Revving Up Ramadan

“I've always been asked, what is my favourite car? and I've always said, ‘The next one.’” – Carroll Shelby “

As the Holy Month settles over the island, a familiar calm takes hold –evenings stretch a little longer, gatherings feel a little warmer and, of course, a calendar filled with reasons to head out once the sun goes down. This March, our pages are packed with ways to make the most of it all.

Our cover story turns the spotlight firmly onto the automotive world. From generous Ramadan campaigns to limited-time extras, dealerships across the island are rolling out some of their most competitive offers of the year. If you’ve been considering an upgrade, this could be your moment. We’ve rounded up the hottest deals to help you navigate the options and drive into the season with confidence.

Keeping the engines running, we put two very different machines through their paces –the impressive Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4MATIC Coupé and the dynamic Jetour G700 Flagship. We also bring you the latest car launches on the island from the Mitsubishi Destinator to the ARCFOX and the all-new Toyota RAV4. The spirit of Ramadan also comes to BIC with the high-octane action of Burnout Nights and Drag and Drift Nights, promising flying sparks and screaming tyres.

But enough about cars, the island is also thriving on the cultural scene as the Spring of Culture marks its 20th anniversary with a three-month programme, including the muchanticipated debut of Corteo by Cirque du Soleil, just in time for the Eid celebrations. Spice up your Ramadan evenings with the ongoing Manama Nights, now in its third edition, while plenty is strumming on the music front, with Doja Cat’s Bahrain debut, Tul8te live and the Under the Palms indie festival. Don’t miss my interview with local indie alternative band, Mission to the Moon, ahead of their performance at the event.

With Eid holidays on the horizon, our travel pages inspire six short escapes for those planning a break, alongside a stay at Budapest’s storied Anantara New York Palace. Closer to home on the dining scene, we sampled everything delicious from Flames & Flavours at The Art Hotel & Resort to CLAW BBQ at Hilton Bahrain and a midweek lunch at Salumeria Papà.

And, as always, stay up to date with the latest in fashion, beauty, tech and entertainment. Here’s wishing you a happy and joyful Eid Al Fitr!

Bye for now…

CIRQUE DU SOLEIL COMES TO BAHRAIN!

Corteo by Cirque du Soleil is set to make its debut in the Kingdom this Eid Al Fitr, bringing acrobatic artistry, live music and theatrical spectacle to Exhibition World Bahrain.

The island is gearing up to welcome Cirque du Soleil’s internationally acclaimed production, Corteo, bringing breathtaking acrobatics, striking visuals and powerful storytelling to audiences in the Kingdom for the first time.

Announced by the Bahrain Tourism & Exhibitions Authority (BTEA) as part of the upcoming Eid Al Fitr holiday celebrations, this global production is organised in collaboration with Beyon Al Dana Amphitheatre and SES Live! and will run from March 22 to 28 at Exhibition World Bahrain.

Widely regarded as one of Cirque du Soleil’s most beloved productions, Corteo combines gravity-defying feats, evocative music and intricate set design in a theatrical experience celebrating imagination, wonder and the human spirit. Its arrival on the island marks the first time the production will be performed in the Kingdom, and it is set to be one of the highlights of the Eid season.

Sara Ahmed Buhiji, CEO of BTEA, expressed her delight in Bahrain being selected as the first stop on the show's Gulf tour, saying: “Corteo offers a fun and absorbing experience for the whole family, which we are happy to add to our entertainment calendar. Attracting a production of this global calibre underscores our continued commitment to advancing the objectives of Bahrain’s Tourism Strategy 2022–2026.”

Damian Bush, CEO of Beyon Al Dana Amphitheatre, commented: “Corteo by Cirque du Soleil is a production that blurs the line

between dream and reality, and we are proud to be part of the journey that brings this masterful performance to Bahraini audiences for the first time.”

Ali Haidary, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of SES Live!, said: “Corteo represents the scale, creativity and global calibre of experiences that today’s audiences are seeking, and we are proud to be part of this landmark moment that places Bahrain at the heart of the region’s live entertainment landscape.”

