SCHLOSSBERG RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY WITH CARPORT DESIGN YEAR: 2022 LOCATION: AUSTRIA BUILDING: RESIDENTIAL TYPE: PROFESSIONAL

As part of joining Meissl Architecture, this was the second project that was handed to me to be part of the team working on it. This house belongs to the owner of the company Alexander Meissl. He has requested it to be redesigned and rebuilt with new features. I was responsible for making the drawings, detailing them and alongside it building the 3D model with family elements designed to fit the OIB building regulation of Tyrol. With constant feedback and meeting from the client (Alexander Meissl), we worked on providing the final design to his liking and to the fittings of the building guidelines while remaining on a budget.

My second task was building a custom garage for the Schlossberg project. This garage was to fit 3 medium sized cars or 1 family car and 2 medium sized cars. The wood beam system was to be fitted into the given site according to the wood availability in the region of Seefeld and to be able to withstand the rain, snow and Pv panels that might in the future be installed.

The project was finished and handed to the construction company who is currently in the process of demolishing and building the house and its garage. This project is set to be fully ready for use by the beginning of the year 2023.

Design inspiration

Al Wathba Wetland Reserve is a hidden gem in Abu Dhabi. Thousands of birds migrate through here in the winter months. The Greater flamingo calls for all the attention and brings life to the project.

The visitor centre is influenced by the majestic movement of these migrating birds. Several routes of movement can be observed during the migration period of the birds and these inspired the symbolic elements of the building, such as the acacia roof shading and the mashrabiya details on the West facade.

Outside temperatures can reach up to 55 Celcius degrees in Abu Dhabi. Water based cooling system can be implemented into the internal walls which can be controlled by a central unit to chill the internal temperatures. Fresh, cool air can be pushed into the internal spaces through in-floor air outlets. This way air conditioning units are not installed into the ceiling, cooling units are placed within the foundation of the building. The system contributes to less energy usage and cost reduction. The terrace receives natural cooling through natural shading, by implementing a woven palm leaf roof, which rests on wooden beams. Curved roofs provide protection against accumulating sand during sand storms, ensuring further security of the building envelope. The existing parking spots have been covered with solar panel shading thus reducing energy usage and costs throughout the building.

Climate change severely impacts our world and our every day lives. The Alpine region of Italy (Dolomites) is extremely fragile to change due to its unique landscape formations. Its enormous glaciers reach heights of 3000m and carry huge amounts of water.

My proposal consists of the installation of a Hydropower dam near the valley of Cortina D’Ampezzo.

The dam was designed to generate enough energy to supply the surrounding towns with electricity.

It works through gravitational force between two dams, which are positioned at different heights to achieve this. The water runs through a power generator and being pumped back to the upper dam from the lower one at night, when demand is less, using energy harvested by wind turbines, which are also installed in this proposal.

Data analysis and representation were a fundamental part of this project, including problems and their proposed solutions.

Figure 1. Data analysis In order to take the approach of a renewable energy production scheme to the area of Cortina D’ampezzo, the energy usage of Italy had to be examined and documented. Comparing the different methods of preference for energy production in Italy, coal and gas was one of the highest with the highest footprint in the world. Wind, biomass and solar were of a tertiary source for Italy as a few to none existant projects focusing on the usage of water or air for the production of energy. Each city labeled and marked from the highest carbin footprint to the least. (Figure 1.)

The loop of the final proposal was created was to propose a dam which would capture the glaciers and rainfall coming, connected to another dam using underground pipes, the gravitational pull would allow the difference in altitude between the first and the second dam to flow the water through a generation unit which would create energy at peak times during the day. At night pumping the water back upwards, to the bigger dam as the energy required would be produced by unused energy from daytime or from the wind turbines whcih would be spread over the area. (Figure 3.)

In times of high flow of water in the second dam, water would be released to the river, flowing and being regulated by the bypass channel. Meanwhile the dam is accessible from the project my colleague will be building which would act as a green revolved aquaponic system with research and recreational facilities. The cable car would connect both projects making the area revolve around sustainability. (Figure 2.) The final results and project advantages can be seen on Figure 4.

