After five beautiful years on The Pearl, we’ve moved; not just to a new location, but into a space that reflects who we’ve become.
Every detail has been reimagined. From the handcrafted elements of our interior, to the refined harmony on each plate.

With its amazing skyline and ever-evolving cityscape, Doha never ceases to amaze. For the newly arrived, it can be a bit overwhelming and, often, people find themselves sticking to the same few places to visit, eat and socialise – even those of us who’ve been here for years. So, every once in a while, I like to take a bit of a dive into Qatar’s lesser-known gems. The things you only discover when you’ve been here a while or if you happen upon them by chance. This month’s cover story features quite a few of these, a couple of which are personal favourites – I’m a particular fan of the camel guard at the Amiri Diwan. Let me know if you decide to visit them.
We’re in the final run up to the Fact Diving Awards and, it’s a big one this year – our amazing 10th anniversary! So, as always, we’ve been out and about across the city, sampling fabulous food, from sublime steaks to seriously superior pub grub. You’ll find these and more, plus loads of great dining deals in our dedicated foodie section. We also spent a rather wonderful day at The Diplomatic Club trying out great food and adrenaline-pumping water sports and I get to tell you about my recent trip to Spain. Finally, I am not jealous of my colleagues.
The Listen Up section brings info on great events coming up across the city and we’ve got our usual selections of news from the worlds of fashion, tech, beauty and entertainment.
I hope you enjoy this month’s read as much as I did.

The Highmore rooftop lounge at Waldorf Astoria Doha Lusail will be the one-of-a-kind setting for a stunning theatrical production of John Steinbeck’s masterpiece Of Mice and Men this month.
Starring acclaimed actors Nigel Miles-Thomas and Michael Roy Andrew, the gripping drama tells the story of George Milton and Lennie Small, two displaced migrant ranch workers, as they move from place to place in California, searching for jobs during the Great Depression.
George is small and bright while Lennie is a large man, who would now be described as mentally impaired. The pair dream of buying a piece of land and setting up their own farm. George wants to make something of himself, while Lennie has a fixation with soft things and just wants to pet rabbits.
The story unfolds as they are hired at a farm and meet a cast of individuals, each with their own tale to tell ensuring gripping drama and emotional depth. The relationship between the
main characters and the eventual end of the dream is both fascinating and heart rending, making for excellent and thought-provoking theatre.
And, in addition to the exceptional theatre experience, guests can enjoy delectable food and drinks in a venue renowned for its elegance and welcoming feel of art and performance. The performance takes place on May 10, 11, 12 and 13 with doors opening at 7pm and the show starting at 8pm. Tickets are priced at QR95 and seating is limited. ✤

Eng. Abdulaziz Ali Al-Mawlawi, CEO of Visit Qatar, said:
“The launch of the international edition of this race marks a significant milestone not only in elevating Qatar’s profile in sports tourism, but in showcasing an authentic Qatari initiative that has demonstrated excellence at the local level and now steps confidently onto the global stage. It also reflects the strength of Qatar’s world-class infrastructure and the creativity embedded in its sporting culture. The race begins with a 3km swim, followed by a 49km run. Competitors then tackle a 44km mountain biking trail, before concluding with a 4km kayaking challenge. The race takes a point-to-point
format and must be completed in 12 hours.
The organising committee has allocated valuable cash prizes for the winners in both the men's and women's categories, with a total prize pool of approximately USD300,000.
The first-place winner will receive USD50,000, while the second and third places will be awarded USD30,000 and USD20,000 respectively. Competitors placing fourth to tenth will receive prizes ranging from USD10,000 to USD4,000, depending on their ranking.
Qatar’s global positioning as a hub for international sporting excellence continues to grow and events such as the Samla International Race contribute to its sporting legacy. Qatar Museums has launched the 2025 edition of the Tasweer Photo Festival Qatar which explores themes of belonging through eight exhibitions in five locations.
Anchored by the lead exhibition As I Lay Between Two Seas at the Fire Station: Artist in Residence, the exhibitions were unveiled by Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums. This edition, with all shows running until June 20, showcases the work of more than 88 artists from the Arab world and its diasporas. Joining As I Lay Between Two Seas are the exhibitions Daoud Aoulad Syad, Territories of the Instant; Obliteration – Surviving the Inferno: Gaza’s Battle for Existence; Refractions: Tasweer Project Awards; Threads of Light: Stories from the Tasweer Single Image Awards; Al-Mihrab, presenting Khalid Al-Al-Musallamany’s visual conversation about places of worship in Qatar; After The Game, highlighting photographers' and filmmakers' engagement with the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022; and Garangao 2025, featuring photographs submitted through an open call celebrating the power of photography in capturing a cherished tradition.
As I Lay Between Two Seas offers a poetic exploration of belonging, identity and home. Featuring works by 25 artists from the Arab world and its diasporas, the display examines these themes not as fixed states but as ongoing productions informed by ruptures, fragments and spectral traces. The exhibition is curated by Meriem Berrada. Al-Mihrab presents a visual conversation about places of worship in Qatar through the lens of artist Khalid AlMusallamany. Capturing mosques in both black and white and colour, old and new, the exhibition highlights the photographer’s unique architectural perspective as he documents Qatar's religious spaces. Curated by Khalifa Al Obaidly, the exhibition is on view at the Fire Station: Gallery 3. After The Game highlights the engagement of photographers and filmmakers with the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, showcasing diverse artistic perspectives that reflect each creator's unique vision and emotional response to the unfolding events – both inside the stadium
and beyond, among fans, around the clock and across every corner of Qatar. It’s at the Fire Station: Gallery 4. Garangao 2025, invited photographers to submit their images which will be on view at the Fire Station (Barahat). Daoud Aoulad-Syad, Territories of the Instant, curated by Meriem Berrada, celebrates over three decades of work by Moroccan photographer and filmmaker Daoud AouladSyad. Deeply intertwined with his cinematic vision and with Moroccan popular culture, his photography captures the soul of his homeland, particularly its most remote regions. The exhibition is on view at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art. Obliteration – Surviving the Inferno: Gaza’s Battle for Existence, curated by Dr. Bahaaeldin Abudaya, unfolds in five stages to capture various phases of the devastating war in Gaza. Tracing the conflict’s escalation over the past year, each stage serves as a powerful visual document of the unfolding tragedy, contextualised by texts that provide background on the ongoing genocide. The exhibition is on view in an outdoor venue at Katara Cultural Village.
Tasweer also presents two awards exhibitions curated by Sheikha Maryam Hassan Al-Thani:
Refractions: Tasweer Project Awards brings together 18 contemporary Arab photographers, winners from 2023 and 2024.Located in two interconnected buildings (45 and 46) at Katara Cultural Village, the exhibition explores the idea of belonging.
The second award exhibition, Threads of Light: Stories from the Tasweer Single Image Awards, showcases 32 winning photographs from 2023 and 2024. The exhibition highlights photographers from 12 countries across the Arab world and beyond and is on view at The Company House, Msheireb. ✤ GO: VISIT TASWEER.ORG.QA FOR A FULL PROGRAMME OF EVENTS.
La Mar by Gastón Acurio has reopened its doors following an exciting transformation.
The revitalised restaurant, at InterContinental Doha Beach & Spa, pays homage to Peru’s coastal roots through bold design, curated art and a vibrant new atmosphere throughout the venue.
Drawing from the country’s rich heritage, every corner of La Mar Doha has been thoughtfully reimagined to reflect the flavours and traditions of its origins.
Layered shades of blue, handpicked tiles inspired by nautical patterns and flowing chain curtains that evoke the movement of waves bring subtle references to the ocean, while a sculptural steel artwork by Pool Guillen, depicting native fish and traditional fishing boats, punctuates the walls, layered with rose gold screens designed on fish-scale shapes.
Breathtaking 3D reed woven octopus and squid, crafted in Lima by David Goicochea, embody one of Peru’s oldest art forms and take centre stage hanging suspended from the ceiling.
The Cebiche Bar remains a focus of the dining experience decorated with illustrations of marine life and offering an interactive culinary stage where chefs prepare the freshest catch of the day.
The design continues to draw from maritime traditions with handcrafted nautical knots by Tahani Khaled and striking entrance features by Jesús Pedraglio Belmont. These structural forms, inspired by floating buoys and wrapped in ropework, welcome guests into a space where storytelling
begins the moment they arrive.
One of the most colourful features within the restaurant is a woven textile wall created by Belmont, showcasing vivid fabrics that bring Peru’s diverse identity to life through intricate patterns and bold hues.
Adding to the evolution is the reinvented Nikkei Bar, now embodying an uber-cool aesthetic with a bold, expressive design. Maximalist details such as woven pendant lighting, patterned flooring, colour-drenched ceiling and neon tube lighting create a lively, highenergy space.
The refreshed terrace has also been uplifted with a more communal approach to outdoor dining. Lounge-style seating offers a relaxed, family-style atmosphere, all set against iconic skyline views – a perfect setting for sunset moments and shared meals by the shore.
The result is a vibrant, layered environment where art, design and cuisine come together to celebrate the culture, coast and creativity of Peru.
La Mar Doha by Gastón Acurio is now open, welcoming diners to experience its renewed energy and timeless culinary legacy. ✤
Want your kids to feel comfortable in any social situation? The St. Regis Doha has come up with The Etiquette Club, a unique programme that started as a one-off and has now been developed as an ongoing educational journey that helps youngsters develop a whole range of skills. We caught up with organiser and etiquette expert Emma Clark, to find out more.
So basically, what is the Etiquette Club?
The Etiquette Club is a uniquely crafted curriculum designed to enrich the lives of young students, aged four to 11 years, by equipping them with the essential skills of graceful communication, refined table manners and social confidence.
The young learners advance through Bronze, Silver, and Gold courses, culminating in a certification and award ceremony at The St. Regis Doha – an event celebrating their mastery of fine etiquette in a setting of timeless elegance. Each course is a two-and-a-half hour experience where they develop their skill set through engaging games and interactive lessons.
The Bronze course students begin their journey in a private cabana workshop, where they are introduced to the principles of poise, courtesy and international etiquette. They then transition to a real-world dining experience at Astor Grill, where they will put their newfound skills into practice, ordering from the Family Traditions menu, learning the nuances of table etiquette and perfecting the art of engaging conversations. Further progression and development through the Silver and Gold courses allows the students to fully submerse themselves in a world of etiquette from experiences such as afternoon tea at the Fauchon café to making a guest's bed in a suite to confidently being able to use chopsticks. After completing all three courses, students will receive exclusive invitations to The Etiquette Club events, including activities such as sushi making, creative workshops and open-air cinema experiences to continue their development and build self-confidence.
What has been the reception so far?
So far, we have seen a lot of interest and excellent feedback
from the children and parents. We have had nearly 50 students join since we started in November 2024. In general, the students want to continue their etiquette journey further and the parents have all seen a significant change in their child’s behaviour and attitude both at home and in other environments.
What gave you the idea for this, how did you spot the need?
My background is training adults within the luxury hospitality sector on etiquette and service excellence. I have an eight-year-old daughter who I have always shared my knowledge and experiences with. When I was still living in France, I started to take small groups of my daughter’s friends and ran small, intimate etiquette sessions – this is when The Etiquette Club started!
On moving to Doha, I was passionate to bring The Etiquette Club to the children of Qatar. Knowing the impact it had in France, I knew that this would be appreciated by the parents here who want to offer their children a different, unique experience – essential life skills that will support them in their journey and a lifetime of distinction. For over a century, St. Regis has been synonymous with sophistication and impeccable social grace, a legacy dating back to the legendary Caroline Astor, who defined the golden age of hospitality. The Etiquette Club reflects this legacy. The St Regis Doha saw the opportunity and supported the launch of the club in Doha. ✤

