August and featured the R&B legend, Ginuwine, for a remake of the 1996 top hit ‘Pony’ with renewed vocals.

Tough Love were described by Radio One’s DJ Annie Mac, who also recently played at The Stannery, as “ one of the production teams [Radio 1 are] most excited for in 2015”. The duo has been throwing waves globally in the house scene with their catchy, base heavy music.

The Falmouth Anchor had a

chat with the guys to talk about everything from their excitement to play in Falmouth, to their ambitions for the year ahead. We first asked them why they decided to come and play in Falmouth, they replied that it was somewhere that they’d never played before. “We always enjoy playing university tours and we were really looking forward to playing Falmouth.” They continued, “We recently played Colorfest in Newquay, which was really great fun so hopefully the Falmouth gang are just as crazy.”

When asked what they were most excited for about the trip down to Cornwall, they proceeded to speak very highly of university crowds, “they’re always up for a good time and some of our craziest memories are from our own uni experiences.” The two continued to explain “we’ll be travelling down the morning after our first ‘Get Twisted” tour date in Bournemouth, so we’ll be in good spirits and excited to get on the decks to test out some new music- especially our new single, ‘Saviour’. ” “Freshers’ is always mayhem”, they said, explaining the unique vibe that Freshers’ events have and why they like to play at these kind of events . “Everyone is on a high,” they continued, “for some it’s their first real taste of freedom away from the family. People just want to have fun.” They concluded by saying that “There’s plenty of drinks to go around, and Freshers’ events have got all the ingredients for a great party.”

Our penultimate question for the duo concens their ambitions for the year ahead. The two appear humble, “if the year turns out to be as successful as 2015 has been, we’d be more than happy”. “We’re high ambitious,” they continued, “so anything is possible. Next year we’ll be releasing our debut album, while continuing to tour and grow both Tough Love and our label, Get Twisted”.

The two seem like they have a busy 2016 planned, and we wish them the best, and look forward to hearing their new work.

We ended the interview by asking them about their own experiences in their student days.

Both of the guys went to Brunel, although they apparently never crossed paths. “We both had quite different experiences. Stef was really busy balancing DJing and playing football with university work, while Alex was a fully fledged rugby player.” They concluded by laughing about the fact that “some of the best experiences definitely involved university nights out, but some of those experiences should never be shared!”

Having talked to the guys, we’re really pumped to hear them play at the end of the Freshers’ run of events. Make sure you get your tickets for the night – this one shouldn’t be missed.

Koofi pizza prices rise over the summer months stirring complaints from students

he end of the summer term meant the inevitable return home for many students. However for those staying down in Cornwall for the holiday, surprise was in store when Koofi raised the prices of their pizza over the summer months.

Koofi, the on campus café located near to Glasney Village,

is hugely popular with students thanks to its ever-flowing supply of Starbucks coffee and convenient takeaway food.

So, it was to the disgruntlement of many students, many of those being postgraduates who are based on campus over the summer, when Koofi made the decision to raise the prices of their pizzas to coincide with the start of renting out the Glasney halls

as “Summer Penryn Apartments”.

Students found that pizzas which were £6.50 prior to the summer holidays were now priced at £9.50, while Margarita pizzas had gone up from £4.50 to £6.50.

The price of food and drink at both the Penryn and Falmouth Campuses is decided by FXPlus, the service provider of both the University of Exeter Cornwall Campus and Falmouth University. FXPlus manages all the shared services for both universities and is committed to providing students with the best university experience.

Amanda Chetwynd-Cowieson, the new FXU President of Student Experience said, “Postgraduate students came to me with queries over the rise in the price of Koofi pizzas over the summer period.” She continued to say that she has taken this issue up with the relevant parties within FXPlus. It has been agreed between FXU and FXPlus that charging students more who had remained

in Cornwall out of the undergraduate term dates wasn’t fair, and furthermore that the issue wasn’t handled correctly.

It has been agreed that in the future, relevant liaising will take place between FXPlus and FXU over issues of this nature. It is FXU’s view that prices of food and drink should not increase simply due to the fact that the majority of the student body is not present on campus.

Amanda concludes that, “This is the type of issue everyone at FXU is keen to help students with, working with students to see how we can improve the post graduate experience is going to be one of our top priorities for the next year.”

Koofi pizzas are to remain at the increased prices until the beginning of the undergraduate academic term this September at which point they shall return to their normal prices.

University students celebrate at the Annual FXU Awards Ceremony

ast term ended on a high as the Princess Pavilion played host the FXU’s annual Awards Ceremony on May 22nd 2015.

The awards ceremony is held annually to recognise achievements from a broad range of FXU activities, from volunteering and fundraising to academic representation and sporting achievements. The evening was hosted

by Ellie Scouller (FXU President Falmouth), Rhun Davies, (FXU President Exeter), Roger Auster (FXU President Student Experience) and Catherine Thornhill, (FXU President Community & Welfare).

The event gave both Exeter and Falmouth students an opportunity to socialise with institutional leaders, representatives from local charities, civic dignitaries and VIPs including the Mayor of Falmouth; Councillor John Body, The Mayor of Penryn; Councillor Mark Snowdon and Invictus Games gold medallist Chris Attis.

Chris Attis commented, “It is inspiring to see how important the FXU Awards are to recognise people outside of their academic achievements regarding volun-

teering, community, societies and sport. It was an honour to be at the awards evening and also an honour to be giving out the sport awards”.

Along with students, staff were also recognised for their contribution to the student experience and outstanding teaching. The awards presented to both staff and students were created by Lucy Plant, a third year Sustainable Product Design student at Falmouth. Each award was hand stitched and entirely unique with the aim of representing the award winner’s individuality. The 3D coiled vessels carried connotations of a maritime theme whilst also combining elements to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of FXU. This year, a special award was given in this year’s ceremony in memory of the late Andy Hocking, a Devon and Cornwall Police Officer, who sadly passed away earlier this year. ‘The FXU Andy Hocking Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Community’ was presented to Hattie Frisby.

Special mention is given to the winner of ‘The Daniel Palmer Award for The Most Outstanding Contribution to Student Ex-

perience’, Oussama Kardi, for his work in the Islamic Society, especially in their ‘Believe and Do Good Month’, which was an FXU Islamic Society project.

The society was successful in raising over £500 for the appeal by carrying out a number of fundraisers, beach cleaning events, as well as donating food to Penryn food bank and encouraging 100 students to sign up to give blood. The Islamic Society’s success was widely noticed, resulting in the society’s nomination for the National Islamic Society Awards.

