Line Dance 101— The Electric Slide
by Adam Scheblein
When a new person comes to our Tuesday afternoon fun dance at 4pm, we like to tell them to start with the Electric Slide.
You may have seen it at a dance, a wedding or a party. It has its roots from the 1970’s. That was a great time for dancing. It was created from a song called ELECTRIC BOOGIE by Bunny Walker then recorded (covered ) by Reggae Queen Marcia Griffiths.
The Electric Slide was choreographed by Richard “Ric” Silver in 1976 at the New York club called the VAMP.
Originally it was a 22-step dance designed for a New York club, it became a global staple as a simplified 18step, four wall line dance that we do today. In Great Britain it is known as the Candy Dance.
Come and join us each week at the Masters at 4pm for some free fun. You may even hear and dance to the Electric Slide.
Happy Dancing.

A
warm thank you to all those residents who attended the events during Resident Appreciation Month. They were a lot of fun and we especially appreciate the residents who joined us at the Ice Cream Social on the coldest day of the year!”
PRISCILLA HERRICK HTA MANAGER
Welcome SPRING! From Your HTA Social Directors
As we step into the month of March, we welcome a fresh season, new beginnings, and plenty of reasons to celebrate our wonderful community. March brings with it a blend of history, changing weather, and meaningful observances to make it memorable.
• St. Patrick’s Day is March 17th. Time to get out your green
• Daylight Savings time begins Sunday, March 8th. Don’t forget to turn your clocks ahead by one hour.
February was RESIDENT APPRECIATION Month and Hometown America put on some fabulous events for our residents.
We kicked off the month with an Ice Cream Social on February 1st followed by Casino Night on February 13th with some big winners. Hometown America sponsored Music Bingo on the 20th. About 100 residents played bingo while singing to the music. What fun. We closed Residents Appreciation month with our annual Hometown America Invitational on February 25th. WOW, what a fun-filled month and it is all to show our appreciation to our Fairways Family. Thank You.
UPCOMING IMPROVEMENTS –
• I’m sure you all have noticed the new pool furniture at the Fairways pools. Thank you for your patience as we waited for a confirmed delivery date.
• We will begin the second phase of improving the Masters Clubhouse audio/visual equipment shortly. I am waiting on a delivery date for the equipment
• This year we will be paving the cart paths from hole #1 through hole #6. This should begin in May or June.
• The new wastewater treatment plant project is nearing an end.

After the new plant goes on-line, they will begin construction of the operations buildings. Thank you to all the golfers for your patience during this messy construction. You were very accommodating.
REMINDERS:
• The office will be closed on Friday, April 3rd in observance of Good Friday
• As the warmer weather comes blowing in, make sure we have your current contact information. We will be sending out One Calls to all residents if there are any Emergency Announcements for our area. If we don’t have your current phone number, you won’t receive the announcement.
• Orange County has declared official drought conditions. They are reminding residents to clear all debris from gutters as they are dry and could catch fire easily. Also, it is wise to remove any dead leaves around your home in flowerbeds. These could also ignite quickly. Let’s be safe .
Resident Recognition Beautifying our community.
I would like to extend a warm and heartfelt Thank You to the following residents for their outstanding efforts in beautifying their homesites:
April Cassibo Richard Avery
Juana Villanueva Miguel Anzures
Robert Holmes Shirlene Cox
Jack Scott Jose Urena Robert Ryan
Your dedication to maintaining a clean, welcoming, and visually appealing environment truly enhances the spirit of community and inspires others.
Warm wishes, Priscilla Herrick Community Manager