With its glittering skyline and world-renowned restaurants, there’s no shortage of hotspots and fan favourites around the city, but some places just quietly go about being brilliant without much fanfare. From quaint eateries to lesser-known cool corners and offbeat weekend spots, we’ve pulled together a range of under-the-radar hidden gems that deserve a little more love. Some you might know, others might surprise you – either way, they’re worth a look.
Head to the Amiri Diwan in the early morning or latish afternoon to enjoy the spectacle of the camel guards perched atop these magnificent beasts patrolling the area. Of course, their original function was protection but these days, they’re more symbolic and ceremonial and they make for a great picture opportunity. Approach from the Al Corniche and Al Asmakh St junction and make sure to keep a safe distance. GO: Visit www.diwan.gov.qa for more information.
If you’re visiting Al Shahaniya, make sure you don’t miss the leaning mosque. The 27-metre-tall structure leans at a remarkable 20º angle, with both the main building and the minaret tilting thanks to advanced structural engineering with deep foundations, multiple support piles and safety monitoring sensors.
Found in the Sheikh Faisal bin Qassim Al Thani Museum, the mosque was designed by Sheikh Faisal and constructed from locally-sourced white stone with colourful stained glass using eco-conscious construction methods.
The museum itself is also fascinating and definitely worth exploring.

Free-roaming horses will greet you as you reach Enk Farm at Wadi Al Jahiliya but, though they’re friendly and very sweet, the real stars of this show are more about horse power. That’s because the farm is home to a really cool classic car museum. Designed with a unique garage-style setup, the collection, which is owned by a private individual, includes the likes of a vintage Rolls-Royce and classic muscle cars alongside utility vehicles from bygone eras.
All the motors have been lovingly restored and you can even take a guided tour where you’ll learn about their history. There’s a café on site, so why not make a day of it. Open Fridays 11am to 9pm.

Family-owned Torba Farm, in Al Khor, is another great place to experience Qatar’s burgeoning sustainability drive. The brainchild of twins Mohammed and Fatma Al Khater, the farm specialises in sustainable agriculture, crafting 100% pure, therapeutic-grade botanical products. Here, you’ll not only find great organic foods in a farm-totable setting but also beauty products, oils and more. There are barefoot walks, yoga sessions, a cool natural pool to paddle in and so much more.
Torba is a haven for wildlife and organic production that’s built a community of enthusiasts and sustainable entrepreneurship.

If ethical, sustainable food production is your thing, you need to visit Heenat Salma Farm at Shahaniya, north-west of Doha. But, this is no ‘dull but worthy’ endeavour. Rather it’s a ‘uniquely nourishing space where visitors can come to rest, recharge and gather, enjoy farm-to-table experiences, participate in artisanal workshops and training [sessions] and explore ethical marketplaces.’
A project from the Caravane Earth Foundation, it’s pioneering eco-hospitality in the country offering wellness activities, vocational and educational training, classes with master craftspeople and cultural and community-building events. Visitors can go for the day or stay on site, in one of the seriously funky lodges.

If you want to try authentic Qatari food, then Al Jasra in Souq Waqif is the place to go. It offers home-style cooking and is run by a group of Qatari women. All the founders worked in other fields and cooked for family and friends before spotting a gap in the market and setting up shop. Everything’s cooked fresh with good quality ingredients, so the menu can be a little limited but you’ll find plenty of classic favourites such as madrooba, various types of machboos and the much-loved rogag.
There’s indoor and outdoor seating and the vibe is very much traditional, cosy Qatari home with local handicrafts on the walls and patterned fabric seating. But, you’ll also spot a modern plasma TV, often showing local camel racing. Unusually, the Qatari ladies also serve the food themselves, so you’ll get a real touch of local home-style hospitality. The menu is very reasonable and portion sizes generous but make sure you take cash. Look out for the signs in the souq to find it.
Everyone loves a shawarma, right? And we all have our own opinion on where to find the best ones. But, we asked around and Al Quds Sweets & Restaurant at Souq Al-Dira came out top on lots of people’s lists. The veggies and lettuce are fresh, the chicken’s tender and flavourful and the sauce is just creamy heaven. Plus the staff are lovely, it’s cheap as chips and they even do a great falafel too.
GO: Call 4441 3932 for more information.
You’ll have to wait a few months for this one as it’s a winter only destination but, trust us, it’s worth it. If you like your food ‘on the go’, head to Caravan Bay on Al Maha Island for a whole range of fancy food trucks serving everything from upmarket sweet treats to some of the best burgers and wings around. Every truck has its own dedicated seating area and the big bonus is the location, which enjoys a fab view of the Katara Towers across the water.

Qatar has plenty of live music venues but if you ask the actual musicians where they go, Bricks, at the New Blue Rose Hotel, is the answer. We caught up with Bassem Deaibess, one of the three brothers who run the club, to find out more.
FB says ‘jazz and blues club’ but also ‘The First Rock and Blues Club in Doha’ – is it safe to say live music venue with the emphasis on jazz, blues and rock?
Bricks is a dedicated live music venue – 100% focused on authentic performances. We do not feature DJs as part of our entertainment lineup, unless it's directly tied to rock music culture. And yes, we know Facebook says “Jazz and Blues Club” but that's just because they didn’t have a “K*****s Rock Bar” category. Jokes aside, it was the closest thing we could pick. But make no mistake: Bricks is all about live rock music. No DJs, no fluff, just real bands, real music. When we say rock, we mean everything from classic rock to metal, Blues to pop-rock, punk to hard rock. Even ska, reggae and Jazz find their way onto our stage. If it feels right and sounds good live, it belongs at Bricks.
How long has Bricks been going?
The Concept of Bricks was born around April 2024, initially it was a project which we took to existing bars and clubs, But when the right opportunity came knocking, we went all in. Bricks as a fullfledged ‘Rock Bar’ was born on the July 4, 2023.
Is there live music every night?
Most of the time, we’ve got live music happening every night,
THAT is the heart of Bricks. And yes, it’s the toughest part of the business, but it’s what makes us who we are. On the rare nights without a live act, we strive to have the music and the vibe that sets Bricks apart. We try to stay as authentic and true to our identity as possible. Instead of using the typical playlists common in Qatari nightlife, we curate a rock & roll-driven selection that fits the bar’s vibe and reflects our crowd’s taste. In the end, that’s what makes Bricks what it is.
Who are your regulars?
We get a real diverse crowd at Bricks. Our regulars are musicians and music enthusiasts, from rockers to bikers to metalheads and blues heads. But you'd be surprised how many business professionals drop by to relax and enjoy the vibes or conduct casual business meetings. We’ve had folks mention how they appreciate the atmosphere here. It’s interesting hearing customers say things like, ‘It’s not just a bar, it feels like a break from everything else’. We feel and hope that Bricks is becoming a community hub.
What are your opening hours?
We’re open daily from 5pm. Music until 2am, last call at 2.30am (as per Qatari law). Happy Hour from 5pm to 8pm, so come early and stay late!
GO: Visit @bricks.doha for more information.
Qatar’s comedy scene has a monthly residency – and it’s absolutely no joke!
The organisers of Stand-Up Comedy Qatar (SUCQ) told us: “If you’ve ever thought, ‘Qatar needs more comedy,’ congratulations – your wish has been granted. And no, we’re not talking about that one coworker who thinks PowerPoint jokes count.”
Thanks to SUCQ, the city now has two monthly comedy nights guaranteed to slap the seriousness right out of your schedule. The venue? The one-and-only Collector’s Café. Arabic Comedy Night runs on the second Friday of the month – coming up this month, on May 10, is the I’m funny in my mother tongue showcase.
English Comedy Night runs on the last Thursday of the month with the May 30 show promising puns, accents and a whole lot of ‘back home’ jokes.
The comedians come from all walks of life delivering punchlines inspired by life in Qatar and each show runs about two hours (or, according to SUCQ, roughly three shawarmas in comedy time), complete with a host who keeps the energy up and the awkward silences down. Expect local legends, rising stars and the occasional nervous first timer. The SUCQ crew members aren’t new to the game. With 14 years of performing under their belts – and having shared stages with the likes of Gabriel Iglesias and Maz Jobrani –they know how to bring the funny without crossing the line (Qatar-style).
They urge you to: “Ditch the group dinner you didn’t want to go to anyway and treat yourself to something actually entertaining. Because in a city that runs on AC, karak and road rage – a good laugh is basically therapy.”

