Auctioneer - Don Oberg Don Oberg is a professional auctioneer from Camrose, Alberta, who graduated top of class in 1993 from the Canadian Western School of Auctioneering in Calgary. Don is co-owner of Barnburner Productions, an auction company specializing in charity fundraiser events. In 1998, Don was the inaugural winner of the Jim Raffan Memorial Award voted on by fellow auctioneers as most congenial/professional. Don also became the first two-time winner of this award in 2003, the same year he was named Canadian Champion livestock auctioneer. Don is a five-time top ten finalist at the International Livestock Auctioneering Championships and a six-time consecutive qualifier for the World Livestock Auctioneering Championships.

Announcer - Mike Adams Mike Adams was a featured announcer at Spruce Meadows in Calgary for many years. He began working with the number one show jumping facility back in its inception in 1975. In addition, Mike’s familiar voice was heard at many show jumping and equestrian events around Alberta and British Columbia. His professional background is seated in the world of television where he was a sportscaster and producer for both the CTV and CBC television networks. He was the winner of a prestigious Canpro Gold Award for programming while with CFCN television in Calgary. Mike brings a commitment to excellence in any undertaking.

Pedigree Reader - Ron Anderson Ron Anderson was born and raised in the rural Calgary area. He has been a horse professional virtually all of his life. He has been involved in purebred horse sales by public auction for over four decades. Ron and his wife Marilyn operate a small training facility NE of Calgary. In addition to his training business Ron is a busy western event host. He has provided commentary for a wide range of agriculture-related endeavors including attendance at most major agricultural and equine events in Western Canada as a public events announcer. Whether it is a sale, a competition or an evening of equine celebration, Ron will most likely be in attendance. To quote Ron, “I like horses, horse people and horse events. The order of preference for these ‘likes’ varies from day to day.” ~8~

Sale Veterinarian - Dr. Rick Katchuik Dr. Rick Katchuik graduated from Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 1991. For the first twelve years of practice, he was involved primarily in feedlot and cow/calf practice as well as servicing a small number of equine clients. In 1995, Dr. Katchuik purchased a thoroughbred stallion and a small number of mares and began learning about equine reproduction. For the past eighteen years, Dr Katchuik has been developing and expanding the range of equine veterinary services being offered by Alberta Veterinary Center. This includes breeding some 150 mares per year and performing embryo transfer on 40–50 others. Last year he built the first ICSI lab for horses in Canada and has spent the last twelve months learning and perfecting that technique. Collection and freezing services for both bull and stallion clients are also offered. Dr. Katchuik performs a wide variety of other procedures such as joint arthroscopies and soft tissue surgeries as well as lameness exams and dentistry. He is married to Lorrie Jamieson and lives on their horse rearing and training facility north of Sylvan Lake. His three sons are Kelsey, Riley, and Michael. Kelsey is currently attending business school in Edmonton while Riley is studying sciences at the U of A. The youngest, Michael, is entering his final year of high school. Most of Rick’s spare time is spent helping his wife with the horses on the farm or tinkering in his reproductive laboratory.

Diagnostic Imaging Consultant - Dr. Alfredo Romero Dr Alfredo Romero is board-certified in surgery, and both a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) and a Society member in the American College of Veterinary Radiology (ACVR).

Originally from the Boston Massachusetts area, Dr Romero completed his veterinary degree at Cornell University in 2005. Following veterinary school, Dr Romero completed an internship in equine surgery at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington KY, followed by a residency in large animal surgery at the University of California, Davis. After 2 years as a surgeon at Mid-Atlantic Equine Medical Center in NJ, Dr Romero started a highly successful primary and referral equine medical centre outside of Syracuse NY. He joined the University of Calgary in 2015. Dr Romero has advanced training in orthopaedics and imaging. He is also trained in equine and large animal rescue. ~9~

Chairman’s Message - Jennette Coote Welcome to the 25th anniversary of the Fall Classic Breeders’ Sale. Started and run by volunteers of the Alberta Chapter of the Canadian Warmblood Horse Breeders Association, this sale has been a long-term labour of love for the warmblood horse.

