Feeling The Heat!

Icouldn’t have said it better than this quote myself. I know that summer’s hot every year here in Qatar, but this year seems to be exceptional – and with reports of global warming and fires in places there really shouldn’t be, that feeling seems to be correct.

If, like us, you’re here for the hotter months, we’ve got you covered with two great features. One outlining summer special offers from some of the country’s best hotels and the other giving info on our favourite ways to let off steam while staying cool – we might just see you at the laser tag or bouncing on a trampoline as we while away the scorching days.

Elsewhere this month, we’ve been immersed in loads of great cuisine with a particular emphasis on regional dishes and, as always, we’ve rounded up some great dining deals too.

For once, I was the one taking a fabulous trip and it gives me great pleasure to tell you all about it in our travel pages – the paradise that is Avani+ Fares Maldives is really quite something. And don’t miss the details of my colleague’s trip to Dubai, he also had a great time.

For motoring, we got the chance to check out the newest Grand Wagoneer – a very impressive vehicle with a huge amount of space. And, I had the opportunity to chat to the artist behind @Gollythecat, who seems to find inspiration everywhere she looks.

As always, we have our regular roundups of news from the worlds of tech, entertainment, fashion and happenings across the city.

I hope you enjoy the issue and remember, stay chilled.

TURN UP AND GO GREEN

Want to get involved with the next big thing? Now’s your chance with volunteer opportunities at Qatar’s second largest international event soon to be launched.

The International Horticultural Expo 2023 Doha Qatar will take place over 179 days, from October 2 to March 28, 2024, over 1.7 million square metres at Al Bidda Park in the heart of the capital just steps from Corniche Steet. Held under the theme Green Desert, Better Environment, it aims to encourage sustainable innovation and reduce desertification. Divided into three zones – International, Family and Cultural – it will inspire visitors to take part in the change through four sub-themes: Modern Agriculture; Technology and Innovation; Environmental Awareness; and Sustainability.

There will be myriad activities, entertainment and edutainment for all visitors, including ministers and official delegations, as well as business visitors, horticulture aficionados, tourists, families and children.

As the first event of its kinds to be held in Qatar, the GCC and the wider region, Expo 2023 will play a significant role towards achieving Qatar’s sustainability goals and will put

the country back into the international spotlight, similarly to the World Cup.

With more than three million local and international visitors expected to attend and up to 80 countries taking part, there will be a great opportunity to showcase the best of Qatar. And around 3,000 to 4,000 volunteers will be needed across all areas, from visitor engagement to backof-house, to ensure success.

Opportunities for volunteering – through part or all of the six months over which the Expo runs – are due to be announced shortly and details will be made available on the official Expo 2023 website and social media platforms. ✤

SNOW IN THE DESERT?

Yes really! Snow Dunes theme park provides just that, with temperatures as low as minus four degrees. From slides that reach 50km/hr, snow guns and a snowy merry-go-round to an ice-skating rink, it really doesn’t get much cooler than this and they’ve got special offers on until August 19. Prices start from QR165 for two hours and they’ll even provide jackets, pants, gloves and socks to keep your warm. GO: Visit snowdunes.qa for more information.

JUMP TO IT

There can be few better ways to burn off some of that summer stuck-indoors energy than bouncing till your heart’s content on a trampoline – trust us, it might look like fun but it’s seriously hard work and you’ll be getting a great workout. An activity that’s suitable for both adults and kids, give this a try and you might just find yourself hooked. Check out what’s on offer at Trampo Extreme, at Aspire Zone, where you’ll find not just a whole lot of individual trampolines but also trampoline basketball hoops, a foam pit, battle beam a climbing wall and an amazing sky trail – a rope course with a zipline at the end. MUSEUMS ARE A MUST

When we’re looking for indoor things to do, Qatar’s many and varied museums are an obvious choice. Visitors flock from all over the world to the Museum of Islamic Art, which we’re lucky enough to have on our doorstep. It not only has amazing collections but it’s worth a trip for the architecture alone. 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum is a fabulous place that will enthral sports enthusiasts with its interactive displays covering everything from motor racing to football. And, our current favourite is the Museum of Illusions. A must visit, specially if you’re going with kids. It’s full of weird and wonderful things to see and try and will certainly while away several hours. Go: Visit mia.org.qa / 321qosm,org.qa / museumofillusions. qa for further information.

LET BATTLE COMMENCE

And since we’re in the mood for a bit of combat, we’d seriously suggest you try paintballing but, be warned, getting splatted can hurt and it’s definitely not for the faint hearted. Paintballing at Battle Zone involves loading up your ‘gun’ and aiming to paint as many of the opposing team as possible – groups can be anything from two to 12 players for adults and 14 for kids. You’ll be provided with all the protective gear you need and there are staff, medics and instructors on hand to make sure everyone follows the rules and plays safely. Fancy giving it a shot (pun totally intended)? Zone times are 4pm to 10pm Sunday to Wednesday, 4pm to 12am on Thursdays, 2pm to 12am on Fridays and 2pm to 10am on Sundays. Packages start at QR100 per person for 20 minutes.

GO: Visit battlezoneqa.com for more information.

THIS MEANS WAR

Get your mates together and call on your inner warrior for a battle royal. We love laser tag and have to say it really brings out a competitive streak. Dashing around in the dark and trying to take out your opponents guarantees a real adrenaline rush and is huge fun and, believe it or not, it’s also a great workout – if you’re a bit out of shape, this will find you out! There are numerous laser tag venues around Qatar and we particularly like the one at Angry Birds World which is open Saturday to Wednesday 10am to 10pm, Thursday 10am to 12am and Friday 1pm to 12am. Tickets to the park start at QR50 for adults and QR150 for kids.

THRILLS AND SPILLS

Hold onto your lunch when you visit Quest where you’ll discover the world’s tallest drop tower ride and the world’s tallest indoor roller coaster. Qatar’s premier indoor theme park has a whole host of brilliant rides and time realms where you can explore the past, present and future and there are even mini versions of some of the most popular rides for kids aged four to 10, so they won’t be left out. It’s described as a ‘World of Wonder’ and it really is, ‘specially when it’s far too hot to be outside. Tickets cost QR235 for adults and QR160 for those aged four to 12 years, who must be accompanied by a fare paying adult.

BEST FOOT FORWARD

Yes, we know running in summer sounds crazy in terms of keeping cool. But, come on, this is Qatar, where it is, of course, possible to run outside on air-conditioned jogging tracks. Head down to Al Gharrafa Park, the first of its kind to open back in December 2021, or Umm Al Seneem Park, which took the Guinness World Record for the longest air-conditioned outdoor path, at 1,143 metres, when it was inaugurated in October last year. Kept at a constant temperature of around 26 degrees, the tracks are the perfect place to make sure the summer heat doesn’t derail your fitness goals.

I BELIEVE I CAN FLY

Well, not literally of course, or, at least not without a little help. And that’s where Skydive Qatar, at Al Duhail Camp, comes in. With the country’s largest indoor wind tunnel, they can give you wings! There are expert instructors on hand to make sure your experience is both fun and safe and kids as young as four can take part. Prices start at QR199 for a two-minute flight for a first-time flyer and you’ll get training, flight equipment and a certificate. GO: Call 5505 5765 or 3099 6669 for more information.

NEED FOR SPEED

From two feet to four wheels, if you feel the need for speed, the country’s newest indoor go-karting track at Trocadero Mini Le Mans at Place Vendome Mall is described by the experts of @qatar_karting as ‘the track layout is very tight and technical’ and they have a fleet of new Biz Electric go karts so it could just be the place to go for some amazing thrills. Opening hours are 2pm to 10pm daily and sessions are booked on a first come, first served basis, priced at QR75. Gondolania at Villagio Mall is also very popular and is an ideal track for beginners. It’s open from 10am to 10pm Saturday to Wednesday, 10am to 11pm on Thursdays and 1pm to 11pm on Fridays. Sessions cost QR70. GO: Call 4144 0000 (Trocadero) or 4403 9800 (Gondolania) for more information.

