ROCKTHEAROUND CLOCK!

On Saturday, July 20, FHAOI and MetroHealth sponsored a Sock Hop at the Masters.

MetroHealth supplied the rocking DJ for the night while the kitchen kept hopping churning out cheeseburger sliders and French fries with a milk shake bar.

Thank you to ALL the volunteers for your help and everyone who went all out donned in 50’s outfits. The Pink Ladies and poodle skirts were plentiful for sure. The audience chose the best dressed couple and individual by round of applause and MetroHealth awarded gift cards to the winners. Best dressed couple went to Johnny Cutsinger and Michael Walker and best dressed individual was won by Nick LaRoche.

There was a Hula hoop contest with a few brave souls giving it their best shot. Angie Artymowycz brought her professional Hula hoop and did fantastic during practice but missed a swing and was out. It came down to Mark Kornmann and Rosemary Wozencroft, who

bested the Prez to claim victory. The floor was full for the fastest hand jive this side of Milwaukee!

Just for fun, I typed in to Google, “create an AI poem using song titles for a 50’s Sock Hop” and it came back within a minute with the following: At the Hop, we danced all night, To Rock Around the Clock, what a sight!

Jailhouse Rock had us in a spin, With Great Balls of Fire, the fun would begin. Blueberry Hill was where we found love, Only You and me, like stars above. Lollipop sweetened our every kiss, In the magic of the night, pure bliss.

Chantilly Lace and a pretty face, Come Go With Me, let’s leave this place. That’ll Be The Day, we said goodbye, But memories of the hop will never die. Special thanks to Steve Buyea for all the great photos!

Now that’s Worth Celebrating!

There was a special anniversary dance at the Sock Hop and couples were eliminated based on years married. The last couple standing was Carroll and Audrey Comeaux! Congratulations to the happy couple who have been married for 60 years.

If you’re interested in knowing more about being a FHAOI Board Member, please join us for an informational meeting on August 12th at 7 p.m. at the Masters!

Just returned home from the Sock Hop!Fairways really showed up! The Sock Hop outfits were amazing, and the DJ did a great job with the music. We had a full dance floor down to the last song!! Thanks to everyone who attended, those that volunteered and my co-chair Debbie Yeagley, and to MetroHealth for their sponsorship. It was a great night!

FHAOI Events

This month, we will be hosting Dueling Pianos on Saturday, August 17. Tickets are on sale for $15 and you can get them on Wednesdays from 5-9 p.m. at the Masters Clubhouse. Tickets will also be available at the door.

We are finalizing the sponsor list for our November 9 Golf Tournament. If you know someone – whether an individual or a business – who would benefit from the Fairways community knowing about them, invite them to consider being a sponsor for our golf tournament. They can sponsor part of the evening or one of the holes. It’s a great day, great exposure for that company or individual and their business – we have 36 teams/144 players signed up – and a good way to give back to Fairways.

Please Consider Joining the FHAOI Board! It is also the time of year that we are looking for residents to step up and be a part of the FHAOI Board Elections. This year, we have three positions on the board open. They are two-year terms. If you are interested or you want to know more about the Board, please contact me at markakornmann@gmail.com or call me at 202-615-7603. I will be selecting a nominations committee this month that will oversee the election process.

Thank you HTA!

I want to take some time to thank HTA for the new shuffleboard courts and the update to the tennis and pickleball courts. They added some fresh paint and I have noticed more people using the pickleball courts.

Last but Not Least …

I do want to take a second and thank all of my fellow board members. Everyone is working so hard to make sure we have great events and that we are watching out for the residents of Fairways. You all have supported me as President as we have moved through this year. THANK YOU!!!

There is a lot to be thankful for in Fairways and I really count you all as one of those things I am thankful for this season. The residents of Fairways are always willing to help, and you have taken the time to show up for the Board meetings and FHAOI events—THANK YOU!!!

t’s that time of year!! Your Fairways Homeowners Association is looking for people to join the FHAOI Board. We have three openings for the 2025 year and these positions are for two-year terms. To apply for one of the board seats, please do the following:

1. Send an email to FHAOIBOARD@gmail.com with your name, address, phone number and email.

2. Indicate how long you have lived in Fairways and any groups you have been involved with and/or supported.

3. Include in the email a short statement as to why you want to serve on the FHAOI Board and indicate your areas of strength you can contribute to the Board.

