Social Events Roundup
By Eileen Holmes, FHAOI Social DirectorThe Poker Run 2024 was a Huge Success!
The FHAOI held their 4th Annual Poker Run on March 9 and over a hundred players participated. The “I Spy” game of gathering the names of movies in addition to your playing cards saw golf carts riding all over the streets trying to finish up before the deadline. It was a lot of fun and once again thanks to all the volunteers who came together to make it a great event.
On March 15, FHAOI and MetroHealth sponsored a senior painting event that saw around 25 people working hard and having fun painting their butterflies. Dr. Stephen Quaning gave a short talk, and tours of the medical bus were given along with a free lunch.
Our next event is April 6 with a free pancake breakfast for all and MetroHealth here again for a Sock Hop and Talent Show. The events start at 8 am and goes until 1 pm.
New residents are invited to meet the Board and have an opportunity to ask questions and hear more about living in Fairways on April 7 from 2-4 pm at the Masters.
Keep your calendars marked for May 25 for a pool party! More information will be available next month as well as on the TVs and Facebook.

THE LUCK OF THE IRISH
By Scott GloverGood luck was running rampant on St. Paddy’s Day during the putting competition at the Fairway’s putting green.
Over 60 people competed for prizes and bragging rights as the Best Putter at Fairways and the competition was tight.
Pat Jennings won the women’s division under the supervision of her husband and caddie John Jennings with a score of 100. Debbie Keltner, The Shuffleboard Queen and mother of Shannon Hidecki Keltner, who never had a club in her hands before scored a blazing 70 points to claim 2nd place.

The men’s division was a hotly contested affair with an early surprise leader, the grandson of Fostoria CC champion Curt Mottram and the 2022 and 2023 FHAOI Invitational champion Shelly Mottram.
5-year-old Cash McKee was calling his shots and taking dead aim at the center 50 point hole and sank two putts in a row till he decided he was done and wanted to get something to eat. Hours passed after Cash had posted his score and John Gondek, a local resident, took his turn and scored 100 points with his three putts. Upon being told he was tied for the lead his big grin turned into a frown when he

If you moved into Fairways between August of 2023 and April of this year –we invite you to join the FHOAI Board at the Masters Club House on Sunday, April 7 from 2-4 p.m.. Get to know your Board Members and meet other new residents! Refreshments will be served.
was told he was tied with a 5-year-old.
This is where “The Luck of the Irish” comes into play. Playing in the men’s division, Paul Rigsby’s first putt found the 30 point hole and his second putt also found the 30 putt hole giving him a combined score of 60 points, 40 points behind the leaders. With only one ball left and needing a score of 50 points to take the lead, he took dead aim and drilled it home to claim the title of Best Putter in Fairways and a final score of 110 points.
A very special thanks to all who came out and participated and made the morning a success.

In other FHAOI news, the 3rd annual FHAOI Golf Tournament and Gala is scheduled for November 9. The organizing committee had their first meeting in March.”MARK KORNMANN
A Note from the President

