MAKI HUNTING YOU
JANET WILLIS
Janet is the painter of Cards for Keeps and she also create mosaics from recycled pottery of coastal inspired themes.
Tell us about your Genuine Jersey Products
Flowers in bloom are usually the theme for my hand painted cards. Each card is unique and I constantly evolve the designs using watercolour, acrylic inks and pen. ‘Cards for Keeps’ describes a product that will hopefully be appreciated long after the event they were given to celebrate.
My second Genuine Jersey product begins with drift wood washed up on our shores. These weather worn planks are recycled as a ‘canvas’ on which to mosaic coastal designs. Pottery plates, saucers, dishes and cups are sourced from charity shops around the island to provide the mosaic materials I use. The shape of the driftwood often inspires the image I chose to create. In addition, I appliqué and embroider pictures with a variety of themes which usually embellish cushions or lampshades.
What’s new/what’s coming up?
Driftwood of a good size is often hard to find, so I am exploring other options to mosaic coastal designs onto. Let’s just say that the possibilities are an open book, which is very exciting.
SEYMOUR CERAMICS
Julie makes functional stoneware pottery. From her initial contact with clay, she knew that I had found my passion. In retirement, she has been able to expand her hobby into a small, sustainable business, and she spends many happy hours in her home studio.
Tell us about your Genuine Jersey Products
The majority of my pieces are thrown on a potter’s wheel, although I occasionally do some hand-built work, such as tiles. My primary range centres on my love of swimming and the sea, and being in it, on it or near it. I have a range of my own, unique “swimmer” designs, which I hand paint on to my pieces, before firing them to 1200c. The pieces are dishwasher friendly, and are meant to be used, something I hope that my customers embrace. In addition to my usual pieces, I’m currently working on some unique tiles for a family member’s home, and the annual prizes for the Junior members of the Jersey Long Distance Swimming Club.
What’s new/what’s coming up? (100 words)
I’m looking forward to the new Summer Sunday Genuine Jersey Craft Markets at the Seaside Cafe at Greve de Lecq, and to continuing to supply Creative Cottage in St Peter, The Harbour Gallery, The Shed at St Catherine’s, and the Rocque Paper Co Shop at Gorey. Kat Reed (Rocque Paper) and I are also continuing our collaboration combining my swimming designs and her hand made paper and card.
In each edition we feature some of Jersey’s creators and let them share their creative visions and handmade goods with you lot, our island consumers. If you like what you see, check out genuinejersey.com and hunt them down to support our local industries!

ENTERTAINER THE
Set against rolling countryside, this four-bedroom, four-bathroom home manages to strike a rare balance between traditional character and forward-looking design. It has been reimagined from the ground up, not only as a stylish residence but as a place designed to anticipate the way we live now — and the way we might live in the years to come.
From the moment you step inside, there’s an easy flow between spaces. Two generous reception rooms invite a choice of moods - one perhaps for quiet evenings, the other for gatherings. The kitchen and dining area form the heart of the home, its doors opening directly onto landscaped gardens that extend the living space outdoors. These gardens have been planned as carefully
as the interiors, offering a backdrop for entertaining, summer suppers, or simply a morning coffee in the open air.
Upstairs, the sense of connection to the outside continues. The principal bedroom leads onto a broad, south-facing terrace, capturing the light throughout the day and offering a peaceful spot for coffee at sunrise or a glass of wine at dusk. Another bedroom includes its own balcony, creating private moments of retreat within the larger whole. A practical utility room adds another layer of everyday ease, ensuring the house is as functional as it is elegant.
Yet much of the true achievement here lies in what you don’t immediately see. Over the past few years, the house has been comprehensively upgraded. Plumbing has been entirely renewed
- with a new boiler, modern tanks, and even a dedicated feed for the principal ensuite to ensure perfect water pressure. The electrics have been fully rewired and certified, with new circuit breaker boards installed. Even the windows and doors have been replaced, quietly raising energy efficiency and comfort while maintaining a consistent aesthetic.
Technology has been woven seamlessly into the fabric of the house. Cat 6 cabling runs to most rooms, with a dedicated server cabinet housing an enterprise-grade Ubiquiti system that guarantees fast,
reliable connectivity, whether for working from home, streaming, or future smart integrations. Lighting combines the functionality of Lightwave RF smart switches with the atmosphere of Philips Hue colour-changing systems, while heating is managed room by room with smart thermostats and discreet underfloor systems in each ensuite. Somfy blinds and curtains respond to voice or app commands, or simply move to their own pre-set schedule.
The integration continues into the garage, where practicality is matched by innovation. Here you’ll find the boiler, tanks, and networking systems, as well as a fully renewed pool plant room. Even the garage door itself can be controlled by app, voice, or physical switches. Security and convenience come together in the utility room, where a smart door lock offers multiple ways to enter — from key fob to keypad to biometric recognition.
What makes this house stand out is the way these details combine. There is no sense of technology for technology’s sake. Instead, the smart systems, careful refurbishments, and tactile comforts all serve a single purpose: to create a home that feels both grounded in its countryside setting and quietly equipped for the future.
Despite its serene position, the house is far from isolated. The comfort and social hub of the St Mary’s Innn is close by and bus route are all a short walk away. The result is a property that feels self-contained yet connected, a place where modern living is given space to breathe.
Even the garage door itself can be controlled by app, voice, or physical switches. Security and convenience come together in the utility room, where a smart door lock offers multiple ways to enter — from key fob to keypad to biometric recognition. 4 BEDROOMS 4

