Village News: Faircape Life Onrus

CEO Letter

We have to believe that we are doing something right. In this challenging financial climate, we still experience unprecedented demand and property resales happening in weeks instead of months. We continue to enjoy positive reviews from all new residents and enjoy great support because we differ from other retirement groups.

HERE ARE SOME OF THE KEY UNIQUE IDENTIFIERS:

We are the only private retirement group with a healthcare facility in each village, headed by healthcare managers.

therapist and group social worker.

We have service level agreements with brandaligned doctors’ practices to ensure continuity of care.

We have paid for emergency response by qualified paramedics.

We are the only group with ‘pet-friendly’ healthcare, with a pet manager employed across the villages.

We have a strong corporate shareholder in Old Mutual to give residents added peace of mind.

Faircape Life is one of the largest property owners in the Western Cape, with ownership of 811 of the 977 homes in six villages. We expect this number to surpass the thousand mark next year.

Houses are continuously upgraded and renovated and our trained horticulturists maintain our social spaces and landscapes.

Our villages are managed by Faircape, who employs over 850 skilled professionals and we have service agreements with professionals like speech therapists, physiotherapists, psychologists and dietitians.

We have over eighty rehabilitation licenses in our hospitals and over 200 five-star ratings for excellence in outcomes and patient experience.

We are the only retirement group who have occupational therapists and social workers in each village headed by a group occupational

Tokai Pharmacy is available to all residents in the Southern Suburbs and Somerset West.

We’ve built a team driven by shared ideals and goals to deliver excellence, ensuring our residents enjoy the best quality of life in their retirement.

A Message from Our Director

It’s been an eventful year and we’ve enjoyed watching a number of projects in our portfolio take shape. Over the last year we have purchased three erven to expand our Bridgewater and Onrus villages as well as built further homes in Heritage and Clé du Cap. Five luxury three bedroom homes have been added to Onrus and we will commence construction of a further thirteen homes in Bridgewater in the first quarter of 2025. Demand for luxury retirement with onsite healthcare remains sturdy as our waiting lists continue to grow.

On a smaller scale but equally important we have focused on upgrading many of our common areas. With the help of our Group Interior Designer and Group Horticulturists we have enjoyed refreshing and improving a number of spaces to bring them in line with modern trends and optimise focal areas. It can be a challenge at times to balance the differing perspectives and needs of residents but we are grateful for the input of our respective Trustees and committee members who play a vital role in representing the community. We appreciate being able to engage effectively with them to reach solutions together.

In our efforts to reduce reliance on Eskom and operate more efficiently we have installed solar panels and backup batteries to feed electricity into the common areas. InPower also continues to provide affordable solutions to many residents opting to install or rent their

own solar systems in an effort to “go green” and simultaneously save on electricity costs.

An increasing number of residents elect to order from our coffee shop menus and much attention has gone into making menus seasonal, offering variety, compiling an array of platters as well as home-based catering for private functions. Our recent catering survey highlighted residents’ appreciation and satisfaction for the staff who are forever being complimented. Our Catering team remains motivated to continuously improve their offerings, striving for healthy and consistently tasty meals. Feedback is received daily and all comments are seriously investigated and considered, helping us to monitor and improve where necessary.

Our residents’ social calendar remains a top priority and a special thanks must go to the Social Committees and all residents and staff who assist in the ongoing functions and activities. It’s been a particularly exciting last quarter with inter-village tournaments including the Bridge Tournament at Clé du Cap, Bowls Tournament hosted by Heritage and the quiz at Noordhoek.

Swinging in Style: Swinging in Style:

Ease into Retirement with Life Rights at a Faircape Life Village

Choosing the right retirement lifestyle can be challenging. Life Rights at a Faircape Life village offers an attractive pathway to comfort, security, and peace of mind.

A Life Right provides a secure right to occupy a home for as long as you live, supported by the legal protections of The Housing Development Schemes for Retired Persons Act 65 of 1988

4 REASONS TO CONSIDER LIFE RIGHTS

1 Cost Savings and Transparency

With life rights, residents avoid expenses typically associated with traditional property purchases. There is no transfer duty, VAT, or expensive deeds registration fees, significantly reducing upfront and ongoing costs.

2 Hassle-Free Ownership

Unlike sectional title owners, life rights holders at Faircape villages are not liable for special levies and Faircape covers any difference between levies collected and actual operational costs, ensuring better financial predictability.

3 Smart Estate Planning and Convenience.

Life rights present a practical, estate-friendly solution for retirement planning. Upon termination of the Life Right, the holder’s estate receives a refund. With no need for registration at the Deeds Office, transitioning from agreement to occupancy is smooth and quick, often taking just a few days.

3 Faircape’s Commitment to Quality

As Faircape Life retains ownership of Life Right properties, Faircape remains fully invested in maintaining and enhancing each of its six villages. From facility upgrades to ongoing maintenance of the common property, Faircape ensures that each village remains in prime condition, safeguarding your investment, lifestyle and enjoyment.

Experience the ease and luxury of retirement at a Faircape Life village with life rights-an excellent choice offering value, security, and the quality of life you deserve.

Bridgewater

They say, change is as good as a holiday!

During this year, Bridgewater Manor had some exciting upgrades in the Village.

Apart from our Cottage upgrades that are ongoing, improvements to our coffee shop now complement the new furniture, carpets and beautiful artwork in our lounge area.

