The Clever Resource for Thinking Parents

April/May 2017

Contents Welcome to our Family Health Issue The best part of being responsible for my family's health is using my Arts degree to solve issues which clearly need medical science to address. Forget the two-speed economy, I employ a two-speed medical plan: either it’s a real problem (i.e. blood nose, gaping leg wound, aggressive vomiting) in which case you can have some coconut oil and walk it off, you’ll be fine, OR present me with a series of vague symptoms and a general sense of unease and I will empty our bank accounts in the quest for answers (which is usually apple cider vinegar). Recently we went to a $410 allergy clinic to work out why my toddler was breathing weird and we found out he’s allergic to cats! You might think “money well spent!” but we don’t have a cat so it’s a very confusing diagnosis. We now have a nasal spray which states explicitly not to use on anyone under 12 (he’s three) and the suggestion that we only wash all bedding in hot water and only use the dryer (too many cat hairs outside it seems) plus vacuum more (of course). I took a moment to look around the pristine white office for a hidden camera but no, the Doctor believed he had ‘solved’ the issue! I feel like the hard work of maintaining this cat free environment wasn’t properly factored into the picture- can we not just remove my son’s respiratory system and replace it with a robotic one?! What is medical science even up to in those laboratories? What I’m trying to say is I’m allergic to logic and intolerant to reason but I’ve managed to control the symptoms with wine and Netflix. Wishing you vomit free nights and healthy kids who definitely don’t only get sick on work days and before important events.

RELEASES APP FOR

BUSY PARENTS

PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT

Local Ipswich parent Anne-Marie Walton has brought her dream into reality and released a brand-new app to make life easier for all parents, available to download now. The Wantu app is a way for busy parents to spend quality time with their kids through customised and specially suggested learning-based activities. The app suggests short 15-30 minute activities tailored to one or more of your kids’ age and development. The parent then selects 3 activities they would be happy to do and the app hides them in coloured balloons for the child to "pop" and feel in control of choosing their own activity. With the everexpanding selection of activities, parents will never have to worry about their kids getting tired of the same old games. You can find them online and download the app at www. kidswantu.com or on Facebook to keep up to date (and even get some bonus activities in the festive seasons).

TOP 10 TIPS TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR PARENT-TEACHER MEETING

Most schools hold formal Parent-Teacher Meetings to provide a valuable time where the teacher and parent can partner to share insights and gain understanding of the individual child's progress. To ensure these short 10-15 minute meetings work successfully for you as the parent, here are our top 10 tips to help you make the most of this precious one to one time with your child's teacher.

1. Arrange for younger or older siblings to be cared

for and mobile phones to be on silent so that the conference time can be devoted to discussing your child's learning journey, without being distracted by other needs and concerns.

2. Arrive before your conference time is scheduled so

that you can view your child's portfolio samples of work if this is available. This can be an enlightening time!

3. Have your questions or concerns written and

prepared before the conference and ask if they can be addressed before the teacher begins sharing information.

4. Ask for clarification of a term or phrase if the teacher is using

8. Always discuss your own child's progress as it is not appropriate to 9.

compare one child to another. The teacher, as a professional, will only discuss your child's progress with you as that child's parent. I f your child is present ask them to share the positives about their learning journey so far, and to share with you what they are most proud of and what they wish to improve for next term.

10. If time has not allowed you to cover all your questions, thank the

teacher for sharing and request that another mutually suitable time to meet be arranged.

Remember that your child's growth, success and happiness at school will be dependent on a strong and respectful partnership between parents and the teacher. The goal of this partnership is always to work together for your child progress, well-being and learning journey at school.

and talents outside of school so that a broader understanding of your child as a valued class member is gained.

Your time in attending the Parent-Teacher Meeting sends a strong message to your child and the teacher that you are keen to support your child with their learning. Following the meeting, it is important to have parent and child discussion time about your child's strengths and areas for improvement to set learning goals and develop a plan to work together, as this can be a very affirming time for you and your child. Your child needs to know that you are their number one advocate and that you are willing to help and support them at home to achieve their goals at school and in life.

