Hi there Friends of Fairways, It is May already; can you believe it! I would like to thank everyone who attended the Pancake Breakfast on April 6 at the Masters. It was a fantastic morning with good food and a big turnout! A big shout out to all the volunteers who made this event a great one, so THANK YOU!
I’d also like to thank all who stayed after breakfast and participated in MetroHealth’s Karaoke and Sock Hop. It was a very fun time and I enjoyed meeting new people in the Fairways! Looking forward to our next event, a Pool Party on May 25 at the Masters Pool from 1-4 pm! Stay tuned for June, July, and August!!
The FHAOI Board has approved its first two Building Community Grants to the Bocce Group led by Gary Cessna and the Golf Groups led by Jim Wood. The golf proposal came from the various golf leagues and groups. The FHAOI Board will continue to review existing applications and we will also accept new proposals. The Board has allotted $10,000 toward grants.
The Bocce Project will replace existing scoreboards with larger ones, new sand for the courts, brooms, picnic tables, and equipment. Currently, over 100 residents play Bocce ball. Gary said they would eventually like to get better lighting so games can be played in the evening on warmer days.
The Golf Project is focused on refurbishing the Golf Gazebo. They will all work together under the leadership of Jim Dunham. The project will include pressure washing, sanding, scraping and repainting, replacing the lighting, updating the cabinet door hinges, refurbishing the corkboard and updating the flowers and mulch around the Gazebo.
The FHAOI Board wants to thank these two groups for submitting these proposals for approval. As these projects get started and move to completion, we will cover the progress in the EAGLE newspaper.
We are still accepting proposals and you can contact Mark Kornmann or Connie Fasano. If you have submitted an application, it will be considered by the Board.

“Our clubs and groups are in full swing, and the FHAOI Fall Ball Golf tournament registration sheets are available for the November 9, 2024, tournament.”
It’s an exciting time in the Fairways Community. We are seeing people coming together to make Fairways a better place. We have seen upgrades to the Greenbrier building and pool, the Golf Cart Paths and carts, the Masters sound system, projector and screen, and several new homes have been added to the community. Our clubs and groups are in full swing, and the FHAOI Fall Ball Golf tournament registration sheets are available for the November 9, 2024, tournament.
While we have seen these upgrades happen in the community, we also have some real challenges at Fairways. The water bills for February came out and residents were allotted 2,900 gallons-less than the 3,000 gallons outlined in the prospectus. For the past year, HTA has
knowingly violated the prospectus when it comes to allotted water.
This past month, HTA started distributing pool wristbands. The idea behind the wristbands was to help residents identify people in the pool and reduce the number of confrontations at the pools. We appreciate the wristbands, but the execution of these wristbands has left all of us scratching our heads. There is no plan for enforcement and no real plan when residents have guests. The answer that has been given is that someone in the group should have a wristband. This does not help pool-goers know if others are residents.
These mixed messages from HTA are common and lead to real frustration in the community. I have heard from many new residents who characterize their experience as one of bait and switch. They are promised things when they are purchasing in the community and once they are here, they have found the customer service from HTA lacking. Some of the residents who bought new homes have had difficulty resolving issues because HTA blames them on third parties
The 10-week winter tournament concluded on March 24 with the playoffs. Eight teams played during the week. The championship game was between Paul Montoney and Gene Palermo versus Keith Reinhagen and Rich Ducharme. Paul and Gene won the match in three games with a final score in the third game of 15 to 13.
A large crowd watched and cheered the players. We had some large crowds watching the matches this year, weather permitting. This was a cold and wet winter with a lot of sickness that made playing difficult.
I want to thank all 46 teams who played this year and special thanks to the substitutes who volunteered – Kevin Keplinger, Sandy Dennis, Joann Estabrook, Tammy Ferrara and Mary Priolo. We also had several new players step up to fill teams losing players due to health issues – Jeff Bennett, Chris Korkis, John Jennings and Bobby and Maureen Solomon, all came through to fill those teams. Best wishes to all for a great summer. Sign up sheets will be posted in December for the 2025 Annual Winter Tournament.
rather than taking the lead and walking the resident through to resolution.
I encourage HTA to take a hard look at their customer service and how they can better aid residents to make Fairways a place we all love.
I would also encourage residents to avoid the temptation to take the HTA frustrations out on other residents. Recently, resident Marcie Reins spoke to me about an experience she had at her local League of Women Voters and shared with me information from the Peace and Justice Institute called “Principles for How We Treat Each Other.”
It is intended to create a practice of respect and community building and the principles are accountability, listening deeply, asking honest and open questions, giving space for unpopular answers, respecting silence, suspending judgment, speaking your truth, and when things get difficult - turn to wonder.
Think about that-in the midst of difficult times, we are asked to wonder-what could it be, what can we be, and how can we get there together. Thanks, Marcie, for sharing.