BROUGHT TO BOOK

In these days of tech rule, where we have computers at our fingertips from work to home and even play, many have forgotten the allure of a good book. But, as Carl Sagan said: “One glance at a book and you hear the voice of another person, perhaps someone dead for 1,000 years. To read is to voyage through time.” And, with that in mind, who wouldn’t want to visit Qatar National Library. Not only is the Rem Koolhaas-designed building stunning, the exterior resembling two pieces of paper that are pulled apart and folded diagonally at the corners to create a shell-like structure, enclosing the open-plan interior, but the library itself is an amazing resource housing more than a million books in numerous languages. There are dedicated areas for children and young adults as well as a 200-seat special events area and a 120-seat auditorium. The library hosts regular events and programmes and there’s even a restaurant and café to visit, in case your reading whets your appetite. Qatar National Library is free to enter and it’s open daily from 8am to 8pm except Fridays, when the hours are 4pm to 8pm. GO: Visit qnl.qa for more information

AN ICON REIMAGINED

FACT spent the day in the 2023 Grand Wagoneer, a premium, large SUV poised to take its market segment by storm.

Producing quality off-road commercial vehicles since the late 1940s, Jeep has become an iconic brand, one that is enjoyed by millions of drivers all over the world. This month, FACT was invited by Jeep Qatar United Cars Almana to test drive the new 2023 Grand Wagoneer, a vehicle that has begun to carve out a legacy of its own.

Exterior

As the full-sized premium SUV came into view, we instantly recognised the new Grand Wagoneer as a modern interpretation of an American-made icon. The exceptional craftsmanship applied to the exterior design of this striking model is obvious from first glance, and we knew it would take a considerable amount of time to fully appreciate all that has gone into the creation of this imposing vehicle.

The Wagoneer’s bold new exterior design has been crafted with a wide stance and features a classic yet refined silhouette. At the front end of the SUV sits a distinctive hood and prominent front grille combination, the latter featuring knurled finishes on the rings. Complementing these grand features is the unique LED lighting, including premium LED headlamps and foglamps. Shifting to the flanks, we noticed that, like the windscreen, large architecturally drawn windows are incorporated into the design, greatly enhancing outward visibility. Paying homage to the original

Grand Wagoneer are the clean roofline and A-line that run around the vehicle in its entirety. The inclusion of a panoramic tri-pane sunroof allows an abundance of natural light inside and offers greenhouse-like views. Chunky, 22-inch aluminium wheels add to the SUV’s rugged appearance and hint at its off-road capabilities. At the rear, we appreciated how the LED taillamps complete the full suite of exterior LED lights, stretching from the rear quarter panels to the hands-free power liftgate.

Interior

On entering the vehicle, we were immediately taken by the abundance of space on offer. In fact, the 2023 Grand Wagoner boasts the best-in-class overall passenger volume, amongst many other bragging rights.

The fully digital cockpit is jampacked with cutting-edge tech, is immaculately laid out and features ultra comfortable captain’s chairs.

The second-row seating also offers captain’s chairs, access to which is made simple by the power release Tip ‘n Slide function that creates more space for passengers to get to their seats. The third row can recline and fold flat, making it easy to configure for either passengers or luggage.

This convenient internal set-up, coupled with the four-zone HVAC system, ensured we were completely relaxed, cool and comfortable as we set off on our day of driving around Qatar.

CITY RIDES •

Infotainment & Technology

As we effortlessly cruised along the freeways and inner-city streets, we had time to take in the seemingly endless, cuttingedge tech, housed in the interior of this remarkable SUV.

The 2023 Grand Wagoneer is equipped with next-generation innovations including the new advanced Uconnect 5 system. Other notable features include a frameless digital cluster, a rearseat monitoring camera and a premium McIntosh audio system. Additionally, we were told this new model is available with up to 75 inches of total digital display screen area, including nearly 45 inches of total screens along the front dashboard.

We found the 12-inch reconfigurable touchscreen display featuring split-screen capabilities to be most impressive. This user-friendly set-up features the before mentioned, all-new Uconnect 5 system, and includes wi-fi capability, full smartphone connectivity, Alexa, access to hundreds of thousands of apps, TV shows and movies, amongst many other desirable features. In addition, 11 USB ports and multiple passenger screens are located in both the front and the rear of the vehicle.

Safety

The artisans responsible for the Grand Wagoneer’s design have included an extensive range of leading-edge safety technologies and driver assistance systems.

These include a head-up display (HUD), Hands Free Active Driving Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assist, Intersection Collision Assist, Drowsy Driver Detection, along with turn-by-turn navigation and so much more. The fully digital rear-view mirror provides an unobstructed view of the road behind and can revert to a traditional reflective mirror by toggling the switch underneath.

Performance

The 2023 model is powered by a new 3.0-litre Hurricane twin-turbo, inline, six-cylinder engine, combined with a TorqueFlite eightspeed automatic transmission. We discovered the abundance of power and acceleration on offer to be easily accessible, allowing the SUV to effortlessly devour any road we put before it. Although we couldn’t fully test the vehicle’s 4x4 capabilities on this excursion, we were informed that this model has three

available 4x4 systems, along with an optional Quadra-Lift air suspension and a Selec-Terrain traction management system. This means there is almost no off-road terrain this premium SUV cannot conquer, and any other SUV in this segment would have a tough time keeping up with it in the rough. ✤

The General Manager of Le Méridien City Center, Doha, talks about his thirst for knowledge, international collaboration and an unusual talent.

fact magazine 46 • 5 OVER 5

What made you decide to move from your home country of Jordan to Qatar?

The decision to leave Jordan was a combination of eagerness to combine professional growth with personal fulfilment and not only that but the passion and enthusiasm to broaden my horizons. I chose to move to Qatar as my relentless curiosity about the world sparked my interest, especially after the successful execution of the World Cup and the image that Qatar presented to the world. This triggered my eagerness to be part of their journey and plans for the future.

Le Méridien is one of Doha’s newest hotels. Please tell us a bit about the property, what makes it unique?

Le Méridien City Center is Doha’s new hot spot, the most central destination, fit for every traveller. Located in West Bay the hotel is a stunning property that offers easy access to The City Center Mall, Doha Exhibition and Convention Center (DECC) and all the city's major attractions. Guest experiences are enhanced through brand programmes, exceptional services and authentic experiences curated with the highest level of personalisation. Inspired by the era of glamorous travel, Le Méridien unlocks destinations around the world, celebrating each culture through the European spirit of savouring the good life. This stunning property is bringing to Doha the European flair for the curious and creative-minded traveller. Six dining venues, a ballroom with a bridal suite, spa with sauna and Jacuzzi, an indoor and outdoor pool, a fully equipped fitness centre, a Kids’ club and more are all available for a perfect R&R experience for business and leisure travellers alike.

You have previously spoken about the importance of teamwork. How many staff does Le Méridien have, what countries are they from and how do you pull them all together cohesively?

Experiencing different cultures, languages and environments through travel has broadened my perspective and enhanced my understanding of the world. Therefore, I wanted to bring that spirit to Le Méridien City Center. Today we have more than 200 employees with 34 different nationalities such as Turkish, Indian, Sudanese, Mauritian, Bangladeshi and so many others. I am always encouraging collaboration and, through mutual support and learning, we come together and work towards a common objective.

Hospitality can be very challenging in terms of work-life balance – what do you like to do in your spare time and how do you achieve that balance?

Work-Life balance is a dynamic process and it always requires ongoing adjustments based on changing circumstances and priorities. I’m striving for a sustainable balance that allows me to fulfil professional responsibilities while enjoying my personal life. In my spare time I engage in recreational activities, intense work outs and friendly gatherings.

Please tell us something surprising about yourself – maybe a secret talent/hobby/passion.

