doctor is seen striding into the somber and dimly lit ward of patients Carter and Edward. In his hands is a much-dreaded report sheet – Edward’s treatment result.

The news isn’t good. Edward has at most, six months to live. Despite the tragic revelation, Carter gathers up every remaining ounce of optimism and pulls out a yellow piece of paper… it is his ‘Bucket List’, which he intended to share with Edward. Before he could jot down anything, the doctor swiftly turns to Carter and broke the news. “You have at the most one year to live,” he utters monotonously. Carter crumples up the paper and throws it on the floor.

A snippet from the film The Bucket List, that’s how two cancer ward roomies’ – one an irascible billionaire, the other a scholarly mechanic – paths crossed after they were dropped the bad news. They react by composing a bucket list – things to do before they kick the bucket – and headed off for the around-the-world adventure of their lives. The film quite successfully refocused people’s priority towards living and experiencing life to the fullest.

Looking around, there is no end of websites for those wanting to compile and share their ambitions, with a whole industry having shaped around the notion of cramming in eye-popping, hedonic experiences before you die: skydiving, mountain climbing, partying in Tomorrowland Festival, swimming with dolphins and meeting rock stars.

Such aspirations are also the basis of the best-selling books listing the 1,001 films you should watch, the 1,001 albums you should listen to and all the wonderful places in the world you should visit before falling off your perch.

Why a Bucket List?

As the year draws to an end, we pass the remainder of the year’s days with adventurous dreams and carefully crafted outing plans, while nights roar on with endless laughter and mamak sessions. Yet somehow, we lose track of time and fail to notice the days slipping away, until one day we wake up and New Year’s Eve is upon us (say what?). We blinked and those previous weeks sailed by as our list of adventurous plans lie unfulfilled with scattered check marks.

If we don’t live our days by clear personal goals and plans, chances are we would spend most of our days caught up in the mundane. This is when the notion of bucket list enters the picture; it serves as a reminder to maximise every moment of our existence and live life to the fullest.

Sure, goal setting may already be a staple activity, but it is typically framed within a social context and expectations (regardless of performance, career or health). On the contrary, a bucket list provides an avenue to set anything and everything we’ve ever wanted to do; be it big, small or random. Bungee jumping?

Check. Power a Shelby Mustang around a racetrack? Check. Gaze at the Great Pyramid of Khufu? Check.

A List to Live/Die For or Just A List of Banal, Wannabe stuff?

Undoubtedly, The Bucket List wasn’t the first film that tapped into the theme of

mortality and what we do with the finite time we’re given. Over the years, many films and books too have delved into this topic and make us ponder on the choices we pick in life. While many embrace the idea of bucket list along with its rad intentions, some unfortunately are merely hopping onto the bandwagon. Part of the setback is when people perceive the idea as carrying an innate air of competition; of striving to best others besides bettering themselves. In many ways, it’s no surprise that the trend has risen in popularity considering that we are in an era where self-branding is highly valued. Just think of how we utilise our Facebook page as a shop window for our achievement-rich lives.

Rather than treating it as a commercialised cultural experience in which every potential expedition and every lofty goal is reduced to an item on a checklist to be ticked off, why not go the other way? Forget about referring to websites like bucketlist.org (where participants create their own list of

Entrepreneur From TVC personality to an esteemed shoe entrepreneur, Fiqa Liyana Chong has impressively transcended herself beyond the portrait of “another pretty face” to an accomplished lady as she initiated her venture into foldable footwear.

W

hile you might recognise this alluring face from nationally syndicated TV commercials, you may not know that Fiqa Liyana Chong is also armed with the fervour of entrepreneurship and has been making giant strides in her own line of footwear, FIQS. A lady of grandiose ambitions, Fiqa is now relentlessly pursuing her dream of building an international footwear brand right from the heart of Kuala Lumpur. Since its inception, FIQS has been making significant progress especially since its expansion to Hong Kong. We turn to Fiqa as she spills the beans on her start-up.

C+: Thank you for having a career chat with us, Fiqa. First off, please tell us more about your very own line of footwear, FIQS. F: My pleasure. FIQS is a foldable footwear exclusively handmade for ladies who are always on the go and relish travelling to new places. It’s all about being fun and energetic, hence the first batch of our collection is made up of vibrant and striking colours. The business kick-started while I was still a student in Upper Iowa University.

