Livingston County of

On February 23, 1821, Livingston County, NY was formed from Ontario and Genesee counties. The 12 original towns were: Avon, Caledonia, Conesus, Geneseo (county seat), Groveland, Leicester, Lima, Livonia, Mount Morris, Sparta, Springwater and York.

Part of North Dansville was annexed from Steuben County in 1822 and became a separate town when Sparta was divided in 1846. At the same time, the town of West Sparta was also formed from Sparta. The towns of Nunda and Portage were annexed in 1846 and the town of Ossian was annexed in 1857 from Allegany County.

Whyis it important to buy local first?

When you shop local, you do far more than get the items that you want quickly and conveniently. Buying local actually stimulates the economy in our community, helps benefit local schools and charities, and even helps the environment.

Take a look at some of the many reasons why it’s important to shop and buy locally.

Buying local keeps money in our community

When you buy locally, the small business you’re making your purchase from certainly benefits, but the benefits keep growing. A small business that does well is likely to hire more people, who then spend more money in the community.

Buying locally also pours money into the local institutions who need it. Taxes are paid locally, boosting the community’s libraries, schools and infrastructure. Local businesses are also more likely to donate to charities in the local community, helping make improvements that all can enjoy.

The New Economics Foundation compared similar purchases made at chain stores versus those made with local businesses, the experts determined that buying locally puts double the money into the community than occurs when you make a purchase at a chain store.

Buying local is better for the environment

Whether you buy online or from a major

chain store, it typically requires some major effort to get your item to you. Trucks have to haul products across the country, burning up fossil fuel and contributing to pollution.

In addition, products that have to be packaged for shipping typically end up requiring extra packaging to survive the journey intact. Compare buying, say, a prepackaged set of nails at a big box store – with your purchase sealed in one of those packages that practically require power tools to open – to picking out just the nails you need at your local hardware store, with the friendly local owner popping them into a simple paper bag (or even into the bag you brought yourself). All that extra packaging typically ends up in landfills or the ocean, adding to environmental damage.

Buying local results in more diverse choices for customers

When you go to one big box store after another, you’ll see the same product choices, over and over. The only real difference is in price, and often that difference is a matter of pennies.

Buying locally is a whole different experience. Each small business in our community is unique, offering a true connection with customers and a real understanding of their visitors’ needs. Think about the diversity of stepping into a local boutique to do some clothes shopping versus perusing the offerings at chain stores, which all seem to look the same. Local artisans and craftspeople can show off their wares and build

a following when you shop locally.

In addition, local businesses are typically far more flexible, adjusting to meet the immediate needs of customers much more quickly than giant national chains can do. They can also do a better job of stocking the products our community members want since they’re part of the community.

Buy local to help keep our community unique

Related to diverse choices is the idea that those unique products lead to a one-of-a-kind shopping experience. No one goes to a big box store to browse or to enjoy recreational shopping. But when your local shopping district is filled with local retailers, you create a sense of self-image that help defines our community. Our unique businesses are something to be proud of, and when we all support them, they create a reason for other shoppers to come visit our community. By supporting local businesses, we can also help entrepreneurship thrive, which adds to local prosperity and innovation. Every

local retailer is one of our neighbors who has taken a risk to try to make our region a better, stronger place, boosting the economy and helping lift friends and neighbors into the middle class.

When we all look for ways to buy local, we tell all our neighbors that we believe our community is worth investing in. We put our money into things we care about, including our local schools, and we enjoy a better purchasing experience overall personally. Shopping and buying locally is a win-win for you, small businesses and our community as a whole.

Five Questions

ChadTeeters, MD is the President/CEO of UR Medicine – Noyes Health. The hospital traces its history to Dr. George Ahlers of Pittsburgh, who in 1890 organized the first hospital in Dansville with assistance from Dr. Roswell Park of Buffalo, NY. Dansville Medical and Surgical Hospital was located in what is now known as Kings Daughters and Sons building. In 1911 the hospital closed, and was reopened in 1913 as a proprietary hospital in the Colonial Inn, by Miss Elizbeth Swartz. In 1920 the Colonial Inn was incorporated as Dansville General Hospital. In the 1970s, funds were raised to replace the outdated and overcrowded hospital. The Nicholas H. Noyes Memorial Hospital was created on Clara Barton Street and has continued to grow to meet the advances in modern medicine.