Friends and family gather here, especially on Sunday afternoons when they join our residents for Sunday lunch.

During the cold winter months, our new fireplaces have been a welcome addition. The enclosed porch has also been a great addition during the cold, with residents feeling as if they’re still sitting in the garden.

Our reception area has also had a bit of a facelift, with a new counter and new furniture pieces, it’s a wonderful way to welcome everyone!

This year was also filled with fun and exciting outings and events in the Village. A resident favourite is always our village braais and of course the favourite outing, is always a wine tasting. Residents love exploring new places and taking part in new adventures.

We are truly blessed to have such a beautiful Village and wonderful residents.

With all the new and exciting changes at Bridgewater Manor in 2024, we are looking forward to even more happy events and building strong and lasting relationships with our residents in 2025.

Braais at Bridgewater Bringing the Community Together

Nothing unites South Africans quite like a traditional braai. Over the past year, residents at Faircape Life Bridgewater have gathered regularly for braais that bring warmth, laughter, and camaraderie to their community.

Organised by Bridgewater Committee members Mr. John Griffiths (Chairman) and Mr. Neil Cloete, these gatherings have become much-anticipated occasions for residents to unwind, meet new friends, and share in the joy of good food and lively entertainment.

At the heart of every successful braai is Chef Barend who has been a standout, making sure that each steak is cooked to perfection while the friendly Front of House team, add an extra touch of warmth to the atmosphere.

Adding to the festive spirit, Reunion, a talented four-member band has had residents dancing from dusk till dawn.

In addition to music and mingling, these braais have introduced a dash of friendly competition. The popular cornhole game has quickly become a staple, with reigning champions Mrs. Hart and Mrs. Hugget holding onto their title, though other residents have risen to the challenge in the hopes of claiming victory.

At the most recent braai on November 1, organisers decided to shake things up by pausing the cornhole matches in favour of

a fun lotto game. Each resident received a lucky number, and the winners walked away with fabulous prizes, earning both the title of lotto champions and the cheers of their fellow residents.

With the support of Faircape Life’s exceptional  team and the unwavering enthusiasm of residents, these braais are bound to continue creating cherished memories for years to come.

Uncorking Joy Wine Tasting Adventures at Faircape Life Bridgewater

What’s a better way to spend a winter’s day than indulging in a delightful wine tasting paired with good food? For the residents of Faircape Life Bridgewater, visiting local wine farms has become a beloved tradition, taking full advantage of their stunning location in the heart of the Winelands, renowned for its longest wine route.

This year, to add an exciting twist to their outings, the residents participated in a thrilling blind wine tasting at Lourensford Wine Estate.

If they correctly guessed all the wines, they would win their tasting experience for free! Although the group didn’t manage to identify every wine, the laughter and companionship shared during the event made it clear that the experience was a resounding success.

In April, residents enjoyed a beautiful autumn day at Waterkloof Wine Estate, where they participated in a traditional wine tasting with no guessing games.

June brought another highlight with a delightful wine and cheese pairing at Blaauwklippen Wine Estate. The chilly winter day provided  the perfect backdrop for this cosy gathering, as residents savoured carefully selected wines paired with delectable cheeses.

As winter drew to a close, residents embraced the opportunity to explore a new local gem-

WYN, a recently opened wine tasting venue in Somerset West.

Buzzing Insights and Historical Tales Engaging Talks at the Village

THE SWEET WORLD OF BEES

Earlier this year, Bridgewater residents were abuzz with excitement as they welcomed Achmat Kazie from The Bee Inspired Honey Company.

Achmat shared his passion and extensive knowledge of bees, captivating everyone with fascinating insights into these remarkable insects.

Residents enjoyed a unique tasting experience, sampling raw honey and other natural products made from honey, beeswax, and propolis. Achmat also shared intriguing bee facts that left the audience buzzing with newfound appreciation:

A TITANIC TALE

In another captivating session, residents were transported back to 1912, when Helderberg Hospice presented “The Night Lives On,” a compelling talk focused on the tragic aftermath of the Titanic’s sinking.

Rotarian Brian De Villiers led the discussion, shedding light on lesser-known aspects of the disaster. To add a special touch, Rotarian Elle Rautenberg accompanied the talk on piano, setting a nostalgic and respectful tone for the event.

Through Elizabeth’s Lens

Bridgewater resident Elizabeth Cook has been capturing stunning moments through her lens for years. Her incredible photography continues to inspire and showcase the beauty around us.

Cle du Cap

There is so much in celebrating together and connecting with friends and family.

As we look back on 2024, Clé du Cap has had another vibrant year, filled with joyful moments, shared experiences, and, at times, bittersweet farewells. Through it all, the warm sense of community that defines our village has remained as strong as ever.

This year, we were delighted to welcome many new residents, each bringing unique stories and backgrounds. Their presence adds to the rich tapestry of village life, and we look forward to seeing them create lasting memories and friendships in their new home. At the same time, we’ve also bid farewell to beloved friends who have been part of our community for many years. Their legacy lives on in the cherished memories and stories we share.

Our commitment to fostering health and wellness continues, and a highlight this year was the addition of a new treadmill to our fully equipped gym. It’s been a welcome addition, delighting our regulars and even attracting some new fitness enthusiasts.