I am a big football fan and I try not to miss any game of my favourite teams. Travelling and music are my favourite hobbies. During Covid, when travelling was restricted, I learned how to DJ and mixed some of my favourite tracks and tunes. ✤

One standout achievement that I'm particularly proud of is the opening of Iggy's in Singapore in 2004. It became the first restaurant in Singapore to be included in the prestigious list of the 100 Best Restaurants of the World, ranking at number 98 in 2006.

In 2007, Iggy's continued to make waves and was ranked as the fourth-best restaurant in Asia and reached the 60th position in the 100 Best Restaurants of the World. During the same year, I was honoured to receive the title of San Pellegrino Chef of the Year.

Having recently marked your one-year anniversary with the Chedi Katara, how are you developing the culinary section of the hotel?

I am delighted to be working alongside my team, most of whom have been with me for many years, to develop the culinary section of Chedi Katara. I empower them to contribute their

own ideas and creations and together we constantly update our menus to reflect new trends and innovative concepts.

You have mentioned that your culinary philosophy revolves around simplicity to bring out and enhance the natural flavors of the ingredients. Does this philosophy resonate in your signature dish and could you share its development?

My cuisine is greatly influenced by Japanese ingredients, which I have had the pleasure of experiencing during my frequent visits to Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto. The exceptional quality and astonishing taste of these ingredients inspire me. One of my signature dishes features Hokkaido scallops served with a green pea flan and parmesan foam. For an extra touch of indulgence, we also offer it with Kristal caviar. Enjoy!

What do you like to do when you are not in the kitchen?

During my leisure time, I enjoy dining out with my wife and friends, savouring a fine cigar by the pool, travelling and dedicating as much time as possible to my family.✤

FLAVOURS OF THE LEVANT

Hannah Nesbitt discovered a selection of Arabic-infused dishes at Al Sultan Brahim at Sheraton Grand Doha Resort & Convention Hotel

Al Sultan Brahim is a family-established restaurant which was first opened in Lebanon in 1961. It has expanded over the years to add five different locations, including Kuwait and here in Doha. As the winner of this year’s prestigious Fact Dining Awards Qatar Best Lebanese Restaurant, I was keen to try out the menu.

Featuring a private elevator connecting directly from the Sheraton’s main foyer, this exceptional triangular establishment offers a top-floor setting. Boasting two walls with expansive floor-to-ceiling windows, the location allows for panoramic views across The Corniche.

The seating arrangement combines window seats and elevated central seating, all beneath the umbrella of the magnificent crystal chandelier.

Taking centre stage, at the head of the establishment, is the remarkable fish counter, where a vast array of freshly caught fish of the day is beautifully displayed on ice. Guests have the option of personally selecting their preferred fish based on weight, ranging from local hamour to lobster or substantially sized scallops.

The modern design of the restaurant is sleek and well-lit and incorporates sandy tones to mirror the environment around us; vibrant bursts of colour are provided by the numerous large plants and even large potted basil and mint. The vibrant ‘living’ walls add to the ‘outdoors-indoors’ concept.

The gentle tones of the background music playing traditional Arabic instruments add to the ambience of the evening.

The restaurant specialises in traditional Lebanese dishes, including salads, cold and hot mezze appetisers, grills and

desserts. The small mezze appetiser dishes are perfect for sharing and a great way to try the many different options available. To reflect the casual and relaxing social event of sharing a mezze in Lebanon, we began with a classic favourite, hummus. Whilst many may have tasted hummus with meat, on this occasion, the Hummus Awarma Fish had replaced the lamb with cubes of sauteed fish sprinkled with toasted pine seeds and olive oil. Alongside this flavourful dish, we had steaming hot, puffy pita bread, which was perfect for tearing open and scooping up the smooth and creamy hummus and succulent fish combination. The Bizri Fish Salad was a surprising option with its intriguing presentation. On first glance, its main ingredients were not initially apparent. The dish was, in fact, topped with generous portions of crispy fried bizri fish. Similar to whitebait, this tiny fish was fried whole, adding a crunchy bite and a touch of saltiness, accompanied by the shredded lettuce, finely diced tomato and cucumber salad. Mint leaves added to the Middle Eastern flavour combinations. To further complement and combine all the savouriness and add a subtle zesty touch, the tarator dressing was skilfully mixed throughout by our waiter. The dressing itself is a tahini-based sauce infused with a touch of lemon and garlic. The crab salad presented shredded strands of crab stick, resembling spaghetti, wound into a mound, and dressed with its special spicy sauce, which added an additional kick of flavour. Two additional ocean delights came in the form of the Shrimp a la Provençale and Octopus a la Provençale. The large, juicy shrimp were served warm in a brass pot, whilst the chunky and tender pieces of octopus were enhanced by the sweet tomato dressing with the additional flavours of fresh garlic and fragrant coriander adding an aromatic, Mediterranean twist to the evening’s offerings.

The highlight, for me, was the skilfully filleted hamour, selected from the fish counter and served with a juicy lemon wedge. This locally caught fish, known for its tender and flaky texture, had been expertly prepared and cooked to perfection. Its everso slightly golden hue and chunks of meat with an additional burst of lemon juice were a flavourful and satisfying end to the meal and accompanying mezze selection.

To conclude our feast in authentic Middle Eastern fashion, an Arabic sweet arrived featuring the beloved Basbousa cake. This dessert incorporates the moistness of a semolina cake, soaked in a sweet syrup and topped with a whole almond. In addition to this, a platter of watermelon and sweet melon was a light and refreshing end to this meal.

The Lebanese-inspired culinary traditions showcased by the selection of seafood on offer encompassed an array of cooking techniques. The welcoming nature of the staff and outstanding surroundings offered a great space to enjoy a meal; whether you’re dining with friends and family or business colleagues, the establishment provides a great space to enjoy a meal together whilst savouring the delicious and traditional flavours. ✤

Michael Santos took a culinary journey into Qatari cuisine at Feeh Al’Afia.

Located in the vibrant cultural hub of Katara, Feeh Al’Afia is a hidden gem that offers an authentic and delightful culinary experience of Qatari cuisine. As I entered the restaurant, I was immediately captivated by the traditional décor and ambience, along with the seven majlises and ballroom, which exuded the Arabic charm and warmth of Qatari culture.

The atmosphere at Feeh Al’Afia is inviting and cosy, with a blend of traditional and contemporary elements. The dining area is tastefully adorned with Qatari artwork and motifs, creating an ambience that transports you to the heart of the country’s rich heritage. The soft lighting and comfortable seating arrangements contribute to a relaxed and intimate dining experience.

The service at Feeh Al’Afia is impeccable. Rabih, the Restaurant Manager, greeted us warmly and staff member Ibrahim Jamal was knowledgeable about the menu – attentive, friendly and well-versed in the intricacies of Qatari cuisine. They are more than happy to guide you through the menu, recommend options and provide insights into the cultural significance of each dish. Their genuine passion for the cuisine and dedication to customer satisfaction truly enhanced the overall dining experience.

Feeh Al’Afia offers a diverse range of dishes that showcase the art and cooking techniques deeply rooted in Qatari culture. The menu features an array of chicken, meat and vegetarian options, ensuring there’s something to suit every palate.

To begin our culinary journey, we were offered Roca Salad, a beautiful medley of fresh ingredients that captured the essence of summer in every bite. The plate arrived adorned with a bed of vibrant rocca leaves. A cucumber with yoghurt dressing left a lasting impression with its refreshing flavours and presentation.

ON THE MENU •

Join us as we delve into the details of these delectable dishes. For the main course, we chose Lamb Majbous, a traditional Qatari lamb and rice dish. The tender lamb is prepared with a blend of aromatic Arabic spices such as cardamom, cloves, cinnamon and black lime, giving it a smoky and distinct, earthy flavour. The meat was cooked to perfection, incredibly flavourful, tender and succulent and with a hint of smoky flavours. The dish was served with fragrant infused rice, which offered the perfect accompaniment to the richness of the lamb.

