Editor’s Letter

I have yet to meet someone who doesn’t like travelling (I actually do know one person, but we don’t talk about Bruno). I am the kind that would love to live by Susan Sontag’s words, “I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list”. Travelling is a great way to start conversations (mainly in this part of the world where this is a common activity), get to know different cultures and try different foods, but also learn more about ourselves. It’s like seeing parts of you that are uncovered while exploring a new place. This month, we bring sites to visit around the world according to preferences. Are you into adventure escapes? Or would you love to see the place where your favourite movie was filmed? We’ve composed a list of destinations to help you choose your next journey.

Spring is here, and we celebrate the season with stylish fashion pages. From fringes to floral accents – it’s time to embrace the warm weather with a bit of fun.

As enthusiasts of everything beauty, we bring the latest beauty trends for spring and summer. We also visited two spas. We had a pampering full-body massage and facial at The Spa, The Chedi Katara Hotel & Resort, for a truly relaxing moment, and a tailored facial at Marsa Malaz Spa, Marsa Malaz Kempinski, The Pearl - Doha. Check them out!

We pleased our palates with an Italian feast at Cucina located at Marriott Marquis City Center Doha Hotel, from yummy Pinsa to heartful Filleto en Crosta, a take on Beef Wellington – a delightful food journey. And because motoring is part of our DNA, we drove the latest Audi A5 40 S Line Sedan for a smooth ride around the country – find out more about this stylish automobile. This is the April issue – I hope you enjoy all the words and images we carefully put together just for you!

A CARD UP YOUR SLEEVE

Fashion is not just about individual clothes but also how to style them. Most of the time, selecting one key element significantly affects the final outfit. These are our picks for April!

A denim A-line skirt can be the missing piece in your wardrobe this spring.

Michael Kors

added some 3D flowers to this number – a large belt complements the look!

Colour-blocking is a timeless fashion trend. This season, we are all for twotoned footwear. These wedges from Saint Laurent made it to the we-reallywant-it list.

Do you want to add one focal point element to your outfit?

Dangling earrings can do the trick. These Tory Burch ones also add a funky touch.

If you have to pick one item to add to your wardrobe, a belt with a large buckle should be it. Bally has a wide selection to choose from – cowgirl vibes, here we go!

Brandon Maxwell took the invisible footwear trend to a new dimension. These barely-there slip-ons are calling summer by its first name.

A Legacy in Time

The House of Wonders, a temporary exhibition at the Musée Atelier in Le Brassus, Switzerland, marks. Audemars Piguet's 150 years of watchmaking. Tracing the brand's journey since 1875, it highlights the artisans and techniques that have shaped its legacy. Through seven immersive stages, visitors can explore unpublished archives, a portrait gallery and interactive displays, including a forest-inspired installation. For the first time, the museum is also showcasing the work of the Audemars Piguet Foundations, which have supported over 200 projects across 80 countries since 1992. And for those who prefer hands-on learning, there are three new masterclasses. 'Shaping Materials – 150 Years' introduces participants to watchmaking materials and techniques, while 'Origins of the Royal Oak' is a deep dive into Audemars Piguet's most recognisable design. A dedicated children's masterclass lets younger visitors assemble part of the Calibre 4302 movement. Running until the end of 2026, the exhibition will also travel to Shanghai and Dubai later this year.

Where Worlds Collide

For the very first time, Christian Louboutin and Maison Margiela have come together for a limited-edition footwear collaboration. The project consists of two capsules that beautifully merge their distinct design languages. One reimagines the iconic Tabi with Louboutin's sculptural curves and signature red sole, while the other applies Margiela's decortiqué technique to classic Louboutin silhouettes, peeling back layers to expose the structure beneath. The Maison Margiela by Christian Louboutin collection features pieces such as the Bridiela Una Strass, a pump with crystals; the Loubiella, a stiletto with asymmetrical straps; and the Marlougiela, a ballerina flat, slightly elongated. The Christian Louboutin by Maison Margiela line includes pieces such as the Bilougiela 25, a pointed ankle-strap sandal with hand-applied decortiqué details and the Xrismarteen, a knee-high boot with collapsed leather strips revealing the inner lining, all of which will be available online and in select boutiques worldwide.

Precious and Practical

2025 marks the 100th anniversary of FENDI and a significant milestone for Red Wing Shoes, and to celebrate, the two brands have come together for an exciting SS25 collaboration. The collection reinterprets Red Wing's iconic Classic Moc boot (first introduced in 1952) with FENDI's top-notch craftsmanship. The design features the Italian brand's signature Cuoio Romano leather and intricate Selleria hand-stitching for an artisanal, luxe feel. Each pair undergoes a two-part construction process, starting in Italy, where FENDI's skilled leather artisans apply the signature FF interlace detailing that requires five hours of work per pair. The upper is then sent to the US, where Red Wing completes the assembly using traditional shoemaking techniques that have been perfected for over a century. Available in sienna red and natural beige, the boots bridge the gap between Italian luxury and American utility, a first-ever collaboration between the two brands.

Stepping Boldly

For Spring 2025, brands Marni and HOKA have collaborated on a reimagined version of the BONDI B3LS sneaker. The partnership brings together HOKA's high-performing footwear with Marni's off-beat design. The result is a trainer with exaggerated proportions, unexpected textures and a vivid colour palette. Available in Poinciana (red), Bracken (charcoal), Tourmaline (blue), and Straw (beige), the shoe features a rubber sole for responsiveness, cushioned EVA insoles for comfort and a lightly padded polyester upper for durability. Three sets of laces allow for customisation, from classic monochrome to an audacious multicoloured option. Marni's Creative Director, Francesco Risso, expressed, "Collaborating with HOKA has been exhilarating – an exchange of energy where their technical mastery met Marni's instinct for shape, colour and emotion. Together, we've created a bold, totemic design – sculpted a shoe that is a fearless expression of movement, volume and identity."

Fresh Perspectives

KENZO's first standalone womenswear show in eight years signals a new era under Artistic Director Nigo, the Japanese designer and streetwear pioneer known for founding A Bathing Ape and Human Made. In his Autumn and Winter 2025 collection, sharp Savile Rowinspired tuxedos are offset by fluid silhouettes, with silk camisoles, billowing crepe trousers and reworked archival prints adding an unexpected softness. A 1979 Kenzo Takada sketch featuring two playful rabbits, Lucky Me (pink) and Lucky You (blue), serves as a recurring motif, appearing as prints, embroidery and even plush hooded jackets. Contrasts define the collection, balancing masculine and feminine, structure and ease, with cropped bombers, gingham Harris tweeds and punkish khaki tones woven throughout. Accessories take cues from Nigo's streetwear legacy, with satin bowling bags, crystal pavé belt buckles and reworked slingback mules.

GOLDEN HOUR

Inspired by gold, colour and movement, Piaget’s latest Limelight Gala watches are pure artistry on the wrist.