The evening additionally showcased a wide variety of student talent, featuring performances from The Chorus, a student run member lead choir, and Viva Voce, Penryn Campus’ resident chamber choir. Further performances were provided by the FXU Orchestra Quartet and the musical theatre society, the Tremough Follies.

POLITICS How the government is selling the family silver, and why you should care.

The issue of privatisation is a very heated debate in politics, but what is “privatisation”, and why does it matter?

I

n beginning to deconstruct this idea of “privatisation”, we must first look to the ownership of large companies, which is usually split into shares. Whoever has the majority of shares, gets to call the shots and often a small group of investors will own the majority stake between them. Sometimes it will be one (typically rich) person, and other times, it’s the government. If the government buys the majority stake in a company it is said to have been “nationalised”, meaning that the government’s shares in the company are said to be an “asset”, which belongs to the nation. If the company does well, and makes a profit then the share price will rise. When the share price rises then the government, and thus the taxpayers, whose money they are spending, will gain money. If however the company does badly, then the share price will drop, and this means that the investors lose money. So there it is, state ownership in a nutshell.

Some people believe that the government should not get involved in business trades like this, and that rather than seeking to earn money from partial or full ownership of companies, that they should simply allow private investors to run the companies, and tax their profits. This creates less risk to the taxpayer because if a company does badly, the taxpayers cannot lose money. When the company does well however, they still reap the rewards through taxation.

Although this would generally bring less money in for the government, supporters of this argument often state that parlia-

ment spends too much providing services that should be in private ownership. An example of this would be that Britain has the NHS whereas the USA has healthcare provided by private companies. On the other hand, there are those who say that the government should own all businesses, and that all the profits of all businesses should be spent by the government to pay for more public services, like schools, roads and hospitals as they do currently, but also much more, such as investing in energy companies, to keep prices down or providing free internet (as some countries already do, Estonia for example), or in companies of all descriptions, to provide employment.

I will save arguing the benefits of state ownership for another article. What I want to talk about, is why you should care that the current government are selling our stake in some companies. For the most part, governments pursue a policy of nationalisation in times of crisis, for example many industries were nationalised after WWII, and many banks were bailed out (nationalised) after the 2008 crash and the credit crunch. The government steps in, and uses our money, to stop companies from collapsing and causing high unemployment leading to a downward economic spiral.

Later when the crisis has past, they sell off the assets and allow markets to re-gain control.

However here is my problem, if you sell something, that you’ve bought very cheap because it was damaged, and then spent money repairing it, when you sell it, you should sell it for a higher price to make sure you get that money back.

The government, however, has been selling off our stake in companies much cheaper than they should be. Shares in Royal

mail were sold at about 40% less than they were worth, resulting in a loss of over £1 billion, but while taxpayers were losing out a man named Peter Davies was cleaning up. Peter Davies is on the management committee for a hedge fund called Lansdowne Partners, which bought over £50million worth of shares in Royal mail, and after a single day of trading, those shares had risen in value by approximately £18million. You might be forgiven for thinking “so the taxpayers didn’t get the full value of the shares, but what’s special about Peter Davies? It doesn’t seem like anything is wrong so far.”

But here’s where it gets interesting, Lansdowne Partners should never even have had access to those shares, they bought shares which were only supposed to be for sale to Royal Mail employees, and that many of them didn’t get a chance to buy any, because big hedge funds had already bought them all. It may seem a little unfair, but again it doesn’t sound like anything wrong has happened. “But what has this got to do with Peter Davies?!” I hear you cry. Well, Peter Davies is one of George Osborne’s closest friends, so close in fact that he was actually the best man at George’s wedding. Suddenly it doesn’t seem likely Peter Davies just got lucky and guessed that the shares would rocket in value, and invested £50 million on a hunch.

Now for the important bit, why you should care. When the government loses this kind of money, it means that it has to come from somewhere else.

Either through higher taxes, or from cuts to public spending. So at a time where we are being held to ransom for our education as a result of the cuts to the Higher Education budget, and being told that “tough decisions are going

to have to be made” about cuts to disability living allowance, cuts to adult social care, cuts to child benefit, cuts to housing benefit, cuts to mental health provision (particularly for young people), and cuts to the NHS, it is a disgrace that the government is giving away this kind of revenue.

I say ‘giving away’ rather than ‘losing’ because this is not a gamble that hasn’t paid off, it is the result of a carefully formulated plan intended to make money for those in power, and their friends - it’s called ‘insider trading’, and it’s illegal. It is for this reason that regardless of which party you support, you should consider this an insult not only to the principle that the country should be run in the interests of its citizens, but also to the idea that “we are all in this together”.

These assets, correctly managed could provide billions of pounds of income, which could be used to lower taxes, and still provide the improvements to public services this country so desperately needs. It is within our power to hold these politicians to account, and it is our duty to do so. The time has come to cut the ties between money and government and for the public to demand that governance in the UK serves the people, not the banks or businesses. If you’re unsure of what you can do to stop this, I’d give you this advice, do anything you can. Tell people, on social media, in the pub, in the gym, anyone who will listen.

Get involved in protests, get your friends involved, and get organised. Just do something, because the power of the people is greater than that of the people in power.

Remember the words of the late Bob Crow, “If you spit alone, you can’t do anything, but if we all spit together, we can drown the bastards.”

The Iranian Nuclear Deal ATENA TABEAHMADI

O

n the 14th of July 2015, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action was agreed upon and signed by Iran, the P5+1(United States, United Kingdom, China, France, Russia plus Germany) and the European Union. This agreement is a key moment in the history of relations between Iran and the West as it finally ends the negotiations regarding Iran’s nuclear plans, which date back to 2003.

This deal is believed to be a win for Rouhani and the Iranian people as the sanctions have been extremely damaging towards the Iranian economy.

The Iranian rial has depreciated by around two thirds against the US dollar and Iran’s oil revenues have been cut in half and its banking system cut off from international markets. Now, Iran is expected to gain access to around $100 billion in frozen assets and be able to export oil once sanctions relief kicks in.

This will yield benefits for Iran’s expanding middle class and raise Rouhani’s popularity within Iran.

In the US however, there is a different story. President Obama faces opposition from Republican majorities in both the House and Senate, where there is currently bi-partisan support for a bill which would require the president to submit the agreement to an up-or-down vote.

The White House has predicted the bill could kill the deal and Obama has threatened to veto it should it come to his desk.

