A Season Of Firsts
Summer is here and the time could not be better to get out on the water. In this issue, we showcase two new vessels that made their debut at the Venice Boat Show as part of the lineup from Ferretti Group. Ferretti Yachts 940 is the first widebody in its range boasting versatile accommodation and impressive speed, while the Pershing GTX70 is part of the Sports Utility Yachts range, offering a more compact format.
Our motoring pages this issue are very definitely aimed at the collecting connoisseur, with a preview of the stunning new Rolls-Royce Black Badge Spectre and a spin behind the wheel of the Porsche Panamera Manufacturer Edition – both vehicles that exceed every driver’s expectations.
Our travel writers have also been on the road this issue with visits to iconic properties in the Maldives, Budapest and Malaga, where we discovered there’s much more to the Spanish destination than golf – though there’s certainly plenty of that, too.
And our dining pages feature tastes of what’s best around the region from Doha to Bahrain.
In fashion, we showcase the sleek lines and graphic styling of Tom Ford’s latest offering and a collection from Peserico that’s inspired by Italian motor racing icon Tazio Nuvolari. While H Collection brings you the latest in accessories and quirky knick-knacks for the man who has it all and our Horology pages offer up new treats from Versace and Oris. We hope you enjoy this cool Summer issue and would love to hear your thoughts.

SUMMER AT VILEBREQUIN LA PLAGE
A splash of St. Tropez, in the heart of Doha
Blending French art de vivre with world-class hospitality, Vilebrequin La Plage at The St. Regis Doha offers guests a unique immersion into the colors, flavors, and effortless elegance of the Côte d’Azur.
OPEN DAILY 6:00 AM - SUNSET
BRINGING THE LUXURY WORLD TO RAS AL KHAIMAH

Ras Al Khaimah, UAE, will welcome high-end design giants, such as Dolce&Gabbana, Trussardi and more, as part of the world’s first multi-branded waterfront community.
Mira Coral Bay, to be developed across the picturesque shores of Al Mairid, was announced at a grand unveiling hosted by Mira Developments, which brought together guests such as Fabrizio Cardinali, CEO of ETRO, and Andrea Gentilini, CEO of Luxury Living Group. The development will include 14 branded residential projects, five-star hotels and worldclass dining options within the 220,000sq/m Mira Coral Bay master plan by Marco Casamonti & Partners / Archea Associati. Partner brands were announced as Dolce&Gabbana Casa, Bentley Home, Etro Home, Jacob & Co., John Richmond and Trussardi, marking a pivotal moment in luxury real estate, setting new standards for waterfront living. The evening also introduced a completely new branded concept: Kadar Villas. This project is the result of a collaboration between a world-renowned architect and a leading global branding agency. Each villa will come with two special edition luxury cars from a prestigious automotive brand, bespoke interiors personally curated by a legendary interior designer and custom household appliances from top-tier
luxury names.
Tamara Getigezheva, Co-Founder of Mira Developments, told the launch audience: “Mira Coral Bay is not just another project, it’s an answer to the ‘what-if’ question. What if the world’s best brands came together in one place? What if you were surrounded by luxury at every step? And today, we are opening the next chapter, where the ‘what if’ becomes a reality. And when we say luxury – we mean it. You’re not just buying property. You’re stepping into a fully curated life. The furniture? The kind most people wait months for. The tech? So smart, it almost knows what you need before you do. The ceilings? Tall enough to hold even your greatest ideas. And the view? The sea isn’t outside – it’s part of your interior.”

THE FUTURE IS HERE AN AR DESIGNER VISION

has debuted the first augmented reality (AR) experiences developed for its AR glasses, Spectacles, by the houses of
Christian Dior Couture
The design house, alongside Snap and creative studio Playar, has created the Lucky Collection a unique activation blending craftsmanship, astrology and AR. Available exclusively on Spectacles, the experience allows users to select a card linked to astrological signs, which is then fragmented into four shards. Guided by the house’s iconic bee, the pieces are virtually sewn back together, weaving a link between tradition and modernity, before the card comes to life, revealing the full symbolism of the selected astrological sign.
Louis Vuitton
Louis Vuitton, for its part, celebrates the reissue of its iconic fragrance Sun Song, with an AR experience evoking the brand’s universe and the journey of ingredients. Created by Master Perfumer Jacques Cavallier Belletrud, the scent blends orange blossom, neroli,
petitgrain, lemon and musks for a true scent melody emblematic of summer.
This iconic fragrance is at the heart of a new Spectacles experience developed in collaboration with creative studio Busterwood. Spectacles lets you and your friends interact together with the fragrance's key ingredients, explore its vibrant visual universe and bring Louis Vuitton's symbols to life in 3D.
In a shared vision of innovation and creativity, this collaboration marks a first in the world of luxury: Christian Dior Couture and Louis Vuitton are the first maisons to design experiences exclusively for Spectacles.

WORLD PREMIERES IN VENICE
The group showcased a total of seven marine masterpieces at the Italian expo, led by the world premieres of Ferretti Yachts 940, launched at the Cattolica shipyard in January, and the Pershing GTX70.
Ferretti Yachts 940
With an overall length of 28.97m and a maximum beam of 6.78m, this first widebody yacht in the range stands out for the five-cabin layout – with the master cabin positioned on the main deck –which allows for versatile exterior spaces and incredible overwater views through floor-toceiling glazed surfaces. Exterior styling is by Filippo Salvetti and the interiors are by design firm Ideaeitalia.
Starting from the stern on the main deck, the cockpit is furnished with freestanding furniture promising versatility of use. The glass parapet, also a feature of Ferretti Yachts 1000, establishes continuity with the stern platform, creating the perfect area for sharing experiences with guests.
The almost 30sq/m salon, entered through large sliding glass doors, is decorated on this unit in the brand’s Classic mood, which taps into warm, earthy elements and is designed to bring the owner the pleasure of an elegant, inviting and uncluttered environment.
The area contains a large living space, with an L-shaped sofa facing a storage unit and a sliding TV, plus a centrally positioned dining table seating eight. The hallway forward of the galley leads to the new Raised Pilot House, featuring a single-piece windscreen with no central pillar for better visibility.
The main deck is also home to the full-beam owner’s suite, which takes full advantage of the widebody hull concept and, on this unit, features the use of prized Silver Roots marble (for the desktop on the starboard side, on the forward wall behind the sofa, and in the bathroom); the full-beam bathroom is in the bow.
The extensive glazing is a striking new feature, including a floor-to-ceiling window in the dining area that floods the space with natural light, thanks in part to an external parapet designed so that it doesn’t obstruct the view. In this first unit, the floor-to-ceiling glazing features a sliding door to provide direct access to the starboard side walkway.
The outdoor area forward contains a large sunpad, a generous C-shaped sofa and a table. The wide walkways provide easy access to the mooring area.
The more than generously sized flybridge is the perfect place to share al fresco lunches and dinners while revelling in the beauty of the marine environment.
The guest area on the lower deck provides a total of three VIP cabins and one guest cabin with sliding beds.
The vessel can reach a top speed of 25 knots and a cruising speed of 21 knots (preliminary data).
Pershing GTX70
The third model in the Sport Utility Yachts range – which marks the beginning of Pershing's 40th anniversary – delivers the sporty spirit and incredibly liveable spaces of

