Editor’s Letter

For some reason, it feels like the beginning of something, as if a new cycle is unfolding. We have a brandnew school year starting and a revamped wardrobe to plan – Autumn and Winter (AW) Trends are where our eyes (and fashion energy) should go – but the whole vibe in the air suggests that we are stepping into something unexplored. It might just be me; I have to confess that changes in the season have this effect on my mood. As a lover of clothes and shoes, I can’t wait to wear the new trendy cuts and styling ideas that designers are bringing to the table. You can check out our edit to see what will be trending.

Beauty is our bread and butter. We selected some cool products and went for a pampering session at Heavenly Spa by Westin, The Westin City Centre Bahrain. We also examined and selected some of the beauty trends from the AW2025 catwalks to inspire your everyday and evening make-up style.

I know the weather can be harsh in this part of the world, but we must admit that we have some of the most amazing hotels and resorts to compensate for the climate, offering spectacular experiences. My family and I spent a restful day at Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain, where we enjoyed a fantastic time enveloped in luxury and exceptional food.

Still in hospitality mood, Bushra Hakim had the chance to check out what Hilton Dubai Creek Hotel & Residences had to offer – stunning views made the top of the list.

Our food radar led us to The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain, where we tried the delectable French cuisine at La Table Krug – the perfect destination for those seeking a posh yet homey ambience with unique creations. And to please our motoring drive, we navigated the city behind the wheel of the Audi Q8 55 TFSI. It was a stylish journey filled with German flair.

Enjoy your read! Wishing you a happy new cycle (if you share the same feeling as I do).

HAS FASHION GONE TOO FAR?

Every new season, we pick some of the strangest creations out there. We certainly love how provocative the fashion world can be, but would we wear these? Hmm…not so sure.

Bunny ears. Coach has always had an edgy style, so you can always expect something unusual in its collections. This season, we have headbands shaped like animal ears. Would you wear them with your everyday looks?

She’s got the whole world in her hands. Moschino is a fun brand with funky clothes and accessories. Travel enthusiasts or Earth lovers may want to consider this globe clutch as an eyecatching accessory.

Oversized charms. We have seen many brands create funky decorative items that can be attached to handbags to personalise their appearance, but we believe FENDI might have taken it too far with XXL dolls hanging from its bags. What do you think?

Jewellery vest. ETRO is known for its modern bohemian designs, and a piece of jewellery that you can wear over your top as a waistcoat is something you might expect from the creative team behind this Italian brand – thumbs up on weird but wearable.

Pendant watches. Louis Vuitton is proposing that we wear our watches around our necks for a change – a way of combining style with timekeeping.

SHAPE YOUR SILHOUETTE

It’s time to get your wardrobe into transition mode for the new season. If there is one clothing item that seems to do a good job, it is a flared midi skirt. It can be paired with summer tops or worn with tights to become a

The time to put away your summery sandals is just around the corner. Enter the new season with closed-toe shoes such as feminine slingbacks and mules – they are the best transitional footwear, before boot season. Even though it’s still warm outside until December in this part of the world, boots will enter the scene soon enough (yay!).

The cold season is the perfect time to dust off your leather items. From skirts to jackets, the fabric is a dominant material in winter. However, it can also be incorporated into transitional looks. High Performing Beauty

ELEMIS has been named as the Official Skincare Partner of Aston Martin, in a collaboration that unites two of Britain’s most recognisable luxury names. The partnership spans both Aston Martin and the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team, blending highperformance motoring with premium skincare expertise. The alliance introduces bespoke co-branded activations, exclusive product launches and tailored skincare experiences at top Aston Martin events and flagship locations worldwide. Guests can expect everything from pop-up spas and mobile treatments to curated collections designed to reflect both brands’ focus on innovation, precision and craftsmanship. Marking the partnership, ELEMIS Co-Founder and CEO Sean Harrington said: “At ELEMIS, we’ve always believed in delivering excellence through innovation, craftsmanship and care, values we share with Aston Martin. This partnership represents a powerful meeting of minds, marrying innovative skincare with high-performance cars. Together, we’re creating immersive, sensorial experiences that redefine modern luxury for a global audience.”

Bridal Kicks

At Bridal Week in Mumbai, Venetian luxury shoe house Rene Caovilla partnered with Indian designer Gaurav Gupta for his Quantum Entanglement bridal show. The collaboration resulted in seven exclusive, custom-designed shoes of Italian craftsmanship featuring traditional Indian textiles and embroidery. The collection features three of Rene Caovilla’s iconic styles reinterpreted for the occasion. The Chandelier sandal appears in three satin and Indian brocade variations in soft ivory and rosy-yellow shades, accented with crystal pendants. The Margot sandal is transformed into bold platform versions, one in red satin with a crystal-encrusted golden snake, while the other is electric blue satin with subtle crystal detailing. The Cleo pump completes the lineup in black and ivory Indian brocade with matching crystal embellishments. A marvellous fusion of heritage and artisanal skill, the collection will be available at Rene Caovilla and Gaurav Gupta boutiques, and online from January 2026.

Colour on the Court

Coco Gauff has debuted the latest New Balance x Miu Miu collaboration, wearing the collection during her recent tournaments in Rome, Berlin and Cincinnati. The American tennis champion brought her fashionable self to the court, stepping out in elegant, colourblocked ensembles designed with performance at their core. In Rome, she wore navy and white with flashes of red; Berlin saw a crisp mix of white and green accented with sky blue; while Cincinnati had white and royal blue with touches of red. Her on-court footwear included special editions of her signature Coco CG2, reimagined to strike a balance between athletic technology and her love of lifestyle silhouettes. Off court, she paired cobranded silk hoodies and track pants with new versions of the 530 SL sneaker in leather and mesh. The partnership has already made a mark, proving that high-performance sport can be just as fashion forward.

Island Beauty Inspires Couture

JOALI Maldives has partnered with Dubai-based designer Selma Benomar on a capsule collection inspired by the islands’ landscapes. Threads of Paradise spans 11 looks, each drawing on the colours and textures of the Maldives, right from kaftans to two-piece sets. Aqua Essence is inspired by the colours of the ocean with embroidery echoing coral, seaweed and coastal plants. Elegant Ocean focusses on streamlined silhouettes with light floral details. Tropical Paradise features prints and bolder shapes inspired by local flora, while Lavender Breeze showcases pastel skies with tailored cuts and orchid accents. Sandy Elegance combines neutral tones with fine guipure lacework referencing the texture of the beaches. The collaboration blends Selma’s bold and chic, heritage-led designs with JOALI’s emphasis on artistry, offering garments that tell a visual story of the Maldives. The collection is available at Maison De JOALI in the Maldives and Maison Selma Benomar in Dubai.

A Work of Art

LOEWE Perfumes has partnered with Spanish visual artist Ignasi Monreal to reinterpret its Home Scents collection through a series of original illustrations and short films. The collaboration focusses on five of the most distinctive candles in the line. These are each brought to life through the artist’s imaginative visual language. Smoke from the Beetroot candle twists into ribbons of the brand’s Anagram, while Ivy is engulfed in foliage. Oregano rests amid pools of solidified wax and Tomato is set against a fiery backdrop. Each piece blends symbolism, digital painting and classical art references to create immersive, nuanced imagery. Based between Madrid and Rome, Ignasi is known for surreal, photorealistic work that bridges fine art and fashion. This collaboration presents LOEWE Home Scents as more than fragrances, transforming them into experiences that are as visually poetic as they are olfactory.