President Obama’s insistence on maintaining the agreement is down to several reasons, the main one being that he believes a deal with Iran is the best way to prevent them from building a nuclear weapon. There is also the case that reactivating diplomacy between Iran and the United States could potentially be the first step towards bringing stability in the Middle East, as President Obama has already acknowledged the possibility of cooperation in the future on issues such as Syria.

Iran’s interest in nuclear technology dates back to the 1950’s when the United States began assisting them through the Atoms for Peace program. This support came to a halt after the 1979 Islamic Revolution and the overthrow of the U.S. backed Shah.

The Iran-Iraq war, 1980 to 1988, further soured relations between the West and Iran.

Iran’s attention turned to nuclear development once again in the early 1990’s, with cooperation from Pakistan, China and Russia, allowing Iran to make slight advancements. Iran’s nuclear activities made the US intelligence suspicious and their hostile relations with one another led to the belief that Iran did not have peaceful intentions and sought to create nuclear weapons. This belief was shared by other western nations such as the United Kingdom, France and Germany and led to the formation of the EU-3 and P5+1.

Harsh sanctions were imposed on Iran following UNSC Resolution 1737, which cited Iran’s continuing failure to meet the requirements of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s provisions regarding the suspension of enrichment related and reprocessing activities as the principal reasons for the economic sanctions. The main points of the agreement include; Iran getting rid of around 97% of its enriched uranium, permanently giving the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) access to random inspections, as well as Iran accepting that sanctions would be restored immediately if they were to violate any decisions reached.

A Game of Thrones: who will take the leadership of Britain’s parties?

ar from the blood soaked TV show that follows the struggle for the Iron Throne, there was little red soaking the map of Britain in this year’s fight for number 10. With defeat in this year’s General Election, Labour’s Ed Miliband and Nick

Clegg of the Liberal Democrats both step down in leadership to make way for the new frontrunners in British politics. With David Cameron promising a referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU in 2017, the success of the leadership of these opposition parties becomes all the more important in the future of the nation.

Over the period of the 2015 General election, Nigel Farage of UKIP, and PM Cameron have painted a right wing, anti-European hue in their words leaving the traditional Liberal Democrat support of the EU and Labour support in a stark contrast of opinion. The heads of these parties must prove to be effective leaders if they wish for their stance to on the EU referendum to be favoured and implemented.

Many would argue that the Labour response to the Green party surge is Jeremy Corbyn, social media darling and a discernible change from his rival candidates.

Corbyn stands against Yvette Cooper, Andy Burnham and Liz Kendall for the Labour leadership.

Beyond domestic politics Corbyn has been noted for his outspokenness on such topics as Palestine, where many political voices have previously fallen silent. A supporter of the Boycott Divestment and Sanctions movement to boycott Israeli products and institutions such as Universities that research arms, Corbyn would pledged a labour government to a two way arms embargo on Israel in support of Palestine which suffers under Israeli use of weapons produced by the UK. With this amongst many outgoing policies for a potential Corbyn led Labour it isn’t hard to see why he is so popular amongst the public and the media.

Venturing beyond the Tamar where the blue gives way to

many other party colours, I meet members of the Labour Party who despite the media popularity of Corbyn spend their vote with Cooper in mind.

The BBC Newsnight focus groups put Cooper ahead of Corbyn in the leadership race with former Labour voters. This ties well with her emphasis on trying to regain votes form the Conservatives and in particular the SNP in Scotland. As I sit in a room of young Labour supporters however Cooper is championed as the leader that isn’t considered too radical in party change as Corbyn is feared to be. In their 20s and distraught at the Conservative government they tell me that Cooper is more likely to win out of the more moderate candidates and won’t risk splitting the party as Party donor John Mills has previously stated. With YouGov figures putting Corbyn ahead at 53% of the leadership vote however it appears likely that he may win the race.

In the Liberal Democrat Party MP Tim Farron has been elected leader over MP Norman lamb taking 56.5% of the party vote.

After the loss of 48 of their 56 MPs this year the Liberal Democrats have taken to a new leader and a new fight for retaining Membership of the European Union. Where in the previous government the party had the power to keep the government European friendly, the current Conservative administration has been in an open attack of the Union and leading the nation to a referendum on its membership.

The new face of the growing party must work hard in the coming years to retain the UKs place in the European Union and regain the seats lost in 2015. Time will tell how effective his leadership will be but for now he attracts new members into the fold. 6

remember when I was at secondary school, whenever I was unable to attend an event my friends and I used to joke that I was too busy watching “Midsomer Murders” to go. For a while I joined in the hilarity (perhaps hilarity is too strong a word actually), relishing my role as “the guy that loves naff television shows like “Midsomer Murders””, but as time went by, I became possessive of the programme. When a friend jokingly questioned how the town of Midsomer was still populated when an average of three of its residents were killed each week, I replied in a rather superior tone that Midsomer was a county, not a town, and therefore his question had revealed his inherent stupidity. I was just as shocked that this fellow did not know such simple facts about the geography of a fictional county as I was when another chap confidently claimed that Denmark was the capital city of Paris!

“In a world where the summer blockbuster roster is often dominated by burly action heroes, it’s nice to be able to slip off to a world in which anyone can be a hero” I am afraid to say that my knowledge of “Midsomer Murders” gave me ideas above my station, and I was quick to respond smugly when a casual fan wondered aloud what the most ludicrous Midsomer Murders episode was, the answer being the one in which a chap gets staked to his garden with croquet hoops and then killed with wine

hurled at him from a trebuchet – or perhaps the one wherein Martine McCutcheon’s character gets crushed by a wheel of cheese.

“Whatever the faults of the genre, at least murder mysteries allow anyone to shine, regardless of background or even aptitude” My testimonials as a fan of slightly rubbish murder mysteries established, I feel I am at liberty to discuss the strange primacy of the genre in television schedules at the moment.

What with “New Tricks”, “Ripper Street”, “Tommy and Tuppence” and reruns of “Sherlock”, the BBC seems to have a murder for every night of the week. Many are quick to decry this state of affairs, but I’m not sure that they have considered the positives aspects of the genre. In a world where the summer blockbuster roster is often dominated by burly action heroes, it’s nice to be able to slip off to a world in which anyone can be a hero. For every genuine police detective on television there are several enthusiastic amateurs with next to no qualifications: I’m looking at you Miss Marple. Every temperament and profession is represented somewhere in the vast soup of crime drama. Gardeners, grumpy pensioners, aristocrats, magicians, opera fanatics and clergymen are all there somewhere. Even the wilfully irritating are represented by Hercule Poirot. I love Poirot, but my goodness, he is annoying. Poirot is a man for whom “a speck of dust would have caused... more pain that a bullet wound”, and was described by Agatha Chris-

tie as “a detestable, bombastic, tiresome, ego-centric little creep”.