C+: How did you get your idea or concept for starting up FIQS? F: As a commercial talent, my job naturally demands me to constantly be on my feet all day. From filming on set to attending events, there’s rarely a day that would pass by without me donning a pair of high heels.

Coupled with my hectic schedules and the fact that I am always on the go, it can be quite a pain to walk around in heels for an extended period of time. Of course, the least glamorous part is when the aching sinks in. In the past, I used to shamelessly haul slippers in my handbag but inconvenient factor aside, I also don’t look presentable whenever I need to swap to slippers. Let’s be honest, the combination of a neat ensemble with slippers is really not something to shout about.

That’s when I thought to myself hey, why not create my own foldable shoes that are compact and yet comfortable at the same time? I went all out with the idea and that’s how FIQS was conceived. Now, it is possible for ladies like us to gracefully swap shoes and grant our feet the much-needed rest before flaunting those killer stilettoes again.

C+: As FIQS shoes are uniquely handcrafted, can you walk us through the design process?

F: At the beginning of every process, I would always throw in a good amount of time in order to come up with the sketches. Once I am through with that, I typically visit several leather markets in order to scout for the perfect material and the next step will be to send in everything for the first prototype.

After several rounds of amendments to further improve on the details, I will finally give the green light for production to begin. Instead of using machines, each of FIQS’ shoe is carefully sewn by the hand of our artisans.

C+: As an entrepreneur and a prolific TVC talent, how do you manage to juggle everything (are you a superwoman)?

F: Time management is the key. Every night before I hit the sack, I will always meticulously plan and lay out my schedule for the upcoming day; what I should do, where and when would my meetings take place. By planning them accordingly, I get to set my priorities right. Time is precious to me and it is truly something that I hold on to dearly. With time, once it’s gone, it’s gone. It’s irreversible and the time wasted will never come back. Hence, whenever I plan my schedule, I always make sure I stick to it.

Of course, there are times where I may get distracted. In order to give myself a little bit of leeway, I also set a time limit for each of the tasks in my schedule.

C+: As a budding young entrepreneur in Malaysia, what are the challenges you have faced so far?

F: Knowing that it’s not a plain sailing journey, I am always prepared to be bombarded with

challenges. However, perhaps one of the trickiest hurdles that I’ve encountered so far is the challenge in assembling the right team to run FIQS. Working in a startup venture is certainly not a piece of cake. One has to possess not just a multitude of skills but also most importantly, the right attitude and passion in order to go far in this industry. Having to work in a fast-paced environment that demands multi-tasking is one that is inevitably stressful but with the right mind-set, it can be very rewarding. In this sense, it’s a little tough to lock down talents who are up for such thrilling challenges.

C+: What’s next on your agenda with FIQS for the year 2016?

F: We’re looking forward to expand FIQS (woot woot). As of now, we have already enlisted three new marketplaces around other Asian countries.

We are also in the midst of launching a myriad of new designs for FIQS’ footwear.

C+: On a lighter note, what’s your vice?

F: Shoes! I can never get enough of them.

C+: If you had one piece of advice to aspiring entrepreneurs, what would it be?

F: Set your goals in a timeline. This way, you would know when you will achieve them. Do everything one step at a time and trust me, you’ll get there. After all, every pro was once a beginner, the point is to just do it and you will learn as you grow. Also, always stay humble!

Ahh... Ice cream. Everyone’s favourite dessert, especially on a hot day. Join us as we take a look at the cold, cold world of ice cream and marvel at the chilling variety on offer.

The Ice Cream Familyv 1. Hard Ice Cream

This is the fancy name for the traditional or regular ice cream that you can easily get anywhere and everywhere. And they come in an endless variety of delicious flavours.

As you may well be aware, gelato is the Italian word for ice cream that comprises milk, cream, sugar and sometimes, egg yolks. We wouldn’t be surprised if you love gelato more than any other types of ice cream as it has a more intense flavour that can easily melt your heart. Furthermore, gelato is relatively lower in calories, fat and sugar than ice cream.

Don’t you feel nostalgic when you think about the ice cream potong that you always had when you were young? You may not know this, but it is actually made of coconut milk, skimmed milk, corn starch and sugar as basic ingredients, together with flavours like red bean, yam, durian and countless more.

In addition, ice cream potong is cut from a big block of ice cream cube and served on a wooden stick. Simple and sweet.

