Lifespan is an Advocate for the Ages
The organization serves older adults and their caretakers Mosaic Health: Building a Healthy Community
After a long and challenging winter, the arrival of summer is a welcome change. Just as the seasons shift, so, too, do the seasons of business – and Ontario County is home to a diverse and thriving business landscape, from advanced manufacturing and agriculture to hospitality, health care and beyond. At the Ontario County Chamber of Commerce, we’re here to support and amplify the hard work of these businesses.
In this post-COVID era, we’ve seen the power of in-person connections. Our Chamber hosts a variety of networking events designed to foster meaningful, organic relationships that drive business-tobusiness growth.
Running a business involves more than daily operations – it means navigating complex government regulations, healthcare costs, infrastructure needs, environmental concerns and workforce challenges. The Chamber is a strong advocate for our business community, engaging in efforts such as letter writing, organizing State of the State and State of the County forums and participating in advocacy days in Albany to ensure our local business voices are heard.
Employees are the heart of every business. Investing in people leads to stronger company culture, greater productivity, and increased employee satisfaction. Our 10-month Leadership Ontario program helps develop local talent personally and professionally, delivering lasting value to participants and their employers. We’re proud to launch the fourth year of this impactful initiative in Fall 2025.
Small businesses make up 98 percent of all businesses in New York, and Ontario County reflects that trend. The Chamber is proud to provide the support and resources these businesses need to succeed.
Looking forward,
Tracey Dello Stritto President & CEO Ontario County Chamber
“We take the fear and anxiety out of dentistry & provide a clear path to solving problems.”
Becoming a dentist isn't easy. It takes years of study, the ability to pass rigorous exams, and a steady hand to match a sharp mind. But for Dr. Gabriela Carranza, becoming a dentist wasn't the end of the road. She continued to study advanced dentistry for an additional eight years, specializing in prosthodontics and implant surgery.
Dr. Carranza's addiction to learning more to better serve her patients fueled her to become a Prosthodontist. Since 2015 she has served as an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Rochester's Eastman Institute for Oral Health. In 2018 she became the owner of Victor Prosthodontics.
If you've never heard of the term 'Prosthodontist' before, not to worry, you aren't alone. The title itself is a mouthful. However, in the world of dentistry, Prosthodontists are dental specialists who have completed at least 3 years of a prosthodontics residency program after completing the initial 4 years of dental school.
Experts at cosmetic and restorative dentistry, they are often referred challenging cases by other dentists and closely collaborate with them. Services Prosthodontists provide include crowns, hybrids, dentures, implants, bridges, veneers and TMJ solutions.
WHAT HAPPENS THE FIRST TIME I SEE A PROSTHODONT I ST?
" At the first visit to Victor Prosthodontics, either Dr. Carranza or Dr. Kahn will begin by completing a full review of your medical and dental history, including evaluating your diagnostic images. They will also spend time with you to understand your treatment goals - learning more about the outcome that you are looking to achieve. This allows the doctors to create a a customized treatment plan according to your needs.
As a patient at Victor Prosthodontics you can take comfort knowing that Dr. Carranza and Dr. Kahn are highly trained specialists who are skilled at treating even the most challenging cases."
HOW IS A PROSTHODONTIST DIFFERENT FROM A GENERAL DENTIST?
"We tend to go beyond the standard 'bread and butter' dentistry. "We treat patients who have genetic disorders, trauma or neglect, and instead of focusing on a single tooth we evaluate the whole mouth – and thus provide solutions to complex problems."
WH O NE EDS A PROSTHODONT I ST?
“In addition to difficult cases we also see patients who ha ven’t had a great dental experience in the past and are in need of a second opinion.
We take the fear and anxiety out of dentistry for our patients and provide a clear path to solving their problems."
Ontario County Chamber of Commerce is a membership organization of more than 500 businesses. As a full-time community liaison, the Chamber works with area employers, entrepreneurs, governments and agencies to support tourism, a healthy business climate and responsible economic growth.

As the summer sunshine reflects off of the lakes, boaters take to the water. On warmer days, the glistening Finger Lakes become populated with vessels large and small – from kayaks and stand-up paddleboards to pontoons and fishing boats. Whether you’re looking to buy, rent or upkeep your watercraft, there are a few Canandaigua boat dealers who have you covered.
Ontario County encompasses five of the 11 Finger Lakes, offering plenty of opportunities for water activities. Here’s a look at the county’s lakes and how you can access them.
Hemlock Lake stretches 7 miles in length, measures half a mile wide and is 91 feet deep at its lowest point. There are public boat launch points at the lake’s northeast corner off of Rix Road and at the southeast corner off of Route 15A. Swimming is not allowed in this lake.
Seager Marine in Canandaigua has a wide selection of boats for cruising, lounging, fishing and surfing along with full boat services, winter storage, a watersports shop and more. Brands include Scout Center Console, Nautique, Avalon and Lund.
For those who want to enjoy a day on the water without having to purchase their own watercrafts, Seager Marine offers boat and slip rentals. Pontoon boats, bow riders and typical open bow cruiser boats are available to rent by the day or week; the rental fleet is kept up to date, with most boats being 1 to 2 years old.
Seager Marine’s captained charters use the same boats as rentals as well as luxury pontoon or watersports boats, depending on the customer’s preference. The charters typically last half or full days, piloted by a licensed captain.
German Brothers Marina proudly sells Cobalt – high-end boats for surfing and cruising – along with a selection of used boats. Services include outboard engine maintenance and repair for Mercury, Volvo and Yamaha brands; dockside fuel; summer and winter storage; and parts.
Meanwhile, German Brothers Marina rents out pontoon boats exclusively for half, full and multiple days. Its rental fleet is also updated every one to two years.
Mark’s Leisure Time Marine accommodates every type of boater. Affordable, new and used vessels for sale include pontoons, bowriders and wake boats; the dealer also offers center consoles. Featured brands are Barletta, Harris, Chris Craft, Sea Ray, Mastercraft, Bayliner and Sportsman.
Rentals – including pontoons, kayaks and stand-up paddle boards that are brand new every season – are only available on Conesus Lake.
Mark’s Leisure Time Marine is putting the finishing touches on a service center expansion in Canandaigua. It offers full detailing, indoor and outdoor storage, motor and fiberglass repairs, maintenance and more.
Make the most of your boat
Buying your first boat is a big decision to make, but can lead to many great experiences with family and friends.
A good relationship with a boat dealer is key, said Alex Naeye of Mark’s Leisure Time Marine. In addition to selling vessels, dealers can help new boaters learn how to hitch, trailer, launch and dock their boat. They can also assist with regular maintenance needs.