Roses Eternalised into JEWELS

Jewellery is intrinsically related to emotions and Pasquale Bruni’s latest High Jewellery collection tells a heartfelt story.

Founded in Valenza, Italy, in 1968, Pasquale Bruni has crafted exceptional pieces of jewellery for women around the world. Each creation unites the nobility of metal and precious stones in a family-owned and managed workshop. The brand has always been synonymous with savoir-faire, style and creativity. Every project is entirely developed in its Italian atelier, a true hub of the soul where timeless elegance becomes a jewel. Each creation embodies the brand’s DNA, enhancing exclusive designs, unique pavé and precious gems.

During Haute Couture Week in Paris, the brand hosted an exclusive presentation to showcase its latest High Jewellery collection: Rosina. Rooted in Creative Director Eugenia Bruni’s personal journey, Rosina is a capsule that honours both heritage and rebirth. Inspired by the rediscovery of her aunt’s (namesake of the capsule) abandoned home, where nature had overtaken architecture, the collection imagines a world where vines, moss and florals grow freely, reclaiming space and telling stories of resilience. The jewels emerge not as adornments but as living, breathing extensions of nature’s grace and feminine strength. A tribute to all the women who leave an invisible yet profound mark on our lives.

“There is a place where nature remembers what we forget. Where beauty is not arranged, but revealed, gently, wildly, as if whispered by time itself,” says Eugenia Bruni.

During her visit to her aunt’s home, she spotted a solitary rose, suspended in dew. The flower became the vibrant protagonist in the collection. It blooms into a precious design, like a mandala – an anthem to the creations that promote balance between earth and sky. The petals are crafted with pavé diamonds: when worn and in motion, everything transforms into light. At the back of the central necklace, a heart of pink sapphires and rubies is treasured –a symbol of protection, evoking the stages of femininity: from girl to woman. Each jewel, from a ring to a necklace, an earring to a brooch, embraces the skin like a hug. On the back of each piece, a pattern of hearts and moons vibrates – symbols of the deep bond between the soul and the universe.

Just like every woman, the pieces have an evolving silhouette. The earrings transform from petals into moons, brooches become pendants and the necklace has two sides: one front-facing, telling the story of wonder and beauty, and the other at the back, revealing the powerful and untamed part of femininity’s identity.

SHOOTING STAR WATCH GETS A FLORAL UPDATE

Jaeger-LeCoultre introduces two new versions of the Rendez-Vous Shooting Star, complete with lacquered blooms and a celestial display.

In 2022, Jaeger-LeCoultre introduced a new watchmaking complication as part of its Rendez-Vous collection: the Shooting Star. Designed to emulate the randomness of meteor showers, it stood out for its poetic inspiration. In 2025, a new interpretation of the piece is introduced, featuring intricately hand-painted peonies on the dial, available in two limited editions of just 10 pieces each.

The Rendez-Vous Shooting Star uses the in-house automatic Calibre 734 movement and comprises 335 components, developed entirely by the brand. The complication allows a shooting star to sweep across the dial at random intervals, triggered by the movement of the wrist. This unpredictability is central to the story because, unlike regular astronomical events, shooting stars are fleeting and unscheduled, making their inclusion in horology a tough challenge.

The updated design places significant emphasis on artistry. The dial is made up of three layers, with the top disc formed from sapphire glass and hand-painted in Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Métiers Rare atelier. The process begins with freehand outlines, followed by foliage painted in reverse on the underside and finally, the flower petals on the top surface. Lacquer has been used in nine shades for pink peonies and 12 for blue peonies. Each

dial must be completed in a single uninterrupted session due to the fastdrying nature of the lacquer. The work is carried out in full protective gear to prevent contamination of the materials, as any foreign particles require the process to be restarted from scratch.

Beneath the floral motif sits a rotating disc of mother-of-pearl, airbrushed in various shades of blue to evoke a night sky. A laser-cut silhouette of a shooting star on one side of the disc enables light to pass through, revealing a third metallic layer beneath and creating the illusion of movement. A diamond-set arc on the sapphire glass dial traces the trajectory of the star. Both versions of the watch come in a 36mm, 18-carat pink gold case with water resistance up to 50 metres and a 70-hour power reserve. The pink peony model is paired with a fully diamond-set bracelet in pink gold with 625 brilliant-cut stones, totalling up to 6.31 carats approximately. The blue peony version is presented on a blue alligator leather strap, with 189 brilliant-cut diamonds set across the case and dial (around 1.47 carats in total).

Peonies were chosen as the floral motif for their symbolic association with femininity, abundance and prosperity. Combined with the celestial complication, the design brings together natural beauty and mechanical sophistication in a highly limited and technically complex format.

Jaeger-LeCoultre collections are available at Bahrain Jewellery Centre (BJC).

Givenchy expands its renowned fourshade concept with the launch of Prisme Libre Bronzer Powder and a new 4-Color Pressed Powder.

Four shades, one compact – that has been the defining idea behind Givenchy’s Prisme line since 1989, when it first launched Le Prisme. Inspired by the 4G logo, the original four-in-one powder introduced a new way of working with colour harmonies to sculpt and refine the complexion. Over time, the concept evolved into the wider Prisme Libre range, which includes the 4-Color Loose Powder, relaunched in 2024 with an updated formula.

Now, the line welcomes Prisme Libre Bronzer Powder, a compact featuring four bronzing and sculpting tones designed to deliver a natural sun-kissed effect while maintaining skin hydration. Its ultralight, micronised texture promises a barely-there feel, blurring and mattifying the complexion for up to 12 hours without build-up.

The bronzer can be applied in two ways: all four shades blended for a radiant, tanned finish, or individually to contour and highlight with more precision. Each compact offers a bronzing tone, a deeper contour shade, a warmer hue and a highlighter, making it both a bronzer and a sculpting palette. Available in three harmonies, it provides a customisable finish that can be built up gradually.

Presented in a new black lacquered compact, the design features the 4G logo embossed on the powders and includes a mirror and brush for ease of use. This launch introduces a new muse for the brand, model Karolina Spakowski, who appears in the campaign alongside another talent, Sculy Mejia.

With the bronzer, the maison is also releasing the Prisme Libre 4-Color Pressed Powder. This compact combines four shades to correct, mattify and brighten the complexion with medium coverage and a bare-skin sensation, available in six colour harmonies. Together, the two products form a new pairing within the Prisme Libre range.

NOTES OF A LOVE STORY

Diptyque introduces an eau de toilette and solid perfume to its Fleur de Peau collection.

Diptyque’s Fleur de Peau collection, already celebrated for its intimate eau de parfum and care products, has now grown to include an eau de toilette and a refillable solid perfume. The eau de toilette is offered in two sizes, while the solid perfume is designed for on-the-go application, allowing the scent to be delicately layered with the fingertips.

The fragrance draws inspiration from ancient Greece and the myth of Psyche and Eros. The story of their daughter, Hedone, underpins the perfume’s narrative, celebrating the meeting of softness and purity through the interaction of musks and flowers.

It is centred on a composition of white musks, enlivened by pink peppercorn notes and the sparkling freshness of mandarin. These top notes evoke the gentle intimacy of the mythical couple’s tender kiss, captured in sculpted forms. The musks are accompanied by the powdery elegance of iris and magnolia, while the deeper accents of ambrette seeds add warmth and complexity. As the perfume settles on the skin, its light and enveloping qualities are fully revealed, varying subtly with each wearer.