For over five decades, the Piaget Limelight Gala collection has been a symbol of exquisite craftsmanship and sophisticated design. Known for its curves, asymmetrical lugs and seamless integration of gemstones and precious metals, the line has firmly established itself as a hallmark of timeless beauty. Every iteration of the Limelight Gala represents Piaget’s ongoing commitment to blending technicality with artistic expression, creating pieces that are as much works of art as they are timepieces. Two new editions of the Limelight Gala further cement the brand’s expertise in watchmaking, jewellery and goldsmithing.

HOUSE OF GOLD

The first new edition of the Limelight Gala collection showcases Piaget’s mastery of working with precious metals. This watch features a meticulously hand-engraved new motif that flows across the dial and bracelet, creating a wavy, almost fluid effect inspired by the soft silk gowns on the red carpet of the glamorous 1970s. The pattern brings a sense of movement to the watch, enhancing its already dynamic design. Each engraving is done by a single master artisan, taking two days to perfect, ensuring flawless consistency across the clasp and dial.

Housed within its 32mm case is the Piaget 501P1 Manufacture movement, an automatic calibre developed in-house. The curves of the asymmetrical

lugs extend from each side of the case and snake gracefully around the wrist, giving the watch a larger, more commanding presence. The combination of the hand-engraved gold pattern and the diamonds transforms the timepiece into a sophisticated accessory that can easily transition from day to night, making it the perfect choice for those who appreciate both form and function. This piece exemplifies Piaget’s long-held reputation as the House of Gold, a title the brand earned in 1957 when it decided to work exclusively with precious metals.

MASTERY OF COLOUR

The second edition, the Mesmerizing Burgundy, is a tribute to Piaget’s rich history of using colour in watchmaking. The deep, rich burgundy dial is a striking centrepiece, enhanced by Piaget’s innovative Grand Feu enamel technique. This translucent enamel allows the intricate texture beneath to shine through, creating a dynamic depth to the colour. The maroon hue is paired with a gradient of gemstones, including diamonds, pale pink sapphires and deep red rubies, creating a delicate ‘tie-dye’ effect, a rare feat achieved through meticulous stone selection. The signature handengraved motif and the 501P1 Manufacture movement continue in this edition, while the ‘70s tribute to the pigeon blood red carpet serves as the inspiration behind the dial’s deep ruby-root shade.

Pearly

FLIGHT

Tiffany & Co.’s Bird on a Rock collection has been reimagined as the 2025 Bird on a Pearl collection, with rare natural saltwater pearls from the Gulf region.

Jean Schlumberger’s Bird on a Rock is a masterpiece from the house of Tiffany & Co. Originally created in the 1960s, the whimsical bird perched on an oversized gemstone has remained a brand classic for decades. Now, under the direction of Chief Artistic Officer Nathalie Verdeille, this iconic design is reimagined as the 2025 Bird on a Pearl collection, with one of nature’s rarest treasures: natural saltwater pearls woven into the composition.

Unlike the smooth, uniform pearls commonly seen in jewellery, the pearls used in this collection are organic and unique, their shapes and hues shaped by time and tide. Some are luminous baroque pearls, while others take on soft, irregular silhouettes meant to reflect the transitions of the seasons – from the soft light of spring to the subtlety of autumn. Carefully sourced from the Gulf region, these pearls are the result of a collaboration with Hussein Al Fardan, a world-renowned expert in natural pearls. His collection, the largest from the Gulf region, has provided Tiffany & Co. with some of the rarest specimens, selected for their exceptional lustre and uniqueness. Acquiring pearls of this calibre is an extraordinary process, often taking decades to gather enough for a single high-jewellery piece, making this assortment a true rarity.

The collection develops through distinct chapters, each bringing a new perspective to the relationship between nature and design. The first chapter of the Bird on a Pearl motif revisits the original creation, with the bird now playfully perched on or seamlessly integrated with the pearls themselves. Some birds appear to be mid-flight, while others gently grasp the pearls, creating a sense of graceful movement. The Acorn and Oak Leaf pieces reference Jean Schlumberger’s archives, with the arboreal designs adorning necklaces and earrings along with large autumnal pearls. The Cascade phase embraces asymmetry, with diamond-studded branches entwining delicate pearls in fluid, natural compositions. Finally, the Ribbons chapter, inspired by the maker’s roots in the textile industry, brings movement and texture into play with strands of pearls punctuated by diamond ribbon motifs and rare coloured diamonds in shades of pink, yellow and reddish-brown.

GOLDEN HERITAGE

The iconic Italian brand Buccellati was present at the Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition. OHLALA enjoyed talking to Luca Buccellati, Director of Special Sales and VIP Customers, about the brand’s quintessential legacy.

OHLALA – Can you tell us how the jewellery universe entered your life?

Luca Buccellati – I represent the third generation of the Buccellati family, so I actually grew up on it. My dream was to be a musician, but then I gave up because I was quite okay but not a genius. Then, I chose to join the family jewellery business, and it was the right choice, to be honest. I love my job. I love to stay in touch with customers, having people around me and handmade jewellery. I also like spending many hours with our artists to see how they work. I have pieces in the exhibition that take about two years to make, so it is incredible to watch something being born.

OHLALA – What gives people a deep appreciation for jewellery? What do you think makes people love Buccellati?

Luca – They love Buccellati because everything is handmade. It’s a brand that exudes passion, heritage and history in every single piece of jewellery. Everything started in 1919 with my grandfather, Mario Buccellati, and some designs are still the same. Even the technique of making the jewellery is the same. We use three things to create a Buccellati: hands, heart and mind. You mix these ingredients and a Buccellati piece is born; we are very different. My grandfather took inspiration from the Italian Renaissance to create the designs – the passion of Italy is there. My father used to tell me that you have to smell the Buccellati jewellery. It smells good; it smells unique.

OHLALA – What part of working with or on a new collection do you find most interesting?

Luca – When it’s finished. The designs are created in the family, mostly by my cousin Andrea, and from the original drawings and sketches up to the end, they constantly change. During the whole process, more ideas come and because everything is handmade, it can be easily modified.

So, from the very beginning to the end, it’s completely different and that’s what makes Buccellati stand out. The part I like least is when I sell them. Sometimes, those beautiful jewels are my babies, and I don’t like to see them go. I know it’s crazy, but I don’t want to sell them.

OHLALA – What metals and gems can be spotted at Buccellati? Do you have a favourite?

Luca – At Buccellati, we always mix and match yellow and white gold. I think that’s a trademark – it’s kind of a signature. We might have 10% of pieces that are only white gold. But my personal favourite is yellow gold. It comes from the Romans; it’s warm and makes my heart beat faster. In terms of gems, it’s a bit more complicated. I love sapphire, aquamarine, emerald and I am deeply in love with tourmaline. It’s hard to choose only one. Because the best is when they are merged together. At Buccellati, you see a lot of samurai (which is a super shiny green stone) paired with yellow diamond. So, it’s green and yellow and if you properly mix them, bingo. The gems universe is vast and when combined the right way, the result is sensational.

OHLALA – Do you have any favourite collection or special pieces?

Luca – I love my personal collection. I have a selection of old pieces by Mario Buccellati that belonged to my father and when my father passed away, I had the honour of adding them to my collection. I like to have vintage creations from our brand. My grandfather made only two tiaras; one is in my private collection, but the other is lost in the market. The last news I had about it was that it was in the United States, maybe in Texas, and I am still after it. However, from the modern creations, there is a necklace from the Mosiaco collection that I adore.

