Dear Friends,

This evening we celebrate the spirit of collaboration, cooperation, and true friendship that have characterized the best of the French-American relationship since its beginning, some 245 years ago.

The French-American Foundation relies on the contributions of many dedicated individuals, companies, and foundations. We would like especially to extend our gratitude to our honorees, Dina Powell McCormick, YL ’05, and Yves-André Istel for their extraordinary support of the evening and our mission; to our guest speakers Tory Burch and Raymond McGuire; to the members of the Gala and Corporate Committees, and to the many donors who make our work possible. More than anything, this evening is a celebration of all of you.

Tonight we also remember two men who did so much to make the Foundation what it is today: our co-founder James Lowenstein and our longtime Board member Michel David-Weill. Both men, in their respective fields of diplomacy and business, worked tirelessly to foster the French-American relationship and to create lasting links between our two countries. We also thank Gaëtan Bruel and Constance Jewett Ellis for delivering their reflections on these two leaders.

We would like to extend a warm welcome to our colleagues at the French-American Foundation – France, and especially to Alain Papiasse, Chairman of Corporate and Institutional Banking at BNP Paribas and Chairman of the Foundation, and Amina Sabeur, Managing Director. Our structure – sister organizations in New York and Paris that share a common name and mission but operate independently – makes it uniquely positioned to collaborate closely and address the interests of constituents on both sides of the Atlantic.

We are most grateful for your own commitment and for the opportunity to welcome you here tonight. Your presence is an affirmation of the continued vitality of the French-American relationship and of the values which both countries hold dear. We hope you will have a most enjoyable evening.

French-American French-American Foundation –

2023 Programs

TRANSATLANTIC FORUM

Founded in 2018, the Transatlantic Forum is an invitation-only membership group that brings together French and American executives and innovators for in-depth conversations on contemporary issues of concern on both sides of the Atlantic.

The program aims to provide a deeper understanding of the forces shaping both American and French societies in a warm, convivial atmosphere that fosters lasting relationships. The goal is to create a community that is informed, open-minded and committed to engaging personally on issues of critical importance to the US – France relationship.

Members cross nationalities and professional fields such as government, media, non-profit, academia, business, law, finance, the arts, and more. Forum members share a passion for debate and a desire to engage across cultures to help build a more peaceful and unified world.

TRANSLATION PRIZE

For over 35 years, the Translation Prize has served to promote French literature in the United States and to provide translators and their craft with greater visibility and recognition. The Prize also spotlights the publishers who bring these important French works of literature to the American market.

This year we are pleased to honor three translators for extraordinary achievements in their field: Juliet Sutcliffe for her translation of The Music Game by Stéfanie Clermont (Biblioasis), and Kieran Aarons and Cédrine Michel, for their co-translation of Self Defense: A Philosophy of Violence by Elsa Dorlin (Verso Books).

This program is generously funded by the Florence Gould Foundation.

YOUNG LEADERS

The French-American Foundation’s flagship Young Leaders program was founded in 1981 and planned in collaboration with our sister organization in France. The program brings together an exceptional group of young professionals, aged 30 to 40, from a wide array of sectors, whose common link is their passion for forging bonds in a globalized world and using their influence for the common good.

In this two-year program, alternating between France and the United States, a group of 40 Young Leaders spends five days together discussing issues of common concern, meeting with local and global specialists, and getting to know one another. In today’s globalized world, where the need for international cooperation and cross-cultural knowledge has never been greater, the program provides an essential environment in which to create productive, lasting links among influential people in both countries.

Alumni of the program include prominent figures from both sides of the Atlantic, including President Bill Clinton, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, President Emmanuel Macron, Pulitzer Prize-winner writer and journalist Isabel Wilkerson, entrepreneur Tom Lee, US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti, journalist Christine Ockrent and ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet.

This year’s program will take place in Strasbourg, France from October 17th – 22nd.