As we closed March out, we saw the temperature climb back into the 80’s, many clubs and the golf and bocce groups were holding their tournaments, and over 100 of you attended the Poker Run. It was great to see all of you out having a great time. Thanks to Eileen and the volunteer group for putting this together.
We also had our second Board meeting of the year in March. We had a large number of residents who came out and asked some very good questions. I hope you all found the meeting to be productive and informative. I want to offer some summary items from the meeting and some tips for all of us.
Water Allotment and Billing:
This continues to be an issue in the community. The FHAOI has asked on numerous occasions for clarification as to the number of free gallons allotted to residents. The prospectus is very clear that you should receive 3,000 gallons per month. Since last February, Hometown America has been allocating residents 100 gallons each day. Most months, this would be an advantage to the residents. But in February 2023 you received only 2,800 and in February 2024 you received 2,900. For some residents who do not normally receive a water bill, February’s decrease in free gallons allotted resulted in a water bill. According to Priscilla Herrick, this change occurred when they switched billing companies.
The other issue is the new transponders have not all been functioning properly. Some transponders did not record some daily usage. If you get a water bill, please ask for a daily usage record and make sure the transponder was recording data accurately.
Lot Rent Charges:
There continues to be confusion with the Postal Service and Hometown America in terms of delivery of lot rent checks from banks. If the normal mail carrier is off and a substitute mail carrier is filling in, the checks sometimes have been delivered to a different
address. The Postmaster has indicated this is because of the address HTA is utilizing. In most cases residents are not made aware of this until after the late penalty deadline on the 10th of the month and HTA assesses a $60 late fee. Even though this is clearly not the fault of the resident HTA has been unwilling to waive the $60 fee and residents have indicated they were told rent checks would not be accepted if the $60 late fee is not included in the new total. They have also indicated over time, the resident could be evicted. For those of you paying via bill pay or bank check, please check with the office around the 5th of the month to confirm they have received your check.
Pool Wristbands:
In March, Hometown America distributed wristbands for the pool. Residents received two wristbands per home. As a point of clarification, the wristbands were created in response to the FHAOI asking HTA for some way for residents to identify people at the pool. Over the past year, there have been a number of confrontations at the pool between residents and other individuals the resident’s thought did not belong. It was the understanding of the FHAOI, there would be rules around the wristband usage and enforcement. Given not much information went out with the wristbands, you should always make sure you have your wristband with you when you or any of your guests are at the pool. If there is an issue at the pool, please call the office and let them handle the situation. Rather than residents fighting with each other, let HTA resolve the issue.
FHAOI News:
In other FHAOI news, the 3rd annual FHAOI Golf Tournament and Gala is scheduled for November 9. The organizing committee had their first meeting in March.
In the next couple of months, we will also be accepting nominations for the three board seats that will be up for elections in October. I am very excited by your response to the Building Community Grants. We received six applications and the Board is reviewing them. Thanks to all of you for thinking about ways to improve Fairways and involve the community.
FHAOI
PRESIDENT
Q: Any update on the golf cart paths?
A: We are working on bids.
Q: Would it be possible to have a white line painted at the end of Inverary? Some residents have mentioned that because of the way the road angles it is difficult to see at night.
A: We may try to do this with the next road work project.
Q: The golfers want to know if the golf pavilion could get a bit of revamping? Specifically, they are requesting LED lights so the information on the boards can be seen more clearly. They also request an inspection to determine which areas of disrepair can be fixed.
A: Priscilla will ask Christian to look into this.
Q. If a resident did not pick up their pool wristband in March, what do they do?
A: They should call the office to schedule a pickup time. We have had a lot of people pick them up already.
Q: Is there any update with the condition of the laundromat?
A: We are looking into some refurbishment work this year.

Veterans Corner
By Edwin Ramirez, Commander, Fairways Veteran GroupMarch began with a wonderful turnout on Saturday, March 2. The Brick Laying Ceremony took place with more than 50 people in attendance. Stop by at the Fairways Veterans Memorial to see the 32 bricks currently placed by veterans, supporters and sponsors. This is an ongoing project. You will always be able to order a brick for your loved one or fellow veteran. The veteran does not have to live in Fairways and can be living or deceased.
I want to express our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Priscilla Herrick and the Hometown America staff. They have supported us from the beginning with the “Bricks Honoring Our Veterans” fundraiser campaign. Our goal is to have as many veterans represented and honored as possible. It’s a project that takes a combined effort to accomplish. I want to thank everyone who helped in putting this event together. We had help from veterans and supporters with cleaning of the area where the bricks are placed. May you all be blessed and as always, we want to thank the entire Fairways community for your support.
On Saturday, March 16, we had the return performance of Derek Diamante. He gave us a true “Country, One Man Show”. Many came to dance, listen to Derek’s fantastic voice and guitar playing again and spend some wonderful time with friends and neighbors.

Do-donuts
By Mike ScanlonFor those who are new to Fairways or just have never attended our monthly Social Get Together; the Koffee Klatch, or Coffee Social as it was named before Covid, was founded over 25 years ago by Mary Jennings Butler, as a meeting place for the residents of Fairways to talk over a cup of coffee and a donut. A few years ago, the group lost its financial backing and almost closed for good but Bill Butler and a few other residents decided to make a go of running the Coffee Social without backing and so the Koffee Klatch was born.
Elections for the board were held in January 2024; President, Mike Scanlon; Vice President, Robert Gussick, Treasurer, Edwin Ramirez, and Secretary, Letizia Morales. We meet the second Sunday of every month from 8 – 10 am at the Greenbrier. The coffee and donuts are free, but there is a sign noting that your donations are greatly appreciated with a coffee mug for tips.
The Koffee Klatch has been able to survive through the tip mug and other donations to keep it afloat.

