We wanted to create a modern indie pop sound with throwback elements to queer synthpop bands of the early aughts (e.g., Uh Huh Her). I actually wrote the song on the bass, and Steph sampled the bass line from my demo in the final song, which you can hear as the lead-in instrumental. She built some really cool, bright synth sounds around it and we added in some ghostlike operatic background vocals for an eerie, almost deranged feel to the song.”

Hello Silvia Ryder, how's your day? What's on your mind at the moment?

Currently down with Covid and a vacant brain.

Congratulations on the release of your debut album, My Violence. Can you tell us more about the creative process behind the album and what inspired you to explore these distinctive soundscapes?

My previous project Sugarplum Fairies was very guitar-centric and I wanted to move away from that.

Also, I started to explore composing (I have strictly been a lyricist until now) and I wanted to differentiate the My Violence sound from the Sugarplum Fairies.

The LP's sound has been described as both dreamy and dark. Can you explain how you balance these two elements in your music, and what emotions or experiences you aim to convey to your listeners?

Dreamy and Dark are a perfect summation of this album. The emotions I want to convey are kind of like a soundtrack to a 1960’s French New Wave movie by Godard or Truffaut

Jesus is the way you see The Velvet Underground's classic track. What inspired you to cover this song, and how did you put your own unique spin on it?

I was always intrigued by the austerity of this song. Lou Reed’s ‘Jesus’ only has 2 repeating lyric lines and minimalistic arrangements. I wanted to try a different approach by adding a wall of psychedelic layers.

Can you shed some light on the music video for Jesus?

What was the creative process that led to the amazing visuals?

If you had to describe your sound in three words what would they be?

Sensual, melancholic, cathartic.

What do you want people to take away from listening to your music?

My lyrics are intentionally vague and abstract and open to personal interpretation, kind of like aforementioned examples of French New Wave movies. Those usually do not have concise endings.

The video to Jesus is a looped excerpt from Marc Kehoe’s 1976 VHS short, titled “Sick Sick Sister”, about two gorgeous but politically opposed sisters’ fight to death.

You collaborated with Danny Lee Blackwell of Night Beats on Jesus. How did this collaboration come about, and what was it like working together on this track?

I was introduced to Danny Lee via Gold Star, who produced, mixed and co-wrote my album. Danny Lee seemed perfect for this song since he incorporates a variety of kaleidoscopic layers in his recordings. Due to time constraints he overdubbed his vocal tracks in his home studio.

What can fans expect from Silvia Ryder in the future?

Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations on the horizon that you can tease for us?

Going to lay low for a little bit and start working on new songs. I have some ideas for interesting collaborations but nothing is confirmed yet.

I think that comparison mostly stems from both of us having German accents. However, if it weren’t for Nico, I might have never had the courage to start singing in the first place. His seamless fusion of grunge rock and melodic vocals, accompanied by powerful riffs and thunderous drums, creates an unforgettable musical experience.

LUCKY THIEF hasn't merely composed an album that defies categorization, beckoning listeners to explore the maze of his emotions. Instead, he extends an invitation to surrender to the magnetic force of his musical cosmos, where the rebellious spirit of sound discovers its voice.

Can you tell us more about the inspiration behind your debut album 'DIY'?

Wow, there's loads. I've suffered from depression since my early 20s and writing music helps so much with that, I don't have a choice but to do it. All the songs I write have a flavour of that but there's loads of past incidents involving alcohol abuse, drug abuse, failed past relationships which all give me inspiration to write.

As well as that I wanted to push myself, prove to myself and to others that I could set out and make something which I was proud of.

Being a multi-talented artist, you wrote and recorded everything on DIY. What challenges and rewards did you face in taking on such a hands-on approach to your music?

There are a lot of challenges really. In terms of writing and demoing songs, I don't have a studio for myself so I regularly have to take trips there and back just to alter sometimes small parts of the songs. In terms of recording, the days are long and I have to do multiple takes on every instrument as well as ending with vocals.

I think actually the main thing is remembering all the parts to the songs, I don't write them down as I can't read music so they're in my head. I have to regularly check my demos to make sure I've included all the parts!

The album explores personal themes such as mental health struggles, relationships, substance abuse, and the impact of your religious upbringing. How did these experiences influence the sound and lyrical content of the album?

