FHAOI held its first Not So Newlywed Game on April 5. Social Director Melanie Klements brought the classic game show to Fairways and everyone had a good time and enjoyed quite a few laughs. Patti Singleton spent hours collecting questions to ask the couples during two separate games. Round one featured Larry & Kim Hysong, Jose & Sandy DeJesus, Frank & Reenie Nix and Jody Justice & Randy Taylor. Round two had Julie Kovarik & Dixie LoCicero, Brad & Renay Johnson, Dale & Carolyn Dennany and Susan & Phil Clark.
Game winners were Jose & Sandy DeJesus and Brad & Renay Johnson with each couple receiving a $50 gift card.
Special thanks to Patti Singleton who hosted the event, asking plenty of unique questions for the couples to ponder. We appreciate everyone joining us for some laughs and plan to iron out a couple of minor kinks and bring the game back next year.

CATHY NANFELDT FHAOI PRESIDENT
From Your FHAOI President
The months are flying by, and it hardly seems possible that we are already in May. Melanie is busy selling tickets to our Sunday, May 18 event with comedian/ hypnotist, Boris Cherniak. This promises to be a fun evening and we hope to see many familiar faces joining us.
There is not a board meeting in May so as always, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions or issues.
We are gearing up to get the 2025 Resident Directory ready for publication. We will keep you posted on its progress. The FHAOI remains busy planning the Fourth Annual Fall Ball Tournament & Gala to be held November 8. And stay tuned for details on the fun activities Melanie is planning, including a 70’s dance in June, bringing back Family Feud in July and a pool party in August. We had our board meeting on April 10 with special guest, the Commissioner for Orange County District 5, Dr. Kelly Semrad. She spoke about living in our east side area and knowing all too well the pain of navigating East Colonial Drive. She discussed working with local officials to carefully consider the impact of the urban sprawl being built and the issues it presents without adding infrastructure to accommodate the extra traffic.
Dr. Semrad specifically added her desire to make use of tourism funds rather than increasing sales tax to improve traffic and mass transportation vs building a new convention center. She mentioned the increasing homeless population, including the “Silver Wave” (Those people who simply cannot afford to live elsewhere, especially given medications and food, etc.). Fairways is located within the unincorporated area of Orange County, and they are trying to get a hurricane shelter east of the Econ River, which, if built, would make the second hurricane shelter in the area. She discussed the upcoming vote to redistribute the districts and potentially adding two more districts causing district 5 to become smaller and more manageable, and our area likely becoming district 8.
She would hope to be able to regain this district since she lives here and knows it well. She also talked about the fact that the mayor is term limited, and the seat is up for election, along with several other positions in Orange County. Those in attendance had a few questions and enjoyed listening to her speak. Thanks again to Tom David for arranging her time with us and we look forward to having her join us again with updates.
Following is a review of key items discussed at our third of the monthly meetings. I opened the meeting by thanking Priscilla for providing the community group leaders with training on how to use the new defibrillators. She asked if FHAOI would be interested in additional CPR classes, and I told her I felt like many would like to participate in that if offered. I expect that another training class will be scheduled in the near future.
UPDATES ON PREVIOUS ITEMS:
• Pertinent information for residents about the massive improvements to the wastewater treatment plant, will go out via the One Call system using text and emails. Work began mid-April with crews being seen along the cart path next to the treatment plant.
• The signs have arrived and are waiting to be installed hopefully soon at each end of Inverary to make night driving easier using reflective markers on poles on each side of the road.
• The existing Firepit will need to be removed and replaced. Priscilla mentioned the possibility of putting in two fire pits, making two seating areas for residents to meet and enjoy. She needs to research all of this, and it will likely not happen until next year.
• The Greenbrier roofing project is just waiting for a permit, and work will begin on the roof and fascia. Notice will go out to residents advising when the Greenbrier will need to be briefly closed for construction.
• Regarding the Masters media system, there is no update. Hometown America is waiting for the final report before any work can be done. It is hopeful this work will include the still finicky rack system that manages the TVs and projector. On April 23, Bingo had to go on without the use of the TVs, making the event a real challenge.
HIGHLIGHTS OF NEW ITEMS:
1. HTA will review all the first aid kits in the park to be sure nothing is expired and replace items as needed. They will also put gloves inside each kit.
2. Per Priscilla, the new stop signs at Hazeltine and Pebble Beach are NOT a “3-way stop” but a “2-way stop”. She stated they will remove the stop sign on Torrey Pines. At the time of this report, it is still there.
3. I asked about the drains on Pebble Beach where they paved because several seem to be pretty low. I was told that the drains would not be changed since between the mix and mill and paving, the height of the road would not change. I think everyone can agree with me that now that the work is complete that the large section of Pebble Beach that was paved is much better.
4. A few residents who walk had asked about the idea of placing a few benches throughout the park to be able to take a rest. Priscilla is not opposed to the idea but said the benches can only be put on “common areas” and it would need to wait until next year.
5. I reported to her that the room the poker players use to the left of the stage in the Masters is “beyond warm” and they need use a fan to be comfortable. Priscilla said they would investigate. As of April 23, one of the players let me know the room is still very warm compared to the rest of the Masters.
Our next meeting with HTA will be on Thursday, May 1st and the report on the items discussed will be in the June issue of the Eagle.