And she invented the guy.

“Who wants to see a muscle-bound action hero solve a crime when you could have a short balding Belgian with a stupid moustache?”

The fact of that matter is that in the world of murder mystery, whatever your background or occupation; you can solve the crime and put things to rights.

I’m tempted to believe that the decidedly non-heroic nature of her protagonists is at least partly responsible for Agatha Christie’s enduring appeal. Who wants to see a muscle-bound action hero solve a crime when you could have a short balding Belgian with a stupid moustache? Whatever the faults of the genre, at least murder mysteries allow anyone to shine, regardless of background or even aptitude. Everyone’s a winner! Apart from the trebuchet guy of course.

Supporting Student Services: Something to Bear in Mind KATHERINE ILLSLEY

niversity is an incredible time for us all. The parties, the lie-ins, the freedom. The chance to study what you love, then go to the pub. It’s a special kind of heaven.

But, when the dust settles on your hang over, or the deadlines come rolling in, difficulties can arise which for many are all the more problematic to deal with because of university life itself. In a time where jobs are disappearing, whilst learning is at its priciest yet, universities have become

an epicentre for mental health difficulties.

“More than half of students with mental health difficulties don’t approach anyone

Figures from the Office of National Statistics reveal that within the last four years, the number of student suicides has doubled in women and risen by over a third in men, whilst the NUS discovered that a total of 20% of all UK students now experience mental health difficulties. In order to meet the massive demand for student support, the amount of institutions possessing mental health policies went from 27% in 2003 to 85% today, a positive and essential development. However, this increase in services clashed horribly with major funding cuts within the mental health sector. £600 million has disappeared over the duration of the last government, leaving a situation which chief executive of the Mental Health Network, Stephen Dalton, called “a car crash.”

This “car crash” has left staff and resources at student support services slashed, resulting in a damaging blow to their image.

This year, the Equality Challenge Unit discovered more than half of students with mental health difficulties hadn’t approached anyone about getting help, because they felt they would not receive the support that they need.

“Universities have become an epicentre for mental health difficulties” Indeed, when I personally contacted a university support service after a difficult term ended in *oh god* seeing the enclosed reindeers at the Snow Ball as a metaphor for myself, drinking around thirty shots of mince pie flavoured vodka and crying on a security guard, I had to wait three weeks just for a telephone referral. By the time they rang, I lost my nerve and decided not to pursue their help. Aside from the personal impact that not 8

providing the optimum level of service causes, it is set in stone by the UUK/GuildHE Mental Wellbeing in Higher Education Group in their definitive ‘Good Practice Guide’, that “institutions will need to ensure that they have in place effective and robust arrangements, policies and procedures for managing students with mental health difficulties”.

They risk violating the Health and Safety at Work, Equality, and Human Rights Acts if they don’t.

It’s kind of a big deal.

“We need improvements, as a matter of urgency” Externally, the Disabled Students Allowance (DSA), a life line for many students meeting expenses caused by long term mental health conditions, has been largely reduced since January. Also, with mass university medical centre closure, and the likelihood of the minimum practice income guarantee (MIPG) that keeps many local GP practices in service being phased out, referrals to doctors following support consultations are becoming a battle.

“20% of all UK studnets now experience mental health difficulties” In March, an extra £1.25 billion was announced to be included in the budget for supporting youth mental health services over the next five years. The Conservatives have pledged to stick to this, but there is a large amount of scepticism within the field over whether or not it will actually be implemented correctly. As students, I feel it is our duty to also keep an eye on the situation. We need improvements, now, as a matter of urgency. The statistics don’t lie.

Is coming to University straight after A-Levels really the best option?

on’t take it personally, but contrary to popular opinion, I don’t think flying the nest when the dust from results day has barely had a chance to settle is necessarily a good idea.

Take it from me; I was once your wide-eyed, fresh-faced eighteen year old self.

I recognise the impulse, the borderline compulsion to get as far away from the confines of home as soon as is humanly possible but what difference does a year make, really? Instead, I suggest you get a terrible, prospect-less, misery-inducing job; put yourself at the mercy of a malevolent manager, so angry at their own disappointing lives that they live to see you suffer.

I’d suggest waiting/waitressing if you’re a real masochist. Alternatively, you could travel, volunteer at a home for AIDS orphans in Madagascar, do a sponsored dog sled across the Arctic, live in a hammock in a rainforest. If you’re more of a sadist, paste all of your smug travelling pictures on Facebook and liberally apply the hashtag “blessed”. Even doing nothing for a year is a worthwhile use of your A-Levels, or at least a worthwhile use of “General Studies”.

If you can survive an extra, voluntary year at home under parental surveillance, whilst working a job from hell, then it will make all-nighters in the library, drowning in reading, seem easy. There’s nothing like a year of life in the real world to make you appreciate the opportunity to act like an alcoholic with narcolepsy, whilst simultaneously basking in the glory of having a year to scrape a third without any serious consequences, something that requires a state of not even semi-consciousness.

Also, any survival skills you pick up while living in a tent on the side of a mountain in the Himalayas for a year, would also make living through the winter, with a broken radiator in freezing student accommodation, much more manageable.

“If we’re being made to work longer, we should be allowed to be juvenile for longer as well” Besides, how many people actually have practical career goals, or experience in their field of interest, or even any experience of the real working world when starting as an undergraduate? Why must our careers start at twenty-one, if we’re going to have to keep working until we’re eighty, because we’re living to a hundred. Taking this factor into account, my calculations suggest we don’t need to even think about personal statements and UCAS until we’re gone thirty. If we’re being made to work longer, we should be allowed to be juvenile for longer as well. It’s only fair compensation for inheriting an economy that won’t let us retire until we’re being wheeled into work on a stretcher, shortly before we’re then wheeled back out in a box.

If you’re thinking tactically, why not buck the trend of having children later and later in life and have them whilst still relatively young? Take a couple of years out to fulfil your base instinct to procreate and then start to make your way in the world while your offspring are busy learning to thread pasta necklaces. Even if

that puts a delay on things for five years, your working career will still be longer than those of most of our parents’ generation.