At the centre of Corteo is Mauro, a dreamer clown who imagines his own funeral taking place in a carnival atmosphere, attended by tender angels. As he reflects on his life, characters from his past appear in a joyful celebration. The production contrasts the grand with the intimate, the silly with the tragic and the beauty of perfection with the appeal of imperfection. The captivating live score, by turns lyrical and playful, carries the story through a timeless celebration where illusion teases reality. Tickets are available through Platinumlist (www.platinumlist.net) and are priced from BD10. ✤

BAHRAIN SET FOR INDIE FESTIVAL

Music fans are in for a treat as Under the Palms festival gears up to change how Bahrain experiences live music, spotlighting independent artists from Bahrain and across the GCC.

Mark your calendars for April 3, when three local creative forces – Good Neighbour, Artology and Mission to the Moon – join hands to host Under the Palms, an outdoor indie music festival designed to shine light on independent alternative artists in the region.

Running from 4pm to 9pm in Artology's garden space, the event will turn the open-air venue into a cultural gathering filled with live music, art, food, local vendors and good vibes. It will feature four acts representing a cross-GCC independent sound: Mission to the Moon (indie alternative act from Bahrain), Juniper’s Club (Bahrain-based indie band), Zamzam (indie folk band from Khobar, Saudi Arabia) and Neon Sfynx (Bahrain-based indie rock act). Together, they reflect the range and depth of alternative music emerging in the region.

More than a concert, the festival will include local vendor stalls offering vintage clothing, jewellery and small independent brands. Artology will also host interactive art activities with hands-on creative experiences, including charm making, painting and tie-dye. All performing acts will have merchandise available, giving attendees multiple ways to directly support the independent music scene.

At its core, Under the Palms aims to create a dedicated platform for indie and alternative musicians in Bahrain and

across the GCC. It also seeks to encourage audiences to actively support local live music and to build a culture where people pay to experience emerging artists, not only internationally renowned headliners. By bringing music, art and community engagement together, the organisers hope to strengthen the independent creative ecosystem in a meaningful way.

With Bahrain already showing strong appreciation for largescale concerts and mainstream performances, particularly at venues such as Beyon Al Dana Amphitheatre, Under the Palms hopes to shift some of that energy towards discovering and investing in regional independent talent. The goal is longterm cultural impact, normalising attendance at live shows purely for the music itself, regardless of celebrity status and supporting sustainable growth for indie artists in the region. With registration required in advance, ticket prices are BD15 during the current presale period until the last day of Eid, BD20 after Eid until the event and BD8 for children aged 10 and under. ✤

OUR TOP SIX EID GETAWAYS!

With Eid Al Fitr holidays just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to pack your bags and take a short trip away to reboot after Ramadan. Here are our top six Eid escapes to inspire your wanderlust. And the best part – they’re all a hop, skip and a jump from Bahrain.

Layali Al Sahara

ANTALYA, TÜRKIYE BEIRUT, LEBANON

Framed by the Taurus Mountains and the bright blue Mediterranean, Antalya is known as the crown jewel of the Turkish Riviera and a favourite for a relaxed coastal break.

Kaleiçi, the old town, gives the city oodles of character with its maze of cobbled streets, Ottoman-era houses, boutique hotels and jasmine-scented courtyards.

Mornings here start slowly, with small cafés offering Turkish coffee and pastries to ease you into the day. There’s no real need for a schedule. Enter through the 2,000-year-old Hadrian’s Gate and let yourself wander. Stop at Kesik Minare (the Broken Minaret) for a glimpse into Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman history. Browse small artisan shops selling ceramics, textiles and leather goods, or take a leisurely stroll down the colourful and cheerful Umbrella Street.

Follow the slope downhill towards Kaleiçi Marina, an old Roman harbour, where fishing vessels and wooden gulets bob along the water’s edge. You’ll also find boats for coastal tours, including trips to the Lower Düden Waterfall, which crashes straight into the sea, surprisingly close to the city centre. The area is lively day and night, with plenty of restaurants nearby serving grilled fish and mezze.

