ABOUT US

The Animal Welfare Society of South Africa was founded in March 1929. Our organisation is member-based, non-governmental and an autonomous NPO and registered PBO established to ensure the rights, health and welfare of all animals.

For the past 95 years we have been consistent in the execution of our mission – to champion the cause of all animals through:

• Professional veterinary care

• Inspectorate services

• Humane education, Sterilisation, Vaccination and Outreach projects

• Adoption and foster programmes that successfully places many animals in loving forever homes every year

The Society relies almost solely on donations and does not receive state funding.

Humane education as a pro-active animal cruelty preventative measure is pivotal in all we do.

We offer a full range of veterinary services to the underprivileged and disadvantaged communities of the Cape Metro.

From our base in Philippi, we handle about 4 000 animals per month. Our clinic is open 7 days a week to accommodate those who are unable to bring their pets during the week. We have 4 fully-equipped and very busy theatres where we do sterilisations, orthopaedic operations and many other procedures.

At any one time we can house in excess of 175 sick or injured animals. We are committed to sterilising and microchipping every animal that comes through our hospital as part of our contribution towards reducing the number of strays, homeless and unwanted animals in the Cape Metro.

The Society has an Animal Care Centre, where we take in stray, homeless, unwanted, abused, and abandoned animals and find them their forever homes. All animals at the centre are medically assessed, vaccinated, treated for internal and external parasites, microchipped and sterilised before leaving our care.

Our Inspectorate Department responds to daily calls for cases relating to animal cruelty and general neglect of animals, as well as ongoing reported cases of animal fighting in our communities. We often respond to reports of injured stray animals (large and small) on our public roadways by our City’s Traffic Department, SAPS and Law Enforcement. We also assist with the treatment and care of wildlife.

PATRON’S MESSAGE

I am always proud and amazed when I review our year here at AWS.

The continued improvements to our facility and our standing within the community continues to grow.

We gain recognition in the Cape with our impact on sterilisations and work with abandoned and injured animals.

I was inspired by the attendance at our recent get-together of staff, volunteers and donors – so many care about our continued success and progress.

Best wishes

Each year, millions of animals are euthanized at local shelters because of overpopulation. Almost half of the animals brought into these shelters are euthanized because suitable homes can’t be found for them. Animal rescue, a cause close to my heart, can lead to the safety of millions of these lost souls.

My dream is to see a huge increase in education, mass pet sterilisation campaigns, microchipping and less backyard breeding and internet sales of these poor animals.

The abuse of domestic animals is on the increase due to lack of education and the basic needs to survive. The surrendering of pets has increased over the past years, all due to the cost of living too. Affordable veterinary medical care for animals plays a huge role in the neglect and surrendering of animals.

A great big thank you to our amazing Patron Pamela and her husband, Neville Isdell, and AWS SA Ambassador, William Simpson for his amazing donation of a brand new JAC T8 2.0 CTI Super Lux Double Cab Pick-Up. What would we do without your love and passion for our society and animals?

What an amazing and fun project it was relocating and opening up our new AWS SA thrift shop (now based at Hart Nursery in Ottery).

Our very old building on our Hart Nursery property was finally revamped and it was decided that we will incorporate the thrift shop into our new building. Dr Mac kindly donated all the beautiful shelving for our thrift shop and our new adventure began.

Lots of donations have been coming in, keeping our shop nicely stocked. A great big thank you to all who have donated to us – every cent made is there to assist in our feeding and upkeep of the animals in our care.

CHAIRLADY’S REPORT

“Dogs, for a reason that can only be described as divine, have the ability to forgive, let go of the past, and live each day joyously. It’s something the rest of us strive for.”

Last year we had two estates with contents bequeathed to us. This too was lots of fun and all done with dignity, packing up and sorting out what was saleable in our little shop.

The closing of the shop at our Philippi HQ and reopening of our new outlet has proven to be very viable and more manageable by myself and my staff at no extra cost to the society with 100% of the proceeds of all sales going to AWS SA.