Rado unveils new Ceramica designed by Konstantin Grcic

eramica, a timepiece known for its striking linear shape and visionary use of high-tech ceramic, has been redesigned by renowned industrial designer Konstantin Grcic. In this new design, one of Rado’s most recognizable high-tech ceramic timepieces has been given a contemporary interpretation while retaining the strong geometric shape that made the original such a classic.

Like the original upon which it is based, the new Ceramica is a high-tech ceramic timepiece for both men and women who appreciate purist, modern aesthetics. The linear bracelet silhouette of the original has evolved into a more classic watch shape, with the gently curved edges of the monobloc case taking center stage. Advances in technology, together with Grcic’s vision, have given rise to this masterful combination of form

and material, which finds expression in the eleven models that make up the new Ceramica collection.

Precision and modernity, reimagined Two gents’ models offer a matt take on the Ceramica, previously best known in its high gloss iteration. Limited to just 701 pieces, Konstantin Grcic’s signature model stands out not only because of its velvety matt finish, but also thanks to the creative use of typography on the dial. “In my opinion, the matt finish brings out the form of the watch much stronger,” says Grcic. “The design of the dials is bold and legible. I took inspiration from pilot watches – I like them for their straightforward, clear graphics.”

Fans of subdials can opt for the matt model featuring a small second counter, with grey printed indexes adding to the monochrome minimalist appeal.

Female aficionados of the avant-garde look have several models to choose from, including two diamond-studded pieces in a choice of either glossy black or white high-tech ceramic.

Boasting silver coloured detailing and four diamonds on the dial, the ladies’ Ceramica offers the same high-impact presence on the wrist, but in a smaller form factor.

As the name suggests, the Ceramica is crafted from high-tech ceramic, a material favoured among many high-end watchmakers for its exceptional properties. “Materials are definitely key,” says Grcic. “The intelligent and economical use of material forms an important part of my understanding of good design. Ceramic is one of the most high-tech materials I know. The material is lighter than stainless steel, it has a much more pleasant temperature when you wear it, and it is scratch resistant.”

About Konstantin Grcic Konstantin Grcic is one of the world’s foremost industrial designers. He has developed furniture, lighting, accessories and housewares for leading brands, with many of his products receiving prestigious international design awards. Known for his passion for technology and materials, Grcic was a natural choice for the 2016 redesign of the iconic Rado Ceramica. Famed for his pared-down pieces, Grcic is often referred to as a minimalist, but the designer himself prefers to speak of simplicity.

1.What is your relation to time / watches?

I have a strong sense of time. I would even go so far as to claim that time really matters to me. Timing is discipline, but also something quite sensual, elegant. The right timing plays a key role in life. I have always been very aware of that. I got my first watch when I was six years old and I have been wearing watches ever since. I get up and put it on; I go to bed and take it off.

2. Rado is known as a pioneer in material innovation – how important are materials in your work as a designer?

Materials are definitely key. Everything we design has a physical dimension. What is something made of, and how? The right choice of a material determines a product´s performance and longevity. And even before that, it determines how something is produced, which is a crucial business consideration. I am not a materials expert, by no means, but I have a huge interest in and curiosity about understanding as much about materials as possible. The more I know about them, including their constraints, the more efficiently I can apply them. The intelligent and economical use of material forms an important part of my understanding of good design.

3. It’s impressive to see the variety of products and projects you have developed in your career – you must have many opportunities for collaborations. What prompted you to accept Rado’s invitation for this project?

Collaborations between designers and industry always work on different levels. When I first met the Rado team, there was a pleasant chemistry between us. A solid personal relationship is the foundation of any successful collaboration.

Working for any Swiss watch brand is quite unique, but the thing about Rado was that they brought their very own high-tech ceramic technology into the equation. Of course I was very tempted by that.

4. What was your inspiration / idea for the redesign of the Rado Ceramica?

The redesign of a classic is always a challenging brief. As a designer, you take on a clear responsibility not to spoil the legacy of the original.

The design process forces you to decide how close to stay with the original, and how far to depart from it. The original Ceramica still looks pretty amazing today. It is absolutely iconic and pure and that clearly inspired my new design – not only in a formal sense, but also in terms of its uncompromising attitude. I chose to approach the project from a very subjective point of view. I asked myself: what would change the original Ceramica into a watch that I would wear today?

5. The edition is limited to 701 pieces – is there a significance for you behind this number?

Rado suggested making 700 pieces of the watch. I added the extra one as my own personal copy.