Of course, a trip to the beach is practically mandatory. Konyaaltı Beach is popular with its magnificent mountain backdrop, while Lara Beach is lined with resorts. If you’re up for a short drive, the ancient theatre of Aspendos still hosts performances, and families often make a day of The Land of Legends theme park. Pegasus Airlines: 7h 10m to Antalya | Multiple one-stop flights throughout the week.

Barely needing an introduction, Beirut is a familiar escape with an infectious energy, many considering it the 'Paris of the Middle East'.

The Corniche remains the city’s steady heartbeat. The almost ritualistic early evening walk, with the iconic Pigeon Rocks (Raouché Rocks) rising from the sea, is a must. It’s one of the best spots for people-watching, as families gather, runners go by and fishermen cast their lines.

Hamra Street is one of Beirut’s busiest stretches, lined with cafés, bookstores, fashion boutiques and late-night spots that stay bustling well after dark. Nearby, Mar Mikhaël and Gemmayzeh – two of the coolest neighbourhoods – offer a vibrant, arty feel, where restored heritage buildings house some of the city’s most creative restaurants, galleries and bars. Beirut Souks provides a stylish shopping spot with a touch of traditional architecture, while Zaitunay Bay is popular for scenic marina-side dinners.

Unsurprisingly, Beirut’s culinary reputation is very much well earnt. Generous mezze of olives, grilled meats, fresh herbs and creamy labneh are best enjoyed shared, with rooftop terraces and waterfront restaurants filling quickly at sunset.

For a change of pace, take a short drive to Jounieh and ride the gondola cable car to the Our Lady of Lebanon shrine, or continue north to Byblos for ancient ruins and a charming harbour.

Gulf Air: 5h 45m | Multiple one-stop flights throughout the week.

DIRIYAH, SAUDI ARABIA KOCHI, INDIA

Diriyah offers a perfect short escape that feels close to home but unlike anything you left behind. Located on the outskirts of Riyadh, it's known as the City of Earth and the birthplace of the first Saudi state – instantly recognisable for its traditional mudbrick architecture.

The historic UNESCO-listed At-Turaif district is the centrepiece. Meticulously restored to showcase the Najdi structures that served as the original home of the Al Saud Royal Family, its narrow winding lanes and courtyard houses glow beautifully at sunset. Small museums along the route tell the story of Saudi history, while guided tours are available for more insight.

Nearby, Bujairi Terrace overlooks Wadi Hanifah (once a historic waterway and now one of the largest national parks in the Kingdom) and has become one of Riyadh’s premier dining destinations, featuring refined regional and international cuisine, alongside charming retail shops in an elegant, pedestrianfriendly setting.

Diriyah feels particularly alive this time of year thanks to the ongoing Layali Al-Diriyah, part of the popular Diriyah Season held through winter into early spring. This open-air festival in Al-Murayih runs until March 23, offering gourmet pop-up restaurants, boutique stalls, live performances and art and light installations.

Gulf Air, Saudia, Flynas: 1h 15m | Direct flights throughout the week to Riyadh, then a short 20-minute drive to Diriyah.

A historic port city on India’s southwest coast, Kochi is known as the Queen of the Arabian Sea, offering a tropical retreat with centuries of maritime trade history, evident in its colonial architecture, old spice warehouses and waterfront promenades. Begin exploring at the charming seaside town of Fort Kochi, which showcases a fascinating blend of Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch and British influences, and wander its narrow streets lined with restored homes, art cafés, old churches and wooden shutters. Don’t miss the iconic Chinese fishing nets – watching them dip into the harbour at sunset under swaying coconut palms is the quintessential Kochi moment!

Take a tuk-tuk to Mattancherry to browse its antique shops and spice markets before visiting Paradesi Synagogue, known for its Belgian chandeliers and hand-painted tiles. For a touch of history, visit the neighbouring Mattancherry Palace, home to Ramayana murals and royal artefacts within its Kerala-style interiors. A short walk away is St. Francis Church, India’s oldest European church, and the more gothic Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica, known for its painted ceilings and stained glass. For a change of scene, take a slow boat ride through the tranquil backwaters of nearby Alleppey to experience traditional village life and lush greenery, or ride a ferry from Fort Kochi jetty to Vypin or Ernakulam for scenic coastal views. In the evenings, catch a Kathakali performance, a 17th-century classical dancedrama with vibrant costumes and elaborate makeup.

