Gratitude in Full Swing:

thank you to our golfers, sponsors & volunteers

Celebrating the Resounding Success of Our Golf Tournament

The greens were pristine, the weather was perfect, and the camaraderie was unmatched—our Golf Gala Tournament on November 8th was not only a fun yet competitive display of talent but, most importantly, a true testament to the spirit of our community. As organizers, we are filled with immense gratitude for everyone who made this event such a remarkable success.

Thank You, Golfers!

To all the golfers who participated, your enthusiasm and sportsmanship set the tone for an exciting day on the course. Whether you were sinking birdies or perfecting your swing, your positive energy and competitive spirit made the tournament enjoyable for all. It was inspiring to see players of all skill levels come together, fostering new friendships and memorable moments. Your dedication and passion are what make our event so special year after year.

Our Sponsors: The Driving Force Behind Our Success

No event of this magnitude is possible without the generous support of our sponsors. Your commitment and contributions ensured that every aspect of the tournament—from the welcome kits to the awards ceremony—ran seamlessly. Your partnership not only enhanced the event experience but also fueled our shared mission to bring the community together and support worthy causes. We are proud to be associated with organizations and individuals who share our values of excellence and generosity.

Special Thanks and Looking Ahead

We also extend our heartfelt appreciation to the volunteers and staff who worked tirelessly behind the scenes. Your presence and support added warmth and excitement to the tournament atmosphere.

As we reflect on this year’s achievements, we look forward to building on this momentum for the 2026 Golf Gala on Saturday, November 7, 2026. With your continued support and participation, we are confident that our next event will be even more memorable.

Thank you once again to our talented golfers and outstanding sponsors. You are the true champions of our tournament, and we can’t wait to see you on the green next year!

From Your FHAOI President

Congratulations Vicki. I sure hope you mostly enjoy being the FHAOI President. I am quite sure Fairways will welcome you in this new role and support you along the way. All the best to you!”

I’m taking a page from Mark Kornmann’s handbook and using my last article as the FHAOI Board President to introduce you to Vicki Heath, who will be your 2026 Board President. So here we go:

Cathy: You told me a resident asked you what experience you have to be able to take on being the FHAOI Board President! So briefly share some of the experience you bring with you.

Vicki: Each group I have worked with is uniquely different. I worked as a church secretary for 20 years with lots of different people and groups. I think if you know your own strengths and weaknesses then you can communicate what you need help with and get it.

Cathy: I know you and Ed have been married over 50 years. Is he prepared to support you in this new venture (or should I say adventure)?

Vicki: Yes, we talked about what this position would likely entail. He is very supportive and will help when needed.

Cathy: That’s great. I know Jim has been a great sounding board for me and has helped quite a bit.

Cathy: What do you hope to accomplish as the new President?

Vicki: It is not just what I want to accomplish, but what this Board can work to accomplish. The focus should be on getting more of our community involved and listening to them.

Cathy: I couldn’t agree more. I wish you much success with your vision.

Cathy: What are some activities you enjoy doing, not just in Fairways but in general?

Vicki: We like to camp; we have an RV and like to visit different places. I like to read and play cards. I enjoy traveling to visit friends and family whenever I can.

Cathy: Let me prepare you for the numerous phone calls you will sometimes receive from residents with all sorts of questions or issues they hope you and the Board can fix. Do you consider yourself a “people” person, who will listen and try to assist if possible?

Vicki: I am prepared to accept all incoming questions from residents. I will listen and I will help in anyway I can, or refer them to someone who may be able to help them. Sometimes people just want you to hear them out and I am willing to do that.

Cathy: I have to say I really did enjoy most of the phone calls. And you are right; many people just want to be heard.

Cathy: I’ve had you join me and Nancy Lang in our monthly meetings with Priscilla, and you’ve said you enjoy doing that. Do you plan to continue to meet with Priscilla and is there anything you hope to accomplish that so far, we haven’t had any luck with?

