DUELING PIANOS

FHAOI presented another fun evening on August 17 bringing back the popular Dueling Pianos “B’s Keys”. They once again had several residents up and dancing and celebrated two birthdays with Angela David and Connie Fasano. Sandy Eagle wore the perfect piano shirt, so she was chosen to perform “air piano” during a crowd favorite song. We hope everyone who attended enjoyed themselves and thank you as always for your support with the events FHAOI offers.

FHAOI 2025 Board Opening Candidates

There are three FHAOI board openings for the 2025 year and these positions are for two-year terms. As of press time these residents have asked to be considered for these positions.

JOHN CUTSINGER

I’ve been a Fairways resident for eight years, and an active member of the community.

As a past board member and social activities director, I brought back activities and events after the Covid-19 pandemic.

After nearly two years, I resigned the social director position to assume responsibility for the planning and production of the Eagle newspaper which I led for 18 months until I had some health issues.

I’m back to good health and have a renewed desire to serve the community again as a member of the board.

TOM DAVID

I was raised in Niagara Falls, NY and lived in Fairport, NY until 2023. I have my Undergraduate Degree from Georgia State University BA in Finance, and MBA from University of Buffalo. I worked in Finance for over 20+ years as a Mortgage lender and Treasury Management.

My wife Angela and I moved to Florida to escape the cold of upstate NY in 2023. We chose Fairways Country Club for the community, activities and people.

I have served on several boards including my previous HOA board and enjoy helping wherever I can.

MELANIE KLEMENTS

I am from New York and was born in Manhattan. I am the oldest of four with three younger brothers. We moved to Florida in 1979, and I have been here ever since.

My wife, Patti Singleton, and I lived in south Orlando for 22 years. We decided to move to a 55+ community and found Fairways and we love living here with all the activities and especially the people. Everyone has been so nice and helpful.

I have 3 dogs, a Shorkie (Lance), a Shitzu (Manny) and a Boxer (Maxine). I work for a home builder in the warranty department, so most days I’m listening to people complain! LOL

I want to be on the Board to be a part of a community, not just live here. I want to try and make things better. I enjoy being around people and I want to bring different ideas to the community.

DIXIE LoCICERO

I’ve been a Fairways resident since 2014, working for JetBlue and as a local Tupperware representative.

I was born in St. Louis, Missouri and have lived in Florida to Missouri and as far west as California. I joined the Navy right after high school. After 30 years in the Chicago suburbs, Imoved to Orlando.

I have two grown children and two granddaughters. I am married to Julie Kovarik, and we have two dogs.

I enjoy outdoor activities, sports, music/dancing and reading.

Thank you to the FHAOI Board for all they do in making things happen in the community and making sure that we are representing the residents.

A Note from the President

Well, believe it or not, it’s already September. Let’s hope we start to get reprieve from the heat of the past three months. There is a great deal going on in the community and I hope you all can get out and take advantage of the activities.

SEPTEMBER IS A BUSY MONTH:

We kick-off September with the FHAOI Board Meeting Thursday, September 12 at 7 pm at the Masters Clubhouse. Please plan to join and learn the latest going on with the community and FHAOI.

We then move to the yard sale on Saturday, September 21 as Bonnie Johnson heads the Community Yard Sale from 9 am-2 pm. Please contact Bonnie if you have any questions.

Lois Fleming, FHAOI V.P., has been busy organizing and planning the Saturday, September 28 Craft Fair and Sweet Shop. You don’t want to miss this. Plenty of great crafts and yummy sweets. The event will be at the Master’s Clubhouse from 9 am-2 pm. Reach out to Lois if you have any questions. Breakfast and Lunch will be available for purchase.

FHAOI BOARD SEATS:

We have three open FHAOI board seats for 2025. These three seats are two-year terms. Once the new board is elected, they will meet to select officers for the Board. If you have questions about the Board and the elections, please reach out to one of the current board members.

GOLF TOURNAMENT/GALA:

Your golf team has been hard at work putting together the Third annual Fall Ball Golf Tournament. It’s going to be a great tournament with lots of fun and surprises!! We look forward to everyone coming together and enjoying the event!!

I want to close by thanking the FHAOI Board for all they do in making things happen in the community and making sure that we are representing the residents. There is a great deal happening to build community and I appreciate those efforts.

Let us know how we can better serve you and how we can make Fairways a great place to live!

Join the Team!

We already have some residents interested in joining the Board – see page 1 – and there’s still an opportunity for you to be on the ballot!

