our responsibilities to others.

PLAYGROUNDS - WHAT’S IN AND WHAT’S OUT Work Place Health and Safety regulations have necessitated marked changes to playgrounds and play. What’s out: See-saws, swings, slippery dips, marbles, unsupervised games and use of equipment, bare feet, tackling, a game of Brandy etc What’s in: Protective cushioning on goal posts, adventure playgrounds designed to develop gross motor skills, balance and coordination, compulsory fully enclosed shoes, compulsory hats … Why: Student safety first and foremost.

TECHNOLOGY We’ve gone from the slate, to the ink-well, exercise book, pen, personal computer, laptop, iPad and even to the mobile phone. The classroom therefore is no longer the bastion of learning. Just as the ‘Flipped Classroom’ has changed the relationship dynamics within the classroom, so too has it changed its

location. Digital technologies today allow the teacher to reach out beyond their space in the school to be present in the student’s home, on their holidays etc. A lesson taught, recorded and uploaded can be revisited as often as needed, giving students the opportunity to learn something they may have missed or not understood the first time.

RESOURCES Once upon a time the resources available for teaching and learning consisted of books, blackboards, blocks and other basics. Today the list of resources is endless and exciting, and their use is as divergent as one’s imagination. The digital classroom, the robotic classroom are not concepts of the future … they are here today and will only grow in application as the technology itself becomes more readily available and sophisticated.

ASSESSMENT When I was at school I remember only four kinds of assessment, and these included a) the worksheet, b) the test, c) the project and d) the essay. Today the assortment of assessment tasks is as wide ranging as the many ways we can communicate; these might include podcasts,

creating movies, multi-modal presentations, art installations etc Today more students can effectively share their learning because of the many modes and mediums with which they can express themselves.

LEARNING TO READ AND WRITE Learning to read and write has always depended on the explicit instruction of decoding, encoding and comprehension skills. Both THEN and NOW students learn the sounds, letters, sight words and origin of words that make up English. If there is a difference today it is that these important fundamental building blocks of literacy are also learned in context with literature and life. Teaching Character to our Children

The Cambridge Dictionary defines character as the particular combination of qualities in a person that makes them distinctive. Character is also defined as the moral qualities of a person. But can character be taught? And if so, how? St Margaret’s School, in Ascot writes for us… These days we receive too many examples of poor behaviour through the news, social media, reality television, even some of our politicians, that the tide feels against us when it comes to teaching character to our children.

Can you teach character? Principal of St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School Ros Curtis says that while ‘teaching character’ cannot be taught like a subject, schools can do much to inform the growth of an individual child and nurture ‘good character’ through the provision of personal development programs, community service opportunities, and high expectations from all students as to their standard of behaviour. The saying ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ is certainly true when you speak about building and nurturing character. Children who are surrounded by good role models will instinctively pick up those character traits. And it is the responsibility of all members of our community to be those role models – from school staff and parents to the children themselves. Ms Curtis said the school recently launched “The St Margaret’s Way“, which is an explicit expression of the type of community the school aspired to build every day, where every member feels valued and respected. The St Margaret’s Way is underpinned by the school’s six values Spirit, Faith, Integrity, Courage, Respect and Passion – representing the character traits being nurtured in the students.

These simple acts are demonstrated and recognised on a daily basis in St Margaret’s Primary School, where students are encouraged to actively live and uphold the school’s values. A values-based education is an approach to learning that seeks to implement values into a student’s everyday learning, encouraging them to develop a secure sense of self, and to become more empowered to take responsibility for their own learning and behaviour. The values are very much about character building and shaping students into the responsible citizens we hope they will become, especially when it comes to contributing positively to their school and to society. From the moment the students enter the classroom in the morning, they encounter the values which are upheld and demonstrated by their teachers. They constantly learn about the importance of using values both inside and outside the classroom, and this is particularly highlighted as part of their religious values education. When a student actively demonstrates one of the six values, they are rewarded with a values sticker. During chapel at the end of each week, the students who have received this sticker are asked to stand up and are given a round of applause.

The sticker itself is simple.

Choosing a nurturing environment

“We really want the students to be happy about the acknowledgement of their act, rather than for any great tangible reward, so the sticker is about as basic as it can be,” said Head of Primary Angela Drysdale.

A parent comment in the 2015 Independent Schools Queensland “What Parents Want: Key Findings” reflects this: “My choice was not about fees, religious affiliation, or academic results, it was about a nurturing and fulfilling environment for my boys, where I know they will enjoy actual learning.”

Demonstrative acts of the school’s six values can be found everywhere. The primary girls show ‘courage’ by stepping outside their comfort zone when speaking on assembly or leaving home to go on school camp. The Sustainability Garden Program is about showing ‘respect’, where the girls actively look after the environment. ‘Respect’ for the school and themselves is also shown when the students wear the uniform correctly.