Fleur de Peau celebrates the meeting of softness and depth, where floral notes merge seamlessly with musks to create something both ethereal and grounded. The new eau de toilette and solid perfume offer more ways to explore this interplay, extending the range’s sensorial richness. The permanent collection includes the eau de parfum along with perfumed cleansing body gel, body lotion, hair mist and hand cream.

THE BEAUTY AGENDA

Autumn and Winter 2025’s make-up is moody, layered and a little rebellious. Bushra Hakim highlights the key runway inspirations.

Two Icons. One Night.

Tuna Edition 4.0 x Wagyu Heat

MOON KISSED

While summer has been about bronzed, sun-kissed complexions, winter leans to more cooler, ethereal radiance. Moonlight skin is all about a glow from within with a pearly, slightly frosted undertone. At Iris van Herpen, models walked with otherworldly complexions enhanced in luminous highlighters along the cheekbones and shimmery accents at the temples. The result was an almost celestial quality, skin that catches the light without looking heavy.

ESPRESSO EDIT

Brown is hardly new to beauty, but this time around it takes centre stage in what’s being dubbed ‘espresso make-up’. Inspired by the deep richness of coffee, this trend uses tonal shades of mocha and chocolate across lids, lips and cheeks. At Acne Studios, earthy browns defined the eyes in softly smudged liners and shadows, creating dimension without harshness. The effect is sultry yet wearable, the perfect everyday look that can be amped up for evenings with darker lips or intensified shadow.

SPIDER LASHES

Forget sleek, fanned-out mascara, this season’s lashes are clumped, bold and unapologetic, much like Twiggy in the ‘60s. Dubbed ‘spider lashes’, the look appeared at Chloé, where mascara was piled on deliberately to form clusters that felt retro yet modern. Thom Browne took the idea further with dramatic, almost theatrical, feather-like lashes that framed the eyes strikingly. It’s a daring move that turns mascara into a statement piece rather than just a finishing touch.

MOSCHINO
MARNI

SUBTLE LINES

Graphic liner took a backseat this season, replaced by ultra-thin, almost imperceptible strokes. At Dior, eyeliner was traced delicately along the inner corners and upper lash lines, adding just enough definition without overwhelming the face. Isabel Marant opted for faint flicks that enhanced the eyes subtly, while Genny went with a barely-there haze along the lower lash line. It’s clean, considered and a welcome shift from the overly bold liner of seasons past.

MIDAS TOUCH

Metallic touches gave make-up an unexpected sparkle this time. Instead of full-on shimmer, designers opted for refined flickers of gold on lids or brows. At Bibhu Mohapatra, models wore shimmering gold accents on the eyes that caught the light as they moved, while Kobi Halperin opted for flecks of metallic pigment placed delicately at the centre and inner corners. This is understated glamour at its finest – subtle, wearable, yet impactful enough to transform a pared-back look.

POLISHED GLOW

Seen time and time again is the renewed focus on healthy, natural-looking skin. Shows like Ferragamo and Stella McCartney championed dewy complexions with minimal base, focusing instead on skincare-prepped faces and subtle highlighting. The goal isn’t to conceal, but to enhance. Light foundations or tinted moisturisers, strategic highlighter, along with a finish that lets freckles, texture and personality shine through. It’s real skin, but polished.

FROM EXFOLIATION TO EASE

A salt scrub and a long, restorative massage at Heavenly Spa by Westin became Bushra Hakim’s gateway to fresh skin and a calmer mind this month.

September has always felt like a weird in-between month. Summer isn’t completely over, but you can feel the shift in the air with a lot more breeze and a sense of things slowing down. By this time, my skin usually tells its own story: too many hours in the sun, driving around with the AC blasting, travelling and generally not giving it the attention it deserves. It feels dry, tired, a little overworked, much like the rest of me, which is why the idea of a “full reset” at the Heavenly Spa by Westin at The Westin City Centre Bahrain sounded perfect.

As I stepped out of the elevator on the third floor, I was welcomed into the spa’s expansive reception. Bright and spacious, the room carried a serene energy, its white, green and blue tones complemented by the soothing sound of a fountain that divided the male and female areas. Here, you will find on display some of the best-selling products from top wellness and skincare brands like Pevonia and Elemis.

Kim, my therapist for the afternoon, welcomed me graciously and asked me to fill out the consultation form while she brought over a detox smoothie – a cool mix of green apple, cucumber and mint, along with a cold towel. I was cooling down from the inside out. Considering how humid it was outside, that towel might have been the most heavenly thing I’d felt all week.

I went there to try the September pampering package: The Full Reset. A treatment designed for a proper refresh for the body after a long summer. It combined a 30-minute body scrub with 90 minutes of the best-selling Aspire massage. Kim led me through to the women’s section, starting with the changing area, where my locker was fully stocked with every amenity you could possibly need, from combs and shower caps to vanity kits and plush towels. I changed into the fresh robe and slippers before being given a brief tour of the facilities. Guests can use the Jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and shower before or after treatments, which already makes it feel like an all-day experience if desired.

I was led into the treatment room where the bed was pre-warmed, layered with soft towels and felt like an invitation to just let go. Kim began by wiping my feet with warm towels and giving me a short dry massage, just enough to ease me into the ritual. She then dampened the skin with warm water before applying the lemon scrub from Elemis. Working in sections, she used circular motions to buff away dead cells, moving with a rhythm that was calming in itself. The scrub was surprisingly gentle and not like the harsh, scratchy kind that leaves your skin feeling raw. Instead, it felt nourishing, the oils in the formula leaving my skin smooth and hydrated rather than stripped. The lemon fragrance was light and refreshing, not overpowering and the entire process lasted about half an hour. Afterwards, I hopped into the shower conveniently inside the treatment room. I was instructed to rinse with only water, no soap, so the oils could continue working. When I walked back out, my skin already felt transformed – softer, cleaner and visibly brighter, particularly on my hands, which usually bear the brunt of the sun when I’m driving. The bed had been re-warmed for me, a thoughtful touch so I wouldn’t feel chilly post-shower. The part I’d been looking forward to the most started: the 90-minute Aspire massage. What I love about this treatment is that it’s tailored to your needs. You can choose the oil and the pressure. I went for mandarin oil, known for its relaxing properties. If I’m being honest, my back has been paying the price of bad posture and my shoulders usually feel like they’re carrying a backpack of bricks. I did not even have to tell which shoulder was worse, but the second Kim touched my back, she knew that the right one, of course, was my perpetual trouble spot. She began with my legs, using a pressure that was firm but never uncomfortable,

her thumbs and palms working together to smooth out tension. When she moved to my back and shoulders, some extra time was spent there, methodically loosening the knots I didn’t even realise had existed.

One of the highlights was the way she worked on the nape of my neck. It’s an area so often ignored, but I could feel the tension melting away under her expert touch. Towards the end, she asked if I’d like her to include a scalp massage. That was an easy yes. She alternated between massaging my forehead, temples and scalp. I found myself drifting off to sleep in the blissful half-dreamy state where you’re so relaxed you forget the world outside exists. The massage soon came to an end, which, to be fair, could have lasted the entire day and nobody would have heard me complain. The 90 minutes seemed to have disappeared in what felt like 20. Kim suggested that I take some time in the relaxation lounge, where ginger-honey tea and roasted nuts were available. I sat there unhurried, sipping slowly, before heading into the sauna for a short while as recommended.

By the time I left, I felt lighter, calmer and strangely energised and not in the hyper way coffee gives you, but in a grounded, steady way. My skin was glowing, my muscles no longer felt knotted, and I walked out with the sense that I’d pressed a reset button I didn’t even realise I needed. Energised enough, I joked to myself I could even take on a shop-a-thon at City Centre Bahrain afterwards.