The initial goals, and the continuing foundation, of the sale were to bring together quality, young warmblood horses and buyers in one central location that was easy to access for buyers and sellers alike. We wanted to give breeders anywhere in Western Canada a venue to sell and promote their horses and, at the same time, provide buyers with the ability to view a number of potential prospects in one place. From the beginning, we have followed the precept of breeding quality warmbloods that combine strong pedigrees, inspections, and performance testing. We created a friendly environment with buyer protection at the forefront of our thoughts, endeavouring to show the skill level of each horse and allow clients the opportunity to try and compare a variety of horses. Twenty-five years later, we are still answering to market needs and demands and reflecting the changes required.

This year we have an exciting selection of proven performance horses along with under saddle prospects ready to enter the show ring. Or, if you’re looking for a great pedigree with excellent potential, consider the selection of two-year-olds, yearlings, and foals offering world-renowned pedigrees and quality individuals.

This sale has it all, including the comfort of shopping under one roof in a heated environment and a good party to celebrate our 25th anniversary.

Sale Information Horse Eligibility

1) Horses eligible for nomination must be registered Canadian Warmblood or with another recognized Warmblood registry, AND; a) the offspring of a stallion licensed or approved by a recognized Warmblood registry AND; b) the offspring of a mare inspected by a recognized Warmblood registry AND; c) have Warmblood pedigree content as recognized by the CWHBA Articles of Incorporation or, in the case of Thoroughbred, Arab, or Anglo-Arab, be a: i) Mare inspected and entered into the CWHBA Stud Book and confirmed to be in foal by a stallion that is licensed or approved by the CWHBA. ii) Stallion that has been inspected and entered in the CWHBA Stud Book.

Recognized Warmblood registries include but are not limited to: Dutch Warmblood Oldenburg 1.1 American Hanoverian Trakehner Baden-Wurttemburg Hanoverian Selle Français Weilkopolski Belgian Warmblood Hessen Swedish Warmblood Westfalen Danish Warmblood Holstein Swiss Warmblood 1.2 Providing horses meet CWHBA standards for warmblood registration: Canadian Sport Horse Rheinland-Pfalz-Saar Int. Sport Horse

2) Priority will be given to Candian-born horses but a limited number of imports may be permitted at the discretion of the sale committee with proof of Canadian ownership.

3) Prospects Under Saddle must be 6 years of age or under as of the date of the sale.

4) Performance horses must be 12 years of age or under as of the date of the sale.

5) Broodmares must: a) be 15 years of age or under as of the date of the sale AND; b) meet the same soundness requirements as all other sale horses.

6) Pregnant mares must; a) meet breed eligibility requirements (including inspection) AND; b) be covered by a stallion entered in the CWHBA studbook AND; c) have pregnancy confirmed within the 21 days prior to the date of the sale.

All consigned horses may be subject to drug testing and all owners agree that by consigning their horse(s) they will allow their horse(s) to be tested according to the EC, Alberta Zone Medications Control Committee, Chapter XV. All sale horses must have age-appropriate current vaccinations for E and W Encephalitis, Tetanus, Flu, Rhinopneumonitis, and West Nile. Pregnant mares must have current vaccinations along with Pneumabort at 5, 7, and 9 months gestation. A veterinarian must verify all shots. ~ 11 ~

An ELISA or Coggins Test for Equine Infectious Anemia is required for all horses.

X-rays are required for all horses age 3 and over except broodmares. For all other horses x-rays are optional.

All information and representations are the sole responsibility, and made on behalf of, the seller.

The seller warrants that each horse consigned to the sale is free and clear of all liens and encumbrances.

Each consigned horse must successfully complete an insurance equivalent physical examination, including musculoskeletal, eye, respiratory, and heart. This is not a complete pre-purchase exam.

Each consigned horse is required to successfully undergo a pre-sale inspection by a selection committee, including the sale veterinarian. All consigned horses must be presented to the selection committee in-hand and will be evaluated for health, basic soundness, and turnout.

Pregnant mares have pregnancy confirmed within 10 days of the date of the sale.

Weanling age foals offered at sale may be shown at the foot of their dam.

The Auction Committee reserves the right to refuse or withdraw any horse from the sale without refund or liability to anyone.

Terms and Conditions 1. All bidders must register at the sale office. The auctioneer will accept bids ONLY from registered bidders.

2. No Broodmare, Embryo Transfer, Young Prospect or 2-Year-Old will be sold for under $3000, and no Prospect Under Saddle or Performance Horse for under $6000.