At Clé du Cap, wellness extends beyond physical fitness though. Mental well-being and social connection are just as important, and we are thrilled to see our beloved social activities thriving. The Knitting Circle has come back to life, offering a space for creativity, conversation, and camaraderie, and there’s even a ladies’ snooker team forming. Our choir has also welcomed new voices and continues to be a joyful outlet for all involved. Mondays bring Game Day to the village, where residents gather to play a variety of card and board games—another wonderful way to make connections and discover common interests.

This year’s social calendar was filled with memorable evenings featuring live

performances, themed events, and plenty of laughter. These gatherings are a reminder of the joy we find in celebrating together and connecting with friends and neighbours.

There’s always something happening at Clé du Cap, and as we look toward the new year, we reremain dedicated to providing a safe, happy, and welcoming environment for all.

The most wonderful place to live. Fabulous Management and staff, great facilities and support and help all the time. I cannot imagine living anywhere else!

A Blooming Spectacle A Blooming Spectacle

Clé du Cap Gardens in Full Glory

This year, Clé du Cap Gardens have treated residents to a breathtaking show, creating a haven of natural beauty for all to enjoy. With spring’s arrival, the gardens burst into a symphony of colours and blossoms, each more beautiful than the last.

Wandering along the pathways is an uplifting experience, bringing a sense of calm and joy to everyone who strolls through. There’s always something captivating to pause and admire, from delicate petals to vibrant hues, making every walk feel like a new discovery.

Picnics in the Park

Just a year ago, our village team transformed a beautiful garden extension into what we now call ‘Recreation Park’. Whether you know it as ‘The Park’ or ‘The Secret Garden’, this charming oasis has quickly become a magical spot for gatherings and relaxation.

In February, as summer graced us with warm evenings, we hosted a delightful Picnic in the Park event that residents are still talking about. There was an array of delicious snacks prepared by our very own kitchen, and with wine glasses raised to the setting sun, the evening was simply unforgettable.

Karel, a gifted violinist, filled the air with soothing melodies from beloved movies and stage performances, creating the perfect soundtrack for the evening. Laughter, music, and community spirit made this picnic a cherished memory, and we look forward to many more enchanting evenings in our ‘secret garden’.

Christmas Time at Clé du Cap

At Clé du Cap, where hearts are bright, The festive season feels just right.

With carols sung by the choir so sweet, We try not to dance on our tired feet.

Dave’s at the pub, with a beer in hand, Telling tales about his ‘youthful’ stand.

Daphne, with her jokes and cheeky grin, Is the queen of this pub, let the fun begin!

The flower ladies, with their blooms so neat, Arranging petals, making Christmas complete.

Kay, next year, hits a century-wow, A hundred years-she’ll still show us how!

The staff, with smiles that never tire, Make sure we’re pampered, never want for desire.

The snooker guys, cue sticks in tow, Hoping this year, their shots don’t go low.

The decorations shine, twinkling so bright, The Christmas tree is a glorious sight!

Chante and Angie, with a hug and a cheer, Filling the air with festive good cheer.

The food’s a feast, but we eat with care, For we all know we can’t fit into that chair!

And though the wind may blow with might, Inside Clé du Cap, it’s all merry and bright.

So let’s raise a glass, and give a cheer, For another wonderful, Christmassy year.

In this village, where laughter’s the rule, The Christmas spirit keeps us all cool!

Celebrating Mrs. Kay Preston

Kay Gallett Preston, born on January 18, 1925, in Castle Douglas, Scotland, is a source of inspiration and warmth to all at Clé du Cap. Her remarkable life story, rooted in resilience, passion, and dedication, is a testament to her spirited journey through nearly a century of adventure and compassion.

Raised in the Scottish countryside, Kay attended Kirkcudbright Academy, making the half-hour journey by bus—or bicycle when she missed it! A keen sportswoman, she trained as a physical education teacher at Irene Marsh College in Liverpool and taught at Oswestry Girls High School in Shropshire.

After three years of teaching, Kay pivoted her career to physiotherapy, studying at Middlesex Hospital in London. Life took another turn when Kay followed a friend to East London, South Africa, where she originally planned to stay for just a year. At a local squash club, she met Peter, who would

become her husband and lifelong partner. The couple settled in East London, where Kay established a thriving physiotherapy practice, specialising in helping children with scoliosis and adults with back issues.

Kay and Peter raised three children, each now living around the world with their own families. While her daughters reside in Australia and England, her son Andrew lives in Cape Town and is a frequent visitor to Clé du Cap, often enjoying a Sunday lunch and a friendly game of Scrabble with his mother.

Kay’s story is a beautiful reminder of a life well-lived and a spirit that continues to enrich the lives of those around her. She is, without a doubt, a treasured member  of the Clé du Cap family, inspiring us all with her resilience, kindness, and zest for life.

Closing the Tab on 2024

After taking its time, Spring finally made its way to Onrus in early November, filling  our village with vibrant blooms. Though Spring arrived a bit late in Hermanus, our residents made an early start by visiting the West Coast National Park in August. They celebrated the season with a delightful overnight trip, soaking in the sunny wildflowers of the West Coast and even glimpsing the snow-capped Cape Fold mountains on the way back.