I would also like to thank each and everyone for their love, support and passion and amazing donations to AWS SA. There are simply too many to mention!

Lastly, a big thank you to all our amazing passionate staff and volunteers, you guys are the best! To our Executive Committee, Dr Mac and Allan. What an amazing strong team we have behind the scenes. It is an honour to be a part of the amazing team and organisation.

May 2024 be an amazing year for all.

Animal Welfare Society of South Africa Annual Report 2023 9

CEO’S REPORT

During the last financial year, the welfare community has seen some seismic changes in their operating procedures. Several of the larger welfare organisations have had to implement restricted service levels to the general public and their pets. This has resulted in closing over weekends and public holidays to reduce overheads and costs.

The Animal Welfare Society has decided to keep to our vision and mission statements by remaining open 7 days a week. This was achieved by engaging with our staff on a methodology to achieve this result. This has put a strain on our budget forecast with up to a thirty percent increase in staff salaries and drug costs. Over the March month we attended to two hundred and forty-nine emergencies that needed immediate medical intervention.

With the assistance of our ambassadors, fundraising department, Patron, and plethora of supporters, we will continue to make every effort to remain within our projected budget. We are fortunate to have Personal Trust Chairperson, John le Roux as our President and the invaluable input from his company and our accountant Ann Sanders to steer us through this challenging period.

Owning two small fur babies even in a modest income family can cost several hundred Rands a month in feeding, not including basic vaccinations and deworming to minimise zoonotic diseases. Overall, the welfare community has seen a huge increase in the number of surrendered pets due to these financial constraints across the sector we serve.

On the positive side, we were able to install four inverters and solar panels to lessen the impact of loadshedding on our operational needs. We have also been fortunate in having many international volunteers, who spend three to six weeks helping at our facility in Philippi, and some even

Animal Welfare Society of South Africa Annual Report 2023 10

fundraise for our cause upon returning to their own countries. Our outreach program continues to blossom with invitations from corporates and sports events who have nominated us as their preferred beneficiary. In the last year we have been invited to visit the Faircape group of retirement villages thereby bringing much needed distraction and joy to the frail and bed ridden patients who love to interact with our young volunteers, staff and the furries that we bring to them for a morning. This has been a huge success.

Due to the continuing unrest in some of the communities that we service on the Cape Flats, our Inspectorate is in constant danger of being hijacked. Of late we have had to have armed escorts from SAPS to enter these areas as Law Enforcement cannot always assist as they are not armed. It is an alarming reality in the communities that we strive to help.

Maintaining our ageing fleet of vehicles is an ongoing process, and we were fortunate

to be donated a new double cab by William Simpson, who is one of our ambassadors.

Thank you, William, from all the executive and staff.

Our ongoing work would not be possible without the dedicated staff and executive committee, who make sure that we are available to help in any situation that may arise.

Animal Welfare Society of South Africa Annual Report 2023 11

HONORARY TREASURER’S REPORT

The operational income which consists of donations for services rendered and various fundraising initiatives have rejuvenated, and we have seen a 8% increase in funding and donations.

From 2019 to date we had seen a decrease of 15% in income, highlighting the devastating effects that the pandemic had, the loss of income and the loss of disposable income by individuals in order for them to donate to the society.

Despite these enormous challenges faced by the Society we remained in a reasonably stable financial position as a result of the capital fund balance, which is diversely invested and are able to continue providing world class service to those animals in need.

In 2023 our bequest income has remained consistent, and we thank those who leave us a legacy. The breakdown of income is as follows: Bequests making up 49% of income, Vet services making up 30%, other income and Donations making up the remaining 21%.

Overall expenses have seen an increase from prior years. The society has managed to institute various cost saving techniques, so we are able to continue our great work and see only an inflationary 3% increase in expenses, the costs have been strictly managed by the Society. A huge note of thanks to the hard working and dedicated staff on achieving such a significant goal, with the costs of living and supplies ever increasing.