“A good boat dealership will hone in on a boat that matches your specific needs, so when you are on the water, you feel like you have
Canadice Lake is the smallest of the Finger Lakes, as it’s 3 miles long, 0.3 miles wide and 95 feet deep. Ironically, its name is derived from “skaneadice,” Iroquois for “long lake.” There is a gravel ramp for boats on the east side of the lake near the intersection of Canadice and Birch Hill roads. A cartop launch is available at the south end as well. Swimming is not allowed in this lake.
Honeoye Lake is the second smallest and shallowest of the Finger Lakes with a length of 4.5 miles, width of 0.8 miles and only 30 feet deep. Its name, from the Seneca, means “where the finger lies.” There are a couple of launch points to choose from. Honeoye Lake Public Boat Launch is at the southeast corner of the lake off of East Lake Road. The second location is Sandy Bottom Park at the northwest corner of the lake off of Sandy Bottom Road; swimming is permitted at this park.
Canandaigua Lake is 15.5 miles long, 1.5 miles wide, 276 feet deep and home to one of the region’s two islands, called Skenoh Island – Seneca for “peace.” The Seneca name Canandaigua means “the chosen spot.” There are multiple access and launch points along the lake, including Kershaw Park, the Route 21 Parking Area, Canandaigua Lake State Marine Park, Woodville on Route 21, West River off Route 245 and Onanda Park on West Lake Road. Swimming spots can be found at Deep Run Beach, Kershaw Park, Onanda Park, Vine Valley Beach and West Lake School House Park.
Seneca Lake is the deepest and one of the longest of the Finger Lakes – it ties with Cayuga Lake for the title. It reaches 38 miles in length, is about 3 miles long and 618 deep. The lake is so large it extends into four counties. The one boat launch in Ontario County can be found Geneva Lakefront Park off Route 5 and 20. Nearby launch and swimming sites include Seneca Lake and Sampson state parks.
everything you need and everything you don’t,” said Naeye. “To make the most out of your boat, you need to be in the boat that’s made for you.”
John Holland of Seager Marine recommends first-time buyers go out on the water and experience the boat they’re looking to purchase before making the sale. Additionally, boat training courses help ensure safety and teach boaters to understand their surroundings; the New York Boater’s Safety Course is offered online and at many in-person locations, including Seager Marine.
“Proper service and maintenance are key to avoid downtime and service problems,” Holland said. “The last thing you want when you are planning a lake day is to have a mechanical problem.”
For Peter Bruu, owner of German Brothers Marina, safe boating requires preparation and diligence. He encourages novice boaters to take time with just their first mate on the vessel to familiarize themselves with the boat, how it handles, where everything is located and how to dock.
“Make boating part of your lifestyle,” Bruu added. “You don’t always need to go out with a big group of friends. Go out
and read a book! Bring your laptop and work remotely!”
With your boat on the water, it’s time to relax and enjoy the day. Just be sure to pack some necessities. As of January 1, 2025, New York State requires that all boat operators have a boating license (unless you’re renting).
Safety is paramount out on the lakes. Equipment such as well-fitting life jackets – for inclement weather and emergencies – and flares can be stored on the boat. A good practice is to tell someone your “float plan,” said Bruu. The plan details where you intend to go and for how long; if something happens, this information can aid authorities.
“Know the body of water where you are boating,” Bruu added. “Understand where 5 mph/no wake zones are, where there is shallow water and the capabilities of your vessel.”
“You should prioritize essentials like water, healthy snacks, sunscreen, sunglasses, towels, flip flops,” Naeye stated. “But what you really need is good music, family, friends and some drinks to make a perfect day in the Finger Lakes.”
Florist has been in business since 1951.
What do you attribute to its longevity?
The ability to change and adapt is probably the biggest contributing factor to our longevity. Many small businesses, especially florists, find security in operating like they have in the past. We are always looking at current trends and the future of our industry to ensure that we are headed in the right direction.
Could you share the history of the business? When did you take ownership?
Rockcastle Florist was started in 1951 by Donald and Eleanor Rockcastle in Greece, NY with a small retail store and greenhouses. They met at Cornell University – Donald studied horticulture and Eleanor, home economics – and they forged a wholesale greenhouse and retail flower shop that served the surrounding communities. Due to a divorce of the partners in 1974, Eleanor moved forward with the retail flower shop, while Donald stayed in the growing industry and eventually moved to LeRoy, NY.
In 1979, Eleanor partnered with her son, Stephen (a talented grower) in the Canandaigua location, purchasing the former Ivan’s storefront and greenhouses on Gibson Street. For many years they produced beautiful plants, annuals, perennials and novelties such as poinsettias and calla lilies. However, the antiquated greenhouse equipment, heating etc. became too expensive to improve in our cold climate. In 2001 the property was sold and the retail flower shop moved to Route 332 in Canandaigua.
Meanwhile on the west side, Keith and I joined the business in 1991 and took ownership in 1995, allowing Eleanor to focus on her Canandaigua business. As the Greece location continued with steady growth, we implemented the first retail website in our area (our first order came from Australia) and continued to pursue floral technology and progressive design techniques.
In 2008 Keith and I took ownership of the Canandaigua
location in order for Eleanor to achieve full retirement status. Soon after, in 2011 Rockcastle Florist was moved to its current and forever home at 100 South Main Street in Canandaigua. This move took us to the heart of the business district and is an excellent retail location.
What can people expect when they come to your store?
Our customers can expect to see a selection of our bestselling plant and fresh flower designs available as well as a variety of seasonal gift items. Our knowledgeable sales team is always on hand to help with orders, questions or consult with families in need of sympathy designs.
Where do you source your flowers and plants from?
We source our flowers and plants both locally and from the global market – South America, Canada and the U.S. –depending on seasonal availability.
What types of flowers/arrangements do you sell and for what occasions?
We sell multiple designs for all occasions – birthdays, get well, sympathy, anniversaries, weddings and new babies.
What has been the most unique/memorable order you’ve received?
There are projects that stand out. Keith and his brother, Steve, were invited to help decorate the White House in 1995. It was an amazing-volunteer experience which captured the attention of the local press and community.
We have designed large architectural tributes for fallen law enforcement members. They are generally 5 feet high and represent their badge number in flowers. These require a team effort of engineering by Keith and many designer hands to complete.
Last, but not least, was a young man who came into the store at Valentine’s Day a few years ago to hand-pick a flower for every line of a love poem he had written.
How does Rockcastle Florist stand apart from other florists in terms of offerings and customer service?
We sublet a portion of our space in Greece to a local bakery. The owner provides baked goods to sell and deliver her cakes, cupcakes, etc to our customers. We have also partnered with a local winery which enables us to sell and deliver Finger Lakes wine and beer. Our customers are delighted to order flowers, a birthday cake and a bottle of wine to be delivered to their loved ones. We are the only florist in NYS with a liquor license and bakery items.