UR Medicine – Noyes Health is the only hospital in Livingston County with the main campus in Dansville but servicing the entire Southern Tier community.

What do you see as an important industry trend that will impact business in the next year?

With an increase of services moving from the inpatient to the ambulatory delivery sector, we expect to see a continued trend of our care delivery moving into the outpatient arena with less reliance on inpatient care.

What’s your favorite business-related book or podcast, and why?

“The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership” by John C. Maxwell. Although more than a quarter century old, this book is succinct, applies to any industry and outlines both the key tenets of great leadership and how to develop them and why they are important. I’ve read it multiple times and find new value each time.

How does your business contribute to the local community?

As the largest non-governmental employer in Livingston County, we are not only a large employment source but also generate an estimated $151 million of economic activity for the region (based upon 2023 New York state hospital cost reports and the NYS Bureau of Economic Analysis).

If you could have dinner with any person, living or not, who would it be and why?

My grandfather. He wasn’t especially accomplished and didn’t go to college, but he was always my hero growing up. Before I knew what being a cardiologist fully meant, I chose to pursue a career in cardiology out of a desire to help him. He unfortunately didn’t live long enough to see me achieve that goal and others than I couldn’t even have fathomed at that point when he passed. But to be able to talk to him now and tell him all that’s happened and learn more from him now as an adult would be fantastic.

If you could go back and give your younger self one piece of career advice, what would it be?

Just enjoy the process! There is no way I could have or would have planned for my career to progress as it has. Sometimes the paths that I followed to get where I am now were completely inconsistent with what I thought I would be doing. But following my instinct about where the best next challenge would be, and approaching my career ladder as a learning opportunity to gain new skills that seemed widely applicable to the direction healthcare was heading has served me well. I think to go back and try to offer some sage advice would have caused me to rethink my path and steered me in a way that likely wouldn’t have gotten me to where I am and may not have been as fulfilling.

Martin Miskell is the CEO of Arc GLOW, a nonprofit founded in 1961 by parents and friends of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The organization supports individuals with a wide variety of disabilities and neurological conditions across Genesee, Livingston, Orleans and Wyoming counties.

Arc GLOW is dedicated to helping people we support meet their full potential and find fulfillment in learning, personal relationships, employment, volunteerism, recreation, the arts and more. The nonprofit seeks to eliminate barriers and help individuals engage in the world.

What has been the most beneficial business strategy you’ve employed recently and its outcome?

In 2021, The Arcs of Livingston-Wyoming and Genesee Orleans merged together to create Arc GLOW, becoming the largest geographical Arc chapter in New York at the time, covering roughly 2,400 square miles.

In October 2022, we sold our trash and recycling business in Batavia to Casella Waste, developing a strong relationship with them. A few months later, we bought the old Leicester school, and now it serves as the base for our New Horizons and WOW day habilitation programs.

How does your business contribute to the local community?

Arc GLOW provides vital services for up to 2,000 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in the GLOW region, many supported in Livingston County. We hire local residents, and we are one of the largest employers with more than 1,100 team members who work full-time, part-time and per diem. Additionally, the staff we employ, the people we support and their families all shop locally, helping to support businesses throughout the area, making a big economic impact. We live, work and play in the GLOW region.

What’s one thing you wish people knew about your industry/process?

The most important thing people need to know about Arc GLOW is the people we support want the same as you or me – a home to live in, a meaningful job or volunteer opportunities and fun things to do. They may have a disability, but they are people first.

Arc GLOW, as one of the largest 501(c)3 nonprofits in the GLOW region is a chapter of The Arc New York, the largest nonprofit in the entire state and the single largest organization of its kind in the nation. Our board is required to have a majority of members who are blood relatives to, or are individuals we support. For every $1 we spend, only $.075 go to administrative/overhead costs. We are good stewards of taxpayer’s dollars.

If you could have dinner with any person, living or not, who would it be and why?

I’d like to sit down with my father, who passed away when I was 25. I’d like him to know about my wife, four children, and

granddaughter. He would be so proud of our success, our accomplishments. He was a great dad.

What’s one tool or resource you couldn’t live without in your business?

I’m very lucky to have a great team and supportive board of directors. Our most important resource is our dedicated staff. People come to work at Arc GLOW, and decide this is their career. We have so many current staff who have been here 25, 30, 40 years. We are more than just a job for them; they believe in our mission, and truly love working with the individuals we support.
