His notable works include those of the tranquil scenes of the East Coast villages; studies of the human form in the Nude Series (2005); batik prints such as Kelantanese (1968) and Gadis (1968); as well as his pre-London paintings from the 1950’s, including Bachok (1957) and Kuala Besut (1955). Khalil was also known to use sketches as a base of his works and this has resulted in a large number of ink on paper pieces found in his sketchbooks. Khalil’s first solo exhibition was held at the Samat Art Gallery in 1970. This was followed by many more exhibitions, including in Indonesia, Singapore, Switzerland, and Australia. His skill in the various mediums such as acrylic, oil, watercolour, and ink, was first viewed as a whole during his retrospective show, A Continued Dialogue, at PETRONAS Gallery in 2004. His artworks have been held in many private and public collections, such as in Hilton Kuala Lumpur, Bank Negara, Singapore Art Museum, Fukuoka Museum of Art in Japan, and Victoria Gallery in Melbourne, Australia. Chuah Seow Keng is recognised as one of Malaysia’s leading artists and is known for his work on batik (a traditional fabric closely associated with Malaysian culture) and watercolour paintings. Chuah was awarded a scholarship to study at the Suddeutsche Kunststoff-Zentrum, Wurzburg, Germany in 1968 specialising in fiberglass sculptures. Chuah was first exposed to the art of batik painting by this father Dato’ Chuah Thean Teng, The Father of Batik Painting, who pioneered batik art in Malaysia. In recognition of his artistic talents, two of Chuah’s batik paintings, ‘Rural Life’ and ‘Fish’, were selected by the United Nations International Children’s Funds (UNICEF) for their greeting cards in 1988, and in 1989, Chuah was awarded the Certificate of Excellence for Outstanding Achievement at the Artitudes 7 th International Art Competition, New York, United States.

Nguyen Ba Tuan graduated from Hanoi City Stage and Screen University at the Faculty of Fine Arts. Ba Tuan’s main source of inspiration is the peaceful village landscape of Vietnam. The familiar images of the rice fields, the boat, the water docks, the thatched roof, the bamboo groves are all retained in his memory, which then recreates on his canvas in various warm and cool colour palettes.Ba Tuan continues to be inspired by the majesty and mystery of nature. He expresses the simplicity and purity of landscape using rich colour and conventional space to accentuate the form and beauty of the landscape. His work is mostly monochromatic; yellow, red, blue, white or grey tones, with textures and a touch of a different colour to create a contrast that brings all his sceneries to life.Ba Tuan used to paint freely, but in recent years he completely switched to painting the Northern Delta landscape, where he was born and raised.

“The tumultuous childhood, jokes and poverty of a rural area along the Red River–Ha Nam, have given me memories of happiness and sadness. Along with friends of the same age bathing, chasing, fishing, kicking a football, these things have instilled in my work a peaceful, romantic, melancholic atmosphere of the countryside” – Nguyen Ba Tuan

The subjects of earth, light, wind and water based landscapes have always been his trademark. Ever the magician who weaves magic on his canvas, Ismail Latiff features a harmonious blend of colours, creating a motion-like masterpiece on canvas. This is the type of scene that one encounters only in dreams or in the figments of the imagination, but very difficult to put into words and even tougher to revisualise. There’s much to unfold with Ismail’s works but that’s the beauty of it. The artists treats his viewers to a visual orchestra, transporting them to an enigmatic and mythical realm.

View from the Verandah, 1993 Batik 75 x 113 cm Signed and dated lower right

MYR 15,000 - 25,000 USD 3,600 - 6,000 Celebrated Malaysian artist Fatimah Chik trained at the MARA School of Art and Design as a textile designer and was born in 1947 in Pontian, Johor. She began experimenting in batik designs from the mid 1970’s and it was then when she started dabbling in infusing varied motifs into her artworks, birthing a style that was entirely her own. Fatimah Chik’s coveted and brilliant Nusantara Series are highly ornate, structured with its luxurious texture and at most times, the way it is created – blocks, waxing, hand painting, dyeing to add more value to it. The artist has wonderfully revolutionised and brought batik to greater heights by co-mixing the old-style of crafting symbolic batik with new art forms to fit into the category of contemporary fine art. Her creations break the barriers between the physical, religious and racial differences among people. Throughout her artistic career, Fatimah maintained her role as an educator at the Mara Institute of Technology and later at the Malaysian Institute of Art. Fatimah is venerated in the Malaysian art and fashion scene and her expertise is valued as a judge at competitions such as the Piala Seri Batik Design Competition in 2015. Not long after graduation, she married her former art history professor, Redza Piyadasa. Piyadasa, who died in 2007, was a renowned artist, art critic and educator who is credited with initiating the debate on the national artistic identity of Malaysia.