3. Each horse will be sold to the highest bidder as determined by the auctioneer, whose decision is final and who, along with the sale staff, acts as agent for the seller but assumes no responsibility for the buyer or the seller.

4. The auctioneer reserves the right to reject any or all bids.

5. All horses are sold as is. Right of recourse must be directed to the seller and not to CWHBA or Sale Management.

6. All horses sold will be delivered to the new owner with a halter.

7. A sale by auction is complete when the auctioneer announces its completion by the fall of the hammer or in other customary manner, and until that announcement is made any bidder may retract his bid.

8. Upon the auctioneer declaring the horse as sold, all risk, title, care, and responsibility shall pass to the buyer.

9. Reserve bids are permitted and can be placed with the auction staff by the Seller.

Reserve bids can be made as late as five lots prior to the horse entering the sale ring.

10. CWHBA, Westerner Park, management, employees, and auction staff & volunteers accept no responsibility or liability for injury or damage to persons, horses, or equipment as a result of attending or participating in the auction.

11. Every effort has been made to ensure correctness of this catalogue; however, Sale Management and the auctioneer assume no responsibility for errors or omissions.

Terms of sale are cash and payment in full must be made to the cashier immediately after the sale. Valid personal cheques will be accepted with proper identification (driver’s license and major credit card) and/or a standby financial letter of credit from the buyer’s bank.

GST will be charged on horses sold according to Canadian law.

The Sale Management will withhold registration papers until the buyer’s cheque clears the bank. At such time, all documents will be processed for transfer to the buyer. The seller will pay all transfer fees, according to Canadian law.

Phone and internet bids will be accepted if the following items are provided: • Scan/photograph of driver’s license and major credit card • A signed bidder contract To obtain a phone bidder number, complete our online bidder registration and provide the necessary documentation. To facilitate the necessary paperwork, registration must be completed by Friday, Oct 4, 2019. Horses purchased via phone or internet bids will be held at a central collection point near Red Deer until payment is received in full. Hauling and board at the facility will be at the buyer’s expense.

Should the buyer fail to comply in any respect with all conditions above, the Sale Management may, at its discretion, pursue any remedy available against the defaulting buyer, including, but not limited to, taking possession of the horse(s) and resale of the horse(s) at public auction or by private treaty for account of the defaulter. In such a case, the defaulter shall be liable for any deficit in the account after payment of all costs of maintenance and resale, attorney fees, costs of litigation, and damages available to seller by law.

Bidder Registration To Bid at the Auction you MUST Register with the Sale Office

You will be required to produce a driver’s license or other picture ID and a major credit card. Payment for horses is by cheque or cash only. Credit cards are for ID/credit purposes only and can not be used for payment. All members of your party are required to sign a waiver whether riding or not.

Bidding by Telephone or Online If you are unable to attend the auction you may bid via telephone or through the online system. You must still register as a bidder with the Sale Office and provide copies of your ID and major credit card. Payment for horses is by bank transfer the first business day following the sale. Viewing of the demonstrations and auction will be available live online.

Sale Information Removal of Horses from Site All horses must be removed from the Sale Grounds by noon on Sunday, October 6, 2019. To remove horses from sale barn, the transport agent must have a release form from the sale office and present it to the security gate.

Veterinary Consultations and Pre-Purchase Examinations Every horse offered at the Fall Classic Breeders’ Sale has successfully completed an insurance-equivalent physical examination, including musculoskeletal, eye, respiratory, and heart. In addition, each horse has been presented to the Inspection Committee in hand, and has been evaluated for health, basic soundness, and turnout. The documented results of these examinations are on file in the sale office and available for viewing. Consigned horses have NOT completed a full pre-purchase exam.

Prospective buyers are welcome to have the veterinarian of their choice perform flexion tests or pre-purchase examinations on horses of interest. The sale veterinarian will be available Friday and Saturday by appointment for consultations and pre-purchase examinations of sale horses. Any services beyond x-ray consultations provided by the sale veterinarian are at the expense of the prospective buyer. Flexion tests and Prepurchase examinations must be arranged and discussed with the consignor.