HTA Bus Trip to Hard Rock Casino Graded “Highly Recommend!”
by Cathy Nanfeldt
On Thursday, April 9 around fifty somewhat groggy Fairways residents checked in and loaded a bus at 8:00 am headed to Tampa. Barb Mishloney and Johnny Cutsinger, with the help of Cricket O’Donnell and Mary Tatro, kept the passengers entertained during the drive, by playing bingo and trivia.
Everyone had a great time and there were several big winners returning to the bus with huge smiles and one with big bags of merchandise! Everyone met the deadline of being on the bus by 3:00 p.m. and snacks and more games awaited the group for the return drive. The traffic angels were on their side as Jeremiah pulled back into Fairways just before 5 pm.
It is safe to say that HTA’s Co-Social Directors, Barb and Johnny, will plan another bus trip in the – hopefully – not too distant future.
Veterans Corner

Memorial Day Remembrance
Once a year we observe one day to remember, honor, pay our respects and mourn the U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. It was originally known as Decoration Day. On Monday May 26th, the Fairways Veterans Group will hold a “Memorial Day Remembrance” service at the Fairways Veterans Memorial adjacent to the Masters Clubhouse. It will begin at 10:00 am. We invite all of Fairways residents and their families to attend.
FIELD OF FLAGS TO RAISE AWARENESS OF VETERAN SUICIDE
On Friday May 23rd starting at 9 am, we will meet at the “Fairways Triangle” to place 660 flags to remember and bring awareness to the hardships that many veterans have faced. Often primarily due to the situations they encountered while serving this wonderful nation, and how they were treated upon their return home. We are asking for volunteers to help with the placing of the flags.
On Friday April 18th we had our 3rd Annual Disco Night Fever Dance. There was a great turnout to listen to the music with Dave Capp with his trumpet and France Neil with vocals. We want to thank everyone for the continued support the Fairways Veterans Group has received over the years. This was our last event before
our “Snow Birds” return north. We want to wish them a safe trip back home. Keep safe and remember, we look forward to seeing you back here in the fall.
Military History Days in May – Congress designated May as National Military Appreciation Month.

Masters week is a special week to golfers around the world and to one of our own residents it was made even more special.
John’s week started out with a big win on a Florida Lottery scratch off, he won somewhere between $1 and $1,000,000 and continued on his streak of good luck with his first ever hole-in-one.
John was playing in Fran Bernier’s Wednesday Scramble on April 9th with his teammates, Gene Palermo, Lou Defabrizio and Don Pfeiffer.
The miracle shot came on hole number 17 which was playing at 109 yards into a light breeze. Remembering all the instructions he had received from his wife and golf teacher, Pat Jennings the winner of the women’s division of the Fairways putting contest last year, the lefthander pulled his pitching wedge from the bag and took aim at the flag.
The three quarter swing sent the ball on line with its intended target and slam dunked it between the flag stick and the edge of the cup. His teammates let out a roar reminiscent of one of Tiger’s shots at Augusta.
After his round John collected his winnings, somewhere between $10 and $1,000 and bought everyone in the pro shop an adult beverage. In all seriousness though after the year John had with his health, it was great to see him out playing again and experience something most golfers never achieve.
Congratulations, John. Let’s see more of those hole-in-ones.

