The current site, a central parking plaza in the heart of Byward Market, is set to be a destination attraction in the upcoming years as proposed by the City of Ottawa. This proposal aims to use a state-of-the-art construction technique, the CLT (cross-laminated timber), to construct a cinematheque as well as become the new location for the Ottawa School of Art.

Vanier HUB is an innititive by the vanier community center that currently focuses on a mix of activities in the summer for children, so as to let Parents in the locale have a place to have a social place other than a school to let their children engage in activities.

New Vanier HUB Proposal site
The real world is difficult and Vanier has been a disadvantaged neighbourhood. The area has low income earning populations and immigrant population.
With a proposed constraint budget of approximately 25K- 30K CAD, we were given a site, a parking lot next to the community center to develop as a community gathering/ event space.

An existing arena, from the cenntenial building stock of Ottawa is renovated to include newer programs within the same footprint while adding an extra half of the square footage of the already exiting building. This was done by adding an external structure to empty space within the lobby space to create more visual space inside the space which was congested before. The building maintains the aesthetic of the old brewer park arena while adding more space and upto date programs.

The project was designed to accomodate two programs, a living space for the owners and a soup kitchen for neighbourhood patrons. There is an emphasis on creating a safe space for both the owners and the patrons of the space by carefully seperating the two spaces while also creating a connection between the private and the public.
Starting with the top, there are the living spaces, with a floor to ceiling skylight for letting light pass through between all the floors. The light pours down on the sitting area for patrons below. There are recessed spaces, inspired by my own pashtun culture of sitting down and eating together.
The basement, with a seperate entrance acts as a place for bathing and storage for patrons of the city who have been disadvantaged. This creates a place of dignity and respect before joining the common space on the ground floor.

FRONT ELEVATION 1:50 EAST ELEVATION 1:50 WEST SECTION 1:50Core ideas of design are emphisized in these two partis. The left one shows the flow of light coming from the top, to the the bottom, in the common area.
The right parti shows the choice of pattern used for the exterior, which was a play on the appearance of the building and its internal function. The facade is truly a facade in the sense that it is a visual illusion.
The space inside is protected by the visual illusion by having places that open,, black panels on the exterior, and places that are permanently closed of white panels. This is primarily to ensure privacy of the residents above.
This document set was created in collaboration for a by law approval project in Ottawa for a 3 storey multi residential building.
The HVAC system is designed independently and follows code guidelines and also designed for healhty flow of air thoughout the building including spaces such as the basement where occupants are susceptible to health issues with breathing polluted air.
This document set was created in collaboration for a typical curtain wall detailing for a part of a historic building extension. The requirements were completed with focus on the designing of a reliable, resilient and energy efficeint curtain wall with respect to the cold climate of Ottawa.
