What does it take to serve on the FHAOI Board? Patience and the love to serve. Over my last four years on the Board, I have met the greatest people and I have learned a lot from all of you.
MARK KORNMANN FHAOI PRESIDENT
A Note from the President

I want to begin this column with a huge thank you to the Fairways Country Club GM Christian, Jim Wood and Terry Kouba and all the Golf Leagues and volunteers who came out and helped to refurbish the Golf Gazebo. Special thanks to Jim Dunham for assisting with this project. Jim has been there for this community for many years. We appreciate you, Jim!!
I also want to acknowledge Sandy Dennisour latest Building Community Hero. Sandy is always stepping up and volunteering to help and she does a fantastic job! Sandy, you make all our lives better because of who you are, your smile, and your words of encouragement. Thanks Sandy!!
I also want to acknowledge Shelly Mottram and our Bingo repairman Tim for fixing up our Bingo machine. The FHAOI had the monitor, camera, and computer replaced. He also gave the machine a thorough cleaning. Our Wednesday night Bingo crew thanks you all!!!
We are heading into the busy season for Fairways and the FHAOI! June marks the beginning of the process to nominate and select the next leaders of FHAOI! In 2025, we have three open seats for the Board. Lois Fleming, Nancy Lang, Renay Johnson, and Cathy Nanfeldt will be returning to FHAOI leadership in 2025.
What does it take to serve on the FHAOI Board? Patience and the love to serve. Over my last four years on the Board, I have met the greatest people and I have learned a lot from all of you. I have also had to practice Patience. We all come to the table with different ideas and perspectives. We must listen to each other and be in the moment.
As Board member, you are constantly juggling these different perspectives and trying to do the best job for the residents of Fairways. Things don’t always go the way you and the Board plan and that’s where patience is really needed. I have been

fortunate to work with some very patient people and you all have been patient with me. I thank you for that.
On June 17, we will open the nominations process for the open three FHAOI Board positions. The three positions will be for two-year terms. The following is how it works:
1. If you are interested in running for one of the three open seats, please send an email to FHAOIBOARD@gmail.com with the following information:
a. Your name, address, phone number and email
b. Indicate number of years you have been at Fairways and other groups you have been involved with at Fairways
c. Short statement as to why you want to serve on the FHAOI Board and what areas of strength do you have to contribute to the Board.

At the July 11 FHAOI Board meeting, I will announce the Nominations Committee and the group will go through the nominations and first make sure the nominated folks are members of FHAOI. You must be a member of FHAOI and the voting member from your household to run for the Board. If you are not sure, please email Lois Fleming at FHAOIBOARD@gmail.com. Lois will check your FHAOI membership status and let you know.
On August 12, the nominations Committee will host an informational session for prospective board candidates. This session will take place at the Master’s Clubhouse at 7 pm. This will be your opportunity to ask questions of the committee and FHAOI Board members about being a board member.
I encourage you to think about running for an open board position or encouraging a friend or neighbor to run. It has been a great experience for me, and I have grown from it. Thanks Fairways!!! If you have any questions for me, please email me at markakornmann@gmail.com.

HTA Manager Update
Welcome to the 2024 Hurricane Season and it is predicted to be an active one. The best way to be safe during an emergency is to BE PREPARED. There are many resources and guides available to help us prepare for the hurricane season. Based on previous experiences with hurricanes, we strongly urge you to take steps to prepare for a hurricane, including creating family emergency and evacuation plans, assembling emergency supply kits, and preparing your home for high winds. To help us all prepare, Hometown will present a Hurricane Preparedness Luncheon on June 7 in the Masters Clubhouse beginning at 11:30 am. Come out to join us for lunch and take away some helpful tips to help us through this season with ease.