We will have an informational meeting on August 12 at 7pm at the Masters.

Join The FHAOI Team!

Many residents have let the FHAOI Board know that they believe it is very important for AED’s – automated external defibrillators – to be stationed in key areas in Fairways.

Hometown America said they did include AEDs in their budget for next year and we felt it was important to get this need met and see what we could do to get the process moving forward now, rather than waiting until 2025.

FHAOI applied to AEDGrant.com for three AEDs from their Corporate Buy-Down grants. These grants mean the AEDs would be able to be bought at about 50% of the suggested retail price. We’re looking at between $2,000 and $2,500 per AED.

We were approved and now we need to decide which equipment would be right for Fairways and how we get the funds for the special pricing offered. I welcome input from the Fairways community, and we will reach out to medical professionals and the fire department to tap into their knowledge. You can email FHAOIBoard@gmail.com with your input!

Latin American Club Updates

And just like that we are eight months into the year and at the end of the summer. Well not necessarily for us, but for those of us that come from up North, it is just about done. We at the LACF Club have been busy at work organizing events for our residents to enjoy. The Latin American Club invites you to join us for events in the month of August:

• On Friday, August 9th, LACF will be hosting a Fiesta Huracan/ Hurricane Party from 6:00 - 10:30pm. There will be food and refreshments served. There will also be DJ music, raffles, and share the wealth tickets available. In addition, we will also be providing Hurricane educational materials in preparation for our long awaited upcoming busy hurricane season. Come join the fun, without forgetting to be prepared for our hurricane season. The dress code will be beachwear attire. The ticket cost will be $10 for LACF Members and $12 for Non-Members Tickets have been on sale since Thursday 06/27, but if you don’t yet have yours, they will be available for purchase at the door. If you have any questions, please reach out to Gladys Carpena, our LACF President, at (201) 710-0753 or by email at latinamericanclub2024@gmail.com

• Free Zumba/ Water Aerobics Class being offered to our residents - Our third and last class, for now, will be held on Tuesday, August 13th at the Westchester pool at 6pm being sponsored by IMA Medical Group /Guided Solutions. Our class instructor is our very own resident chair exercise instructor Giselle. Please make sure to bring a towel, water and water shoes. Hope to see you there!

At our general member meeting on June 27th, we had 28 members in attendance, and we had three share the wealth winners. We had a Father’s day Celebration where they all received a gift from the club, in addition to celebrating all our July member’s birthdays.

Our general meetings are open to all Fairways residents and are held on the fourth Thursday of the month at 6:00pm at the Master’s Clubhouse. After a brief informational meeting we enjoyed birthday cake, and games like dominoes and bingo, and we would love to see you there.

You can reach the club at our newly revamped Facebook page at Latin American Club at Fairways (LACF) or by email at latinamericanclub2024@gmail.com.

The club President Gladys Carpena can also be contacted directly at either (201) 710-0753 or (407) 456-3091.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 9 6:00pm-10:30pm

Veterans Corner

Ambulance and fire trucks are often seen entering the Fairways community. They might come for a Wellness Check or because there has been an emergency.

At one of our recent events, a resident suffered a heart attack. Not that many people in Fairways know how to perform CPR so the Fairways Veterans are hosting a Basic CPR class on Tuesday, August 13th at 6:00pm. It will be at the Masters Clubhouse and for the Fairways residents and will be conducted by Dedicated Senior Medical Center and The Red Cross.

Those interested, please contact us via phone at 407-913-3681. Please leave a message if there is no answer. We need a head count of attendees so the sponsor will be prepared with the necessary equipment and personnel.