Soon we will be offering the addition of fresh, locally made doggie treats to our orders. We offer training and support to our sales team, and our website and stores are merchandised daily. We work with a supplier to custom design many of our own containers to curate our brand and designs.
What does it mean to you to operate a multi-generational business?
Our daughter, Mary Rockcastle, contributes to the business as our marketing director. One of my functions is creative director, and we work closely together on branding new products and images for the website, etc. Mary studied art and design in NYC and brings the knowledge of her generation and
creativity to our brand. Keith focuses on the financial, technology and delivery aspects of Rockcastle Florist. We also have a multi-generational staff as we welcome 20-somethings to our wellestablished team. As a business, it requires an understanding of each generation that contributes to Rockcastle Florist and how we will work together as a team.
What do you enjoy the most about owning and operating Rockcastle Florist?
Our biggest joy comes from the feedback we receive, whether we’re out and about or through reviews. We hear about how our product and services helped brighten someone’s day or elevated a special occasion like a wedding or funeral.
What is the key to operating a successful business?
Develop a team that supports the business with their talents, whether it’s how they communicate with customers, deliver with finesse or produce a floral design. Continue to educate yourselves and your team. Always be looking forward to trends in style, color and consumer needs. Only look to the past for lessons learned. Focus on branding your business in such a way that it stands out from your competition.
Thefuneral home, formerly known as Kenneth J. Perkins Funeral, was owned and operated by Ken and Robin Perkins for 50 years.
How are you continuing their legacy?
Perkins-Ames Funeral Home will continue to be family-owned and -operated, offering the personal touch that families are accustomed to. We are honored to maintain the Perkins’ legacy of providing dignity and compassion to grieving families with the utmost quality. We will remain invested and involved in the local community as Ken and Robin did in their 50 years of service.
David joined the funeral home in 2019 and purchased the business with his wife, Sarabeth, last year. How did you hear about the funeral home and what inspired you to take ownership of the business?
Ken Perkins was already well acquainted with our family and had reached out about a potential employment opportunity. We then met with Ken and Robin and devised a five-year plan to transfer ownership of the funeral home.
David has always had a passion to own his own funeral home and serve the community in their time of need. The Kenneth J. Perkins Funeral Home was the ideal location for our young family.
What education and experience did you bring to PerkinsAmes Funeral Home?
David started his career in funeral service in 2009 while in high school and graduated from Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science in 2015 with an associate’s degree in mortuary science and business management. He served his residency directly after college and obtained his NYS Funeral Directing License in 2016. Sarabeth graduated from Houghton College with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. She previously worked in finance and operations-related roles for eight years.
What services do you offer?
Perkins-Ames Funeral Home provides personalized services ranging from traditional funerals to direct cremations and anything in-between. We are also a full-service monument dealer and have the ability to engrave existing headstones. In addition, we have recently begun selling memorial and fingerprint jewelry.
How do you conduct business while accommodating patrons who are going through difficult times? How do you help your customers navigate the funeral arrangement process?
We respond to customers with empathy and patience, providing a listening ear when they need it most. Together we devise a personalized plan to guide families through their grief process, meeting with them where they feel most comfortable. Above all, we conduct ourselves with compassion and understanding while navigating funeral arrangements and are always available for any questions that may arise. We are equipped to help write obituaries, provide customized stationery and facilitate meaningful tributes to honor loved ones.
What is one thing you’d like people to know about operating a funeral home?
We are here 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to respond to the community’s needs. It’s not just an occupation, but a lifestyle.
What are you most proud of about operating PerkinsAmes Funeral Home?
We are proud to provide the Finger Lakes Region with a spacious and well-maintained facility to honor their loved ones. We also take pride in being a family-owned operation and a steadfast cornerstone of the community. Most of all we are proud of the trust that families place in us to care for their loved ones, and we greatly value the opportunity to
assist multiple generations in their time of need.
What do you enjoy most about living and working in Ontario County?
We truly feel at home here in Ontario County. We enjoy living and working in a small town where our community has become like family. We appreciate the beauty of the Finger Lakes Region, and our family enjoys time spent on the water.
What is the key to operating a successful business?
While we are relatively new to owning our own business, we have had some tremendous role models along the way. We have learned that the key to operating a successful business, especially a funeral home, is putting the community first. It’s also of vital importance to do all things with honesty and integrity, to remain humble and to maintain a personal touch with each family we serve.
Ontario County is lush with fruitful wines, rich spirits and delicious dishes. Local experts offer their recommendations for drink and food pairings based on the area.
Heron Hill’s Classic Dry Riesling & Grilled Shrimp or Seared Scallops
Visitors to Heron Hill Winery can find 34 wines, ranging from dry to sweet. All of Heron Hill’s wine is made in Hammondsport, and there is an additional tasting room in Canandaigua.
The most popular variety in the winery’s collection is its Classic Rieslings, including dry, semi dry and semi sweet. The Classic Dry Reisling has a bright, crisp taste and has vibrant acidity with citrus and green apple notes.
The Classic Dry Riesling pairs beautifully with grilled shrimp with citrus butter or seared scallops in a light lemon sauce. “Scallops have a naturally sweet, buttery texture, especially when seared,” explained Jessie Gorcica, director of sales and marketing at Heron Hill. “The bright acidity in our dry Riesling cleanses the palate, balancing that richness. Citrus in the wine mirrors the shrimp dish flavors; shrimp is often prepared with lemon, garlic or butter sauces, all of which match the zesty citrus and crisp profile of dry Riesling.”
Apollo’s Praise Cabernet Franc & New York Kitchen’s Sherry Tomato Blush Sauce Over Pasta
A wide selection of drinks awaits patrons of New York Kitchen in Canandaigua. The tasting room works with more than 100 companies to offer a rotating selection of 60 wines, 40 spirits, 10 draft beers and ciders, and 30 non-alcoholic beverages.
Among the tasting room’s popular products are the non-alcoholic Wölffer Estate Non-Alcoholic Petit Rose and straight bourbon whiskey from Hollerhorn Distilling. Chris Schmitt, tasting
room manager at New York Kitchen, is partial to the wines of Apollo’s Praise. “Owners Kelby Russell and Julia Hoyle make wines that are nothing short of excellent,” Schmitt said. “They craft classic Finger Lakes wines such as Riesling and Cabernet Franc, but also create beautiful wines that are not as common like Scheurebe; Kelby has the only planting of this grape on the East Coast.”
Schmitt recommends a Cabernet Franc from any of the wineries represented in New York Kitchen’s Tasting Room with the kitchen’s signature sherry tomato blush sauce. The sauce is one of the sauces available in the kitchen’s fresh pasta workshop.
“Cabernet Franc with a red pasta sauce is a classic pairing,” Schmitt stated. “The wine’s acidity will complement and balance the acidity of the tomatoes. The green pepper and red fruit notes of the wine will also complement the sweetness of the tomatoes, making a balanced pairing.”