A definite ‘in the know’ moment. The falcon hospital at Katara often has birds out on the grass during the day, though possibly during the cooler weather. If you stop by, the staff will regularly come out and untether one of their charges, brining a sleeve so you can actually hold one of these magnificent flyers. GO: Visit swfh.com for more information about the hospital’s work.
Each year hundreds of whale sharks congregate in the waters off northeast Qatar between April and September and, in groups, they are a sight to behold. While whale sharks are the biggest fish in the ocean, they are also one of the most gentle and majestic creatures you will find underwater. Until recently, the waters where they gather were closed to the public but carefully controlled whale shark watching tours are sometimes available, departing from Al Ruwais Port via catamaran. The boat heads out to sea where the fish come close to the surface to feed, making for great picture opportunities and a once-in-a-lifetime experience. This year’s excursions are yet to be announced. GO: Visit discoverqatar.qa for more information.
Nesting season for the critically endangered hawksbill sea turtles, which inhabit Qatari waters, runs from April to August and, while turtles can be seen on various beaches, the soft sand of Fuwairit Beach is a particularly popular nesting spot. In order to protect the tiny hatchlings, the Qatar Ministry of Environment generally closes an area of the beach to the public during the height of nesting season in early spring when the female lays her eggs.
During late summer, it’s possible to witness the hatchlings scurrying across the sand to reach the water and it’s a truly magical experience. Qatar Museums has previously organised private hatchling experiences but details of this year’s events have not yet been released.

FACT took the new Audi A5 40 S Line Sedan for a spin to discover a beautifully designed car that blends power, tech and comfort.
025 marks a new chapter in Audi's prosperous history. After 30 years of successful A4 production and sales, this world-renowned brand has sharpened the design of its much-loved saloon and is now launching it under the upgraded A5 series.
This month, FACT had the privilege of test-driving this fresh-faced formation, compliments of the team at Audi Qatar.
We have always loved the A4; however, the moment the completely redesigned A5 came into view, we applauded the upgrade. Firstly, the vehicle proportions have been clearly modified, with a longer wheelbase, large wheels and a low sporty body that defines first-class construction. The compact-looking greenhouse has been elegantly crafted, flowing seamlessly to the rear in a sweeping arc. The rear window has a coupéesque look, emphasised by the short yet stylish tailgate. An eye-catching spoiler lip adds an extra touch of athleticism. Staring at the saloon head-on, we could not miss the wide and significantly flatter proportioned Singleframe with its three-dimensional honeycomb structure. Complementing this flattering design element are the slim and visually appealing LED headlights that can be personalised with eight different designs, providing additional shape to the face of the A5. We also loved
how the bonnet has been expertly integrated into the bumper. Once at the back end, we took in the new rear hatch, which opened smoothly with the rear window, allowing easy access to the sizable 445-litre luggage compartment, a space that can be increased up to 1,299 litres with the rear seating folded flat – a brand-new saloon design concept for Audi.
The rear, three-dimensionally offset LED light strip endows the back end with real presence, telling everyone on the roads, “You've just been passed by the new A5”. A modern bumper design, complete with a dark diffuser and high-end rectangular exhaust tips, further amplifies the top-quality character of this creation.
We expected a classy and comfortable cabin in the new A5, yet we were still surprised by the human-centric design.
Boasting a generous sense of space, premium comfort levels and high-end materials throughout, the A5 ticks all the first-class boxes one would expect from Audi. What impressed us most was the clear layout and easy operation of the interior, as everything seemed to be geared towards the needs of the occupants.
Tech-wise, this sporty saloon houses a new operating concept that increased interaction with the vehicle thanks to the E³ (Endto-End Electronic Architecture). Its core elements are five highperformance computers, which Audi calls High Computing
Performance (HCP). They cover all vehicle functions – from the drivetrain and assistance systems to the infotainment and comfort systems to the safety systems and back-end networking. We found the Digital Stage to be extraordinary. It features a slim, free-standing Audi MMI panoramic display with a curved design and OLED technology. It comprises the Audi virtual cockpit with an 11.9-inch visible screen diagonal and a 14.5-inch MMI touch display. Furthermore, our test drive model contained the optional 10.9-inch MMI front passenger display, which was perfectly integrated into the dashboard design.
The new panoramic glass roof consists of six segments that can be made either transparent or non-transparent. You can decide yourself via the MMI touch display at which point the sun can enter. Having inspected so many vehicles over the years, we always love discovering something new. Audi delivered on this. The A5 has a configurable head-up display that has been further developed compared to its predecessor. It was the first time we have been able to control vehicle and infotainment functions via the head-up display. A truly novel experience for us seasoned test drivers.
Audi has delivered a fresh powertrain for the new A5. This construction consists of the new MHEV plus system based on a 48-volt on-board electrical system. It supports a 2.0-litre, fourcylinder combustion engine that produces a maximum output of 150hp and a maximum torque of 280Nm.
The moment we engaged the ignition, the sound of the capable powertrain roared into action. Gently applying weight to the accelerator, we could feel the available capacity waiting to be called forth.
Cruising casually in this front-wheel drive, we could feel the cornering and braking abilities of the new A5 to be top-notch. Combined with the suspension system, this setup was an exceptionally comfortable ride. Audi has clearly developed the suspension to ensure the A5 offers precise, effortless and largely neutral handling.
Once at our test site, we pressed the pedal to the metal, pushing the 2.0-litre engine to its limits. We managed to smoothly power the new A5 from 0-100km/h in a respectable 9.8 seconds. This seductive saloon also offers a top speed of 214km/h.
Another aspect of this powertrain that impressed us was the PTG, which can add up to 18kW of electric power to the overall output of the combustion engine. When decelerating, the PTG feeds energy back into the battery (recuperation) at up to 25kW. Needless to say, Audi has included an array of safety and driver assistance systems to ensure the well-being of you and your loved ones whilst out on the roads.
In the new A5, Audi has provided high levels of comfort, performance, safety and technology that are sure to stand out in the upper mid-sized saloon segment. ✤

The most powerful Rolls-Royce ever has arrived in Qatar and enthusiasts got the chance to experience it in a special event at Lusail International Circuit.
Black Badge Spectre made its Doha debut through an effortless and commanding demonstration on the racetrack.
The Black Badge, the marque’s alter ego amplified, boasts bold exteriors, vivid interiors and limitless Bespoke potential made for the boldest and most audacious clients. With an unprecedented 1,075Nm of torque and 659hp power output, it stands as the most powerful Rolls-Royce ever.
Two advanced powertrain innovations mirror the burst-power capabilities of the legendary Merlin engine. Infinity Mode unlocks the full 659hp output for an immediate, heightened throttle response. While Spirited Mode, engaged while stationary, delivers an instant acceleration surge, propelling the car from 0-96km/h in just 4.1 seconds.
To ensure drivers fully harness Black Badge Spectre’s power, RollsRoyce engineers refined the chassis for enhanced confidence and control. Increased steering weight and adjusted roll stabilisation improve feedback and reduce body-roll during cornering, while enhanced dampers optimise body control, minimising ‘squatting’ under acceleration or deceleration. These revisions perfectly balance an enhanced sense of engagement with the effortless operation and fêted Magic Carpet Ride associated with Rolls-Royce motor cars.
Black Badge Spectre debuts in Vapour Violet, a deep black-violet inspired by 1980s' and 1990s' club culture. A contrasting Iced Black bonnet adds a bold statement, with clients able to choose from 44,000 colours or create a Bespoke hue in collaboration with Rolls-Royce designers.
The 23-inch five-spoke forged aluminium wheels, available in partpolished or all-black finishes, reflect the car’s technical sophistication. Signature darkened brightwork, including the Pantheon Grille, Spirit of Ecstasy and double ‘R’ Badge of Honour, reinforces Black Badge Spectre’s subversive, noir identity.✤