- WHY OUR KIDS -

Need Art!

IS ART A KEY FACTOR IN OUR CHILDREN’S FUTURE SUCCESS?

Art is one of the most significant historical records of human society. It shows us the history and evolution of culture. Knighted in 2003 for his enormous inquiry into the significance of creativity in the educational system and the economy, Sir Ken Robinson stated, “Creativity is as important as literacy and numeracy,” and that, “We don't grow into creativity, we grow out of it. Or rather, we get educated out if it.” So, why is Art still a contentious subject in education? Well, there are a few reasons.

FEW PEOPLE FEEL THEY ARE GOOD AT ART When asked, most non-artists boldly state that they “can’t even draw a stick figure!” Many feel that gallery art defies understanding and even question Art’s overall purpose. This limited understanding of the potential of Art has led to widespread apprehension. The mindset that “you have to be born with it” persists. For example, adults do not advise against studying Mathematics because their child does not innately comprehend complex trigonometry. We understand that learning complex skills takes time. Yet many adults approach artistic skill as unteachable. Compounding this idea is the outdated notion that Art cannot pave the way to a wellpaid or rewarding career.

When we foster the ability in our young people to construct something tangible from their imaginations, we prepare them for a career yet to be defined…. A VARIED APPROACH Unlike traditional subjects, Art is taught differently across primary schools; some students are taught daily by accredited Art teachers, while other students are offered rudimentary, monthly activities. This leads to the impression that Art is an optional endeavour, when in fact the thought processes inherent in Art underpin those required in every other subject. Recently, Christine Marmé Thompson, Penn State Professor of Art Education said, "Seeing Art as expendable indicates a deep misunderstanding of the role it plays at the center of learning.” As toddlers, we are all artists. We are slowly taught out of our originality, by well-meaning adults, who offer praise when a child stops ‘scribbling’ and begins drawing symbols we easily recognise. For adults who underwent this process themselves, it can be difficult to know how to support their children’s artistic endeavours, particularly when their children demonstrate talent.

8

Your Local Families Magazine April/May 2017

SO, WHY IS ART SO IMPORTANT?

Primary school Art is essential in building capacity. Secondary school Art acts as a gateway to self-reliance in adulthood. The advantages of what children can learn by practicing Art cannot be underestimated; they rapidly build a growth mindset. Their motor skills, decision-making and problem solving skills are enhanced, leading to improved confidence, flexibility and, of course, creativity. Art also allows young people the time to relax and engage with peers, teaching them that work can be pleasant and rewarding. Like reading books, walking in nature, praying, or meditating - Art allows children to be mindful. Art’s place in our future cannot be underestimated. Several popular studies point to the likelihood that 65% of the jobs available by 2030 are yet to be invented. Our children face the challenge of preparing for careers that may not exist yet! In many circles, Art has been tipped as the primary subject needed to build the capacity required in these careers.

HOW CAN WE SUPPORT OUR CHILDREN IN ART? Like developing any skill, acquiring knowledge requires persistence. Remind children that frustration is a great indicator that they are learning something new, and if they persevere, they will naturally improve to the next level. Some questions we can ask children are: • “Why have you used that colour?” • “What do those lines/shapes mean?” • “Tell me about what you’ve drawn here.” These types of questions help to avoid the verbal trap of praising visual choices, and show that we value imagination. Listen to their intended message and respond with enthusiasm towards their originality, persistence and creativity.