Our “Helping Homeless Veterans Drive” has been very successful. We have collected over three tubs of toiletry items. We will continue to collect these items and very thankful to everyone that has contributed. The Veterans Administration Medical Center in Lake Baldwin sends the Fairways community their immense gratitude for our efforts. They said there will be many veterans who will benefit.

Special thanks to Judy Smegelski and the Knights of Columbus Chapter 2112. They have supported our cause and collected toiletries for the Homeless Veterans Drive. Over 40 homeless veterans will benefit from their generosity.

We still have our “Bricks Honoring Our Veterans” campaign. For $40.00 you can order a brick to honor a veteran that you know. It can be a family member or a friend. They do not need to live in Fairways nor do they have to be deceased. We want all our Fairways residents to join us in honoring all veterans. We will need their name, branch of service, rank and years of service.

Military Calendar – Holidays, Events, Observances (August)

• August 4 - Coast Guard Birthday, which commemorates the Coast Guard’s founding in 1790

• August 7 - Purple Heart Day, which honors those who have been wounded or killed while serving in the military

Commanders Thoughts:

There has been a lot of VA information posted on the Fairways Veterans Group Facebook page by veteran George Croughwell. If any veteran or family member needs more information, we are willing to aid you in obtaining it. Towards the end of the year, we will have representatives from the VA and Tricare come in to speak about the various Health and Medical benefits that veterans and their family have. We will keep everyone informed via Facebook, Nextdoor, the TV Monitors and the Eagle newspaper. As always, our sincerest thanks to everyone for supporting the Fairways veterans.

“WOW – I can’t believe it’s August already and we are a few months into Hurricane Season. I am grateful we have been spared so far but we can’t let our guard down!

HTA Manager Update

Hometown recently held a Lunch and Learn at the Masters clubhouse on Hurricane Preparedness. We gave out some handouts with helpful information about preparing for a hurricane. Thank you to all those who attended. If you were unable to attend, stop by the office for a copy of the Hurricane Preparedness packet of information. Also thank you to all the residents that came in or called with your updated emergency numbers and correct contacts.

Laundry Facility – We are currently in final contract negotiation with a new laundry service company. I am hoping to have all the contracts agreed upon and signed within the next few weeks and the new laundry equipment installed shortly thereafter. I appreciate your patience while we complete the agreements.

Shuffleboard Courts - As you might have noticed, the shuffleboard courts are being resurfaced. The concrete has been poured and now

HTA Social Director Update

July has come and gone, and August has arrived still with the hot, hot heat we’ve had all summer and don’t see any relief. But so far, so good with no hurricane issues. Saying my prayers for a continued safe hurricane season.

A little recap of July: July 14, we had our wine and cheese social with about 50 people in attendance, which is good with the snowbirds all gone. On July 19, Hometown America sponsored something new called music bingo. There were about 75 people who attended this event. It really was a lot of fun with residents dancing in the seats while playing bingo to all the music that we all know. I plan to host this event again and I hope we get more of you out to enjoy. July 22, HTA presented a speaker on Senior Safety in the Home. It was extremely informative.

Now for August: On Monday, August 12 at 1 pm at the Masters we will host power bingo. Come on out of the heat and plan to join us. No tickets necessary.

Don’t forget Tuesday, August 20 at the Masters there will be voting for the presidential primary.

Stay cool, hydrate, and when you must be outside, keep an eye on the monitors at the mailboxes, the Greenbrier, the Westchester gym and foyer area, and also in the Pro Shop for lots of informationespecially about upcoming events.

Please remember if you need to get in contact with me, call my Hometown America phone at 407-607-4728. If I don’t answer, please leave me a message.

Thanks again for all your support. Barbara Mishloney

has to cure for 28 days, after which the new court surface can be applied, and the courts will get a fresh painting. I expect these final two steps starting in early August. Thank you for your patience as the concrete cures and the courts are not accessible.

THANK YOU - Thank you to those residents that are out working around their homes freshening up landscape and planting flowers. It looks beautiful.