The proposal is located in portsmouth, one of the most densely populated cities in the united kingdom. The residential project comprises of studio apartments, 1-2 and 3 bedroom apartments and various public facilities, such as restaurant, cafe, gym, art -centre, book store and grocery store. The project area is the Kingston Park, which lacks local amenities. The Domino project aims to provide local residents with convinience to every-day living.

The general shape was inspired by stacked up dominos and interconnecting public and private spaces were created.

Public sky gardens and Private terraces serve as additional green spaces to the project. The building is completely wheelchair asscessible through lift-connection between floors. Inside and outside staircases are also being placed.

Public amenities are located on the ground floor and some on the 1st floor. between first and fifth floors, various size apartments are being scattered, aiming to serve a great variety of residents. The 6th-7th floor blocks serve as double floor penthouse apartments with lavish views to the park and West-Portsmouth.

Statues and Installations create a real urban playground for local residents. A vertical Periscope is also added which creates a viewing point towards the city and the coastline.

The “artificial urban landscape’ includes shopping facilities, restaurants and a huge library, rises to 10m in height and accommodates a variety of levels and a glass pedestrian crosssing, which connects the 4 secluded elements. The existing roads are being kept by placing tunnels through the new building.

The structure carries 3 large residential domes and 3 smaller public ones. The peaks represent age groups which are being “separated” by classifying Elderly, Family and Youth peaks. This ensures privacy when claimed and serves different needs. Additional public functions serve the peaks according to their inhabitants. NHS, pharmacy, community centre serve the Elderly peak. Sports, bakery, restaurant and butterfly sky-garden make the Family residential unit enjoyable. The Youth peak has co-living spaces, offices, sky-lounge and swimming pools.

The general shape of the proposal was influenced by water ripples. Fratton, being located at the heart of Portsmouth, has the feeling of being in any other densely populated city in England. The sense of water is missing. In an abstract way , I intended to “bring the water” into the city. Fludity and power are the main adjectives of this design proposal. The following figure introduces various zones of the proposal.

The recreation ground brings these age groups together where they can play and build a strong community. My aim was to create separate private zones but keep a strong social interaction forum.

The shopping level merges with the roads, follows the landwhile the peaks create the feel of deconstructivism with their proportion. It is a futuristic building with high-rise living, moving away from tradition and looking into the needs of the future, where every function needs to be easily and quickly accessible. The size of the peaks changes according to population ratio between elderly, families and youth.

The plan shows details of the shopping level. It is on the main ground level. Tunnels cut through the building to keep the existing roads and maintain good traffic flow in the central residential area of Fratton.

Plenty of new amenities have been placed into this project to make peoples lives easier. The proposal creates a convinience for local residents.

A green area is located at the central point of the plan, which acts as a passageway. It also has the main vertical circulation point between the shopping and the upper (Peak) level.

This hybrid development replaces traditional terraced housing in the centre of Fratton. It provides contemporary living with huge open spaces. The project consist of more housing units than the area originally had, yet creates a less crowded feeling.

Community living remains at the centre of this project, however privacy is just as important, which is achieved by bigger living spaces and private green terraces adjoint to the main living space.

The above 1:200 section highlight the location of the 1:50 detail section. The 1:50 section shows the lower level of the new development with its glass pedestrian walkway, crossing through the entire shopping unit. It also includes the 2 main circulations from the lower level to the upper level residential units and gardens. This is the corre vertical connection between the ground floor development and the domes.

The final buildings becomes a landmark in Fratton and people from many locations can see it and be drawn to it. Its amenities and green areas make it an important stop for many. It becomes a first step towards a greener city. Its brutalist architectural style brings a new style to Portsmouth and revolutionises community living in the most densely populated city in the United Kingdom.

“CURL” was designed to impress. It is an elegant piece of furniture, hoping to become a decorativ element in the space just as much as to provide comfort.

The fluidity of the form allowed me to design a piece which provides a different visual experience from every angle. The wooden frame provides stability, yet its thin lines give great lightness to the entire shape.

The beige leather and dark wood complement each other.