Our floral theme continued with a week of bus trips to the Chelsea Flower Show recreation in Stanford and a “Spring Gardening” talk from our resident horticulturist, Tobias

This year’s Winter will certainly be remembered for its storms, bringing heavy rains and fierce winds that sadly cost us over 30 trees and shrubs in the communal gardens. But nature’s pruning gave us a head start on our winter gardening cycle.

Our community also saw changes, with three of our oldest residents, Alida Kotze, Erna Lindsay, and Lola Stander, moving into the Healthcare Centre. At 97, 98, and 102, these remarkable ladies deserve a bit of royal treatment, but they haven’t gone far; and they and their families still join us in the clubhouse for coffee or meals. They have also drawn a steady stream of visitors to Healthcare as friends come to see them.

The extended blustery season inspired a lively boost in Clubhouse activities. Our trustees launched a monthly Pub Games and a Happy Hour for Winter sports, sparking the formation of a Ladies Pool Club, with seasoned players offering tips to newcomers. Our table tennis group also got a fun upgrade-one of our star player’s spouses turned out to be quite the

pianist, and ‘The Entertainer’ has become a jazzy background to our ping-pong matches! This lively piano will be celebrated with a centenary performance, closing on a high note on 28 December.

Our games clubs are thriving. The Bridge team recently took home a team victory at the InterVillage tournament, and our bowls players are eagerly gearing up for competition, even in the absence of some star Boland players.

Beyond the games, our residents poured their hearts into charitable efforts. We supported animal welfare with the Faircape Winter Warmer Pet Drive, and celebrated Mandela Day by collecting an impressive array of pet food, toys, bedding, and supplies for the Hermanus and Stanford animal welfare groups. Donations of bric-a-brac were delivered to the HAWS charity shop, and a group of dedicated residents spent Mandela Day helping pack over two tonnes of food for our furry friends.

As we close the books on 2024, we’re saving the most precious files-those filled with memories of togetherness, kindness, and shared joy. Here’s to another memorable year at Faircape lIfe Onrus!

102 and Counting Celebrating Mrs. Lola Stander

In 2022, the Trustees raised a glass to Mrs. Lola Stander-fondly known as “Tannie Lola” with a champagne breakfast to celebrate her incredible 100th birthday.

She chose a few close friends from the village to join her, and with her sparkling wit as sharp as ever, she graciously posed with her daughter Leslie, quipping, “Just make sure those pictures are in focus!”

Tannie Lola has been part of the Onrus community for 20 years. Known for her delightful spirit, she jokingly insists she has two birthdays: the one assigned by the government and her real birthday. After all, when you’ve

entered your second century, why settle for just one celebration?

This year, our annual over-90s high tea coincided with Tannie Lola’s preferred birthday, and her 102nd was a milestone worthy of extra fanfare. While 30 fellow nonagenarians enjoyed a luxurious high tea in the Clubhouse, well-wishers lined up at Tannie Lola’s door to pay their respects—including a few journalists and even the Mayor of Overstrand!

With her own celebration plaque cemented along the Onrus coastal walk, Tannie Lola has truly left her mark—not just in stone, but in the hearts of every resident and staff member at Faircape Life Onrus.

Biochemist Turned Dr. Anina Lee

Critter Expert Extraordinaire

Dr. Anina Lee, a biochemist turned conservationist, has become a beloved voice for local wildlife with her weekly column in The Village News, where she brings the hidden lives of the area’s critters

Each story in these books is beautifully illustrated  by Margie Crossman-a botanist, teacher, and talented artist. Both books are part of a project to support The Whale Coast Conservation’s Chameleon Sanctuary, and proceeds from sales will go directly toward this vital cause.

These delightful volumes, filled with stories and art, are now available at our reception!

to light. Her passion for conservation, paired with her knack for storytelling, has now been captured in two wonderful books that compile her fascinating articles on the creatures of the Whale Coast.

On a rainy Wednesday in August 2024, 25 excited residents set off for the West Coast Flower Tour. The unforgettable adventure was a dream shared by Onrus Manor residents Bernhard Turkstra and Jos Rabie who meticulously planned the entire outing.

Tour guide Andre Kruger, a friend of Jos, joined the team, bringing a wealth of knowledge and arranging a special package at the Blue Bay Lodge in Saldanha. A luxury bus and a generous wine sponsorship from the Trustees set the stage for a perfect getaway.

The journey began with a stop at the West Coast Fossil Park, where residents explored ancient fossils, discovering the area’s rich history from five million years ago. Next, they arrived at Blue Bay Lodge, where they were welcomed with complimentary sherry and a delectable five-star dinner.

West Coast Flower Tour

The next day, the group visited the West Coast National Park, guided by an expert who shared fascinating insights into the flora, fauna, and history of the area. Highlights included Seeberg Viewpoint, Tsaarsbank, and the picturesque 16-mile beach, where they dined at Kraalbaai. The trip concluded with a memorable journey home, punctuated by a breathtaking view of snow-capped mountains.

Together, we’ve created something truly special at Noordhoek Manor—thank you for being the essential ingredients in our recipe for a remarkable retirement community!

Art in the Spotlight

On Friday, 6th September, Noordhoek hosted its inaugural Art Exhibition, marking an unforgettable evening of creativity and community. Thanks to the generous  support  of the Faircape Life Noordhoek Discretionary Fund, the event was a stunning success, drawing a large crowd eager to experience the artistic talent of its residents.