Dear Editor:
I have lived here in Fairways for 16 years. While out walking, I pick up cigarette butts that are strewn across the roads. I ask that all who smoke cigarettes try to remember that this world of ours is NOT an ashtray. Cigarette butts are not biodegradable!! Plus, if the weather is dry a butt that is still lit could start fires.

I also have a problem with the opening of the gate going into the Greenbrier pool area. Access to the pool from the north side gate is on the outside with no way to easily open from the inside of the pool. I have personally watched others have the same issue. I hope something can be done to fix the gate and make it easier for everyone.

Here we are again. Busy as usual. The weather is getting nicer, and organizations are going out on mission trips. In late February a donation of 4 Baby Blankets and 8 pairs of shoes donated to the Faith Assembly group going to Guatemala. Next the Cancer Center in Winter Park received 7 Seat Belt Protectors. Finally a donation of 6 Baby Blankets, 4 Packages of girl’s undies, 6 Plastic bowls, Pencils, Sharpeners, Colored Pencils, Dish Towels, 2 pair of shoes, and assorted Toys went to the Faith Assembly group going to Bangladesh.
We are so happy to welcome a new member of our sewing group Teresa O’Neil. Thank you for joining us.
The winter season is winding down and we will be saying goodbye to our Snowbirds Jeanne Cafrio and Bonita Balters. Safe travels and see you next winter.
Nothing like spring to show us the beautiful world God has made for us! In May the Fairways Christian Women’s Connection has two different Bible studies and a fun “out to lunch.” On Thursday, May 2nd and 16th, the ladies are meeting at the Greenbrier at 6:30 pm to read and discuss chapters 5 and 6 in Ephesians.
Jo Lynn Haussmann will be continuing David Jeremiah’s book, “The Great Disappearance: 31 Ways to be Rapture Ready.” This month’s two topics are “Salvation in the Tribulation” and “At Any Moment.” Meet at her house at 2 pm on
Thursday, May 9th and 23rd. Jo Lynn’s address is 14721 Firestone.
The ladies are also going out to lunch at TGI Friday’s on Tuesday, May 21st at noon. Address is 625 N. Alafaya Trail. Meet at the Masters at 11:30 am for carpooling.
The homeless in our area definitely need help, so we are partnering with the Samaritan’s Resource Center at Dean Rd and Colonial. In May we are collecting bottled water and emergency rain ponchos. Can you imagine only having one bottle of water per day? The center serves about 80 homeless each day, so their supply dwindles very quickly. Also, with the rainy season approaching, ponchos are a necessity for those living outdoors. Dropoff box is at 14349 Augusta Road.

Their current partnership with Orange County Animal Services allows them to perform low-cost spaying and neutering at their new Alafaya Clinic. Vaccines as well as heartworm testing and prevention will be available for patients at an additional cost. All pricing is clearly stated on their website at petallianceorlando.org and you can call them at 407-351-7722.
The clinic was implemented to address a problem plaguing Orange County for decades – pet overpopulation. Each year, Animal Services, the county’s only open admission shelter receives approximately 18,000 homeless pets. While the shelter makes every effort to secure a live release for these pets, due to the sheer volume that is not always possible. Accessibility of spay and neuter services will be key in helping to curb this problem and is a step forward for animal welfare in Orange County.
The clinic also focuses on the community cat initiative of trap, neuter return by spaying and neutering cats in the community and returning them to their homes.

As the temperatures rise, we loom ever closer to Hurricane Season which officially opens June 1. The 2024 hurricane season will likely be one of the most active on record. They are predicting 24 named storms, and 11 hurricanes are forecast. Hometown can provide each resident with a Hurricane Preparedness information packet. This information packet has helpful tips for evacuation and preparation. Come to the office and pick up this list of helpful hints and safety measures. Let’s be safe out there. We have completed some much-needed cart path repair on the golf course. We have installed new cart paths on #14 through #18. We will continue to make improvements in the coming years.
The Fairways summer calendar of events will be packed with fun. Hometown’s monthly wine and cheese is a Cinco de Mayo theme this month. Come out and join the fun on May 5 in the Masters Clubhouse. Hometown will host a Memorial Day indoor picnic and tribute to our veterans on May 24. Mark this on your calendar and help us honor the U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Thank you to those residents who are out working around their homes freshening up the landscape and planting flowers. It looks beautiful.

