Performance Clinics

Performance clinics are the place for students to hone performance skills with a visiting professional who will also share their experiences of building a musical career.

They are led by Faculty Director of Performance Liz Kenny.

2020 is Beethoven’s 250th anniversary with his music being performed across the city. The Faculty will showcase lesser-known works through a series of workshops and concerts featuring international performers. Also, watch out for Beethoven in concerts by student ensembles.

Anne Dudley is a British composer, keyboardist, conductor and pop musician. She was the BBC Concert Orchestra’s first Composer in Association in 2001. She has worked in both classical and pop genres, but is perhaps best known as one of the core members of the synthpop band Art of Noise and as a film composer. In 1998, Dudley won an Oscar for Best Original Musical or Comedy Score for The Full Monty. In addition to over twenty other film scores, in 2012 she served as music producer for the film version of Les Misérables.

A practical workshop introducing key concepts and technologies relating to spatial music composition and performance - employing an 8-channel surround-sound speaker array.

Dr Annie Mahtani is an electroacoustic composer, sound artist, performer and Senior Lecturer in Music at the University of Birmingham. Her output encompasses electronic music composition from acousmatic music to free improvisation. As a collaborator, Annie has worked extensively with dance and theatre, and on site-specific installations. With a strong interest in field recording, her work often explores the inherent sonic nature and identity of environmental sound, amplifying sonic characteristics that are not normally audible to the naked ear. Her music explores abstract and recognizable sound worlds and all the spaces in between. Annie works extensively with multichannel audio both in fixed medium works and in live performance.

EMPRES will take over the Modern Art Oxford galleries to present a series of innovative performances and installations that explore the boundaries between music, art and technology. Composer and performer Atau Tanaka will lead a workshop and performance at the event.

He uses muscle sensing using the EMG signal in musical performance where the human body becomes musical instrument. He has created large scale installations bringing together sound/image, mobile, and network technologies.

There will also be performances and installations from the Oxford Music Faculty and Ruskin School of Art graduate and undergraduate communities!

The Bate Collection is the most comprehensive collection of European woodwind, brass and percussion instruments in Britain. The Bate has over 2000 instruments from the Western orchestral music traditions from the Renaissance, through the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and up to modern times. The collection exists as both a research facility and a concert venue.