Vicki: I think it is important to continue these meetings. You have been able to get some things done during your term as President and we need this line of communication open. I will take whatever wins we can get big or small. I want to keep communications open.

Cathy: Congratulations Vicki. I sure hope you mostly enjoy being the FHAOI President. I am quite sure Fairways will welcome you in this new role and support you along the way. All the best to you!!!

Statutory Meeting Highlights

The annual Statutory Meeting was held on Wednesday, December 12, 2025 at 10:00am in the Masters Conference Room.

In attendance were Priscilla Herrick, Hometown America Manager; Gena Paugh, Hometown America Regional Manager; Cathy Nanfeldt, FHAOI Board President, Vicki Heath, Director-at-Large & Incoming FHAOI Board President for 2026; and Nancy Lang, Secretary.

I opened the meeting by introducing Vicki Heath, the President-Elect for FHAOI in 2026, to Gena Paugh.

I then thanked Gena for providing documentation and justification for the lot increase beginning January 1, 2026, prior to today’s meeting. The documentation was thorough and covered a handful of surrounding communities where lot rent is easily the same if not more in comparison to Fairways. They also showed that items such as cable and water in some instances are not included. For example, Palm Valley residents must pay for water and sewage where we do not unless it is over 3,000 gallons per month.

We inquired if any road improvements were scheduled for 2026. They said each year they repair/repave different areas based on need. They would not state which road is being considered at this time.

I’ve received complaints about ant hills and neglected trash pick up at the dog park. We were told this has already been addressed. The dirt mounds were closely inspected and were not from red ants or any ants, but likely from sandhill cranes digging for food. There were some ants in the trash area and those were sprayed. We brought up the cart paths and were told those are always on the list to be maintained. We specifically brought up hole #11 and hole #6, both of which are in terrible shape.

I was happy to report that I received a thumbs up from a resident who has been complaining for months about the state of the lake, especially around hole #14.

It appears the ongoing efforts to clear them up along with help from mother nature have finally worked.

We discussed the front gates which were finally fixed but now are again not working. It is extremely frustrating, and we honestly did not receive any positive news on the subject.

There has recently been a lot of chatter on social media about the new sewage plant and the fact that there is still a significant odor. Residents living near the plant were most hopeful once rebuilt that the smell would be gone. Although there are checks and balances to keep the odor to a minimum, there are times where it is inevitable.

We brought up the recent replacement of the plastic trim in the masters around the carpet and dance floor. We looked at it and thankfully both Priscilla and Gena agree that it is a tripping hazard and the vendor who installed it will be brought back to come up with a better solution before someone trips and falls.

There is still some work to do with the audio system in the masters. We spoke about the speakers and wireless microphones. Let’s all keep our fingers crossed that a viable solution and fix occurs soon.

The bleachers at the bocce courts were once again a topic. As they are now, they are way too low to the ground and extremely difficult for us seniors to use. We asked again about removing them and putting the picnic tables purchased in 2025 under that awning. Gena was agreeable with this, so we look forward to that happening. We also asked about overhead covers to be added where the players are to protect them – much like the shuffleboard courts. I feel there is a good chance of something happening with this wish as well.

I hope this summary of our meeting is useful to our residents. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for your support during my tenure as FHAOI Board President. Your comments and appreciation meant a lot to me.

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas!

It’s difficult to believe that we are in the last month of 2025 and Fairways is ready to celebrate the holidays.

“Kicking off the season of Hometown America celebrations, Mark from the Chrome 57 Band will lead community caroling with a short parade on December 1 at 6 p.m. from the Triangle where the community holiday tree is and will end at the Masters for the concert,” Johnny Cutsinger, Hometown co-social director, said.

At the Masters, the caroling music will last until 8 p.m. hot cider and cookies will be served.