OHLALA – Tell us more about your watches and luxurious items.

Luca – We make watches for women and men. We have the Macri line and mainly in the Middle East, our customers love them. They wear them as jewellery pieces. But the brand goes beyond with our silverware items; they are a tradition. I can say that 80% of our business is jewellery and 20% is silver. My grandfather started silverware and jewellery together and it has been like this forever. The frames are very popular, but our big centrepieces have had huge success in this region. Some other jewellery brands also used to have silver, but they lost this tradition. We will never stop making them; they are part of our heritage and DNA.

OHLALA – What are the highlights and expectations for 2025?

Luca – 2025 will be a year of further growth for Buccellati. We have many important projects in development and I am not only talking about new boutique openings but also important events and launches. One of the most important ones is definitely the second edition of The Prince of Goldsmith, an exhibition that celebrates Buccellati’s illustrious history, which will move from Venice to Shanghai. It will be a relevant event that gives us the chance to commemorate a significant milestone. This year, our Asian customers, who couldn’t participate last year, will be able to attend. We will also launch a new High Jewellery collection, which is always a great source of pride for us, and we plan to place a significant focus on silverware for 2025 in order to elevate it and make it as well known as our jewellery worldwide.

TIMELESS TIMEKEEPERS

Ali Bin Ali launched new brands in the Qatari market during the Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition, and Czapek Geneve was one of them. OHLALA had the opportunity to talk to Patrick Capek, the brand’s Chief of Staff.

OHLALA – Can you tell us how watchmaking entered your life?

Patrick Capek – In 2006, I moved to Geneva and, when you are living there, it’s automatic, you get exposed to watches. So that started my interest and just when I was researching a little bit, the brands, looking into what’s going on in the market and falling into those rabbit holes, which never let you out anymore, I discovered that Xavier de Roquemaurel wanted to resurrect an old brand called Czapek. Of course, my reaction was, wait, that’s my name without the z. I later found out that Franciszek (who later changed his name to François) Czapek was born close to Prague in the old Bohemian Empire, and my family originally comes from the same region. So there might be some ties, but I am not a descendant – it was just meant to be. The relaunch happened in November 2015, and I became a shareholder in 2016. This means that

this year we have our 10th anniversary of returning the brand to the market. And this will be a very exciting year for us because we will be launching some fascinating and very beautiful pieces.

OHLALA – How would you describe Czapek Geneve’s style?

Patrick – Everything started with a very classic watch, the Quai des Bergues, which was based on an old pocket watch from the 1850s. This was the watch that brought the brand from the past into the present. We turned a pocket watch into a wristwatch. From there, we developed the brand further, always keeping in mind and analysing the old watches from Czapek, trying to understand the driving force behind the brand and translating this into today’s concepts – we don’t simply do whatever we want. We try to set trends sometimes, but we always keep in mind,

like, would François Czapek be OK with what we are doing? The mechanics are very important; it’s not just how it looks. It doesn’t need to be extremely complicated, but we want to be old-fashioned, so the execution must be at its finest.

OHLALA – What, in your opinion, gives people a deep appreciation for watches?

Patrick – What captivated me was when I saw for the first time how a mechanical watch functions entirely without any electronics. I was able to see what people in the 17th and 18th centuries were able to accomplish without any computers calculating things. This is something that still boggles my mind. I still don’t understand how they could do a perpetual calendar in a time when there were no calculations made

by computers or something. It was all just made with some wheels, which were turning and suddenly showing even leap years. Incredible. The mechanicality of it is fascinating, which means that without any electronics, we can create something so precise and beautiful. That’s the appeal watches have for me, and I believe also for many other people.

OHLALA – What part of the watchmaking process do you find most interesting?

Patrick – I’m not in the manufacturing part of the industry. I’m into the development process and mostly brainstorming operations. I participate mainly as a quiet bystander because I am not involved in the engineering task force. So I love to see how, from the first brainstorming session, it suddenly becomes a living thing you can hold in your hand, and you remember when the first ideas were formed. So it’s a wow moment when I have the piece materialise in front of me. How it became real is fascinating.

OHLALA – What are the brand’s highlights for 2025?

Patrick – The 10th anniversary, of course, and the 180th anniversary of the original foundation of Czapek Geneve. We have a double anniversary in 2025. And there will be a brand new calibre coming later this year. We will have limited edition watches and anniversary special pieces.

OHLALA – Do you have a favourite watch?

Patrick – Yes, I have a favourite, which will be unveiled at Watches & Wonders Geneva. I cannot tell you more, but it’s right now my favourite. It is an incredible piece, so stay tuned.

OHLALA – What are the Czapek Geneve watches available at Ali Bin Ali boutiques?

Patrick – For the moment, we have primarily watches from the Antarctique collection. We have one very special piece, which is the Passage de Drake Sahara Sands with a trapezoid dial motif, the indexes in Hindo-Arabic at 12, three and nine o’clock and the date window at six o’clock, maintaining Czapek’s signature vertical symmetry. There are 25 pieces in a salmon shade and 25 in dark blue to commemorate the brand’s launch in Qatar.

JEWELLERY WATCHES WITH A DARING TWIST

Beauregard is another new name in the Qatari market under Ali Bin Ali. OHLALA spoke to the brand’s CEO, Alexandre Beauregard, to learn more about its mesmerising watches.

OHLALA – Can you tell us more about the brand?

Alexandre Beauregard – The brand was created in 2009 in Geneva, but we launched our first watch in 2019. It took 10 years of work, study, design improvement, trial and error before we launched the first watch, which was the Dahlia Central Flying Tourbillon with a haute joaillerie dial, made in gold and full set diamonds. I am the CEO of the brand and the creative director. I buy the stone, cut it, and do all the haute joaillerie dial in my workshop in Montreal, where I live. However, Beauregard is based in Geneva, it’s a Swiss brand. Apart from the gem work, everything else is made in Switzerland because it is the best place in the world to make watches.

OHLALA – How did watchmaking enter your life?

Alexandre – I know the usual way to explain it is passion. But for me, it was more like an affliction. It’s much less romantic, but that’s how I felt. I tried to get out of it but couldn’t; it was already part of me. My wife encouraged me and we thought I would do this for a while, but as we can see, it stayed, and the brand is just growing. No one in my family works in jewellery or watchmaking. I have always had an interest in art and everything I do, I learn by doing it and that’s why it took 10 years because I had to become a lapidary artist, and there is no school in the world for that, to accomplish the intricate gemwork that goes into our dials. I was lucky enough to be introduced to Yves Saint-Pierre, a legend in stonecutting in America. He took me as his apprentice and he taught me for five years how to work the stone the way we do.

OHLALA – Who is the Beauregard customer?

Alexandre – I believe that 90% of our clientele is from the Middle East. Our watches have a lot of personality, and the customers here appreciate

them. European people are much more conventional and classic. Our watches are bold and out there and need an audience that understands and values their uniqueness. And when we have a client that loves what we do, they really love it. One client bought nine watches, so that’s the impact we generate.