You’ve all read and heard about the period of drought we’re going through right now in Central Florida. Keeping your plants and trees doing well and designing a landscape that works well with the climate is not easy! As you probably know here in 32826 our area was rezoned to now be a 10A ecological region, so some adjustments may need to be made and there are opportunities to plant varieties you haven’t tried before. Native plants are a good option and always worth checking out. They’re easier to maintain and naturally wellused to our soil conditions and climate.
Our water continues to get more expensive, so effective and smart water usage is important! Soaker hoses work well in certain areas and are a good way to water consistently and without waste. And do organize your plantings by water need to simplify your watering schedule, and keep your plants happy!
If your name is not included and you want it to be, or if there is incorrect information, please contact Lisbeth Echeandia at 407-271-7906 or email to fairwayseaglecontent@gmail.com

Heartbeat of the Community- CHAPTER
by Jim Creighton
A hand to hold, a smile to share, they make the load lighter, the burden easier to bear. They help rebuild the shattered soul, mending what’s broken, making it whole. A whispered word, a gentle touch, to some, it may not seem like much, but in the dark, when hope runs thin, these helpers’ hands reach out again. They carry the burdens that others can’t bear, with hands full of hope and hearts full of care. For in every moment, every hour they spend, they remind us that kindness will never end. A warm embrace, a simple smile, they go the extra, selfless mile. With hands that serve and eyes that see, they build a stronger Fairways community.
They feed the hungry, heal the torn, and offer warmth to hearts forlorn. No task is too simple, no deed too small; they serve with love and give their all. Their hands may tremble, their backs may bend, but they continue to do it again and again. For they know the power of love’s true call, to lift the fallen, to care for all. They walk the paths where others stray, turning the dark black skies gray. Their work is humbling, their touch is kind, their spirit unbroken, and their hearts aligned. For every hour they quietly give, they remind us all how to truly live. not for ourselves, but for the greater whole, like the Fairways volunteers, who heal and console.

Lulu
Rebel Land’s Luna Lovegood – Lulu – is loved by Claire. Claire has been an official Florida resident since 2006 and in her work life was a music teacher in Pennsylvania for 36 years as well as a choir director for a community choir and directed musicals and much more.
Sweet Lulu is an AKC English Labrador and was bred in Texas. Claire volunteered as a breeder/caretaker for the New Horizons Service Dogs organization based in Orange City, Florida, which provides trained service dogs to individuals with disabilities. New Horizons carefully selects female puppies – like Lulu – to keep in their breeding program. These puppies go into family homes where they are raised and reside their entire life. They whelp their puppies at New Horizons and mother and puppies stay there together for about eight weeks.
After her puppies were weaned, Lulu came back home to Claire. The puppies are then placed with puppy raisers for four to six months of socialization and initial training and then go into a specialized training program including the Prison Pup Program, where their personalities are evaluated and it’s determined what type of work and partner, will suit them best.
Lulu – now retired - loves her toys – and carrots – is very people-friendly and a fun, playful dog. “She is such a great dog,” says Claire. “A delight to be with and always so aware of what’s going on around her.”

Fire Danger
The estimated fire danger for our area is currently – as of April 28 – high, and with drought conditions and dry, windy weather increasing the risk of wildfires and brush fires in Central Florida, burn bans have been placed into effect in multiple counties, including Orange County.
Fairways residents, please use extreme caution when grilling at home and please don’t discard your cigarettes on the streets, golf course, public areas or even in your yard. And don’t light a campfire or use a firepit!

Bud Boney Scores His Fifth
by Scott Glover, Roaming Sports Writer
On Tuesday April 8th playing in the Carpenter Group Bud Boney scored his fifth career hole-in-one.
Bud was playing with Jim Cantwell, Jay Nelson, Dave Holley and Ron Wilson.
Bud was having his usual day; fairways, greens, and a bunch of pars, basically boring golf, when he came up to hole number 8 where he decided to spice it up a bit.
The hole was playing at 95 yards with a middle to back pin location, which played well into his gap wedge distance. After surveying the slope of the green, Bud decided to aim just right of the bunker and play a slight fade, which he executed with precision as the ball found the green and made a beeline to the hole.
This reporter was playing in the group behind and knew something extraordinary had happened as we saw Jim Cantwell jumping up and down and screaming like a little schoolgirl.
After his round Bud came in to collect his winnings from The Hole-in-One Pot or as it’s more commonly known, The Shannon Keltner Savings Account and bought a round of drinks for the clubhouse.
Congratulations Bud Boney and I hope you have many more.