Our second dish was the Mandi Chicken, fragrantly spiced with aromatic rice and slow cooked in an underground oven covered with sand at 200 degrees celsius for three hours. The chicken was perfectly cooked, tender and juicy and infused with a harmonious blend of spices, creating a burst of flavour on the taste buds. The accompanying rice was fluffy, complementing the chicken beautifully.

The dish that stood out most for me was the Harees, a hearty mix of ground wheat and slow-cooked lamb. A Qatari household staple food, the lamb is simmered with a medley of spices, such as cinnamon, cardamom and nutmeg, until it becomes tender and falls apart, then blended by hand with the wheat to form a thick porridge-like consistency. Harees has a comforting and creamy texture and is often enjoyed on special occasions, so it was definitely fitting for our journey.

No Qatari dining experience would complete without indulging in a traditional dessert. We opted for Sago Assida and Ma’amoul, two exceptional Qatari offerings that stand out among the myriad of Arabic desserts. These conventional treats captivate with their unique textures and delectable taste. The Sago Assida, or sago pudding, is a treasured recipe from the Arabian Peninsula, a creamy delight made from sago pearls. The pearls are cooked in milk, resulting in a velvety and starchy texture that is comforting and indulgent. The taste is delicately sweet with a hint of cardamom and rose water, infusing it with subtle floral notes that elevate the overall taste.

The Ma’amoul cookies were filled with a luscious mixture of finely chopped dates, complemented by a medley of aromatic spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg. The delicate dough, made from semolina, flour and butter, encased the flavourful centre, creating a harmonious balance of textures and tastes. The sweetness of the dates combined with rich ice cream melded beautifully with the crumbly exterior, leaving an unforgettable impression on the palate. A refreshing, traditional respite during hot summer days or a delightful end to a hearty meal.

Overall, Feeh Al’Afia offers a truly immersive culinary experience that celebrates the essence of Qatari cuisine. From the warm and welcoming ambience to the attentive service and mouthwatering dishes, our dining experience was carefully curated to provide an authentic taste of Qatar's gastronomic heritage. Attention to detail, commitment to the quality of the food and reasonable pricing make Feeh Al’Afia a must-visit destination for anyone seeking an unforgettable dining experience in Katara. ✤

ITALIAN CULINARY TRADITIONS

Authentic Italian flavours were what Michael Santos discovered on a trip to BiCE Ristorante.

• FOODIE CORNER

Nestled within the Pullman Doha West Bay, BiCE Restaurant has long been renowned for its authentic Italian cuisine and warm, inviting .ambience which has been evident since the brand was established in 1926 in Milan, Italy.

Like its outlets across the world, in New York, Dubai and Florida, the Qatar eatery exudes an elegant, yet cosy charm with its tasteful decor, soft lighting and comfortable seating. During this visit, we enjoyed indulging in their signature dishes, truly a gastronomic experience that takes diners on a delightful culinary journey through Italy's diverse flavours.

The menu created by Chef de Cuisine Matteo boasts an array of classic and signature Italian dishes, showcasing the country’s diverse regional, culinary traditions. Each recipe is meticulously prepared with the freshest ingredients and an expert touch, from delectable antipasti to mouth-watering pasta, risotto and indulgent desserts.

The culinary adventure began with the Insalata di Polpo e Patate, a vibrant and refreshing octopus and potato salad. The octopus is carefully cooked to perfection and combined with tender boiled potatoes, creating a delightful contrast in textures. The salad is elevated with a bright, zesty dressing that balances the flavours beautifully. Each bite offered a harmonious blend of the octopus' briny essence, the potatoes' earthiness, and the refreshing tang of the sauce. The delicate flavours and expert balance set the tone for what was to come.

Pappardelle al Telefono – homemade egg pappardelle tossed with mozzarella, tomato, fresh basil and a touch of cream – is an Italian masterpiece and a BiCE signature dish that captivated our senses. From the first bite, we were transported to where taste and texture danced harmoniously, leaving an indelible mark on our gastronomic journey. The pasta was perfectly cooked, striking a delicate balance between tender and al dente. Each strand embraced the rich, velvety, clinging tomato sauce, showcasing the expertise of the culinary artisans behind this symphony of flavours. The delightful mozzarella dance truly elevated this dish to celestial heights. The cheese, so lovingly named ‘al Telefono’ (meaning ‘on the telephone’ in Italian), melted seamlessly into the tomato sauce, creating a luscious, stringy embrace with each forkful. The interplay of the creamy, slightly salty mozzarella and the vibrant, tangy tomato sauce was nothing short of divine, a true testament to the culinary magic at play.

Another incredible pasta dish and BiCE signature is the Cappellacci alla Massaia – homemade spinach and beef ravioli with porcini mushrooms, Parmigiano and cream sauce. The dish consists of delicate pockets of pasta generously filled with a scrumptious combination of ricotta cheese, spinach and nutmeg. The filling was expertly balanced, with the creamy ricotta complementing the earthy notes of fresh spinach and the subtle warmth of nutmeg. The dish was finished with a cream sauce that beautifully tied everything together.

As our culinary journey continued, the Ossobuco alla Milanese con Risotto allo Zafferano, a classic ossobuco Milanese style with creamy saffron rice, took centre stage with its irresistible flavours and presentation. The succulent veal shanks braised to perfection were accompanied by a luscious and aromatic sauce

that enveloped the meat, infusing it with richness and depth. The meat and bone marrow effortlessly fell off the bone, offering a tender, melt-in-the-mouth experience. Serving as the perfect companion, the risotto allo Zafferano added a touch of elegance to the dish. The creamy rice, delicately infused with saffron, boasted a vibrant golden hue and a subtle floral aroma. Cooked al dente, each grain retained its texture while effortlessly absorbing the flavours of the broth. Combining the tender ossobuco, the luxurious bone marrow, and the tantalising risotto creates a symphony of flavours that will leave you craving more; I'll bet you that. This dish is a true testament to the culinary wonders that can be achieved when tradition meets innovation. It is a dish that demands to be savoured, celebrated and shared, for it embodies the very essence of Italian gastronomy.

Dessert proved to be the perfect grand finale for our meal. The Tiramisu, a classic Italian indulgence, velvety and irresistibly decadent, is a timeless classic that has captured the hearts and taste buds of dessert enthusiasts in Doha. The cocoa powder's bitter-sweetness and the coffee's robust essence beautifully complemented the sweet and creamy mascarpone with the expertly chosen ladyfingers. The mingling of these elements created a perfect balance, ensuring that no single flavour overpowered the others. Every bite was a delightful combination of subtle sweetness and a gentle coffee kick, leaving a lingering, satisfying taste long after the last spoonful. The attention to detail in achieving the perfect balance was evident in every bite, ensuring an authentic experience that transports you to the streets of Italy. The attentive staff added to the immersive ambience, providing

impeccable service throughout the evening. Whether you're seeking a romantic dinner or a gathering with friends, BiCE offers an ideal setting for an unforgettable, authentic Italian dining experience. And complementing the culinary excellence is an extensive cellar featuring a well-curated selection of Italian grapes. The sommelier was knowledgeable and provided excellent recommendations, pairing each course flawlessly – a treat, whether you’re a connoisseur or an enthusiastic novice. ✤

JOURNEY TO THE SOUTHERN MEDITERRANEAN

• DINING DELIGHT
Michael Santos visited Dar Yema, a hidden gem in the heart of Doha Oasis, that introduces the vibrant world of Magharebian cuisine.

From the moment you step through the door, you are immediately transported back in time, with the interiors showcasing carpets and doors that are more 200 years old and sourced from Morocco. These authentic and well-preserved artefacts add a sense of history and tradition to the restaurant's unique atmosphere, transporting diners to bygone ages and faraway places.