the previous models, but in a more compact format, with a length of 21.88m and a beam of 5.42m, that promises a sensational new onboard experience.
The exterior design, in classic Pershing grey, reprises some of the stand-out style features seen on all GTX models. The slightly convex, stanchion-free sheer line runs from bow to stern, joining up with the bulwarks on either side of the cockpit, which open out to form two terraces that significantly increase the living space in the beach area. The sleek, sweeping lines, combined with the near vertical bow, endow this model with an unrivalled elegance.
The main deck has a seamless, open design. The cockpit, which is fully shaded by the sportfly, contains a generous C-shaped sofa and a table. Exterior and interior lounge areas are connected via the galley and the importance of the widebody structure is clear in the layout of the living space, which contains two facing L-shaped sofas.
The lower deck contains three cabins and three en suite bathrooms, in a layout that optimises the spaces so that guests can enjoy maximum comfort in the sleeping area too.

THIS SUMMER, LET LUXURY COME TO YOU
Indulge in a staycation where elegance, comfort, and refinement meet

THE ALTER EGO,
AMPLIFIED
A New Electric Motoring Icon

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars recently unveiled the most powerful car in the marque's history Black Badge Spectre, 'made for clients who fearlessly reject convention'.
The Black Badge versions of the manufacturer's main models provide the highest available performance specifications - leading horsepower and torque figures, as well as superior handling - along with the unmistakable Black Badge styling that brings a darker edge to these already outstanding icons.
Boasting bold exterior finishes, vivid interior details and innovative opportunities for Bespoke, Black Badge Spectre can also summon 1,075Nm, with a record 659hp making it the most powerful Rolls-Royce in history.
The decision to craft such a potent car was driven by the extraordinary expectations of the marque’s Black Badge clients, a group of whom allowed engineers access to their anonymised driving data, enabling analysis of their driving behaviour across hundreds of thousands of collective miles. This showed clients exploited maximum power in short pulses more than over extended periods.
Driving Force
The concept of power bursts required two powertrain innovations utilising functions that are new to Rolly-Royce Motor Cars but were previously seen in aircraft powered by the

legendary Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, including the Supermarine Spitfire.
The first is the unique Infinity Mode, a tribute to the Infinity symbol used to signify a Black Badge Rolls-Royce. Unlocked by pressing the Infinity ∞ button on the steering wheel, the full 659hp of power is made available, providing a more direct throttle response. Once activated, the dials become more vibrant to match the change in the car’s character.
The new model also features Spirited Mode, which allows a burst of intense, instantaneous acceleration. When the car is stationary, the driver engages this function by fully depressing the brake and throttle at the same time, waiting for a haptic and visual response signalling the car is ready, before fully releasing the brake. This raises the torque output to a landmark 1075Nm, unleashing a surge of force that speeds the car from zero to almost 100km/h in just 4.1 seconds.
Specialist Chassis
Several changes have been introduced to give drivers confidence when wielding the unprecedented power of Black Badge Spectre. Steering weight is increased and roll stabilisation adjusted for greater feedback from steering inputs and reduced body-roll during cornering. Enhanced dampers also increase body control, reducing ‘squatting’ under acceleration or deceleration. These upgrades balance an enhanced sense of engagement with the effortless operation and fêted 'Magic Carpet Ride' of Rolls-Royce vehicles.
A Dark Beauty
Black Badge Spectre debuts in a new Vapour Violet paint finish, a deep black-violet inspired

by the neon ambience of 1980s' and '90s' club culture – familiar to many clients. A painted Iced Black bonnet creates a bold contrast that can be paired with the marque’s palette of 44,000 ‘prêt-à-porter’ colours. Or there's the option for owners to develop a Bespoke hue reserved for their exclusive use, in collaboration with Rolls-Royce Bespoke designers. Alongside the regular shoulder and fender coachline options, clients can commission a ‘waft’ coachline, accentuating a crisp design line on the lower third of the body.
The model also introduces a bold new 23-inch, five-spoke forged aluminium wheel design available in a part-polished or all-black finish. Highlighting the increasingly broad geography of Black Badge clients, winter tyres are available for the new wheelset from launch.
As with all Black Badge models before it, Black Badge Spectre’s mirror-polished brightwork is presented in a signature dark finish, signalling its subversive, noire character. This includes the marque’s hallmark Pantheon Grille surround, Spirit of Ecstasy and the double ‘R’ Badge of Honour, as well as the door handles, expansive side window surround and bumper accents.
Lighting the Darkness
Rolls-Royce has developed a unique feature that enhances and intensifies Black Badge Spectre’s Illuminated Grille. A new backplate is offered in Tailored Purple, Charles Blue, Chartreuse, Forge Yellow and Turchese, allowing clients to extend their chosen colour onto this new canvas or create a unique accent to complement a coachline or the interior. This vibrantly coloured illumination can extend into the interior with newly developed Illuminated Black Badge Treadplates, available in 10 complementary colours.
The Inner Sanctuary
The rebellious character of Black Badge Spectre is obvious from the minute you open the doors. The interior features a unique pattern on the Illuminated Fascia, which is an abstract expression of the Spirit of Ecstasy and now incorporates the Infinity symbol used across the wider Black Badge family. The fascia comprises more than 5,500 ‘stars’ of varying proportions and intensity, set in a Piano Black ‘sky’. Framing this advanced craft feature is a richly complex Technical Fibre surface finish. This diamond-shaped weave uses carbon and fine metal thread on top of a black Bolivar wood base. The thread is laid by hand in a diamond pattern between layers of carbon fibre, creating a three-dimensional effect. Once cured, each interior piece is sandblasted, sealed with six layers of lacquer and hand-polished to a flawless finish, adding striking depth and clarity. The Black Badge Infinity symbol is also stitched into the leather ‘Waterfall’ section, which separates the rear seats. The instrument dials can be curated with a choice of five colour themes: Vivid Grellow, Neon Nights, Cyan Fire, Ultraviolet and Synth Wave, allowing clients to harmonise the physical and digital surfaces via the SPIRIT operating system. This digital architecture of luxury also grants access to remote charging and location information and the marque’s exclusive digital members' club, Whispers.

