FASHIONING ARCHITECTURE; THE INCUBATOR FOR FASHION

A speculative building design for London’s Brick Lane that includes retail space, design studios and workshop : the complete fashion production.

1 INTERIOR + SPATIAL DESIGN 2 ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN 3 BUILDING WITH CLOTHES: ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN TECHNICAL RESEARCH PROJECT

BRIEF

A speculative personal project task: design an interior retail space including colour scheme, furniture, a material and colour palette and a spatial arrangement for the Vivienne Westwood AW23/24 collection.

CONCEPT

The source of inspiration came from gathering themes from the campaign for this collection. Through research of its visual language, the concept of a luxury forest scape was tailored to the spatial requirements of the building. I designed furniture for the space such as a display table, mirror and the introduction of water within the interior.

BRIEF

A building for a small up and coming streetwear fashion brand of 4-6 creatives. Spaces provided for them to use to design, manufacture, display and sell clothing collections. The site will engage with the niche community of streetwear fans who will be aware of the brand via word of mouth and social media and one entrance will give them access to retail spaces to purchase new collections.

East London and the rest of the city has a community of creatives who have managed to connect via social media sharing their clothing designs made in make shift studios, photographed in make shift photoshoot sets on the streets of London and sold online. This method of fashion brand building has made the subgenre of ‘streetwear’ fashion which is more accessible for designers than previously however the infrastructure to support these designers is yet to exist in the city. This project sought to address this.

02

CONCEPT

This imaginative project takes inspiration from the fashion industry and implicates methods of fashion production into architecture through its façade and structural design and spatial arrangement.

The merchandise display will be on view to passers by on brick lane who may then become interested in the space, a second entrance will give access to retail spaces as well as clothing donation point. A larger open space will provide a point of connection for both groups and the space will become a place for community to form through learning as well as shared interest.

The creative collective will construct the spaces including design studios, instagram content photoshoot spaces, pattern cutting room, sewing room, screen printing room, fabric sorting and treatment room, runway/ event space, merchandise display and fitting rooms themselves using upcycled garment + concrete techniques.

BRIEF

In this project I designed a method for building with clothes which I have dubbed ‘garment concrete’ which synthesised the worlds of fashion and architecture by upcyling clothes for building.

By developing this method of construction, excessive concrete usage is reduceda without harming its structural integrity and takes advantage of clothing material available for upcycling otherwise sent to landfill.

Create a reference for the fabric woven form. drew the net of my building design stair case at 1:5 scale. Weave the strips through the reference model. Once hardened and form is set, remove from rig. the cardboard reference model Cut some old leggings into 50 mm width strips. old leggings Secure the

CONCEPT

At the time of writing, a global environmental crisis is in occurrence, with pollution from the construction industry through uneconomical and excessive use of materials. This same description can be applied to the fashion industry with the rise of fast fashion, the average Briton sends 72 items of clothing to landfill each year. In this context, an updated and refashioned industry is needed.
