1980'S

86 YEARS OF TASTE-MAKING HISTORY In the beginning there was a fruit and vegetable stand…

Fairway Market’s story starts in 1933, when Nathan Glickberg began selling produce on an Upper West Side street corner. Little did he know that one day his small business would grow into one of the most celebrated food stores in the country. Even back then, he strove to offer what would become the hallmarks of the Fairway brand: excellent value, wide variety, and items at the peak of their freshness.

By 1954, Nathan had built a loyal following and used his success to establish his first storefront, along with his son Leo. Leo’s wife suggested giving it the name Fairway after a business her father used to own—she thought the name to be lucky.

Located at the corner of 74th Street and Broadway, the new market would eventually become our flagship location and the heart and soul of our business.

In those days, the store was a glimmer of what it is now—there were sawdust-covered floors, racks supported by milk crates, and barely enough room for the registers. But in 1974, Leo passed the torch to his son Howie, who soon set the ball rolling on plans for expansion. Over the next few years, the store grew and Howie brought in a team of food experts who built up an unrivaled selection of specialty items and traditional groceries in every category. The Fairway name became synonymous with unique, imported, things-you-didn’t-know-existed foods.

Our reputation for offering the best of the best spread as the 74th Street store became known as a food lover’s destination.

Over the following years, we established more locations as demand grew—the number of requests received for a Fairway Market in this town or that was truly staggering. Along the way, we racked up accolades, from being named one of the country’s most important specialty grocers by The Gourmet Retailer to numerous appearances on local “best of” lists. Today, we’re proud to serve our communities with 15 stores throughout the tri-state area.

As much as we’ve changed, we’ve also stayed the same. What has remained constant is the desire to keep Fairway Market close to its customer-focused roots and to never lose sight of all of the things that make it special and unique. As Howie once said, “whenever we bring a new product into the store, or a new department into the store, we become experts at it.” And that just about sums it up.

1. YOU’RE GETTING FOODS AT THEIR BEST At Fairway Market, we pride ourselves on offering fresh produce at its ripest and best. But fruits and vegetables are living things, after all, and they’re not going to stay that way forever.

Especially when you’ve forgotten about that tub of berries or head of broccoli in the back of your fridge.

Frozen fruits and vegetables are typically flash frozen at their peak and they stay that way, preserving their flavor and nutrients (the FDA even states that frozen produce has the same nutrients as fresh). They’ll also last well beyond their season—in fact, when buying produce out-of-season, frozen is often a good bet.

Similarly, frozen can be a godsend when looking to get the most out of your meat and seafood, which generally should be used as soon as possible when fresh. Most frozen seafood is flash frozen at sea, so it’s preserved almost as soon as its caught. And when stored in the freezer, meat will last for months.

RECIPE: FAIRWAY BERRY BLAST SMOOTHIE The best part about using frozen fruit in smoothies is that they’ll chill your drink without any ice, which can water it down and dilute the flavor. We like this mix of blueberries, strawberries and raspberries because it has a delicious balance of tart and sweet. But feel free to substitute an equivalent amount of your favorite frozen fruits—this is a flexible recipe for making the creamy and cool treat of your dreams!

INGREDIENTS: (SERVES 2) 1/2 cup Fairway frozen blueberries 1/2 cup Fairway frozen strawberries 1/2 cup Fairway frozen raspberries 1 x 6 oz container Fairway Greek yogurt 1/2 cup milk 2 teaspoons honey

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. If too thick, add more milk until desired consistency is reached. Divide between two large glasses and serve.

RECIPE:

FAIRWAY ULTIMATE ITALIAN SANDWICH This year marks Fairway Market’s 86th anniversary and we’re celebrating the only way we know how to: with lots of glorious food! Keep an eye out during the month of March for incredible deals on your favorite Fairway foods—the ones that have kept our customers coming back to support us year after year.

In true Fairway fashion, we’ve created this commemorative sandwich with a few of our signature items. It’s a delicious way to celebrate 86 years of the perfect pairing: us and you.

INGREDIENTS: (SERVES 4) 1 Fairway baguette 1/4 cup Fairway Extra Virgin Olive Oil 1 tablespoon Fairway Balsamic Vinegar Salt and pepper 4 oz Fairway San Daniele prosciutto 8 oz Fairway fresh mozzarella, thinly sliced 1/2 cup fresh basil leaves 2 Roma tomatoes, sliced into thin rounds

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Cut the baguette crosswise into four pieces of equal length. Split each piece lengthwise to create sandwich tops and bottoms. If desired, lightly toast the baguette pieces in an oven or toaster oven.

2. Whisk together the olive oil and vinegar in a small bowl. Season with salt and pepper.