We were greeted by General Manager Hamza Harrabi with warm hospitality, an inviting ambience, and a menu that highlighted the rich flavours and aromas of the Southern Mediterranean region. Each dish at Dar Yema is crafted with care and precision, which shows in the explosion of flavours that dance on your palate. Whether indulging in the savoury tagines, sampling the aromatic couscous or relishing the perfectly grilled meats, each bite takes you on a journey through the diverse culinary traditions of Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria. This rich and aromatic cuisine reflects the historical influences of Berber, Arab, Andalusian and French cultures, resulting in a captivating fusion of flavours and ingredients, which elevate every dish to new heights, leaving a lasting impression.

To start our meal, we had the Harira soup, a traditional Moroccan broth that was hearty and comforting, rich in flavours, with a delightful combination of lentils, tomatoes and aromatic spices. The tender pieces of meat added depth to the dish, while the fresh herbs provided a refreshing finish. It was the perfect way to awaken the taste buds and set the stage for the culinary journey ahead. Next, we indulged in the Eggplant Zaalouk, another classic Moroccan dish that exceeded my expectations. The eggplant was perfectly cooked, resulting in a creamy and smoky texture. The combination of tomatoes, garlic, and spices elevated the

flavours, creating a harmonious balance that was both robust and satisfying. The Eggplant Zaalouk was a true delight and an indication of the restaurant's expertise in highlighting the ingredients' natural flavours.

The Loubia with tomato and prawns was another standout starter. The dish featured tender beans (loubia) sautéed with tomatoes and succulent prawns. The flavours were fresh and vibrant, with a touch of sweetness from the tomatoes. The prawns added a delightful seafood element to the dish, creating a perfect harmony of flavours. It was a light and refreshing starter that excited us for the main dishes.

Moving on to the main courses, the Pastilla Dar Yema chicken was a true show-stopper. The pastry was crisp and golden, encasing a flavourful filling of tender chicken, almonds and aromatic spices. The combination of sweet and savoury was simply divine. The dish was beautifully presented, and each bite was a delightful explosion of texture and taste sensations. It was a true celebration of Southern Mediterranean culinary artistry. The Beef Fillet with crushed potato and truffle oil was a carnivore's dream. The succulent meat was cooked to perfection, tender and juicy. The potato added a creamy and comforting element, while the drizzle of truffle oil elevated the dish's earthy aroma. The combination of flavours and textures was superb, making it a memorable main course that satisfied both the palate and the soul. Chicken Tajine with Lemon and Olives was another remarkable dish. The chicken was incredibly tender and succulent, and the flavours were bright and vibrant. The tanginess of the lemon and the saltiness of the olives created a harmonious combination that elevated the overall taste profile. The dish balanced acidity and richness, making each bite a delight. The tender vegetables cooked alongside the chicken added a pleasant textural contrast.

Lastly, the Tunisian Lamb Couscous was an accurate representation of this cuisine. The tender lamb was cooked to melt-in-your-mouth perfection, and the couscous was light and fluffy. The dish was generously seasoned with aromatic spices, creating a symphony of flavours that danced on the tongue. The accompanying vegetables added freshness. It was a comforting and satisfying main course that demonstrated the restaurant's commitment to traditional Magharebian flavours. The taste had a depth that showcased skilful preparation and attention to detail. Beyond the tantalising flavours, Dar Yema delivers its dishes with creative flair. Each plate is a masterpiece as they use exclusive dishware by Serghini. The restaurant takes pride in presenting its food from beautifully crafted plates and bowls, adding a touch of elegance to every serving.

A notable mention is also due to the talented Chef Jaouad Boulaayat, who leads the culinary team. and the impeccable service of Sofiane. Chef Boulaayat has honed his skills working alongside renowned chefs, including Yanick Aleno, a threeMichelin-starred chef at the Royal Mansour in Morocco. His expertise and experience contribute to the exceptional quality and flavours of the dishes served at the restaurant where guests can expect a culinary journey crafted with precision and artistry under Chef Boulaayat's guidance.

All these elements combine to make dining at Dar Yema a truly memorable experience that marries art, culture and exceptional cuisine. ✤

ESCAPE TO BLISS

Liz O’Reilly was among the first group of GCC-based writers given a sneak peek at the new Avani+ Fares Maldives Resort and found a little piece of paradise waiting to be discovered.

• TRAVEL

The Maldives is an archipelago of 26 natural, ringlike atolls and, on arrival at Velana International Airport, we were to board a seaplane to this newest offering from Minor Hotels. A first for me, I was excited for the 35-minute seaplane journey which was a little bumpy, a lot noisy but absolutely enchanting as it afforded us endless views of the azure blue Indian Ocean and its sprinkling of small island atolls.

Avani, part of Minor Hotels of Thailand, is a wellestablished hospitality brand with properties in more than 15 countries and now it is adding the plus to its brand –offering everything Avani is known for, plus a little more. From the handpicked staff – ebullient GM Riaan Drever personally interviewed all the team members, ensuring we encountered a crew who imparted a seriously high-quality yet family feel of ‘service with love’ – to the oh-so-telling little extras such as the abundant drinking water supplied in re-useable glass bottles, stamped with the legend ‘Liquid Therapy’ and printed with information on water saving and recycling (the whole resort has a zero-plastic-waste policy), we could truly feel the ‘plus’ factor.

On the resort’s jetty, we were greeted by numerous staff forming hearts with their hands to welcome us (did I mention that here, everything is done with love?!) and proffering refreshing cold towels and fruity drinks. What a delightful welcome!

My Island Home

Blissfully, the island has no cars, so we hopped onto a golf buggy and headed to our accommodation. My Sea View Studio Villa was surrounded by lush green foliage which offered both privacy as well as a heavenly fresh scent, particularly during the monsoon cloudbursts.

The big comfy bed with its abundant fluffy pillows looked directly out of floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors to my own private infinity pool. And an almost secret path led to the beach, a glimpse of the aquamarine waves just visible from my private deck.

The villa offered everything you could possibly need for a comfortable stay from a kettle and coffee machine to an iron and flat-screen TV. Again, going that little bit further and demonstrating the resort’s eco credentials, I was greeted by a small pot containing delicious, candied orange peel dipped in dark chocolate – a note explaining that rather than wasting fruit peels, the chefs come up with innovative ways to use them.

The villa’s décor, similarly to all those we visited across the island’s multiple accommodation options, was muted and comfortable. Pale woods and high-quality materials belying the serious amount of thought that had gone into every detail from the pre-set air conditioning, which automatically switches off if a door is left open, to the generously sized sofa that could easily convert to a bed. A tasteful wall mural in shades of blues for the sea and pale, creamy yellows, evoking the sand and sunshine, was a reminder of the paradise beyond my door.

TRAVEL •

And the bathroom. Oh, the bathroom! Of course, there were the usual amenities – gorgeously soft, fluffy robes and towels so huge I could literally wrap myself from neck to toes, a wide-headed rain shower that must have been at least 50cm across and a range of lotions and potions from Malin + Goetz, held in refillable stoneware containers, each smelling more fabulous than the last. But, the absolute star of the show for me was the outside wet room, accessed either from within the villa or via a separate external door. Equipped with both a rain shower and a huge, deep bathtub. Trust me, if you visit, as you really should, there are few experiences quite like luxuriating in such a tub beneath the star-filled Maldivian sky, especially during a warm rainstorm, should you be so lucky.

Time To Relax

When you’ve had a full day of work followed by an overnight flight (or, to be honest, just because you’re on holiday and you feel like it), what better way to relax than with a trip to the spa. Shortly after arrival, a massage was in order. Sipping on a refreshing, fruity drink, I filled in a tablet with my health details and then settled onto one of the most comfortable massage beds I’ve ever encountered for an hour of blissful kneading with perfect pressure and warmly scented, aromatic oil. The AvaniSpa has a medispa room, treatment villas, steam and sauna with options including pain management and IV drips alongside the more conventional spa offerings.

I also tried an evening relaxation session with singing bowl sound therapy on the beach. I have to admit I was a bit sceptical but with the breathing techniques imparted by expert instructor Shalin, who also conducts sunrise yoga, coupled with the resonant vibration from the bowls, I found myself completely calmed and tranquil. A pretty amazing experience that I would highly recommend. The resort also has a fully equipped gym but, I have to admit, that’s not my idea of relaxation!