MORTGAGE market update
Words: Peter Seymour, The Mortgage Shop
Despite the holiday season, the housing market in the Island has remained steady with positive feedback from estate agents, lenders and lawyers.
The news that the Bank of England had reduced base rate to 4% last month was well received in both the UK and the Channel Islands, with a number of major lenders in the UK reducing their fixed and tracker rates both either before and after the Bank of England’s decision.
However, fixed rate pricing is most heavily influenced by where mortgage markets expect interest rates to head in the future, and it is noticeable that a number of leading providers in the UK have already started to increase their fixed rates
After entering a historic deadlock on the most recent decision, the Bank of England might decide not to cut rates again in 2025. With inflation rising well above the ceiling of 2%, there is a greater chance that mortgage rates are unlikely to experience any further reductions this year.
THE HOUSING MARKET IN JERSEY –Update from the JEAA
John Quemard, the chairman of the Jersey Estate Agents Association confirms that the market is showing positive signs of recovery. Asking prices have steadied after two years of decline and sales activity has increased in comparison to last year.
Any reduction in interest rates will boost buyer confidence and with borrowing becoming slightly more affordable this is feeding through to a higher volume of sales.

•For sellers: Now is the time to bring a property to the market – buyers are becoming active again and realistically priced homes are selling.
• For buyers: There are more opportunities with prices lower than their 2022 peak and with mortgages being slightly more affordable.
• For the market overall: The worst of the slowdown appears to be behind us, if interest rates continue to fall, activity and confidence should keep improving at a steady pace.
MORTGAGE ACTIVITY
The team at The Mortgage Shop confirms that they are seeing an increase in activity with more mortgage applications being received following the recent rate reduction. In addition, several local lenders have now become more competitive which opens up a wider choice of options for borrowers.
On top of this, the stress testing levels imposed by lenders in the UK are now starting to be introduced by Jersey lenders which will give borrowers access to a slightly higher level of mortgage.
The offshore lending market is usually slow to react to the changes which are occurring, although it is apparent that there has been a certain relaxation in criteria to match what is occurring in the UK.
PROPERTY ON THE MARKET
A look at places.je this month shows that 1800 apartments and houses are currently on the market – this is the highest number that we have seen and clearly reflects the increased confidence by vendors.
There is a huge choice for First Time Buyers with 159 apartments in the range up to £300,000, many with parking included.
The numbers increase in the range from £300,000 to £500,000, with 424 apartments and houses available, the majority with parking as well.
Moving up to the range from £500,000 to £700,000, buyers will find 333 properties available, whilst there are 362 properties on the market between £700,000 and £1m. Above this level, there are 517 apartments and houses available up to a maximum of £10,000,000.
The increase in activity this year is clearly reflected in the number of transactions that have been passed through the Royal Court in the most recent of four weekly sittings for which statistics are available. Excluding land, and transfers between existing homeowners, there have been 115 purchases to which will need to be added share transfer statistics which are not available in the public domain but which will account for a further 25%.
These figures once again give a positive message that the market is improving. By the same token, vendors should not think that prices are on the rise as successful transactions are only happening if the asking price is realistic to start with.
Many of the properties currently advertised might not sell until their owners have reviewed their expectations of current market value.