TWIRL AUTUMN INTO

CH Carolina Herrera’s Evening Capsule for the new season features polka dots, ruffles and bold colours.

Eveningwear takes a dramatic turn as CH Carolina Herrera presents an Evening Capsule Collection for Autumn 2025, which is both glamorous and sophisticated – unique outfits for your upcoming posh events.

Polka dots take centre stage, featured on a long silk-blend fil coupé gown with a ruffled skirt that adds movement and volume, paired with the Scala clutch in the same print for a stylish touch.

Silk chiffon gowns in bright fuchsia and emerald green add lightness; their semi-transparent layers and puffed raglan sleeves are finished with double and triple ruffles for a dramatic effect. Carolina red makes its return in a full-length crêpe dress cut with a draped plunging neckline, a bow detail at the back and a jewelled fastening. Ruffled sleeves to the elbow bring softness to the relaxed silhouette.

Texture and tailoring come through in moiré and taffeta. A wrap coat dress in moiré is finished with rhinestone-embellished cufflinks, while taffeta shirt dresses highlight pleats and sheen. A tailored moiré blazer, with grosgrain-covered buttons, pairs seamlessly with the Lacito Insignia skirt, which flares with asymmetric draping.

Floral designs introduce another dimension. A brocade dress in vivid green is topped with an asymmetric ruffled neckline, while a chiné gown, crafted using artisanal pre-dyeing, is defined by a pleated waist, cape-like skirt, kimono sleeves and a jewel-buttoned collar. The capsule is completed by accessories. The Initials Insignia clutch makes its debut in luminous Haya leather, featuring a clasp that references the house’s anniversary bracelet. Other updates include the Tiny Doma in burgundy, the Lacito Insignia in bubble-gum pink, and the Scala Insignia clutch in satin polka dots.

When Dreams COME TRUE

This month, we chatted with Nouf Busubaia, Founder and Co-Owner of LaRocca Ristorante (among other roles), for a heartwarming insight into the worlds of hospitality and entrepreneurship.

OHLALA– You have a background in finance. What made you move into the restaurant world?

Nouf Busubaia – I started my career in the banking sector with Citibank, then moved to Mumtalakat. I loved the dynamics of taking a simple concept and transforming it into a real project – conducting feasibility studies, analysing markets and watching developments rise from the ground up. Later, I joined Bahrain Bayan School as Head of Finance and Projects under the leadership of Sh Dr May bint Sulaiman Al Otaibi, who believed in my potential. After completing my MBA at DePaul University, I realised my heart was pulling me toward creativity, design and experiences that bring people together. Life often moves at a stressful pace, and I wanted to create a hub where people could slow down and celebrate la bella vita – the beautiful life – through food, ambience and company. A trip to Italy cemented my vision: I could bring that same sense of beauty and connection to Bahrain. LaRocca was born from that dream –blending the financial discipline I had built over the years with my passion for hospitality, culture and storytelling.

OHLALA– LaRocca has a charming ambience and is located in a familyoriented neighbourhood. Can you tell us more about it and what your purpose and differential are?

Nouf – When we dreamt of LaRocca, location was essential. We wanted it to feel like a little hidden gem – far from the busy, crowded areas – much like walking through the narrow streets of Italy, turning a corner, and discovering a boutique family-run restaurant. We worked closely with our architect, GSA Architecture, to bring this dream to life. The interiors were kept simple and natural, featuring soft, earthy tones that created a cosy yet elegant setting. We insisted on details like white linen table service – a hallmark of Italian hospitality – paired with elevated silver service to bring refinement into a neighbourhood setting. It was unconventional at first, offering upscale dining in a family-oriented area, but as guests visited and experienced the concept, the dream began to make sense. LaRocca offers the sights, sounds and aromas of Italy while celebrating life’s simple pleasures. Our goal has always been to create an experience where guests can savour la bella vita.

OHLALA – Food and feelings are always interconnected. What is the biggest joy of creating and owning an eatery?

Nouf – The biggest joy comes when we see guests truly immersed in the experience – laughing over a shared platter, celebrating milestones or simply relaxing after a long day. Food has an incredible power to bring people together, turning ordinary evenings into lasting memories. At LaRocca, we feel especially proud when guests choose us to celebrate life’s most special moments. We’ve even created a tradition of giving them a handwritten postcard as a keepsake – something personal to remember the occasion by. We also take festive seasons seriously because they reflect our vision of la bella vita. Whether it’s Valentine’s Day, Ramadan, Eid, Christmas or New Year’s Eve, we love creating themed dinners and atmospheres that make guests feel like every visit is a celebration worth remembering.

OHLALA – People often say that owning a restaurant is extremely difficult but rewarding. What have you learned so far in these two years since the opening of LaRocca?

Nouf – I’ve learned that the restaurant industry demands both passion and resilience. It’s not just about offering great food and exceptional service – it’s about consistency, attention to detail and building a team that truly shares your vision. These past two years have taught me to adapt quickly, listen to our guests and continue innovating while staying true to our identity. It hasn’t been easy. Like raising a child, it requires time, dedication and patience. You can’t expect everything to happen at once – building a loyal team, gaining guests’ trust and creating a clear strategic plan all take time and persistence. But with each challenge came growth. After our first year, we opened LaRocca Pizzeria to showcase authentic wood-fired pizzas and handmade pastas. In our second year, we introduced Il Salone, our classical mocktail lounge that transports guests to an elegant, vintage Italian dream. For me, passion means continually building, evolving and adding new layers to the dream. The journey never really stops; it keeps growing with you.

OHLALA – You also work in the beauty field as CEO of Dr Ahmed Asfoor Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Clinic. How do you balance both careers? Is there any common ground in both positions?

Nouf – At first, balancing both careers seemed daunting, but I realised both fields share a common thread: creating experiences that improve people’s lives. At the clinic, it’s not only about beauty – it’s about confidence and well-being. Some patients come post-cancer, others need treatment after burns, some are children struggling with bullying because of how they look and others simply want to pamper themselves for their wedding. It’s about restoring confidence and helping people live a better, fuller life. At LaRocca, it’s about joy, connection and celebrating life’s moments. Both roles centre around bringing happiness and meaning to people’s lives in different ways. Time management, delegation and a clear vision are key. Both careers taught me the importance of building strong, passionate teams and leading with genuine care while staying committed to excellence.

OHLALA – Do you believe you are an entrepreneur at your core, no matter which field? What drives you to have a vision for businesses?

Nouf – For me, entrepreneurship is about seeing possibilities where others see limits. It’s about vision, courage and the willingness to create something

meaningful. Whether it’s in healthcare or hospitality, I’m driven by the idea of building experiences that make a difference. Places or services that people connect with on an emotional level. Entrepreneurship also means embracing risk, learning through challenges and having the resilience to keep going when things get tough. It’s about turning passion into purpose, surrounding yourself with the right people and continuously evolving to stay true to your vision while adapting to the world around you. For me, every project is a chance to create something lasting, something that people will remember not just for what it was, but for how it made them feel.

OHLALA– Do you have any dos and don’ts when it comes to starting a business? Do you have any tips to share?

Nouf – Start with a clear vision and be prepared to work hard to bring it to life. At times, you’ll find yourself doing many things on your own – and that’s okay. Stay true to your dream because you’re the only one who truly sees it. You’ll face opinions, doubts and even resistance, but you have to listen to your heart and trust your vision. Listen to your customers, they’ll guide you better than anyone. Don’t rush the process; building something lasting takes time. And don’t be afraid of failure – it often teaches you far more than success ever will. My biggest advice? Build a business around something you genuinely love, because passion is what keeps you going when things get tough. Dream big – dreams do come true, and when they do, don’t stop dreaming; live it, cherish it and keep it growing. And most importantly, surround yourself with people who believe in you, your family, your friends and those who encourage you when things get hard.