After two years, we now have over 50 residents coming in either before or after church or just coming to spend the two hours talking, joking, and laughing. There are NO religious, social, or political views spoken here, just neighbors socializing. We also have new resident info and a gift.
Next second Sunday of the month stop by, have a donut and a cup of coffee, and enjoy. See you there, DO-donuts Mike Scanlon.
Fairways Men’s Golf Association
The league’s Ryder Cup Tournament run by Jeff Renkenberger was held on Thursday March 14th and concluded on Saturday March 16th. The two teams included the National versus the American Team. The American Team got off to an early 5-point lead picking up 7.5 points Thursday, which they continued to build on into Saturday picking up an additional 8 points for a total to 13.5 points total out of a possible 20 to win the tournament.
Congratulations to the winning team that included Dick Avery; Bud Boney, Greg Breslin; Willie Meardith; Tom Roberts; Kurt Schmal; Brian Shaw; Juan Villegas; Patrick Wagner and Jim Wood. The $200 prize money was split evenly by the team and all the members of both teams enjoyed lunch provided by Dick Avery. Thanks Dick!

The club will host its annual Red, White and Blue Scramble Tournament the first Thursday in April with a pizza luncheon for the members to follow.

The temperatures are heating up and Hurricane season is fast approaching. Now would be a great time to start preparing. Do you have fresh batteries and emergency supplies?

THE HOMETOWN INVITATIONAL was so much fun and what a great day to be on the golf course. I had the best job that day because I was driving the beverage cart in the beautiful weather and talking to all the golfers. Congratulations to our first-place winners, Colleen Fraizer, Shannon Keltner, Ed Hux and Patti Chiappetti. The 50/50 winner was Becky True. Thank you for all your support and thank you, Hometown, for such a fun event.

Rocking ‘n’ Rolling
By Mike ScanlonRock n Roll Club is moving and grooving in 2024. Our goal for membership was 180 members and we have already passed that goal. The attendance goal was an average of 125 per dance and we have an average of over 150 attendees per dance.
This is great considering the Club operates under the same guidelines of a dance once a month with a live band and we do not serve food or drinks.
The Club has been around for over 40 years and the last price increase was in the 90’s, going to the current cost for a member’s ticket to $5. Membership hasn’t gone up either, it is still $5 annually.
The board in place now started in 2023 and has added two new bands to the rotation. We continue to look for bands to add to the list. We also added a door prize of a $50.00 Gift Card and continue the Share the Wealth. In the fall at the November Dance, we will have the Rock n Roll Club’s Annual Charity Christmas Toy Drive; last year collecting over 350 Toys and over $700.00 in Cash and Gift Cards. It was an overwhelming success and so rewarding.
We will continue to work to bring Great Bands in a fun atmosphere for the residents of the Fairways Country Club to enjoy. We are open to suggestions; contact Mike Scanlon, President @ mscan6121@gmail.com.
The Hometown America Invitational golf outing on February 28 was so much fun. It was perfect weather for a day of golf.
The winners were: Ed Hux, Patti Chiappetti, Colleen Frazer, and Shannon Keltner.

Priscilla always holds a share the wealth raffle with the proceeds going to Alzheimer’s Research. This year’s goal was $1,000.00. We were $49.00 short of that goal and our own Jim Dunham stepped up to help us reach that goal. It is the most that we have ever raised. A huge Thank you to Jim. We also had lots of raffle prizes and lunch was provided.
April brings the Big Red Bus into our community so that we can donate blood. The Bus will be by the laundromat on April 24 from 9:00 am until 2:00 pm.
Since I am just returning from England, that is all that I have planned for April. I am planning a Memorial Day picnic in May. Details to follow. Watch the TVs and Facebook for information.
Have a fabulous April!

There will be a costume contest so wear your most festive Mexican outfit!

Trying to Eat Well?
It can be confusing …
By Geri OssanoWould it surprise you to know that when it comes to food and supplements, confusion abounds?
“Sugar feeds cancer”, and “Low-carb diets can starve cancer and help people live longer.” Many myths have a kernel of truth in them. “Tumors really like sugar, so if I don’t eat sugar, I won’t feed cancer.” But it is hard to prove that a low-carb (keto) diet slows or stops cancer. Most trials to prove this are inconclusive. 23 trials of a keto diet (low carb) have not proven to be perfect. A low-carb diet may cause people to lose weight too rapidly. If comfort food is sweet and offers help, don’t deny it to a person who finds it comforting. (Keto diet cancer videos on Tik Tok have recently been withdrawn due to misleading information.)