Summertime is Here!
Social Activities Director Update
June 1 - Here we are halfway through the year already. Our snowbirds have left for cooler temps up north and those of us left here are getting prepared for hurricane season.
The fire pit behind the Masters is working, please remember though, that the fire pit is on a timer. It will not work until after the lights around the outside patio come on.
When using the fire pit, please turn the knob on the wall in the screened room for the length of time you want it on. If you choose to leave before your time is up, do not manually turn it off, just let the timer run out on its own.
I have a request to whoever is removing the monthly calendars from the Masters Clubhouse. I would greatly appreciate it if you would leave them there so all of us can know what’s going on in the Masters during the month. Thank you.
We have a couple things going on in June:
June 3 there will be a speaker from Lincoln Heritage Life Insurance Company Funeral Advantage Plan at 1 pm. Please plan to attend if you are interested in learning about life insurance for funeral planning.
June 7 Hometown America will be hosting a hurricane preparedness informational talk at 11:30 am in the Masters Clubhouse.
June 22 Hometown America will host a Margaritaville pool party at the Masters Pool from 11 am-1 pm featuring Margaritaville Jimmy Buffett music. We will have margaritas and some food.
Please remember to reach out to my Hometown phone for any information or questions that you may have on any events. I cannot respond on Facebook. I cannot keep up with two phones, Facebook, Nextdoor, etc. and you may get overlooked. So please reach out to my Hometown work phone - 407-607-4728
Hope everyone has a safe month.

She is continuing Dr. David Jeremiah’s book, “The Great Disappearance.” The two chapters this month are “At Any Moment” and “Delivered Before Destruction.” Jolynn’s address is 14721 Firestone.

Good Life: High Blood Pressure
By Geri OssanaHalf of U.S. adults have high blood pressure, and only a quarter of them have it under control. Are you one of them? In 1997, DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), was first released. Although early participants in the fruit-and-vegetablerich diet did not lose weight, reduce salt and alcohol intake or exercise more, their blood pressures dropped significantly, as if they had taken medication to lower blood pressure. Studies proved that cutting back on salt lowered blood pressure. Salt matters a lot. The DASH diet recommends small servings with higher protein and higher unsaturated fat for good health. Be sure every day to include one serving each of poultry, or fish or lean meat, vegetables & fruit, grains, low-fat dairy, legumes & nuts, one Tablespoon of oil or fats, and only one dessert. Will it be easy to change your eating habits? Only you can find out. At least try!

Veterans Corner
By Edwin Ramirez, CommanderThe month of May was a very busy month in Fairways. We honored and remembered veterans who have passed. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten. A heartfelt appreciation goes out to all who have been here to recognize those veterans.
We are here to unify resources and create opportunities throughout the community. We also promote, support and participate in community events which bring veterans and the community together. In the month of June, we will be starting the “Helping Homeless Veterans Drive.” We are uniting with the Veterans Administration and other local organizations to help Homeless Veterans in the local area. Our intentions are to take donations of daily necessities such as toothpaste, soap, shampoo, deodorant and other items. As some of these veterans transition back into the community and to a home of their own, they will also need household items such as pots and pans, towels, cleaning supplies, and many other essentials. Donation boxes will be placed at the Greenbrier Library. If you are not able to drop off your donations, or if you have any questions, please call me at 407-913-3681.
The Fairways Veterans Group Board is looking to fill some positions. These are Events Coordinator, Media Relations and Chief Financial Officer. If you are an active Veteran Member of the group and would like to be considered for one of these positions, you can contact us. See information below.

Flag Day is a celebration of the American flag that occurs each year on the anniversary of the flag’s official adoption, June 14. What we know fondly as the “Stars and Stripes” was adopted by the Continental Congress as the official American flag on June 14, 1777, during the Revolutionary War. Colonial troops fought under many different flags with various symbols—rattlesnakes, pine trees, and eagles— and slogans—” Don’t Tread on Me,” “Liberty or Death,” and “Conquer or Die,” to name a few. If you want a flag replaced, you can contact us, and we will replace your flag for free. Please remember to take the U.S. flag down and bring it in during inclement weather.
