They style of Brutalism gained popularity from 1950 to 1970. Brutalism is characterise by the use of heavy concrete and other material such as glass and metal. These material are often left rough and unfinished.

The philosophy of Brutalism focuses on creating simple, honest and functional architecture. Hence the materials use in brutalist architecture are often left raw and the building constructed from modular element to form a monolithic form.

STYLE In contrast to Brutalism, Art nouveau is an architectural style that favors ornamentation. It’s ornamentation is characterised by long, sinuous and organic lines. The ornamentation often taken the form of flower stalks and buds, Vine tendrils, insect wings and other delicate natural objects.

Art nouveau was a deliberate attempt to create a new style, which is unique and different from the other style in the past.

The DOPE Vector

This week focuses exploring the effect of mixing images of canonical brutalist and art nouveau architecture with pop culture imageries of video games, fashions, celebrities, animes, etc. and investigating the how the original images of architecture is redefined through this process. This bring forth the question of how the idea of personal taste affects establish architectural ideas.` These images are created by using deep dream generator, a machine learning algorithm that transfer the style of one image onto another.

The second week investigate how reproduction produced from machine learning changes and twist the original architecture. These reproduction are not perfect and often has anomalies in area where the machine has to fill in areas of missing information. These obscure anomalies in the images produced are uncanny moment, where new emergence are found.

The process involves using the technique of machine hallucination where architecture images is combine with noise and machine reproduction where architectures images is combine with diagram of the architecture.

Data Bias

Data bias is the tendencies for the machine learning algorithm to lean towards a particular style. In this week the Pix2Pix algorithm (turn line art into architecture) and CycleGAN algorithm (transfer one architecture style into the other and vice versa) was used. The top half of the images on the following pages are pix2pix while the bottom half are cycleGAN images. Pix2pix algorithm tend to turn input images into brutalist architecture by overlaying them with grey concrete texture. Likewise. CycleGAN adds ornamentation to images of brutalist architecture and removes ornament from images of Art nouveau architecture.

The final project is an exploration of how architectural meaning or truth is changed through various reproduction techniques and ‘new meaning’ is analyses the 3D model of these reproduction images. This idea is explore through the immersive images, creating a resort where the modules (suite) that made up each room of the high rise buildings in the resort is a copy of one or more canonical brutalist/ art nouveau architecture. The resort is analogous to urban slums, which was taken from r/ urbanhell.

The narrative detailed the experience of the resort from the perspective of a young man and speaks to this idea of urban hell as well. It serves as a example of the potential of machine learning and as a precaution against the misused of this technology in architecture.

FINAL PROJECT The process involves in creating this narrative immersive images involves creating three suite, one club house, a master plan and an elevation grid to organise the suite into. The following two pages demonstrate the process of creating these suites and club house and the two pages after that showcases the process of creating the master plan and club house.

Each of the suite and the club house explores a different reproduction techniques. From the top down, they explore machine hallucination, reproduction, and multi-style transfer techniques.

The master plan and elevation grid work together to dictate how the suites are laid out. The foot print of the master plan is extracted from hallucination of satellite image of resort in palm spring and the elevation grid is extracted machine reproduction images Kowloon city’s elevation.

We have two sets of styles: Art Deco and German expressionism. Art Deco is enhanced in the way adapting colours, vertical and horizontal movements, patterns, and repetitive structure to create a system that’s luxurious fulfilled with colours.

German expressionism is the original expressionism that’s created adapting the designer’s emotion into forms and space. So compare to Art Deco’s delicate space, this style is more in a mass with a more freeform with big vivid curve, the colour is much more simpler as well.

Unexpected change of form to create many voids that can be identified as a space. There’s an uncanny view happening here, where the façades, balconies and the fluid curvilinear shape that grow toward a same direction construct a fake image that this image can be a rendering of a building that’s actually constructed.

Algorithm transform the green in the original image in an interesting way, The green is split and developed mainly on the right side and create an illusion of green space and plants that help convincing people not to doubt the authenticity of this architectural space.

Data Bias

In this chapter we experienced with pix-2-pix and cycleGan as well as Char-rnn to further discover machine learning with some basic knowledge of coding. We want to discover the pattern that drives machine’s decision between lines and textures.

As well as building a strong collection of different styles as models to train machine to explore the possibilities we can apply to our projects.

Emergent qualities filled in with the process of machine learning. Colours adapted into the texture frame of the original image and create new colour layout.

The sets of colours recreate the structure of this facade and add more repetitive pattern to the horizontal and vertical trend.

The original building section is given a new style. Machine learns the colour palette and apply it more in the detail areas and add more complexity to the picture. -

FINAL PROJECT

In this chapter we discuss about fake multi identities and the definition of post-truth and fake architecture expressed in our project base on the style collection of art deco and German expressionism.

How does human as well as architecture change to adapt to the rapid developing society and what kind of identity represent us and what kind of space represent itself in this world?

