NI EDUCATION AWARDS 2020 HELLO, BONJOUR, HOLA, GUTEN TAG, AND WELCOME TO THIS YEAR'S AWARDS

The Famlilies First Awards have been running now for over a decade. Over the years we have highlighted and showcased some of the best people, businesses, charities, schools, and facilitators from all over the island of Ireland. We have felt humbled along the way when hearing some of the stories we receive about our nominees - ultimately proving once again that there is actually good in the world.

Many of you will have been on this journey with us, having attended previous Families First ceremonies. You’ll have watched as we, like you, through the years have honed and perfected our craft with our evenings becoming better and better. As we’ve been reading the literally thousands of comments we’ve received about our finalists tonight, we’ve noticed this theme coming through about the educators in the room tonight. Stories about watching the children in your care grow not just academically, but in strength and confidence as your teaching and nurturing builds them up and encourages them to try new experiences, learn new skills, and hone the skills they already possess.

As a family run business ourselves, we all have children who have been through the education system or are still part of it. We have watched as some who have excelled in one environment don’t once the environment is changed for them. We have watched the massive difference just one educational professional can make when things aren’t going right - one person taking the time can completely turn things around in a child’s life. This room is filled with people like that.

You are the people who can, and do make a difference in the lives of our children, your actions can soothe and motivate.

So tonight, remember that all of our finalists here are worthy of note. You have been nominated by your pupils, your peers, and the parents of the children in your care. You will have received your finalists comments which are sure to have made you feel proud. Stay proud, you’re doing wonderful things.

CARNINY PRIMARY SCHOOL FINALIST

Carniny Primary School is situated on a picturesque site on the outskirts of Ballymena and have 291 pupils on roll aged 4-11. We are immensely proud of our reputation for high academic standards, pastoral care, extra curricular provision and our warm and friendly atmosphere.

We have high expectations of our children, parents and staff and benefit from the positive relationships with our parents. The work of the school has been testified by the many awards received.

SILVERSTREAM PRIMARY SCHOOL FINALIST

Silverstream Primary School and Nursery Unit is located in Greenisland which provides education to 156 wonderful pupils.

The school is supported by an extremely proactive Parent Staff Association and Board of Governors. We offer a range of after school clubs to enhance the social and skill area of our children.

We take great pride in our school and the staff work together to ensure the best educational experiences are provided.

RATHCOOLE PRIMARY SCHOOL FINALIST

Rathcoole PS and NU is a controlled primary school in the estate of Rathcoole with 155 children in our care. We are a Nurturing school who “Inspire, Nurture and Flourish” and encourage all of our young people to be the best that they can be.

Our school, with an increasing enrolment, is developing a firm foundation in the community, making a difference to their education and future prospects. The hard work of all staff and pupils has been acknowledged in recent awards. Relationships are key to all that we do in our local community primary school.

Kilmoyle Primary School and Nursery is a rural school with dedicated and committed staff and a welcoming and secure environment where learning is fun. Small classes ensure children are nurtured, supported and encouraged. Relationships between staff and pupils are characterised by mutual respect and honesty. Our compassionate pupils support charities including the homeless, schools in Africa and the Australian bushfires.

GARRYDUFF PRIMARY SCHOOL FINALIST

Garryduff Primary School is a small rural, country Primary School outside Ballymoney with children attending from the surrounding area. For the last 9 years the school had been over-subscribed for admissions. We pride ourselves in holding the child at the centre of all we do – their needs always come first.

At Eden Primary School we aim to create a calm and caring environment where everyone and specifically each child will be encouraged to fulfil their intellectual, spiritual, physical, social, aesthetic and emotional potential.

Carnmoney Primary is a school of 401 pupils located in the heart of Carnmoney village. Initially, a country school dating back to 1798, it opened on the present site in February 1964. The school remains an integral part of what is now a much larger, vibrant and close knit community.