Consignors have provided x-rays for all Prospects Under Saddle and Performance Horses. For all other horses, x-rays are optional and may be on file. X-rays are available for online viewing by a certified veterinarian. Access information can be obtained from the sale office. The sale veterinarian will be available on Friday and Saturday for consultation. All viewings of x-rays with the sale vet require an appointment.

Test Rides Prospective buyers will be permitted to ride Prospects Under Saddle and Performance Horses for tryout IF the prospective buyer has proper riding footwear and an approved safety helmet. In addition, all prospective buyers must register with the sale office and complete a Waiver of Liability before the prospective buyer will be permitted any test rides. Sale Management and consignors reserve the right to refuse tryouts of any horse to any prospective buyer.

Insuring Your Purchase The Sale Commitee has invited a suitable horse insurance agent to be present at the sale to insure your new purchase.

Bought a Horse - Now What?

You placed the successful final bid, the auctioneer called “Sold”, and now you are the proud owner of a new horse. Here are some suggestions to help you through the process: 1. Stay in your seat and wait for one of our volunteers to find you and have you sign an initial sale contract confirming your bidder number and the purchase amount. You will retain a copy of this form to present at the sale office.

2. Come to the sale office to settle your account for your purchase as soon as possible. Payment can be made by cash or cheque. If you are planning to purchase more than one horse, come to the sale office as soon as possible after your final purchase.

3. Make sure you leave the sale office with your new horse’s insurance examination form and a receipt showing payment has been made.

4. If you wish to purchase insurance for your new horse, visit the insurance agent set up near the sale office.

5. Visit the barn and find the seller of your new horse. Discuss your plans for transport and arrange for continuity of care.

6. Arrange to have your horse shipped home. You may wish to contact one of the horse transport companies listed on page 61. If you require temporary stabling in the area to allow you time to arrange for shipping, contact the sale office for assistance.

7. Following the waiting period for clearance of funds through the bank (10 to 21 days), you will be mailed a letter from the sale administrator regarding the transfer of registration papers for your new horse.

The artwork used for the Fall Classic Breeders’ Sale advertising and catalogue cover is offered as the first lot at the sale. The original work is framed and ready for hanging.

Artist: Rebecca Shuttleworth Rebecca Shuttleworth is a young artist from Balzac, Alberta, where she was raised on her family’s farm. Her agricultural upbringing influenced her artwork from a young age and she fell in love with western art.

Rebecca drew on her own from the moment she could hold a pencil, and by the age of 13 she had sold her first painting. She started to become recognized and win art competitions soon after, being nominated for Airdrie’s Qualico Youth Artist award, winning the 2014 Calgary Stampede Grade 12 Western Art Scholarship, and being accepted into the Calgary Stampede’s 2015 Live Western Art Auction. Rebecca started to receive more demand for her artwork and one of her most notable commissions was from Douglas Lake Ranch, Canada’s largest ranch. By 19, she had prints of her artwork travel across North America and all the way to Mexico.

Rebecca’s latest honour was being this year’s Calgary Stampede poster artist.

She is the youngest artist to complete the poster and was chosen over 100 applicants to represent the 2019 Stampede.

Rebecca continues to complete originals and commissions to share with the public so they can see her interpretation of western culture. ~ 18 ~

Sire: CHIPPENDALE is making a name for himself in the small-tour dressage ring and shows all of the ability to become a top Grand Prix horse. A 50% share of Chippendale was sold for 1.5 Mil Euro when he was just a 7-year-old with the eye toward the Olympic games. He was the champion of the 2012 stallion competition and has presented a very uniform group of foals to the KWPN where he was praised for their uphill movement and good self-carriage.

Sire: HERO’S TRIBUTE is a notable G1 thoroughbred racehorse who won over $850,000. His sire, SEA HERO, was the 1993 Kentucky Derby winner. This mare was unable to show due to an injury as a foal but has been a great broodmare.