The Restaurant Manager of Twisted Olive Doha shares things to try, pride in her team and her favourite Qatar adventures.
We last chatted around two and a half years ago and there have been several developments at Twisted Olive since then. Can you please bring us up to date on what’s been happening over the last couple of years?
A lot has happened at Twisted Olive over the past couple of years, and we’re excited to bring you up to speed. One of the biggest milestones has been the birth of NAMAA'S GARDEN – a truly unique concept in the heart of West Bay.
Tucked between the city’s iconic skyline and offering a breathtaking sea view, it’s a serene escape that no one saw coming. What began as a bold idea has quickly turned into a landmark, now recognised across the GCC for its charm, ambience and originality.
Meanwhile, Twisted Olive has continued to thrive. We’re proud to say we’ve been awarded the title for the Best Breakfast in Doha several times – and we’ve worked hard to keep it that way.
When it comes to pizza, we don’t just serve it – we stand by it. I can confidently challenge anyone! And if that’s not enough, our unique South African-style barbecue has brought something totally fresh to the scene and has become a favourite among both regulars and first-timers.
To top it all off, our weekends are bringing the energy: Friday evenings come alive with a Cuban vibe, full of rhythm and flavour, while Saturday brunches feature a DJ spinning the perfect soundtrack for a laid-back, vibrant afternoon.
And, having caught up, what can your guests expect over the coming months, any new offers, menu updates or other news you can share?
We’ve got lots of exciting things coming up – some I can share and some surprises I have to keep under wraps for now, But I can tell you this: there are big changes on the way, both to the venue and the menu. So definitely stay tuned – there’s a lot to look forward to!
You’ve previously mentioned the importance of teamwork at Twisted Olive. How do you go about recruiting new team members, what are the qualities you look for to ensure they fit in and how does your management style encourage an uplifting team spirit?
At Twisted Olive, teamwork isn’t just a value – it’s the foundation of our success. I’m proud to say I have the best team in Doha, and I’m very careful when it comes to hiring. For me, it’s not just about experience – it’s about energy, honesty and the desire to grow.
I look for people who genuinely want to work, who are open to learning and who bring a little bit of craziness – the good kind that helps complete the Twisted Olive puzzle.
It’s well known that I’m not your ‘normal’ manager. If you join my team, I will train you, I will push you, I will teach you – and you will become the best at what you do. I’m Greek, which means yes, I talk loudly. But it also means you’ll find a hug and a family away from your own.
My management style is all about building people up. I create an environment where passion is celebrated, effort is recognised and team spirit is everything. When people feel like they belong, they shine – and when they shine, the whole team thrives.
The Twisted Olive menu is extensive. If you had to choose just one item to eat every day, what would it be and why?
Short ribs pizza – try it and you’ll know why.
You’re a veteran of many years in Qatar now. If you have guests come to visit, what are the ‘must see’ things you always recommend they experience?
First on the list is NAMAA'S GARDEN by Twisted Olive – it’s a beautiful spot that represents the diversity and natural essence of Qatar. And after all, that’s my heart and baby.
Next, a must-see is Souq Waqif, where you can truly see and feel the tradition of Qatar. The atmosphere, the scents, the energy –there’s nothing quite like it.
And last, walk along the Corniche, especially at sunset, it always leaves a lasting impression. ✤
What first drew you to the hospitality industry and has it lived up to your expectations?
My journey in hospitality began with a fascination for creating memorable experiences for people. I was drawn to the dynamic nature of the industry – every day brings new faces, challenges and opportunities to exceed expectations. What particularly attracted me was the perfect blend of operational excellence, people management and the art of service. After more than 25 years in the industry, I can say it has exceeded my expectations. The satisfaction of seeing guests leave with smiles, watching team members grow professionally and continuously evolving with changing market demands has been incredibly rewarding. The hospitality industry has also given me a global perspective and allowed me to work with diverse teams across multiple countries, enriching both my professional and personal life
Aside from your native Türkiye, you’ve spent much of your working life in Doha. What attracted you to the Middle East and Qatar in particular?
Qatar represents an exciting intersection of tradition and innovation that I find fascinating. I was initially attracted by the country's ambitious vision for growth in the hospitality sector and its emergence as a global destination. What kept me here was the unique opportunity to be part of this remarkable development journey. Qatar's commitment to excellence in hospitality, coupled with its strategic focus on tourism through major events like the FIFA World Cup, created an environment where hospitality professionals could truly make an impact. The multicultural aspect of Doha, where you work alongside people from all corners of the world, provides a rich professional experience that's hard to find elsewhere. Additionally, I appreciate the balance between modern luxury and cultural authenticity that defines hospitality in Qatar.
You’ve been with Millennium Place almost a year, what have been the greatest challenges and what would you say have been your major achievements in that time?
Joining Millennium Place Doha midway through 2024 during the pre-opening phase presented unique challenges. The greatest challenge was establishing operational excellence and building a strong team culture from the ground up, while ensuring we met our launch standards. Another significant challenge was positioning the property effectively in a competitive market while we were still establishing our brand presence. In terms of achievements, I'm particularly proud of our rapid progress in guest satisfaction, achieving strong scores in our first few months of operation through the implementation of a comprehensive service excellence programme. We've exceeded our financial targets, delivering better profitability than projected for a pre-opening year, which demonstrates our team's ability to deliver on all fronts. Additionally, we've successfully positioned our food and beverage (F&B) outlets as destinations not just for hotel guests but for Doha residents as well. The fact that we received nine nominations across our four outlets at the Fact Dining Awards in our very first year of operation is remarkable proof that our restaurants are delivering exceptional service and
culinary experiences. We've also built a cohesive team culture that embraces our vision of creating memorable experiences for every guest, which is crucial for a new property
Are there any upcoming offers or new initiatives at the hotel that you can share with our readers?
We're excited to announce that our My Millennium loyalty programme has been renewed and become much more appealing and generous. We've enhanced the rewards structure to provide even greater value to our loyal guests, so I encourage everyone to enrol and start earning rewards immediately. The programme now offers more personalised experiences and faster reward accumulation.
We're also expanding our sustainability efforts with a comprehensive programme that will significantly reduce our environmental footprint while enhancing the guest experience. On the culinary front, we'll be unveiling a new concept at one of our restaurants that showcases local ingredients with international techniques.
We're planning a series of cultural events that will give our guests authentic experiences that connect them with Qatari heritage and the contemporary arts scene. I'd encourage everyone to follow our social media pages to stay updated on all our latest offerings, special promotions and exclusive deals. Our social media channels are where we share real-time updates about events, dining specials and limited-time offers. These initiatives reflect our commitment to providing unique, memorable experiences that go beyond traditional hotel stays.
If you could swap jobs with someone in the hotel for a day, who would it be and why?
I would definitely choose to swap with our Executive Chef. I've had a personal interest in the culinary arts since my teenage years, and cooking has always been a passion of mine. For me, cooking is like rehabilitation – it's therapeutic and calming. There's something special about cooking with nice music playing in the background, especially when preparing meals for family or friendly gatherings.
I love watching the expressions on people's faces when they taste food that I've cooked with love – that moment when their eyes light up with the first bite is priceless. While I lead the hotel from a management perspective, I'd love to experience the creative process in our kitchen firsthand, understanding the challenges our culinary team faces daily, and perhaps even contributing some of my own recipes. The kitchen is truly where art meets hospitality, and I'd be fascinated to see our operation from that perspective for a day.
What is your favourite part of your job and how would you describe your leadership style?
My favourite part of the job is witnessing the growth and development of my team members. There's nothing more rewarding than seeing someone progress from potential to excellence, knowing you played a role in their journey. I also love the moments when we exceed a guest's expectations so dramatically that you can literally see their perception transform.
My leadership style is best described as hands-on and empowering. I believe in setting clear expectations and a compelling vision, then giving my team the tools, training and autonomy to achieve those goals. I lead by example, never asking my team to do something I wouldn't do myself. I prioritise open communication and creating an environment where honesty and innovation are encouraged. I believe in recognising excellence publicly while coaching privately, and I make decisions based on a balance of data and intuition. Ultimately, my leadership philosophy centres on the belief that if we take exceptional care of our team, they will take exceptional care of our guests.
Lastly, on a more personal note, is there a secret bucket list item or talent that our readers would be surprised to know about you?
Many might be surprised to know that I'm an avid motorcycle enthusiast who has been exploring cities and countries on two wheels for over 20 years. There's something incredibly freeing about discovering new landscapes, cultures and people through motorcycle journeys, which I share through my social media under #IamJustRiding.
I'm also a certified PADI scuba diver, though this is actually a relatively new hobby for me. It's something I had been postponing for years. When I used to live and work in Marmaris, Türkiye, every summer I wanted to try scuba diving but there was always an excuse to skip or postpone this adventure. Finally, I made up my mind to just do it, and I'm so glad I did. I'm still new to it but I'm a quick learner, and I've been documenting these underwater adventures with #IamJustDiving.
These passions have taught me valuable life lessons that translate to my professional approach – the importance of careful planning combined with adaptability when things change, maintaining calm under pressure and appreciating the beauty in different perspectives.
Here's something I haven't told anyone yet – my ultimate bucket list item and secret dream is to complete a round-the-world motorcycle journey between the ages of 50 and 55. I want to explore the world on two wheels, connecting multiple countries and cultures and documenting the diverse hospitality traditions I encounter along the way. Chef Mauro Colagreco, the culinary master behind MURU Qatar, talks circular gastronomy, elemental celebration and a favourite dish.
You are known for your garden- or farm-to-table concepts, especially in your Mirazur restaurant. Is this something you and your team are trying to replicate in Qatar and, if so, how do you deal with the challenges that it presents?
Our circular gastronomy concept is present in all our establishments and the events we organise. For us, beyond the constraints that each place imposes on us, it is a question of using our knowledge but above all our imagination and creativity, to succeed in expressing this concept. It's about sowing our seed!
At MURU, we always work with this principle of excellence in products and care in relation to origin. We have carried out research to be as close as possible to our desires.
We highlight natural cooking, fermentation and maturation techniques that are the basis of a sustainable approach and the enhancement of all products. It is also a question of drawing attention to traditions and know-how that are ancestral and that it is a priority to perpetuate.
MURU is said to be a celebration of the four life-giving elements: fire, water, earth and air. How are they integrated into the menu?
MURU, means ‘the seed of creation’ in the language of the Andean peoples, the Quechuas. It is a concept that symbolises the creation and perpetual cycle of ecosystems, embodying the essence of life and interconnectedness.
For this reason, we decided to offer a celebration of the four elements that give life: fire, water, earth and air. These elements are integrated into both the menu and the interior design through four different areas within the restaurant, to provide a holistic dining experience that transcends the ordinary.
Fire is represented by the exploration of eight types of fire and the use of smoke for different cooking techniques in the main open kitchen.
Water is represented by a large block of sculpted ice and the presence of a crudo bar for the preparation of fresh fish. There, we offer creations such as the signature ceviche, prawn rolls and fresh catch tiraditos, tartares and more. Earth is introduced in our mixed drinks section with harmonious pairings and inventive mixology techniques. We have various drinks, aromatic infusions and non-alcoholic creations. Our incredible bartenders transform fresh fermented fruits and vegetables into unique mocktails... It's the art of ‘cooking’ cocktails; some take up to 48 hours to achieve the perfect balance! Finally, air is explored as our grand dessert finale! The idea of lightness as the ultimate indulgence!
Mirazur sets incredibly high standards, holding three Michelin stars and having been named the best restaurant in the world on more than one occasion. How do you maintain this level of quality and innovation with your empire that spans the globe?
The key is to succeed in forming a good team. For each opening and new concept, we invest a lot in research on the place, the local producers, the culture. The people who are in charge of opening and training the local teams
are people trained at Mirazur and, in most cases, they are people who have worked in our restaurant, especially for the kitchen part. Cooking is above all a team effort; to run a restaurant, it is not only about being a good cook, it is above all about being able to inspire and lead our teams
What is MURU's signature plate, how was it developed and what makes it popular?
It's hard to choose, you could say that there are two big poles of attraction around the fire and the different types of cooking and the Crudo Bar and the processing of the fish.
But, if I had to choose one dish, it would be our mango ceviche, it is really exquisite and very harmonious in flavours, a refined blend of sweetness and spiciness, crafted to perfection.
Apart from the restaurant, is there anything you are looking forward to seeing or doing during your stay in Qatar?
When I travel to Qatar for MURU at Waldorf Astoria West Bay, my time is quite limited. I take the opportunity to discover more of the local specialities, visit the hinterland to immerse myself in the culture, meet the local producers... And it's true that the hotel and the facilities are so beautiful that I take the opportunity to relax and make the most of this time.
I hope I will have time to visit the current LATINOAMERICANO Exhibition at the National Museum of Qatar as I am very fond of art! ✤
Gaurav Prakash, Executive Pastry Chef, JW Marriott Marquis City Center Doha, talks passion, collaboration and making a traditional dish his own.
Who or what inspired you to pursue the sweeter side of kitchen life and what is it about pastry and baking that attracts you?
My entry into the world of pastry was both unexpected and transformative. Having completed my degree in Hotel Management and gained hands-on culinary experience, my initial ambition was to specialise in Indian cuisine. With this goal in mind, I moved to Delhi, full of anticipation and determination to refine my skills in that domain.
However, during an interview that I believed would lead to a position in an Indian kitchen, I had the privilege of meeting Chef Ranveer Brar. Rather than assigning me to a traditional role, he extended an invitation to explore the chocolate room – an environment that was entirely unfamiliar to me. Intrigued, I accepted a two-week trial. That decision marked the beginning of an entirely new chapter in my culinary career.
What started as a temporary exploration quickly evolved into a profound passion, one that was nurtured and shaped by my
mentor, Chef Saurabh Shahi. He revealed to me that pastry is not merely about precision or technique – it is an expressive art form. It allows for emotion, creativity and storytelling, all translated through flavour, form and detail.
Now, as the pastry chef overseeing the entire pastry and bakery programme at JW Marriott Marquis City Center Doha, I have the opportunity to bring that philosophy to life across all our outlets. Among them, La Maison Martinez, our signature patisserie, has become a particularly special canvas for creativity. It’s where the craft of pastry meets storytelling, and where we invite guests to experience afternoon tea and desserts as more than just indulgence.
You’re known for fusing modern techniques with timeless flavours and creating desserts that look beautiful while also telling a story. How do you achieve this and can you give us an example?
The foundation of my approach lies in respecting tradition while
reimagining it through a contemporary lens. I believe that classic flavours – such as citrus, vanilla, chocolate and nuts – carry a sense of nostalgia. They are comforting and familiar, evoking memories that are deeply personal to each guest.
What I strive to do is retain those timeless flavour profiles while presenting them in a way that surprises and delights. Modern techniques become tools for reinterpretation – whether through texture, temperature or visual form. Each element plays a role in the narrative I’m trying to convey.