Lakewood Vineyards in Watkins Glen offers 26 varieties that appeal to different palettes and occasions – from premium wines to food-friendly and fruity.
Its standout wine is the Bubbly Candeo, perfect for when champagne is too much and beer is not enough. The wine is lightly fruity, on the verge of dry.
“It’s a really versatile wine,” said Teresa Knapp of Lakewood Vineyards. She recommends pairing the Bubbly Candeo with soft cheeses, seared scallops, chicken picatta, parmesan popcorn or baba ganoush, which the winery has

featured at past events.
“The Bubbly Candeo is crisp and fruity and it cleanses your palette with these dishes.”
Arbor Hill Winery’s Noiret & Steak
Guests can wine and dine at Arbor Hill. The Naples winery is home to 24 varieties, a gift shop and its own restaurant, Brew & Brats, where patrons can enjoy appetizers, brats, chili, salad and more.
A notable standout in Arbor Hill’s collection is Noiret, a dry red. The distinctive, richly-colored red table wine has hints of green and black pepper, along with raspberry and mint aromas. Its fine tannin structure is complemented by aging in French Vevers oak.
“Noiret a fantastic steak wine,” said Angela MacAllister,
marketing manager at Arbor Hill. “The pepperiness of the Noiret complements the seasoning on the steak. It is very popular during out Friday Night Steak Night in our restaurant.”
Hazlitt Red Cat Cellars’ Bramble Berry & Chocolate
There is much to celebrate at Hazlitt Red Cat Cellars. The winery (which has a flagship location, Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards, in Hector as well as the cellars in Naples) is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. It also has plenty of drink options for your own celebration – 29 wines and three hard ciders, to be exact.
One of Hazlitt’s most popular wines is Bramble Berry, a Concord wine infused with natural flavors of black and red raspberry. Director of Marketing Stephanie Jarvis recommends pairing Bramble Berry with chocolate, as the winery serves the wine with dark chocolate Hershey’s Kisses.
“It also is an amazing addition to brownies!” Jarvis added. “We serve Bramble Berry brownie samples at the winery for the month of February. The brownies are super easy to make – just simply substitute Bramble Berry wine in place of the water in your favorite brownie recipe.”
Hollerhorn Distillery’s The Darkening & Butter Chicken or Sambal Barbecue Ribs
Tastebuds can be tickled at Hollerhorn Distilling in Naples. The distillery offers a variety of spirits including maple distillates, gin, vodka, whiskey and brandy. Its Spirit Room menu features nonalcoholic drinks, wine, beer and cider and
cocktails alongside seasonal food selections.
Hollerhorn’s newest, most popular spirit is The Darkening. It is the first-ever heavily peated American single malt whiskey peated with New York State peat, and aged in a McGregor Saperavi wine barrel.
The Darkening pairs well with butter chicken and sambal barbecue ribs from the Spirit Room.
“Both dishes bring out the sweetness and smoke of the spirit, and it only helps to enhance the depth of flavor in both dishes,” said Karl Neubauer, co-owner and head distiller of Hollerhorn.

Inspire Moore Vineyard’s Cayuga White, Petillant Naturel 2024 & Charcuterie
Inspire Moore Vineyard in Naples has you covered for any occasion with more than 20 different wines across its signature series and reserve wines. The vineyard also offers a petillant naturel, a traditional champagne and a brandy made from its own Concord grapes.
The newest addition to Inspire Moore’s lineup is its Cayuga White. It is a low alcohol, natural wine that is wild yeast fermented and bubbly. It features notes of white peach, grapefruit and apple, reminiscent of a fine champagne.
Co-Founder Diane Moore believes the Cayuga White pairs nicely with charcuterie along with fish or chicken. “It is dry, but with the soft fruit notes that complement cheeses and lighter meats,” she said.
Acquilano’s 2023 Blaufränkish & Grilled Steak
Carefully crafted wines await at Acquilano Wine Cellars in Canandaigua. The tasting room carries 65 wines from the Finger Lakes, 10 of which are made by the owner, Jim Acquilano.
Acquilano’s most popular wine is the 2023 Blaufränkish, which is an Austrian variety that grows well in the region.
“It has dark cherry and a little smoke and tobacco on the nose, with a hint of chocolate and smooth tannins with vanilla on the finish,” said Acquilano.
The tasting room serves charcuterie and allows patrons to bring food in from local restaurants as long as they purchasing wine there. Acquilano recommends the Blaufränkish with grilled steak.
The Baby Boomer population is still going strong, continuing to be active. Thirty percent of Ontario County residents are age 60 or older, making support for older adults imperative. As people are living longer, Lifespan is committed to helping older generations and their caretakers face and overcome challenges.
Lifespan was established 1971 by a group of nursing home administrators who believed advocacy and services benefit older adults, allowing them to remain independent for as long as possible. The regional nonprofit is based in Rochester, but its services extend across 10 Finger Lakes counties – including Ontario County. Lifespan is dedicated to combatting ageism, providing a collaborative and supportive environment and making a positive impact on all older adults.
Jennifer Helmbold, Future Care Planning & Financial Services relishes working with older adults and helping them discover the wide variety of services that Lifespan offers. “I
enjoy feeling as though I make a positive difference,” Helmbold said. “And I enjoy the lasting connection many of our clients have with Lifespan.”
Caregivers and older people alike can take advantage of more than 30 services at Lifespan. The organization annually serves 30,000 people.
Lifespan’s services include care management, respite for caregivers, family coaching and mediation, financial management, health insurance/Medicare information, transportation access and mobility management, among others.

by the Lifespan team
Incenturies past, older adults were perceived as esteemed and authoritative, gaining status as they aged. In the 20th century and now, views shifted as people viewed aging as a social problem rather than a natural process.
Ageism can lead to several significant, detrimental effects including poorer physical and mental health, social isolation and loneliness, financial insecurity, decreased quality of life and even premature death; people with positive attitudes toward aging live seven and a half years longer, on average, than those with negative attitudes.
Combatting ageism means acknowledging all people – no matter their age – want meaning and purpose, need engagement and fulfillments and desire friends and connection. It also requires a reframing of what aging is. Everyone is capable of living meaningful and purposeful later lives as they contribute to workplaces and the community as a whole. Older people are experienced, knowledgeable and a resource for others. Aging is a lifelong process.
In addition to Lifespan, there are a few initiatives and organizations that are dedicated to combatting ageism, including Changing the Narrative (changingthenarrativeco.org), Next Avenue (nextavenue.org) and Old School (oldschool.info).

The organization’s Home-Safe-Home program provides minor home modifications and safety assessments to help prevent falls.
