DEAR FR I ENDS,

This evening, we are gathered here at the Rainbow Room for our first Gala in three years. The Gala is one of the rare events that unites all our supporters, our Board of Directors, Young Leaders, Transatlantic Forum members, and friends new and old alike. We are so pleased to be back together again, in person, and to be celebrating the Foundation and its work. The Rainbow Room opened in 1934 at the height of the Great Depression. Reflecting optimism in the face of hardship, we think that this year it’s a particularly fitting venue as the city and the Foundation alike emerge from the challenges of the pandemic. While we know that many of our steadfast supporters were not able to make it to New York tonight, please know that you are very much part of this important night and everything it represents, for all of us. The Foundation relies on the contributions of many dedicated individuals, companies, and foundations. We would like especially to extend our gratitude to our honorees, Kenneth Jacobs of Lazard and Carol Bellamy, YL ’81; to Lazard for its extraordinary support of tonight’s event; to our guest speakers Chloe Demrovsky YL ’19 and Adam Hodge YL ’19 for sharing their reflections; to the members of the Gala and Corporate Committees, and to the many donors who make our programs possible. A special thanks as well to the Florence Gould Foundation for their continued generosity. We are most grateful for your own commitment and for the opportunity to welcome you here tonight. Your presence is an affirmation of the strength, the vitality and the shared sense of purpose of the French-American Foundation community, and of the importance of Franco-American friendship. Thank you all for joining us. We hope you will have a most enjoyable evening.

TRANSLATION PRIZE For 35 years, the Translation Prize has served to promote French literature in the United States and to provide translators and their craft with greater visibility and recognition. The Prize also spotlights the publishers who bring these important French works of literature to the American market. This year we are pleased to honor three translators for extraordinary achievements in their field: Lara Vergnaud for her translation of Life Sciences by Joy Sorman (Restless Books); Susan Emanuel for her translations of La Belle Epoque by Dominique Kalifa (Columbia University Press) and Rescue, Relief and Resistance: The Jewish Labor Committee’s Anti-Nazi Operations 1934-1945 by Catherine Collomp (Wayne State University Press); and Sophie R. Lewis for her translation of In the Eye of the Wild by Nastassja Martin (New York Review Books). This program is generously funded by the Florence Gould Foundation. YOUNG LEADERS The French-American Foundation’s flagship Young Leaders program was founded in 1981 and planned in collaboration with our sister organization in France. The program brings together an exceptional group of young professionals, aged 30 to 40, from a wide array of sectors, whose common link is their passion for forging bonds in a globalized world and using their influence for the common good. In this two-year program, alternating between France and the United States, a group of 40 Young Leaders spends five days together discussing issues of common concern, meeting with local and global specialists, and getting to know one another. In today’s globalized world, where the need for international cooperation and cross-cultural knowledge has never been greater, the program provides an essential environment in which to create productive, lasting links among influential people in both countries. Alumni of the program include prominent figures from both sides of the Atlantic, including President Bill Clinton, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, President Emmanuel Macron, Pulitzer Prize-winner writer and journalist Isabel Wilkerson, entrepreneur Tom Lee, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, journalist Christine Ockrent and ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet. This year’s program will take place in Austin, Texas from October 26th – 29th and will focus on Entrepreneurship and the Innovation Economy.