Men’s Golf League member Terry Kouba and League President Jim Wood on behalf of Men’s League; Woman’s League; Wednesday Scramble League and Fran Bernier League applied for a Building Community Grant sponsored by FHAOI. We are pleased to announce that this grant application has been awarded for an upgrade of the golf gazebo.
The gazebo located next to the golf pro shop is used by various golf associations. The gazebo is in need of an upgrade for lighting, painting, power washing, and bulletin board work. Jim Dunham with Classic Roofing is assisting with this upgrade. A majority of the work will be done by volunteers from the 4 leagues mentioned above.
We also say thank you to Priscilla from HTA and Christian from the Golf Pro Shop for their input on this project. And a special thanks to Priscilla for having the gazebo power washed in advance of our planned renovation.
Ican’t believe we’re in the month of May already. Hometown has two events planned for May.
May 5 is a Cinco de Mayo themed Wine & Cheese from 6-8 pm. Please feel free to bring a bottle of your favorite wine to share and snacks if you like. On Friday, May 24 Hometown is going to host an indoor picnic at the Masters in honor and memory of the veterans whom we have lost here at Fairways this past year. And of course, this always includes all our veterans who we have lost. Tickets for the picnic will be available on a firstcome-first-serve basis (and includes everyone) at the Masters on Monday, May 6 from 5-6 pm.

Memorial Day is upon us. Once a year we observe one day to remember, honor and pay our respects to those members who died in active duty military service. Traditionally observed on May 30 but now officially observed on the last Monday in May. Also called Decoration Day. On Monday May 27th, the Fairways Veterans Group will be holding a “Memorial Day Remembrance” at the Fairways Veterans Memorial adjacent to the Masters Clubhouse. It will begin at 10:00am. We will remember those veteran residents that have passed away. We will also be placing various bricks that residents have purchased in support of the “Bricks Honoring Our Veterans” fundraising campaign. We invite all residents to attend in honoring our veterans. We want to show that our fallen veterans, “Have Not Been Forgotten.
On Friday April 12th we had our 2nd Annual Disco Night Fever Dance. This was our last event before our “Snow Birds” return north. We want to thank all of them and our residents for the continual support all have given to our Fairways Veterans Group and wish them a safe trip back home. Keep safe and remember, we look forward in seeing you back here in the fall.
Military History Days in May

May 7, 1945 - In Reims, Northern France, General Alfred Jodl signed the unconditional surrender of all German fighting forces. May 8, 1942 - Battle of the Coral Sea began. May 11, 1862 - the Confederate Ironclad Merrimac was destroyed by the Confederate Navy. May 11, 1969 - During the Vietnam War, the Battle of “Hamburger Hill” began. May 14, 1942 - During World War II, an Act of Congress allowed women to enlist for noncombat duties.