PERFORMANCE MEETS PRESTIGE
Hadag spent a day in the Porsche Panamera Manufacturer Edition, a luxury saloon that proved greatness really is in the details.
They say you can’t have it all. Clearly, “they” haven’t driven the 2025 Porsche Panamera Manufacturer Edition. When we picked up the keys to this hand-finished, hyperpersonalised machine in Dolomite silver, we had expected refinement. What we didn’t expect was for it to charm us like a charismatic villain in a Bond film. From the moment we stood in its presence, we knew this wasn’t going to be just a drive, it was going to be a mind-altering experience.
STYLED TO STAND OUT
To call the Panamera handsome would be an understatement. In this Manufacturer Exclusive Edition, it’s more like haute couture on wheels. The SportDesign Package painted in stealthy black high-gloss reshapes the fascia and adds a sharper, more aggressive attitude. The Exclusive Design taillights and tinted HD Matrix LED headlights keep things distinctively Porsche but with an edge that’s all about craftsmanship. From the model designation in black to the side window trims and door handle inlays painted in body colour, the detailing is meticulous and undeniably bespoke. The 21-inch Panamera Exclusive Design wheels, painted in black with highly polished surfaces, are both aggressive and elegant, like a tailored suit with racing gloves. Paired with Exclusive Design taillights and silver sports exhaust tailpipes, this car looks ready to launch even while parked at valet.
LUXURY UP CLOSE
Stepping inside, we were immediately greeted by a sensory hug of Barrique Club leather –soft, deep and unlike anything in the standard lineup. This isn’t just leather, it’s craftsmanship in tactile form.
We agreed the interior to be an effortless blend of German precision and Gulf-style luxury –rich, detailed and built to impress. Thanks to the carbon matt interior package, every surface we touched, from the leather wrapped GT sports steering wheel, to the illuminated door sill guards, felt deliberate and indulgent. Even the air vent surrounds have been thoughtfully upgraded. The overall cabin layout is driver-focussed, but not lacking character. To us, it felt more like a first-class cockpit, suited for everything from fast-track straights to Downtown Manama traffic. We loved the Porsche crest on the headrests, a small but powerful reminder of the marque’s DNA, sitting right behind our perfectly positioned heads. The adaptive sports front seats are 18-way adjustable and offer the kind of support that says, “Take the long way home”.
EFFORTLESS INNOVATION
Whilst admiring the interior artistry, we noticed the Exclusive Edition Model quietly flexing its tech muscles. The passenger display was a particular talking point, giving our designated

From the moment we stood in its presence, we knew this wasn’t going to be just a drive, it was going to be a mindaltering experience.
co-pilot full command of media, navigation, and much more.
The true showstopper? the Burmester 3D HighEnd Surround Sound System that wrapped us in audio so immersive, it was like having our own private symphony on four wheels. It felt like we were listening to our favourite drive anthems for the first time.
Of course, Porsche has equipped as standard on all models, wireless smartphone integration, seamless connectivity, a head-up display and a central display that feels more like a top-of-therange tablet than a dashboard.
PURE PORSCHE POWER
Now, let’s get down to business (Cue Tiësto). Porsche has added a layer of focussed urgency to the Exclusive Edition’s drive, by including the Sports Chrome Package. It has paired this with Porsche Active Suspension Management and adaptive air suspension and, let us tell you, the power and precision are almost unbelievable!

Please

We found the eight-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) gearbox to be as sharp as ever, responding with such finesse that we began to think it was reading our minds. Add the sports exhaust tailpipes into the equation and it sounds as fast as it feels, without ever being brash. Despite revelling in the Panamera’s grand touring comfort, make no mistake, we found nothing soft about this car’s performance. It cornered like it’s on rails and hit highway speeds with astonishing grace. Yet somehow, it never seemed to take any strain whatsoever. A truly otherworldly driving experience.
PEACE OF MIND
Performance may be Porsche’s love language, but it also speaks fluent safety. Lane Change Assist, Surround View Active Parking Support and soft-close doors all come as standard, making city driving feel less like a chore and more like a mini privilege.
More of a convenience than a safety feature is the 90-litre fuel tank that gives you range for days, even if those days include high-speed runs through open desert highways.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Now, don’t get us wrong, the standard 2025 Porsche Panamera is already a phenomenal car. With its sleek design, cutting-edge tech and signature Porsche performance, it easily holds its own in the upper echelons of the luxury saloon league. However, once you’ve experienced the Manufacturer Exclusive Edition, there’s simply no going back. It takes everything that’s great about the Panamera and elevates it into something far more personal, more indulgent and frankly, more irresistible.

THE EPITOME OF ITALIAN STYLE

The latest horological offering from the House of Versace is ideal for summer with its moonphase dial and planetary aspect highlighting the changing of the seasons.

Constructed in stainless steel and running on the Swiss Made RONDA 706B.1 movement, the V-Galaxy Moonphase elegantly merges contemporary design with galactic elements. Housed in a sleek, 43mm round case with rectangular bracelet links and a butterfly buckle, the timepiece incorporates a yearly calendar in addition to zodiac signs and planets. The iconic Medusa head and Versace logo feature at 12 o’clock while a moonphase window appears on the blue aventurine dial showcasing the lunar cycle. Counters indicate day and date and a dedicated hand indicates the week of the year.
The face features a series of rings, the first showing zodiac signs, the second displaying the planets and the third ring recording the weeks of the year. The glowing full moon is customised with the brand’s iconic Medusa head.
The Versace Watches Spring-Summer 2025 collection shares in the rich codes of the house’s fashion collections and its signature sculptural approach to design. These highly crafted shapes impart impact when worn and each watch can be considered a piece of wearable design.
Reference points within classical arts, mythology and the celestial which are ever prevalent in Versace design – including the iconic Medusa and the Greca motifs – are reworked across the seasonal collection in both explicit and more subtle, enticing ways.

A CELEBRATION OF SWISS WATCHMAKING HERITAGE

The Hölstein Edition 2025 is the sixth release in the annual limited-edition series from Swiss watchmaker Oris, that commemorates the brand’s founding.

LLimited to just 250 pieces, this year’s model is a bold, monochromatic take on the iconic ProPilot, featuring a full-lume dial and a hidden surprise with a sense of fun: the beloved Oris Bear glowing in silhouette. The Hölstein Edition 2025, which takes its name from the village in which Oris was established in 1904, reflects the company’s enduring commitment to mechanical excellence, independent watchmaking – it’s one of the few remaining independent manufacturers – and a signature sense of joy.
Reflecting on the release and the sense of heritage it reflects, Oris Co-CEO Rolf Studer said: “There’s just no place like home. We make these watches not because we have to, but because they bring us and our community genuine happiness.”
The 41mm stainless steel case is coated in black DLC and houses a full Super-LumiNova dial that glows green in the dark. The Oris Bear appears in silhouette between three and four o’clock. Like its predecessors, the watch omits a date window, making it a pure collector’s piece. Inside beats the in-house Calibre 400, offering a five-day power reserve, elevated anti-magnetism, a 10-year warranty and recommended 10-year service intervals.
Each of the 250 pieces is individually numbered and finished with a transparent case back, a Super-LumiNova ring and the engraving: Hölstein Edition 2025.
A tribute to heritage and joy in equal measure, this is a watch that follows feelings not rules.