BUSHVALLEY PRIMARY SCHOOL FINALIST

Bushvalley Primary School is a warm, welcoming and friendly school at the heart of the local community. MERCY PRIMARY SCHOOL - FINALIST I have been a Principal at Mercy Primary for 6 years. As a young girl I dreamed about being a teacher but never would I have imagined that I would be back in my own Primary School as Principal. I love working at Mercy Primary school with a fantastic staff, wonderful students and caring families.

LINN PRIMARY SCHOOL - FINALIST

I’m Andrea and I’ve been Principal of Linn Primary School for almost 12 years. I love my job and that is primarily down to the people I work with everyday, the children, their parentys and our staff. Linn Primary is somewhere I feel I belong. I’m married to Brian, who has also been nominated tonight (which could be interesting) and we have two children, Molly is 15 and Jack is 12.

GLENGORMLEY HIGH SCHOOL - FINALIST Having worked as a retail manager for 10 years, I trained as a teacher and have enjoyed 15 amazing years working with young people and their families. My role as Principal is to ensure that my staff feel safe, motivated, enthusiastic and engaged in their job. Their role is to ensure that the pupils feel safe, motivated, enthusiastic and engaged in their learning. I absolutely love my job.

SILVERSTREAM PRIMARY SCHOOL - FINALIST I have been teaching since 2006 with a majority of my time in special education. I moved to Silverstream Primary School last year, meeting the most wonderful pupils and families. I have enjoyed seeing the school and pupils develop over the past year and have had the most amazing support from the local community.

HARRYVILLE PRIMARY SCHOOL - FINALIST Mrs Meikle is always thinking about and planning ways of improving learning and everyday life for all that come through the door of Harryville Primary School. She makes everyone feel and know that they are loved and special. After 40 years in teaching she still passionate about making a difference in all our lives.

Emma has been teaching for twenty years and loves her job, no two days are the same and teaching Primary 1 always makes her happy.

EDEN PRIMARY SCHOOL - FINALIST Nicole has been teaching for four years and loves teaching Primary 1. She is the School Council leader within school and also assists in leading ICT . Miss Allen is also the school hairdresser whilst away on trips or if anyone needs a plait! In her spare time, Nicole loves to shop and spend time with family and friends.

ABBEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE - FINALIST After my previous life as a Bank Manager I changed my role to become a Behavioural Support Assistant and that has been one of the most rewarding decisions I have made.

In schools there are children who have challenging home lives, personal problems or confidence issues. As a BSA you are uniquely placed to make a real difference in the lives of those children. You are able to invest additional time and input to help them grow in confidence, feel valued within a safe environment.

My role in school is to ensure the safety, well-being and enjoyment of all who enter, the hygiene and cleanliness inside, the maintenance and upkeep of fixtures and fittings both inside and out. While every day is different and there will be high and low points in all jobs I can honestly say I love coming to work!!! I’ve never bragged that about any previous job. From Andrea, each and every member of staff and especially the children, I honestly adore them all!

Tullygally is an amazing Primary School where all children irrelevant of their needs and backgrounds come together to share a nurturing learning environment. The staff go above and beyond to ensure all children’s needs are being met, the pupil voice is being heard and they all reach their full potential.

We have 13 classes incorporating 368 pupils. The school enrolment has risen over the last five years from 305 to 374 at our highest. We have a very strong community ethos and great strengths in many creative areas from drama productions to successful choirs and sporting teams.

The relationships within the school are excellent and parents are very supportive and appreciative of what we are trying to achieve.

Through such things as School Council and Eco-Schools, Susan has encouraged the children to shape their learning environment and has taught them how to illicit change through positive engagement.

Melinda has been involved with Maghaberry Primary for many years, as a parent, a volunteer and a classroom assistant. Melinda is known for being extremely warm, gentle and caring. Her loving approach is exactly what our young and vulnerable children need and we are all so very proud of her.

TANDRAGEE PRIMARY SCHOOL - FINALIST Mrs Minish has been a long serving and wonderful member of the Tandragee School community. Carol has been a supportive parent, member of the PTA and is now in her current role as Head of Kitchen. Carol has a keen interest in the welfare of pupils and will always go the extra distance to ensure a child is well looked after.

Her conscientious and helpful nature are always to the fore and we couldn’t do without her.