“On December 5, we will host our annual Hometown America Holiday Luncheon. Tickets have been distributed, and the food count has been submitted, Barb Mishloney, cosocial director, said. If your plans have changed and you cannot attend, please contact either me or Johnny so we can accommodate those on the waiting list.”

NOVEMBER HIGHLIGHTS

On Veterans Day, November 11, Hometown American celebrated our Fairways Veterans with a luncheon. Thanks to Veteran, Edwin Ramiiriz , for leading the Pledge of Allegiance.

“We are so grateful for resident Jim Creighton who wrote a beautiful letter about what it means to be a Veteran and how the community is also focused on service to others,” Johnny said.

“To celebrate, the Fairway’s Tappers performed patriotic songs for Veterans and their guests.”

Tappers Letizia Morales, Suzanne Hammons and Rebecca Droughwell are choreographed and led by Mary Lee Notley.

A big shout out to Shadow and Roberta Girard, Mary Tatro for always being there to help as well as Tim Barber, Scott Glover and Curt Mottram for helping reset tables and clean up after the luncheon.

During November, the Masters patio firepit has been refurbished and is ready for use by residents. “It is still on a timer which must be allowed to turn off naturally. Users should not force it off as it will damage the timer” Barb explained.

A new cover now protects the pit when not in use. Keeping the pit protected

Veterans Corner

November was a month of hope and giving back. We celebrated and honored our veterans with a Brick Laying Ceremony and Quilts of Valor presentation on Friday. November 14th. We were also blessed and thankful in spending time with family and friends in fellowship in celebration of Thanksgiving.

Veterans Day Celebration:

Special thanks to our Fairways Country Club manager, Priscilla Herrick, who has always been a strong supporter of our veterans, for once again hosting a wonderful luncheon for the Fairways veterans and their plus one. It was a time in when all Fairways veterans came together and were recognized for serving this wonderful nation. Thank you to HTA staff and the volunteers who helped make it happen!

Fourth Annual Pre-Thanksgiving Potluck:

Thank you to everyone who participated in our Annual Thanksgiving Potluck. As always it was a great event for all Fairways residents. We had a variety of food provided by our residents and the Fairways Veterans Group. A special thanks to Deb Gunter who has volunteered in coordinating the event for the fourth straight year. In addition, Suzanne Hammons and Sherri Holley contributed in the logistics of all the decorations, the setting up and cleanup afterwards. We cannot forget that in the background we also had many more volunteers who helped, and we appreciate you and extend our warm thanks.

Commanders Thoughts:

There are several ways to help during the holiday season, including getting involved in a Veterans holidays program, donating, or even adopting a family. But there are many ways we can embrace the holidays. Reaching out to the Veteran community is a simple way we can cherish the meaning of Fellowship. There are many people who deserve the same kindness and treatment we all seek.

Christmas Cards To Veterans I challenge all our wonderful Fairways residents to ‘send’ a Holiday card to a veteran. Get them to me by Wednesday December 17th.

I will be taking them to the VA Medical Center in Lake Baldwin and Lake Nona on Thursday December 18th for distribution. There are veterans who are in the hospital and assisted living facilities, and many are without families. Let’s help bring a little joy to them during this time. Call me at 407-913-3681 for more information.

Rock n Roll Club Toy Drive Another Success!

Thank you to everyone who came out to the Club’s 2025 Christmas Toy Drive Dance on Saturday, November 15th. The Club raised $1,000 in cash and gift cards and over 300 toys were donated to help make Christmas special for many children in East Orlando.

Thank you to all!

Fairways Sewing Group Update

The sewing group would like to thank all the people who stopped by to see us during the Craft Sale in October. Thank you also to those who have donated material, thread, and ribbons to make numerous items for different projects. If you would like to donate material, you can drop it off or call Donna Dale at 561-818-1354 or Sue Creighton at 321-663-2371.

In the last two months, we have been busy making Seat Belt protectors. They were donated to cancer patients to protect their chest ports. We have also donated six Chemo hats for current cancer patients.