The exhibition featured works by eight resident artists, showcasing a vibrant range of styles and mediums, from watercolours to oils and acrylics. Visitors were impressed by the diverse talent on display, and while the

mouthwatering refreshments certainly added to the event’s charm, it was the art that truly captured the spotlight. Many guests returned the following day to admire the artwork in a quieter setting, proving that the appeal of the creations extended far beyond the tempting treats.

The evening was a celebration of creativity, and the overwhelming response ensures that this event will become a regular highlight at Faircape Life Noordhoek. The artists, whose talent brought the exhibition to life, are already looking forward to the next opportunity to showcase their works.

A Garden of

On Thursday, 24th October, Noordhoek’s Annual Open Gardens event flourished in full bloom, as twenty of the village’s most passionate gardeners opened their gates to showcase their stunning creations. The village transformed into a vibrant tapestry of colours, fragrances, and inspiration, with each garden offering a unique glimpse into the creativity and personality of its gardener.

Residents, friends, and family meandered through the meticulously curated spaces, with each garden telling its own story. The event, thoughtfully organised into four time slots, allowed for a relaxed and leisurely exploration. Maps guided visitors to the participating homes, making it easy to navigate the stunning displays. A true favourite of the calendar, this celebration of nature’s beauty always brings the community together, highlighting the gardening talents of our residents.

Spooktacular Beats, and Memories

Noordhoek’s Halloween Disco Party has become an unforgettable night of fun and flair! On Friday, 25th October, the clubhouse was transformed into a lively dance hall, thanks to the imaginative efforts of the Entertainment Committee, who decked out every corner with spooky charm.

The festivities began with a delectable dinner, followed by an exciting lottery draw, and once the music started, there was no stopping the

energy. Resident DJ Bea Compton kicked off the evening with a mix of classic hits, packing the dancefloor with over 75 residents showing off their best moves.

Residents danced the night away, revelling in the costumes, the camaraderie, and the electrifying atmosphere. The combined joy and enthusiasm of the community, along with the hard work of the team, made for an unforgettable celebration.

Tokai Estate

It is incredible how quickly time has flown by!

New residents are warmly welcomed and find their place in various friendship groups, adding fresh energy to the community. This sense of togetherness and growth is a testament to the shared spirit of everyone here.

Reflecting on the past eight years, Faircape Life Tokai Estate has blossomed into a close-knit, thriving community, surpassing everyone’s expectations. Friendships from those early days have not only endured but have grown even stronger. A quick glance at the booking sheet for functions reveals just how deep these connections run.

New residents are warmly welcomed and find their place in various friendship groups, adding fresh energy to the community. This sense of togetherness and growth is a testament to the shared spirit of everyone here.

The gardens on the estate have flourished into a living testament to remarkable growth and transformation.

What began as simple roadside beds and sparse trees has now evolved into a thriving, verdant landscape, with lush, towering Poplar, Water Pear, and Celtis trees lining every road. Indigenous flora and fauna add vibrant splashes of colour, creating a sustainable, self-supporting ecosystem that enhances the estate’s natural beauty. This abundant green environment symbolises our commitment to ecological health and the preservation of biodiversity for the future.

We’re thrilled to take this moment to reflect on some standout highlights from what has been an incredibly eventful and productive year for the estate. From significant growth in our landscapes to exciting new projects, every milestone reflects the dedication of our team and community.

Blooming Bright at the Chelsea Flower Show 2024

South Africa’s representation at the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show made a triumphant comeback, with the SANBI-Kirstenbosch Gardens exhibit winning a coveted gold medal.

This remarkable achievement celebrates the team’s 41st entry and features a stunning recreation of the Harold Porter National Botanical Garden, located at the gateway to the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve in Betty’s Bay.

In the face of challenges, including the withdrawal of long-term sponsorship, a passionate team from the private sector rallied together, led by esteemed horticulturist and landscape designer Leon Kluge. They were joined by horticultural expert Keith Kirsten, conservationist Michael Lutzeyer, and Marinda Nel, the former Chairman of the Botanical Society, current project manager and our very own resident.

Their success was made possible by the generosity of private benefactors, with the Rupert Nature Foundation playing a pivotal role in securing the project’s future.

This marks a significant milestone for South Africa on the international horticultural stage, with this being the third gold medal for Leon Kluge and the 38th for our nation.

Additionally, the Cape Flora of South Africa exhibit not only clinched the gold medal but also won Best Exhibit in the Pavilion and Best New Design. A huge congratulations to Tokai Estate resident Marinda Nel for her instrumental role as project manager and fundraiser.

An Evening of Show Tunes, Arias, and Exquisite Wines

Our second Opera, Wine, and Food Pairing event brought a fresh twist to a memorable night.

Guests were treated to an enchanting evening filled with live music, featuring a selection of show tunes, operatic arias, and duets. Each piece was beautifully paired with exotic wines from prestigious estates.

After the performances and tastings concluded , everyone enjoyed a cosy bistrostyle dinner.

The evening was unforgettable-a perfect blend of music, wine, and comfort food that left guests with lasting memories.

Connection & Celebration at The Olive Grove Street Party

Our second Olive Grove Street Party was a resounding success, showcasing the spirited camaraderie of our residents!

Organised by our dedicated community members, this lively event transformed our neighbourhood into a welcoming haven for all, where reservations and table assignments were left at the door.