Although the Society has remained stable during 2023, it still operates with an overall deficit, forcing us to use funds from the capital reserves. We greatly appreciate donations and bequests as the Society is dependent on these funds to continue providing its first-class service.

The Annual Financial Statements will be available at the AGM and on request from carmen@awscape.org.za

COMMUNICATIONS, RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT AND FUNDRAISING REPORT

I am pleased to report that our team delivered another impressive performance over the past year.

We broke new ground and for the first time ever applied for funding from the National Lotteries Commission of South Africa. Our carefully considered and well-motivated application is for funding to sterilise, vaccinate and microchip 700 pets from indigent areas on the Cape Flats where the welfare of animals does not appear to be a priority resulting in an explosion of homeless, neglected and abused animals.

The positive impact the successful execution of these Humane Pet Population Management projects will have on the lives of many thousands of needy animals in our enormous area of operation will be huge and we are eager to get going!

We also received the welcoming news of the imminent arrival of another work-ready vehicle donated by the magnanimous William Simpson Motor Group. This robust vehicle will greatly improve our ability to swiftly respond to disasters and meaningfully extend our Outreach and Education teams reach to well beyond the borders of the Cape Metro.

By this time next year, we plan to have our hospital fully computerised. This will bring us into line with international best practise and significantly improve on overall efficiencies.

You will be delighted to know that our cherished friendships continue to flourish with amazingly positive results and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their selfless generosity that means everything to us and the communities we serve.

“The love for all living creatures is the most noble attribute of man.” ~ Charles Darwin

Over the past year we were generously remembered in the Wills of several fallen heroes, enjoyed the support of some of South Africa’s greatest brands and the benevolence of a growing list of trusts and foundations.

We know you have a lot of choices when it comes to donating, and we are so grateful that you chose to donate to our cause. We promise to always be responsible stewards of both your donations and your trust.

We still have a lot of work to do, and your support and donations helps us get that important work done. Very few of our successes would be possible without generous donors like you. Thank you again for your commitment, kindness, support and for your belief in doing good. Many people say they want to help; fewer actually step up to do it. Thank you for being one of the few and stepping up with your important donations.

“A team is not just people who work at the same time in the same place. A real team is a group of very different individuals who enjoy working together to help their organisation achieve its goals and purpose.”

Credit Leadership First.

Thank you for being an indispensable part of our esteemed team.

Ensuring more stories of hope and generosity can be shared, for many more years to come, is one of my top priorities and I hope that we have done enough to secure your continued support so that we can continue touching the lives of countless more animals together.

Thank you!

With much gratitude

HOSPITAL REPORT

As we reflect on the past year, we are humbled by the unwavering support and compassion shown by our community towards our mission of providing affordable veterinary care for animals in need.

Throughout the year, our hospital has been a beacon of hope for animals from diverse backgrounds facing various challenges. From homeless animals seeking refuge to beloved pets requiring urgent medical attention, we have been privileged to serve them all.

At the heart of our hospital’s success is our incredible team led by the dedicated Dr Zhaneta Stoynova. Their commitment to providing exceptional care to every animal that comes through our doors is truly inspiring. Through their tireless efforts and expertise, we have been able to offer a wide range of services, from routine vaccinations to life-saving surgeries, ensuring that each animal receives the best possible treatment.

One of the key pillars of our work is education. We have seen firsthand the devastating consequences of well-meaning but misinformed pet owners feeding their animals inappropriate food such as bones and mielie cobs. These naïve actions can lead to serious health complications, including intestinal blockages, and often result in unnecessary suffering for the animals. Through educational programs and outreach initiatives, we strive to empower pet owners with the knowledge and resources they need to provide proper care for their animals.