MYR 26,000 - 40,000 USD 6,210 - 9,560

Dato’ Mohamed Hoessein Enas, also regarded as the ‘Father of Portraits’. is one of the earliest generations of Malaysian artists. Born in 1924 in Bogor in Java, he migrated to Malaysia in 1947 to escape the aftermath of the Indonesian Revolution. The artist is famed for his European-style realistic paintings. A member of the Fellow Royal Society of Arts, Hossein’s work spanned across many mediums and his reputation as a portrait artist was sealed as the best in the art scene, particularly those of the Malaysian royalty. Hoessein Enas’ works exude a certain brilliance in capturing still life and exuding the elegance evidently projected. He was the founder of the Majlis Kesenian Melayu which eventually became the Angkatan Pelukis Semenanjung, dedicated in producing artworks of the Malay tradition. He was also a member of the the Board of Trustees and the former head of Design and Staging Services of the national RTM (Radio dan Televisyen Malaysia). He was then appointed as the Royal Portrait Painter by His Royal Highness the Sultan of Selangor in 1990. Hoessein Enas passed away in 1995 and left behind a legacy of heritage and artwork in the royal halls and walls which are irreplaceable. There is some sense of culture translated to all of Hoessein’s portraits, whether it’s in the actions of his subject, their clothes or their livelihood. This work is no different, it is the epitome of elegance and grace. A demure Malay lady dressed to the nines in her traditional attire, a flower adorning her big hair speaks of the era. The subject is painted beautifully, depicting her alluring nature — big glistening eyes and full, plump lips and rosy cheeks.

Awang Damit hails from the second generation of abstract expressionists in Malaysian modern art. As a generation including artists such as Yusof Ghani, they create artworks in a broadly expressionistic style and expanded the subject matter of their paintings from landscapes and nature to include current cultural, social and religious issues. As one of the most recoginsed expressionists in Malaysia, he has been lauded for his series EOC, Marista, Iraga, Payarama and New Payarama . Compositionally complex, and often ridden with symbolist elements, most of the masterpieces illustrate Awang Damit’s sensitivity to colour and form, and his skill fragmented shapes and patterns influenced by his highly developed aesthetics. According to Professor Dr. Muliyadi Mahamood, ,”Awang sees, hears, touches, feels, and smells his subject and the world around him. He incorporates all these sensory perceptions into his paintings”.

133 JACK TING b. Sarawak, 1968

Ceremonies, 1997 Mixed media on canvas 173 x 228 cm Signed and dated lower left

MYR 38,000 - 45,000 USD 9,120 - 10,800 Sarawakian artist Jack Ting Mui Chii, born in 1968 in Sibu, is famed for his abstract paintings. The artist was drawn to drawing and painting from a very young age. Jack Ting graduated from the Kuala Lumpur College of Art with a Diploma of Fine Arts in 1992 and trained with Professor Tetsuya Noda in his print workshops. He is skilled in acrylic, oil, watercolour and etching, most of his abstract work centre around his culture and his hometown. Since his graduation, the abstract artist has won several awards in the 1990s, as well as multiple solo exhibitions which include Ceremonies at Art Salon, Kuala Lumpur in 1998 and Drifted Glimpses at The Gallery @ Star Hill, Kuala Lumpur in 2008. He is a member of the Malaysian Watercolour Organisation, Malaysian Artist Association and Federation of Malaysian Artist, Malaysia. True art is a reflection of an artist’s imagination and perception. Such is the case with Jack Ting’s art pieces and ‘Ceremonies, 1997’. With a deluge of energetic, robust and bold colours, Jack decorates the canvas with complete abandon, letting his imagination run free, allowing it to guide him as his hands work the brush strokes. It is a celebration indeed, embodied by the movement, gush of energy and subsequent gentleness that he perfects this artwork. Upon further inspection, the painting reveals various underlying motifs and images almost embedded into the piece such as masks, village houses, feathers adorned by indigenous to name a few. One can deduce that this work is inspired by his origin and culture in Sarawak. This work is special not only for its aesthetic, value and meaning it holds, but also because it was documented as the cover of his solo exhibition book in Art Salon, 1997.