ART IS THE FUTURE Each new skill acquired, in Art and in life, will stay with a child through to adulthood. When we foster the ability in our young people to construct something tangible from their imaginations, we prepare them for a career yet to be defined. Our world is facing change more rapidly than at any other time in history and schools are demonstrating a shift in educational priorities to meet this change. How can parents prepare their children for the future? The simple answer is to encourage creativity at every opportunity. If supported without judgement, Art offers solace and allows a palpable emotional communication for children, while preparing them for the amazing future we have all yet to imagine. Even if we do not feel creative ourselves, it is in everyone’s best interests to help children mine their creativity, for them and for all of our futures. Written by: Tamara Gerlic, Art Teacher, Hillbrook Anglican School. Located in Enoggera, Hillbrook is a Co-ed Secondary School. You can see them In Action on Thursday 3 August 10am – 2 pm. www.hillbrook.qld.edu.au

YEAR 9 NAPLAN WHAT PARENTS NEED TO KNOW WHAT IS NAPLAN?

WHAT DOES NAPLAN DO?

NAPLAN stands for the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy. NAPLAN is a series of tests that occur at Years 3, 5, 7 and 9, which tests a student’s understanding and achievement in numeracy, reading, writing, spelling, punctuation and grammar. It is an Australia wide assessment of students’ performance in these areas. The data provided by these tests inform schools about how their students are achieving and guides their pedagogical programs.

NAPLAN is not a test which is a pass or fail. It provides a band scale and a point of comparison which highlights a student’s position. When the NAPLAN results are released, an individual report will measure a student’s performance against an assessment scale. This scale is broken into ten Bands and caters for all year levels from Year 3 to 9; however, not all scales are shown for each of the years tested. For example, at Year 9 only Bands 5 to 10 are shown. At each of the year levels tested, a national minimum standard is set and for Year 9 this is Band 6. Each higher band represents increasing difficulty and requires a more sophisticated demonstration of skills.

WHEN IS NAPLAN? The official test dates for 2017 are Tuesday 9 May to Thursday 11 May with Friday 12 May set aside for catch up tests. All eligible students at Year 9, whether in State, Catholic or Independent School Systems are required to sit the test unless they are exempt or withdrawn by parents/guardians. Exemption is given based on: • English language proficiency e.g. If a student has arrived in the country with a language background other than English less than a year prior to the test or • students have a significant intellectual disability (after consultation between principal, student and relevant parent/carer that despite adjustments they are unable to sit the test). Parents may also choose to withdraw their child from the test for religious beliefs or philosophical reasons. If your child is ill or absent one of the days of testing they can make up the test on one of the following days; however, students are not allowed to sit the test after Friday 12 May 2017. The schedule for Year 9 is as follows: TUESDAY 9 MAY

WEDNESDAY 10 MAY

THURSDAY 11 MAY

1. Language 3. Reading 4. Numeracy Conventions – 65 mins – 60 mins – 45 min Calculator 50 mins Non-calculator 10 min 2. Writing – 40 mins

Your child’s school will send home their NAPLAN report and you can use the individual results to discuss progress with particular teachers. Current Year 9 parents should have previous reports for their children when they sat NAPLAN in Years 3, 5 and 7. Using the final report in conjunction with the other three collected over your child’s schooling will show snap shots over time and can identify trends and indicate value added. It provides very useful information to schools as it can identify students’ strengths and highlight areas where additional support or work may be required. It can assist schools and teachers with their teaching strategies and planning.

HOW DO I HELP MY CHILD PREPARE FOR NAPLAN? At Year 9, students should be well versed at taking tests and working under time constraints. Preparation for NAPLAN has been built into a school’s curriculum over a student’s education. Students should see this as part of the school program and approach it like any assessment where they do the best they can. An early night, a nutritious breakfast and a positive attitude is the best preparation a student can have in their approach to NAPLAN. For further information please refer to the following websites: NAPLAN website www.nap.edu.au, ACARA website www.acara.edu.au and the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority website www.qcaa.qld.edu.au. Written by: Richard Hardy, Dean of Academic Administration, Clayfield College, an Independent Co-ed Pre-Prep-Yr 6 & Girls Pre-Prep-Yr 12. Their Open Morning is Thursday 18 May 8:45am - 10:30am. www.clayfield.qld.edu.au

Education We talk to the Queensland Academies Creative Industries Campus about the International Baccalaureate and asked them to explain why it is becoming a popular path of study for Brisbane schools and their students.

