Bike Mech Tech My Dream From as far back as I can remember I have been attracted to “mechanical things”.

This evolved to push bikes. My first “real bike” was a Mark 2 Raleigh Chopper. I loved adjusting and tweaking my bike. All my friends would give me their bikes to adjust and “fix”. Before I knew it, I was repairing most of the bikes in the village!

I then started buying broken bikes and parts.

I would make one bike out of two or three “donor bikes”. Selling them in the local paper.

When potential buyers came to my house they didn’t expect to be dealing with a 13 year old! I continued this for a few years and sold dozens of bikes. I began my apprenticeship in 1982 as an HGV mechanic at the age of 17. I loved every minute of every day. They were the best years

During that time I have held foreman, supervisor and workshop manager positions.

I have always been a cyclist and love bikes. Over the last few months I have taken up road cycling again, my wife has decided to join me. I hope my 8 year old son will follow suit too. I have a large workshop where I repair cars and motorcycles. I have a bench mounted pillar drill, a floor mounted pillar drill and a 4.5 inch Boxford lathe with a screw cutting gearbox, which allows me to carry out light engineering tasks. I have amassed 35 years worth of hand tools and equipment.

The decision was made to invest in “bike specific tools” and start servicing and repairing bicycles.

I have always applied a QUALITY and not a QUANTITY philosophy. I’d much rather do 5 jobs well instead of 10 jobs half! This inbuilt philosophy will be applied to YOUR bike. If I can help someone to get their bike back on the road, or get their daily commute reliable, or build your child’s next bike for Christmas, I will be more than pleased.

I want to return to the days I still remember, when “I loved every minute of every day”.

Ambitious £17m plans for new urban quarter Ambitious plans to create jobs and transform Falkirk’s economic future in a new £17million environmentally-friendly urban quarter have been released.

The proposed £17m package of infrastructure works – released by Falkirk Council Development Services team under its multimillion Tax Incremental Finance (TIF) initiative -- aims to stimulate a mix of business, learning and leisure development over 376 acres to regenerate the gateway entrance into Falkirk and create better connections between the town centre, Grangemouth and the rest of Scotland’s Central Belt.

The area takes in sites that encompass the Gateway, Falkirk Community Stadium, land earmarked for the new £70m Forth Valley College campus and the home of the iconic Kelpies; Helix Park, recognising that, together, there is potential for major job creation and place making in this vicinity.

Leader of Falkirk Council, Councillor Craig Martin, said: “These exciting plans for a new sustainable urban quarter signal another step in the transformation of Falkirk’s economic fortunes. The Gateway is a prime site to attract jobs, investment and development for our area.

“With the huge and growing appeal of the Kelpies, the Community Stadium facility and the forthcoming College campus there’s huge investment potential for developers across tourism, business and leisure. Through the Falkirk Tax Incremental Finance initiative, we have the lever to prepare the site for development and create the connections needed to support expected traffic flow and the footfall.”

These exciting plans for a new sustainable urban quarter signal another step in the transformation of Falkirk’s economic fortunes.

One additional element of infrastructure works is an eye-catching feature to create the UK’s first circular elevated pedestrian and cycle crossing, which will support the upgrade of the road network connecting each of the Gateway sites.

Another feature is the development of waterways along landscaped pedestrian pathways that will add character to the area whilst providing a sustainable urban drainage.

Forth Valley College Makes STEM Work Forth Valley College showcased the wide range of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) careers available to young people across Forth Valley with their first ever ‘Making STEM Work’ Conference.

Over 100 delegates – including school pupils, teachers and current Forth Valley College students – attended the College’s Falkirk Campus recently.

They attended a range of exciting workshops delivered by the College’s own teaching departments, Dogfi.sh Mobile, Diageo, Charles River, Historic Environment Scotland, Scottish Power Energy Networks, Equate Scotland, and Skills Development Scotland.

Delegates also enjoyed inspirational keynote speeches from Professor Medhat, CEO of the STEM Foundation and educationalist ‘the real’ David Cameron.

This marked the College’s reaccreditation of STEM Assured Status - an industry led quality mark awarded by the STEM Foundation - and also offered an opportunity to explore new partnership initiatives related to STEM. If they’re doing work for you on any gas boiler, cooker, fire then ask to see their Gas Safe Register Card. Take time to check it – It will list what types of gas appliances they’re authorised to work on and also the expiry date. Please ask to see this card every time you use a gas engineer.
