Who am I?

For many, t hi s can be l i fe' s defi ni ng quest i on and seeki ng i t s answer i s t he ul t i mat e

quest . For me, part of t hi s quest i on' s beaut y i s si mpl e and rat her obvi ous, woven i nt o i t s i nherent i ndi vi dual i st i c nat ure: everyone i s uni que so everyone' s answer wi l l be uni que.

More i nt erest i ng t o me, t hough, i s t hat how everyone responds and react s t o t hi s quest i on i s j ust as uni que. On t he ext reme ends, some are abl e t o answer t hi s quest i on about t hemsel ves confi dent l y, whi l e ot hers nearl y experi ence anxi et y- i nduced paral ysi s j ust t hi nki ng about i t .

And more begui l i ng i s t hat each i ndi vi dual mi ght answer t hi s quest i on di fferent l y for t hemsel ves at any gi ven poi nt i n t i me - whet her across t he years or wi t hi n t he same day. When st eppi ng back and recogni zi ng t hi s, t he expl orat i on of t he quest i on becomes more i mport ant t han t he answer. . . and i n many ways, i t i s t he answer. For me (and I suspect for most peopl e), " Who am I ?" i s unanswerabl e i n a fi ni t e sense, and t hi s pi ece of musi c doesn' t set out t o answer t he quest i on but rat her cel ebrat e t he beaut y embedded wi t hi n i t s pursui t .

Thi s work was wri t t en wi t h t he i nt ent i on of a j oi nt expl orat i on and col l aborat i on bet ween performers. There are a number of ' X' t i me si gnat ure sect i ons whi ch can si mpl y be i nt erpret ed as " free" . Revi ewi ng t he pri nt ed pi ano part wi l l provi de j ust one i nt erpret at i on of how each part mi ght l i ne up wi t h one anot her, and t he performers are encouraged t o t rul y approach t he musi c freel y i n every manner. Even out si de of t hese " free" sect i ons, performers shoul d experi ment and make t he musi c (and perhaps even each performance) t hei r own. Thi s may i ncl ude al t erat i ons t o t empo, dynami cs, and phrasi ng, or i t may i ncl ude more subst ant i al embel l i shment s.