Gulf Air: 4h 25m | Multiple direct flights throughout the week.

MUNICH, GERMANY

Described as Die Weltstadt mit Herz (The World City with a Heart), Munich immediately puts you at ease. Lacking the frantic pace of Berlin, it offers a leisurely, high-end charm, and its efficient transport, compact centre and reassuring sense of order mean you can maximise your time from the moment you arrive.

Begin in Marienplatz, the heart of the city, where the historic Glockenspiel still marks the hour above the Neo-Gothic New Town Hall. Viktualienmarkt market provides a lively introduction to Bavarian flavours, from artisanal cheeses and sausages to seasonal fruit. From there, you can stroll through the old town’s arcades and bakeries, where a soft pretzel and coffee can easily stretch into an hour of people-watching. Then explore the luxury boutiques on Maximilianstraße – window-shopping at its finest.

The Englischer Garten, one of the world’s largest urban parks in the centre of the city, offers cycling and jogging trails along shaded paths. Join the locals in a hops garden under chestnut trees or watch surfers riding the Eisbach river wave. If you prefer palaces to parks, the Residenz München is the largest city palace in Germany, while the Baroque Nymphenburg’s long canals and manicured gardens make for a lovely afternoon stroll. Art lovers can explore the galleries of Kunstareal’s museum quarter, including the centuries-old Alte Pinakothek, while culture enthusiasts can visit the modern BMW Welt or browse the independent boutiques and trendy bars of the Glockenbachviertel district. And a day trip to the Bavarian Alps and Neuschwanstein Castle is definitely worth it if you have time. Gulf Air: 6h 15m | Multiple direct flights throughout the week.

YEREVAN, ARMENIA

Often called the Pink City due to its rose-coloured volcanic tuff (rock), Yerevan is a destination where Soviet-era grandeur meets ancient Armenian heritage. With a compact centre, it's quick and easy to explore this capital city on foot – ideal for a short but rewarding escape.

Republic Square is a lively gathering place, especially at night when its dancing fountains light up to synchronised music. Yerevan’s most recognisable landmark is the Cascade Complex, a vast limestone stairway that rises above the city and features sculpture gardens and contemporary art spaces, including the Cafesjian Center for the Arts. Climb slowly and enjoy the gorgeous views of the snow-capped Mount Ararat on the horizon.

Yerevan’s café culture is among the most sophisticated in the region; it's easy to lose track of time on the pedestrianised Northern Avenue, watching the fashionable locals go by, while enjoying Armenian coffee and pastries. Indulge in a spot of shopping at Vernissage open-air market, with stalls displaying intricate jewellery, carpets and handmade crafts, and try local food at nearby hidden basement tavernas serving dishes like Khorovats (Armenian barbecue), Lavash (traditional bread) and Tolma (stuffed leaves).

If you fancy a quick day trip, take a drive to the cliff-carved mediaeval Geghard Monastery or the classical columns of the Greco-Roman Garni Temple. Lake Sevan, meanwhile, offers fresh mountain air and fabulous views.

REFINEMENT YOU FEEL

Our test drive of the Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4MATIC Coupé explored what happens when luxury design meets everyday functionality.

In a region where SUVs are expected to balance luxury, technology and everyday usability, the Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4MATIC Coupé enters the segment with clear intent. Positioned as a premium luxury SUV focussed on refinement and modern technology, it arrives in a space where expectations are very high.

During our inspection and test drive of the AMG Line model, the GLE Coupé came across as a vehicle designed to fit naturally into daily life, while still delivering the comfort and quality expected from a Mercedes-Benz. It proved intuitive from the outset, without needing a week of manuals to feel at home.

Confidently Coupé

Walking around the GLE 450 4MATIC, the balance between SUV presence and the sleeker Coupé roofline stood out immediately. Our AMG Line test car sharpened that look with AMG body styling and 21-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels, giving it a stance that felt planted and confidently premium.

At the front, the grille and multibeam LED headlights gave the GLE a strong road presence, particularly noticeable once the sun went down and the lighting signature came to life. The flowing roofline and body shaping helped visually slim the profile, keeping the design cohesive rather than bulky.