Memorial Day is the day we pause in these hectic lives we live; to praise those who gave our country everything they had to give.
This is a day of homage to our immortal dead.
A day that we pay tribute to those who fought and bled.
This is the day to remember those battles, so easy to ignore, that they fought to protect our future; a cause they believed worth dying for.
This is the day in our minds, to remember and reflect, and bestow upon each fallen hero the highest medal - our respect.
This is the day of heroes and a chance to display our pride; a time to show that we still adore the country for which they fought and died. This is the day to cherish the freedom too often taken for granted: for the blessings we enjoy today are from the seeds those heroes planted.
This is the day we face our flag and get down on our knees; to pray for those who gave the greatest gift so it could wave proudly in the breeze. This is a day meant for them so let us not forget to spend some time to honor those who died with no regret.
This is the day for families to share memories from years ago, and to learn about the relatives that they never got the chance to know. This is the day we remember to enlighten each new generation; that we can never cease to pay homage to those who died for this great nation.
This is the day we bow our heads to honor headstones with their name though we may not know who is buried there, we thank them just the same. This is the day to affirm...though their earthly bodies are gone, their bravery, pride, and spirit in American hearts live on.
All of their tomorrows, they gave away that day. and for these many, many years within their graves, they lay. Forever young they’ll always be, no chance to raise a family. They gave their all that we might live; their lives were all that they could give.
And with the passing of the years, we still can see their mothers’ tears. They never would be coming home. They just belong to God alone.
So, Remember: Remember those who went before, who fought for us and died in war. Remember those who gave their lives: on Land and Sea and in the Skies.
Teach the young about their war, and as the years pass may we see no more. No sons and dads and brothers lost; for war demands such a deadly cost. History remembers them, and so do we. They died for us, to keep us free. Their freedom passed for us to keep; we remember them in Eternal Sleep.
This is the day that they will look down from their heavenly domain, And they’ll know we still cherish our freedom and that they did not die in vain. This is a day we hear the sound of muted taps so softly fade away A farewell to our honored dead on this Memorial Day.
On Wednesday afternoon April 24, a group of about 20 residents donated their afternoon and early evening to help improve the fairways by filling divots and repairing ball marks on the greens.
Mark “The Prez” Kornmann took the reins and coordinated the assault on the course with the precision of the worldfamous Normandy Invasion. The back 9 holes were slow and tedious and at least 500 pounds of sand and seed filled the holes left behind by golfers.
Upon completion, the Back 9 Team moved on to the front 9 starting on number 9 and working their way backwards to meet up with the smaller Front 9 Team who started on number 1 and met up on hole number 5.
Basil Boone was instrumental in providing support by keeping the fillers
supplied with sand and filling in the larger areas by shoveling hundreds of yards of sand in the barren areas on the course.
After meeting in the middle of number 5 and completing the day, all participants met in the pro shop for pizza, drinks and door prizes provided by Christian, our course superintendent.
The day was a success due to the unselfish commitment by a group of dedicated residents and a lot of sore backs.
Next year we will make an effort to give even more ample notice so more people can plan to attend and make light work of it.
Many thanks to those who did attend and good golfing to all and please remind your teammates to fill a divot and let’s keep our course nice.

The National Hurricane Center, AccuWeather and Colorado State University will release their first predictions before the official start of the season on June 1. Early indications, though, are that it will be an active season due to the combination of La Niña and record warm water temperatures in the Atlantic basin, which includes the northern Atlantic, Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico.
The National Hurricane Center will start issuing daily tropical outlooks on conditions in the Atlantic basin starting May 15 and the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30.
Names for the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season were last used in 2018 and will be used again in 2030 unless any are retired and replaced by the World Meteorological Organization.

Women’s Championship Flight
1 – Barb Avery 2 – Sue Morin & Lynne Blair (Tie)
Men’s Competition Flight (Red Tees)

Hopefully next year we can enjoy a bit larger turnout.
Charge Your Battery Completely Before Leaving
When the battery – if you have a lead-acid battery – and your golf cart is deprived of a full charge, it causes sulfation. This is a buildup of lead sulfate crystals which is the number one cause of early battery failure. Lead-acid batteries self-discharge when they are not used for a long period of time.
Disconnect Electrical Accessories
All electrical accessories and anything that might draw off the battery pack should be disconnected from your golf cart before you stow it away. The TOW/RUN switch should be set to TOW to fully shut the car down. Leaving your golf cart in RUN mode is hazardous.
Arrange for Maintenance While You’re Away
Have a friend or neighbor – or hire someone – to regularly check the water levels and charge the batteries. Apart from the batteries, your tires are likely to get worn out and develop flat spots if not driven for long periods of time. Having someone periodically drive the golf car is a good idea or place a block under the frame.
Thoroughly Clean Your Golf Cart
Use soap and water, degreaser and any other cleaning products of your choice to help you wash away any dried mud, sand, grime and dirt on the cart. Make sure battery terminal connections are thoroughly cleaned and if they do show corrosion use baking soda and water. You can also use a battery terminal cleaner spray.
Store in a Secure Place
If you have to store the cart in a semi-enclosed area or outdoors, protect it with a waterproof cover. Be sure to secure it so that strong winds won’t blow it away.

Do you have trouble remembering names, dates, or other things? Try to find the answer in your own memory. Before you try to look up the answer or go online to look something up, give yourself a chance to search through your memory banks and pull up the information. Increasing reliance on online information isn’t just keeping us from challenging our memory, but it’s also making us less confident in our ability to store and recall information. People are turning to Google or other search engines before trying to recall the information on their own. But remember, the brain strengthens every time we use it! Actively recalling information is one of the best ways to exercise your mind. To stimulate your brain and build up long term memories, give your brain power a boost, and “rack your brain” for an answer before asking your phone, computer, or other digital tool to do all the work.