And So To Eat

On our first day we ate lunch at The Skipjack Bar, a gorgeous space which sits beside the infinity pool and looks directly out onto ocean waves putting on a show of every shade of cerulean you can imagine. At night, the wooden decking glows with myriad pin-prick lights, mirroring the starfilled sky above. For the friendly staff, nothing is too much trouble. On one of our visits, we asked to go off-menu to try some genuine Maldivian fare and were almost immediately presented with two delicious local curry dishes. A truly sociable spot, we later had a wonderful evening of dining and dancing to the tunes of a DJ who, wonder of wonders, actually accepted requests and took great delight in getting a diverse group of guests throwing some shapes and mingling on the dance floor. Another night there was karaoke! This really is a place to let loose and make memories.

The menu at Skipjack is diverse and I would challenge

anyone not to find something to enjoy. My personal recommendation, however, would be the tuna tataki with its light citrus/soy dressing. Don’t miss out on the cheesy truffle potato wedges, which are every bit as good as they sound. And the chocolate cake, deeply indulgent and fully satisfying.

Since we were there for a soft opening ‘first look’, Skipjack was also where we got to sample the menu for Charcoal, which was still to open. A fabulous concept which will involve dining around a large charcoal grill on which foods are cooked over coals made from the island’s plentiful coconuts – Fares island, on which Avani+ Fares sits, is an ancient coconut plantation. We were treated to a veritable feast which included one of the best tuna tartares I have ever tasted – and that includes fresh off the docks in Tokyo. The concoction in which the fish was cured was absolutely sublime. Being Charcoal, there was also a lush selection of steaks and other meats as well as plenty of veggie options.

Ocean Terrace is the resort’s main restaurant where we breakfasted royally each day. From eggs cooked every way you can think of to smoked salmon or a mini-Wagyu steak and from homemade granola and overnight chia pudding to Maldivian specials such as Mashuni – tuna and coconut sambal – and pancakes with local coconut honey, everything was superbly fresh and tasty. You could choose to sit inside the bright and airy dining room or head out to the deck and eat facing the beach. A perfect way to start the day.

Avani -Three Bedroom Sunset Overwater Pool VillaLiving room

This venue was also where we tried the menu of the stillto-open Tribe. Another great concept, a space where ‘tribes from all over the world meet, bringing their food and drinks to share with each other’. Staged around a stunning, outdoor, wigwam-style pavilion bar, Tribe offers a selection of sharing-style plates from Thai to Japanese, from the plains food of Colorado, the tribal dishes of the Amazon River and the valley foods of the Basque country to Middle Eastern favourites. I would particularly recommend the Charcoal Grilled Leeks with chimichurri and smoked almonds from the Amazon section, a first for me since I don’t usually like leeks and was amazed to find these so tender and tasty. And, even better, each section of the menu comes with its own suggested beverage pairings to perfectly complement the regional flavours. On our last night, we were thoroughly spoiled with a truly exceptional Adrift dinner on the beach. I’ve mentioned the amazing skies several times, but you really need to experience the stars in a place where there is no light pollution to appreciate their utterly breathtaking beauty. A table was laid for us on the sands and we were serenaded by a talented guitarist as the waves rippled gently on the shore. Avani+ Fares has various other outlets too, including Petit Bistro the first kids-only restaurant in the Maldives catering to young guests with healthy and universally loved dishes. This is alongside an extensive dedicated area where young visitors will be fully entertained at AvaniKids and Teens Club.

The Land Of The Reef

Of course, no visit to the Maldives would be complete without some maritime adventure. And, with Avani+ Fares situated on the Baa Atoll, which is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, we were more than eager to explore under the watchful eyes of dive master Jean and his professional team. We headed out by boat to snorkel in the warm waters, hoping to spot the plentiful manta rays which call this spot home. Though they evaded us on this visit, we did encounter sea turtles and several species of colourful fish. Harmless sharks and dolphins also inhabit these waters and, on a later sunset cruise, we were lucky enough to spot dolphins at play. Watching the sunset over our paradise island as monsoon storm clouds built behind us was a truly magical experience.

We snorkelled but Avani+ Fares has full dive facilities and will also offer PADI diving courses. And, for those who prefer their adventures above the waves, there is a fully equipped water sports centre offering the likes of standup paddle boarding, kayaking and windsurfing as well as a range of fishing options.

And So, Farewell

As you can probably tell, I was thoroughly impressed by this new and highly thoughtful property. The weather was perfect, mostly sunny with gentle breezes and the occasional monsoon cloudburst. The staff are exceptional and the location breathtaking. Avani+ Fares Maldives Resort, I can’t thank you enough! ✤

A PARADISE AMONGST THE PALMS

Breathtaking views, five-star service, luxury amenities, fine-dining, first-class massage treatments and easy access to the vibrant city of Dubai is all on offer at the Al Bandar Rotana hotel.

• TRAVEL
TRAVEL •

FACT was invited by the prestigious Al Bandar Rotana hotel in Dubai to spend three nights at their exceptional venue, an invitation that not only gifted us with a great opportunity to fully appreciate the pristine accommodation, but to further experience the wonders of this flourishing emirate.

First Impressions

Welcomed by friendly and attentive staff members with sincere smiles, we were well looked after from the moment we arrived. Before entering the lobby area, we took a moment to absorb the modern and architecturally striking hotel, perfectly positioned on the north shore of Dubai Creek, the mere sight of which promises a firstclass experience.

Rooms & Suites

Our hassle-free yet informative check in lasted all of five minutes and we soon found ourselves en route to our rooms.

The Al Bandar Rotana is a five-star hotel featuring 190 uniquely designed rooms and suites, all of which exude a luxurious feel. We were fortunate enough to be given a quick tour of the various options, which revealed their spacious nature and large range of modern amenities. The hotel kindly housed me in a Creek View One Bedroom Suite that not only included a signature Rotana kingsize bed, a 49-inch flat-screen TV, high-speed internet, a coffee machine and many other comforts, but also offered unrivalled views of both the city and Dubai Creek.

Fine Dining

Amongst the extensive amenities located within the hotel’s walls, are no less than five high-end culinary venues. Over the course of our stay, we were privileged to experience four of these restaurants, all of which proved to be exceptional.

Salt & Pepper

Our first culinary experience was to be at Salt & Pepper, an all-day dining venue serving international cuisine from all over the globe.

Lucky enough to partake in two dining experiences during our four days’ stay, we were truly satisfied by both our continental breakfast, and open buffet lunch. Watching the chefs prepare dishes at live cooking stations added to the fresh feel of the feasts on offer.

Gusto Italian Restaurant

What struck us first about our visit to Gusto was the genuine Italian-style hospitality we received and the laidback atmosphere. Located on the 18th floor of the hotel, this impressive dining destination – with its al fresco terrace – boasts one of the most spectacular views of the city’s skyline, along with the waterway. During our dinner, we sampled several of Gusto’s

signature dishes including Spaghetti all’astice datterino, a delicious pasta dish comprising pan-seared lobster, lobster bisque, cherry tomato, basil and a liquor flambé that really excited the taste buds. The antipasti Burrata e tartufo is another must-mention dish as is the Risotto di mare, a seafood risotto with a healthy kick of garlic, which had our mouths watering at the delicious aroma before it even reached the table, and the Tartufo e burrata, truffle pizza, featuring an unusual topping of pumpkin puree alongside the wonderfully fresh burrata and black truffle. Truly delicious!

Morgan's

Morgan’s Gastropub – the only one of its kind in the Dubai Creek area – provides guests with a unique menu of shared plates, premium beverages and signature mixed drinks, all served up in a hip, warehouse-style venue which we were told is ‘the place to be seen’ – it was certainly buzzing when we visited.