All of Lifespan’s services are available in Monroe County, with a few extending into the Finger Lakes and Buffalo areas. In Ontario County, the nonprofit’s financial management assistance including billpaying and budgeting. Caregivers of those with dementia can receive a few hours of respite each week. Families can work with Lifespan to plan for the future of a loved one with a disability.
“We bring scam education and awareness to the county, in addition to services for victims of elder abuse which includes financial exploitation,” Helmbold said.
Primary services are available for those age 60 and older as well as caregivers of any age. Those interested in learning more about Lifespan’s services can call 585-244-8400, visit lifespanrochester.org or follow the organization on Facebook and Instagram. “We’re also happy to provide presentations about our services,” Helmbold stated.
In addition to its services, Lifespan manages two statewide coalitions. The New York State Caregiving & Respite Coalition focuses on improving the lives of family caregivers, working to secure quality and accessible respite services – planned and crisis. Meanwhile, the New York State Coalition of Elder Abuse is an outreach effort to protect older adults from abuse, neglect and exploitation.
“The coalition serves as a catalyst for change, raising awareness and offering solutions for prevention and intervention through education, advocacy and research,” Helmbold explained.
There are multiple opportunities for Ontario County residents to support Lifespan and the people it serves. Financial management volunteers visit older people in their homes to help with bill paying, budgeting and benefits management. Volunteers can also expand respite availability for caregivers of mild dementia patients, thus allowing them a few hours away to run errands, visit with friends or simply rest.
“New volunteers are always needed and welcome!” Helmbold exclaimed. “We provide training and ongoing support.”
Every year, Lifespan hosts its Celebration of Aging fundraiser. The event is annually held in March at the Riverside Convention Center in Rochester and focuses on tackling agism and dispelling myths on aging. In addition to award presentations, the Celebration of Aging hosts a nationally known speaker; this year, Lifespan welcomed John Quinones, host of the ABC show, “What Would You Do?”
Together, volunteers and the Lifespan team can benefit the lives of hundreds of older adults in Upstate New York. To learn more and to search for volunteering opportunities, visit lifespan-roch.org.
“Our team is dedicated to making a positive impact on all older adults, and it’s inspiring to be part of such a meaningful mission,” Helmbold said. “It’s a truly rewarding experience to work alongside passionate colleagues who all share a common goal.”

Bridging the gap between school and starting a career can be daunting and difficult. Thankfully, Wayne-Finger Lakes Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) provides multiple opportunities for students to connect with employers and for companies to expand their workforce
Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES partners with multiple schools and central school districts (CSDs) across Ontario County, including Canandaigua City School District, East Bloomfield CSD, Geneva City School District, Gorham-Middlesex (Marcus Whitman) CSD, Honeoye CSD, Manchester-Shortsville CSD (Red Jacket Schools), Naples CSD, Phelps-Clifton Springs CSD (Midlakes Schools) and Victor CSD.
“We work with a large number of business/ organizations in Ontario County and are very grateful for their partnerships,” said Amanda Airth, public information coordinator at Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES.
Among the organization’s many offerings – including five special education centers, a Career Creations Program and a Pathways Technology Early College High School (PTECH) – is its Career & Technical Education (CTE) program. The CTE program offers a chance for students to obtain a technical endorsement on their high school diploma as well as direct entry into a job. Approximately 1,300 high school juniors and seniors each year – 450 of which come from Ontario County – go through the program, according to Airth.
“When students are enrolled in CTE programing, they have the opportunity to work closely with their CTE school counselors as well as their home school district counselors and our business and community liaisons (BCL),” Airth explained. “The BCL role is much like
the role of a school to work coordinator and is critical in connecting students with job shadow, internship and co-op placements.”
Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES has two CTE centers: Wayne Technical and Career Center and Finger Lakes Technical and Career Center. Each has a set of career pathways and respective curriculum, employment opportunities and continuing education options. Pathways include agriculture, animal science, computers and communications, criminal justice, culinary arts, cosmetology, electrical trades and more.
The New Vision programs at Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES are one-year, application based for high school seniors interested in experiential learning opportunities and pursuing health careers. These programs specifically cover

health therapy sciences and medical careers.
“Students should talk with their home school district counselors for more information on enrollment,” Airth said.
Benefits of these programs and offerings are two-fold. Students can choose a program based on their interest and learn from industry professionals.
“Students are exposed to a variety of career opportunities, have the ability to learn soft skills that are essential for almost any job in today’s world and graduate high school with a plan for what comes next,” Airth added.
On the flip side, local businesses benefit as graduates possess job-ready skills.
“Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES is committed to building the future workforce in our region,” Airth said. “Many of our students are presented with one or more permanent job offers prior to graduation from our Career and Technical programs.”
Additional career services provided by Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES include mentoring and coaching for interviews, career fairs held through the school year and open houses with college and military representatives present.
Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES employs more than 1,000 staff members, serves 25 component school districts and has five special education centers. To learn more about WayneFinger Lakes BOCES’ full extent of services and programs, visit wflboces.org
Everyone deserves access to a robust offering of health services. Mosaic Health, a Rochester-based healthcare system, provides medical, dental and mental health care to the surrounding region, including Ontario County. It seeks to provide access to health care and education to people “regardless of financial, cultural or social barriers.”
“Our tagline is ‘Better happens together’ which for us means that engaging our patients in their care, improving their health literacy and our delivery of care to them, results in better health and wellness for our patients,” said CEO Mike Leary.
Mosaic was founded as Rochester Primary Care Network (RPCN), an offshoot of Rochester Health Network – an integrated Medicaid managed care insurance plan and Community Health Center network serving the Rochester community. For 23 years, RPCN distributed federal health center funds to its affiliated centers before becoming a Federally Qualified Health Center. It changed its name to Mosaic Health in 2019.
Local access to healthcare
Mosaic Health has several locations across Upstate New York:
• Mosaic Health Rushville provides medical, behavioral health and dental care.
• Marcus Whitman School Based Health Center in Rushville offers medical, behavioral health and dental care.
• Mosaic Health Utica provides medical and behavioral health care.
• Mosaic Health Utica Dental specializes in dental care.
• Mosaic Health Ilion offers medical and dental care.
• Mosaic Health Mobile Dental and Medical is a mobile unit in Elmira. It mainly provides dental care, but is capable of providing medical care as well.

(Continued from page 33)
• The Community Dentistry Program offers preventive dental care in approximately 150 schools across the Finger Lakes, Southern Tier and Mohawk Valley.
“Our fixed sites provide care in Ontario, Yates, Oneida and Herkimer counties,” Leary said. “Our portable dental programs extend that to Allegany, Chemung, Livingston, Madison, Schuyler and Steuben counties.”
Mosaic Health’s medical services are augmented by dental and mental health services. Its dentistry program mainly focuses on preventative services such as cleanings, x-rays and exams but also includes restorative (fillings, extractions) and rehabilitative (dentures) services.