“I definitely think a gap between sixthform/college and starting a degree is a good idea” It is also often said that our university experiences, whilst undergraduates, mould us into the adults we eventually become, however unwillingly. But how about we arrive when we’re more adult and better equipped to mould our universities into the institutions we want them to be, as opposed to vice versa.

We’re not fresh recruits to the army, there to be broken down by the establishment to then be built back up into their image of perfect privates. A higher level of maturity and confidence would make our “freshers experience” less likely to be about looking after the Bambi-like homesick kid, who’s never left their parents side before and only stopped being breast-fed last week.

So, well done to those who have already had their ‘gap yah’ and have stockpiled a wealth of anecdotes about travelling across south-east Asia. Feel very smug - maybe your decision to wring out another year of life without responsibility was a wise one. Or maybe I’m just futilely trying to delay the influx of new freshers to Falmouth, jealous as I am of their freedom and negligible workload, I suppose torching the Tamar Bridge is always a potential back-up plan.

Is Donald Trump the biggest joke of the Presidential Primaries?

T

rump’s entrance in U.S politics has been hard to ignore, what with the ballsy businessman being extensively covered in the press. More about entertainment than policy, the U.S media’s coverage of American politics is a bit ridiculous, and Trump and his presidential campaign epitomises just this. Launched on June 16th, the announcement that the business magnate would be running for President was met with varying reactions, mainly that of a collective eye roll.

That exasperation has not abated since June, if anything it has only been fuelled by his controversial comments on various topics.

For example, when addressing the topic of Mexican immigrants, he unabashedly claimed that Mexico was “bringing drugs, and bringing crime, and their rapists” to the US. Although no other comments have been quite as spectacularly awful as that one, Trump hasn’t held back from offending Chinese and African Americans too, thus instantly alienating a large majority of the American electorate. His comments, however, are not only directed at American minorities, but at his fellow American politicians, too. He called South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham “a stiff ”, Jeb Bush a “puppet” and claims that Texas Governor Rick Perry only wears glasses “so people will think he is smart”.

However, to find Trump a joke would be to find the American media to be a bit of a joke too (which is not an uncommon opinion).

Although, generally, he may not be the most well liked Presidential candidate, he has succeeded, through coming out with such ridiculous quotes, in what many politicians during campaigns aim for: being the centre of attention. By continually coming out with such attention grabbing opinions, and the subsequent media frenzy around whatever Trump may have said rather than the actual politics of the campaign period, he remains the most talked about Presidential candidate in this year’s primaries.

Being a household name is a powerful position for any presidential candidate to be in. For Trump, not coming from a traditionally political background, rather one of television, business and real estate, has only aided him in this endeavour. Less politically engaged American citizens will have heard his name on the news or in conversation and will be the only candidate that they might have heard anything about, therefore a candidate they would consider voting for.

However, as much of a joke you may think Donald Trump is, perhaps, reluctantly, it is time to start taking him more seriously. His rise in the polls tells us undeniably how popular he is becoming with many American Republicans. Holding 25% of the vote when 17 candidates are running is no small feat. Statistics like these are clear eye openers to the possible reality of Trump succeeding in his campaign to become America’s next President. His buzzword filled campaign slogan “Make America great again” may just fool enough people into voting for him.

You may see Trump as an awful candidate for the American Presidency, but it is undeniable that he is playing the political game very well. Some may even go so far as to say that he is recreating the political game as his own. If you are wondering why Trump continued to do so well following the Republican leaders’ debate, and continues to do so well in general, I think his permanent position in the media spotlight is why.

n today’s world, there is no doubt that transport is infinitely easier than at any other previous point in time. Getting from place to place, crossing oceans, countries, continents and everything in between is a comparatively seamless process. This summer I travelled to the U.S. to work at a summer-camp, and from all the experience this brought, two outstanding thoughts were the notions that distance means nothing and everything at the same time. The camp employed people from all over the world; coming from New Zealand, across the globe, or Pittsburg, just a few hours’ drive away. The benefits of the ease of travel now become evident.

This blend of people meant there was an incredible diversity of talent, knowledge and culture. The distances that we had all travelled set a precedent for adventure, the notion that we all came from different places with blind expectations gave the counsellors a feeling of overwhelming excitement and surprise. After just one week together, friendships had been made that would last for the whole summer, and more. In this sense the best thing from this experience was the people. Living with strangers, who we knew were just in exactly the same position as we were, brought everyone out of their own independent bubble. No wonder the main motto for the summer was ‘disconnect to connect’, because distance also meant everything. We were all ‘away’ from somewhere, whether first-timers or returners, we all had somewhere we were coming from and none of us had the comfort of calling camp home.

But it did become home, and for eight weeks there was little distraction from the outside world and disconnecting opened a whole new set of doors, and that’s a side effect of distance. Where there is comfort, there tends to be a whole set of services available, from wifi, to Netflix to swiping in Candy Crush endlessly in some zombie-cycle limbo state. Instead, when there were evenings off there was sports, or trips after a frenetic scramble to find someone willing to lend their car for the night. It was exciting, refreshing and thrilling to lead a life where spontaneity led the way instead of settling for less. The job itself was the most engaging activity I have ever carried out, and I call it an activity because of the sheer non-stop nature of it. Being placed in an environment constantly surrounded by campers, campers who live for these two months out of the year comes to show how unique and empowering it is to unite a group of people coming from everywhere. The bonds created transcend beyond camp and these campers remain best friends throughout the year and most likely throughout their lives.

In my case, this experience has been one of those words-can’tdescribe-it ones as a whole, but the distance to it, the fact that it was a whole new place, was the best change I could want. Summer is the time to travel, to leave home behind and take a break from routines, because the truth is that nowadays, distance is outdated.

STUDENT STORIES who after an extended break, has returned to education to study Creative Writing at Falmouth University. When asked what brought him here he told me, with a laugh, of an ex-girlfriend and a very eventful bet: ‘I was going out with a girl who was a primary school teacher, an old friend of mine, and we were joking about the fact that I had no education, because I literally had one GCSE.’ He continued, ‘I had made a bet with her [his then girlfriend] that I could get a better degree than she had. So I took myself back to Truro College, and through that got a place at Falmouth.’

As an avid reader and an equally keen writer, this course offers him the essential experience

needed to hone his craft. I asked him what he has found helpful, to which he replied that ‘really going back to basics and asking questions like what is genre, how do you form a sentence, what is the context, all those things, actually, are really worth learning.’