We have three openings for the 2025 year and these positions are for two-year terms. To apply for one of the board seats, please:

1. Send an email to FHAOIBoard@gmail.com with your name, address, phone number and email.

2. Indicate how long you have lived in Fairways and any groups that you have been involved with and/or supported.

3. Include in the email a short statement as to why you want to serve on the FHAOI Board and indicate your areas of strength which will make you an asset to the Board. Please reach out to any Board Member if you have any questions!

T he Craft Fair and Sweet Shop planning is coming along nicely! Set for Saturday, September 28, we’ll have 31 vendors showcasing their crafts with something to suit every taste and style. We still need donations for the Sweet Shop – baked goods of any kind are welcome. Our menu is set for breakfast and lunch and this year we are offering transportation to residents. We’ll pick you up at home and take you to the Masters and also drive you back home when you’re ready. Melanie Klements will be taking reservations, and we’ll publish all the details as the date gets closer.

For more information and updates, message or Email Lois at 727423-1717 or email FHAOIBoard@gmail.com. If you want to donate to the Sweet Shop Text Lisbeth at 407.271.7906 or email at Lisbeth. Fairwayseagle@gmail.com

We look forward to welcoming you to our Craft Fair Fundraiser— an event where every purchase makes a difference.

In August we were able to sponsor a Basic CPR Class conducted by Dedicated Senior Medical Center and The Red Cross. The class provided training to about 40 residents. Many residents feel more comfortable now if they have to use the tools they were provided. Later in the month of September the second part of the class will be at the Masters, and we will announce the day and time to all that attended the first class. We will be offering another Basic CPR class provided for those that were not able to attend the first one.

The month of September is a very sad and somber time for all Americans. On Tuesday September 11, 2001, in the early morning hours, militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda attacked targets in the United States resulting in the deadliest terrorist attacks on American soil in U.S. history. I know that most of us will remember where we were when we first heard about it.

As veterans, we will honor all those who sacrificed their lives on that day. Many suffered side effects that also took their lives afterwards. They include Firefighters, EMT, Paramedics, Law Enforcement Officers, Doctors, Nurses and many civilians. We will forever remember them and pray for the families. We will be holding a Memorial Service starting at 8:30 am at the Fairways Veterans Memorial to honor that day.

The “Helping Homeless Veterans Drive” is still ongoing. We received confirmation from the Veterans Administration that over 120 homeless veterans will be receiving toiletry supplies with what was collected so far. We are committed to continue helping those that have sacrificed and served their country with honor, pride and commitment, to give us the freedom we enjoy today. The donation box will remain in the Greenbrier Library. If you are not able to drop off your donations or if you have any questions as to what items you can donate, please feel free to call, me, 407-913-3681.

Commanders Thoughts: Don’t wait until “Veterans Day”

A Special Thank You to the HTA Maintenance Team!

Here are some little-known facts about our stellar maintenance team:

Gilbert Rodriguez, Maintenance Supervisor, has been with Fairways since 2016. Gilbert came to us from the apartment industry where he was a maintenance supervisor for properties from the west coast to the east coast. Gilbert has a vast amount of knowledge and experience that he brings to Fairways each day and he is a great team leader. Gilbert loves to go on vacation with his family and his grandchildren.

Abby Velazquez, Housekeeping, has been with the Fairways team since 2016. Abby is our Lead Housekeeper, and she has trained all the new housekeepers. She is involved in her church and loves to be with her family.

Steve Savchuk, Maintenance, and has been with the Fairways team since 2016. Steve is our go to guy when the office is not open. He will check the pools every day, read the Master water meters, fix the gate and anything else we ask him to do all before he clocks in at 7AM. Steve is also a resident of Fairways and is super friendly to everyone.

Michelle Lewis, Housekeeping, has been with the Fairways team since 2019. Michelle has a passion for making things look perfect, especially the clubhouses. Michelle is especially good with plants, she has 10 green thumbs.

Jose Marcano, Maintenance, has been with the Fairways team since 2021. Jose is a genius when it comes to fixing machines and utility vehicles. Jose is also a resident at Fairways and loves to enjoy his family on the weekends.

Cesar Montilla, Maintenance, is new to the Fairways team. Cesar joined Fairways this year. In just a few short months, Cesar has become an important team player who specializes in keeping the grounds looking perfect. Cesar is also a Fairways resident.

Eliezer Guedez, Maintenance, is also very new to the Fairways team. Eliezer joined Fairways this year and works alongside Cesar in landscaping. Between the two of them, our grounds always look top notch. Eliezer is also a Fairways resident.