OHLALA– What do you think about Bahrain’s business scene? What, in your opinion, is necessary to thrive in it?

Nouf – Bahrain boasts a growing and vibrant business scene, particularly for entrepreneurs with fresh ideas. To thrive here, you need adaptability, creativity and a willingness to innovate. Networking and collaboration are also key – businesses succeed when they connect with the community and support one another. Above all, authenticity matters. People here value brands that stay true to their story, deliver consistency and care about their customers. I also believe in the importance of patience and long-term vision. Success doesn’t come overnight. It requires building trust, offering quality and creating experiences that resonate emotionally with people.

TRENDS THAT DEFINE AUTUMN AND WINTER

With the cold season just around the corner (for most northern hemisphere countries, for us in the Middle East, the weather will take some time to realise it needs to chill), brands are starting to switch to their new creations. Find out the styles that we are rooting for!

We have to say that by now, everyone is a bit done with summer in this part of the world. It will take some time for us to enjoy outdoor activities and gatherings, but we can start prepping for them by getting our wardrobes ready.

The autumn and winter trends are here, and we can’t wait to start wearing them.

As in every cold season, neutral shades return to the centre of the stage, with black, grey and brown (this one continuing to stand out) reigning supreme. However, some brands went with a pop of colour here and there for a bit of fun when the days get darker. A beloved clothing item was the skirt – we spotted it in many collections, with midi and pencil styles becoming the hot item to own. Long coats and capes are some of the favourite warmers and leather is everywhere, as expected. Other trends to embrace include checks, flowy elements, sets, an invasion of lace trims, jockey-inspired designs, deep purple and sequins all over – a bit of shine is what every girl needs to feel pretty.

On the accessories scene, despite the obvious boot choices, we are more interested in a styling trick that caught our attention, the ‘show-off your socks’. We are getting a green flag to wear our foot warmers sticking out of our winter footwear, isn’t that great? Slouchy and fluffy bags are the carriers of the season and the serious look is getting an upgrade with ties and brooches.

We saw many designers change houses, with Donatella Versace waving goodbye to an era of serving as Versace’s Creative Director – AW2025 was her last collection in the position. The overall vibe is about interesting designs and structures that strike a balance –innovative fashion that stays grounded.

We find new seasons exciting and a reason to rethink not only our style, but also to use the moment as an opportunity to explore more about ourselves. Fashion is a way of expressing our personalities without saying a word in the best way possible: by wearing outfits that we love.

CAPED CRUSADER

Long coats are always the best way to keep warm during winter. However, in this corner of the globe, they aren’t really needed and opting for something easy to throw over outfits is the key to a stylish yet warm look. Enter capes to solve this equation. They are warm enough and add an edgy element. Check out Carolina Herrera and Louis Vuitton’s collections.

RIDING STYLE

The equestrian universe is a passion in this part of the world, with horse riding a popular hobby amongst locals and expats, which might help this trend take off in the region. Style your riding gear into your looks, take inspiration from Brunello Cucinelli and Loro Piana for the perfect marriage between this sport and fashion.

TOWN AND COUNTRY CHIC

Checks and plaids are the core of this trend, reflecting the stylish sophistication found in the mansions on the outskirts of English or French cities. It combines countryside vibes with the metropolis in a blend that gives you good girl vibes with a bold attitude. Burberry and Zimmermann embrace the trend with a rural-chic approach.

GET SERIOUS

It is no novelty that tailoring often flirts with autumn and winter collections, sometimes appearing subtly and sometimes going full-on. This season, we noticed a widespread use of one accessory that is predominant in the men’s dress code: the tie. You can style it with a skirt, as seen at Brunello Cucinelli, or opt for a complete menswear look, as at Loro Piana

Dark tones of all shades in the colour wheel are a good match for winter outfits, but deep purple has shown its dominance. Painting dresses and suits in this hue exudes regality and sophistication – a smart way to elevate your style game. McQueen and TOM FORD bring out pure glamour with their grape-like looks.

INVOLVED IN LACE

When we think of cold days, heavy and warm fabrics come to mind, such as velvet and wool, but an unexpected textile has joined the club: lace. With its soft and delicate texture, it has been featured in many collections, playing as a secondary element in trims and details. We love Saint Laurent’s dramatic dresses and the black and white compositions.

SHOES + SOCKS

Young girls usually gravitate towards this kind of style, but this season, the concept seems to have conquered a more elegant touch. We loved boots with socks that popped out, covering the knees, as seen at Zimmermann and Louis Vuitton. However, Brunello Cucinelli and MARNI’s styling of pumps with long socks is also quite a look.

NEXT LEVEL SEQUINS

We don’t have to wait till party season to shine in sequins. Long dresses and suits are adorned with these shiny, diskshaped ornaments for a refreshing twist. You won’t go grocery shopping wearing them, but they can easily be your choice for a dinner or even a girls’ night out. We loved Celine and Rabanne’s take on the trend.

RABANNE

LET’S PENCIL IT

Skirts are having a moment this season and knee-length, fitted numbers known as pencil skirts are another design to be highlighted. Commonly associated with office wear, this piece has transcended cubicle walls and hit the streets. The feminine item can be spotted in casual wear and even paired with combat boots, as observed at the Hermès fashion show. Perfect for those seeking a timeless outfit.

FLUFFY CARRIER

Cold days are perfect for snuggling and your handbag will be the subject of it. Soft and fuzzy bags in an array of shades can be the eye-catching element for those days when you are not feeling like wearing fancy frocks but still want to stand out in the crowd. We’ve got our eyes on Fendi and Moschino styles.

PIN ON

Accessories are small details that can make a significant difference to a look. Extra-large brooches are in vogue this season as an element that upgrades boring looks. Inspired by nature, these decorative items are shaped like flowers and twigs and can be placed on lapels or serve as a 3D detail on tops. Carolina Herrera mastered the concept.

Press Pause for JOYFULNESS

Longing for a unique experience without leaving the island, Fernanda Langhammer and her family headed to Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain, for quality time and delectable food.

Sometimes all we need to feel refreshed is a little escape. And when I say little, I mean one night somewhere that makes you feel like you’re in a completely different place without boarding a plane. Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain creates this effect, adding a luxurious touch to the experience. The drive gives the sense of a short road trip, and the hotel is like entering a parallel world where all worries stay behind the imposing doors that lead into the lobby.

One of the hallmarks of the Raffles Hotels & Resorts brand is its exceptional butler service, available worldwide. The whole idea is to provide guests with a personalised and discreet service throughout their stay, acting like personal assistants. In Bahrain, this would be no different, and the assistance began before I even set foot on the property. Margaret, my butler for the stay, sent me a WhatsApp message asking me to share my live location during my drive to the hotel, so she could greet me and my family and make our check in as smooth as possible.

As we parked for valet service, there she was, with a large smile to welcome us. The doorman wears a traditional outfit and, when the intricate doors opened, we found a sanctuary of crisp, white walls detailed with arabesque patterns in a botanical environment featuring stunning green plants contrasting with black accents. Natural light streams through the ceiling and the place looks like a fairytale scene – quite magical – the right touch to put you in vacay mode.