OHLALA – What, in your opinion, gives people a deep appreciation for watches? What do you think causes this fascination?

Alexandre – I think people nowadays don’t wear watches to know the time. We all look at our phones. I have a splendid watch, but I still look at my phone to see the time. For me, watches are magical objects. I think that’s what captures me. Because it has everything, it has intricacy, detail and precision. It has to be flawless on so many levels. It is a spectacular machine that we can carry on our wrists. I also think that there should be only one reason for buying a watch. I know there’s more than one. A lot of people buy a watch for status, which is okay. But for me, it is the fact that you have no other choice. It drives you. When you go back home, you cannot stop thinking about it. It becomes an obsession because there’s no other logical reason to buy an expensive watch. It has to be like a thunderbolt, like when you fall in love. That’s why I make watches with many colours, boldness and volume; I want my customers to fall in love with them. People don’t just buy a watch to pass the time. It has to be really something emotional that you see, and you have to have it.

OHLALA – In the past almost six years since you launched the first watch, what have been the most significant accomplishments of the brand?

Alexandre – We have five collections, and every watch we presented at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (an annual award that highlights and recognises the excellence of contemporary watchmaking, helping to promote the traditions, trades and values of Swiss and universal watchmaking heritage) was selected. That’s something great. We also launched our first men’s collection at Watches & Wonders Geneva 2024. There are many things to celebrate in such a short period of time.

OHLALA – Can you tell us more about how the jewellery line started?

Alexandre – The Gemmy Bear collection has a funny story. Every year, we attend the Tucson Gem Show in the US. It’s the biggest gem show in the world, and pretty much everyone who’s involved in jewellery, stone dials or the watch industry goes there. There are thousands of exhibitors from all over the world. During the days we are there, we always carry stones in our pockets and show each other our findings of the day and, often, they look like candy, so just for fun one year, I made gummy bears from them. I didn’t want to go into jewellery. However, when Covid-19 hit, I had time to work on them and ended up developing the collection, which is now part of Beauregard. It’s not easy to make them because you can’t mould them, and each piece needs to have the finishing polish by hand. We even make cufflinks from them. They are fun and delicate creations.

OHLALA – What are the brand’s highlights for 2025?

Alexandre – We created five collections in five years and started a jewellery collection, but we have new elements mixing watches and jewellery that will be launched at Watches & Wonders Geneva this year. We are also developing an accessories line.

LESS IS MORE

For the first time, the Jil Sander brand ventures into the world of fragrance with Olfactory Series 1, a collection that reimagines scent through minimalism.

Jil Sander’s Olfactory Series 1 is an exceptional reimagining of fragrance composition, merging natural with synthetic in a simple but dramatic manner. This collection, a fusion of botany and technology, presents six distinctive, unisex scents shaped by the radiant clarity of aldehydes (a group of synthetic perfume ingredients). The perfumes challenge traditional fragrance structures, stripping down to only the essentials of three key natural ingredients: aldehydes, alcohol derived partially from upcycled carbon emissions and water.

Minimalism and precision are at the core of this series, with each scent designed to evoke personal memories, sensory epiphanies and the nuances of everyday life. The aldehydes serve as an olfactory amplifier, enhancing the potency of the ingredients while creating an interplay of structure and fluidity. The result is a series that is both radical and refined, with each distinct fragrance being an intimate yet expressive aromatic experience.

Leaf: A sharp, soft, zesty scent reminiscent of freshly picked black krim tomato leaves, heightened by key lime, cardamom and cornmint.

Miel: A woody and bright blend of buckwheat honey, cedarwood and vetiver, enriched with radiant floral notes from jasmine grandiflorum.

Black Tea: A smoky, ambery scent with osmanthus, cinnamon and black tea, evoking warmth and depth.

Earth: A contemporary take on chypre rose, combining the delicate facets of rose centifolia and patchouli with the wet, organic essence of matsutake mushroom.

Coffea: A contrast of floral and ambery tones, blending coffee, orris and Peru balsam for a rich yet powdery fragrance.

Smoke: A deep and enigmatic composition of cedarwood, cade and elemi, cut through by aldehydes for a smoky yet clean allure.

The design of the bottles mirrors the assemblage’s philosophy, with each being uniquely shaped, featuring organic imperfections that make them as distinctive as the fragrances they contain. Designed in collaboration with the design studio, Formafantasma, the asymmetrical glass bottles and bell-shaped aluminium caps reflect both craftsmanship and industrial innovation, reinforcing the quiet and powerful aesthetic.

FRESH AND FIERCE

Spring and Summer 2025 beauty trends are all about contrasts, and Bushra Hakim takes us through the most sought-after styles.

Spring and summer beauty is having a moment, one that’s playful, unpredictable and effortlessly cool. The runways have spoken, and this season is all about extremes. On one end, we have smudged grunge eyes and feline flicks bringing the drama, while on the other, blurred skin and soft stains whisper quiet luxury. And just when you think it’s all about minimalism, electric lashes and sculpted lips demand attention. This time, make-up is anything but predictable.

GRUNGE EYES

The early 2000s are making a comeback and, this time around, it’s all about undone, smudgy, lived-in eyes. Grunge-inspired make-up is one of the biggest trends, bringing an effortless, rebellious energy to the beauty world. Think soft, diffused black and brown shadows that look like they’ve been worn all day (in the best way possible, of course). The trick to nailing this look is imperfect application, such as blending out your liner with your fingers or a smudging brush for a sultry, slept-in effect. Pair it with fresh, glowing skin to keep things clean rather than messy, as seen in Dior’s Spring and Summer 2025 show.

JUST KISSED LIPS

Soft, blurred and utterly romantic, the bitten lip trend is taking inspiration from Korean beauty. The look mimics the natural flush of lips after sipping on berries or stealing a kiss. Instead of sharply defined edges, the colour is concentrated in the centre and softly fades out. This can be achieved by dabbing lipstick or tint onto the lips and blending it out with your finger or a fluffy brush.

FUN LASHES

Mascara is no longer just black or brown. Rainbow lashes are getting a colourful upgrade, with neon and pastel shades stealing the spotlight. Electric blue, vibrant pink, sunny yellow and even lilac-coated lashes have made a statement on the runway. Whether you go all out with a full coat of colour or subtly layer a bright hue on your lower lashes, this trend adds an unexpected twist to any make-up look. For a high-fashion style, pair bold lashes with bare skin and a glossy lip to keep it eye-catching, just like the ones at Dries Van Noten’s show.

LIP LINER ONLY

Lip contouring is in, bringing a sculpted, lifted effect to the pout without the need for injections. The key to this trend is using a combination of lip liner, concealer and subtle shading to create the illusion of fuller lips. A slightly darker liner blended seamlessly into a lighter lip shade gives a natural plumpness, while a touch of highlighter on the cupid’s bow enhances the shape, as demonstrated by Pat McGrath at Dolce & Gabbana. This technique works with any lip colour, but by keeping the lip liner’s shade the darkest.