One example that stands out is my take on the traditional lemon meringue. Rather than presenting it in its conventional form, I reimagine the dish by transforming the lemon curd into a light mousse, enclosing it in a delicate sphere and pairing it with brûléed meringue shards and citrus gel. The flavours are recognisable, yet the format elevates the experience into something unexpected.
What’s the biggest event you’ve ever catered and how did you rise to this challenge?
The most notable event I’ve had the honour of leading was the catering for the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2024, held at Education City Stadium. It was a defining moment for our team at JW Marriott Marquis, as it marked our debut in large-scale sports catering at an international level.
Over seven match days, we catered to between 1,200 and 1,500 guests daily, adhering to strict protocols set forth by both the Ministry and the event’s organising committee. Every aspect –logistics, setup, transportation and service – was meticulously planned and executed.
To meet this challenge, we conducted an in-depth case study based on FIFA’s catering framework, tailoring our approach to
meet both compliance and quality standards. We developed a comprehensive operational plan that encompassed everything from sustainable sourcing and allergen labelling to food safety, hygiene training and temperature-controlled delivery infrastructure. Collaboration was key – across supply chains, departments, and service teams. Waste management was also a priority, with accurate forecasting and portion control playing a crucial role in minimising excess. The experience was intense, but ultimately rewarding. It tested our capabilities and showcased what is possible when a team operates with unity, precision and purpose.
Your signature dish is the Basque Cake, please tell us how it was developed and what makes it popular?
The Basque Cake is a dessert that holds great personal significance for me. There is something inherently comforting about its rustic appearance and rich, custard-like centre, enveloped in a caramelised, burnished crust. I was initially drawn to its understated elegance – its ability to be both indulgent and honest.
Wanting to make it my own, I began experimenting with subtle flavour enhancements. After much refinement, I introduced a gentle infusion of blue cheese and fresh rosemary from our JW Garden. The result was a harmonious balance: the earthiness of the rosemary and the depth of the blue cheese added complexity without overpowering the original essence of the cake.
At La Maison Martinez, this cake has become a popular choice among guests, appreciated for its subtle balance of flavours. It’s not overly sweet, which makes it approachable for a variety of palates, and it pairs well with a cup of coffee or tea. Its slightly cracked top and golden finish reflect its handcrafted nature. It’s a simple, thoughtful dessert that highlights both technique and care. ✤
SD discovers a cosy ambience coupled with classic flavours on a visit
Set in the vast expanse of Marsa Malaz Kempinski,
The Pearl - Doha, Harry's Dolce Vita Doha promises an exceptional and sophisticated Italian dining experience and tonight we are putting it to the test.
The entrance is breathtaking enough for an unforgettable start to the night and as soon as we enter, we are mesmerised by the opulent interiors. There's charm, there's luxury, there's incredible art everywhere we look.
The brown leather couches give a warm feel and add an elevated touch to an already elegant space. Despite its contemporary feel and modern aesthetics, it's hard not to notice how cosy the restaurant feels.
Colourful, modern artworks mixed with greyscale portraits adorn the walls. The space feels well thought out with picture frames that are not overbearing and brilliantly blend with the surroundings. Dim lights create a romantic ambience and this feels like the perfect intimate dinner spot.
There's an open entertainment area on one side and an al fresco dining space on the other. The weather tonight is rather pleasant, so we're happy to dine outdoors.
The chef passes by and introduces himself and on first interaction, we're confident he knows his way around the kitchen. Our server starts us off with some drinks and a few recommendations. He promises us the best of the menu and we're happy to let him take the reins. Harry's Persian Iced Tea is noteworthy, served in a rose gold tumbler and crowned with fresh mint. Then cute plates with quirky stemmed flowers are placed on the table alongside stylish cutlery and the server brings out a plate of Calamari Fritti, Truffle Arancini Balls and a twirl of truffle Tagliolini that smells like pure indulgence.
The crispy, polenta-coated squid is not greasy at all and pairs well with a light garlic aioli on the side, enough to lift the flavour without overpowering the light seafood bite. We take a nibble of the arancini, and a burst of truffle notes in the deep-fried rice takes over in the best way. Generous amounts of parmesan shavings melt on top.
Harry's signature antipasti is the tagliolini, a feather light spaghettistyle pasta tossed with parmesan, cream and truffle. It sounds simple but a just a few ingredients bring together an incredible complexity in flavour, while still managing to keep it light enough for an appetiser. We really did save the best for last. But last of just the first course, to be clear. The mains haven't even started yet and from the chef's introduction, we're convinced some strong candidates are going to battle it out for favourite at our table.
The pizza menu at Harry's is very promising. The hand-stretched dough is proofed for 72 hours and then served in the form of an incredibly decadent looking variant named Rosso. One bite and the lightness of the crust is impressive. We immediately feel a tingle on our tongues from the spicy pepperoni but there are so many fresh flavours to balance it out. A magical medley of the finest Italian ingredients includes schiacciata piccante, red onion, roasted peppers and black olives enhanced with rocket and wild oregano on top. This pizza is an experience in itself and one we'd exclusively come back for.
We really don't want to be distracted, but an absolute banger
makes an entrance – Harry's Spaghetti Seafood. It's telling that spaghetti appears first in the name before the seafood, and rightly so. The spaghetti isn't just the vessel for the seafood but complements it and happily shares the crown with marinated and cooked prawns, squid, clams and mussels. No second fiddles here, every component is a star in its own right.
A chicken dish for main would hardly be our preference at an Italian restaurant. But the Truffled Chicken in the Secondi menu calls for an exception. This roast half-chicken is generously doused in a rich, creamy mascarpone truffle sauce with sauteed mushrooms. The fungi add those familiar earthy flavours and while one can never go wrong with a mushroom-truffle combination, there is something impeccable about its treatment here. Every bite feels like a treat. It almost feels like the chef crafted this exclusively for us, just once, as a grand gesture. Luckily, it's on the menu, so every time we crave a bit of pampering, we know the Truffled Chicken sits right here in Harry's Dolce Vita. We can't leave without trying Harry's signature Tiramisu, which our server claims is the best in Doha. Flawlessly constructed inside a bowl wrapped with a serviette and a gold ring, it is simply but stylishly presented. The coffee-soaked ladyfingers are delicately meshed under layers of creamy mascarpone. The cocoa dusting adds a spot of balanced bitterness convincing us that this is indeed one of the best Tiramisus in the city. After a light yet indulgent sweet affair, we're ready to wrap up the night. How is any Italian fine-dining experience ever going to top this? We aren't too worried about that. If we're ever in the mood for an impeccable night out, we know exactly where to reserve our table. ✤
AMS discovered ‘great craic’ and even better food during an evening at The Irish Harp.
The Irish Harp gave us all of those feelings. It was familiar, homely with warm lighting and polished wood throughout. Red leather seating and exposed brick walls gave it a traditional feel. An entertainment bar ran along the entire length of the building and stools were lined up neatly in front of it. In the far corner, we spied leather booths, each one with soft candlelight, encouraging diners to take a seat. Also, there was a section of large wooden barrels, being used as high tables. Everything exuded a definite sense of old-world charm.
A Warm Welcome
Kevin, the new manager, was the first person to greet us. He made us feel really welcome and, as we chatted, it dawned on us that we hadn’t visited for some time. Given that we are originally from Ireland, it felt good to be back. Kevin showed us to our seats and left momentarily to find Chef Rama.
Trained in Italy, Chef Rama was full of enthusiasm and clearly proud of his creations. He explained it was a completely new menu. We were among the first to sample its delights – a great privilege. There was a range of enticing Irish classics. Fish and chips, Dublin Bay prawns and even a trending spice bag. Throughout the menu, an Italian influence shone through, from saffron risotto to Milanese veal chops.
First up, a huge slice of flavour in the form of a New England seafood chowder. This was an indulgent bowl packed with prawns, scallops, fish and mussels. The sweetness of the
seafood came through beautifully. Astonishingly, each type of fish was perfectly cooked. Often, when you place different types of proteins in a bowl of steaming broth, some are overcooked and mushy while others become tough. In this instance, Chef Rama pulled off some kind of culinary alchemy. Every bite was perfect. The creamy base was so moreish and the crusty bread served alongside was perfect for what the Italians call 'Scarpetta' – mopping up every last spoonful.
Paired with the chowder was a smoked salmon salad, which was clean and well-balanced. After the heavy, creamy dish, it almost cleansed the palate. Delicate slices of Norwegian salmon sat alongside capers, boiled eggs and crunchy salad leaves. Everything was brought together with a tart horseradish dressing that added just the right amount of zing.
With our appetites well and truly whetted, we moved on to a real crowd-pleaser – the duet of sliders. One was a homemade chicken patty, bursting with flavour, while the other was juicy beef. The chicken one came topped with Emmental cheese and sat on a charcoal bun. The beef came on a brioche bun and was complemented by a sharp cheddar. With a side of crisp French fries, this dish was perfect for sharing.
An unexpected twist arrived in the form of the soul food staple, chicken and waffles. All the elements showed care and precision. The chicken was satisfyingly crispy on the outside, giving way to tender white flesh. The waffles also had a perfectly crisp exterior, sufficient to support the toppings without becoming soggy. Chef had added some wasabi mayo for gentle heat and also a drizzle
of maple syrup for sweetness. Even though we were both feeling full, we couldn't stop going back for 'just one more bite'. As we reclined and took in the atmosphere, the energy in the room began to shift. The house band was setting up and sound checking on the small stage. The keyboardist did a few warm-up runs and then the guitarist took his turn, with a few tasty blues licks. At the same time, lots of people joined us in the dining area as they began settling in for the evening’s entertainment.
Our attention quickly shifted back to our table, however, with the arrival of slow-cooked beef ribs. The meat was visibly fall-apart tender. The fat had rendered down to a soft, jelly-like texture. Juicy individual strands of rib meat fell away effortlessly when I dug in with my fork. The flavour was rich and unctuous and, despite being stuffed to the gills, I couldn’t stop eating. I defy anyone to even try and leave a single bite. It’s impossible. As if we weren’t spoiled enough, Chef also sent a splendid grilled seafood platter. The sheer volume of fish was astounding. It contained salmon, squid, mussels, scallops, shrimp and tiny potatoes. Again, each piece was grilled to just the right point. The salmon was soft and flaky and the pan-fried squid had just the right amount of bite. The saffron cream accompaniment
was decadent without being overpowering, allowing the natural flavours and the char of the grill to shine through.
To round off the evening, we couldn’t resist the baked cheesecake. The filling sat on a crumbly biscuit base and was amazingly light. It came with a punchy mixed berry sorbet that cut through the richness. We also tried the molten chocolate cake, a must-have item for chocoholics like us. As we dived in, we were met with a silky, molten centre that oozed onto the plate. The resulting lava flow meshed with the cooling vanilla ice cream – a welcome contrast to the powerful chocolate.
How can we sum up our experience? For those that understand Irish, it was ‘great craic!’ This is quite simply the most refined pub grub you can find in Doha. The menu and food quality stand shoulder to shoulder with all of the leading restaurants in the city. Would I go back for more? In an instant. Would I recommend it to others? Without hesitation. Do yourself a favour: book a table and see for yourself. ✤
AMS headed to Bentley’s Grill at Radisson Blu Hotel, Doha, to experience timeless elegance coupled with outstanding flavours.
When you get an invite to what might be Doha’s best-known steakhouse, you clear the diary.
Bentley’s Grill is the OG. It's the epitome of tradition, refinement and fine dining in Doha.
Decked out in dark wood panelling, it felt like we were entering a private members' club. The restaurant itself was filled with large, soft leather chairs. Pristine white tablecloths adorned the tables and hanging above were enormous golden chandeliers, which added a touch of decadence. My wife also immediately noticed the romantic, single red roses in vases.
The classic, elegant styling extended to the formal place setting. There were glasses for each type of beverage and forks, knives and napkins. Everything had its place and was just so. Melanie met us with a smile as we walked in and helped settle us into our seats. As if by magic, a basket of warm bread arrived. Alongside, there were three intriguingly flavoured butters –jalapeño, roasted bell pepper and tangy goat cheese. I loved them all but was particularly impressed by the punchy jalapeño that woke up my taste buds.
This was immediately followed by a lovely gesture – a complimentary amuse bouche. The dainty pot contained creamy cauliflower mousse topped with a mango purée. It was smooth and light, with a subtle earthiness.
Our starters didn’t take long to arrive. The scallop cake came first. It was everything you’d want it to be – golden on the outside with a soft, meaty centre. I thoroughly enjoyed downing each bite with generous dollops of beurre blanc and even managed
to squeeze on some mushroom and spinach for good measure. The beetroot-cured salmon gravlax, by comparison, looked almost too pretty to eat. I felt guilty tearing apart the ribbons of pink and dredging them in the horseradish cream. Nothing, though, could have prepared us for the indulgent lobster bisque. The rich broth was perfectly balanced with a soothing dollop of crème fraîche. The only thing stopping me from lifting the bowl and chugging it like a Neanderthal was the glare radiating from my wife. It was divine. In life, it’s often the small details that make the difference. Bentley’s is all about these details. While we relaxed, our helpful waitress swept crumbs from the table with quiet precision, clearing the way for more dishes to come.
Before the mains, Executive Chef Wolfgang Goedl stopped by to ask how everything was. We spoke about the restaurant's consistent delivery and its elevated approach to fine dining. The chef explained how Bentley’s sticks to classic techniques and timeless dishes.
As he returned to the kitchen, our mains arrived on a serving trolley. To complement the beautiful steak, there was an equally beautiful steak knife from Forge de Laguiole. As a knife enthusiast, this important detail was not lost on me.
Steaks and More
And what an amazing job they did with the Wagyu ribeye. It had the perfect sear and, as I cut in, revealed flesh that was pink from top to bottom. The layers of natural fat had been rendered to deliver deep, buttery flavour. Dipping it in the chimichurri sauce raised it to another level. We had to remind ourselves to stop making noises as we ate. The mantra, ‘Mmmmmm!’, was repeated at least 10 times.
The mushroom-crusted lamb loin seemed the ideal pairing for the beef. It was all about textures. Outside, it was caked in a crisp topping that offered a satisfying crunch. Once we bit in, we were rewarded with pink and juicy meat. The whole affair was sitting on top of the creamiest polenta we’ve ever tasted. A smattering of sundried tomatoes ensured the dish looked as good as it tasted. For a lighter option, we chose the sea bass and scallops. The scallops were soft and plump, with perfectly caramelised edges. The fish flaked effortlessly under our forks. The pool of saffron sauce was a subtle addition that enhanced both without overwhelming them.
Our side dishes, which were also ridiculously tasty, seemed determined to try and steal the limelight. The gratin was insanely good. Layers of thinly sliced potato and cheese joined forces in an amazing combination. The onion rings were feather-light and our Yorkshire puddings were crisp on the outside with fluffy interiors – the perfect vehicles for soaking up gravy.
To signal the end of our main courses, a little surprise pre-dessert made its way to our table. Made from frozen berries and warm white chocolate sauce, it fizzed and crackled in the cup. This didn’t deter us from sampling two more items from the dessert
menu – avocado chocolate mascarpone cheesecake and raspberry pavlova. The cheesecake enticed us with the promise of something slightly unusual. We weren't disappointed. The avocado added a smoothness that played well against the slight bitterness of the chocolate. The sharp berry compote cut through with a welcome touch of sharpness. The pavlova was light and delicate, by comparison. The meringue was reassuringly chewy in the centre and, on several occasions, occupied our mouths to the extent that we couldn’t speak. The whipped Namelaka cream, glossy vanilla sauce and pistachio ice cream on the side were the perfect accompaniments. Amid the array of fusion restaurants springing up throughout the country, Bentley’s stands as a pillar of tradition. The classic approach to cooking and range of much-loved dishes offers a familiar and reassuring dining experience. High-end ingredients are combined to create time-honoured flavours, in a refined and elegant setting. Service is prompt but never overbearing; the staff exude a quiet confidence in the sheer quality of their product and everyone knows exactly what they’re doing. If you want to be spoiled, and love the finer things in life, you can’t get any better than Bentley’s Grill. ✤