QUALITY IN CRAFT AND FABRICATION

This season’s collection from TOM FORD showcases sleek lines with graphic, erotic appeal.
Women’s and men’s styling is complementary, featuring tried and tested summer neutrals with pops of pink and the occasional floral or animal print to lift the mood. Materials give substance to colours: lurex tailored wool, silk georgette, patent leather, liquid jersey, silk twill and wet-look silk.
The TOM FORD man displays a newfound sense of ease.
The tailoring he dons is just as slim and glittery as that of his feminine counterpart, and he shows his legs just as well, wearing short shorts even under formal blazers.
A seductive character with an ambiguous manner, he aspires
to the wardrobe of an edgy indie musician: satin varsity jackets, sleek suits, skinny shirts and safari attire with animal print blouses. Accessories make a statement with a padlock as a pendant, a clutch, a tote or a duffle in his hand, coupled with oversized aviators and boat shoes.
This collection is all about beauty in both quality and craft, empowered glamour meets elegant seduction.

ICONIC ITALIAN INSPIRATION

Named Movimento Delle Idee – or Movement of Ideas – this season’s men’s collection from Peserico is inspired by Italian motor racing icon Tazio Nuvolari.
Competing in the 1920s and ‘30s, an era of uncertain and heroic driving, the ‘Nuvola’ – as he was known – repeatedly flouted human limits, adapting to changing track conditions and taking risks in pursuit of greatness.
That same boldness is seen from Peserico combining sophisticated knitwear in cotton, linen and silk with the consistency of three-dimensional weaves and brick stitch, contrasted in turn with the softness of terry cloth and the dynamism of micromesh.
The technology of waterproof and windproof fabrics is seamlessly integrated into varsity jackets, parkas and overshirts and Saharan jackets in waterproofed faded linen.
Loro Piana fabrics express the most sartorial part of the collection, which also includes pinstripe or linens in the semi-
lined suits with a dynamic, effortlessly chic mood.
The colour palette, dominated by shades of blue, gives body and depth to the whole: the shades Saline, Avio, Celeste and Baia fade into the most austere nuances of Space Blue and Abyss. In contrast, beiges: Quartz Sand, Dunes and Dirt Roads lead to an intense tobacco brown. Nature also emerges, but with desaturated colours: Mediterranean Scrub Green, Powder Pink, Wheat and Clay, with hints of Cement, Steel and Lunar gray, refreshed by the whites of Cloud and Light.
This collection is flawless, methodical and classical with a side of up-to-date innovation.

MAKING MAGICAL MEMORIES IN THE MALDIVES

Hadag was invited to the Niyama Private Islands resort to spend three days and nights in this extraordinary part of the world.

It is challenging for one to think of a place on Earth that beats the breathtaking beauty of the Maldives. Renowned for its sapphire blue waters, white powdery beaches, green tropical forests and golden sunshine, this archipelago has been attracting tourists from all over the planet to its shores for decades.
The Journey
Half the adventure of visiting the Maldives is the journey there.
Positioned southwest of Sri Lanka and India, about 750 kilometres from mainland Asia, The Maldives is an archipelagic country formed by 26 natural atolls consisting of 1,192 islands.
Once at Valena International Airport, it was a comfortable and spectacular 45-minute flight by seaplane to the Niyama Islands.
Set in the pristine, crystal-clear waters of Dhaalu Atoll, we were in awe of the beauty of the two islands, aptly named Play and Chill, as we approached from above. From the sparkling waters to the lush greenery to the quintessentially Maldivian layout of the accommodation, we could not have been more excited to land in this tropical paradise. On arrival, we were greeted like long-lost friends, experienced a hassle-free check in and were soon on the way to our stunning villa.
Picturesque Accommodation
The dual-island setup of the resort ensures plenty of space for guests to feel comfortable and exclusive. The location has 134 accommodations of various types that suit different needs, budgets, tastes and preferences. An assortment of villas is on offer, including Beach, Beach Pool, Over Water Pool and Family Beach Pool options. Deluxe versions of each of these are also available.
Our Deluxe Over Water Pool Villa was the accommodation travellers dream of. An overwater ocean haven with plenty of room to play. Each morning, we awoke to the glimmers of sunlight reflecting off the lagoon. It was hasslefree to descend into the refreshing waters or to plunge into our private pool. The starlit Jacuzzi was our best friend each evening as we sat and soaked up the magnificence of our surroundings. Inside the 190sq/m villa, there was plenty of space for three adults and a child. The king-sized bed was amongst the most comfortable I have had the pleasure of sleeping on. The oversized soaking tub proved a welcome addition after long days on the beach, as did the large rain shower. Special extras included strong complementary wi-fi, a much-appreciated Nespresso machine and even a popcorn machine. If these spectacular accommodation options are not impressive enough, the resort also offers a variety of sizeable pavilions for larger families and groups. Then there is The Cresent, the crown jewel of the Niyama Private Islands. This overwater world consists of five pool villas for up to 22 guests. Along with all the bells and whistles, it comes with two Thakurus (Villa Hosts) that keep this oasis running smoothly throughout your stay.
Classy Cuisine
Not only does Niyama offer the very best when

it comes to accommodations, but also the finest range of culinary experiences.
Nest
The first night we spent at Nest. To reach our table we navigated the jungle on a labyrinth of wooden walkways to a private perch amongst the treetops. It was in this unique location, surrounded by natural beauty, where we partook of scrumptious Asian cuisine. The talented Thai, Chinese, Japanese and Indonesian chefs provided nothing less than an unforgettable night out.
SUBSIX
It is hard to imagine another dining experience topping the one we had at Nest however, the most novel meal we had during our stay was at SUBSIX, a simply surreal underwater restaurant. Arriving by speedboat, we made our way down a stunning three-tier staircase lit by Italian abstract chandeliers resembling radiant coral. Once submerged, we admired the flowing curves of the clam-inspired refreshment area. The anemone chairs beneath a canopy of capiz shells swaying gently from the ceiling ensured we were completely immersed in the experience. Along with the captivating nature of the restaurant, the five-course Nikkei tasting menu proved exceptional, with all the quality ingredients taken from the beautiful waters that surrounded us. This is definitely one of the finest and most unique dining experiences we’ve ever had. The resort boasts several other high-end restaurants and entertainment options to choose from, offering an array of cuisines and culinary experiences.
Wellness Resort Spa
Yet another sublime offering from Niyama is the exquisite Wellness Resort Spa. Feeling the powdery sand between our toes and the familiar warmth of the sun on our faces, we set out along the beach and into a world of pure relaxation. Once inside the centre, we were greeted by a serene environment that gave an instant sense of calm.
The spa is made up of six overwater treatment rooms and two idyllic garden sanctuaries with an outdoor bath, rain shower and daybed. We found the Lime Tree Garden perfect for complete relaxation and took advantage of the sauna, steam baths, plunge pool and the Vitality juice bar. Various treatments are available, including messages, body treatments, facials, Ayurvedic treatments and ancient healing traditions. These experiences can be had solo, as a couple or as a family.
Additional Amenities
To ensure there is plenty to do around the island for the whole family, the resort has ample in-house amenities designed to keep everyone thoroughly entertained.
A floodlit tennis court surrounded by dense vegetation is available for booking. We enjoyed the 24-hour gym fitted with state-of-the-art equipment, offering a variety of workout classes. Furthermore, the additional Pump Studio delivers a high-energy workout session designed to get your blood flowing. Whenever we felt a little lazy, we ventured to The Lair, an indoor, climate-controlled room on the isle of Chill with ultra-comfortable seating and plenty of books, magazines and
DVDs to choose from.