The illuminated brand projection when opening the doors was one of those details you don’t expect to care about — until you start timing arrivals for after sunset.

Thoughtfully Premium

Once inside the luxury SUV, the interior immediately reminded us why Mercedes cabins carry the reputation they do. Leather upholstery and wood trim gave everything real depth, while the widescreen cockpit kept the dashboard modern and clean, without turning the interior into a tech demo.

The front seats impressed early on, offering ventilation and memory adjustment, meaning getting comfortable didn’t require a negotiation.

The panoramic sunroof helped create a more open feel, while strong insulation kept outside noise impressively low. Ambient lighting added just enough presence during night drives to make the space feel special without becoming distracting. Cooled cup holders were a small detail we didn’t think would matter — and then promptly did.

Designed to Assist

During our test drive, the GLE 450 4MATIC Coupé’s technology felt designed to support the drive rather than dominate it. The widescreen cockpit was clear and responsive, with information laid out in a way that made quick checks easy without demanding to be part of every moment.

The system responded quickly to inputs via the touchscreen and steering-wheel controls, and switching between navigation, media and vehicle settings felt intuitive enough that we rarely had to think about it twice. Wireless smartphone integration worked seamlessly, keeping playlists, calls and maps connected without fuss.

A head-up display added another genuinely useful layer, keeping key driving information in view without needing to glance down.

bass levels.

Power You Feel

From the moment we pressed the accelerator, the GLE 450 4MATIC Coupé made its intent clear. Power arrived smoothly and confidently, building in a way that felt effortless rather than showy, yet still quick enough to catch you pleasantly off guard. Our bodies relaxed almost immediately, while our brains quietly recalibrated to how quickly the scenery began to move. Acceleration felt strong and predictable, whether pulling away from traffic lights or joining faster-moving roads. The 4MATIC all-wheel drive system added a reassuring sense of grip, smart torque converter allowing the GLE to put its performance to the ground without fuss. What stood out most was how composed everything felt. The GLE delivered real pace while still feeling relaxed to drive, leaving us confident, comfortable — and occasionally checking the speedometer to confirm just how quickly we were moving.

Backed by Intelligence

During our time with the GLE 450 4MATIC Coupé, the driver assistance systems felt reassuringly present without ever becoming intrusive. Features like adaptive cruise control and lane support stepped in smoothly when needed, particularly

during longer stretches of driving, without giving the impression that the car was trying to take over the experience.

In traffic, the systems worked quietly in the background, reducing fatigue rather than adding alerts or unnecessary interventions. The overall effect was one of calm confidence, especially in stopstart conditions where constant inputs are usually required — and patience is often tested.

What became clear was how naturally everything integrated into the drive. Safety technology here felt like a layer of support rather than a collection of features, offering reassurance without demanding attention.

Worthy of the Badge

By the end of our time with the Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4MATIC Coupé, it was clear this is a luxury SUV that understands its audience well. It blends performance, comfort and technology in a way that feels considered rather than calculated, making everyday driving feel genuinely easy — and quietly indulgent. The GLE Coupé doesn’t try to reinvent the segment; instead, it gently reminds you why Mercedes continues to set the benchmark when refinement and real-world usability matter most. ✤

A NEW CLASS EMERGES

Fact spent time with Jetour’s G700 Flagship – the new luxury SUV making waves in the region –to discover how hybrid power and off-road ambition reshaped the modern premium 4×4.

Few recent SUV arrivals in the region have attracted as much attention as the Jetour G700 Flagship. Positioned as the brand’s most advanced model, it had already generated conversation across the Gulf before we experienced it firsthand. When it joined our Bahrain test schedule, its presence was unmistakable.

Designed to Dominate

Walking around the G700 Flagship, we were struck by the confidence of its design: upright, squared and undeniably substantial. The broad stance, generous ride height and pronounced arches gave it the authority of a true luxury 4x4, while crisp surfacing added modern definition.