The evening was brimming with laughter, engaging conversations, and the forging of new friendships as both long-time and new residents mingled over glasses of wine and delectable canapés.

The photos from the event perfectly capture the warmth and joy of the occasion, highlighting the vibrant community spirit that makes our estate truly special.

Neighbourhood Narratives

What is Christmas, and how has it become synonymous with family, festivity, and gift-giving?

Christmas, on the Gregorian calendar, aligns with the end of harvest in the Northern Hemisphere, carrying echoes of ancient winter solstice celebrations on December 21st. Thousands of years ago, pagans marked this transition with rituals that included placing fir branches on doors and lighting fires for protection and warmth. Today, we still use fir trees and candles to create the familiar ambiance of Christmas.

The designation of December 25th as Christ’s birth was a strategic choice by early church officials to align Christian observance with existing pagan customs, encouraging conversions by merging traditional celebrations. While the origins of Christmas are rooted in Christian tradition, it has evolved into a worldwide, secular celebration focused on gathering, sharing, and bonding.

For many, Christmas is a social occasion that transcends religious significance, a time to strengthen bonds with loved ones, renew connections, and make lasting memories. The traditions—meals, decorations, and togetherness—are woven into our personal and cultural histories, reminding us of the importance of community and shared joy.

Though Christmas lasts just twenty-four hours, its spirit lingers, offering an annual opportunity to celebrate, connect, and indulge in festive cheer. This cherished custom brings warmth and connection into our lives, creating moments of happiness and belonging that resonate well beyond the day itself. May it continue to bring us together for generations to come.

Heritage

What a year it’s been! Time flies when you’re having fun!

It’s hard to believe we’re already embarking on a brand-new year, filled with excitement of shared experiences and meaningful connections with all of you-the wonderful residents who make this village truly special.

But before we leap into 2025, let’s take a moment to reflect on 2024.

Weather extremes kept us on our toes but our community weathered it all with grace. Through it all, we celebrated, laughed, and stayed connected, thanks to the incredible spirit of our residents and staff.

Our entertainment committee, made up of passionate and dedicated volunteers, worked tirelessly to bring us a packed calendar of events. We kicked off the year with a special party celebrating our remarkable 47 nonagenarians—many of whom still live independently. From a Valentine’s dance to a glamorous Masquerade Ball, a lively Women’s Day event focused on health and wellness, and an unforgettable Country and Western Hoedown, there was no shortage of fun. The year ended in style with our annual dinner dance and Christmas Market.

We were entertained by the Cape Welsh Choir, inspired by insightful talks from experts like Dr. Rayne Stroebel, and treated to exciting outings to places like the Phelan Shoe Factory, KWV, Welgemeend, the Glenelly Glass Museum, and “Dappat se Gat,” to name a few.

We also got creative with a takkie painting workshop, led by one of our residents, that was inspired by a visit to the Zeitz Mocca at the Waterfront. Some of our more adventurous ladies have since been proudly wearing their beautiful creations.

Our Spring garden week was another highlight, where the stunning Heritage gardens were on full display. Marinda Nel, part of the team behind the winning design at the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show, shared her journey with us—showcasing the incredible work that went into it. We also enjoyed an inspiring trip to Stanford, where we got a sneak peek into the genius behind that award-winning garden.

This year also saw us welcome more than 20 new residents, some of whom are already fully settled in, with others arriving just before the builder’s break. A special thank you to the residents in the cul-de-sac for their patience during this time of change and construction.

Sadly, with new faces also come goodbyes. We lost some beloved members of our community, who passed away or became too frail to continue living independently. However, we’re glad to report that some of these residents have joined our Healthcare family, so they’re never too far away.

There’s so much more I could share about the wonderful benefits of being part of the Heritage family, but as we step into this new year, I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you— the residents, staff, and volunteers—who serve this community with such dedication, kindness, and compassion. You make Faircape Life Heritage a place that we’re all proud to call home.

Unmasking the Joy at

The Heritage Masquerade Ball

Heritage Manor, rolled out a red carpet and pulled out all the stops for their glamorous Masquerade Ball in June 2024.

From the moment guests arrived, they were treated to an evening of glitz and glamour.

Under the meticulous organisation of Rali and her dedicated team, the village clubhouse was transformed into a sparkling soirée of mystery and elegance, reminiscent of grand balls from yesteryear.

The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the stunning array of masks worn by both residents and staff, each uniquely designed with vibrant colours, and feathers.

Adding to the fun, and much to everyone’s surprise, a pair of chickens, tired of being cooped up, decided to join the fun. Determined to blend in, the clever birds dyed their feathers in bright colours. However, their distinctive beaks gave them away when one chicken hilariously struggled to sip from a drink, revealing their true identity. Despite the antics, the chickens were welcomed with open arms as the party carried on.

As dinner concluded and the music picked up, a mysterious figure entered, resembling a classic detective. Laughter and curiosity spread as he weaved through the tables, with guests eager to capture the moment on their phones.

The reveal came when the figure, unable to contain himself, flashed a playful grin, showcasing a sharp blue shirt tucked into tailored trousers. Jimmy, the man behind the disguise, quickly became the star of the evening, adding to the lighthearted atmosphere.

Hėlėne Rykaart, a resident at Heritage, Manor summed it up nicely:

If there’s one thing the residents of Faircape Life Heritage excel at, it’s throwing a party and embracing the fun with gusto. There’s truly nothing like the joy of coming together for a night filled with laughter, and the creativity and effort everyone put into their outfits were simply remarkable.