We also frequented the games room, which is equipped with a pool table, air hockey, table tennis, a PS5 and an Xbox One. Admittedly, there were times when we had to drag ourselves away from this addictive zone and back into the beautiful outdoor environment.
Lapping up the Leisure
Thanks to its numerous natural atolls the Maldives is one of the world’s primary destinations for ocean life experiences. This life includes sea turtles, dolphins, whale sharks, manta rays and beautiful coral reefs, home to thousands of fish species.
Niyama Private Islands resort offers various ocean adventures in one of the most breathtaking aquatic environments. These include snorkelling and diving, allowing you to experience a guided tour of the reefs and the pure beauty of the deep blue Indian Ocean. There is also the option of taking a boat with sea-savvy guides to witness dolphins playing in their natural environment. Other cruising and boating opportunities such as big game fishing or catamaran adventures are available. Water sports on offer include Jet Skiing, waterskiing, mono-skiing, wakeboarding, knee boarding, surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, parasailing, glass kayaking and SEABOB racing.
Heading Home
All too soon, it was time to depart this dual-island paradise. As difficult as it was to leave Niyama Private Islands, we took a wealth of unforgettable memories with us that will always be treasured. We thank all the staff members for their kindness and attentiveness. They were the heart and soul of this remarkable adventure.

A PALACE AMONG HOTELS

Hadag ventured to the heart of the historical city of Budapest to spend two days and nights in an authentic palace of astonishing beauty.

Budapest is one of those mystical cities whose very name conjures a sense of rich history and great adventure. Travellers the world over make their way to this enchanting location where East meets West to experience this one-ofa-kind destination.
Hadag was recently invited to spend an unforgettable two days and nights at perhaps the grandest venue in the city, the Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace, Budapest. The five-hour flight proved a mere formality when faced with the opportunity to indulge in the opulence we encountered over the following of days.
Breathtaking Budapest
As we drove through the historical city’s charming streets laden with romantic architecture, we already knew we would have to return to this part of the world to explore all Budapest has to offer. We were surprised by the amount of greenery we witnessed en route and combined with the waterways and beautifully crafted buildings, felt instantly drawn to this captivating place.
The Gresham Palace
Once we arrived at the Four Seasons, we knew we were taking in more than just a luxury hotel. Constructed in 1906, the Gresham Palace has long intrigued residents and visitors alike with its sheer magnificence. Recognised as one of the world’s finest Art Nouveau/Secessionist structures and known for its historical mix of high finance and bohemia, its evolution into the only Forbes fivestar hotel in Hungary is fascinating.
Built by the most talented Hungarian artists and craftspeople of the era for the Gresham Life Assurance Company, the building became Budapest’s most prestigious address as well as a place to shop and be seen in the exclusive boutiques in the ground floor arcade. It was also the meeting place of Hungary’s most influential artists. The siege of Budapest during the Second World War threatened to destroy this iconic venue. The German Army's retreat in 1944 led to the blowing up of the Chain Bridge. The peacock gates were wrenched off their hinges and the façade was scarred by the explosion. Nominal repairs were carried out soon after but, due to a lack of money and materials, the building underwent a serious downgrade. In 1948, British and American diplomats were to be the next inhabitants of the famous palace. Eventually named a protected landmark in the 1970s, the mansion gradually fell into a state of disrepair.
Many years later, as Gresham had done, Four Seasons hired the best talent in Hungary to restore the building. Wrought-iron specialists, silversmiths, stained-glass makers, ceramists, mosaicists and other craftspeople assembled to preserve whatever artwork remained and to reconstruct the palace based on research into how it was first built. It took thousands of hours for a unique team of highly trained masters to bring the building back to its former glory. By 2004, the palace’s Art Nouveau beauty had been exquisitely restored,

combined with the works of many noted Hungarian artists and sculptors who had left their mark on the historical building. The Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace, Budapest had been born.
The Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace, Budapest
Entering the iconic wrought iron peacock gates, we felt we were stepping into the history of Budapest. We were captivated by how the enchanting lobby is adorned with more than two million mosaic tiles, illuminated by a striking chandelier.
Our first staff encounters as we entered the brilliant building were the impressive bellmen, who welcomed us in the most helpful, polite and friendly manner.
The check in process was a swift one and we were soon on our way to our room. En route, we were gifted the story of the property, its history and its evolution into the exceptional venue we were now making our way through.
This glamourous five-story hotel contains 160 guest rooms and 19 suites. These include Danube River View Rooms with fairytale views of the city’s iconic sites, Art-Deco-style Superior Rooms combining residential comfort with intuitive workspace, River-View Park Suites ideal for families, two Presidential Suites, offering all the beauty and perks of an upmarket Budapest apartment, and the Royal Suite, that delivers nothing less than the very best of everything. Hotel amenities also include venues for weddings, meetings and events.
Although my room was situated on the first floor, I couldn’t have been any happier with the view. Kitted with everything I needed for the most comfortable of stays, I spent two nights in absolute bliss. On entry, I was even pampered with a delicious plate of dark chocolate.
Captivating Cuisine
During our stay, we thoroughly enjoyed lavish meals at the in-hotel restaurants, including the famous Múzsa Bar, named Best European Bar at the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards in 2021. At the Four Seasons, we had the option to indulge in dishes ranging from contemporary French cuisine to Hungarian specialities and Asian flavours. We particularly appreciated the buffet and á la carte breakfasts where, I must say, I sampled the best French toast I have ever tasted, perfectly caramelised with a very milky and tender interior. Simply delicious!
The hotel also offers scrumptious in-room dining, decadent cakes to go, a three-course Sunday brunch, bespoke private grape tasting and Herend Afternoon Tea, served in the speciality porcelain manufacturer’s hand painted sets, on weekends complete with Hungarian cakes and savoury delights.
A Serenity Spa
One of my favourite experiences at the property was visiting the well-equipped spa. Housing an indoor pool with a fabulous view, tasteful décor, a curated selection of treatments, a diversity of spa products and skilled therapists, this sanctuary combines advanced wellness techniques with traditional Hungarian rituals that restore visitors’ natural vitality through personalised experiences. Amongst these offerings are massages, signature experiences, facial treatments, body treatments and nail care and beauty.