Milton Hinojose, Maintenance, is new to the Fairways team. Milton joined Fairways this year and in just a few short months, has become an important team player who is an assistant in groundskeeping, water repairs and painting.

Jay Amaral, has been part of the Fairways team since 2012. Jay makes sure all the clubhouses and pools are opened by 7am and closed by 11pm. Jay has been diligently securing our buildings for over 12 years and no one sees him at work. He may be stealth, but we couldn’t do it without him. I love his smile and upbeat personality. Jay also lives in the Fairways.

Latin American Club Update

Hello September,

Hello Autumn! Wouldn’t it be great to see the change of seasons here in Florida? Those of us from up North can recall the changes in colors of the tree leaves and the brisk cooler weather of the fall days.

We at the Latin American Club, would like to thank all the members, neighbors and friends for joining us at our Fiesta Huracan/ Hurricane Party that was a success thanks to you all. It was a fun filled evening with lots of laughs, dancing, in addition to providing important hurricane information to all in attendance. I have included pictures of the party for your viewing.

We are hard at work preparing for our next event. Our next planned event will be our Hispanic Heritage Party, which will be held on Saturday, October 5th, 2024, at the Master’s Clubhouse from 6:00-10:30 pm. More party

details to follow in the coming weeks. At our general member meeting held on Thursday, July 25th, we had 28 members in attendance. We celebrated all our July member birthdays. Our general meetings are open to all Fairways residents and are held on the fourth Thursday of the month at 6:00 pm at the Master’s Clubhouse. After a brief informational meeting we enjoy birthday cake, and games like dominoes and bingo, and we would love to see you there.

You can reach the club at our newly revamped Facebook page at Latin American Club at Fairways (LACF) or by email at latinamericanclub2024@gmail.com. The club President Gladys Carpena can also be contacted directly at either (201) 710-0753 or (407) 456-3091.

Should older people own a pet for good health?

If your dear pet has passed on, should you get another? Recent studies suggest that pet ownership is associated with improved mental health. Having a pet may contribute to slower cognitive decline. That may help keep your brain sharp and improve your mental health. The key is the stress lowering benefits pets provide. They provide companionship and a sense of purpose and responsibility – both of which are linked to better moods and sharper thinking skills.

Studies have found that pet ownership is especially impactful. Of course, we all know that long term pet ownership has its challenges. There are financial commitments. Having a pet underfoot can raise the risk of falls. But if you have been a pet owner in the past, you probably are aware of what it takes to properly care for a pet and in return, what affection, companionship, and devotion they give back.

“Mind, Mood, and Memory”, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School.

Fairways residents –and beyond – are enjoying the beautiful photography our resident Steve Buyea provides on a weekly basis with his posts in the Facebook groups and on NextDoor. I thought you’d like to know more about our talented neighbor!

Steve’s passion has reached as far as California with people commenting on how much they enjoy his postings and looking forward to each new group of birds he shares. It is comforting to him to feel he is “helping someone out there, those who are shut in and can’t get out and experience what I can, so I love to share with them”. He did not initially put his photos on Nextdoor or Facebook, but an elderly lady began messaging him encouraging him to do so and now he receives hundreds of emails and texts thanking him for sharing his world.

He grew up in Eau Gallie, FL and in 1976 right out of high school joined the Navy as a torpedo man and branched out into computers and electronics. He was never on board a ship or sub but worked onshore testing all the IT equipment. He was in the military police in San Diego before coming to Orlando as an IT instructor. After serving in the Navy for 20 years, he retired in 1996 and worked for Orange County Public Schools, working his way up to Sr. Administrator in IT where he retired after 25 years.

He met his wife Bonnie in 1998 and much like the Brady Bunch, blended their family with five children. Today they have six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren! They’ve lived in Fairways twice over the years. The first time caring for Bonnie’s parents for ten years and now it’s been about four years since they moved back because they like it so much.

Steve loves photography, and as an early riser and loving the early morning light, wildlife photography became his focus. And he soon realized there was plenty worth capturing right here in his Fairways neighborhood. There are so many factors that result in the perfect picture. It can

sometimes take hours to get ‘the’ shot you want, so patience is key. When talking about sitting and waiting for the right moment Steve explained, “I see wildlife in a different setting. I block it in to get just the right angle rather than all the surrounding trees and landscape. It really does take my breath away when I know I’ve captured a great shot.”