We are immensely grateful to our Patron, Pamela Isdell whose generous donations have made a profound positive impact on our ability to care for our patients. Thanks to her support, we were able to acquire a state-of-the-art x-ray unit, which has

revolutionised our diagnostic capabilities. For example, Bunny Jacobs, a white rabbit from Athlone, recently underwent a delicate operation to remove bladder stones, a procedure made possible by the precision of our new x-ray unit. Similarly, Gamat Adamson, an African Grey parrot from Hanover Park, received life-saving treatment for an encapsulating abscess, highlighting the importance and skill of our dedication and world-class care.

In addition to our medical efforts, we remain committed to community outreach through initiatives such as our spay and neuter campaigns. By addressing the root causes of animal overpopulation, we not only improve the welfare of individual animals but also promote healthier and more sustainable communities.

As we look towards the future, we urge you to continue supporting our cause through donations and volunteerism. Your generosity enables us to provide vital care to animals in need and to advocate for their well-being.

Together, we can make a tangible difference in the lives of animals and create a more compassionate world for all.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Dr Z. Stoynova and the Hospital Team

INSPECTORATE REPORT

2023 has been a year for new adventures and innovations, there have been some amazing new developments and achievements. It has also seen the Inspectorate truly expand on disaster response experiences and some very exciting rescues.

The department has acquired several two-way radios for the inspectorate vehicle fleet and our control room, this has greatly increased our instant communication abilities, especially in emergency situations. The radios also offer Global Positioning System (GPS) capabilities, enabling control to live track our vehicles, which adds another level of safety for our inspectors when operating in dangerous areas.

We have also welcomed the acquisition of a Welfare Tracker Application, which allows us to capture the complaint comprehensively and send it to the assigned inspector’s mobile device. It also allows inspectors to capture data on all the animals on a property, upload pictures and generate case reports in addition to many other reporting features. This app essentially acts as an e-diary for the inspector and reflects follow up dates so that no case is left unresolved.

These latest upgrades to the Inspectorate department will further bolster our fight against animal cruelty and its pro-active prevention.

We have also had many instances where our Inspectorate played a pivotal role in rescues and the prosecution of perpetrators of animal cruelty. In August 2023, a distressed owner contacted our Inspectorate to report that their cat was stuck up a very tall tree. Our inspector arrived on the scene and realized that specialized equipment would be required. We contacted the City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue services, who graciously dispatched one of their “cherry picker” rescue vehicles. With this vehicle we were able to safely reach and rescue the cat

and take her to safety at our headquarters. The cat has since been happily reunited with her owner.

We also dealt with a case of cruelty regarding the inhumane chaining of a dog. Upon the cadet inspector’s arrival, he observed that the chain had actually become embedded in the dog’s neck. After issuing multiple warnings, which were not complied with, a Court Order was obtained and the dog was confiscated. The owner was subsequently charged with animal cruelty and has been arrested as a result.

AWS is very proud of its response to the December 2023 Simon’s Town fires and was instrumental in the rescue and care of many companion animals, livestock and wildlife. We have also formed invaluable partnerships with the City’s emergency services after working closely with them on the fire lines. We have a newly established Disaster Response Team which was sent on accredited wildlife training courses that adds a very exciting and new dimension to our disaster response efforts.

Our Inspectorate looks forward to 2024 to further expand on all the experience and knowledge we have gained and will endeavor to further increase our impact in the communities we serve. We plan to conduct more initiatives, such as sterilisation campaigns which are an essential part of preventing unwanted litters and animal cruelty.

Thank you

ANIMAL CARE CENTRE REPORT

Our Adoptions Department strives to find every dog in our care a loving forever home. We never give up hope!

All of the dogs in our care have been through a great deal of hardship, abuse, neglect and even abandonment and they deserve what they were put on this earth for.

They deserve good families who would allow them to bring forth their natural beings of compassion, loyalty and perfect companionship. There is always a happy ending and a loving family out there. We do know that it only takes passion, compassion, patience and love.

We take a look back at Moose and Duke, and the many others who have waited up to three years to find their forever homes. They all eventually stepped right into paradise with the most amazing families.