Fairways Sewing Group

We may be in the middle of another heat wave, but we are still meeting in the Greenbrier Club House from 8:30 until 11:00 on Wednesday mornings.

Great news! We have a new member who has joined us. A very warm welcome Nancy Lang. It’s so great to meet new members and friends. More good news, we will be at the craft show on September 28 at the Masters, so remember to come by and visit our table.

In June our donations were 14 pillowcase dresses and 9 boys shorts

that were given to Carillon Church for their mission trip. Our sewing member Annie Ossenkop gave us 186 children’s face masks. They were donated to Faith Assembly church to be taken on several mission trips during the year. Stop in on Wednesdays to see what’s in the works and drop off your items, or if you prefer us to pick up an item you can call Donna Dale (561-818-1354) or Susan Creighton (407-382-8718).

Fairways Craft Fair and Sweet Shop!

Planning for this event is in full swing and already looks likely to be a sell-out!

Taking place on Saturday, September 28 at the Masters from 9am-2pm, the craft fair will feature an array of handcrafted items from our residents, including jewelry, candles, charming home décor and much more.

And be sure you don’t miss out on the Fairways Sweet Shop Bakery, where you can choose from a variety of sweet treats for sale including freshly baked cookies, cakes and pies.

We’re offering complimentary shuttle services to the event too. From designated parking lots for outside visitors and we pick up at your home for Fairways residents.

SEPTEMBER

More details about reservations and times will be available closer to the event date.

No need to worry about meals either; we’ve got you covered, with breakfast and lunch menu featuring breakfast sandwiches and coffee and hot dogs and chicken salad sandwiches for lunch. Final menus will be available as we get closer to the date.

Whether you’re a seasoned craft fair enthusiast or exploring for the first time, join us at Fairways Country Club for a day of discovery and delight. Mark your calendars, gather your friends and family, and make memories that support a great cause.

For more information and updates, message or Email Lois at 727-423-1717 or email FHAOIBoard@gmail.com.

We look forward to welcoming you to our Craft Fair Fundraiser—an event where every purchase makes a difference.

Is Brain Food a Thing?

Short and Sweet from the Singles Club

Happy summer! In the month of August, our dinner will be on August 4 at the Cracker Barrel in Titusville. We understand not everyone wants to drive 50, so we will meet at the Masters parking lot at 3:30 to carpool. Carpool is optional and dinner will be at 4:00 pm as usual. During the summer months, we meet on the third Thursday for dinner. We will be going to Goodfellas at 4 pm on August 22. Looking forward to seeing everyone.

August

Is there such a thing as brain food? Yes! Your brain is your nervous system’s command center, and it needs nourishment.

Food choices do make a difference! Choose the right fat. Unsaturated fats may help protect and preserve your memory, and a diet including these fats has been linked to lower rates of dementia and mild cognitive impairment. The main types and the richest sources of these are olive oil, avocados, nuts, seeds, and vegetable oils. Although these are considered brain food, they should be consumed in moderation because they’re high in calories.

Omega-3 fatty acids are a type of polyunsaturated fat. These are found in cold-water fish, such as salmon, mackerel, lake trout, herring, and sardines. Plant based sources include walnuts, flaxseed and chia seeds for great brain food. Good sources of Vitamin E - linked to improved memory and cognitive performance - are green leafy vegetables like kale, spinach as well as asparagus, almonds, and sunflower seeds and include beans, peas, lentils, nuts, quinoa, brown and wild rice.

Limit your intake of saturated and trans fats and added sugars, (read the labels on your food) to support your brain’s abilities to remember, concentrate, make decisions, and engage in functions for daily living.

Join Us As We Study

God’s Word

Here we are in the middle of our “lovely” summer weather in Florida. Come and join the ladies of the Fairways Christian Women’s Connection “inside” at two Bible study sessions. They are on Thursday, August 8th and 22nd at 2pm. Both of these studies are held at Jo Lynn Haussmann’s home, 14721 Firestone. We love meeting new ladies, so feel free to bring a friend.

Fairways Food Pantry Appreciates Your Support!