A Tour of the City
As the hotel is located in the very centre of Budapest, the city is very accessible to all guests. This magical metropolis was made all the easier for us to experience thanks to a motorised city tour that was booked for us through the hotel. Led by an excellent guide, we made our way around Buda and Pest, taking in the Danube River, the amazing architecture, the fascinating streets and the general hustle and bustle of this historical location. We couldn’t have had a more colourful and enjoyable encounter with the city.
Leaving too Soon
It felt like we blinked and it was already time to leave the Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace, Budapest, along with our new favourite city of Budapest. Despite having only spent a couple of days and nights at this unforgettable location, we felt we had formed a connection with this historical city. We promised to revisit this special place and once again stay in the palace amongst hotels.

A STUNNING SPANISH SOJOURN

Liz O’Reilly stayed at an outstanding property and shared amazing adventures on a trip to Spain’s Andalusia region.

For me, Malaga, in the heart of Spain’s Andalusia region, will always conjure images of golf since the municipality is home to more than 60 courses which have been attracting visitors for decades.
However, a visit to Anantara Villa Padierna Palace
Benahavís Marbella Resort was the ideal opportunity to discover that this area has so much more to offer.
Driving up to the property, which is indeed surrounded by rolling, manicured greens (Flamingos Golf is the centre piece but the resort actually commands 54 holes from its prime position as the hub of three courses) it would be easy to imagine this imposing edifice as an ancient palace.
Inside, a soaring, glass-roofed atrium surrounded by tiers of rooms behind Moorishstyle arches, an abundance of water features, artworks and classical statuary combine to enhance this impression.
In fact, this resort, which is almost part museum, houses a collection of more than 1,200 works of art spread throughout the spa, gardens, lounges and guest rooms. Highlights include pieces of Greco-Roman sculpture, works from the Iberian period, noble coats of arms and a selection of extraordinary period-spanning canvases signed by prominent artists, not to mention an imposing Roman amphitheatre. So, it’s surprising to discover that this modern-day palace is, in fact, less than 25 years old and was purpose built to serve the vision of its owner and as a tribute to his wife.
Walking through the doors, the first thing I noticed was the fabulous scent of fresh flowers, as gorgeous spring floral arrangements took centre stage in the expansive lobby area. Friendly and helpful staff welcomed us and, after a brief and efficient check in, I was quickly headed to my room.
My super comfortable accommodation was both spacious and gracious. Sepia toned, toile de jouy-style wallpaper dotted with whimsical prints in golden frames gave an air of classical luxury. The large bed, in its pristine white linens, faced a cosy seating area with sofa and chair while a handy desk provided plenty of workspace.
A walk-through dressing area abutted the bathroom, which was clad in marble, picking up the tones of the wallpaper, and boasted both a powerful shower and a separate and very appealing tub. A generous selection of amenities from Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle made me feel both welcomed and pampered.
Destination Dining
I spent a few minutes taking in the gorgeous view of those endless rolling greens from my window before heading to lunch at La Loggia which boasts a farmers’ market-style concept with bright baskets of local fruits and vegetables that you can choose to have included

in your meal.
We sat on the sun-soaked terrace and enjoyed an exceptional selection of black-skinned tomatoes, visually striking and perfect with a sprinkle of coarse salt, accompanied by rich, creamy cheese and the wonderful Malagan speciality of gazpacho with juicy prawns. A selection of fabulous desserts had us all exclaiming aloud.
La Logia is just one of this fabulous property’s dining venues which also include, among others, 99 Sushi Bar & Restaurant, Irene’s Health Kitchen, where Chef Irene Hernández serves up a menu of healthy and detoxifying dishes, and the recently added Olà Beirut where you’ll find classic Middle Eastern flavours – a touch of home for us.
On our first evening, we were treated to a sublime experience at La Veranda, the resort’s iconic dining venue which presents a combination of heritage local dishes and favourites from the last 20 years, all curated under the watchful eye of Head Chef José Carlos Delgado Serrano.
We began with a mezze selection from Olà Beirut which, to my delight, included some of the best Fattoush I’ve come across. The amuse bouche was savoury beetroot macarons, something I’ve never tried before and an absolute hit with an earthy deep pink shell encasing a tart cheesy filling. The rest of the meal was equally innovative and impressive with wild sea bass loin perfectly complemented by pea puree and caviar beurre blanc and, my personal favourite, the dessert of pistachio crème brûlée with orange blossom ice cream. Simply outstanding.
One of Anatara’s great strengths is the group’s ability to offer guests unique experiences at each of its properties. In terms of dining, they saved the best for last with Designer Dining by Anantara, an incredible feast on our final night. In a gorgeously decorated private dining room, we were served a selection of dishes inspired by one of Malaga’s most famous sons, Pablo Picasso.
With a menu printed on a stylised paint palette, our hosts informed us that the dishes, including Marenga style clams, Ajoblanco with almonds and tuna with onion, were known to be some of the artist’s favourites, according to information from the Picasso Foundation – this was no selection plucked from thin air – and every mouthful offered a taste of tradition.
Entertainment came from a talented flamenco duo of guitarist and dancer, the cherry on the cake being the opportunity to join in with the dancing. An absolutely perfect way to showcase the very best of local Malagan heritage that ensured we headed home with the happiest of memories.
Outstanding Experiences
On the subject of Anantara’s experiential offerings, we spent a memorable day sampling some of the premium options available in the region, starting with a visit to La Almazara, an Andalusian olive farm where we enjoyed a guided tour. We learned about the different types of trees and growing procedures before visiting the pressing machinery in a purpose-built, one-of-a-kind, boutique olive mill housed in a stunning building, designed

by Philippe Starck to resemble one of the region’s iconic bulls.
A guided tasting gave us the chance to snap up some of this premium golden liquid to take home before we headed to our next stop. The Spanish Horse Experience allowed us to get up close to native breeds in a huge area of natural habitat that’s been declared a UNESCO biosphere reserve. We also saw some of the show horses going though their training and even visited the stables where, I have to admit, I fell a little bit in love with a certain spikey maned young chap – sadly, they wouldn’t let me take him home!
After a tour round the reserve, we headed to neighbouring Ronda, one of Andalusia’s most iconic towns which is built around a deep gorge. The scenery here is absolutely stunning and, following another exceptional meal, we took great delight in strolling the winding streets, visiting pretty shops and a fascinating museum and then staring into the vertiginous gorge as we crossed the bridge which divides the town’s newer and older sides.
So, To Spa
It wouldn’t be Anantara without a trip to the spa and the one at Villa Padierna is really quite something. One of the largest in Europe, it features more than 2,000sq/m of Roman and Turkish baths with 13 treatment rooms and a salon.
Gentle tones of cream and golden hued marble make for an atmosphere of relaxation and gentle opulence, while brands such as