One of the many reasons families will choose a school will be the fact the values upheld there match those upheld in their own home.

Ms Curtis said this sentiment rang true for St Margaret’s parents, and emphasised that positive organisational culture didn’t just happen. “It needs to be consciously built, continuously nurtured, and constantly protected.”

Values-based education

On her own initiative, a young primary student picks up some rubbish in the playground and places it in the bin. Her teacher takes notice, and later, on returning to the classroom, the student is

10

awarded with a values sticker, acknowledging the value of “respect” for the environment, she has demonstrated through her actions.

Your Local Families Magazine June/July 2017

Mrs Drysdale says very often the girls are surprised by the recognition. It’s like being ‘caught-out’ doing something good. The girls are often acknowledged when they least expect it; they were not seeking recognition, simply practicing the values as part of their daily lives. Parenting

Hints & Tips for Responsible Parenting We all know what a difficult job parenting can be. There is no instruction manual and we are often left with conflicting messages from our families and well-meaning friends who tell us what they went through with their little one. Despite the confusion, there are some sensible things we can do to meet the individual needs of each of our children. Understand child development It is valuable to understand the phases of development that all children move through. With this understanding, we can consider how developmentally appropriate their behaviour is due to their age. This allows us to depersonalise their tantrums and refusals, and assists us with knowing how to help them develop the skills they need to build upon. Between the ages of 0-24 months children are tiny little people who have very limited cognitive (thought) and physical ability. They look to us for attachment and bonding and this is the time when it is crucial we help them feel loved and nurtured and instil a sense of safety and security. We need to provide a safe space for them to learn and grow and we need to respond with kindness and attention to their needs. Children learn in this stage whether the world is a safe or hostile place, based in large part on the way in which those closest to them respond to them. From two to three years old children enter an exploratory phase where they are beginning to make a more independent assessment of their immediate world. They begin experimenting with cause and effect….if I cry, does Daddy, Mummy or another loving carer come running? How many times can I throw a spoon on the floor and how many times will it be retrieved? How do the people close to me respond when I throw a tantrum? Understand parental influence Parents (or those closest to the child acting in the parental role) are the most powerful influence in a child’s life in the early years. Because of this, it is important to understand that everything we do role models to our children what is and is not acceptable behaviour We know that children are like sponges – they parrot what they hear and they copy what they see. When they see a close caregiver getting angry, they may find it scary yet come to understand that this is how one deals with frustration and gets one’s way.

While anger is an appropriate response to certain situations, and children do need to be exposed to the full range of human emotions, we must ensure that we clearly explain to children, even very young children, why we feel what we do, and how we can work to control and change our emotional responses. We know that emotional awareness and intelligence predicts life and academic success. Children will largely learn how to understand and control their emotions through the modelling exhibited by their parents. Teach and demonstrate personal responsibility It is completely and utterly ‘normal’ for children to act out on impulse, demonstrate selfishness, exhibit egocentrism (I AM the only thing in the world), and it is important that we gently and kindly help them understand there are other ways of being. The trick, of course, is that to teach our children how to be responsible and thoughtful, we as parents need to demonstrate these skills to them. This can be hard when we are so tired and wrung out that we can’t find the energy to be bigger than our base instincts. We need to help our child understand that yes can’t always be the answer to every one of their requests, listen to their concerns and help them come up with solutions, teach them to apologise for their mistakes and let them see us apologise for ours, and teach them to forgive others their mistakes by forgiving them theirs. In order to do this, we must be emotionally available and connected to our children and their lives. When children feel close to their parents, they want to be just like them. Connection and communication is most of what parenting is all about. When our child feels the connection, they are open to our guidance. When we show them generosity, kindness, honesty, compassion, responsibility and all the other things we want them to be, that is the person they are most likely to become. Family Health

WINTER FEET WARM & NEAT The chilly weather is finally here, and that means some of us start to feel the cold, especially in our feet! We talk to QUT Health about how to keep our feet happy and healthy in the colder months! THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGGIES Ugg-style boots or other warm slippers are a great solution for around the house for both adults and kids. But even when it’s cold, our feet still perspire, so make sure they’re worn with socks to keep them clean inside and prevent bacteria from building up. No-one likes smelly slippers! Bamboo, cotton and other natural fibres are a great choice, as they’re absorbent and breathable. Some socks even come with antibacterial or antifungal treatments these days, which is a nice bonus but they can be expensive. Regular socks are fine for most people, as long as kids know not to “recycle” them – everyone should get a fresh pair every day (and of course more often if they’re participating in sports).