IB DIPLOMA: CHALLENGING THE WHOLE LEARNER The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is not a new kid on the block. With almost 50 years of history and steady growth in the number of schools offering the program, the IB Diploma is highly sought by students around the world. It brings with it established credibility in educating the whole person, with a focus on personal and interdependent wellbeing. IB Diploma students aspire to become IB Learners; learners for life who embody the ten IB Learner attributes: Inquirers, Knowledgeable, Thinkers, Communicators, Principled, Open-minded, Caring, Risk-takers, Balanced, and Reflective.

ACADEMIC BREADTH AND DEPTH The IB Diploma is widely recognised by colleges and universities around the world as superior preparation for students to succeed at post-secondary institutions.Students study six subjects from a range of disciplines which means they are not forced to narrow their choices while at school, and regardless of the subject selection, all students explore the connections between the six major subject areas, study each subject through an international perspective, reflect critically on aspects of knowledge, pursue one subject in great detail through independent research, and have the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills through local and community service.

ENCOURAGES CRITICAL THINKING IB students learn to look beyond the facts, analyse sources, link one subject to another, and to question, question, and question! Inquisitiveness and interpretation are among the key cognitive assets of an IB education. Students develop as independent learners, and co-direct their education; they also recognise the importance of cultivating skills like collaboration and creative thinking which are transferrable to the workplace and influence learning as a life-long habit.

INTEGRATED CURRICULUM The IB Diploma stands alone against other curricula for many reasons; one of the main points of difference is Theory of Knowledge (ToK) – another of the elements that forms the core with CAS and the Extended Essay. ToK encourages students to make connections between subjects and gain the skills needed to become critical thinkers and more effective learners, rather than simply repositories of knowledge.

GRADUATES CARE ABOUT MORE THAN JUST RESULTS A core component of the IB Diploma is Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS) which encourages experiential learning. This can take the form of student-led advocacy initiatives that support developing nations, to sharing their creativity, knowledge and skills to support local community groups. CAS gives students a perspective on the world, their place in it, and the drive to consider, plan, act, and reflect – valuable life-skills that distinguish IB alumni in the university admissions process and workplace.

INDEPENDENT LEARNERS WHO FEEL PREPARED Every IB Diploma graduate completes their own immersive research project – called the Extended Essay – which comprises independent research and excellent organisational skills that culminate in a 4000 word essay. Universities recognise and value the Extended Essay’s role in developing cognitive, research, writing and communication skills in students; skills that are vital to confident and successful higher learning.

AN INTERNATIONAL QUALIFICATION The IB Diploma qualification itself is internationally benchmarked which allows graduates to continue their studies anywhere in the world with confidence and ability. However, regardless whether a student decides to study or work abroad, the IB Diploma recognises that the world is increasingly borderless and young people now have greater opportunities

10

Your Local Families Magazine April/May 2017

to engage in the global workplace. To adapt to these challenges the IB Diploma aims to prepare students to balance their local and national identity with an international mindset so graduates feel prepared and enthusiastic about the future. IB students achieve this by learning to see the world from different cultural perspectives through acquiring another language, and engaging in inquiry, action and reflection on locally and globally significant issues across the curriculum.

STRENGTHENS TIME MANAGEMENT AND BALANCE The features of academic rigour and independent learning in the IB Diploma lead the development of vital organisational practices that only become more important as students reach their university and career aspirations. Good study habits create learners who can hit the ground running in higher education and those who are organised and reflective are better able to maintain a healthy balance between work and play.