“The importance of dental services in our rural communities cannot be overstated,” Leary said. “The need is great. The use of wells for drinking water, and the reduction of fluoridation among rural communities, is causing a notable increase in dental caries (cavities) among all ages, but of greatest concern, among children.”
Leary went on to explain how the Marcus Whitman School Based Health Center provided 31 dental visits last December. These visits resulted in identifying the need for 263 fillings, 193 sealants, plus completing eight fillings and one extraction.
Mental health rounds out Mosaic Health’s offerings. Those who establish themselves as medical patients at any of Mosaic Health’s locations can obtain behavioral health care management, psychotherapy and psychiatry services.
No matter the services patients require, Mosaic Health has a robust team of physicians, dentists and therapists. The healthcare system currently has one family physician, five nurse practitioners and one physician assistant with a second to start in June. There are also five dentists, though Mosaic Health is looking for three full-time dentists to meet demand. Its behavioral health staff includes seven psychotherapists and one psychiatric nurse practitioner.
Together, Mosaic Health served approximately 15,000 unique patients last year.
Mosaic Health’s reach goes beyond its services as it seeks to connect and educate the wider community. It raises awareness of its services by participating in health fairs, school open houses, parent-teacher conferences, community events and other activities across the Finger Lakes Region
“We don’t have a regular schedule of these activities, but rather support as many as we can as they present the opportunity,” Leary explained. “One that we’ve traditionally put a lot of energy into is Rushville’s Community Days, but the pandemic unfortunately curtailed this. We look forward to engaging with that community event this year.”
All people are welcome at Mosaic Health’s centers, regardless of their insurance status, ability to pay, spoken language or other challenges to accessible care. “We help patients with obtaining insurance coverage and offer an income-based sliding fee scale discount program,” Leary added.
Exciting things are on the horizon for Mosaic Health. It will welcome a new dentist in Rushville this summer and is entering a partnership that will benefit all patients.
Mosaic Health is also currently merging with Finger Lakes Community Health which should be effective by the end of the year. The partnership will mean more care for patients and increased opportunities to become more efficient and effective.
“Both organizations have gaps in our administrative staff that we expect to fill through this collaboration,” Leary said. “And we’ll be able to do more for our communities because we have complementary capabilities in terms of language services and cultural competencies. The merger will mean a new period of growth in both services provided and communities served.”
The Ontario County Chamber of Commerce (ONChamber)
celebrated 115 years of supporting local business at its annual dinner on March 6 at Finger Lakes Community College (FLCC).
As more than 200 guests arrived at the FLCC event space, they enjoyed a glass of champagne, sipped on signature cocktails – the 115 Spark and 115 Refresher – posed in a photo booth, bid on dozens of silent auction items and listened to the sounds of Dr. Dennis Repino on guitar.
“Just as technology, clothing and gas prices have all evolved in 115 years, so has the Chamber of Commerce,” said Tracey Dello Stritto, president and CEO of the Ontario County Chamber, in her opening remarks. “One thing that has stayed the same is our commitment to supporting the business community.”
Sponsored by Lyons National Bank, the event focused on the history of the Chamber – which, founded in 1910, is actually older than the City of Canandaigua, incorporated three years later in 1913 – and the strength in the organization’s future.
Kari Buch, 2024 past board chair, shared a year in review presentation, which included several highlights:
• The Chamber engaged in advocacy and hosted an intimate conversation with Senator Pam Helming and Assemblymembers Jeff Gallahan and Marjorie Byrnes at the State of the State legislative breakfast at New York Kitchen.
• Dello Stritto was appointed as a voting member of the Finger Lakes Regional Economic Development Council where she represents Ontario County’s business interests.
• The Chamber hosted 10 evening mixers and piloted two Morning Mixers to accommodate those who may not be able to extend their workday.
• The Chamber recognized 10 outstanding women during the ATHENA Awards, which were presented to Maggie Atkins and Abbey Friend-Vienna during a dinner at Club 86 in Geneva.
• The Chamber celebrated with its members and helped share their stories in more than 40 Member Milestone posts, 17 ribbon cuttings and countless in-person visits.
Dello Stritto thanked Buch, outgoing board members and current board members “who work diligently behind the scenes to steer the Chamber’s strategic course, assessing its focus and vision for the greater good of our members and community.” She then introduced Krista Gleason, owner of Gleason Writes and current board chair.
Gleason shared a powerful message: “We’re all familiar with the phrase ‘It takes a village.’ Tonight, I’d ask you to consider that ‘It takes a Chamber.’” She stressed that it takes a Chamber to promote and support local business and nonprofits, advocate for our businesses and communities, advance economic growth and cultivate workforce development.
Gleason outlined some of the Chamber’s initiatives for the year ahead, including the inaugural State of the County event, the upcoming graduation of the third class of Leadership Ontario (learn more about this exciting leadership development program on page 48) and the launch of the Ontario County Chamber Foundation, a 501(c)(3) established to sustain the Chamber’s impact for generations to come. The foundation, led by chair Jeff Friend and a dedicated board, will allow the Chamber to accept tax-deductible donations and apply for grants to support its programs and operations.
The evening’s spotlight was on the presentation of the prestigious Business of the Year, Nonprofit of the Year and Lifetime Achievement awards, sponsored by Canandaigua National Bank & Trust, Constellation Brands, F.G. Rayburn Mason Contractors and UR Medicine Thompson Health. Michelle Pedzich, of Canandaigua National Bank, presented the Business of the Year Award. She shared the inspiring story of LaBarge Media, a company that began in 1984 with just one employee and has since grown into a dynamic team of seven specializing in video production, graphic design, web design and project management. Despite their work with big-name brands like Adobe, Xerox and Canon, LaBarge Media has maintained its commitment to supporting local businesses.

“This award honors a Chamber member that demonstrates an exceptional commitment to the economic vitality and success of their community,” said Pedzich. “And LaBarge Media is a shining example of this dedication.”
Jason LaBarge, director of operations and partner at LaBarge Media, accepted the award, reflecting on how much this recognition would have meant to his parents. LaBarge also expressed deep appreciation for his dedicated team, many of whom boarded a plane in the early hours of the morning just to be there in support. He credited them for their unwavering commitment and hard work, stating that any success he has achieved is because of the strong team beside him. His heartfelt words underscored the power of collaboration and gratitude in building a thriving business and community.
Michael F. Stapleton Jr., president and CEO of UR Medicine Thompson Health, presented the Nonprofit of the Year Award to Neighbor to Neighbor.
“The Nonprofit of the Year Award recognizes a Chamber member that has demonstrated exceptional commitment to supporting local communities and residents,” Stapleton said, adding, “Neighbor to Neighbor truly embodies this mission.”