Also, with food and supplements, older adults are at greater risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer – as well as health conditions related to changes in muscle and bone mass, such as osteoporosis. The good news is that you can lessen some of these risks by eating nutrient-dense foods and maintaining

an active lifestyle. Some examples of nutrient-dense foods include salmon, kale, garlic, potatoes, berries, eggs, dark chocolate, beans, tofu and nuts and seeds. Source: health.gov/news

“Bruce Trenary” (not his real name,) a Fairways resident and witness protection participant, carded a hole in one while playing in the Mixed League on Sunday, March 3.
Bruce, as he prefers to be called, playing in a group with Jolly Gerry Mosier, Laura Mercado and “Bruce’s” beautiful wife, Cheryl-Lynn (not her real name) carded his second career hole in one on hole #15 at a distance of almost 100 yards. “Bruce” flushed a sand wedge and the ball carried to the back edge of the green and spun back 30 feet to find the center of the hole.
Bruce, who consistently hits drives of over 350 yards, was destined for a career in professional golf before he became a state witness and relocated to The Fairways from his home state of Colorado.
Should you happen to bump into Theodore Oglethorpe, Bruce’s real name, feel free to congratulate him, just make sure you call him Bruce.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the courtship process for the state’s more than one million alligators begins in April. Mating then happens in May or June before females build a nest and deposit about 32 to 46 eggs. After 63 to 68 days of incubation, the eggs will hatch from mid-August through early September.

The Sunshine Lady Reports!
By Ronnie Tricoche-GriffinI keep track of residents in Fairways who are sick, hospitalized, or could simply use a little pick me up by sending them a card. I also send sympathy cards to families who have lost loved ones, including their precious “fur” babies. I’ve become known as the Sunshine Lady. Some of the names may be duplicated because it is a two-month report for January and February 2024 and some of the residents may still be sick or got sick again. I usually read off this list at the FHAOI Board Meetings and had to miss the first meeting of the year.
I sent out 24 Get Well cards. Here are the names: Pat Agrillo, Nora Brendle, Jo Ann Lee, Shelly Mottram, Dennis Nasierowski, Winnie Desfosses, Jo Lynn Haussmann, Juana Pasco, Michael Candal, Millie Cooke, Diane Ryan, Pat Fricker, Claire Sourwine, Ken Duffy, Jerry Johnson, Greg Branham, Larry Hysong, Michael Candal, Pat Agrillo, Stanley Deprior, Janet Scanlon, Shirley Aponte, Suzanne Hammons, and Winnie Desfosses.

I sent out 10 Sympathy cards.
The names include:
Carol Ann Kaptain Family, Lois Fleming Family (fur baby), Claire McClaughin Family, Karen Farmer Family, Richard Sussan Family (2 fur babies), Fran Archibald Family, Sandy LeBu Family, Gary Condon Family, Edward/Elizabeth Perdue Family (fur baby), and Jane Bailey (fur baby).

I sent out 16 Thinking of You cards. The names are: John Colbert, Betty Bell, Shirley Aponte, Linda Soto, Richard Sussan Family, James Williamson, Angelina Lagos, Yolanda Puig, Skeeter Sales, Jo Lynn Haussmann, Lorna Casteleiro, Jane Bailey, Polly DeSormier, Becky Candal, Ellie Armstrong, and Johnny Cutsinger.

By Gary CessnaOur second annual fun day/hot dog/bocce ball tournament was held on Saturday, February 24 and was a great success!
I want to thank the scorekeepers, Cindy McGrath and Judy Michalski, and the cooks, Jill Cochell and Toni Ducharme. They all did an outstanding job. Thanks to all who contributed food and desserts for the event. Nobody went home hungry!

The winning team, with 61 points, was Brad Weeks, Penny Maguire, Phil Priolo and Angie Artymowycz.
The second-place team, with 59 points, was Karen Padot, Donna Dale, Jim McGrath and John Wozencroft.
The third-place team, with 58 points, was Kevin Keplinger, Dale Wood, Philip Priolo and Ken Gustafson.
I also want to thank Jim McGrath for the wonderful pictures.