Exploring

Kirstenbosch Gardens

On a beautiful October morning, a spirited group of Heritage Manor residents set off to visit Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens.

The tour began with a fascinating introduction from a delightful, retired octogenarian, who shared his deep knowledge and passion for the garden’s vast plant diversity. With Table

Mountain as a stunning backdrop, the vibrant tapestry of blooms was breathtaking.

In the Upper Gardens, the King Proteas were in their full glory, and crossing the iconic Boomslang Tree Canopy Walkway gave residents sweeping views of Coral Trees and the magnificent Red African Mahogany.

What was meant to be a 90-minute stroll turned into a wonderfully extended two-anda-half-hour journey through nature’s wonders. Afterwards, the intrepid walkers rewarded themselves with a refreshing break at the Tea Room and Moyo Restaurant. The visit was a lovely reminder that exploring our own city as a tourist is good for the soul.

Saddle Up for a Rootin’

Tootin’

Heritage residents were transported back in time for a Wild West-themed evening that truly captured the spirit of a classic country barn dance! Inspired by the fun and energy of an eighties-style hoedown, this event was the brainchild of Estate Manager David Pepperell and catering trustee Rali Gill, who wanted to bring an unforgettable night of dancing and good vibes.

Night

From the rustic décor—complete with a stick pony and jail—to the line dancers with their cowboy hats, every detail was perfectly in place to create an authentic Western atmosphere.

A DJ spun a fantastic mix of tunes, keeping everyone on their feet, while the themed food added a true taste of the frontier. Residents enthusiastically embraced the Western vibe, donning their finest cowboy attire and bringing the vision to life.

A Pet Partnership

The Animal Welfare Society of South Africa offers a full range of veterinary services to the underprivileged and disadvantaged communities of Cape Town. The Faircape Group is a proud donor partner to AWS SA.

Recently, our Pet Manager, Kelsey, and Marketing Manager, Bradley Wilson, attended a lunch hosted by AWS SA. They were introduced to the dedicated team behind the clinic’s success and received a tour of the grounds, gaining insight into the assistance provided to local communities and the educational programmes offered on pet care.

AWS SA offers the following services:

• Pet sterilisation

• Veterinary services to underprivileged and disadvantaged communities

• Rehoming of stray and unwanted pets

• Pet and animal education in schools

“It is amazing how all of them come together. It really shows the love and care of humanity when given the chance, how no relationship with an animal is a bad idea; and that our core as humans is seen in how we treat animals and those without a voice.”

Paws for a Cause

Faircape’s Furry Friends Boost Well-Being

At Faircape, we’re all about health and happiness, and it turns out, some of our most effective wellness boosters come on four paws, two wings, or even in a fish tank! We know that as we age or recover, having a safe, comforting space makes all the difference. That’s why we integrate animalassisted activities and interactions (AAA&I) into our healthcare routine.

A Tail-Wagging Welcome

In these sessions, we welcome a delightful mix of furry, feathered, and even fishy friends. Dogs of all shapes and sizes bound through our centres, and there’s also our beloved therapy horse, Dreamy, a charming American Miniature, who visits Noordhoek Healthcare Centre. Bred for their gentle temperament, American Miniatures are the ideal therapy animals, and residents can’t wait for her visits.

The Power of Purrs and Paws

Our dedication to animal interaction doesn’t end with visiting pets. We’re proud to have resident cats and freshwater fish tanks and residents also enjoy cheerful activities around our duck pond.

Even a few minutes spent with a friendly pet can spark amazing mental and physical benefits. Studies show that interacting with animals releases serotonin, oxytocin, and prolactin-hormones linked to happiness, relaxation, and lower stress. When combined with our excellent medical care, these encounters enhance recovery and overall quality of life.

GO Green

Power Up Sustainably

Harness the sun’s power by investing in solar batteries and solar-powered outdoor lighting to reduce grid dependency. Switching to LED bulbs can also lower energy consumption and don’t forget to unplug devices when not in use.

Rethink Laundry

Switch to cold water for your laundry as a default. Not only does it cut energy usage but also extends the life of your clothing.

Going green doesn’t have to mean overhauling your lifestyle overnight. Just a few adjustments can significantly reduce your carbon footprint and promote a healthier planet. Here are four simple yet impactful ways to get started:

Smarter Water Usage

Water is precious, so make the most of it. Collect rainwater and use this to water your garden. Track and fix leaks quickly, and don’t forget to set geyser timers to help regulate water heating.

Choose Glass Over Plastic

Ditch disposable plastics and opt for glass containers. Not only are they reusable, but they’re also safer for the environment and keep food fresh for longer.

Health

Unmatched Care, Tailored for a Lifetime

At Faircape Health, we redefine what it means to provide exceptional, long-term healthcare. Across all our villages, our mission is clear: to deliver consistent, high-quality care that prioritises dignity, respect, and the unique needs of every resident.

Comprehensive Care for Every Stage

Our extensive healthcare offerings include frail care, dementia, palliative, and respite care. Residents benefit from the expertise of an interdisciplinary team of doctors, registered nurses, carers, occupational therapists, social workers, and activity assistants who collaborate to provide holistic and tailored care.

