e are privileged and honored to present to you a beautiful season of extraordinary performances. Privileged in that, in a time when our world seems at war with itself and the arts have weathered a horrific storm over the last few years, we get to invite you to share in the bounty, joy, and brilliance of a full Quick Center season. Honored in that, in a time where all means of ‘normal’ have shifted, our team has stayed strong, powerful, and has even flourished to present you with a season like no other at the Quick.

The season opens with U.S. premieres of representation from the Global South.

Performance works presented by our College of Arts & Sciences Senior Fellows in the Arts, nora chipaumire from Zimbabwe, and Brett Bailey from South Africa. Their performances reconstruct theatre as we know it and engage us in vital discussions on race, gender, and the African Diaspora using traditional music, dance, and performance.

The Open VISIONS Forum brings critical voices in the sociopolitical landscape, from Frances Haugen talking on ethics in the media, to PBS legend Judy Woodruff, to social activist and daughter of Desmond Tutu, Rev. Tutu, and world-class journalists Bret Stephens and Carl Bernstein.

Music lovers make sure you get your tickets early for the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Mariachi Herencia de México with Lupita Infante, Monterey Jazz Festival on Tour with Dee Dee Bridgewater and Kurt Elling, and, straight from the royal wedding, The Kingdom Choir. Dance lovers, the international stars from Israel’s Vertigo Dance return with a work reflecting on community. nora chipaumire’s newest work investigates the legend of Nehanda, a powerful Zimbabwean spirit venerated by the Shona people who inhabits only women. In 1896-97, Nehanda’s medium was a heroic revolutionary leader who orchestrated the first uprisings in Britishoccupied Southern Rhodesia. Captured and hung after an unjust trial, she was executed by the British colonizers who were so scared that they ordered her bones and the skull to be sent to the UK. Nehanda offers a legal and philosophical defense for these first historic heroes of Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle, with its libretto based on the infamous court case “The Queen [Victoria] vs. Nehanda” (1898).

This ritual theatre work brings an ancient myth into a fractured contemporary world.

South African-born playwright, designer, and director, Brett Bailey, uses performance to interrogate the dynamics of the postcolonial world, highlighting the blind, forgotten, broken, and the voiceless. The Stranger originally premiered as ORFEUS in Cape Town in 2006, and since then has been evolving in distinct versions made in different parts of the world in collaboration with 10 local performers, musicians, and other creatives, grounded in the contexts of the places in which it is re-made.

Carl Bernstein

For over four decades, he has been setting the standard for modern investigative reporting, achieving a legacy of balanced, award-winning journalism.

An advocate for accountability and transparency in social media, in late 2020 Frances Haugen, having become increasingly alarmed by the choices Facebook was making—prioritizing its own profits over public safety and putting people’s lives at risk— made the courageous decision to blow the whistle on the company for which she was working. She has since testified in front of the U.S. Congress, U.K. and E.U. Parliaments, and others, engaging with lawmakers internationally on how to best address the negative externalities of social media platforms. She fundamentally believes the problems we face with social media are solvable, and is dedicated to uniting people around the world to bring about change.

Vertigo Dance Pardes

Pardes was born at home. It is a work of art in which the body connects to its inner spiritual layers — to the insides of each human being/dancer, while being interwoven with a common tapestry.

Pardes, the Hebrew word for ‘orchard,’ originates from ancient Persian and means a garden of trees.

The word has also penetrated to other languages as ‘paradise.’ Perhaps the title of this new work by Vertigo Dance is a nod to where they create and live — an eco-arts village committed to the intersections of creativity, social responsibility and ecological sustainability. With a musical soundtrack created by internationally acclaimed percussionist, Itamar Doari, the dancers deal with the duality of their lives, with the tensions they experience between their individual needs and the demands of society, between the person and the universal.

Bret Stephens is a well-known op-ed columnist for The New York Times and a senior contributor to NBC News. After launching his career at Commentary magazine in the mid-1990’s, he spent 16 years at The Wall Street Journal, most notably writing “Global View,” the neoconservative foreign-affairs column for which he was awarded the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for distinguished commentary. In the midst of his time with The Wall Street Journal he spent several years as the editor of The Jerusalem Post.