Our project is aligned with echo chamber with the process of collect data-train-style transfer-model-back to fake thematic dataset in adapting fake preferences into space, and produce fake architecture to break the normal, original pure form and to combine with other kind of identity.

In the process we use a distilled data set along with

the style of art deco to distort the pure form of German expressionism with using our four-taste profiles in order to add a more personal identity of the fake architecture outcome to realise an architecture tailored to personal preferences.

Our suites enhance 4 differentiated style and identities generated by fake truth dataset with our fake character Arilyan.

The Dope Vector

The Dope Vector explores the potential of fake architecture through a shift in stylistic agency and is the initial experimentation with style transfer methodology.

A ‘taste profile’ comprised of pop culture ‘content’ imagery relating to a designed virtual celebrity is fused with images of architecture style through the web app Deep Dream Generator. This is a process of heavy iteration, exploring which parameters and images are most successful in the style transfer process. We found that content images with an inherent hierarchy and order worked best with style images that bore resemblance to these existing qualities.

This thematic builds on the research completed in The Dope Vector, investigating the potential of fake architecture through anomalous conditions in machine generated copies. Like The Dope Vector, this thematic is a period of heavy iteration, exploring which parameters and images would produce ‘uncanny’ replicas of assigned architectural precedents. DisOrder also explores the process of collaboration through the amalgamation of different canonical styles using neural style transfer.

Data Bias

Data Bias explores the implications and possibilities of designing with image data through AI Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). Training datasets are built on top of the accrued images from the first two thematics, using image scraping programs to pull large volumes of data. CycleGAN further investigates the process of collaboration through the introduction of ‘alien data,’ which infiltrates and reconfigures images of architecture into uncanny machine generated fakes.

The profiling of architectural style creates an insular environment for the discussion of design. The result is a style echo chamber, a regurgitation of solutions and aesthetics that breed stagnation and overshadow innovation.

This project criticises this condition and proposes the introduction of data and styles that exist outside of the Western canon as a potential solution, using machine learning methodology to simulate the hybridisation of canonical architecture with ‘alien’ styles.

Imaginative, inspiring, wonderful are just a few words to describe Antoni Gaudí’s designs. In the city that showcases most of his work, Barcelona is credited with a unique style of architecture. A Spanish architect from Catalan, Antoni Gaudí’s style can only be described as unique and very distinctive.

The oriental arts may have inspired him however it was the Gothic revival that most influenced him. He believed that Gothic art was imperfect and he sought to perfect this half resolved style. Following this, he moved towards Modernism that applied an artistic work to produce an extreme ornamental style. His works cannot be boxed into one design, but are a mixture of styles with an inspiration from nature around him for example cones, reeds, bones, rushes, etc.

This mix of styles and use of materials lead to Gaudí adapting nature into architectural forms, pushing the boundaries of geometry and engineering thus giving

MIESIAN-STYLE

Miesian architecture reflects the rationalist tendencies expressed in Mies van der Rohe’s work with his motto of “less is more.” The style is reflected in two subtypes: multi-story high-rise buildings, and small-scale commercial and residential structures. While it was always Mies’ intent that his approach and vocabulary be put to wider use, the most successful examples came from large firms staffed with devoted and knowledgeable designers, some former pupils others employees from his firm who branched off on their own. Generally examples here in the Pacific Northwest tend to be simplified versions of Mies’s designs, many just borrowing elements of the style to capture a mood or feeling.

In most Miesian buildings the rigid grid is articulated with wood, brick or concrete, however, here in the Pacific Northwest, a surprising number of exposed steel examples can be found. Between these members are large uninterrupted plates of glass typically spanning

him a position in the history of architecture. His work in art is very expressive, extravagant and has a unique form. For me, what stands out the most about his work that makes it recognisable, is the defying use of curves and shapes not normally associated with building design in addition to the vivid use of colour.

Some examples pull the exterior wall back from the grid in order to leave an open walkway or floating frame. Other structures bend more towards the design of Mies’s Barcelona Pavilion utilizing large expanses of flat wall planes, often articulated in brick or stone, which form walls that extend outward and upward from the main body of the structure.

The Dope Vector

We trying to find some non-architecture pictures, such as street fashion shoes, animation characters and cyberpunk sense, to generate with a piece of Gaudi’s style architecture. In this process, some elements of the Gaudi’s architectural style are transformed into content images. Through the generator, these elements are more or less changed, and then merged with the content image to form some interesting uncanny moments.

Dis-Order

In this task, we tried to capture some plans, elevations and sections from Gaudi. And try to trace the architectural elements on these drawings, such as windows, pillars, doors, etc. Using these drawn lines and original images to generate new images, this process may change the spatial distribution and structure of the original images, and generate some uncanny moments.

In this process, we tried to mix the architectural styles of Mies and Gaudi, fusing the minimalist architecture of Mies with the complex classical architecture of Gaudi, looking for a combination of aesthetics of them .
