Winter Prep Guide MITIGATE WIND AND WATER DAMAGE BY: Roof Tiles and Sheets - Loose roof tiles and sheets can result in water ingress and dampness. Before any heavy rains, make sure your roof has been inspected and any necessary repairs are completed. Trees and Landscaping - Overhanging branches and unpruned foliage may result in blocked gutters, manholes and downpipes. Make sure they have been properly pruned and can withstand the torrential rains. Make sure to complete any necessary repairs before the rainy season. Keep your unit well ventilated and aired. During Winter, poor ventilation and trapped moisture can result in dampness or mould. Install power wise devices - LED lights, low energy bulbs, rechargeable bulbs and surge protectors can assist during loadshedding. Make sure any power saving methods are in compliance with the property’s distribution board. Conserve energy - Conserve up to 50% of a geyser’s total reheating energy and wrap the geyser with a customised geyser blanket. (If possible) • External drains and manholes - Ensure that all drains have been cleared and are unobstructed. External waterproofing - Look for exterior cracks and trouble spots to prevent moisture or water seepage. • Vacant units - A designated individual should regularly check on the vacant unit. Their checks should include: leaking taps, toilet issues, geyser overflow, and signs of dampness (water ingress).