Moose was brought into our care as a tiny puppy with his mother and siblings. His mother and siblings quickly found their forever families whilst Moose was kept waiting for up to 3 years. He eventually found a family that not long after, returned him because he was behaving like a ‘dog’ in their garden.

Without hesitation, we welcomed him back with open arms. We knew he was amazing and would find a family who would understand that he is a rescue longing for love, patience and understanding and that all of this is new to him and so he did! His new family is absolutely smitten with him.

In 2023 we once again rehomed some of our longest staying dogs to the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. These dogs were born to be jet-setters! We have had some very successful international adoptions.

Many of our volunteers spend their time with the dogs in our care and of course they ‘fall in love’.

We would love to use this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude towards:

• Our international and local volunteers

• Our super talented pet photographer Jackie Wernberg who takes amazing photographs of the dogs and puppies in our care

• The Faircape Property Group for allowing us to be part of their compassionate family

• Under the Trees market for hosting our adoption pop-up events aimed at finding our dogs and puppies their forever homes

• All our selfless donors, big and small, for enabling us to make a huge positive difference to the lives of the pets entrusted to our care.

Thank you

From the desk of the Executive Mayor of Cape Town

Dear Friends at the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa,

I hope this message finds you well.

Unfortunately, I won’t be able to join you at your Supporter and Appreciation Lunch due to a prior commitment, but I wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude for the remarkable work the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa is doing in our City.

Your commitment to providing veterinary services to underprivileged communities, including sterilisations, surgeries, and care for sick or injured animals, is truly commendable.

On a personal note, I must share that I am a proud owner of dogs and I understand first-hand the joy and companionship they bring. Your efforts in finding loving homes for them and other animals resonate deeply with me.

Your adoption initiatives, with thorough assessments and necessary medical procedures, contribute immensely to ensuring these animals find caring homes. I am grateful that we could have contributed to this important work in a small way.

While I regret not being able to attend the event, I extend my best wishes for its success and look forward to the opportunity to personally express my gratitude in the future.

Best regards,

The Five Freedoms of Animals

The Five Freedoms are the Gold standard that we, as animal owners and carers, must understand and apply to ensure that the welfare of animals is provided for.

These standards are internationally recognised and are not just about the things that we want to do for our animals, but also the actions we must take in order to be responsible and caring pet owners.

1. Freedom from hunger and thirst by ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigour.

2. Freedom from discomfort by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area.

3. Freedom from pain, injury or disease by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment.

4. Freedom to express (most) normal behaviour by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal’s own kind.

5. Freedom from fear and distress by ensuring conditions and treatment that avoid mental suffering.

In The Company Of Best Friends

Mike Vietri, the CEO of Faircape Property Group, joined our esteemed panel of ambassadors on 17 March 2021.

Upon acceptance of office Mike had this to say: “I am looking forward to promoting the vision and helping the wonderful people involved in the Animal Welfare Society. On a daily basis staff are involved in the really difficult and stressful task of looking after those that have no voice. We salute you and whatever we can do to make your task easier to alleviate animal suffering will be a pleasure”.

It is a well-known fact that Mike’s selfless contributions have bettered the lives of thousands of animals and prevented countless litters of unwanted puppies and kittens from being born into lives of hardship. He and his team are without exception animal welfare heroes who recognise the undeniable benefits of the companionship and unconditional love of a pet.

His visionary leadership has placed the Faircape Property Group in a sought-after league as one of only a very few pet friendly retirement estates.

As further evidence of their compassion for animals and wanting the best for their residents and patients, Faircape recently introduced an Animal-Assisted Therapy and Companionship Initiative of which we are very proud to be a part.

Over the past year we got to make loads of new friends and spend quality time with some of the residents of Faircape property group's magnificent, pet friendly Cle Du Cap, Tokai Health and Onrus Manor estates.