A haven of luxury and relaxation, where you can immediately notice Raffles’ sophisticated hospitality, seemingly blending with Bahrain’s Arabian flair. We crossed this beautiful space and reached the other side, where a buggy was waiting to take us straight to our villa. The secret garden formed the backdrop to our drive and we made a pit stop near a lagoon to check on the family of flamingos that had taken up residence in the hotel grounds. With the Al Areen Wildlife Park right across the property’s walls, they certainly felt at home. Margaret told us that there is a team taking care of them, making sure they receive the necessary nutrients.

CHIC ABODE

The all-villa hotel offers 78 private pool villas, ranging from one to three bedrooms and one of them was ours for a day. When the door opened, a luxurious, secluded space appeared before our eyes. The pool was the first detail we all spotted – a large rectangular expanse of water that reaches the doors to the living area, bedroom and bathroom, meaning you can jump in from any of these rooms! The dark blue tiles add a touch of refinement to the finishing. Surrounding the pool were a big dining table, loungers and an outdoor cabana daybed.

On the right side, there is a closed lounging area with sofas, similar to a majlis, and a TV. On the left side, a closed dining space, where we had our in-villa breakfast the next morning.

We then headed to the main villa. A personalised card and chocolates were waiting for us, along with refreshing water in the mini bar and an in-room coffee machine and tea options. The living room is spacious and makes you feel at home with its subtle décor, books and a good-sized desk in case you need to work a bit (I did, and the desk came in very handy to have a proper place to put my laptop).

The bedroom had one of the most comfortable beds I’ve ever tried, like a cloud that enveloped us for a very relaxing night. Crisp white sheets, dark wood contrasting with pale beige tones, with elegant touches of gold complementing the ambience.

The bathroom features a massive tub, two sinks and a shower that provides access to the outdoors, complete with all the necessary amenities. I have to say the fluffy robes were a success.

We got into our swimsuits and stayed in the temperature-controlled pool until dinner – that’s what we call a good life.

DINING IN STYLE

We had dinner at Ycone Paris, Chef Yazid Ichemrahen’s signature restaurant that has a permanent location in a charming spot near the lobby. The chef is well-known for his sweet creations, such as the Black Forest cake in the shape of an apple. But we were there to try the savoury options. Divina was our attentive server. She promptly brought a refreshing drink called Passionella, a concoction made with passion fruit and mango. For the food, we ordered the Spaghetti Zucchini, cut into yellow and green strands that resemble spaghetti, accompanied by a hazelnut and praline sauce. We also had the Beef Tartare with Parmesan foam, Beef Tataki and the Cucumber Salad. The zucchini and beef tataki were our favourite dishes, thanks to their innovative yet straightforward flavours. If you are looking for something light with a twist, you’ll find it there and if you have a sweet tooth, Ycone Paris is definitely the place to go.

For breakfast, you can choose to eat at Palma restaurant or have it delivered to the comfort of your villa. We opted for the latter and arranged everything via message with Margaret. We opted for the in-villa option to enjoy a little more of our favourite feature: the pool.

Of all the meals we had, I must say that lunch was the ultimate experience. To our joy, Palma has a new chef and a new menu. Chef William Khala, who has worked in Japan for the past nine years, demonstrated his passion and care for the food he created very clearly. We had a pleasant chat prior to embarking on the culinary journey that he had carefully prepared for us. The starters were a delightful and refreshing Rocket & Date Salad (dates from the hotel’s garden) with pomegranate vinaigrette and goat cheese, as well as Prawn Crudo, which featured thin slices of raw prawn adorned with bottarga powder for a salty and rich kick, accompanied by velvety basil mayo. We also had the Black Angus Beef Carpaccio, complemented by aged pecorino and cacio and pepe cream, which absolutely melted in our mouths and the Grilled Asparagus, accompanied by béarnaise sauce and a touch of Dukkah (a traditional Egyptian blend of nuts, seeds and warm spices) on top, adding pleasant crunchiness and taste. What a brilliant start! Everything was super fresh and delicious.

The mains included two completely different pastas: the spectacular (and my favourite dish of the entire stay) Orecchiette di Gamberi, a delicate pasta in a glassy and creamy shrimp sauce, and Fagottelli, handmade parcels filled with tender beef short ribs that had a delicate texture yet deep flavours. The other two mains were the Black Cod, beautifully glazed (not too sweet or too salty, just perfectly balanced) with a touch of coriander foam that added a peppery and floral note, leaving a pleasant lingering taste, and an impressive Wagyu Beef T-Bone Steak. I am not a meat eater, but I was accompanied by two carnivores who said in unison that this was the best dish – a rare, tender, cooked to perfection piece of meat – any meat lover’s paradise.

Pastry Chef Romain Jeunet joined us for the final leg of the journey: the desserts. We tried three of his creations: Orange Blossom Crème Brûlée, Citrus and Basil Variation and Mille-Feuille. Wow! I am not a sweet enthusiast, but I have yet to find a place that serves desserts as stunning as Palma. The restaurant demonstrates that its savoury and sweet options have impeccable quality, showcasing its chefs’ incredible skills.

UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN

It was time to say goodbye, but we will take the good moments lived with us forever – it was indeed a memorable stay that we would love to repeat soon. Just like the check in, check out was done with no hassle. Margaret picked us up at our villa and dropped us off next to our car, simple as that. We went home with the feeling of having spent an incredible time, where the hustle and bustle from our busy day-to-day lives had no chance to show up – it was the perfect little getaway.

For a Well-deserved REST

A weekend at the Hilton Dubai Creek Hotel & Residences proved irresistible for Bushra Hakim, who soaked up luxurious spaces, indulged in treats and took in stunning skyline vistas.

It had been years since I last visited Dubai, which is ironic considering it’s practically next door. Life had me travelling around the world, but not the Middle East, and I missed the incredible transformation Dubai has undergone in recent years. The last time I was there, the skyline was impressive, yes, but now? It’s like the city has expanded quickly into endless stretches of luxury.

After a quick flight, I was breezing through customs and slipping into a chauffeured car. The drive to my home for the weekend – Hilton Dubai Creek Hotel & Residences – was delightfully short, thanks to its enviable location in the Jewel of the Creek development. This sleek, waterside enclave is home to some of the most luxurious residences in the city, and the Hilton fits in perfectly among them.

THE RESIDENCE

Walking into the lobby, the first thing that hit me was colour: a bold sweep of pink and rose-gold that runs through the entire property. This isn’t the timid pastel you see in a boutique café; this is glossy, glamorous and unapologetically chic. A wall of windows frames the marina outside, where the hotel even offers berthing facilities for guests arriving by yacht. The marble backdrop, yes, pink marble, catches the afternoon light, giving the whole space a soft, golden glow. I was welcomed with the traditional warmth of Arabic coffee (Qahwa) and plump dates, before John, at reception, swiftly handled check in, sharing all the need-to-knows from breakfast hours to concierge services and a quick overview of the hotel’s amenities. Soon after receiving my key cards, I made my way up.

My one-bedroom apartment was huge, nearly 100sq/m, airy, modern and bathed in natural light from floor-to-ceiling windows framing Dubai Creek and, in the distance, the spire of the Burj Khalifa. The pink theme continued in subtle accents, tying the interiors together. A fully equipped kitchen, complete with a stove, oven and a lifesaving coffee machine, sat ready for longer stays. Even laundry was considered, with a washing machine and detergent pods available on request. The living area held a dining table, TV and a welcome spread from the hotel’s Hi-Bye Café: delicate pastries, glossy bonbons and a tray of exotic fruits that were thoughtful touches setting the tone for my stay. Inside the bedroom, the king-size bed was just the right blend of cloud-soft and supportive, with pillows that hit that elusive perfect fluff level and a TV to watch to extend my bedtime. My favourite feature, though, was the powder room. It connected both bedroom and living room with jack-andjill doors and housed a deep soaking tub, a rainforest-style shower with built-in speakers and every amenity I could possibly need. Not once did I have to call for an extra.