Sire: CONNAISSEUR has the remarkable distinction of being approved in four countries: Germany (Westfalen), Holland (KWPN), Sweden (ASVH), and Belgium (BWP), and he achieved all of this before his fourth birthday. Sire: NASSAU was the 2005 KWPN Horse of the Year. He earned double bronze at the European championships, silver at the Dutch National Championships, and a Dutch team silver at Aachen. Sire: BOSCH BLUE is an appealing grey stallion by CANTOS keur out of the ster mare PAVONA. His pedigree combines two of the most sought after modern show jumping bloodlines in Holland. CANTOS’ sire CONTENDER is a pillar of the Holsteiner breeding industry. Bosch Blue’s dam’s sire, MR. BLUE, carries one of the highest show jumping indexes within the KWPN. Sire: VALENTINO is in the top 1% of all the German breeding sires. In 2005, he was reserve champion of the Adelsheidsdorf stallion performance test, handily winning the jumping portion and awarded elite status. These predicates indicate that this mare line has not only performed very well in sport but that the offspring of these mares performed very well as jumpers in the Netherlands. What makes Obligeant special is that her dam line is the “Sina” dam line, highly sought after in KWPN pedigrees for consistently producing international show jumpers, including MACKINLEY, MODESTO, EMMERTON and, of course, Indiana’s sire CAVALIER. His sports career was full of pinnacles: 1986 honoured as DLG champion stallion, at the WEG at The Hague in 1994 with his lifelong rider Karin Rehbein he won team gold and in freestyle the bronze medal. This result was repeated in 1997 at the European Championships at Verden with gold in the team and bronze in the individual. In 1998, Donnerhall and Karin Rehbein returned from the WEG at Rome with team gold and an outstanding fourth place in the individual results.

Her daughter UZELLA (Lux Z) was Dutch champion of 3-year-old mares and is also the mother of DUZELLA (Indoctro) who is the dam of the 2017 champion of the KWPN stallion show Jardonnay VDL. Ozella has four offspring competing at the FEI level. Feronia’s brother HURRICANE VDL has also been competing to 1.30m.

Her sire, BALTIC VDL, is proving to be a good sire of sport horses with several 7 and 8-year-olds rising to the FEI level. He was the KWPN testing champing as a 3-year-old and now competes to 1.50m. His daughters have done exceptionally well at mare shows with impressive scores for free jumping.

Sale Graduates Over its 25-year history, the Fall Classic Breeders’ Sale has seen horses sold into every discipline, with many success stories in every arena. The majority have gone to amateur owners and juniors, providing many years of soundness, enjoyment and successes for their riders. A number have gone to professionals in the horse industry including past Olympians from each of the Olympic disciplines. There are many shining stars in the Fall Classic Sale alumni but, to name a few…

ALERO (ARKANSAS x MAJOR WON bred by Charlotte Sanford) sold to Christina Tann of Snohomish, WA as a Dressage 4-year-old. At Alero’s first show (USDF), he scored in the 6’s at Training level ridden by his amateur owner. In 2015, Alero and Christina were Champion Third Level - Adult Amateur; Champion Third Level - Open; and Champion Third Level - Vintage Cup Award in the USDF All Breeds Awards for CWHBA. ULYSSES PR (INDOCTRO x FERRO bred by Jim & Leny Boersma) ing went through how Jump S the sale ring as a 4-yearold and sold to Hans & Katrina van den Bosch of Olds, Alberta. Under the show name Julio, he competed at Spruce Meadows and Rocky Mountain Show Jumping in the 1.30m, ridden by Femke van den Bosch. He was A/O Medium Jumper Reserve Champion in Thermal and Open Jumper champion at the Royal Winter Fair in 2012. With amateur owner, Katrina van den Bosch, he was a champion at Spruce Meadows in 2015, in the ribbons every day, and also competed in the hunter derby at RMSJ and in the 3-bars event at the Fall Classic Sale. Katrina says he retired just a few months ago and was “the best horse we ever bought!”

MJ SAMBA (WHIRLWIND II x FANTAST bred

by MJ Farms) sold as a 3-year-old prospect to Courtney Benton of Olds, Alberta. In the 2019 competition season, Samba has not finished outside the top 3 at any competition. She won the 5-year-old Young Prospects Program (and the 4-year-old program in 2018) in eventing this summer. She is currently showing pre-training and placed 3rd in her first outing at this level with a personal best dressage score. For the provincial leaderboard she is tied for 1st in the Open Entry division and 4th in the Open PreTraining division with only two outings at that level this year. “Samba is so amazing, I have nothing but good things to say about this horse and I’m so thankful to Mara and Jennette for their dedication to their breeding program to bring horses like Samba into the world.”