While it may seem obvious, nailing down those types of questions is tricky, and any help a budding writer can get is no doubt more than welcome. ‘I definitely think my writing has improved massively, and I feel much more confident in getting to the point of sending stuff out for publication.’

Writing a novel is a dream that many young authors share, and for Rufus, it’s a goal he’s had rambling around in his head for quite some time now. ‘This course has helped me develop that [his novel], definitely.’ When I pushed him to any details regarding his idea, he keeps his cards close to his chest, revealing only that ‘one is coming out as a clear, clear idea now which I could sustain for several hundred pages.’

I spoke to Rufus about life outside of university, and in particular how he finds his experience of living on a boat. Rufus first

parents when we started life. Since then, there has been no doubt in my mind that the opportunities I have been presented with would not have been possible, or even accessible had I not been adopted into my family. However, such a positive outcome may not always be evident. Children and young adoptees often struggle with mind-blowing consequences surrounding trust, guilt and identity because of their adopted status.

This is not to say that I am against adoption in any way, I certainly would not be where I am without it, but there is a side to adoption that needs to be talked about, understood and brought into account with the decision to adopt.

American writer Nancy Newton Verrier, in her book ‘The Primal Wound’, explains that there are three outcomes as a general rule.

Two of these are diametrically opposed attitudes towards the mother. The final third seem to not suffer from these more extreme effects. Similarly, babies

who have been in incubators after birth or had to be kept separate from the mother will often present these issues.

The main questions I come across in myself and other adoptees are “Who am I?”, “Where are my birth parents?” and “Who were they?”, “. I am lucky that the reality of being adopted was always exciting; a mystery about myself that I could pursue as an adventure. Yes, all the above questions apply to me, I don’t know any adoptee who isn’t curious, but I see them as positive questions. Perhaps this comes down to having always known I am adopted. Since I could remember, my mum has always explained to me what adoption meant and answered any questions I had about it. Still, some of the adoptees I know have had very different reactions to being adopted, especially when they have been told at a later stage in their lives.

he effects, both positive and negative, of adoption are increasingly the subject of research in many countries around the world. As an adoptee myself, I know that being adopted can be a hugely positive influence in your life, but as with most things, this is not always the case. What I can also say is that no matter what your opinion of adoption is, you will have questions about it; regardless of whether you are adopted yourself, are an adoptive mother or have nothing to do with adoption at all. These questions may arise out of simple curiosity, or from having a more direct association with adoption.

In my case, my twin sister and I were adopted at the age of 6 months from half-way across the world. It still astounds me how far I have travelled to be with my family and where home truly is for me. We had different names, different citizenship and different

bought himself a small dingy and taught himself how to sail, ‘And the next year, I bought the boat which I live on now,’ he told me. To say that he has an affinity for the water would be an understatement. Completely self-taught, Rufus isn’t one to shy away from a challenge when it comes to sailing. ‘Everyone I was talking to said “Oh, you know, it takes years to learn how to sail, it’s really difficult” and “well maybe you could sail it [talking about his new boat] if you were really good, you know.”’ But undeterred by these warnings, Rufus took his newly purchased boat to a river in North Devon where he picked it up instantly.

Rufus lives on his boat, choosing to moor in Falmouth harbour, as ‘Plymouth is a bit grim.’

When I asked him how he finds life permanently on the sea, he tells me it’s all about compromising. ‘You trade off the price you pay for convenience, being able to turn on the taps to get water and watch the TV, for free living.’

We look forward to seeing any work that Rufus produces, and hope that he enjoys the rest of his course here in Falmouth. the lately realised possible mental health issues surrounding adoption. In my opinion this is a huge topic that needs to be openly discussed so that awareness can be brought to as many adopting parents as possible and hopefully reduce any negative outcomes that may be associated with adoption.

Previously, adoption had been seen and treated as a ‘taboo’ subject, which resulted in shutting off conversations and informative reflections as an inappropriate subject. However, there has in fact been a great deal of recent research into the impact of adoption which I feel is important that all parties understand and discuss freely.

Adoption has always been an open topic for discussion around our dinner table. I feel this should be the case for all families, whether they relate to adoption or not. Opening up of this topic to the public cannot only shed significant insight into the world of adoption. In my view, adoption is a huge opportunity for many children and can convert a child’s life.

ARTS The Gift ****

I

t’s extremely easy to draw comparisons between Joel Edgerton’s directorial debut The Gift and recent hit thriller Gone Girl. Both surface the underlying tensions of seemingly stable marriages. Both contain crazy characters. And both succeed at being thrilling thrillers. Whereas the grand scope of Gone Girl appeals to vast audiences and offers full-throttle thrills, the subtle intricacies of The Gift set it apart.

The Gift is what all good thrillers should be. It is cold yet warm, dark yet light, alien yet eerily close to home. Cinematographer Eduard Grau seamlessly instils a crisp touch of frost into an ultra-familiarised western world, right from the opening shot. Scenes blend from light to dark and everywhere in between, creating a mood reflective of the strained marriage of Robyn (Rebecca Hall) and Simon (Jason Bateman). In a sense, it is the enigmatic Gordo (Joel Edgerton) who casts the shadows, instigating conflict from outside the narrative’s central relationship.

While Robyn sees plenty of screen time, many will question her significance in a film which at first, appears to focus on a conflict between two men. Yet despite the film’s likening to Hitchcock’s Psycho, Robyn is more than a damsel in distress. She is our eyes and ears, our voyeur into the mystery of her husband and his hazy past. Robyn’s perspective adds a new dimension to Gordo, making this a far less straightforward thriller than initially expected. The trio thus have us questioning their every move, partaking in solving the mystery - and ensuring the unfolding horror show is all the more terrifying.

Edgerton is an auteur in the making, his quietly captivating thriller a neatly packaged gift to cinema-goers. Whilst it may lack the traditional Hollywood-scale shock factor, the film is far more balanced and emotionally absorbing than expected.

Dr Strangelove ***** PATRICK LIDDLE

M

oments before human civilization is wiped from the Earth by an obscene Soviet superweapon (a catastrophe set to Vera Lynn’s “We’ll Meet Again”), the eponymous character of Dr. Strangelove delivers the film’s final line: “Mein Fuhrer! I can walk!”. As an indictment of Mutally Assured Destruction – for being absurd, for being self-absorbed, for being genocidal – it takes the same stance as the film it concludes, but whereas it is absurd in a quotable, Pytonesque fashion, the hours of absurdity that precede it owe far more to Jonathan Swift and Joseph Heller than John Cleese.