The organization provides one-time emergency financial assistance to individuals and families in Ontario County through partnerships with local health and social service agencies. Established in the 1970s by George M. Ewing, dissolved in 2006 and revived in 2020 in response to the financial challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Neighbor to Neighbor has raised more than $650,000 and assisted more than 750 families in just a few short years.
In accepting the award, Meg Reed reiterated the organization’s simple yet profound mission: “Our community is at its best when the least among us is lifted by the rest.”
Reed was deeply humbled to accept an award that has previously been presented to organizations such as UR Medicine Thompson Health. She expressed gratitude for the recognition and emphasized the power of collective community effort in making a difference.
Another special moment of the evening was the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award, an honor recognizing individuals who have made lasting contributions to Ontario County through volunteerism, mentorship and community leadership. Since its inception in 1960, the award has been bestowed upon 65 individuals who have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to service.
Dan Fuller, 2024’s Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, introduced this year’s honoree: Tim Chaapel, founder and former owner of Mobile Music.
Chaapel’s journey began with a 1972 Astro Van and a vision – one that would grow into Mobile Music, a cornerstone of Ontario County’s musical community. From his early days repairing instruments in school parking lots to building a business that serves more than 50 area schools, Chaapel’s story is one of perseverance, passion and generosity.
Chaapel has a deep-rooted commitment to ensuring all students, regardless of financial means, have access to music education. And, his contributions to the community extend beyond Mobile Music — his years of running sound for Canandaigua’s Fourth of July parade, his work with local performing arts venues and his role in equipping Motion Junction with accessible musical instruments. Even in retirement, Chaapel’s dedication to music and community remains steadfast as he continues his work in instrument repair and mentoring the next generation of musicians.
In accepting the award, Chaapel expressed deep appreciation for the recognition, especially knowing the incredible individuals who have received this honor before him. With characteristic humility, he credited his family, musicians and community members who have supported his journey – a testament that his work has always been driven by a passion for sharing the joy of music rather than a desire for accolades.
As the evening came to a close, the Chamber’s annual dinner was a reminder of the incredible achievements made possible through collaboration, innovation and the shared commitment to making Ontario County a great place to live and work.

Generations have participated in the 4-H Camp Bristol Hills, taking part in a unique and fun outdoor experience where they build skills and receive guidance from positive role models. This year, the camp celebrates 100 years of making memories.
“We like to think of Camp as a very traditional program, with many of the same activities that our grandparents and great-grandparents enjoyed,” observed Camp Manager Jim Hooper. “But the reality is that Camp has evolved a lot over the first century of the program.”
Hooper and the camp staff sees 4-H Camp Bristol Hills as a way to “unplug…and build authentic relationships.” The camp’s activities focus on honing mental and physical skills, all the while connecting campers with peers and role models.
“It’s truly an honor to be playing a role in this amazing program and recognizing the impact of those who have come before us, and
Hooper said. “We have assembled a great team of current staff as well as active alumni staff that are just as passionate as I am about the work we do.”
The camp began with a single week of overnight camp for boys and girls separately. It eventually became co-ed and was the first co-ed 4-H Camp in the state. In its infancy, the camp’s activities centered around nature, swimming, boating, first aid, handicrafts and mechanical skills.
Attendance was limited to 4-H Club members (which is no longer the case). In 1931, 4-H Camp Bristol Hills became a regional program, expanding its reach to 4-H members outside of Ontario County. The camp’s goals were:
• To give 4-H Club boys and girls a healthful, happy vacation through the freedom and inspiration attained by living out of doors.
• To develop self-reliance, perseverance, cooperation, selfdiscipline and an appreciation of nature.
• To create an interest among parents and local people in promoting 4-H Club activities.
• To hold the interest of young people and to develop leadership that will carry on local clubs during the winter.
• To furnish an opportunity to 4-H instruction, health practices, supervised recreation and hand-craft.
• To create a feeling of good fellowship and friendliness among the boys and girls and their leaders.
Today, 4-H Camp Bristol Hills offers a range of camps that vary in length. Its six-day, five-night overnight camps are Resident, Leader-in-Training, Adventure, Animation
(Continued from page 41)
and Wilderness First Aid camps. The Counselor-in-Training overnight camp runs two weeks. Additionally, there are three day camp programs: Day, Progression and Night.
“We typically hire around 50 young adults to staff the camp, and most of them work the entire summer,” said Hooper.
Tues-Sat 11-4 • Lunch 11-2pm 25 Main St., Brockport, NY 14420 theredbirdcafeandgiftshop.com 585-637-3340
Campers can engage in several activities during their stay. They can swim – and take swim lessons – go on regular hikes, practice archery and riflery, participate in sports and learn outdoor survival skills. Educational activities include crafts, bead and bracelet making, rocketry and geocaching.
“Our core goals focus on what we refer to as the BIGM, which stands for belonging, independence, generosity and mastery,” Hooper stated. “Our camp strives to build a positive community with strong cultures and traditions that appeal to campers of all ages.”
In honor of its centennial, 4-H Camp Bristol Hills held a kickoff event in January at Rebel Sailor Brewing Company in Shortsville. The party brought together campers and staff who had stayed and played at the camp as far back as the 1960s to reconnect and reminisce.
Main St. Bloomfield, NY 14469 bloomersfloral.com 585-657-8063
The fun continues with a series of activities including a Family Camp weekend May 17 to 18, a 5K Offroad Race on September 13, a Fall Festival on September 27, and the Centennial Gala on October 4. Hooper and the camp team are putting together a series of
of early days of the camps to be displayed on location.
“We are also working with Senator Helming on a Congressional Proclamation honoring the centennial, and Preston Pierce on a roadside historical marker at camp, recognizing the milestone,” Hooper said.
The camp continues to evolve, making improvements and enhancements to welcome future generations of campers. A major facility improvement project took place in 2017, replacing two old bathrooms with three brand new bath houses, new water and septic lines and upgraded electrical services. There are plans to replace the aging pool house with a new building in the next three years, add a 5to 7-acre pond on the western edge of the camp and preserve the iconic red barn that was built around the 1940s.
In terms of programs, 4-H Camp Bristol Hills is growing its workforce development programs with the support of the Ontario County Youth Bureau. Additionally, it is adding two one-week specialty programs in its Wilderness First Aid certification and Night Camp programs.
Hooper enjoys how the camp creates new community every week as campers learn, grow and connect. “To watch the amazing young adults that we hire, working with campers to build skills, grow confidence, foster independence and truly learn and grow without the distractions of the modern society is truly something special that I will never take for granted.”

Whenstrolling through local downtown areas, you might notice the colorful flower planters, be swept up in a fun festival or stroll through a unique array of businesses. There is much that goes into creating a vibrant downtown that appeals to both locals and visitors from afar, and much of the credit goes to local business improvement districts (BIDs).