BLURRY NO-MAKE-UP MAKE-UP

Barely-there beauty is a mainstay for spring and summer but, this season, it’s getting a fresh update with blurred, soft-focus skin. Unlike the ultradewy looks of previous years, this trend leans into velvety, lightweight finishes that give the skin a filtered, smooth effect without looking heavy. Achieved using sheer foundations, soft-focus powders and minimal concealer that allows freckles and natural skin texture to shine through. It’s the ultimate ‘effortless but polished’ aesthetic, like the ones on the shows of Gucci, Bottega Veneta and many more.

SUNKISSED PINK

Blush grabbed a lot of attention this time around, with a warm, sunkissed effect that mimics the natural glow of a day at the beach. Instead of placing blush only on the apples of the cheeks, this trend sweeps colour across the cheeks, nose and temples for a fresh, slightly sunburnt look. Peach, terracotta and warm rose tones are the go-to shades, adding a soft warmth to the face.

LIP STAINS

For those who want a long-lasting lip without the maintenance of reapplying lipstick, lip stains are back in a big way. These lightweight, water-based formulas give a sheer wash of colour that melts into the lips, creating a natural flush that stays put all day. Unlike traditional matte liquid lipsticks, stains feel weightless and comfortable, making them ideal for hot summer days. Shades like raspberry, burnt orange and pinky-nude were among the most popular on the runways.

FELINE WINGS

Eyeliner is getting sharper, sleeker and more seductive. The feline flick is making waves now, with elongated, lifted wings that add instant drama to the eyes. This isn’t your typical cat-eye, this version is ultra-precise, drawing inspiration from old Hollywood glamour with liner starting off from the inner corners of the eye. Whether you want a crisp liquid liner or a softly blended pencil version, the key to nailing this trend is creating an upward flick that flatters your eye shape. You can also experiment with unexpected shades like deep navy, espresso brown or even grey.

SERENITY MODE

A moment of tranquillity at The Spa at The Chedi Katara Hotel & Resort is what AMS experienced during her visit.

We all have our coping mechanisms. For some, it’s a long walk. For others, it’s working out, cooking or going to the movies. Mine is spa treatments – booked when life starts to feel over-full or when my shoulders have inched far too close to my ears. This visit to The Chedi Katara was one of those reset moments: a chance to reclaim some calm.

HUSH MEETS HERITAGE

The entrance to the spa set the tone beautifully. Low lighting, carved wooden arches and a calming symmetry of dark and pale stone across the floor. It was quiet in that purposeful way that instantly lowers your pulse. A single white settee framed in a soft alcove offered a hint of what was to come –luxurious touches with just the right amount of restraint. Bowls of floating petals and tall candle lanterns all whispered indulgence and opulence. Check in was swift and discreet, and I was led through to the treatment area. While waiting for Maria (my therapist) to come, I was offered a choice of peppermint or chamomile tea. The space opened into the bright, billowing white of the relaxation lounge, with natural sunlight creating a peaceful retreat. Each chair was angled to catch the soft morning light, with Moroccanstyle lamps poised for twilight.

MEETING THE THERAPIST

My therapist, Maria, greeted me with a warmth that was professional but personal. The Spa Suite itself was both elegant and intimate, with a plush massage bed at the centre, a deep bathtub set within a soft-lit alcove and a changing area tucked discreetly beyond. Gentle candlelight glowed from the floor, casting soft reflections across the polished wood, and a carved lantern suspended above the bath offered a delicate focal point.

After changing into a plush robe, one of the softest and most luxurious I have ever worn, I was invited to begin with a traditional Foot Ritual –a calming foot cleanse using lavender-scented gel followed by a sea salt scrub. As Maria worked gently on my feet, I sipped hibiscus tea infused with cinnamon, known for its antioxidant properties. GHM’s signature products, sourced from Singapore, were used throughout the treatment. Next, she explained that my treatment would be a traditional Balinese massage – known for its combination of palming, stretching, effleurage (circular stroking with the palm) and pressure point techniques. We talked briefly about where I tend to carry stress (neck and shoulders), and she nodded with the quiet confidence of someone who’s seen it all before.

ANCIENT BALINESE MASSAGE

Before the massage began, I was invited to choose from four signature oil blends: Relax, Revive, Orient or The Chedi Bespoke. Each had its own distinctive character and therapeutic purpose. I opted for Orient, which combined May Chang, mandarin and rosewood into an anti-ageing and healing blend, designed to have an energising and balancing effect on my nervous system.

The massage bed was heated, offering an instant cocoon of comfort. Maria checked in to ensure the room temperature was to my liking before beginning with a series of long, flowing strokes designed to ease me into stillness. Her hands moved in rhythmic palming motions across my back, punctuated by firmer pressure on key tension points. As the treatment progressed, she used a combination of gentle stretches, thumb pressure and kneading to coax every knot and ache into submission. She moved fluidly from one technique to another – effleurage melting into acupressure, sweeping arm work replaced by firm, intuitive movements across my calves and feet. Every so often, she asked if the pressure was suitable, constantly adjusting with care.

By the time she reached my shoulders and neck, any lingering tension had already begun to dissolve. But it was the final head and scalp work that truly emptied my mind. I drifted in and out of a trance-like state, neither asleep nor fully awake, suspended somewhere in the deep quiet of the treatment room. It was the kind of massage that didn’t just address the body – it recalibrated everything.

THE FACIAL

This 30-minute facial began with a thorough double cleanse to clear away surface impurities, followed by a saffron and frankincense exfoliation that refined texture and boosted radiance. A purifying mud mask was applied next, drawing out toxins and calming the skin with the help of wild turmeric. The scent of exotic Kashmir lavender added a soothing layer to the experience, helping to relax both skin and senses. By the end, my complexion felt brighter, lighter and noticeably fresher – a quick yet transformative treatment that delivered more than expected.

As I left The Spa at The Chedi Katara, I felt rejuvenated and refreshed, with a lingering sense of calm. The serene ambience, expert care and thoughtful treatments combined to create a truly indulgent and therapeutic experience. I look forward to returning soon to this tranquil haven.

Face

Seeking a flawless complexion, SD visits Marsa Malaz Spa for a facial promising radiant and glowing skin.

Marsa Malaz Spa, located on the lower ground floor of the luxurious Marsa Malaz Kempinski, The Pearl - Doha, is my escape today for an afternoon of pure pampering and indulgence.

For a majestic walk through the stunning hallways of this five-star luxury hotel, the spa is best accessed from the main entrance. It can also be entered directly through a dedicated entrance near Harry’s Dolce Vita.

I head through a maze of wooden beams, past a beautiful water fountain, to arrive at the spa reception. I fill out the consultation form in the waiting area. Since today’s treatment is a facial, I specify that I would like to focus on dark circles and puffiness.

The spa is large, with plenty of dedicated relaxation areas and an indoor pool. An intricate rose mosaic on the pool floor creates a shimmering centrepiece and adds plenty of aesthetic value to this space. I can hear subtle sounds of cascading water nearby, making this the ideal start to my relaxation journey. I spend a few minutes before the treatment begins, admiring the ambience along with some warm green tea and dates.