These visits have become a firm favourite on our busy events calendar and have proved to be so mutually beneficial that we decided to

make them a permanent monthly outing on the last Thursday of every month. "Some of the residents refer to our canine companions as "dog-tors" that bring them an abundance of joy and comfort and for us this is the ultimate validation that canine care therapy is undeniably good for everyone as well as our dogs who lap up the attention and spoils" said Allan Perrins spokesman for AWS SA.

The residents and carers take great delight in meeting, cuddling and when presented with the opportunity naming the pets that accompany us on these enjoyable outings.

We have also had the privilege of hosting several residents and staff at our facility in Philippi. They without exception enjoyed the visit and abundance of hairy hugs and muddy pawprints.

“You can see everyone’s face light-up when they get chosen as the lap to cuddle up on or, tummy to tickle. They love the interaction and opportunity to converse, reminisce and pet the animals” says Animal Care Centre Supervisor Lawrence Nkotha.

We are extremely proud to be a part of a community who joins forces for the love of animals, and wish to offer our continued support for this amazing initiative that has brought so much joy and happiness to so many people and so many pets.

OUTsurance goes the extra mile for animals

At the 2023 OUTsurance Gun Run prize giving we were presented with a cheque for R126 676 that will once again be invested in our Pet Sterilisation and Outreach projects.

This brings the total contribution by OUTsurance, the Atlantic Athletic Club and individual runners to just under a quarter of a million Rand since our selection as the race’s charity beneficiary last year.

This outstanding collaboration and magnanimous generosity has already and will continue to positively impact the lives of hundreds of pets on the Cape Flats.

We are extremely grateful to have earned the generous benevolence of such selfless partners and iconic brands and look forward to a continuation of this amazing partnership for many years to come.

Gentle hands, kind words and soft hearts

It does not matter if it’s midnight … on a Sunday … or public holiday – if a call comes in about an animal in distress, our Inspectors will respond. Because animals don’t know that it’s after-hours or a public holiday.

They only know that they are in pain, terrified or lost … after suffering a beating, being abandoned or fleeing for their lives and need our help. Every second that passes feels like a lifetime!

That’s why our Inspectors are committed to responding as quickly as they can to reports of animal cruelty and suffering. These dedicated Warriors work around-the-clock and don’t get much rest!

And whilst the animals are always pleased to see them, the same can’t be said of their abusers and tormentors. That is why your support means so much.

Knowing there are caring individuals like you, who would also never refuse to help an animal in need …. or be their voice motivates them to soldier on and provides them with the means to continue their life-saving work.

Because it takes money to keep our vehicles on the road … ready to respond at a moment’s notice … it takes money to cover the care bills … and money to apprehend perpetrators.

Your contributions have already made a huge positive difference. Thanks to you we have found loving homes for thousands of pets and released many wild animals back into the wild.

And as long as there are animals in need, we will need money to rescue and care for them. So PLEASE will you donate towards their lifesaving work today?

Animal Welfare Society of South Africa Annual Report 2023 32

Legacy Leave a

This year 49% of our income came from bequests and you may be wondering how you can help animals when you no longer share their world.

Right now, more animals than ever need our help. Too many animals are still suffering and dying and we don’t have enough money to rescue them all.

Making a bequest to the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa is an uncomplicated way to continue to protect animals long into the future.

Your Will is much more than a legal document. It is your opportunity to make a statement about your beliefs and values and to leave a lasting legacy that will make a lasting difference for animals.

Bequests do not need to be large sums. Any amount can make a significant difference to our work and we are committed to respecting our testators wishes and honouring their legacy for the welfare of animals.

Please call or email Allan Perrins on (021) 692 2626 or allanperrins@awscape.org.za to find out how to join our Legacy Society.

All donations, no matter how big or small, help us to continue to be the voice for the voiceless.

If you would like to make a donation, you can do so to our fundraising account or via our SnapScan link.

Alternatively, sign up for a monthly debit order: https://linkserv.emandate.co.za/AWSSA/

We always need donations of food, blankets and newspapers for our hospital patients.