Valmont, Biologique, Esthederm, Comfort Zone, Piroche and Oribe add to the feeling of exclusivity.
I visited the aromatic spa circuit, the only one of its kind on the Costa del Sol, which consists of a series of steam rooms – salt, rose and Hammam – as well as a rose-scented bath and ice facilities. I must admit I was not keen on the idea of this – I’m really not a big fan of steam therapy. But I’m always keen to try a new experience and the salt option, in which you rub liberal amounts of coarse salt onto steam heated skin, left my skin feeling absolutely amazing. I’m now a firm believer and total convert.
In the capable hands of therapist Victoria, I enjoyed a gentle aromatherapy massage with almond oil and sweet orange followed by time in the relaxation room with lemon and ginger tea beside a gentle fountain looking onto the indoor pool.
All to soon it was time to wish ‘adiós’ to this amazing property and the new friends we had made there. From the impeccable accommodation to the friendly and efficient staff and from the delectable dining to the wonderful experiences laid on for us, we truly couldn’t have asked for more. We left, vowing to return and maybe next time, we’ll even get in a round of golf.

ELEMENTAL CULINARY EXCELLENCE

High-quality, organic ingredients and zero waste combine with an elemental attitude to produce the stunning creations Ailsa Whyatt encounters on a visit to MURU.

MURU, or ‘seed of life’ in the Spanish macrolanguage of Quechua, is the brainchild of celebrity chef Mauro Colagreco. The eatery, at the Waldorf Astoria Doha West Bay, celebrates the elements of water, earth, fire and air, with ‘elemental zones’ across the space. As my guest and I arrive, we are struck by a rug in a floral tree pattern in shades of blue, green, yellow and red, giving us just a hint of the care and thought that has been woven into every detail of the restaurant. Joaquin (our server and ingredients expert extraordinaire) and Sebastian (Beverage Manager for the hotel and one of the creative geniuses behind the drinks menu) ensure our every need is catered for tonight, as they dazzle us with the innovation we see throughout this immersive dining experience.
Sebastian explains that in the kitchen and bar, any and all organic leftovers are used to make new creations, whether it be dehydrating remaining pulp from some freshly pressed juice to create fruit leather; thinly sliced leftover vegetable cuts baked into crisp garnishes; or even freezing an avocado stone into a block of the clearest ice to garnish a delicious drink. We start with some water-themed mocktails: a gloriously blue Perfect Wave, which mimics
the colours and movement of the sea, adorned with a coral tuille. A gentle jasmine aftertaste follows crisp clarified apple juice like the ebb of a tide, and flavouring from combu algae seaweed gives a hint of the sea. We also try a Tansan Mizu, a light and fresh creation using purple and green shiso, the perfect balance to our arriving food.
Joaquin brings out the Classic Ceviche, made with the freshest red snapper, which is tender and delicate and complemented by leche de tigre, mango, pomegranate jewels and onion. The kick of the flower (jalapeño) and Holland chillis running through the coriander oil and lime juice bring the dish together. A beautiful tapioca cracker with crushed nori powder adds a lovely ‘sea breeze’ to the dish – the effect of all the parts together is simply delicious. Too often, maki rolls are heavy on rice and severely lacking individual flavour – not at MURU. In the Flaming Salmon Maki Rolls, we find chunky morsels of glorious Alaskan wild salmon, complemented by asparagus, avocado and sundried tomatoes, and the gentle warmth of teriyaki sauce from within, dusted with breadcrumbs for texture. Ponzu jelly, wasabi and coriander emulsion and ginger gel droplets sit next to the maki, providing us with an appetiser that is both colourfully elegant and hearty. We also try the indulgently creamy and ever-sofresh Crémeux Burrata Salad. I am reminded of artisan farmers’ markets, as flavour-packed heirloom and cherry tomatoes contrast with the verdancy of the basil, sitting atop the sumptuous burrata, with pistachio pieces adding crunch and texture. Next is fire, where the melt-in-the-mouth pastry of the Criolla Empanadas envelops Wagyu steak and beef brisket mixed with cumin, paprika and green olives, served with a hearty criolla sauce. We also sample the Pulpo Anticuchero, where tender pieces of octopus have been steeped in anticucho marination, which includes spicy aji panca (Peruvian chilli paste). It comes served with huancaina (a decadent, cheesy Peruvian sauce), potato causa (a layered potato dish) and rich, purple olive droplets. We top this off with some earth and fire mocktails. The focus for the earth element is locally sourced ingredients combined with unexpected and inventive flavours – El Carmen de Bolivar being both delicious and intriguing, with its avocado water, lime and garam masala giving way to smoky undertones of salt and lapsang tea. Fire showcases toasted, smoked and grilled flavours with charcoal and caramelised undertones. My particular favourite, the Carbon, contains tamarind steeped in ginger, with smoky lapsang souchong and a lightly nutty flavour, garnished with a stunning shard of meringue. Our main course for fire is lamb chops with a side of grilled corn. The lamb is tenderised in fresh pineapple juice, seasoned with aji panca, cumin, paprika, oregano and raisin oil, with a dash of salt and pepper seasoning. The chops are served with parsley panko on top and a heavenly buttery spinach cream, with peas and red bell pepper on the side. Not to be overlooked is the corn, which is flame-grilled on the cob and the kernels are then combined with chilli powder, bell peppers, onion, spicy butter and grilled lime, which lifts the sweetness to create a satisfyingly citrusy contrast.

To round things off, Joaquin proudly brings forth our air dessert. This is not just dessert, it is an at-the-table dining experience. The MURU Pineapple is the perfect and rather spectacular end to any meal. A whole pineapple has been divided into three sections, each layer hiding its own creation. Diced pineapple with vanilla syrup and lime zest comprises the top Pineapple Salsa layer, the middle layer is a soft and creamy Pineapple Ice Cream, and a classic vanilla Crème Brulé sits at the bottom. Joaquin adds brown sugar to the final layer and blow torches it in front of us as we watch the caramel crunch appear. The effect is wonderful, and the combination of flavours (Joaquin is keen to ensure we have a mouthful of each of the three layers all at once to fully experience the dish as intended) is stunning.
Dessert is perfectly complimented by the Zephir, an air mocktail where the husk, flower and peel of bananas have been vacuum sealed for 24 hours with sugar to release all the sweetness of the fruit. This is combined with fig leaves, juniper berries and peppercorn and spritzed with roasted sesame oil to give a heady and moreish nose.
We are privileged to have many restaurants to sample in Qatar, but if you want an immersive experience where you can be sure that every part of the delicious organic ingredients is used and in ways you could not possibly have imagined, you cannot do better than realigning and re-centring yourself to nature’s elements and joining MURU for an unforgettable culinary journey.

JAPANESE DINING IN AN ELEVATED SETTING

Sumosan has brought its trademark dishes to the Bahrain food scene, offering contemporary Japanese fare. Fernanda Langhammer headed there to see what’s on the menu.