Opting for a simple yet succulent choice, we went for the House Signature Cut beef rib-eye complete with herbroasted potatoes and black pepper sauce, complemented by a side order of halloumi fries. Delightful hardly begins to describe the experience, and we thoroughly enjoyed the company of not only the attentive staff, but many of the other patrons as well.

It's worth noting that Morgan’s has offers running throughout the week, such as Sausage by the Meter with house hops, which was very tempting.

Vanilla Lobby Lounge

During our stay, we were presented with several opportunities to visit the Vanilla Lobby Lounge, a relaxed, comfortable and serene venue, perfect for a quiet moment or to catch up on emails.

Offering a full Starbucks menu, along with a range of house dishes, we took full advantage of the highly-trained resident barista's skill set to try some of the finest coffees we have ever experienced.

Five-Star Amenities

Although we didn’t have time to enjoy all the first-class amenities on offer at the hotel, we were afforded the opportunity to tour many of them.

Event & Meeting Rooms

The Al Bandar Rotana hotel houses six fully equipped event and meeting rooms that not only offer a flexible set-up, but an abundance of space and natural light. These venues cater to a wide range of occasions including conferences, workshops, seminars and board meetings.

Bodylines Fitness & Wellness Club

Another highly impressive feature of the property is the Bodylines Fitness & Wellness Club.

This high-end venue, complete with a beautiful view of Dubai Creek, features a fully equipped gymnasium, an outdoor swimming pool, a sauna, a steam room and three massage rooms.

The Magic of Dubai

By the time our experience drew to an end, we had made sure to explore the vibrant city of Dubai, taking in the spectacular architecture, bustling souqs, massive malls and high-end restaurants. Despite several previous visits, we felt this had been our first opportunity to really appreciate so much of what the city has to offer thanks to the excellent central location of Al Bandar Rotana hotel.

CAT GOT THE…

We caught up with the artist behind @Gollythecat, Juifa Hana Binti Muhamad Jamal, whose works were featured in a recent exhibition by Malaysian artists hosted at Katara.

How long have you been in Qatar and what brought you here?

I’ve been in Qatar for almost nine years now. I have been a trailing spouse since 2014 and my husband's work has taken me to London, Cairo and now Doha.

Please tell us about the start of your creative journey.

From the time I could crawl, I have had a profound love for watercolours, gouache and coloured pencils. These artistic mediums have been a constant part of my life, and I have cultivated the habit of maintaining a visual diary in journals and sketchbooks since my high school years. Interestingly, even my geography, biology and chemistry notebooks are adorned with vibrant illustrations and colourful maps! For nearly 10 years, I worked in the oil and gas industry as an electrical and instrument engineer. However, I made the decision to transition into the role of primary caregiver for my two children. Throughout this time, I have continued to document everything I see and experience in my trusty sketchbook. When I arrived in Doha, I was greeted by a whole new environment. At first glance, it may have seemed

barren, but upon closer inspection, its true beauty became evident. It was in this place that I felt an unparalleled closeness to our Creator, unburdened by life's many distractions.

Who is Golly the cat?

Golly holds a special place in my heart as the most cherished cat of my adolescent years. My deep affection for animals extends to a profound love for cats in particular. Hence, why I chose Golly The Cat as my pseudonym. When it comes to my artistic endeavours, I strive to create honest and authentic pieces that draw inspiration from the world around me. Everyday objects, the beauty of nature and the people I encounter all serve as sources of inspiration for my art. It’s through my creations that I seek to establish a connection, allowing others to relate to the stories and emotions. Cats possess an abundance of charming personalities, and I often envision them as my feline counterparts, each with their own unique jobs, backgrounds and hobbies. What fascinates me the most is portraying cats in a human-like form, capturing their essence in a relatable manner.

fact magazine 84 • ARTS & CULTURE

Please tell us about some of your other projects – menus / cookbooks / maps.

My art encompasses my passions for cats, food, architecture and maps. I love painting food, often transforming my illustrations into cookbooks, creating cherished keepsakes for my children. Fascinated by Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern architecture, I diligently capture these captivating structures in my sketchbooks. In addition, I find joy in depicting daily life and capturing the local culture in my paintings. Map making is another passion, where I meticulously hand paint maps in watercolour. Each is meticulously researched, featuring well-known attractions and local recommendations. Furthermore, I explore various themes in my map creations, such as food maps, maps showcasing heritage traders and even recreations of antique maps. With each artistic endeavour, I pour my heart and soul into depicting the subjects that inspire me most.

You were recently part of an exhibition at Katara – how did that come about? Was it your first exhibition in Qatar? How did it feel to see your work in such a prestigious setting?

The Malaysians in Qatar Visual Arts exhibition (MVAE) is a groundbreaking collaboration between the Embassy of Malaysia in Qatar, Katara and Malaysian artists in Qatar. Themed Malaysia Mempersona|Mesmerising Malaysia, it celebrates Malaysia's distinctiveness through its history, landscapes and cultural diversity. Alongside the main exhibition, there is a separate showcase dedicated to capturing the artists' experiences and memories in Qatar. Being selected as one of the exhibitors is an incredible opportunity that fills me with immense gratitude. Seeing my artwork in the spotlight is a truly surreal experience and receiving praise and commendations from visitors, feels like an invaluable gift.

What do you like to do when you are not creating? Besides creating, my main passion is volunteering for a non-profit women's group called Tuesday Active Group (Doha). I am one of the founders. Doha is so unique, that ladies from various different backgrounds and nationalities (almost 40 countries) are able to enjoy doing activities together and forge everlasting friendships. From walks in the parks to dragon boating to museum visits, we have it all covered. We empower ladies in Doha and are always passionate to enrich each other’s lives from the get-go. ✤

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One

Need to Know:

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is a 2023 American spy action thriller film that sees agent Ethan Hunt and his team embark on their most dangerous mission yet against a mysterious, all-powerful enemy that could take control of the future and completely change the fate of the world as we know it.

Director: Christopher McQuarrie

Cast : Tom Cruise, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Rebecca Ferguson, Hayley Atwell, Vanessa Kirby, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Henry Czerny

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Dead Reckoning is the sequel to Mission: Impossible –Fallout (2018) and the seventh instalment in the Mission: Impossible film series. Through the previous movies, Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team (a hush-hush American spy agency) have successfully saved the world numerous times against the most formidable of adversaries, but this time around they find themselves against the most sinister one yet – a powerful rogue artificial intelligence (AI) called the Entity. The plot tackles a well-known and real fear in which cutting-edge technology brings into existence an AI that’s capable of immeasurable good, but instead is used as a terrifying new weapon that could threaten all of humanity if in the wrong hands, or even worse, if it takes on a mind of its own and progresses out of our control. While the dangerous AI runs amok, a specific key that’s split into two halves can be used to manipulate it. One of those halves is about to be sold on the black market, and Hunt and his team have to intercept the key as well as figure out where the second half is and get to it before any of the buyers with nefarious intentions secure them first. The movie is an exciting blockbuster and boasts some of the franchise’s most memorable action sequences.

Oppenheimer

Need to Know:

Oppenheimer is a biographical thriller drama based on the 2005 biography, American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. The movie chronicles the life of the theoretical physicist who was pivotal in developing the first nuclear weapons as part of the US’ Manhattan Project, thereby ushering in the Atomic Age.

Director: Christopher Nolan

Cast : Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Rami Malek, Kenneth Branagh

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Written and directed by Christopher Nolan – known for crafting mind-bending films such as The Prestige, Inception and Interstellar – this latest offering follows the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), the director of the Los Alamos Laboratory during the Manhattan Project, from a curious young man questioning the physical nature of stars and other celestial bodies and the laws and theories of physics to the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the nuclear fallout post that event. The movie has been specially filmed in a combination of IMAX 65mm and 65mm large-format film—including, for the first time, sections in IMAX black-and-white analogue photography. As with his previous works, Nolan has intentionally utilised extensive practical effects and minimal computer-generated imagery (CGI) to create this cinematic masterpiece. The movie, although 180 minutes long, is lean, relentless and doesn’t waste a single scene. The amazing cast of some of the best actors currently working, have put in top notch performances complementing the movie’s cinematography, outstanding score and razor-sharp editing. Not only is Oppenheimer one of Nolan’s best works to date but is also an exceptional demonstration of film-making at its finest.