Quilts of Valor for Fairways Veterans
by Annie Ossenkop-Aaron
The Central Florida Quilts of Valor, in conjunction with the Fairways Veterans Group, held two ceremonies in February at the Masters to honor 13 veterans with Quilts of Valor.
The Mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation is to cover Service Members and Veterans “Touched by War” with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor. The Foundation awards quilts to Service Members and Veterans in recognition for their honorable service to our country. “Touched by War” can take on many forms. Anyone who has taken the “Oath of Enlistment” has accepted the

burden and risk and maybe touched by war in ways that are not totally apparent, no matter where or when they served.
A Quilt of Valor is a handcrafted heirloom that takes considerable time to make. Each quilt is carefully pieced and quilted by volunteers. This award is not intended as a surprise, gift or a present for a birthday, anniversary, retirement, or other celebration. There is no cost to the Veteran, however donations are greatly appreciated as the Central Florida Quilts of Valor Foundation is self-funded. There will be additional ceremonies later this year.

There are five Fairways Quilters who are part of the Central Florida QOV Group –Annette Ossenkop-Aaron, Audrey Carr, Teresa O’Neill, Carol Renwick and Jackie Root. For more information or if you wish to nominate a Veteran to receive one of these beautiful quilts, please contact Annie Ossenkop-Aaron at 559-760-9860.

Fairways Gym Etiquette
by Resident Trey Piel
Our neighborhood is fortunate to have a gym available right here in the community. Because we’re a large neighborhood sharing a relatively small fitness space, a little extra courtesy helps ensure everyone can enjoy a safe, clean, and productive workout.
Below are a few friendly reminders to help keep our gym running smoothly for all residents:
Be Mindful of Time on Equipment
During busy hours, others may be waiting. Please try to limit long rest periods on machines, allow others to “work in” between sets when possible, and avoid using phones while sitting on equipment. Additionally, do not stage equipment for your future use as others might need the same equipment before you’re ready to use it.
Come Prepared with a Workout Plan
Knowing what exercises you plan to do helps reduce crowding and keeps traffic flowing through the gym, especially during morning and evening peak hours.
Wipe Down Equipment After Use
Please help keep our shared space clean and healthy by wiping benches, machines, and weights after use, reracking all weights, and disposing of wipes and trash properly.

Keep Noise to a Minimum
Because our gym is a smaller space, please avoid dropping weights when possible, use headphones for music or videos, and keep conversations brief and at a respectful volume.
Be Respectful of Shared Space
Store bags and personal items in designated areas, avoid blocking walkways, and remain aware of others working out nearby.
Follow Posted Gym Guidelines
Any posted time limits or usage guidelines are there to ensure fair access for all residents. Your cooperation is appreciated.
One of the best parts of a neighborhood gym is seeing familiar faces. A friendly greeting and simple courtesy help keep our gym a positive, welcoming space for everyone.
Thank you for doing your part to keep our community gym clean, safe, and enjoyable for all residents.

It’s Valentine’s Day and I arrive at the courts and a black limo shows up and the driver hangs red balloon hearts near the court. Then I turn around and here are the Holmes and the Gljivas playing. Both teams are winless and what a match. The Holmes’, Bob and Eileen, came from behind and won two games 14 to 12 each time. Ozzie said that last ball killed his games all tournament.

Cindy McGrath and Judy Michalski have been making sure the library at the Greenbrier looks great and they –together with volunteers - keep the books current and in great shape.
Once a year, at the beginning of the New Year, the books are ‘weeded,’ and older books are donated to various organizations. “We don’t really have requests for specific authors or titles,” Cindy said. “We have a broad range available and appreciate the donations of books to help broaden our selection.”
Judy agreed – with a caveat. “We do appreciate the book donations, and at the same time we would ask people who have a lot of books to donate to give us a heads up so we can get our volunteers to pick them up when it’s convenient and that they are not just dropped off.”
The library has an estimated 2,200+ books, plus a wide selection of puzzles. Puzzles started to become popular during the COVID lock down and the library is still overwhelmed. So, no more puzzle donations for the time being please!
And yes, the library could use additional volunteers. Especially when there is a large donation of books and muscle is required!
Please reach out to Judy Michalski at 412-853-1459 or Cindy McGrath at 407-222-3146 if you’re interested in volunteering or have questions.