Japasene cuisine, for me, is without doubt, one of the most exciting options around. Delicate flavours, emphasis on freshness and stunning presentation are pretty much guaranteed. So, when I was invited to explore the culinary offerings at Sumosan, I was more than happy to head to Address Beach Resort Bahrain, where the island’s branch of this famous London restaurant is located.
Just by stepping inside, you realise it is quite a unique place. The décor is impeccable. There is a pre-area with a long plush sofa and a separate entertainment space for those who would like to enjoy some beverages before dinner. The herringbone flooring gives a sophisticated feel and chandeliers that look like a contemporary interpretation of iconic Japanese umbrellas create an ambience that is welcoming, yet edgy. My favourite detail was the many vases with plants throughout the space. They add a vibrant and natural vibe that makes it more inviting and alive.
We sat near the open kitchen, which at Sumosan is entirely open, not like other places that say open kitchen, but you only have a part view of it. Here, you can watch the chefs and the whole kitchen team’s every step, preparing each and every component of the menu with clinical attention. Everything looked spotless.
We started our dining experience with the Seabass Carpaccio, delicate thin slices of seabass bathed in basil oil and yuzu ponzu sauce (a citrus seasoned soy sauce), that added an acidic touch and slightly ‘cooked’ the fish, and dots of guacamole. It was beautifully composed with the fish melting in the mouth in an explosion of intense yet well-balanced and refreshing flavours. The Avocado Salad followed, a tower of green leaves with avocado slices creating the base. The addition of pear, seaweed, caramelised pecans and toasted buckwheat gave depth and texture in each bite and the cashew miso sauce enveloped all the elements – a dish that we kept going to back for more. We also had the Seared Wagyu Beef Tataki, which was an ode to the high-quality meat, thin slices adorned with one piece of crispy garlic for a nutty touch, highlighting the beautiful natural flavour of the Wagyu. Completing the starters spread was a clever twist, the Salmon Crispy Rice Pizza, yes, you read it right, pizza! But the resemblance to this Italian staple was in the concept of layers. The rice base, a round, fried, super crispy and delicious ‘dough’ was covered in spicy cream cheese, then a layer of cucumber slices topped with raw salmon. The accompanying chilli tomato salsa enhanced the spiciness. A dish that was fun to eat, concocted with different textures for a satisfying bite, we all loved it.
After an impressive beginning, we moved on to the mains. I am a shrimp lover and the Wasabi Prawns came with a sweet surprise, the fried pieces were placed on a bed of mango and passion fruit salsa. The prawns were enveloped in tempura batter, the savoury hint of the fried delicacy mixed perfectly with the sweet and tangy
fruit base – a mix of ingredients that created an interesting play on our palates. And as expected in any Japanese restaurant, we had a Sushi and Sashimi Platter – what a treat! We had three types of nigiri and sashimi: salmon, hamachi (yellowtail fish) and otoro (the fatty part of the tuna belly). Hamachi was my favourite for its firm but buttery texture and mild flavour, which was absolutely amazing. From the maki rolls selection, the Spicy Yellowtail was the winner for me, simply elaborated with cucumber, spicy mayo and spring onion, it had the softness of the fish contrasting with the crunchiness of the cucumber with a hint of heat in the most perfect size for a pleasant bite, yum. We also had the signature Albemarle (named for Sumosan’s first location in London), which is the classic salmon and avocado with sprinkles of crispy rice and spicy tuna with mango salsa. The last main was the Wagyu Sando, made with a thick piece of pink Wagyu beef wrapped in Japanese home-baked milk bread with a golden and crispy toasted exterior. The sando is composed with two sauces: ponzu (a Japanese concoction usually made with soy sauce, citrus juice, mirin, rice vinegar and dashi) and Dijon mustard. The dish is not easy to accomplish, but the chefs at Sumosan were spot on! The meat was tender and full of flavour, respecting the characteristics of this premium cut.
If the mains were flawless, the side dishes shone through. The Glazed Aubergine was everyone’s favourite. The miso sesame sauce gave a caramelised coating that added sweetness and elevated the flavours of this ordinary vegetable. The Grilled Corn Ribs, coated in spicy yuzu kosho butter, were a satisfying yet very simple dish that we dug into with our hands, licking the juices off our fingertips – comfort food with an Asian hint.
The meal was enjoyed with special drinks – we tried Shironi, Café Smokyoto and Supai Ringo. The first two were quite robust, and the last one, made with green apple and popcorn, was light and refreshing. They can all be transformed into mocktails if requested.
And as every memorable dining experience should end, we had two spectacular desserts.
The Sumosan Chocolate Fondant is made with a thin dark chocolate cake with a molten white chocolate centre, matcha-covered and served with vanilla ice cream, a fantastic combination of warm, rich fondant contrasting with the light ice cream. However, the Warm Chocolate Cookie with salted caramel drizzle, also paired with ice cream, stole our hearts; the chewy interior and crispy corners hit the sweet spot with mastery.
The restaurant is open every day (except Mondays) from 5.30pm onwards, and according to Goncalo Santiago, Sumosan’s General Manager, the Friday brunches are unmissable! We must return for that to embrace a party atmosphere without compromising on what matters the most: tasteful food.

SURFING FOR SUSTAINABILITY AND ACCESSIBILITY

Bentley Motors commissioned a bespoke surfboard in collaboration with Marnie Rays and Otter Surfboards.
The premium automotive marque unveiled the one-of-a-kind Koa veneer board, created to explore the notion of craftsmanship and adventure. The surfboard was handcrafted using Bentley Koa veneer, sourced from the same wood shop in Crewe that is usually reserved for crafting the interiors of the world’s most desirable high performance grand tourers. The veneer was chosen during a visit to Bentley’s Crewe HQ by Lindsey Holland (founder of Marnie Rays which organises surf retreats) and James Otter (founder of Otter Surfboards).
Sustainably-sourced wood has been one of Bentley’s core interior components since the very first car over 100 years ago – and it continues to be an essential element of the unique craftsmanship seen in the cars today. The wood veneers are ethically sourced by experts who go to great lengths to find the finest veneers in the world.
After careful preparation by Bentley’s craftspeople, the Koa Veneer was passed on to James at his workshop in Cornwall, where he began the meticulous process of shaping the board by hand using his signature method. The one-of-a-kind surfboard is finished with etched logos of all three collaborators.
The process was captured through the lens of a short film that began at Bentley’s headquarters in Crewe, continuing to James’ workshop where the board was shaped, and finishes in the waves of the Cornish coast. Featuring the Bentayga Extended Wheelbase, the film is narrated by Lindsey through a unique poem, lending to the influence of the spirit of adventure underpinning the project. Following its debut, the surfboard was to be gifted to Surfability UK — a Community Interest Company dedicated to providing adaptive surfing lessons and experiences for individuals with disabilities, injuries or learning differences — who will auction the board to raise funds for its charity supporting the mission of making the ocean accessible to all.