ALL-DAY DINING

Hilton spoils you for choice when it comes to culinary adventures. Serein Restaurant, the main all-day dining space, was where I took most of my meals. Breakfasts were a daily highlight as I sacrificed precious sleep for pancakes one morning, shakshouka the next, then dosa, croissants and pain au chocolat, all perfectly executed and fuelling my day. Lunch there was a global buffet of options, perfect for the hotel’s international clientele. My highlights included a tangy, spicy arrabbiata pasta that hit all the comfort-food notes and the Hilton Platter: a feast of fries, chicken popcorn, cheese spring rolls and onion rings – moreish and best enjoyed with a cold drink on a hot day.

I struck lucky by being in town for the Saturday Brunch. It was an exciting spread of cheese boards, salads and various appetisers alongside sizzling steaks, crispy dosas and the very umami nasi goreng. The steak and eggs were my personal triumph of medium perfection, with sides of grilled cherry tomatoes and crispy potatoes. I also sampled the pancakes and Red Velvet Oats, which weren’t just a sweet craving but also incredibly light on the tummy. Seafood fans can enjoy dishes like the Salmon Poke Bowl or Shrimp Aglio Olio and dessert lovers (like me) can’t skip the Viennoiserie selection. For something more relaxed, there’s Serein Pool Lounge, with quick bites and sunbeds, and the Hookah Place, a dark, intimate spot where I had dinner on one of the nights. I skipped the hookah but happily tucked into a crunchy Chicken Caesar Salad and then moved on to a Marinated Chicken Pita filled with grilled chicken, cucumbers and tomatoes, all tied together with a tangy and garlicky sauce. I couldn’t resist ending with a matcha latte, served with a chocolate shaped like a capybara, so adorable I almost felt bad eating it.

SPA AND RECREATION

The first floor is home to the well-equipped fitness centre, pool and my personal favourite – the Wellbeings Holistic Healing Spa. Even the air felt different, scented faintly to evoke all your senses. I was welcomed with a warm cup of calming herbal tea and invited to complete my consultation form while discussing treatment options with the therapist. The menu was expansive, featuring both familiar and rare therapies. I opted for a Balinese massage with lemon essential oil, which is ideal for relieving muscle tension without being overly intense.

My therapist, Daisy, suggested I start with the sauna and steam room to open my pores and relax my muscles. The Jacuzzi, booked in advance for privacy, was a thoughtful touch that made the experience feel truly exclusive. There, I spent about an hour relaxing both my mind and my muscles, after which the experience followed. The massage itself was a masterclass in skill and intuition. Daisy worked in fluid, unhurried motions, easing knots and lingering where I needed it most, whilst also applying acupressure to troubled areas. The signature Balinese stretches gently coaxed my joints into release, while the citrus-infused oil added an extra touch of easing. By the time she finished, I felt taller, lighter and oddly, as if my skin was glowing from the inside out. I was given some time to relax in the dark room before I changed and had my last cup of some more herbal tea.

OUT AND ABOUT

While the hotel could easily have kept me cocooned all weekend, I ventured out. To reconnect with the city’s traditional side, I visited the Gold Souq, its displays of intricate jewellery glinting under bright lights and its labyrinthine alleyways taking me from one speciality souq to another. Deira City Centre was a hop, skip and a jump away and tested my shopping stamina while Dubai Mall and the glittering Downtown reminded me why this city is such a global draw. The Dubai Frame offered a striking view of old and new, its towering golden structure framing the skyline like a work of art. The only regret? Visiting during summer meant missing out on the city’s lush gardens and open-air attractions, many of which were closed due to the heat.

All too soon, it was time to leave. The warmth of the staff, the comfort of the apartment and the ease of being so close to everything made the weekend feel both restful and full. I left with the quiet certainty that I’d be back, next time with family and hopefully in the cooler months, to enjoy everything the Hilton Dubai Creek Hotel & Residences and its neighbourhood have to offer.

A FRENCH EPICUREAN EXPERIENCE IN THE HEART OF BAHRAIN

Understated luxury coupled with culinary excellence were on the menu when Liz O’Reilly visited La Table Krug, at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain.

With only four outlets worldwide, La Table Krug is a collaboration between superlative chefs and venues and the premium French bubbly brand. So, an invitation to experience its latest menu is always cause for celebration. We arrived in the early evening and, though the restaurant has only recently reopened after the summer break, I was delighted to see that little has changed. With just 16 seats, the space is intimate, giving the feel of entering the home of European aristocracy. Starched white linens glowed softly under crystal chandeliers while heavy golden-bronze flatware and exquisite Bernardaud Limoges porcelain tableware gave a sense of understated luxury.

Wood panelled walls, marble flooring and fresh flower displays added to the air of subtle elegance and Joseph Krug, founder of the famed French beverage house, still looked down sternly from the wall, as if exhorting us to take our culinary experience seriously – we were only too keen to obey.

La Table Krug offers a limited menu of three appetisers, three mains and two desserts alongside a caviar service – various portions of Kaspian Caviar served with sour cream, chives, chopped egg, blinis and potatoes. The caviar was certainly tempting but we were there to check out the menu and quickly placed our orders.

First to arrive at the table was a generous breadbasket featuring fresh sourdough rolls and slices with the earthy taste of cumin accompanied by the most amazing yoghurt butter with dill powder in rosemary oil. The butter was a light and creamy dream, the subtle hint of the aromatic herb drawing me back time and again.

We were treated to two amuse bouches, each encased in cuplets of crispy phyllo. Tuna tartare was topped with a smooth creamy ring of avocado and caviar for a delightful taste and texture combination. But it was the pairing of light and creamy homemade ricotta with edamame and chopped chives that really excited my palate. The cheese was so airy as to be almost mousse-like, its delicate sweetness perfectly offset by the earthy, crunchy beans.

For her appetiser, my dining companion chose the White Tomato Mousse, a combination of Heirloom tomatoes, produced in partnership with a local farm, and white tomato mousse with zucchini, cucumber, olive tapenade and pickle. The mousse was beautifully delicate, the light, summery scent of the vegetables exciting the taste buds and the almost fluid mousse drawing subtle flavour from the olives and pickle. I opted for the Scallops Carpaccio – a dish I had spotted on the menu earlier and had been greedily anticipating. The tender flesh of the scallops was lightly briny and slightly sweet, the perfect foil to a topping of saltily popping pearls of trout roe and rich Kaspian caviar. A scattering of peppery baby rocket delightfully offset a yuzu ponzu vinaigrette on a light curd base for a thoroughly satisfying bite.

The 9+ Beef Striploin was the dish my friend had been waiting for. A cut of Westholme Australian Wagyu, fall-off-the-fork tender and fragrantly earthy in flavour served with succulent braised beef cheek in a crunchy rissole accompanied by root vegetables and mashed potato with onion oil topped with crispy fried onions. A deeply luscious truffle gravy, the juices of the meat complementing the richness of the fungi, brought all the elements together in such perfect harmony that our table, momentarily, fell silent.