Frail Care

Our frail care services are designed to meet the multifaceted needs of each resident. Registered nurses oversee health management, while carers assist with daily activities. We also emphasise emotional and mental well-being through occupational therapy programmes that combine physical exercise, creative activities like arts and crafts, and social engagements.

Dementia Care

Our dementia care is centred on empathy and adaptability, with carers undergoing specialised training to understand cognitive decline and employ effective communication and behaviour management strategies. By tailoring care plans to each individual, we create a supportive atmosphere where residents feel safe and understood. Families are also included in the journey through dedicated support groups.

Palliative and Sub-Acute Care

For those in advanced stages of illness or nearing the end of life, our palliative care provides a peaceful, comforting environment that prioritises dignity and tranquillity. For residents requiring recovery after hospitalisation, our state-of-the-art sub-acute rehabilitation facilities in Faircape Life Tokai and Somerset West are equipped with advanced medical technology and expert teams focused on rehabilitation and recovery.

Our upcoming Somerset West facility will further enhance our offerings with several private ensuite rooms and modern gyms, setting a new benchmark for post-hospital care.

Proactive Health Management

To ensure ongoing well-being, we provide regular Discovery Health checks, emphasising early intervention and proactive health management.

Redefining Care with our

Interdisciplinary Team

At Faircape Health, we believe that great care stems from collaboration. Our Interdisciplinary Teams (IDTs) bring together diverse healthcare professionals to create holistic care plans tailored to each resident’s unique needs.

What is an IDT?

An IDT is a collaborative group of healthcare practitioners, each an expert in their field, who work together to ensure seamless, allencompassing care for residents. By fostering communication and shared problem-solving, IDTs address both physical and mental health needs, reducing gaps in care while enhancing outcomes.

The IDT approach emphasises:

• Holistic Care: Meeting a resident’s physical, cognitive, and emotional needs.

• Efficiency: Streamlining care to prevent overlaps or missed steps.

• Critical Thinking: Encouraging dynamic problem-solving for complex cases.

Benefits for Residents

With the combined expertise of IDT members, residents enjoy enhanced quality of life through personalised plans. These plans might involve assistance with daily living, group therapy for cognitive and physical stimulation, or tailored rehabilitation exercises. The ultimate goal is to maintain or improve a resident’s well-being, independence, and dignity.

How IDTs Benefit Healthcare Professionals

For the professionals involved, IDTs offer the opportunity to learn from peers in other fields, enrich their expertise, and develop innovative solutions together. This collaborative environment supports professional growth while ensuring residents receive the best possible care.

Meet Faircape Health’s IDT Experts

At Faircape Health, our IDT brings together a diverse group of professionals dedicated to delivering holistic and tailored care. These include:

• Doctors who oversee medical needs through initial assessments and ongoing consultations.

• A team of experienced nurses who ensure that medication is administered accurately and patients’ care requirements are evaluated.

• Carers provide daily assistance with compassion and support, creating a comforting environment.

• Physiotherapists focus on mobility, crafting plans to maintain physical health and future readiness.

• Occupational therapists, who empower residents with various interventions that enhance independence in their daily tasks.

• Speech therapists address communication, swallowing, and cognitive challenges with targeted therapies.

• Dietitians develop personalised nutritional plans to promote long-term health.

• Social workers offer vital emotional and psychosocial support to residents and their families.

• Village coordinators who collaborate closely with the IDT to promote residents’ health, safety, and emotional well-being, fostering a holistic approach to care.

Why It Matters

At Faircape Health, we’re committed to making every resident feel seen, heard, and cared for. Our interdisciplinary approach ensures that no detail is overlooked and that every resident thrives under the care of a dedicated and united team.

5 Simple, Smart Eating Tips for 2025

Stepping into a new year is the perfect time to refresh your approach to nutrition. Faircape’s resident Group Dietician. Toni Smyth, shares five easy and sustainable eating habits that will help you feel your best in 2025.

Mix it Up: Enjoy a wide range of fresh, whole foods each day to ensure you’re getting all the essential vitamins and minerals your body needs. Don’t eliminate food groups. Carbohydrate, proteins, and fats all serve important roles in keeping you healthy.

Beware of Fad Diets: True nutrition requires effort, dedication, and mindfulness. There are no shortcuts. While supplements and diets are sometimes helpful, they are often unsustainable. Instead, work with a dietitian to make small, lasting changes that fit your lifestyle.

Don’t Trust Everything You Read Online:

The Internet is full of information, but not all of it is good. Stick to reputable sources, like research articles or advice from trusted health professionals.

Mindful Eating Matters: Dine without distractions. Turn off the TV, put your phone down, and really focus on your meal. Savour the food and appreciate how it fuels your body.

Plan, Plan, Plan: Organise your meals and snacks ahead of time. Pack healthy options for on-the-go, and shop for the week to avoid the stress of last-minute meals.

Flavour & Flair for Any Occasion

Each of our villages offers exceptional catering options tailored to your theme, budget, and schedule. Whether you’re planning a simple birthday party, an intimate gathering, or an extra-special event, our experienced chefs and catering team collaborate with our in-house dietician to craft a variety of menus that cater to your preferences. From classic favourites to innovative dishes, everything is prepared using fresh, high-quality ingredients to create an unforgettable dining experience for your guests. Our dedicated team takes the stress out of event planning, so you can relax and savour the celebration.