AMS indulged in an upmarket pizza feast on a visit to Cecconi’s.
Is there a better way to spend a Friday afternoon in Doha than lost in jazz and the scent of wood-fired dough?
The Ned Doha certainly makes a strong case.
The midday sun spilled through tall windows and danced across the polished marble floor as we arrived. Cecconi’s sat quietly to the right of the grand vaulted lobby, as if observing the comings and goings of families drifting past towards the pool. Inside, the space was warm and intimate –mid-century Italian glamour brought to life with deep teal velvet chairs, marble-topped tables, dark wood panelling and softly glowing lamps. A gleaming bar stood at the centre, framed by gold accents and lit from above by vintage chandeliers that cast a soft glow across the room.
Amine, the Assistant Director of Food & Beverage, greeted us with warm enthusiasm. His calm confidence, paired with a genuine charm, set the tone from the start. Attentive without being overbearing, he orchestrated the experience with the ease of a seasoned maître d’. It was also thanks to him that we met the Italian maestro behind the menu, who spoke with pride and passion about each creation.
This was Pizza Pazza, Cecconi’s weekly ode to the art of the pizza, with unlimited slices and soft drinks from midday until 3pm. But this was no conveyor belt brunch. It was a curated tasting, with thin-crust pizzas brought one at a time, still hot from the oven, each one introduced with pride and enthusiasm by the attentive staff.
Before the pizzas even began, we were treated to two surprises from the kitchen: plump truffle arancini, with a subtle whisper of the prized fungi, and calamari, with a sprinkling of smoked paprika, so delicately crisp it seemed to melt the moment it touched the tongue. The batter was ultra-light, just enough to hold the curl of squid within.
The Pizza Funghi arrived first – an earthy, umami-rich combination of sautéed mushrooms and nutty parmesan, lifted by the creamy softness of melted fontina and a light dusting of chilli flakes. The crust was thin, blistered in all the right places, with a satisfying chew that left just enough room for the toppings to shine.
The Margherita was a masterclass in simplicity. Vibrant tomato and fragrant basil formed the backdrop for generous blobs of buffalo mozzarella, which oozed luxuriously with every bite. It
was familiar yet elevated – comfort food for fine dining. Things took a fiery turn with the Diavola, a bold, beefy number topped with spicy spianata. The meat curled at the edges where the heat had caught it, releasing little pockets of oil that mingled beautifully with the cheese. It had just the right amount of kick to keep us reaching for another slice.
As the afternoon drifted on, the light shifted across the space, casting warm shadows over white tablecloths. Staff glided between tables with an easy rhythm, topping up drinks, offering extra slices, checking in without fuss. Around us, a gentle hum of conversation rose and fell as families ambled past, en route to the pool or simply enjoying the open lobby’s grandeur. After a trio of indulgent classics, it was time to tuck into something a little more garden-fresh. Next came the Ortolana Garden Pizza, a colourful medley of seasonal vegetables on a base of rich tomato sauce and mozzarella. This one felt lighter, fresher and entirely vegetarian without sacrificing flavour. Sweet peppers and
soft courgettes brought contrast to the creamy base, making it the ideal mid-way palate reset.
Finally, the Quattro Formaggi – a decadent, velvety blend of Gorgonzola, smoked scamorza, parmesan and mozzarella –came topped with curls of bresaola and a scattering of peppery rocket. Smoky, salty and satisfyingly pungent, it was rich without being overwhelming, and proof that when four cheeses come together in harmony, something magical happens.
Cecconi’s has managed something rare: a relaxed brunch that still feels refined, led by a team who clearly care about the details. With Amine's impeccable hosting, the culinary precision and a menu that celebrates classic Italian craft, Pizza Pazza is an experience well worth lingering over. We will definitely be back. ✤

