2022-2023 Family Engagement Training & Professional Development When schools engage parents/guardians as authentic partners, students do significantly better in school. Families In Schools (FIS) offers schools and community organizations programs to give staff, parents, and students new learning opportunities that increase knowledge and skills to support student success.
Family Engagement Institutes Based on more than 20 years of experience working with families, Families In Schools has developed an array of tools and trainings that help educational institutions, and community based organizations, better work with and partner with families. Our Family Engagement Institutes focus on helping school, district and organizational staff learn about research-based strategies and best practices for creating an environment for effective and authentic family engagement. Family Engagement Strategies Institute This module focuses on helping participants learn about research-based strategies and best practices that engage parents and guardians in authentic and meaningful ways to support student achievement, increase effective communication between staff and families, and bridge a college and career-ready culture between school and home.
Welcoming Environment Institute This module provides participants with foundational knowledge and understanding of family engagement research and best practices, an overview of the four domains of a welcoming environment and their relationship to encouraging and supporting parental involvement, and an opportunity to assess and enhance their school’s strategies for creating a welcoming environment. Outreach, Recruitment & Retention Institute This module provides participants with an opportunity to learn best practices for encouraging and increasing parent participation at events, meetings, and trainings. The module explores the importance of building a team, planning and implementation strategies, developing communication tools, tracking results, and debriefing/reflecting.
Curricular Programs The goals of the FIS curricular programs are to provide parents with the knowledge, skills, tools, and confidence to enhance their involvement in their child’s education. Your staff will receive 2-day training to successfully engage parents and guardians and implement a Families In Schools' curricular program at your site. Your staff will have the opportunity to become familiar with FIS curricular programs, methodology and facilitation practices. At the end of the training staff will be certified family workshop facilitators.
5th Grade - 8th Grade Transition to Middle School is a four-week program that enables parents to gain confidence in guiding and monitoring their child’s educational and social development during the important transitional stage between elementary and middle school, so the child is prepared for and ultimately successful in college. The programs provide interactive lessons about the importance of education, adolescent social development, academic success strategies, and college preparation.