6. What were the challenges compared to other products you’ve designed before?

The real challenge for me was the scale. A watch is just so much smaller than any of the other things we normally design. On the computer we zoom up to ten times the original scale of the watch in order to evaluate the smallest details, proportions etc. You’re hardly ever working on the watch in 1:1 scale like we do with a chair or other products. Watches are about details in the smallest scale – 0.2 mm, or 0.25 mm. It is very difficult to comprehend those nuances, but they matter a lot.

Between my two fingers I can gauge 2 mm, 3 mm, 4 mm – I know exactly what they mean. In contrast, a dimension of 0.05 mm is very difficult to grasp. It was like learning a completely new language.

7. What was it like working with Rado?

Rado are experts in their field. They are part of the watch industry, which is a very specialised industry. What’s so nice about working with companies like that is that they know everything about what they do. They’re extremely focused and professional. I find great pleasure in that. In the particular case of Rado, there is the high-tech ceramic technology. They’ve developed that technology for watchmaking and therefore have an incredible know-how about it. Ceramic is one of the most high-tech materials I know. And at Rado they have a long history working with it. Most Rado watches are made in high-tech ceramic, not metal.

The ceramic is injection moulded under very high pressure, which creates an extremely hard and dense end result. This type of ceramic cannot be compared with that used in tableware. It’s a whole different thing. High-tech ceramic watches are extremely tough – harder than stainless steel. The material is lighter than stainless steel, it has a much more pleasant temperature when you wear it, and it is scratch resistant. The ceramic powder can be blended with colour pigments to create different tonalities. It can be polished to have a complete mirror finish or a satin matt finish, which is what I personally prefer.

CYCLE LIKE A PRO, RIDE ON! As you look outside of the window on a breezy evening and you are planning for some light workout but want to steer away from socializing in the park after a very hard days dealing with works, you know you want to ride a bicycle, listening to your favorite tunes and go as far as you can from everything for a while.

But before get all healthy, be sure to check on the correct breathing technique and some fundamental tips on proper bicycle set up to avoid muscle pain and to maximize your riding experience like a pro.

Deep Belly Breathing First you’ll have to check on the breathing techniques every cyclist practice while cycling. You don’t want to get tired quickly at the half miles of your pedaling. Here’s a quick test. Look down and take a deep breath.

Does your chest expand like Popeye the Sailorman? It means you are doing it wrong!

The right breathing techniques is to fill the 1/3 of your lung by using your belly then followed by expanding rib cage for more air for the lungs. This way, you will inhale more oxygen for the muscles tissue and brain, thus exhaling more carbon dioxide. It will help maintaining the acid/base balance in the body by increasing oxygen flow and decreasing carbon dioxide – carbon dioxide increases acidity levels and larger quantities are created during exercise) Remember to breathe through your nose, not mouth to avoid a quicker fatigue.

Bicycle Setup This might be a little bit tricky because most of us think that all bikes are the same. No, it is not. Different height needs different bicycle.

This is the reason why most people thin cycling is not for them for suffering from aches and pain.

Saddle Height Basically, you want to adjust your saddle to the same height or slightly an inch higher to your handlebar. A low saddle will force rider’s pealing depending in a limited range of the quadriceps and makes it difficult to recruit the hamstrings. The hip-knee-ankle should be at the angle of 145-155 degrees for maximum strokes.

Fore-Aft Saddle Position The fore aft saddle position corresponds to how close or how far the seat is in relation to the handlebars. This positioning is important because it affects your balance as well as your overall comfort level, power and efficiency. If your saddle is too far back, you will have a lot of power on the flat surface but will hurt your knees as you climbing the hills; you might have to be in a standing position at the climbing time. It is much better to adjust the saddle suits for both courses if you’re an avid cyclist.

Right Gear and Attire Be sure you don’t wear a too baggy clothes for riding comfy and choose the right shoes with arch supports to avoid feet injury especially if you have flat feet. Don’t forget your helmets!

1.What is your relation to time / watches?

I have a strong sense of time. I would even go so far as to claim that time really matters to me. Timing is discipline, but also something quite sensual, elegant. The right timing plays a key role in life. I have always been very aware of that. I got my first watch when I was six years old and I have been wearing watches ever since. I get up and put it on; I go to bed and take it off.

Limited to just 701 pieces, Konstantin Grcic’s signature model stands out not only because of its velvety matt finish, but also thanks to the creative use of typography on the dial. “In my opinion, the matt finish brings out the form of the watch much stronger,” says Grcic. “The design of the dials is bold and legible. I took inspiration from pilot watches – I like them for their straightforward, clear graphics.”