The Geneva BID, which encompasses more than 175 businesses, strives to “create a vibrant storefront-filled epicenter of networking, marketing, promotion, events and beautification,” according to Executive Director Catherine Price.
The Geneva BID was incorporated in 1985 by a group of downtown Geneva merchants and community members. They sought to make small capital improvements, ensuring the downtown area was clean, had good parking and good lighting.
“This group of merchants, business owners and property owners stayed very active for many years,” said Price. “In fact, Charles ‘Charlie’ Bauder, one of our founding members, is still an active member of our board and finance committee.”
The Geneva BID has steadily evolved with the landscape and times. Price explained that over the past four years, the BID has embraced tourism as Downtown Geneva’s “number one industry,” and the organization has accordingly adjusted its goals and strategies. The Geneva BID updated its website with a community calendar, strengthened its social media presence and made an active advertising and marketing program. The organization went from hosting just four events a year to 37 in 2024 and is continuing to add more events and update marketing this year.
“Geneva is a beautiful and historic city in which to live, work, play, and invest,” Price stated. “We strive to create opportunities and provide services that help our downtown merchants thrive.”
The summer calendar is packed with free, public activities, including First Fridays featuring live music, Geneva Grows Native Lakefront Walking Tour, Garlic Week, art walks and car shows. A new event this year is the three-part Music Mondays at Bicentennial Park. Fall and winter activities include Jingle in Geneva and the Winter Arts Festival. An up-to-date calendar can be found at genevadowntown.com/eventcalendar.

“Our events are designed to bring people to Geneva for day trips as well as provide fun experiences for both residents and visitors,” Price said. “Whether you are planning a day trip, weekend getaway, or just stopping by, we invite you to explore all Geneva has to offer. The GBID stands committed to make Geneva stand out and be the true destination of the Finger Lakes Region.”
Managed by the Downtown Canandaigua Business Management Association, the Canandaigua BID seeks to create “a great place for guests to visit and residents to explore,” according to BID Executive Director Denise Chaapel.
“Thirty-five years ago, downtown Canandaigua was at a 65 percent vacancy, and property owners and business owners were seriously struggling,” Chaapel said. City leaders talked to local property owners and established an eight-block footprint, stretching from City Hall to Frequentem Brewing and a block east and west. “We’re at less than 2 percent vacancy now,” Chaapel reported.
With storefronts filled, the BID is working on façade improvements and developing the upper floors. Once-vacant
floors are now possible sites for residential units, art studios and office spaces. While office spaces are allowed on the first floor of side street buildings, the Canandaigua BID reserves the first floor of Main Street buildings for stores and restaurants to “create a strong retail and restaurant vibrancy.”
Chaapel explained how a couple from Long Island fell in love with Canandaigua while staying at a downtown Airbnb. They recently purchased a building on Main Street with plans to open a pottery business on the first floor and live on the upper floors. “That kind of economic development and tourism partnership has helped the BID create this vibrant city center,” Chaapel stated.
One major improvement was the establishment of Central on Main, a former parking lot turned into an outdoor dining area during the pandemic. It has become a permanent venue with a stage built by the Rotary Club, a mural of Canandaigua Lake painted on the ground and seating available for up to 200 people. This year, a county grant will provide shade structures. “This little idea that came out of something really horrible created something wonderful for our community and tourists to enjoy,” Chaapel said.
The Canandaigua BID offers several services from beautification, safety and capital improvement to marketing and recruitment. It also hosts more than 30 events a year. Popular events include the Fire & Ice Festival in February, the Art & Music Festival in July, and Fall Into Canandaigua in late October. More information and updates can be found at downtowncanandaigua.com. Funding comes from a variety of sources. Projects such as installing shade structures at Central on Main come from grants. The BID itself is funded by property assessments, fundraisers and sponsorships.
The Canandaigua BID continues to discern what residents and visitors alike enjoy most and work how they can shop and support local businesses. “It takes the small businesses to support the community and the community to support those small businesses,” Chaapel said. “That’s what we’re building here – it’s all about community.”

“Through my experience with Leadership Ontario, I have become a better leader and community member and am fully committed to making a difference in Ontario County.”
That’s what Jacob Maslyn, the ag economic development educator at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ontario County, said about participating in the Leadership Ontario program. Maslyn is one of 32 graduates of this unique leadership development program whose mission is to develop inspired, confident and community-focused leaders who want to contribute to Ontario County’s success.
In June 2025, 22 more individuals will graduate from the program, representing its third and largest cohort to date.
Ontario County is the founding sponsor of Leadership Ontario, which is administered by the Ontario County Chamber of Commerce and the Partnership for Ontario County.
Participants attend 12 program days over the course of 10 months. They benefit from professional and personal leadership development workshops led by a certified leadership development coach. They also learn about key focus areas of Ontario County such as economic development, education, healthcare, local government, tourism and community services. It is the latter piece that truly differentiates the program. The cohort travels to diverse locations across Ontario County for behindthe-scenes tours, exclusive experiences and insights from key stakeholders, including CEOs and C-suite executives, county government leaders, nonprofit directors, school superintendents and college presidents. These personal connections to respected community leaders are invaluable to participants as they shape their perspectives and goals.
Some of the Ontario County sites that have been featured are Ganondagan, Ontario County 911 Center, Hemdale Farms, New York Kitchen, Ontario County Historical Society, Boys & Girls Club of Geneva, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Finger Lakes Community College and Cornell AgriTech.

Creating connections and opportunities
Leadership Ontario is open to professionals in all stages of their careers who live or work in Ontario County.
Several graduates credit the program with introducing them to people and opportunities that have influenced their next career steps and community involvement.
“I joined Leadership Ontario to gain a deeper understanding of the community I grew up in and to learn about the different organizations I was unfamiliar with,” Maslyn, Class of 2022, further shared. “After my year in Leadership Ontario, I have been able to get involved in multiple county boards, taken on leadership positions and transitioned to a career that allows me to work more closely with community partners on a daily basis.”
Ulana Fuller, Class of 2023, said the program led her to her current position as executive director of the Ontario County Historical Society. “Leadership Ontario provided an in-depth look at Ontario County and connected me with professionals in diverse industries including education, tourism, business, agriculture, public health and government,” she stated. “This has been beneficial for collaborations, development within my own organization and a deeper understanding of our county-wide community.”
Fellow 2023 graduate, Peter Budmen, Associate Director of Community Engagement and Service Learning at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, said, “Leadership Ontario provided me with a deeper understanding of the many resources Ontario County offers its residents, reflection and insight on the leader I am and introduced me to a network of professionals that I have since called on for a variety of opportunities. This cohort-based professional development is a must-do for professionals – new and established – within the region.”