Life Care on Rouse Rd. was given 8 lap blankets. Life Care just reopened after being closed for over a year due to the flooding of their facility.

We were asked to make 50 Christmas stockings to be delivered to the Mega Church on Dean Road. Some of our material was used to make colorful placemats that were given to Meals on Wheels.

If you would like to join us, we are at the Greenbrier Club House on Wednesday mornings from 8:30 until 11:00. If you can’t sew, that’s ok. We need people who can iron, cut out patterns, and sort material.

We wish you all a Blessed Christmas and New Year.

Fight for the Cure Update!

As promised, the total for the Fight for the Cure: Including the Fairways Veterans Group raising $1,747.00 and Bill Ruth auctioning a round of golf for four at Heathrow, Libby’s Legacy received a total of $11,532.00 from the supporters of this event.

Again, my heartfelt thanks to all who supported our efforts and gave numerous people the opportunity to survive this disease. Until next year - THINK PINK!

Fight for the Cure – some more information on how Fairways got involved and some clarification on the Bingo article in the November Eagle. The Fight for the Cure started here in Fairways when Dottie Ramsdell’s daughter was diagnosed with cancer. Dottie started this event to raise money for a cure. Her daughter is a survivor, and in the past has attended this tournament.

This tournament is ongoing, not to keep Dottie’s memory alive, it will never die for those of us who knew her, but to continue raising funds to find the cure for this awful disease. It is my privilege to continue the tournament she started and held so dear to her heart. It would not be possible without the generous people in the Fairways community.

Merry Christmas Everyone!!

Let’s not forget the reason we celebrate this time of year, not to get presents or see Christmas lights, but because Jesus Christ was born.

Our Praise and Prayer time is on Saturday, December 6th, at 11 am. Roseanne Alvino is hosting. Her address is 14627 Firestone. There is breakfast potluck after. Please call Roseanne at 239691-3215 to see what you can bring.

Celebrating Fairways Volunteers!

All the events and activities that happen in Fairways are run on volunteers! Many of them. On Sunday, November 16, FHAOI hosted the Annual Volunteer Lunch with over 100 personally invited, and we had approximately 55 in attendance. We had Dustin’s BarBQ cater for us, and everyone enjoyed the wonderful food, including a cake and mini cheesecake bites.

Each year the FHAOI names a volunteer or volunteers of the year, and the recognition was given to Steve and Bonnie Buyea for 2025. Steve not only shares his talent and patience of capturing the wonderful wildlife in Fairways and beyond (with Bonnie providing witty and educational commentary to the photos), but Steve also volunteers at our events and takes the awesome shots that we post in the Eagle and online. Thank you both Steve and Bonnie! The FHAOI appreciates you and your talents. We hope you enjoy a relaxing dinner at Cooper’s Hawk. You deserve it.

And the following written by Bonnie Buyea –We could not have said it better. Thank you!

Dear Volunteers and FHAOI Members,

I want to express my deepest gratitude to each of you for the time, energy, and heart you pour into our community throughout the year. Every event we host — big or small —is made possible because of your dedication and willingness to step forward. Your efforts create the warmth, connection, and sense of belonging that make our community truly special.

A very special thank-you to the FHAOI for hosting today’s volunteer luncheon. Your kindness and generosity made the day not only enjoyable, but also a meaningful reminder of how important our volunteers are. The lunch was a wonderful opportunity to come together, reflect on all we’ve accomplished, and celebrate the people who make it happen.

To all our volunteers: thank you for showing up, for giving your time, and for supporting our events with such enthusiasm. You help build the spirit of our community, and we are sincerely grateful.

Line Dancing

L

ine dancing these days are not just a bunch of cowboys and cowgirls in a line kicking up their boots! In fact, if a western line dancer saw what we do on Tuesdays at 4 o’clock at the Masters, they would not recognize the dancing nor the music. We dance to a different drummer!