IT IS NOT ALL ABOUT EXAMINATIONS IB Diploma assessment is summative, largely occurring at intervals across the two year duration of the program. Assessment focuses on what students have learned and their abilities, rather than what they haven’t learned or can’t do. Testing is rigorous, backed by high-level evidence, and is based on performance against set standards. Examinations are externally delivered and assessed and students are not ranked according to the performance of their cohort; the grades a student earns are grades a student keeps.

UNIVERSITIES RECOGNISE IT – AND GIVE CREDIT FOR IT The IB Diploma enjoys a high level of respect and recognition among the world’s higher education institutions. For students, success in the IB often results in advanced standing, course credit, scholarships, and other admissions related benefits at many universities. Locally this includes Queensland universities such as Griffith University, Queensland University of Technology, and The University of Queensland. As emergent global citizens, IB Learners recognise their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet and help to create a better and more peaceful world. L I TT L E E Y E S Should kids in Brisbane be wearing sunglasses year-round? Actually, yes! The UV rating is very high in Brisbane all year round, and you can’t always judge it by the level of glare. If kids are too young to get sunglasses to fit well and stay on, they should at least be wearing a hat.

How do you choose a good pair of sunnies?

Great sunnies are available from the Cancer Council and other reputable retailers, but all sunglasses sold in Australia must have their UV protection category marked. Category 1 doesn’t provide much protection, they’re more like fashion sunglasses, but Categories 2 and 3 are adequate, with Category 4 being the best. Wrap-around sunglasses are good for shielding your eyes from the sides as well as the front, but polarised lenses are not any better at protecting you from UV – they just reduce the glare. The same applies to darker tints – they reduce glare, but don’t necessarily mean a better level of protection from the sun. You just might squint less and avoid wrinkles!

try to read, or they may rub their eyes a lot. Skipping lines or words, and losing their place while reading might indicate a problem with eye tracking or eye muscles. If they have distance vision issues you might notice them squinting when watching TV, or that they can’t copy off the board quickly or need to sit up the front to read the writing on the board. However younger kids are more likely to have near-vision problems. Short-sightedness is more common in older kids, more often it will show up at age 8-10 or older.

What should I ask for when getting an eye test?

At what age should you first get your child’s eyes checked?

Be wary if the appointment is too short. A comprehensive eye test involves not only assessment of your glasses prescription, but also looks at your eye focusing, and screens for several eye conditions ranging from dry eye to macular degeneration and glaucoma.

Kids should have an eye exam before starting Prep. Most issues will be picked up when a child starts to learn to read and write and is struggling – but if you can pick it up before then, you can potentially prevent issues. Also, if your kids do have difficulties, you’ve already ruled out vision as a possible cause. Kids should also have regular check-ups every 2 years.

Check if your optometrist has bulk billing and if they charge for additional testing. Some private practices may bulk bill for certain age groups and concession card holders. QUT also has a student-led Optometry Clinic which provides eye examination at no cost with access to the latest equipment. Optometry students are fully supervised by experienced clinicians. For patients who need specialised or regular testing, or for patients without a Medicare card, this can allow them to get the care they need at minimal or no cost.

QUT Health starts screening kids from the age of six months – some misalignments of the eyes can start that young, or if they have very poor eyesight they can pick it up and correct it at that age.

What would I notice if my child has a vision problem? Kids will often assume that what they’re seeing is normal, so they won’t necessarily say “I can’t see, that’s blurry”. They might hold things close to

5 reasons a farm stay is the perfect experience for your little farmer!

What is a farmstay? A farmstay is a place where families can live, work and enjoy an authentic rural farm experience. Many farmstays, such as Hosanna Farmstay in Northern NSW, offer a wide range of exciting and challenging activities for all ages to promote the ideals of family togetherness, community and a sense of ‘getting back to basics’. At any farmstay worth its weight in chicken feed, you’ll find all the authentic farm activities you’d expect – milking cows, tending to animals and learning about paddock to table processes. You’ll also come across a range of tasks available for multiple age and ability levels like swimming, kayaking and cooking.