Stephens has also authored or had original essays included in several books, including America in Retreat: The New Isolationism and the Coming Global Disorder (2014) and more recently in Has Obama Made the World a More Dangerous Place?: The Munk Debate on U.S. Foreign Policy (2015) and The Dying Art of Disagreement (2017).

Bhaskar Sunkara has built some of independent media’s most successful projects. He founded Jacobin between his sophomore and junior years in college when he was 21 years old; the publication has now grown to a paid circulation of nearly 70,000, with 2.6 million unique visitors per month in 2021.

The challenges of growing up black and female in apartheid South Africa have been the foundation of Rev. Nontombi Naomi Tutu’s life as an activist for human rights. The third child of Archbishop Desmond and Nomalizo Leah Tutu, she learned early on that the whole human family loses when we accept situations of oppression, and that the teaching and preaching of hate and division injure us all. Rev. Tutu is founder of Nozizwe Consulting, which brings groups together to learn from and celebrate their differences and shared humanity, and has led Truth and Reconciliation Workshops for groups dealing with conflict.

The exhibition, curated by Michelle DiMarzo, PhD together with Fairfield University undergraduate students, explores representations of femininity and virtue in Renaissance paintings of the Virgin Mary, female saints, and nuns.

January 27–April 21, 2023 For over five decades, Connecticutbased artist Norma Minkowitz has used fiber to explore the fundamental tensions of being human. Her crocheted and interlaced threads, stiffened into hard mesh-like structures, seemingly defy gravity to take the form of wearables, vessels, figurative sculpture, and drawings.

Presenting a range of works spanning her entire career, this exhibition invites viewers to contemplate the dualities of delicacy and strength, nature and culture, body and spirit.

FALL 2022 Gladys Triana: Beyond Exile September 23– December 17, 2022

Gladys Triana is a Cuban-born, New-Yorkbased, multi-disciplinary artist whose work rebels against authoritarian rule, domination, and power. She explores themes related to the historical struggle of women and the condition of exile, as well as subjects such as ephemerality, memory, and ultimately the search for a language of transcendence. Triana’s body of work encompasses largescale sculpture, immersive installations, photography, and mixed media, as well as painting and drawing. Curated by Aluna Curatorial Collective, this twovenue survey (at the Fairfield University Art Museum and the Art Museum at University of St. Joseph) spans work from the 1970s to the present. The work at Fairfield will focus on her early years in New York, and her sense of exile and feelings of isolation.

SPRING 2023 Women’s Rights are Human Rights January 20–April 8, 2023

Gender inequalities remain deeply entrenched in global society: women lack access to decent work and face occupational segregation and gender wage disparities; are often denied access to basic education and health care; suffer from violence and discrimination; and are under-represented in political and economic decision-making processes. The more than 80 posters, created by artists worldwide, celebrate and acknowledge the vital role that all citizens should play in protecting and promoting human rights while actively challenging gender inequality and stereotypes, advancing sexual and reproductive rights, and protecting women and girls against brutality. In their collective visual voice, these posters promote women’s empowerment and participation in society while challenging religious and cultural norms and patriarchal attitudes that subordinate, stigmatize, or restrict women from achieving their fullest potential.

Peter Anton: Just Desserts April 28–July 15, 2023

This whimsical exhibition of Peter Anton’s outsized, hyper-realistic sculptures of sweets will include ice cream cones, cakes and confections. Anton has experimented with various methods, including wood, metal, plaster, resin, and oil and acrylic paints to achieve the physicality of his monumental desserts.

He chooses subjects that encourage people to think about their own relationship to food, and the memories and nostalgia that these childhood favorites conjure.

Wilton Cardinal Gregory is the seventh Archbishop of The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. and the first African American Cardinal in the Roman Catholic Church. Cardinal Gregory grew up in Chicago, where he was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago on May 9, 1973, and three years after his ordination, began graduate studies at the Pontifical Liturgical Institute (Sant’ Anselmo) in Rome. There, he earned his doctorate in sacred liturgy in 1980. Cardinal Gregory has served in many leading roles in the Catholic Church including as President of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) from 2001–2004. Cardinal Gregory has written extensively on church issues, including pastoral statements on the death penalty, social justice, euthanasia/physician-assisted suicide, and interreligious and ecumenical affairs.