ON THE RECORD

COUNTRY

Drink The River

A fresh, perceptive take on country music best describes this nine-track album, Gabe Lee’s fourth studio creation released via Torrez Music. While it has all the trappings of the heart-warming genre such as raspy vocals in a Southern accent and the freestyle strumming of the banjo, it also offers a modern take on this style, with instruments such as the violin and cello.

All I Can Do Is Write About It features the steel-cold tunes of the harmonica, offering a unique blues touch. On Merigold , undulating, stringsy notes lend the track a native American-type vibe; the sound rings deep, sending you into a trance-like state.

Lidocaine steers away from the usually peppy country style; the result – a soothing ointment for the troubled heart. On this song, Gabe takes a walk down memory lane, making amends with his loved ones.

The Wild is a number for the road, the lyrics showcasing the thoughts of someone who is on his way home, dreaming of what he expects to see. The music, easygoing although with impatient beats, complements the words.

A thought-provoking monologue, the title track features Gabe thinking aloud. Childhood memories and more are interwoven with banjo tunes. A unique sound that also offers the comfort of familiarity, Drink The River is a musical wonder to behold.

ALTERNATIVE/INDIE

Eye On The Bat

The American band’s fourth album, released via Polyvinyl Records, is in keeping with their characteristic ‘journal rock’ style – like writing a diary but musically. The album is said to be informed by the stress and tension of the time when the pandemic hit in early 2020. However, one can expect more than just angsty rock.

Right About You is a slow-paced, pensive song with soft acoustics and toneddown drum beats to match the mood.

On the title track, lead member, vocalist and guitarist Ellen Kempner, spins the well-known phrase: “all tell you to keep watching for the ball/ But we know better than that/ Keep your eye on the bat”.

The Clutch is a rock anthem with punchy electronic guitar sets and ballistic cymbals. They complement the theme – heart-break, a recurring inspiration throughout.

Independence Day is a track in the same vein, dealing with breakups. Music-wise too it showcases rock elements.

On Route 22, Zoë Brecher counts the band in with three clicks of the drum sticks and what ensues is a teenage love song; there’s playfulness, highlighted by the shakers and tambourine, a bit of insecurity and more.

All in all, Eye On The Bat offers Palehound’s signature blend of raw emotion and great music, while keeping things diverse, which makes it a fun musical offering.

THRILLER/MYSTERY

Good Bad Girl

We like the tagline on this “Sometimes bad things happen to good people, so good people have to do bad things.”

In a novel from Alice Feeney, we’d expect nothing less than a page-turner full of twists and turns as we try to unravel the 20-year-old case of a stolen baby which is somehow linked to the modern-day murder of a care home resident.

Fellow oldie and reluctant care home resident Edith, her estranged daughter, Clio, and dishonest but lovable carer Patience, must work together to solve the mystery.

ROMANCE/FICTION

The Blonde Identity

This has beach read written all over it and we’ll be taking it on our hollybobs. A road trip rom-com starring the titular blonde who wakes up in Paris with a splitting headache and no memory. She soon discovers she’s the identical twin of a rogue spy, which, of course, leads to all manner of trouble with a criminal gang trying to kill her and the world’s intelligence agencies trying to catch her.

Her only option to save her skin and, hopefully, clear her sister’s name is to team up with a grumpy but gorgeous very secret agent.

BREAKING THE ICE

For the serious aficionado, Montblanc introduces its Only Watch 2023 timepiece but there’s a catch (or two).

To see it, you’ll not only have to bid on it, you’ll also need an ice pick to get to it!

This year marks the 10th Only Watch charity auction, a biennial event that has raised over QR405 million to date. Only Watch was created in 2005 by Luc Pettavino –and under HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco’s high patronage – to auction one-off timepieces to raise funds supporting researchers around the world to accelerate their work to find a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

2023 is the fourth time Montblanc has taken part and this year’s offering is truly unique – an 1858 Geosphere 0 Oxygen debuting an innovative middle case material that has captured CO2 inside. And if that isn’t ‘cool’ enough, the unique piece is encased in a block of ice (safe breakable glass) devoid of oxygen, meaning the future owner will need to smash it open with an ice pick or leave the horological masterpiece captured in time. The new case material is created using a pioneering technological development that captures CO2 from biogas production and mineral wastes from recycling factories. The obtained powder containing CO2 is then combined with ultra-light and ultra-resistant carbon fibre creating a composite material shaped exclusively into a watch middle case: the CARBO2.

The 43.5mm case comes with a luminous glacier blue outline of Mount Everest on the side that only the wearer can see. A beautiful picture of Mount Everest also adorns the titanium case back and, next to Mount Everest, the 13

other highest peaks of the world are marked in colour. The one-of-a-kind watch joins Montblanc’s series of zerooxygen timepieces and will introduce a new collection in April 2024.

This unique piece features several benefits for explorers who need their equipment to work in harsh environments. Zero oxygen inside the case not only eliminates fogging, which can occur with drastic temperature changes at altitude, but also prevents oxidization. Each zero-oxygen timepiece comes with a certificate as proof of this special, yet invisible, technology.

The timepiece comes with a fluted bi-directional black ceramic bezel with the compass cardinal points and OW for Only Watch depicting West. It is fitted with an electric blue glacier pattern dial and the worldtime meridians in a spectrum of colours. Completing the look is a black interchangeable textile strap on which the top material is made of 100% recycled PET.

In addition to the timepiece, the lucky bidder will receive an ice pick from Montblanc’s Mark Maker, world recordbreaking alpinist Nimsdai Purja, who is the fastest man to climb all 14 of the world’s highest peaks above 8,000 metres, a record he broke in six months and six days. He also ascended Mount Everest without supplementary oxygen for a collaboration with Montblanc in 2022. ✤

Painting Perspectives Stand up for your right! Microscopic Madness

French artist, Saype (Say Peace) has wowed the world with his latest creation on the Swiss mountain slopes. The self-taught artist used chalk and charcoal to paint two giant frescos of children doodling. While both the kids have the same view so to speak, they see different things – one draws the moon and stars and the other, trees and mountains. It shows the importance

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) have been on strike for more than a week. Their demands include a revised residual payment system to match the profits that giant studios such as Netflix and Disney make. While the strike poses a risk in terms of losses and livelihoods, it's a step that had to be taken.

Ask any woman! A bag that fits everything, from the housekeys to last night’s leftover salsa and guac from the Mexican eatery, is a dream! Ironically, MSCHF, an American art collective based in Brooklyn, has fashioned a microscopic handbag that’s, in their words, ‘smaller than a grain of salt’. The neon green creation was created using 3D printing

of diverse perspectives, an important lesson especially in today's world where differences are seen as a threat. Saype launched the Beyond Walls project in 2019, where he spray painted two giant hands clasping, on the ground in various cities. The idea behind his grass paintings is to draw attention and make an impact without leaving a trace in nature – new grass keeps growing. An artist who backs sustainability – we're in love!

Perhaps this will put the fight for their rights on the fast track. Like in India, where singers have been fighting for their right to royalties for decades. In April this year, a (historic) agreement was signed between the India Music Industry and the Indian Singers Rights Association, which states that 25% of the royalties collected will be shared with the singers! Looks like Bob Marley was onto something when he said: "Get up, stand up/ Stand up for your right".

technology and modelled after luxury style brand Louis Vuitton’s (LV) famed OnTheGo tote bag. While we love miniature art, we were shocked to find out that it was auctioned for a whopping USD60,000 plus dollars! Now, spending big money on a real LV, we can understand – it’s functional. But what could you possibly fit into a microscopic bag that’s less than 0.03 inches? Perhaps, a big ego!