For all the slapstick derived from fistfights between squalling diplomats, and for all the sexual innuendo derived from names such as “Merkin Muffley” and “Buck Turgidson”, this film is less keen to invoke guffaws as it is to create the kind of constant, quiet smiling – spilling over into the occasional bleak chuckle – one gets when a complex tragedy is perfectly summarized. The absurdity of Major Kong waving his cowboy hat as he rides a nuclear bomb down onto Soviet Soil is second to the absurdism of watching men attempt to fashion protocol, flattery and sexual fantasies into something able to prevent the destruction of the Earth. Punchlines in Dr. Stran-

gelove don’t follow jokes; they follow heavy paragraphs of character establishment, and the laughter gets screwed out of the audience in trickles as, bit by bit, the character is reframed. Indeed, the dramatic sincerity with which Dr. Strangelove approaches characterization is what betrays its bleakest joke: this is not a ridiculous film. This is a stark, honest look at a period of human history too ridiculous not to laugh at.

Jurassic World **** JOESEPH PARKINSON

pon being asked for a short review of the summer film “Jurassic World”, I decided to dispense with the usual journalistic considerations of plot, characterisation and general quality, instead focusing a few issues that particularly bugged me about this largely enjoyable film.

Now before I begin, I must say that I thought “Jurassic World” was an enjoyable, well-executed action film. What with explosions, crashing helicopters and giant dinosaurs, one certainly got a lot for one’s money. Even better, the film played homage to the more auspicious aspects of the previous films, while tacitly overlooking the bits that we’d all perhaps rather forget (Fortunately the Tyrannosaur loose in San Diego from Jurassic Park 2 is swept under the carpet) That said, there were also a few elements that came across as decidedly peculiar.

First of all, the costumes were at times utterly ludicrous. It was only when park manager Claire showed up to shoot a flying beastie straight in the face that I noticed that she had been wearing high heels for the entire film. Now I’m sorry, but that is just ridiculous.

The concept of a hybrid dinosaur pursuing a theme park manager seems relatively plausible next to the concept of a hybrid dinosaur pursuing a theme park manger who is wearing high heels. Couldn’t she have stopped somewhere to change her shoes at some point? It’s hard to look glamorous when you’re being eaten by a dinosaur regardless of footwear, so why take the risk? I was also upset by the lack of fashionable headwear, considering the fact that Warden Muldoon’s safari hat was amongst my favourite elements from “Jurassic Park”. I’d rather have a stylish hat than a potentially savage dinosaur any day.

Another question that bugged me throughout the screening was about InGen, the evil company at the heart of the franchise. Why does this company insist upon fulfilling the role of both genetic research specialist and private military corporation? It seems like a jarring combination. Imagine if someone on “Dragon’s Den” said “My idea is for a criminally negligent genetics company/PMC and I need £2,000,000 to hire people to mop up all the blood” – That’s an “I’m out” moment. If you went onto “The Apprentice” with an idea like that, Lord Sugar would rip you into more pieces than a velociraptor would.

I was also a bit disappointed by the lukewarm happy ending. I was convinced that Claire, as manager of the theme parks operations, would be arrested for criminal negligence in allowing a dinosaur to slaughter hundreds of innocent people. I’m not sure she’d even mind going to prison as long as she was allowed to keep her high heels.

Regardless of all this, my curmudgeonly grievances fade into the background, as “Jurassic World” has now made more money than an actual theme park full of dinosaurs would have made, and is generally an enjoyable, explosively exciting experience. Dinomite, one might say.

Life lessons from procrastination

uring the exam period most students find their minds wandering to summer, regardless of whether they have plans. Then consequently those who don’t, decide to make them – an ideal procrastination tool.

That was what happened to me, when I spontaneously applied to be an Au Pair in Madrid.

I discovered the company Smaller Earth, who match Au Pairs with families through an extensive application process.

This was followed by an interview with Smaller Earth, a

Skype interview with my family and a decision hearing. Though lengthy, this ensures you are comfortable with your family and guarantees a contract, set hours and a reasonable pay.

3-page summer special The experience of firstly, traveling alone, and secondly, being greeted by a family of strangers, was intimidating to say the least. However, you accept that there will inevitably be some awkwardness – as it is equally as daunting for both parties.

My Host Mum took a few days to make me familiar with the job and the children’s routine, giving me time to adjust before I was full-time. In truth, the experience of living in another family’s home has never become completely normal to me, and this seems to usually be the case.

However, I am lucky to have had a very caring family, who made the best effort to ensure I’m comfortable and welcomed– constantly inviting me on family outings and buying my favorite cereal (it’s the little things).

Whilst settling in I found it important to establish what was expected of me as their Au Pair – I was required to work between 9 and 4, give them breakfast and lunch, take them swimming, allow them specifically 1 hour of television (Bubble Guppies being my favorite – who doesn’t love mermaids and a catchy theme tune?) and through crafts and games, teach them English. For my family, unlike others, this didn’t require textbook lessons,

but merely routine introductions of English phrases and vocabulary. My main goal was to not seem like a constant teacher, and to incorporate English in a subtle and enjoyable way, as they’re 3 and 5 years old.

Madrid is a beautiful city with so much to offer – the food, the culture, the music - having it on my doorstep, has been a dream.

Being in the center makes a perfect base for venturing further; I chose Segovia, El Escorial and Barcelona. This required me to travel alone, hoping to meet people along the way – which I did, and I can’t imagine not having shared this with them.

Six Weeks in Isolation with King Julian (or not…)

anthropological arguments for both Indonesian and African origins but it is common ground that colonisation is fairly recent (~2000 years ago). The culture revolves a lot around the wild life. For example, many of the local people, especially in the more isolated regions, would not touch a chameleon because they believe that their independently moving eyes allow them to look into both the past and the future.

fter close to twenty hours spent in airports and on aeroplanes, landing in Madagascar was a relief. Or was until the twelve hour bus drive north, followed by four hours hard off-roading in a converted cattle truck to base camp. In the first couple of hours after arrival, we saw lizards, snakes and lemurs that came down from the canopy into the branches just above our tents.

Spending six weeks trekking through jungle in search of reptiles is not, I understand, everyone’s ideal way to spend their summer. However, for me it was an exciting opportunity (who doesn’t want to see King Julian in real life?) to explore Madagascar’s dry forests and collect data for my dissertation project.