The mosaic patterns extend beyond the pool, weaving their way across the walls with varying designs, each unique in its own way.

As I pass by the sauna, shower and locker room, where I’ve secured my belongings, the scent of essential oils lingers in the air. I can’t help but get excited about the 75-minute luxury facial that’s about to begin.

Today’s treatment is called Hydration of the Bisses – a luxurious bath that revitalises and hydrates the skin. Some of the benefits include restoring plumpness, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and promoting skin hydration through a newfound glow.

My therapist, Dalila, gives me some information about the different steps and then proceeds to escort me to a private treatment room with a heated spa bed. Just perfect.

I lie down and get into relaxation mode as my therapist starts with an eye make-up remover, followed by a make-up remover for the whole face. Valmont – a renowned Swiss cellular cosmetics and skincare brand – is the choice of product today. The brand’s cleansers are a sensory experience. Dalila kicks off a three-step cleansing routine with Icy Falls, a cream that really permeates my pores while gently cleansing from deep within. She massages it into my skin with a butterfly movement technique. It’s robust and effective as it really digs beneath the surface layers and cleanses makeup and impurities that have penetrated upper skin layers. The second step is exfoliation to remove dead skin. She doesn’t just focus on the face but extends to the neck, shoulder and upper chest areas. Every inch is polished for a smooth, radiant finish. The final step is the most pleasing one. Valmont’s Bubble Falls cleansing foam is applied through a gauze and rolled over the skin. The mild effervescence feels soothing and indulgent. Dalila continues with a toner, followed by a spray primer. I then experience the main event – a massage with H2O boost through a hydration ampoule. This water-based solution is great for complexion hydration and it stays on for a long time. I really enjoy this face massage. Dalila may have strong hands, but she knows exactly how to manoeuvre them to ensure a gentle face massage, applying the right pressure at different points. I catch a quick snooze – it’s irresistibly relaxing. Next, she applies a collagen mask to infuse the skin with hydration and firming benefits. The mask brings a tingling sensation (completely normal and natural as it has activators), but once taken off, the difference is instant. I can feel my skin tighter and if I had a mirror, I’m pretty sure I would look younger, too. Removing the mask, Dalila wipes off any residue with a hot towel, leaving my skin ready and prepped for the next step.

She applies a nourishing face serum all over my face and neck, gently massaging it in to enhance absorption and hydration. She targets my under eye area with an eye serum, gently with featherlight movements, to really focus on puffiness and dark circles. Then she finishes off with a face cream. Before applying some sun cream to conclude the treatment, Dalila surprises me with a hand massage. Unexpected but much needed, her strong hands weave through my palms as she states her realisation of how tense they are. She uses a silky moisturising cream and really kneads it in, and my hands feel great after.

It’s time for the final step – a luxurious sunscreen because it’s still day time and I might consider going for a walk in the sunshine. She gently rubs it

on and then hands over a mirror, turning the lights on. I see hydrated, refreshed and wonderfully glowing skin, and I feel better than ever. They were right about the post-facial glow. It’s incredible what a 75-minute facial treatment can do for your well-being and the Hydration of the Bisses is a great option for anyone looking to really pamper themselves with a lush therapy that actually prioritises and enhances your skin health.

It’s a pity to move from the heated bed, but this also means I can warm up further with a heated cup of green tea. I sit comfortably on a leather couch inside the private treatment room and relax for a few more minutes before concluding a truly rejuvenating afternoon at Marsa Malaz Spa. Dalila has worked her magic, and it’s going to be a long time before I forget today’s experience.

WHERE TO NEXT?

Ready to trade the usual for the exceptional? We’ve got you covered.

We travel for many reasons. Some of us seek adventure, others look for solace, while some simply want to lose themselves in the beauty of the unknown. Travel has a way of opening our eyes to the world and expanding our horizons in a way that nothing else can. It’s not just about the places but also the stories we collect, the people we meet and the experiences that shape us. Every journey is an opportunity to break free from the routine, to feel something new and to bring back memories that enrich our lives. That’s why we’ve curated a collection of experiences that serve a purpose. Whether you’re yearning for an escape under a canopy of stars, chasing the thrill of adventure or indulging in the simple pleasure of food, these places offer something for everyone. So, if you’re ready to venture out of your comfort zone and have a good time, here are a few handpicked experiences that promise to make your travels truly valuable.

Luxury Under the Stars

Camping isn’t for everyone, but glamping? That’s another story. Waking up in the heart of the wilderness, surrounded by untouched nature, is a feeling like no other, especially when comfort isn’t compromised. Wadi Rum, in Southern Jordan, feels like the planet Mars, with its rust-red dunes and dramatic rock formations. Bubble tents offer the rare chance to sleep under a sky so alive with stars it’s almost hypnotic. For those drawn to rugged, untamed beauty, Patagonia’s EcoCamp in Chile puts you right in the shadow of the towering Torres del Paine mountains, with geodesic domes that merge perfectly into the landscape. You wake to the sight of jagged peaks piercing the sky and fall asleep to the distant howl of the wind. For a magical escape, the White Desert’s Echo Camp in Antarctica offers futuristic pods set against an endless expanse of ice, where the silence is so absolute it feels almost sacred. Watching the sun cast long shadows over the icy wilderness or witnessing a storm roll in over the white terrain is a humbling reminder of nature’s raw power. The sheer remoteness makes every moment feel like an expedition into the unknown, where time slows, and the vastness of the world truly sinks in.

GYORGY LAKATOS AT PEXELS
JODAARBA

Thrills Across the Globe

For the adrenaline junkies, the world is your playground. Queenstown, New Zealand, often called the adventure capital, is home to the legendary Nevis Bungy, a 134-metre drop that isn’t for the faint-hearted, perfect for those who like to live on the edge. If water-based thrills are more your style, head to Nazaré, Portugal, where daredevils attempt to surf some of the biggest waves on the planet, that can be as tall as over 20 metres high. For the ones who crave adventure at high altitudes, Armenia’s Caucasus Mountains are more than just scenic views. The rugged cliffs are a playground for rock climbers, while paragliders can soar over the deep gorges and valleys. And if you’re looking for an ultimate test of endurance, Chamonix in France is the one. A place where seasoned skiers and mountaineers take on the towering Mont Blanc and its heart-pounding descents. These locations ensure that your heartbeat will match the pulse of the adventure itself.

A Feast for the Senses

Some cities don’t just serve great food; they live and breathe it! Gaziantep, Türkiye, is a fever dream for foodies, where the scent of sizzling meats and aromatic spices lingers in the air. Kebab culture is practically an art form, with over 40 variations to devour, right from the smoky, aubergine-kissed alinazik to the sesame-crusted simit kebab. And with over 30 varieties of desserts, let’s not forget the legendary baklava with its flaky, syrupsoaked layers packed with the world’s finest pistachios, so treasured that it’s been granted protected status. Then there’s Naples in Italy, a city where food isn’t just fuel – it’s passion. A true Neapolitan pizza, with its leopard-spotted crust, sweet San Marzano tomatoes and pools of creamy fior di latte mozzarella, is an out-of-this-world experience. But Naples doesn’t stop at pizza, it’s got an entire repertoire of mouthwatering dishes. Think ricotta-filled sfogliatella, rich and hearty ragu, spaghetti alla puttanesca made of olives and capers, and delicate baba drenched in syrup. You’ll also find seafood feasts that taste like the Mediterranean itself, from salty-sweet anchovies to plump, just-shucked clams tossed into garlicky linguine. These places are sure to be etched on your memory and palate forever.