Alongstanding icon of refined leisure, The Diplomatic Club continues to set the benchmark for excellence in the world of private clubs. Far from simply maintaining its reputation, it elevates the standard with an array of exceptional offerings, including various eateries, access to both pool and beach, a recently renovated spa, water sports and even a kids’ club for the little ones. Blending tradition with modernity, the design captures the essence of Qatari heritage while embracing contemporary principles of recreational planning. Inspired by the historic palaces of the region – renowned for their multiple courtyards – the architectural style of the club reflects a deep respect for the past. Elegant arcades and majestic entrances echo the timeless beauty of traditional Qatari design, while the interior showcases an intricate tapestry of local carvings, celebrating the nation's artistic richness. The result? A harmonious and unified structure where art and architecture converge.
With soaring temperatures for most of the year, it’s no surprise that Qatar boasts an abundance of beach and pool offerings available all year round. But for those seeking an exclusive seaside experience that is far removed from the crowds, The Diplomatic Club is in a league of its own. With direct access to pristine shores, guests can indulge in the luxury of dedicated sun loungers, umbrellas, plush towels and impeccable food and beverage service – crafted to satisfy every sun-seeker’s desire. A lifeguard is on hand throughout the day to ensure safety for all pool visitors. While basking in the sun, I indulged in a perfectly crafted cappuccino and a refreshing mojito mocktail from Al Borj, the club’s iconic poolside restaurant. Al Borj impresses with an extensive all-day menu, offering everything from a hearty English breakfast to crisp, refreshing salads and a variety of gourmet sandwiches. For younger guests, a thoughtfully curated selection of kids’ meals ensures everyone is well catered to – making it an ideal spot for leisurely, sun-soaked dining.
The premium water sports offering is what truly sets The Diplomatic Club apart. Golden sunshine glistening over the bay and calm, inviting waters, make for an experience that blends adrenaline with awe-inspiring views. As I sped across the surface of West Bay lagoon on a Jet Ski, I was treated to a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of Doha’s ever-evolving skyline – an exhilarating ride with a landscape like no other.
From carving waves on a wakeboard to bouncing along on a banana boat or trying a hand at paddleboarding, there's no shortage of thrilling aquatic adventures to be had. The calm, sheltered waters of the club's private beach create an ideal environment for both seasoned thrill-seekers and first-time adventurers. Being a first-time Jet Skier, I
marvelled at how expertly the instructors were able to ensure a safe, seamless and adrenaline-filled experience. With premium equipment – from high-performance boards and boots to top-tier safety gear – every detail is thoughtfully considered for maximum enjoyment.
Of course, no daycation feels truly complete without a visit to the spa – at least, not for me. Renovated in 2022, the space evokes a distinctly European sense of understated luxury. You're instantly enveloped in a cocoon of rich walnut panelling, its warm tones adding a comforting elegance to every corner, and sleek, modern spotlighting is masterfully integrated casting a soft glow. The large, circular mirrors –brilliantly lit and beautifully framed – add a contemporary edge to the space. And with modern candle holders in every room, the entire experience feels thoughtfully tailored to your individual treatment.
To ensure every guest is perfectly accommodated, the spa offers extensive facilities, including state-of-the-art workout spaces and serene treatment rooms. Thoughtfully designed for flexibility, there is also a ladies-only gym and, adding to the indulgence are a luxurious Jacuzzi and an impressive plunge bath – very much the wellness trend of the moment.
Now, onto a facility that truly deserves special mention: the hammam. Adorned with intricate mosaic tiling, rich geometric copper accents and smooth marble slabs, the space exudes an old-world charm that instantly transports you to the heart of Morocco. After a morning in the pool and making waves on the West
Bay waterfront, I was in desperate need of a cleansing hammam treatment. And, from the moment I lay on the warmed slab, I could feel my skin thanking me. A blend of ingredients rich in essential vitamins and minerals was applied, feeding my skin with an instant glow, while the exfoliation process was both invigorating and soothing –gently scrubbing away dead skin, unclogging pores and drawing out toxins. The head and facial massage was a special touch that elevated the experience and I was even able to take home the loofah for continued exfoliation in the comfort of my own bathroom.
Clean and rejuvenated, it was time to complete the makeover with a blowout at the salon. Thoughtfully designed spaces ensure comfort and privacy for all, with a dedicated men’s salon separate to The Beauty Center which is for women only and has a separate ladies’ room where I was able to enter with ease to accommodate my hijab. It is these considerate touches that elevate the experience and explain why the salon is always fully booked! I opted for a wavy blowout and received bouncy, voluminous locks that lasted well into the night. Be it a classic style, or something more daring, you are most certainly in expert hands.
At 5pm, with sunset just around the corner, dinner was incredibly unconventional and an experience exclusive to The Diplomatic Club: the BBQ donut. As we set sail from the shore, a dedicated chef prepared a personalised barbecue feast, with fresh cuts of chicken and beef made to my liking, all while the sea breeze and stunning views created the perfect backdrop. The thoughtful details, like my waiter sharing interesting facts about the local shores and fish caught in the area, made the experience feel even more bespoke. Each donut also features its own sound system, adding the perfect ambience. With a selection of soft drinks, teas and coffees to enjoy, this is a one-of-a-kind way to indulge in great food, incredible views and a truly memorable time with friends or family.
From the moment you arrive at The Diplomatic Club, one thing is abundantly clear: an unwavering and palpable pride in service runs through every crevice of this exceptional venue. Every individual I had the pleasure of encountering, from the skilled water sports team to the attentive waitstaff and knowledgeable spa professionals, exuded a genuine passion for their role. This seamless blend of impeccable service, premium management and high-end entertainment establishes The Diplomatic Club as not just a place to visit, but a hub that marries lifestyle and connection in the heart of the city. ✤
Liz O’Reilly took a trip to Andalusia to visit an outstanding property and share amazing adventures.
When I think of Malaga, in the heart of Spain's Andalusia region, I automatically think of golf. After all, the municipality is home to more than 60 courses. However, a visit to Anantara Villa Padierna Palace
Benahavís Marbella Resort was the ideal opportunity to discover that this area has so much more to offer.
After an easy flight via Istanbul, we were met at Malaga Airport and swiftly transported to the hotel in a comfortable, air-conditioned people carrier. Driving up to the property, which is indeed surrounded by rolling, manicured greens (Flamingos Golf is the centrepiece but the resort actually commands 54 holes from its prime position as the hub of three courses), it would be easy to imagine this imposing edifice as an ancient palace.
Inside, a soaring, glass-roofed atrium surrounded by tiers of rooms behind Moorish-style arches, an abundance of water features, artworks and classical statuary combine to enhance this impression.
In fact, this resort, which is almost part museum, houses a collection of more than 1,200 works of art spread throughout the spa, gardens, lounges and guest rooms. Highlights include pieces of Greco-Roman sculpture, works from the Iberian period, noble coats of arms and a selection of extraordinary period-spanning canvases signed by prominent artists, not to mention an imposing Roman amphitheatre. So, it’s surprising to discover that this modern-day palace is, in fact, less than 25 years old and was purpose built to serve the vision of its owner and as a tribute to his wife.
Walking through the doors, the first thing I noticed was the fabulous scent of fresh flowers, as gorgeous spring floral arrangements took centre stage in the expansive lobby area. Friendly and helpful staff welcomed us and, after a brief and efficient check in, I was quickly headed to my room. My super comfortable accommodation was both spacious and gracious. Sepia toned, toile de jouy-style wallpaper dotted with whimsical prints in golden frames gave an air of classical luxury. The large bed, in its pristine white linens, faced a cosy seating area with sofa and chair, while a handy desk provided plenty of workspace.
A walk-through dressing area abutted the bathroom, which was clad in marble, picking up the tones of the wallpaper, and boasted both a powerful shower and a separate and very appealing tub. A generous selection of amenities from Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle made me feel both welcomed and pampered.
I spent a few minutes taking in the gorgeous view of those endless rolling greens from my window before heading to lunch at La Loggia, which boasts a farmers’ market-style concept with bright baskets of local fruits and vegetables that you can choose to have included in your meal. We sat on the sun-soaked terrace and enjoyed an exceptional selection of black-skinned tomatoes, visually striking and perfect with a sprinkle of coarse salt,
accompanied by rich, creamy cheese and the wonderful Malagan speciality of gazpacho with juicy prawns. A selection of desserts had us all exclaiming aloud.
La Logia is just one of this fabulous property’s dining venues, which also include, among others, 99 Sushi Bar & Restaurant, Irene’s Health Kitchen, where Chef Irene Hernández serves up a menu of healthy and detoxifying dishes, and the recently added Olà Beirut, where you’ll find classic Middle Eastern flavours – a touch of home for us.
On our first evening, we were treated to a sublime experience at La Veranda, the resort’s iconic dining venue which presents a combination of heritage local dishes and favourites from the last 20 years, all curated under the watchful eye of Head Chef José Carlos Delgado Serrano. We began with a mezze selection from Olà Beirut which, to my delight, included some of the best Fattoush I’ve come across. The amuse bouche was savoury beetroot macarons, something I’ve never tried before and an absolute hit with an earthy deep pink shell encasing a tart cheesy filling. The rest of the meal was equally innovative and impressive with wild sea bass loin perfectly complemented by pea puree and caviar beurre blanc and, my personal favourite, the dessert of pistachio crème brûlée with orange blossom ice cream. Simply outstanding.
One of Anatara’s great strengths is the group’s ability to offer guests unique experiences at each of its properties. In
terms of dining, they saved the best for last with Designer Dining by Anantara, an incredible feast on our final night.
In a gorgeously decorated private dining room, we were served a selection of dishes inspired by one of Malaga’s most famous sons, Pablo Picasso.
With a menu printed on a stylised paint palette, our hosts informed us that the dishes, including Marenga style clams, Ajoblanco with almonds and tuna with onion, were known to be some of the artist’s favourites, according to information from the Picasso Foundation – this was no selection plucked from thin air – and every mouthful offered a taste of tradition.
Entertainment came from a talented flamenco duo of guitarist and dancer, the cherry on the cake being the opportunity to join in with the dancing. An absolutely perfect way to showcase the very best of local Malagan heritage that ensured we headed home with the happiest of memories.
On the subject of Anantara’s experiential offerings, we spent a memorable day sampling some of the premium options available in the region, starting with a visit to LA Almazara, an Andalusian olive farm where we enjoyed a guided tour. We learnt about the different types of trees and growing procedures before visiting the pressing machinery in a purpose-built, one-of-a-kind, boutique olive mill housed in a stunning building, designed by Philippe Starck to resemble one of the region’s iconic bulls.
A guided tasting gave us the chance to snap up some of this premium golden liquid to take home before we headed to our next stop. The Spanish Horse Experience allowed us to get up close to native breeds in a huge area of natural habitat that’s been declared a UNESCO biosphere reserve. We also saw some of the show horses going through their training and even visited the stables where, I have to admit, I fell a little bit in love with a certain spikey maned young chap – sadly, they wouldn’t let me take him home!
After a tour round the reserve, we headed to neighbouring Ronda, one of Andalusia’s most iconic towns which is built
around a deep gorge. The scenery here is absolutely stunning and, following another exceptional meal, we took great delight in strolling the winding streets, visiting pretty shops and a fascinating museum and then staring into the vertiginous gorge as we crossed the bridge which divides the town’s newer and older sides.
It wouldn’t be Anantara without a trip to the spa and the one at Villa Padierna is really quite something. One of the largest in Europe, it features more than 2,000sq/m of Roman and Turkish baths with 13 treatment rooms and a salon. Gentle tones of cream and golden hued marble make for an atmosphere of relaxation and subdued opulence, while brands such as Valmont, Biologique, Esthederm, Comfort Zone, Piroche and Oribe add to the feeling of exclusivity. I visited the aromatic spa circuit, the only one of its kind on the Costa del Sol, which consists of a series of steam rooms – salt, rose and Hammam – as well as a rosescented bath and ice facilities. I must admit I was not keen on the idea of this – I’m really not a big fan of steam therapy. But I’m always keen to try a new experience and the salt option, in which you rub liberal amounts of coarse salt onto steam heated skin, left my skin feeling absolutely amazing. I’m now a firm believer and a total convert.
In the capable hands of therapist Victoria, I enjoyed a gentle aromatherapy massage with almond oil and sweet orange followed by time in the relaxation room with lemon and ginger tea beside a gentle fountain looking onto the indoor pool. All too soon it was time to wish ‘adiós’ to this amazing property and the new friends we had made there. From the impeccable accommodation to the friendly and efficient staff and from the delectable dining to the wonderful experiences laid on for us, we truly couldn’t have asked for more. We left, vowing to return and maybe next time, we’ll even get in a round of golf. ✤