BOOTS MADE FOR WALKING? The issue with Uggies is when they’re worn around town as a fashion statement, or even a big day of spring cleaning or renovating at home. Most people really need more arch support if they’re doing a lot of steps that day, so the flat footbed can lead to foot and leg pain over the next couple of days. Swap them for a pair of sneakers if you’re at home, or a nice pair of supportive boots can be a stylish and warm option for going out. If you have orthotics that you struggle to wear with Summer footwear, it’s also a perfect time to take advantage of the cold weather and wear them more often. Boots generally provide excellent ankle support, as long as they’re not the elastic-sided kind. Laces, Velcro or zip-up boots are all great as long as they fit well, just watch the heel height. No greater than 2 ½ centimetres is best for adults, and around one centimetre for kids. Look for heels with a wider base and definitely avoid stilettos – they can get caught in grates or cracks and lead to a painful injury! Pointy-toed boots tend to put extra pressure on the small joints of your foot and can even compress the nerves, so they’re best avoided.

12

Your Local Families Magazine June/July 2017

I STILL LOVE MY SANDALS! In Queensland, it’s often warm enough in Winter to still wear sandals, at least in the daytime. That’s totally fine, but we need to be aware that the dry weather at this time of year, along with indoor heating and fireplaces, can tend to dry out our feet. It’s not just a cosmetic issue, as dry and cracked heels can lead to infection, but it’s easy to prevent. Slather on some moisturiser every night at bedtime – any basic body lotion will do, or sorbolene or vitamin E cream is a good choice – and pop on a pair of socks so that the cream really soaks in. If you do start to develop a lot of hard skin on your feet, your podiatrist can help – especially important if you have other health issues such as diabetes. If you have cracks in the skin, medicated creams can cause more of an issue, so seek some medical advice from your doctor or podiatrist. When choosing sandals for yourself or kids, ideally look for a pair that has a bit of an arch contour on the footbed to give some support. Obviously, you want a good fit, and make sure the straps will hold the foot securely. Thin straps can dig in or leave you having to grip with your toes, which can lead to foot, shin or Achilles tendon pain from the muscles having to work too hard just to keep the sandals on your feet. Sandals with Velcro or clipfastened nylon straps can be great for both adults and kids because of the wider strap around the ankle and heel, and are often washable too.

WHAT ABOUT MY HOTTIE? Hot water bottles are one of the lovely compensations for the cold. Most of them come with a cover these days, but if yours doesn’t have one, just make sure there’s something between it and your feet. A blanket, towel or socks on your feet can provide a barrier to make sure your feet don’t get burned overnight. Snuggle up and enjoy! If you need advice on footwear for adults or kids, help with foot and leg pain, gait assessment or treatment for foot conditions, the QUT Podiatry Clinic provides high-quality and inexpensive podiatric patient care to the community. The clinic has a dedicated sports clinic, paediatric facilities, surgery services and a high-risk foot clinic. Choosing a Family Car Parenting brings with it all manner of big decisions, least of which is choosing the right car for your family. It’s a huge investment, and it’s going to be a big part of your life, plus your cargo is precious – you want to get it right. Car manufacturers understand the needs of families, and more and more are designing features that make life with kids that little bit easier. So how do you know which of those features you should be looking for? There’s a few basic things to consider before making your choice …

Size does matter

How much to spend

Not only does your car need to have enough seats, it will need to have enough room for all ‘the stuff’ that you’ll be transporting.

Not only is the initial outlay important to your budget, but ongoing costs are something to consider as well. Make sure make sure you’ve accounted for on-road extras, insurance, fuel economy and the cost of servicing and maintenance so you don’t get any nasty surprises.

First you need to ensure that you have the appropriate number of seats with anchor points for tethering your child safety seats. Will your pram fit in there? Will your pram PLUS groceries fit in there? Is there enough space for the soccer kits, the folding chairs … the dog?

Safety first Car manufacturers know that we parents are worried about keeping everyone safe. You can look for features such as: ABS brakes, electronic stability control and multiple air bags, park assist, rear parking sensors, reversing cameras, hill descent control, rain sensing wipers and anti-roll bars on the suspension.

Many manufacturers, like Mahindra, offer – as standard with their the XUV500 Automatic family SUV – a 5-year limited warranty, 5-year free roadside assist and 3-year capped price service. Bonuses like that are a positive option to add into your considerations.

The extras can make life easier Families can look for extras such as: leather seats, satellite navigation, bluetooth music/phone connectivity, cooled storage boxes, wireless tyre pressure monitoring, extra cup holders for convenience and more.

Whatever car you choose, you need to make sure it works for you and your lifestyle … and serves as a good family taxi too. Happy hunting!

As a general rule, children under the age of 5 must be accompanied by an adult in the water at all times within arms’ reach. Kids six to ten years require supervision at all times, even if there is a lifeguard present. And kids eleven to fourteen should be checked on regularly by their parent or guardian.