As you know, we have transitioned from bringing perishable foods into our homes to providing gift cards to our recipients. It enables those who need help to get exactly what they want and it definitely eases the operation.

Our outreach partner is the Samaritan Resource Center which serves the homeless in the area. They help approximately 80 people per day with breakfast, lunch and snacks. Please remember to pick up a case of bottled water or individually packaged snacks when you go to the grocery store. Also, small size soap, shampoo, etc. is appreciated. The drop off box is at Penny Maquire’s home, 14349 Augusta Road. If you have any questions, please email Jane Slotnick at jaslotnick5@ gmail.com or text Joy Ruggiero at 614-7434402.

We continue to serve those in need in the community and rely on the generosity of individuals like you to help us continue our efforts. We visit our recipients every month and assist them with the funds available to us and are happy to help anyone who needs it.

There are a number of fundraisers organized throughout the year and we be hosting a brisket and hotdog fundraiser after the summer during the September yard sale.

We appreciate would very much appreciate your monetary donations! Just contact Sandy or me. We don’t give cash to our recipients; everyone receives a gift card.

Thank you for your help. We couldn’t continue the program without our generous donors. Contact: Shelly Mottram at 321-388-3324 Or Sandy Dennis 414-477-1925

The Italian Stallion Strikes Again

Gene Palermo, former member of the South Philly Mickey’s Boxing Gym, was playing in The Avery Group on Friday, July 12 when he delivered a knockout punch to the golf course.

Gene Gene the Dancing Machine, as he was known in the ring due to his boxing style, was playing with Dick Avery and some guy named Ben, and according to Gene he was “carrying the team on his shoulders “ when they arrived at the 6th hole a short but treacherous par 3 playing at 106 yards on this day. Gene pulled out his 5 wood and lined his ball up down the cart path on the left and let loose with his patented Palermo Punch. The ball started left looking as though it was going into the water but mid-flight it took a right-hand turn landed on the green and found its way into the safety of the cup. This was Gene’s fifth hole in one at Fairwavs leaving only the 12th hole to complete the cycle.

Residents know Gene as the Compliance Officer for Hometown America so if you see him driving around your house in the blue 4-seater golf cart run out and congratulate him and he may not write you up for a violation.

20 Time Club Champion Does It Again

On a miserably hot June 25th morning, Lester Barron, playing in The Carpenter Group, was on the 14th hole, a reachable par 5, in two shots. He lined up his 25 foot eagle putt and struck the ball pure to find the hole. As he walked off the green he was overheard saying, “Well, what can I do to follow that up?” His teammates didn’t have to wait long to find out!

Hole number 15 was playing at 98 yards that day and the pin was tucked close to the back edge of the green, a very awkward position due to the undulating slope and not a position your average player would attempt to go at. But Lester Barron is not your average player. Lester pulled out his PXG Gap wedge, addressed his Taylor Made golf ball, and took his usual ¾ knockdown swing. As the ball was in flight, Lester shouted to his ball, “SIT DOWN” as he thought he caught the ball thin. Well it must have heard him and the ball landed left of the hold and one hopped right into the cup.

It was truly a sight to witness as this was only his second hole in one of his 50 plus years of playing. And to add to that day, he shot a 2 under par round of 68 much to the delight of his teammates who rode him around the course like an old horse.

As is tradition, Lester bought a round of drinks for everyone in the Pro Shop and even had money left over to get something from the dollar menu at McDonalds.

New

to Fairways & New to Golf

Melanie Klements Scores a Hole-in-One!

Patti Singleton and I recently moved into Fairways and we live on the 5th fairway. I have never played a game of golf and wanted to try this out and see how I like it. Well, I have the best neighbors and they let me use their extra set of clubs.

I have been playing in the scramble the last four Sundays. And on 7/14 on the 8th hole, I hit a great T shot. My eyes were closed and then suddenly my teammates started yelling ‘hole in one’! What an incredible feeling and I hope to do it again.

We have a great group of people here and that is one of the reasons I have enjoyed playing.