A bold vertical grille, sculpted bonnet and distinctive lighting signatures reinforced its premium character, while large alloy wheels and strong shoulder lines added visual strength – proportions that tend to make neighbouring vehicles look slightly more modest by comparison. We also noted the flush detailing and tight panel integration, giving the exterior a refined, contemporary finish. At just over five metres long with 230mm of clearance, its proportions conveyed the visual authority expected of a full-size, luxury off-roader.

Comfort Without Constraint

Climbing inside, the G700 pivoted from rugged exterior to a refined, hospitality-inspired cabin. The interior emphasised space and theatre, with layered forms and expansive surfaces creating a sense of openness and comfort.

Flagship seating – including massage functions, leg rests and deep-reclining second-row captain’s chairs – created an environment closer to a contemporary lounge than a utilitarian 4x4. The six-seat layout, integrated table functions and wide centre access reinforced its touring focus, offering generous room across all rows.

Fold-flat rear flexibility, abundant cabin storage and extensive soft-touch materials elevated the sense of everyday and longdistance comfort expected of a luxury SUV in this class.

Innovation at Hand

Digital innovation formed a central part of the G700 Flagship’s appeal during our drive. The sweeping 35.4-inch skyline display and multi-screen interface created a highly immersive control environment, presenting vehicle information and functions clearly and intuitively – without requiring the sort of learning curve that often accompanies screen-heavy cabins.

The intelligent vehicle interface supported multi-screen interaction and voice control, allowing key functions to be accessed naturally while on the move. Connectivity and OTA (over-the-air) capability reinforced the system’s integrated feel during our drive.

The Lexicon 18-speaker audio system delivered rich, balanced sound throughout the cabin, while advanced multi-zone climate management maintained consistent comfort across all three rows. The overall technology suite felt intuitive and easy to live with – the kind that makes sense before you even consider looking for a manual.

Motion Made Easy

From the moment we pulled away, the G700 Flagship’s hybrid powertrain revealed its powerful character. The combination of a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine and dual electric motors delivered strong, immediate response, propelling the SUV forward with ease.

A firm press of the accelerator translated into seamless thrust, with 0-100km/h dispatched in a mere 4.6 seconds – entirely believable from behind the wheel. At times, it seemed less like a large SUV building pace and more like one simply settling into whatever speed we requested.

Beyond straight-line performance, the G700 remained composed on the road. Over uneven surfaces, the suspension absorbed impacts with controlled compliance, maintaining cabin calm, while through faster bends body movement stayed well managed and stable – the sort that leaves potholes feeling slightly outmatched.

Across our drive, the overall impression was one of relaxed authority – performance delivered with confidence and composure.

Systems that Safeguard

The G700’s stability and assistance systems contributed strongly to driver confidence across varied conditions. On looser surfaces and sand, the intelligent traction systems translated power cleanly to the ground, allowing steady forward momentum with reassuring stability – even when the surface suggested it might prefer otherwise.

Driver assistance technologies operated unobtrusively throughout our time with the vehicle. Adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping support and blind-spot monitoring worked smoothly in the background, while forward-collision mitigation systems added an extra layer of reassurance in traffic.

Visibility and manoeuvring support were equally effective. The surround-view camera and parking assistance features provided clear awareness when positioning a vehicle of this size – particularly useful in tighter spaces. Across changing surfaces and environments, the G700 consistently conveyed a sense of controlled security, combining capability with reassuring driver support.

A Flagship Defined

Over our time with the Jetour G700, it became clear this is a vehicle conceived to bridge expectations: luxury and capability, electrification and endurance, presence and practicality. It delivered strong performance, impressive comfort and genuine versatility across the varied conditions we encountered. What stood out most was how cohesively those elements came together. The G700 did not present itself as a niche off-road specialist or an urban luxury SUV but rather as a well-rounded touring flagship designed for regional driving. For buyers seeking modern technology, commanding presence and authentic multi-terrain confidence in a single package, the G700 makes a compelling case. ✤

“The

G700 consistently conveyed a sense of controlled security, combining capability with reassuring driver support.”

LOVE IT? TAG IT

Apple has finally released the second generation of its much-loved AirTag, claiming it is the most findable option yet.

Almost five years on from the release of the original – which we now all take for granted – the company has come up with a new and improved version which, to the naked eye, looks pretty much the same as before.