I always like the juxtaposition between a beefy riff and a beautiful melody and I try to combine the two quite a lot. Although a lot of my experiences have been negative they've always resulted in something better. I feel like the riffs and guitars can be the pain, grit or dirt which I experienced but the lyrics or vocal lines can be more hopeful and can provide a different feel to the other parts.

The album was recorded at Humm Studios with Dom Mitchison, mixed by Ky Witney, and mastered by Pete Maher.

How did collaboration with these professionals contribute to the overall sound and production of 'DIY'?

Dom's a great producer to work with, really chilled and happy to explore different avenues. I didn't think I'd ever use about 9 pedals plugged into each other at the same time for a guitar effect but we did. I lived with Ky when he was mixing the album so we regularly had mixing sessions in his studio in Stokescroft. We definitely drank too many beers which delayed the process somewhat but I was able to have a really hands on approach and he came up with some brilliant ideas in terms of mixing and even arrangement. It was amazing to see how much he loved hearing the songs live the other day when we played the album release show at the Louisiana.

With three intense years dedicated to crafting 'DIY,' what was the most challenging and rewarding part of the album-making process for you personally?

I think the most challenging was keeping up the self-belief and work ethic, even in Covid times. It was also really hard trying to balance making the album with my studies, job, relationship and everything else that is and was still going on. And financially! Making and performing music requires a lot of money for barely any reward so that is and was also challenging!

I think setting out a goal and achieving it has been the most rewarding part, and then even more rewarding is seeing the great reaction that it's had from people that have heard it. I think also the Louisiana album launch party was a special moment for me, being able to play the whole album with my live band to a near sellout crowd.

What are your hopes and expectations for how audiences will connect with your music?

I just hope they have a good time! Seriously seeing us live, I want them to enjoy the shows and feed off the energy and passion. In terms of connecting to the album on record, I hope they can hear what I'm trying to say and connect to that. I also hope they do some great bench presses when listening to Menace.

How would you describe your perfect day?

Let's start really middle class with a fuck off brunch coffee, eggs, smoked salmon, hot sauce - yeah even a smashed avacado in there.

Then I'd meet all my mates with my partner and go watch Liverpool play at Anfield for a 12.30pm kick off. We smash Manchester United again and then head off for some food and beers after.

Queens of the Stone Age are playing in the evening so we have some more beers to get in the mood, watch them and go back to a mates house and party the night away with no hangover the next day.

FM iNTERVIEW What would your fans say they appreciate the most about you?

You'd have to ask them really, but I'd like them to appreciate my dedication to my craft. I'd hope they can see the authenticity of me as a person (flaws and all) which comes through in my music and that I'll never give up.

What is your most valued material possession?

I don't know whether I'd call this a material possession as it feels more important to me than that, but it would have to be my guitar. It's only a couple of hundred quid but it has massive sentimental value to me as I wrote the whole DIY on it. Or perhaps my pedals as they're way more expensive and would be a lot harder for me to replace!

If you could blink your eyes and be in a favourite place right now, where would that place be?

I'm not sure I've found my favourite place yet but I'm looking forward to finding it.

We were all invited to a writing camp put on my Shogun Audio who I am signed to as an artist. I went to the first one they did two years ago, this one was a little different.

It was in Bristol, in this really nice love island type villa location. It was incredible. The idea of it is to have a bunch of producers, a bunch of songwriters in two different rooms and every three hours you rotate.

I’ve worked with Pola & Bryson before but this was the first time I worked with Goddard and Lens. Goddard was coming off the back of his big track with Venbee ‘Messy In Heaven.’ I was a little nervous but I knew I had to make the most of this opportunity.

When you work with producers you haven't worked with before, sometimes you do speak to them and get to know them as people but the majority of time they've got to make the beat so they have to focus. They cracked on with the beat, once I had enough to write from I got stuck in. In terms of clicking musically, it was fairly instant. It was one of those sessions where I could really dig in and tap into what my superpower was on that day.

Am I right when stating that collaborating as a drum & bass artist is one of the biggest parts of functioning within the scene?

Being a vocalist within drum and bass compared to being a host or a recording artist is still a fairly new concept when being on the same level at the DJ and producer. As it is within a lot of other genres with dance music. Producers definitely have to be on it every single day because it's a really techy genre and it’s such a tricky genre to be good at because it's so intricate. That doesn't mean that the songwriters don't need to be on the same level when writing every day but in terms of the way it is in the scene at the moment, we kinda dip in and dip out. We’re becoming a lot more recognised.