Fluidly cascading fabrics echo Renaissance art and ethereal transparency reveals glimpses of the body as lightweight materials move effortlessly. Key pieces are sculpted and twisted to form fluid, feminine silhouettes. The looks are finished with pointed suede mules, classic ballerinas and minimalist knitted sock boots.
For men, pared-back utility is emphasised through functional details. Classic styles are revisited with sleeveless tailoring, bringing a fresh perspective to traditional designs. Effortless elegance is introduced via silk sets while Bermuda shorts are presented as a refined yet relaxed summer staple. Adding a luxurious and contemporary edge to warm-weather dressing, light summer leather jackets are layered over elevated essentials with soft rib textures. Garments are complemented by timeless soft leather sandals or mule loafers.
This season, COS also introduces a unique marbled print inspired by Renaissance paintings, created by pressing flower buds against a lens, capturing a soft blur with delicate details. The seasonal palette is built around a foundation of off-whites, warm earth tones and deep brown. Muted blues transition into rich navy, while soft terracotta adds vibrancy to womenswear. ✤

Need to Know:
G20 introduces the novel concept of a female US President with a military background. Although a theme that has been explored before in Hollywood, this time around Viola Davis, who is also a co-producer, probably had a desire to make a statement with this film.
Creators: Viola Davies, Andrew Lazar, Julius Tennon
Director: Patricia Riggin
Cast: Viola Davis, Anthony Anderson, Ramon Ridriguez, Marsai Martin and Angela Basset.
For starters, it has a magnificent setting during a G20 summit in Cape Town. It’s thoroughly entertaining, with ample thrill and drama, as a well-trained group of mercenaries plot to hijack the venue. And in true Hollywood style, the US president (Danielle Sutton), played by Viola Davis, a former marine, mother, wife and now leader of the free World, steps up and comes to the rescue. For many of those who have seen Viola in Woman King, she has a formidable screen presence.
It’s not easy to impress action-thriller movie fans but G20 absolutely delivers. From high stakes action scenes to intense and gripping sequences, it’s an adrenaline-fuelled ride from start to finish.
Viola hits the mark as a feisty US president, as she uses her governing and military experience to defend her family, fellow leaders and the world (think Air Force One).
So, if you’re in the mood for a Die Hard- or White House Down-style action-thriller, then G20 is absolutely worth your time and will keep you at the edge of your seat.
By Gigi Perez
Gigi Perez first went viral on TikTok for her hit single Sailor Song in 2024, which now opens her debut album, drawing in listeners with a familiar sound. The singer’s raw lyricism over a stripped back acoustic sound brings a fresh perspective, evident in Sleeping , where repeated lyrics evoke visceral emotion. Nothing, Absolutely stands out with the singer’s haunting voice overlayed on a soothing instrumental backdrop before it softens to a lull in the last few minutes. Moving to Chemistr y, the only explicitly marked track takes a louder turn, exploring themes of electric yearning and concealment. The complete opposite, Survivor’s Guilt is a one hour 20-minute instrumental track with a single yet powerful line: “I, I would be, at all.”
While Fable was released prior to the album, it makes for an intriguing listen within the context of At The Beach, In Every Life. Finally, Please Be Rude and title track At The Beach, In Every Life revert back to a laid-back, reverential sound like Sailor Song , although much less melancholy.
Ultimately, the album sounds like a parent rocking their child to sleep through a storm or two star-crossed lovers yielding to their fate – gut wrenching yet tender. Gigi Perez has only just begun her musical journey but has already made waves, revealing just a glimpse of the untapped potential she has yet to fully explore.
By Bon Iver
SABLE, fABLE is Bon Iver’s fifth album, which is split into two parts: SABLE and fABLE . The album opens with a 12 second drone that acts as a prelude. THINGS BEHIND THINGS BEHIND THINGS , the next track, is vulnerable and the lyrical repetition evokes feelings of nervousness and desperation.
S P E Y S I D E is a rawer, strippeddown acoustic sound with visceral imagery woven into the lyrics. The long musical interludes hold space for appreciation and reflection. AWARDS SEASON conveys the melancholia that accompanies feelings of acceptance when a relationship has faded. The atmospheric switch when Short Story begins is immediate. The cinematic music is emotional, as it sounds hopeful, bringing the reader out of SABLE ’s depressive shadow. Everything Is Peaceful Love and Day One are catchy tunes over an addictive beat, the latter featuring Dijon and Flock of Dimes. If Only I Could Wait stands out with a feature from Danielle Haim. The track blends Danielle’s unique sound with Bon Iver’s in an exhilarating collaboration. The album closes with Au Revoir , having moved out of SABLE ’s depressive shadow and ending on a positive note, leaving the listener with feelings of clarity and hope.

Big Dumb Eyes
By Nate Bargatze
The first book from outstanding standup man Nate Bargatze – one-time genius, before he hit his head on a rock and "my skull got, like, dented or something”. In it he brings his inimitable viewpoint to some great stories, such as tales of Old Blue, his first car, a clunky stick-shift Mazda, and the trials of travelling as a Southerner, apparently Northerners wonder if he believes in dinosaurs. Add in the story of his first apartment, shared with and bitten by rats, and numerous debates with his wife on subjects from diet to shopping, and you know you’re in for a fun ride.
Some people can’t live without their phones, but one university student proved it literally. A 27-year-old Chinese national living in Japan was rescued from Mount Fuji, not once, but twice in four days. His first dramatic airlift should have been enough. But no, he returned days later to fetch the phone he’d left behind mid-rescue. Unsurprisingly, things didn’t go well
with altitude sickness at over 3,000 metres. Cue rescue number two. Officials were less than thrilled. Offseason climbs are discouraged for a reason; Mount Fuji’s steep, snowcovered trails are no joke. Whether the phone was ever found remains unclear. What is clear: this guy may be more committed to data recovery than most IT departments. Let’s just hope next time he opts for cloud backup.
A Michigan teen’s pettiness made him a criminal when he emailed a fake bomb threat to stop his girlfriend from cruising to Jamaica without him. As the Carnival Sunrise sailed out of Miami, an anonymous message landed: “Hey, I think someone might have a bomb on your sunrise cruise ship.” Chaos ensued. Authorities searched more than 1,000 rooms and both US and Jamaican coast guards got involved. Eventually, the
hoax was traced to 19-year-old Joshua Darrell Lowe II. His motive? Heartbreak and pet-sitting duty. Left behind with the animals while his girlfriend’s family sipped piña coladas, he decided to sink their fun (pun intended). The FBI wasn’t impressed. Though he faced up to five years, a judge reduced it to eight months. If you’re mad about being left behind, maybe try booking your own ticket?
If the idea of owning a designer handbag without selling a kidney sounds appealing, 2025 may be your moment. Thanks to Trump-era tariffs and the ongoing diplomatic tango between the US and China, luxury shopping has taken a fascinating turn. With import costs soaring, Western shoppers are skipping the boutiques and heading straight to Chinese platforms that are offering
what appear to be high-end goods at sceptically low prices. Handbags, watches and shoes with suspiciously familiar logos, all for less than a weekend brunch. It’s all part of a wider trend, where Chinese manufacturers have taken to TikTok to flaunt their wares in slick videos of gloved hands, studio lighting and the works. Of course, whether that ‘Chanel’ is actually 'Channel' is for you to find out.