Step into the Movies

If you’ve ever wanted to be a part of your favourite films, here’s your chance. In Greece, head to the island of Skopelos which doubled as the backdrop for Mamma Mia, where whitewashed houses meet brilliant blue waters, and every turn feels like a scene from a musical. Fans of The Lord of the Rings can step straight into Middle-earth by visiting Hobbiton in New Zealand, where the green hills of Matamata brought J.R.R. Tolkien’s world to life in minute detail. Meanwhile, in Savoca, Italy, you can sip an espresso at Bar Vitelli, just like Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) did in The Godfather, and feel like you’re part of cinematic history. These locations aren’t just places; they’re experiences that transport you beyond reality and into the stories that have captivated audiences for generations. Standing where film legends once did, you’ll find yourself caught between fiction and reality, making every moment feel like a scene of your own.

DIMITRIS VETSIKAS AT PIXABAY

For the Love of Animals

Wild animals belong in the wild and seeing them roam free in their natural habitats is an experience that no zoo or enclosure can ever replicate. In Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, trekking through misty jungles to meet a family of mountain gorillas is a humbling, once-in-a-lifetime encounter, bringing you face-to-face with creatures so human-like, it’s almost surreal. Meanwhile, in the Canadian Arctic, Churchill is one of the best places in the world to see polar bears as they navigate the icy tundra, a rare glimpse into a world untouched by human interference. And for those drawn to the African savannah, Kenya’s Maasai Mara offers breathtaking safari experiences, where lions, elephants and cheetahs move freely across golden grasslands, just as they have for centuries. Each of these moments is a powerful reminder of how diverse and delicate our planet’s ecosystems are. To witness wildlife in its purest form is to appreciate the beauty of nature as it was meant to be – untamed and truly free.

Where to Find the Best of the Best

Some treasures are truly worth the journey. In Buenos Aires Argentina, leather goods are a piece of art, crafted by skilled artisans who pour generations of know-how into every stitch. From butterysoft jackets to hand-stitched shoes and bags, each piece only gets better with time. For lovers of silk, what could be a better place than the birthplace of the cherished fabric? Suzhou in China is a gold mine of delicate, shimmering silks woven on ancient looms with the kind of intricate artistry that turns every piece into memorabilia. In Marrakech, Morocco, the souks sell more than just handwoven rugs; they offer pieces of history. Each rug, alive with colour and tradition, carries the whispers of the generations who’ve woven it, with a story in every thread. Shopping in these places is so much more than picking up something pretty; it’s about connecting with the hands that made it, the traditions that fuel it and the memories you’ll carry with you long after you leave.

Go Before It’s Gone

Not all places will be around forever. Climate change is reshaping the world, and some destinations are at risk of disappearing. The Galápagos Islands, Ecuador, home to some of the planet’s most unique wildlife, face rising temperatures and changing ecosystems that threaten the delicate balance. Conservation efforts are ongoing, but the window to see these islands in their most pristine state is narrowing. Alaska, with its massive glaciers and remote beauty, is also seeing rapid change as warming temperatures lead to ice loss at an alarming rate. Visiting these places now isn’t just about witnessing their beauty but also about understanding the urgent need to protect them before they fade into memory. These landscapes remind us of the fragility of our planet and the responsibility we have to preserve them for future generations.

An Italian FEAST

Cucina brings rustic Italian charm to the heart of Doha, and AMS went there to check it out.

The hum of conversation, the clink of cutlery and smooth melodies greeted us as we stepped into Cucina, at Marriott Marquis City Center Doha Hotel. The scent of freshly baked dough and simmering sauces filled the air. The entrance set the tone – a vintage Italian moped parked beside rustic barrels, an open kitchen with flames flickering from the oven and the warm glow of pendant lights illuminating exposed brick walls. It felt like walking into a lively trattoria, the kind we visited in Rome or Milan while on holiday.

A CHEF WITH PASSION

We were seated in plush leather chairs near the jazz singer, who moved seamlessly from modern hits to timeless classics, adding to the lively yet intimate ambience. For a Monday night, the restaurant was impressively busy, a sign that Cucina has a loyal following. Before our meal began, we met Chef Claudio, a man whose passion for Italian cuisine was selfevident. With over two decades of experience, he brought a deep respect for tradition while adding his own creative touch. He talked us through the evening’s menu, introducing several new dishes that had recently been added, giving us the first taste of Cucina’s evolving culinary offerings.

STARTERS THAT SET THE TONE

To start, we sampled the Caprese Burrata, a simple yet indulgent dish where a delicate burrata, its centre rich and creamy, melted into thick slices of ripe tomato. A drizzle of basil-infused olive oil brought everything together, elevating the natural sweetness of the ingredients. Alongside it, we tried the Pinsa, a precursor to modern pizza, made with a unique blend of rice and soy flour that gave the base a wonderfully fluffy texture, crisped just enough at the edges. Topped with smoky aubergine, roasted peppers and creamy ricotta, it was light yet packed with flavour, a perfect contrast to the classic indulgence of the burrata.

ITALY ON A PLATE

With our appetites piqued, we moved on to the mains, each one showcasing the depth of Cucina’s menu. The Agnolotti di Carne, a Bolognese-style stuffed pasta, arrived with a generous portion of spicy meatballs. The pasta, delicate parcels filled with rich, slow-cooked meat, paired beautifully with the deep, savoury sauce, while the meatballs added a bold kick of heat. The Risotto e Osso Buco was a highlight, featuring a slow-braised, milk-fed veal shank, its tender meat falling effortlessly off the bone. The creamy, saffron-infused risotto absorbed the rich, meaty essence of the dish, with a finishing touch of lemon gremolata that lifted the flavours with a bright, citrusy edge. Then came the Filleto en Crosta, a take on Beef Wellington that delivered both comfort and sophistication. The tender beef, wrapped in delicate layers of golden pastry, was complemented by a spinach filling, adding a subtle earthiness. A drizzle of mushroom jus completed the dish, deepening the umami notes and tying everything together. Like many others on the menu, this dish was a new addition – one that is sure to become a favourite for those looking for a hearty, expertly crafted main.

REFRESHING PAIRINGS

To complement the meal, we sampled a selection of mocktails, each offering a distinct flavour profile. The Cucina Passione blended passion fruit with fresh lemon juice and ginger ale, creating a refreshing yet slightly tangy drink with a hint of spice from the ginger. The Mojito Italiano was a berryinfused take on the classic mojito, where fresh lime and mint balanced the natural sweetness of the fruit. Lastly, the Mela Cetriolo stood out with its crisp combination of cucumber, green apple syrup and fresh lemon juice, making for a light and revitalising option. The drinks were refreshing after the rich food, adding depth.

