This project focused on intangible elements available on a speific site (Dungeness, UK), thus study how it contributes to the architectural behaviour of the space (community, space, planning etc) as well as translating them into an architecture that caters to the intangible elemtents researched.

Upon reaching Dungeness, the first thing noticed was how barren the landscape is, yet how rich it was with history. From the formation during the Roman Empire to a small fishing village and an industrial port, Dungeness had very much potential, and still is.

Dungeness, in other words; although barren, has a lot of memories. These memories need to be preserved for the future generations, as there will be no answer as to when will it stop evolving.

However, when looking into available archive spaces in the world, there were a few issues that needs to be addressed. First, the traditional archive space is a very dry space with lack of interaction and involvement from the public. The public is very much limited to the lobby space and the rest goes to the archivists. This may be sufficient to archive other materials, but memories being an intangible matter, constantly evolves and need to be recalled in order to keep it alive.

JOURNEY OF A MEMORY SCALE 1:10 000 4

To explore the behavior of memories, an experiment of a memory game is carried out in the site of Dungeness. The aim is to compare the movement of a physical journey and the journey of a memory. Without any recording devices, one goes around the site of Dungeness for a day and record what they remembered once carried out. The sequence of the memory sketches are then related with other senses (touch, smell, taste and hearing) is plot out onto the map. The map then is compared to the physical journey of the subject. It is found that memory moves and evolves way differently from physical movement and growth – it is best compared the growth of a memory to a Surrealist painting and it moves very abstractly with no certain direction.

Thus, looking into the process of memory formation in comparison with the traditional archive method, a new archive model was devised to fit in intangible materials, i.e. memory in an archive space.

Dungeness Nuclear Power Station B will be closed in 2028, after an appeal of a 10 year extension when scheduled to begin decommissioning in 2018. The decommissioning process is similar to the destruction of a memory, as well as its future use are the major reasons why this site is chosen to host the archive program. The decommissioning process will proceed simultaneously with the construction of the archive.

For this project, we were required to design a budget travellers’ hotel designed for backpackers who travelled in Kuala Lumpur. The site of this project is situated in the intersection between the commercial area of Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Raja Laut which houses both corporate offices and tourist landmarks.

The main intention for the design is for the guests to experience traditional activities, as well as allowing the backpackers to improve their networking among backpackers, as well as the locals.

This is because the main age group for this type of travellers is of 20 to 35 years old; where their intentions for travelling are memorable experiences, as well as improve their networking.

Networking or getting together in a community is one of the fundamental aspects in a Malaysian context, especially in kampong settings. Henceforth, the concept behind this design is traditional activities in a modern setting. The name “Ngopi� itself came from the idea of community gathering in a common place, where it means to hang out in a common space and socialize, as we can see from the mamak stalls in the city itself.

This project focused on the urban studies and their contribuions in forming architecture, and vice versa. We were required to design a shelter for the homeless community of Bandung, Indonesia while raising awareness of this community among the public in an urban infill project.

PROJECT SITE

PANORAMIC VIEW OF PROJECT SITE The site for this project is situated along Jalan Dulatip, located 200 meters away from the trade capital of Bandung, Pasar Baroe. Despite its proximity to the ever bustling Pasar Baroe, Jalan Dulatip is a very quiet road, filled with small shops, Warehouses and storage. This site is a magnet for the homeless community, which makes it suitable to place a homeless shelter there.

Taking the idea of "nongkrong" (hanging out), an additional program is fit into the homeless shelter, which is a "warung" (food stall). This will not only provide the public some refreshments while working, but also make them aware of the homelessness issue in Bandung, Indonesia.

An issue with this project that needs to be addressed is the site and the psychological behaviour of the homeless people. The back alley of the site has a very high crime rate, since not many people go there. Also, the homeless community has a unique personal bubble, where they have a larger personal bubble for the public, yet smaller personal bubble among themselves.

Looking into the systems of a number of homeless shelters, the shelters are only temporary for the homeless community, either for a day or even a week, this is due to cultivate the cycle of homeless community to seek temporary refuge.

1. Site is surrounded by shop lots selling goods as well as repurposed into storage.

5. Creation of a semi private courtyard to enable sunlight to enter, as well as adding a half floor to the cafe to maximise occupancy. The courtyard will be hanging out space for both public and private parties.

6. The half floor will ban open air space to maximise sunlight to enter the courtyard and building undisrupted.

3. Accessbility for the public & semi public block and private block.

7. Looking into the roof patterns of adjacent buildings, the project will follow similar pattern, while the homeless shelter will have skylight to enable natural lighting into the site.

4. Doubling the volume of the private areas, which will be the temporary shelters for the homeless.

This project focused on the study of anthropometrics and ergonomics in architecture. By using only one material, i.e. bamboo, students were required to design a parasite architecture loccated in the campus while also exploring the material properties and potential. The program in the parasite architecture is subjective.

PROJECT BRIEF

University of Malaya is situated in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, filled with the hustle and bustle of a city. Albeit it’s neighbouring skyscrapers and elevated highways, University of Malaya; particularly the Pusat Asasi Sains (PASUM) has been a stark contrast. Tucked in between lush greeneries, PASUM has been a great spot for students and staff to unwind and relax after a day’s work, with an expansive view of the campus from the rooftop. The intention of this project is to provide a temporary escape for the students and staff in solitude. Hence, the parasite architecture reflects the idea of paradox of searching for solitude in a crowded and hectic environment.

Taking form inspiration from a twisted aluminum can, the intention was to create a serene and tranquil space within a very hectic and busy form and façade. Bamboo is perfect for this project as it is synonymous with the idea of tranquility, as well as it can be bended, stretched and cut into various experimental forms, patterns and designs to fit in the idea and program for this project.

The verticality of bamboo when arranged next to one another creates an opaque screen inwards, but also enables users to have a view of the whole campus outwards. This creates privacy without reducing the visibility of users.

1. Basic geometry (cylinder) is placed on the host building.

2. The cylinder is twisted to create a more jagged form.

3. One end of the cylinder is distorted and scaled down to reate dynamism.

4. Materiality of bamboo of being linear creates a transluscent screen for the users.

Photography has been one of my favourite pastime, especially when travelling. To be able to observe and capture an image at the right moment, that gives me adrenaline.