He shared that he “cheats” with a Bluetooth speaker and will turn the volume up loud and play bird calls (mating sounds, calling sounds, distress sounds) and they will come flying right at him. Now you know one way he gets those perfect shots of birds in flight. The cardinals and hummingbirds are hardest to catch but he’s done it. He doesn’t like taking pictures of people’s

There are so many factors that result in the perfect picture. It can sometimes take hours to get ‘the’ shot you want, so patience is key.

He goes out every day and learns more each time. He likes all animals, the sun and moon, but finds birds the most enjoyable. He is a member of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology (the study of birds). He sends photos to the lab, and they confirm the identity of the birds and note where and when they were photographed. There are so many different birds in Fairways and Steve watches and records the markings and habits of many individual birds. He logs where they eat and sleep, tracks their movement and their travel patterns among the different ponds.

feeders or when they are sitting on the road. Sitting in a tree or on the side of the pond, now it looks nice.

One huge benefit of what Steve does is how it has positively affected his health. His doctors thought he could have Parkinson’s disease as his hands were shaking so much. It turns out he has essential tremors and was told to start lifting heavy things to build up his arms and hands. He had me hold the camera and lens he uses most often, and I will tell you it is heavy! Both the doctor and Steve have noticed a dramatic decrease in his tremors. Not only that, but he finds it to be like meditating and when he’s concentrating all his energy on the camera and wildlife, he has no stress, his cholesterol and blood pressure have dropped, and it’s even helped his eyesight with the various eye muscles that contract.

Steve doesn’t sell his art as he wants to keep his work fresh and not lose the inspiration. He simply wants to make people happy, and we are grateful for his talent.

I chose the Super-Hero theme to recognize the qualities and attributes of all my amazing participants, as well as to highlight all the “powerful woman” who gets up early every week to come and take care of their health by exercising, socializing and having fun.

IMA medical group and Guided Solutions were sponsors of this fun event by providing raffles and snacks after to continue the celebration after class. I am grateful for this community and amazed by the positive changes I have seen on my regular participants that continue working out as part of their routine. Contributed by Scott Glover, Roving Golf Reporter

On Saturday, August 24, Gene Palermo had yet another hole in one.

Playing in The Carpenter Group with Jay Nelson, Bob Cherr y, Reino Koitto and Gar y Fournier Gene delivered his sixth hole in one, his second in the last two months!

Gene approached the 15th hole, playing at 90 yards on this day, and pulled out his pitching wedge and str uck the ball pure. His ball landed some five feet behind the hole and spun hard backwards, the type of shot you see on PGA Tour broadcasts, to find the bottom of the cup.

Once his round was finished Gene collected his prize money of almost $500 and bought beers for all in attendance. When asked about his feat, Gene proclaimed, “This is better than winning the lotter y!!!”

Fairways Palm Valley Mixed League Reorganized Meeting

Are you looking for something fun to do on Monday mornings? Have you ever bowled? Have you never bowled? That doesn’t matter to us. Join our fun group of bowlers.

Our league is looking for people to join us on Monday mornings for 11 AM bowling. We have openings on current teams and are also looking for bowlers interested in being substitutes. Come out and meet fellow bowlers and have an enjoyable time. We are a noncompetitive “fun league” with a league bowling average of 120. Fifteen percent of our bowlers have averages below 100.

The League will be holding a reorganization meeting at Boardwalk Bowl 10749 East Colonial Drive at 11 AM Monday, September 30th. Free “No Tap” bowling will follow the meeting. Regular league play will start at 10:30 Monday, October 2nd, and ending in late April.

The League is made up of bowlers of various ages from the Fairways and Palm Valley communities, but you do not have to reside there if you are 55+. We are always looking for new members to join us as substitutes or regular full-time team members.

“A stranger is a friend you haven’t met yet.” For further information, call Brad Weeks at 713-582-1010.

FAIRWAYS PANTRY FOOD

In just a little less than three weeks, Sandy and James Dennis will be back from the north, and we’ll be hosting our Second Food Pantry Fundraiser of the year.

Location: 14432 Hazeltine

Date: Saturday, 9/21 (same day as the Community Yard Sale)

Breakfast: Biscuits and sausage gravy or sausage biscuit served from 7:00-10:30 am

Lunch: Served from 11:00 am until it’s gone.

This year, Mottram will be cooking not one, but three briskets on Friday night!

To make the brisket go a little further and keep costs down, we’ll be serving delicious Brisket “Stuffed” grilled cheese sandwiches. Trust us, you won’t be disappointed! Chopped brisket is served on thick sliced bread with cheddar jack and American cheese and then grilled to perfection.