I travelled to Madagascar alone, to join up with Operation Wallacea, an international scientific research organisiation.

Madagascar itself is home to many unique species, of which over 80 % can be found nowhere else in the world. My project was based on chameleons, but I had opportunities to interact with all the other wildlife while I was there.

“It was an exciting opportunity to explore Madagascar’s dry forests and collect data” Madagascan Independence Day fell in the first week and this gave us a chance to get to know the locals in the huge celebrations held by Mariarano village,

where you could find our base camp. We were invited to watch local schools perform a dance for us after a speech from the Mayor of Mariarano. After their performances, we felt obliged, as ungraceful as we were, to return the favour. Our dance was greeted with loud laughter, but also, thankfully, some applause.

The many species found only there are known as endemic species and the reason for this high ratio of endemism, is that the island has been in evolutionary isolation for around 165 million years. Less talked about is the interesting culture found there. It is thought that the Malagasy people are of mixed origins and there are

Another Malagasy belief revolves around the leaf tailed geckos. The largest of these is the Europlatus Henkeli. If captured, these small, nocturnal lizards will scream at you, and the Malagasy believe that a scream in the dark shouldn’t go unanswered.

So, it’s tradition to scream back.

As you may imagine, some of us had a lot of fun with this one.

Of all the adventures I had in Madagascar, the most memorable and terrifying, was a trip on the Croc boat through the mangroves. After spotting eye-shine all night and not being able to catch anything, one of the other dissertation students, Dave, noosed a massive crocodile on the trip back to the jetty. Not only was the beast too big to be hauled onto the boat, but it proceeded to let out the loudest and most terrifying, guttural growls.

We had to tow this beast back to the jetty and haul it onto the bank to get a DNA sample and measurements before releasing him back into the mangrove.

So, Madagascar, although wild and hard to get to, offers many amazing opportunities; from walking around a crocodile farm to catching one in the wild for measurements and a DNA sample! There is no end to the extraordinary wealth of wildlife and culture on this beautiful island. My only disappointment was that I didn’t actually meet King Julian!

eing a child who has grown up outside of my place of birth, the UK, means that my idea of identity and home is a little different from many other people my age. The place I call home is the United Arab Emirates (The UAE), which is located on the Arabian Peninsula in the Middle East and so; my geographical comforts, familiar culture and the experiences that moulded my personality while growing up lie there.

During the summer break this year, I went to Malaysia with my family. It provided me with a series of experiences that took me out of my comfort zone, for sure.

From having a Python wrapped round my torso, to walking five kilometres up a one in three hill in torrential jungle rain, to being chased down a hill by a very angry monkey! I’m certain that all these experiences will eventu-

ally shape into funny stories one day. Even the more reflective moments of the trip, where it was just palm trees, a hammock and I, these moments were the things I seem to remember most.

I feel that the moments where one feels challenged, scared or even completely hypnotised by the sound of the sea are the moments when you grow.

Travelling distances always leads me to reflect on my own life back at home, the experiences I have had as well as the people I’ve met. Even though being away from home during the summer means being away from friends, loved ones and in my case 50 degree heat, getting out of my comfort zone in either the mental, physical or geographical sense, maybe even all of them, should be embraced by everyone who has an opportunity to do so.

Possibly the best feeling of coming back after time away from it all always induces the “Ahh… Home!” feeling.

A guide to Sports Clubs for the 2015/2016 season

The new university year means the start of the new season for the sports societies. As well as the usual football, rugby and cricket, the more unusual sports such as Quidditch, Ultimate Frisbee and Underwater Hockey also get underway. So, in readiness for a new year of sport, here’s a guide to some of the sports on offer.

Tridents American Football Team

American Football is one of the fastest growing university sports in the country, and to take the challenge to the nations’ best is the FXU Tridents team. As well as hosting social events such as their annual Superbowl Party in the Stannery, the Tridents compete in the British Universities & Colleges Sport American Football League, South West Region. Although it may appear a sport for guys built like brick walls who open doors by head butting their way through, American Football is a sport that is suitable for all. Social Secretary Ollie Steer says “there are positions for people of all skill levels and, more importantly, all builds.”

Another quality of this growing sport in the UK is the team spirit and close friendship that comes from being part of a university team.

According to Ollie, “The camaraderie is one the best parts of the sport, and it only helps to heighten you enjoyment of the physical side, as your teammates push you to be the best you can be and give you constant encouragement.” If you fancy being part of the Tridents, they will be holding taster sessions on 16th and 23rd September from 8-9:30pm, meeting outside Glasney Lodge at 7:30

Quidditch Quidditch may have its origins in the world of Harry Potter, but it has developed it into a highly competitive sport in its own right, separate from the fictional world of magic that produced it. This fast paced, full contact sport that combines dodgeball, rugby, handball and basketball is rapidly becoming one of the most popular university sports in the world.

The Falmouth Falcons Quidditch Team compete not only at national level against university teams from all over Britain but have also taken on the best teams on the continent in the European Quidditch Championships. 2014/15 was a strong season for the Falcons and they will be looking to build on their strong form in 2015/16. To do that they need fresh new faces to help them continue their success, so head up to the Exchange Lecture Theatre on 15th September at 5pm for a meet and greet before a taster session on 19th and 26th September from 11-2:30 at the Dracaena Centre.

LACROSSE While American Football is the fastest growing US sport in the UK, the fastest growing sport in America is lacrosse, and it’s pretty popular over here too. FXU Lacrosse Men’s Captain Logan Lloyd says, “Lacrosse is the fastest growing sport in the USA, anyone can play lacrosse. It’s a full contact sport, and is a lot of hard work at first, but once you have the knack of how to play it’s extremely satisfying.

As long as you’re up for a demanding sport which requires skill and co-ordination, then lacrosse is perfect”. Both the men’s and women’s teams train twice a week at the MUGA and Penryn College, if you want to join them and give lacrosse a go, then taster sessions are being run on 15th and 22nd September at the MUGA, and 25th September at Penryn College.

Like hockey, but with hard hitting tackles. This Gaelic sport has been a success story for students in Cornwall as the CSM Shinty team have made a significant impact on the sport, winning the first ever English Universities Shinty Tournament in March and some members competing for the Cornwall Shinty Club at the English Shinty Championships. The team also compete at various tournaments around the country, from Bristol to London to St Andrews. Open to all who want to give it a try, they will be holding a taster session on 19th September from 1-3pm at the MUGA 18