A GRAND FINALE

With the restaurant still buzzing around us, our appetites were satisfied, but we felt compelled to look at the dessert menu. The decadent Chocolate Globe just called my name, and I couldn’t resist giving in! It arrived as a smooth, glossy sphere, only to crack open and reveal hidden brownie pieces smothered in a vibrant raspberry coulis. The contrast between the rich, fudgy interior and the sharp tang of the fruit sauce created a perfect balance, making it as visually striking as it was delicious. Between the vibrant atmosphere, the warmth of the staff and the sheer quality of the food, it was easy to see why this restaurant remains a firm favourite in Doha. Cucina isn’t just about food; it’s an experience – one where tradition, hospitality and flavour come together in perfect harmony. When you want a little piece of Italy, this is your go-to place.

STYLE AND COMFORT MEET POWER

OHLALA SPENT TIME WITH THE NEW AUDI A5 40 S LINE SEDAN, A BEAUTIFULLY DESIGNED CAR INSIDE AND OUT WITH FIRSTCLASS TECH AND FEATURES.

025 marks a new chapter in Audi's prosperous history. After 30 years of successful A4 production and sales, this worldrenowned brand has sharpened the design of its much-loved saloon and is now launching it under the upgraded A5 series. This month, OHLALA had the privilege of test-driving this fresh-faced formation, compliments of the team at Audi Qatar.

DYNAMIC DESIGN

We have always loved the A4; however, the moment the completely redesigned A5 came into view, we applauded the upgrade. Firstly, the vehicle proportions have been clearly modified, with a longer wheelbase, large wheels and a low sporty body that defines firstclass construction. The compact-looking greenhouse has been elegantly crafted, flowing seamlessly to the rear in a sweeping arc. The rear window has a coupé-esque look, emphasised by the short yet stylish tailgate. An eye-catching spoiler lip adds an extra touch of athleticism.

Staring at the saloon head-on, we could not miss the wide and significantly flatter proportioned Singleframe with its three-dimensional honeycomb structure. Complementing this flattering design element are the slim and visually appealing LED headlights that can be personalised with eight

different designs, providing additional shape to the face of the A5. We also loved how the bonnet has been expertly integrated into the bumper. Once at the back end, we took in the new rear hatch, which opened smoothly with the rear window, allowing easy access to the sizable 445-litre luggage compartment, a space that can be increased up to 1,299 litres with the rear seating folded flat – a brand-new saloon design concept for Audi. The rear, three-dimensionally offset LED light strip endows the back end with real presence, telling everyone on the roads, "You've just been passed by the new A5”. A modern bumper design, complete with a dark diffuser and high-end rectangular exhaust tips, further amplifies the top-quality character of this creation.

NEXT LEVEL INTERIOR

We expected a classy and comfortable cabin in the new A5, yet we were still surprised by the human-centric design.

Boasting a generous sense of space, premium comfort levels and highend materials throughout, the A5 ticks all the first-class boxes one would expect from Audi. What impressed us most was the clear layout and easy operation of the interior, as everything seemed to be geared towards the needs of the occupants.

"Boasting a generous sense of space, premium comfort levels and high-end materials throughout, the A5 ticks all of the first-class boxes one would expect from Audi."

Tech-wise, this sporty saloon houses a new operating concept that increased interaction with the vehicle thanks to the E³ (End-to-End Electronic Architecture). Its core elements are five high-performance computers, which Audi calls High Computing Performance (HCP). They cover all vehicle functions – from the drivetrain and assistance systems to the infotainment and comfort systems to the safety systems and back-end networking.

We found the Digital Stage to be extraordinary. It features a slim, freestanding Audi MMI panoramic display with a curved design and OLED technology. It comprises the Audi virtual cockpit with an 11.9-inch visible screen diagonal and a 14.5-inch MMI touch display. Furthermore, our test drive model contained the optional 10.9-inch MMI front passenger display, which was perfectly integrated into the dashboard design. The new panoramic glass roof consists of six segments that can be made either transparent or non-transparent. You can decide yourself via the MMI touch display at which point the sun can enter.

Having inspected so many vehicles over the years, we always love discovering something new. Audi delivered on this. The A5 has a configurable headup display that has been further developed compared to its predecessor. It was the first time we have been able to control vehicle and infotainment functions via the head-up display. A truly novel experience for us seasoned test drivers.

CAPABLE ENGINE CAPACITY

Audi has delivered a fresh powertrain for the new A5. This construction consists of the new MHEV plus system based on a 48-volt on-board electrical system. It supports a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder combustion engine that produces a maximum output of 150hp and a maximum torque of 280Nm.

The moment we engaged the ignition, the sound of the capable powertrain roared into action. Gently applying weight to the accelerator, we could feel the available capacity waiting to be called forth.

Cruising casually in this front-wheel drive, we could feel the cornering and braking abilities of the new A5 to be top-notch. Combined with the suspension system, this setup was an exceptionally comfortable ride. Audi has clearly developed the suspension to ensure the A5 offers precise, effortless and largely neutral handling.

Once at our test site, we pressed the pedal to the metal, pushing the 2.0-litre engine to its limits. We managed to smoothly power the new A5 from 0 – 100km/h in a respectable 9.8 seconds. This seductive saloon also offers a top speed of 214km/h.

Another aspect of this powertrain that impressed us was the PTG, which can add up to 18kW of electric power to the overall output of the combustion engine. When decelerating, the PTG feeds energy back into the battery (recuperation) at up to 25kW.

Needless to say, Audi has included an array of safety and driver assistance systems to ensure the well-being of you and your loved ones whilst out on the roads.

OUR VERDICT

In the new A5, Audi has provided high levels of comfort, performance, safety and technology that are sure to stand out in the upper mid-sized saloon segment.

THE FASHION CAROUSEL

Miss Ohlala always has something interesting to fill you in on.

While some are taking new seats, others are walking away. Jonathan Anderson has bid farewell to Loewe. The designer, who reinvented the brand with his modern, artsy touch, is moving on, though where to go next remains a mystery. If rumours have it, it’s probably to Dior.

Filling in on the mystery from last month, Gucci has officially announced Demna as its new Creative Director. Known for his controversial, boundarypushing work at Balenciaga, his appointment signals a new chapter for the Italian luxury house. Will Gucci embrace Demna’s disruptive vision, or will he adapt to the house’s heritage? Only time will tell.

And just like that, the reign of Donatella Versace as creative director has come to an end. After nearly three decades of running the house, she’s passing the torch to Dario Vitale, who’s set to take over from April. But she’s not going anywhere! Donatella will now serve as the Chief Brand Ambassador, keeping Versace’s legacy alive. And if that wasn’t enough, there are reports surfacing that Capri Holdings may sell Versace to Prada; we wonder how that’s going to change the brand’s trajectory.

In beauty, an industry giant is making its grand entrance. Louis Vuitton is officially launching its own beauty line, La Beauté Louis Vuitton, tapping none other than the legendary Pat McGrath as Creative Director. Given Pat’s magic touch, this is most likely a beauty empire in the making. Stay tuned for more!