Why are farmstays an ideal choice for pre-prep children? Your child will soon be walking the corridors of their primary school and be called upon to learn in a range of new environments. Selecting a farmstay as an educational family holiday destination means that your child will be exposed to a range of early years’ curriculum areas without even knowing it!

Are you aware of the educational and developmental benefits of taking your pre-prep child on a farm stay? Farm stays provide the perfect link between play and learning in a natural environment. Taking advantage of this innovative family experience may just provide your child with the boost they need to start school ahead of the herd!

Your Local Families Magazine April/May 2017

The curriculum areas that farmstays link to are…

1. Children have a strong sense of identity One of the most elemental parts of the early years learning framework is the idea that, through trial and error and experimentation, children will develop confidence in their learning which will promote a real sense of self. A farmstay is perfect to enhance this area. Your child will be asked and trusted to complete a range of tasks in order to care for animals. Children will have the freedom to roam and move in a safe and natural environment that still involves a certain level of ‘risk,’ which also promotes problem-solving skills.

Families Health 2. Children are connected with and contribute to their world We often bemoan the fact that our children seem to be living very indoor lifestyles. A farmstay, therefore, gives them the opportunity to move away from screens and towards nature. At farmstays your little one will get up close and personal with animals, investigate herbs and vegetables from their source, splash in natural waterways and help move cattle down cow tracks. Watch as your child marvels at the impact they can have on the world around them!

3. Children have a strong sense of wellbeing Your child will be running, jumping, climbing, rolling and tumbling their way around a beautiful natural environment. They will be responding to instructions from a variety of farm workers, making a difference and contributing to the preparation of meals. These are all experiences that foster confidence, sense of self, sense of community and a strong sense of identity. Plus, think of how delicious those tired cuddles will be at the end of the day in front of a roaring fire! This is a place where your family will be able to renew their connectivity.

4. Children are confident and involved learners This is the learning outcome where many prep students struggle. Our kids can become very used to having everything done for them. A farmstay is the perfect experience to try and gain back a little of that independence and resilience. We want kids who are willing to try, get involved and to not give up if things don’t work the first time.

5. Children are effective communicators Communication is not just about speech. It’s also about listening, nonverbal cues and about remembering and being able to interact. A practical environment like a farmstay is the perfect place to hone these skills to help your little one get school-ready. After the farmstay is completed you can ask your child to retell their experience, draw it or re-enact their favourite part – the possibilities are endless!

Farmstays – a healthy, innovative and productive link between home and school Holidays don’t always have to be the same old unit at the same old beach with the same old activities. Now is the time to start thinking outside the box – how can you engage your pre-school child in educational, exciting activities that will have a lasting impact? Farmstays are the way forward for the thinking parents’ family holiday. Hosanna is a 100-acre family and dog friendly farmstay just behind the busy coastal strip of Northern NSW, offering accommodation, activities and functions for individuals, families, groups, and schools. How to get your child to eat breakfast and enjoy it!

Breakfast has long been known as ‘the most important meal of the day’. But some of us may ask, why is this the case, and if so, how do we get our children to eat and enjoy their first meal of the day? Breakfast is essentially what the name implies, breaking the overnight fast of food. Breakfast is the meal that supplies our brain and body with much needed nutrients in order to get us functioning properly for the day. As our brains only fuel source is glucose, we require carbohydrate (main source of glucose) in the morning, such as grainy breads and cereals, fruit, milk or yogurt to prevent your brain being ‘foggy’. This is especially important for children. Children who do not eat breakfast are more prone to becoming irritable, tired, easily distracted and restless compared to those children who have breakfast. Breakfast provides your child with a valuable combination of important food groups. Breads and cereals and dairy are the two main food groups usually consumed at breakfast time. Breads and cereals provide important sources of carbohydrates and fibre. Dairy foods provide a valuable source of protein and calcium, of which will help with immunity, muscle growth and bone health. It is easy to appreciate the value of breakfast for our children, but getting them to eat it and enjoy it can be a challenge. There are many things that parents can do to get their child eating more at breakfast, these include;

1. Establishing a routine. This includes getting up at the same time each morning (on week days) and following a routine. For example, get out of bed, eat breakfast, brush teeth and then get changed etc. This will allow breakfast to become a normal part of the child’s daily routine.