This is no longer the bar dances this is FUN DANCING!! It’s moving our feet, improving our balance and getting our heart rate up a little more than when we sit on the couch. So, if you wish to add a few more months to your life, if you want to lose a few pounds… you are invited to come on out to theMasters at 4pm on Tuesday afternoons and FUN DANCE with us.

Join Us for Chair Exercise

Now is the time to consider New Year’s resolutions that make a difference. As you plan your 2026 activities, put that better health resolution into action on Saturday mornings at 9 a.m. at the Fairways Fitness Club’s Chair Exercise Class in the Masters.

Led by exercise and Zumba specialist Giselle Bellorin, the class is designed for all levels of exercise ability.

“What makes this class so special is that anyone can do all of it or part of it to strengthen your ability to move as well as stretch your muscle groups. And Gigi plays the best music. What could be better?”

President Lisa Ramsey said. Exercisers use light pound weights, stretch bands and balls to enhance the body improvement strategies.

“What’s cool about it is that you can sit or stand for exercises and pace the work out for your comfort level,” participant, John Cutsinger, said. “It’s a great community activity that everyone would benefit from. And don’t forget your towel and water.”

Each Saturday morning session only costs $5 for the hour-long training. For more information, call Lisa at 423-552-2060.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

The Singles Club will celebrate the holidays on December 7 at 4:00 pm at the Masters Clubhouse. We will have tickets for this years celebration and you can get them from Suzanne Hammons. Contact her at 407-616-5006. In consideration of this busy time of year, we will not have dinner on the third Thursday of the month. Our card games on Saturdays at the Greenbriar will continue at 6 pm. Suzanne Hammons will be retiring as president of the Singles Club. Sherri Holley will assume the responsibilities of president, with Sue Kelsey helping with the set up for the Saturday card games.

We at the Singles Club wish everyone in our community a wonderful holiday season, and a happy new year.

Golf Tournament Renamed Reinhardt Fall Ball Open Tournament & Gala

The Reinhardt Fall Ball Open Tournament and Gala

Scheduled for November 7, 2026!

The FHAOI announces the renaming of the annual Golf Tournament and Gala in honor of Steve Reinhardt. Steve has been instrumental in building the success of this annual event and it is fitting that it will now be named after him.

“Let me first say no words can express my sincere thanks to the Golf Committee and the FHAOI for renaming the Fall Ball Golf Tournament in my honor after the work I did to help create this event and build it to the success it now is,” Steve said.

“I want to acknowledge the hard work that has been done by so many people to help this cause, and the tournament could not happen without a very dedicated team including Tim and Karen Barber, Scott Glover, Curt and Shelly Mottram, and Mark Kornmann, plus many more who contributed knowledge, time and energy to make it a success.

“I especially want to thank all the golfers who believed in us that first year and continue to support the tournament and the FHAOI.

Simply put – thank you!

The FHAOI looks forward to welcome golfers, sponsors, volunteers, and Fairways residents to the 2026 event.

Pickleball

Pickleball enthusiasts have been hitting the Fairways courts for friendly competition on weekday nights at 6:30 p.m.

Daily Facebook postings by Lisa Ramsey call for players who plan on playing each evening. Everyone of any level is welcome.

“We have people who have never played before to those who have experience,” Michael Walker, resident, said. ”What makes it great is that we are there for a fun time while improving our play. I only started a few months ago and now I can hold my own with the better players.”

Play at the courts next to the Pro Shop usually lasts 1-3 hours depending on players’ availability.

“There are usually extra paddles so if you just want to try it out, you can borrow a paddle and hit the courts,” player John Cutsinger said. “I am, at best, an average player. I learned so much in the few months I have been playing.

Each Monday-Thursday, there are anywhere from four to 12 players. Teams rotate so everyone gets to play at least two games a night.

For more information, text John Cutsinger at 407-680-8249.