We’ll also have hot dogs, and Colleen will be making her park-favorite potato salad, while Shelly will provide Mac & Cheese and coleslaw. Each lunch meal will come with a choice of two sides.

Breakfast: $5.00 Hotdogs with sides: $5.00 Brisket sandwich meal: $10.00

Please remember, 100% of the proceeds will go right back to support the residents in our community. And if you’ve been saving golf balls for us, James will be ready to collect them that day too and get our golf ball program up and running.

We hope to see you, Shelly, Sandy, Mottram and James

Time for a New Study

September has begun which means it’s time for a new Bible study to start. This month the ladies at the Fairways Christian Women’s Connection are beginning a study of the book of James. Chapters 1 and 2 will be covered this month. Our two evening sessions are on the 5th and 19th at 6:30 pm at the Greenbrier.

Jo Lynn Haussmann is continuing her afternoon study on the 12th and 26th. The afternoon sessions are at 2 pm at Jolynn’s home at 14721 Firestone. All the ladies in Fairways are welcome to join us at either study.

Our bi-monthly “out-to-lunch” is at Cracker Barrel in Titusville on Tuesday, September 24th at noon. We will meet at the Masters at 11:30 for carpooling. Everyone is welcome even if you’ve never been to anything before.

Samaritan Resource Center at Dean Road and Colonial is our outreach partner. Bottled water is always appreciated, so add it to your shopping list next time you’re at the store. The drop off is at Penny Maguire’s house at 14349 Augusta Road. If you prefer, you can donate cash and water will be purchased for you.

Contact Jane Slotnick at 407-808-3171.

Calling All Golf Balls!

In just a few short weeks, our golf ball program will kick off again on hole number seven. Golfers can take a ball and leave a donation that we use to help fund the Food Pantry. And they do leave donations! It’s a great fundraiser for us. Do you live on the golf course and have golf balls laying in your yard. Or do you pick them up when you walk the dog? Well, you are our people! Please consider donating them. Remember, your donation directly impacts our community! Please reach out to Shelly and Curt Mottram if you’d like to contribute. We can arrange for pickup, or you can drop them off in the driveway at 14432 Hazeltine.

As always, thank you for your continued support!

Shelly Mottram and Sandy Dennis

O

n behalf of the family of Dianna Dargel: Dianna Dargel’s family sincerely thanks everyone who attended her celebration of life on August 3, 2024.

She was such a kind and thoughtful person and would have been touched to know that you all came together to remember her. Dianna was a very loved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, friend and dog-mom to Sassy and Prince. She will be truly missed.

Thank you to the Fairways community for the kindness you showed her and the support you continue to show my Dad David during this time.

Fairways Sewing Group

We are getting ready for the Fairways Annual Craft Show. It will be on September 28 at the Masters Clubhouse from 9AM until 2PM. We hope you will stop by and see the items we have been working on.

In July we donated 2 large lap blankets to one of our members to take up to the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area. They were made with heavy duty yarn right for cooler climates.

Thank you to all our neighbors and friends for all the sewing items and yarn that have been donated to us. It keeps us busy and creative. If you have something you would like to donate you can drop it off at the Greenbrier between 8:30 and 11:00 am on Wednesdays. We can also pick up items if you would like. Give Donna Dale a call at (561)818-1354 or Sue Creighton (407)382-8718.

You are invited to join our sewing group when we are at the Greenbrier Clubhouse on Wednesdays from 8:30 until 11:00 am and take a break at 10 for coffee and a treat.

We look forward to welcoming you!

Singles Club Update

We were upset to miss our trip to the Titusville Cracker Barrel in August, but Debby made an appearance, and we had to call it off.

For September, we are thinking ahead and we’re skipping the first Sunday since that is Labor Day weekend. We’re also going to stay closer to home. The Chinese restaurant close to the bowling alley is where we will meet on September 8 at 4:00 pm. The name of the restaurant is Hong Kong Alley Kitchen, and it’s located at 10663 E. Colonial. I’ve been there not too long ago, and it was delicious.

Please call Suzanne by Saturday so she can get an accurate count of who is going.

September will be the last month we skip brunch and will have dinner at Goodfellas at 4 pm on September 19. I checked it twice to make sure it’s the third Thursday this time!

A reminder that members of the Singles Club meet every Saturday at the Greenbrier to play cards and dice games. Bring your quarters, dimes and nickels at 6 pm on Saturdays. These ladies play to win!

If you are new to the park and you are single, please join us. We are lots of fun.