2. Parent’s being role models. Although mornings can be a very busy

time of day, parents still need to set a good example by eating breakfast with their child. 3. Let the child be part of the breakfast decision making process. Ask them what they would like to have for breakfast. For example, what fruit would they like on their cereal or what flavour yoghurt would they like?

4. Try something different. If your child is getting bored of the same breakfast each day, include something different,

16

Your Local Families Magazine April/May 2017

such as introducing food from a different culture or having a breakfast theme day (i.e. bush tucker breakfast).

5. Keep variety!! This is probably the most important one to remember. Keeping variety will keep your child interested in eating, and it will also ensure that a variety of foods are being offered to the child which can help in developing taste preferences and ensuring all the food group requirements are being met. Examples of breakfast ideas for children include: • Toasted ricotta and berry wraps drizzled with honey • A boiled egg with ‘soldiers’ (a piece of grainy toast cut into strips) • Fruit smoothie made with yoghurt • Baked beans on an English muffin • Pancakes with fruit and yoghurt – you can even make the fruit form the ‘face’ of the pancake by letting your child decorate it • Crumpets with jam • Cereal with added fruit, nuts and yoghurt • Grilled cheese and tomato on toast fingers • Savoury omelette (again letting your child decide on what fillings they would like) • Homemade hash browns • Peanut butter, banana and honey on grainy bread • Warm apple and cinnamon muffins (put mixture together the night before and refrigerate then bake fresh in the morning) For more information see the Healthy at Home section and recipes on the www.naqld.org website.

5 REASONS TO

Let Your Kids Run Away with The Circus Circus is a welcoming place for everyone including the young and the young at heart. For children, circus provides the perfect activity to keep them fit and healthy. Classes not only teach an amazing range of physical skills, but they also instill important values that your kids will benefit from throughout their lives. Read on for 5 reasons why your kids can – and should – run away with the circus! Circus classes are the perfect mixture of physical activity and mental creativity Juggling, tackling the trapeze and mastering the magic of the tightwire are activities that teach excellent hand eye coordination, balance and gross motor skills. Plus, showing off these new skills in a performance provides a fantastic creative outlet that inspires kids’ imagination and self-expression. This ensures physical, mental and creative development.

All classes are skills-based and progressive Children can join the circus from as young as 18 months. Every class provides just the right amount of activity, skill (and fun) for each age group and children learn skills that they can build on each term. Not only does this teach the value of consistent hard work and patience, but it also provides a huge confidence boost as children master their new-found skills.

Your kids get to join an inclusive community and make new friends By joining a circus school, families become part of a special community of like-minded people. Children get to make new, often lifelong friends, and learn the value of trust and team work. Parents often become

part of the circus community by being involved in school shows, performances, fetes, and other circus-inspired activities.

Classes take place in a supportive, non-competitive environment Unlike many traditional sports, circus classes are suited to all skill levels and personalities. Each child is valued for their individual input and classes are noncompetitive, allowing children to develop in their own time and at their own pace. Each child is supported by a talented team of professional trainers who make the safety of kids their highest priority and encourage children step up and have a go.

Your child will learn the values of trust, team work, taking risks, and dreaming big Circus classes teach valuable traits that will prepare your child for life. Working together, trusting your team mates, learning how to dream big and to laugh out loud are just some of the values that are instilled in youngsters. Flipside Circus runs a variety of classes for kids aged 18 months to 18 years, at their Training Facility in Alderley. Contact them on 07 3352 7233 or via their website www.flipsidecircus.org.au