Fans of subdials can opt for the matt model featuring a small second counter, with grey printed indexes adding to the monochrome minimalist appeal.

Female aficionados of the avant-garde look have several models to choose from, including two diamond-studded pieces in a choice of either glossy black or white high-tech ceramic.

Boasting silver coloured detailing and four diamonds on the dial, the ladies’ Ceramica offers the same high-impact presence on the wrist, but in a smaller form factor.

As the name suggests, the Ceramica is crafted from high-tech ceramic, a material favoured among many high-end watchmakers for its exceptional properties. “Materials are definitely key,” says Grcic. “The intelligent and economical use of material forms an important part of my understanding of good design. Ceramic is one of the most high-tech materials I know. The material is lighter than stainless steel, it has a much more pleasant temperature when you wear it, and it is scratch resistant.”

2. Rado is known as a pioneer in material innovation – how important are materials in your work as a designer?

Materials are definitely key. Everything we design has a physical dimension. What is something made of, and how? The right choice of a material determines a product´s performance and longevity. And even before that, it determines how something is produced, which is a crucial business consideration. I am not a materials expert, by no means, but I have a huge interest in and curiosity about understanding as much about materials as possible. The more I know about them, including their constraints, the more efficiently I can apply them. The intelligent and economical use of material forms an important part of my understanding of good design.

3. It’s impressive to see the variety of products and projects you have developed in your career – you must have many opportunities for collaborations. What prompted you to accept Rado’s invitation for this project?

Collaborations between designers and industry always work on different levels. When I first met the Rado team, there was a pleasant chemistry between us. A solid personal relationship is the foundation of any successful collaboration.

Working for any Swiss watch brand is quite unique, but the thing about Rado was that they brought their very own high-tech ceramic technology into the equation. Of course I was very tempted by that.

4. What was your inspiration / idea for the redesign of the Rado Ceramica?

6. What were the challenges compared to other products you’ve designed before?

The real challenge for me was the scale. A watch is just so much smaller than any of the other things we normally design. On the computer we zoom up to ten times the original scale of the watch in order to evaluate the smallest details, proportions etc. You’re hardly ever working on the watch in 1:1 scale like we do with a chair or other products. Watches are about details in the smallest scale – 0.2 mm, or 0.25 mm. It is very difficult to comprehend those nuances, but they matter a lot.

Between my two fingers I can gauge 2 mm, 3 mm, 4 mm – I know exactly what they mean. In contrast, a dimension of 0.05 mm is very difficult to grasp. It was like learning a completely new language.

7. What was it like working with Rado?

Rado are experts in their field. They are part of the watch industry, which is a very specialised industry. What’s so nice about working with companies like that is that they know everything about what they do. They’re extremely focused and professional. I find great pleasure in that. In the particular case of Rado, there is the high-tech ceramic technology. They’ve developed that technology for watchmaking and therefore have an incredible know-how about it. Ceramic is one of the most high-tech materials I know. And at Rado they have a long history working with it. Most Rado watches are made in high-tech ceramic, not metal.

The ceramic is injection moulded under very high pressure, which creates an extremely hard and dense end result. This type of ceramic cannot be compared with that used in tableware. It’s a whole different thing. High-tech ceramic watches are extremely tough – harder than stainless steel. The material is lighter than stainless steel, it has a much more pleasant temperature when you wear it, and it is scratch resistant. The ceramic powder can be blended with colour pigments to create different tonalities. It can be polished to have a complete mirror finish or a satin matt finish, which is what I personally prefer.

The design process forces you to decide how close to stay with the original, and how far to depart from it. The original Ceramica still looks pretty amazing today. It is absolutely iconic and pure and that clearly inspired my new design – not only in a formal sense, but also in terms of its uncompromising attitude. The heat wasn’t too intense, so there’s nothing to worry about.After 30 minutes, I still felt the burning, but the intensity decreased gradually after that.

It’s recommended to use it twice per day after showering.

And it doesn’t take even 1 minute for me to massage it on my belly, so this is something i can follow daily since it would not take out much time.

After a week of using the serum, I am glad to share my result here! My waist measurement tells me that I have successfully reduced 2cm. That is an awesome result for me since I love Malaysian food. My target is not too ambitious but just to lose 5cm, which is about 2 inches.