I was in the mood for oceanic flavours and went for the Black Cod Filet with Kristal caviar, cauliflower and broccolini. The fish was firm and flaky with a rich buttery flavour made all the better by the accompaniment of a white miso and lime foam, poured dramatically at the table by Chef de Cuisine Alexis Knecht. The foam totally elevated the dish both visually and in terms of flavour, imparting a wonderfully satisfying citrus tang that complemented the fish without overpowering.

It was time for sweets and, although replete, we, of course, tried the desserts in the interests of research.

The iced coconut was a theatrical production with a half shell filled with coconut ice cream – very rich and obviously homemade – covering a sweet surprise of multiple chopped fruits including pineapple, passion fruit and mango topped with sweet, slightly chewy tapioca pearls. Served in dry ice, this is definitely one for the Gram, but our photographic colleagues had to hurry as it didn’t last long!

And the Bahraini Lemon was a fluffy, sweet baba topped with citrus gel and compote and a slightly tart yoghurt ice cream which contrasted beautifully with the rich, complex sweet and sour notes of aged balsamic Venturini Baldini – a surprising combination in a marriage of flavours that worked perfectly.

To finish, we tucked into a special little sweet treat from the chef in the shape of fudgy, chewy chocolate rounds and rich, sweet dulce de leche in another of those crispy cups. The perfect end to an exceptional gastronomic adventure.

La Table Krug provided a taste of French cuisine in the heart of Manama. If you haven’t been yet, you’re missing out.

GRACE ON THE GO

OHLALA TEST DROVE THE NEW AUDI Q8 55 TFSI S LINE AND DISCOVERED ELEGANCE WITH AN ENGINE.

It’s not every day that you get to spend time in a vehicle that oozes sophistication, power and poise like it’s walking the red carpet. But this month, OHLALA got to do exactly that.

From the moment we engaged with Audi’s new flagship SUV – the new Q8 55 TFSI, we were impressed by every aspect of this suave and spirited S line stunner, enriched by a tasteful selection of optional enhancements.

BOLD BY DESIGN

Sculpted to belong on a runway, our test drive model was painted in Sakhir Gold Metallic – a shade that’s subtle at dusk and striking under the Arabian sun.

One of the first things we noticed about the Q8 was its presence. This SUV doesn’t whisper premium – it announces it. Boldly. With grace. It’s the automotive equivalent of a designer kaftan: luxe, flowy and unapologetically chic.

The Singleframe grille takes centre stage, decked out in high-gloss black as part of the Black Styling Package. Add the S line’s aggressive bumpers, sleek roof spoiler and those imposing 22-inch Audi Sport 5-V-spoke wheels and you’ve got an SUV that knows how to command attention. Whether it’s cruising down the corniche or valet-posing outside your favourite brunch spot, it’s sure to turn heads.

Lighting is another theatrical flourish. The HD Matrix LED headlights with Audi laser light are functional and fabulous. Paired with digital OLED rear lights that adapt and even respond to nearby vehicles, the Q8 isn’t just aware of its surroundings; it interacts with them.

CABIN COUTURE

Sliding inside the cabin felt like entering an upmarket private lounge, only this one came with Valcona leather sport seats, intricate diamond stitching and the unmistakable S line embossing. We adored the dash, adorned in Gray Oak trim that struck a perfect balance between understated elegance and refreshingly uncluttered design.

The sense of space was immediately impressive, with generous headroom, wide, comfortable seating and a panoramic sunroof that bathed the interior in soft natural light. Audi has even included electric sunshades in the rear – a discreet yet thoughtful nod to passengers in the back, who, naturally, deserve the same VIP treatment. When day turned to night, a gentle cascade of ambient lighting took over, making the transition into evening driving feel effortlessly refined.

Our model also featured Dinamica microfibre headlining and sleek black finishes, enhancing the overall sense of quiet luxury.

“The Audi Q8 55 TFSI S line is more than just a premium SUV – it’s a statement.”

TECH WITH TASTE

If you’re tech-obsessed – or simply someone who enjoys not fumbling around with buttons – Audi’s MMI Navigation Plus with dual touchscreens makes every interaction feel smooth and satisfying.

We managed to sync our devices in seconds with Audi Smartphone Interface, accessed navigation with zero fuss and cranked up the volume on the Bang & Olufsen 3D Premium Sound System, which made our playlist sound like a private concert in a velvet-lined theatre.

There’s also the Audi phone box light for wireless charging and signal boosting, keeping your phone effortlessly powered and perfectly connected, no cords or clutter in sight.

PRECISION IN MOTION

Now, let’s get to the juicy bit. The 3.0-litre V6 turbocharged petrol engine delivers 340hp and 500Nm of torque with silky finesse, achieving an effortless 0-100km/h time of 5.6 seconds. That’s more than enough to overtake with elegance, join a fast-flowing highway without drama or just to feel a little smug when the light turns green.

The quattro all-wheel drive system, paired with adaptive air suspension sport, creates a drive that is plush yet poised. Whether we were skimming across pristine highways or navigating a gravel driveway to a desert villa, the Q8 kept its composure.

We also loved the mild hybrid system. It lets the car coast with the engine off, saves fuel and restarts so smoothly, we hardly noticed – a quiet genius behind the scenes.

SMART SAFETY SYSTEMS

We all like to think we’re excellent drivers – but it’s nice to have backup. The Q8 is equipped with a full suite of safety and assistance features that act like a team of invisible copilots.

From lane departure warning, lane change assist and rear cross-traffic alert to Audi pre sense front and rear, it watches your back (and your sides and your front) like a very stylish guardian angel. There are ISOFIX points in the rear for the little ones and power latching doors for the times you’re juggling shopping bags and a toddler.

Add cruise control with speed limiter and airbags all round and you’ve got a cocoon of confidence wherever you go. There’s even an exit warning – a subtle alert to prevent you or your passengers from opening the door into oncoming traffic.

ALL THINGS CONSIDERED

The Audi Q8 55 TFSI S line is more than just a premium SUV – it’s a statement. It tells the world that you know quality, you appreciate performance and you’re not afraid to stand out (in the classiest way possible).

WHAT'S TRENDING

Catch up on this month’s biggest, boldest and most unexpected trends with Miss Ohlala.

Selena Gomez clearly wasn’t kidding when she said makeup should be fun. Rare Beauty has teamed up with Tajín, yes, the Mexican seasoning, for a limited-edition blush and gloss duo. The Chamoy cheeks and Clásico lips combo, both gimmicky and genius, has already gone viral. Bonus points: proceeds benefit both the Rare Impact Fund and Tajín’s National School of Ceramics in Mexico.

La Beauté Louis Vuitton (LV) has arrived in the market. With lipsticks at USD160 and eyeshadow palettes at USD250, it is two to four times pricier than other designer make-up lines. The timing? Odd, given LV’s revenue dip. Even Lindsay Lohan chimed in on Instagram, calling it “too much”. If a celebrity with millions in net worth thinks it’s excessive, then who exactly is it for?

Forget getting excited over a full minibar. The Ritz-Carlton, Los Angeles is upgrading in-room pampering with its first-ever Beauty Fridge. Stocked with USD142 worth of cleansers, serums, cryotherapy globes and eye masks, the products even come with an option to take them home. Guests can also customise their fridge via a pre-arrival consultation, because why pack your routine when your suite has it all?

LOEWE is peeling into sustainability with its latest T-shirts made from orange peel fibres. Utilising innovative tech from Pyratex and Orange Fiber, citrus waste is transformed into lightweight, antibacterial and UV-protective fabrics. Resulting in chic, wearable pieces that turn food scraps into fashion statements. Only LOEWE could give leftover oranges a second life: noble, stylish and unmistakably Spanish.