The one thing with Bristol that is really good is that there are a lot of just normal people, not just hanging because they wanna get something from one another but because they mess with people The Lyrics in ‘Way Up’ are very powerful and something I would like to focus on. As you know, it’s not often an artist can really explain in depth a lot of the decisions they’ve made when they write. What does this track mean to you?

This track means a lot because I was able to write about how I feel in a very empowering way but deliver it in a fairly commercial way in relation to the melody and the way I word things. To write something that would be easy to catch on to and be catchy to anyone else who doesn't want to delve deep into it. I've been saying this phrase a lot, I'm living in my power a lot more now.

Realising what it's taken to get to this point and how I'm able to deliver. When I'm having a good day, realising how good I am and I'm celebrating that. I’m celebrating the journey and the song is about that journey and how this is what happened when I just opened my eyes.

Do you have any tracks that inspire your songwriting or any musicians that inspire the sound you are creating?

Swim Good by Frank Ocean. A lot of Frank Ocean songs are really cleverly crafted. Yearly I change what I think he means by the lyrics. When Frank Ocean came around it was at a time where R&B was dance music. It was very simple and very throwaway. He came about and he introduced that you could be reality intricate and really clever in R&B writing and that was something that I really looked up to. Swim Good was the first song that resonated with me. This song is the basis of all of my songwriting. How does he nail the melody while also matching the lyrics so that it completely flows and sounds very beautiful? That's the genius of his writing.

You talk about being rooted in R&B foundations.

‘Way Up’ fits within the drum & bass genre but there is a soulfulness in your performance. Is this a direction you’ve been carving out for yourself?

It’s not something that I went into to carve out a lane doing what I do. I’ve grown up on R&B and dance music and for the past 15 years I've been trying to fuse the sound. It's never been as seamless and easy to do as it has been to do within liquid drum and bass. I’m going to be unapologetically myself, R&B, all the harmonies, all the oohs, all the BV. I’m just going to go for it.

How do you find the music community in Bristol for your genre?

When I was growing up here there were little pockets, it's a fairly small city and there were little pockets of different kinds of music whether it be R&B, hip hop, jazz, garage or drum and bass. All of those different pockets have a very tight community but at the same time, all of those people collaborate with each other or they are friends. You've got people that live in the same house that make jazz music and drum and bass and they'll both collaborate together or hang together. The one thing with Bristol that is really good is that there are a lot of just normal people, not just hanging because they wanna get something from one another but because they mess with people.

One thing that I would like about the industry that I'm in is the attitude towards songwriters. If a producer makes a track, that producer can get paid for that track especially in the mainstream.

You were signed to PMR Records and now you are signed to Shogun Audio. Do you think this shift in direction is connected to you flourishing in a new scene?

There was a lot of time between the two. At least 9 years between the two. I learnt a lot in between, the first one was about connecting what I thought was two loves which was R&B and dance music and then it ended up being just pop and dance music and when that situation didn't really work out I came back to my roots in Bristol where the whole landscape had changed. The kind of dance music I was doing before was evolving, that rose up and then underground dance music changed so I had to figure out what I wanted to do that would be timeless. I mean timeless for myself, that works in whatever room I'm stepping in, this is what I do and I'm not changing it because this is what's cool over there. It took a while.

And something you love about working within drum & bass?

I love how if you have a good idea or you want to try something different, you can find a pocket of the genre to go on that adventure with you. Space to create which is great. The whole industry as a whole is the people that you meet. I’ve met a lot of good people. I've had great opportunities such as going to LA, Sweden, Germany just through writing.

What is something that you would like to change about the industry?

One thing that I would like about the industry that I'm in is the attitude towards songwriters. If a producer makes a track, that producer can get paid for that track especially in the mainstream. They can alway make money from djing if it's dance music and from the writing side of it, there are multiple revenue streams as well as getting an advance. As a songwriter, a lot of the time you don't get paid. You only get paid when the royalties come through, if the track is accepted and you get the cut. It can take a really long time, all the traveling, food comes out of your pocket and if you're doing that regularly it's a lot to expect from a songwriter or for someone who is offering a lot to the final product.