In essence, the world’s most popular Bluetooth tracker hasn’t changed at all, visually. But what’s definitely different is the back room, where upgrades have introduced a significantly louder speaker and a greater range. The new AirTags also support precision finding from the Find My app on the Apple Watch or iPhone, so it’s never been easier to keep track of your stuff.

And even better, the upgraded AirTags cost exactly the same as their predecessor and are compatible with all the old accessories. ✤

MUSIC AS ART

The latest in the Artist Series of turntables from Austrian powerhouse Pro-Ject Audio Systems pays tribute to one of the most influential rock bands of all time, Scorpions.

Designed for audiophiles, collectors and dedicated fans, this limited-edition turntable combines high-fidelity engineering with an exclusive Scorpions design, featuring the artwork from the band’s iconic Blackout album, that was released in 1982.

Based on the T2 turntable platform, it features a belt-drive design with advanced mechanical design and precision performance.

The CNC-machined plinth has been expanded in size to enhance stability, and it boasts a construction free of plastic components and meticulous manufacturing that eliminates any hollow spaces within, effectively preventing unwanted vibrations within the chassis. Furthermore, the glass platter is heavy, ensuring a zeroresonance design that effectively eliminates the shortcomings associated with plastic or lightweight steel alternatives.

The Scorpions turntable features a Pick it 25A moving magnet cartridge and comes with Pro-Ject’s adjustable spring-based antiskating mechanism that optimises its performance, while pure silver coil windings offer high-quality playback.

Like all the Artist Series turntables, the Scorpions version is a limited edition, so be quick if you want to get your hands on it. ✤

A VISIONARY ENTREPRENEUR

The brains behind innovative culinary concepts The Bossman and The Backroom, Abdulla Ahmed, CEO and Founder of AAA Hospitality, believes in building strong brands that stand the test of time. He shares his secrets to success, from ideation and process to his vision for the future.

You’ve built multiple concepts under AAA Hospitality. What’s your internal filter for deciding when an idea is strong enough to become a brand?

For me, an idea becomes a brand when it goes beyond just a good menu or a nice interior. I look at three main filters: identity, emotional impact and scalability. First, the concept needs a clear and distinct identity. If I can’t describe the brand in one or two sentences, it’s usually not strong enough. The concept must have a defined personality, target audience and atmosphere. Second, I look at the emotional connection. A strong brand creates a feeling, whether it’s energy, intimacy, nostalgia or excitement. If the experience is memorable and people talk about it, it has the foundation of a brand, not just a restaurant. The third filter is scalability. I ask myself: can this concept work in multiple locations without losing its identity? Are the operations simple enough to replicate? Does the menu and kitchen setup support growth? If a concept passes these three filters, clear identity, strong emotional impact and the ability to scale, then it’s strong enough to become a brand under AAA Hospitality. Otherwise, it remains just an idea.

The hospitality industry is notoriously competitive and fastmoving. What do you prioritise when turning a restaurant concept into a profitable and scalable business?

First, the concept needs a strong identity that people immediately understand. If the brand is clear, it becomes easier to design the menu, pricing and overall experience. At AAA Hospitality, each concept has its own personality and story. Second, I look at the numbers. A restaurant must be profitable at the single-unit level before thinking about expansion. That means controlling food cost, labour and ensuring the average bill supports healthy margins. Third, the operations must be simple and repeatable. If a concept depends on a specific staff position in the kitchen or operations, it won’t scale. We focus on systems, training and clear structures, so the brand can grow across multiple locations. For me, a concept is truly successful when it’s not only popular but also profitable, consistent and built to scale.

You have a new restaurant in the pipeline. What can you share about the concept, and how will it differ from your existing brands?

We’re currently developing a new concept that represents the next phase of AAA Hospitality’s growth. With The Bossman and The Backroom, we introduced two very different experiences, and the upcoming brand will continue that direction, this time with a completely new culinary identity and a more refined, contemporary feel. Our strategy is simple: we don’t open restaurants just to add locations; we build brands that introduce experiences Bahrain hasn’t seen before. Every concept is built around a strong story, atmosphere and emotional connection with the guest. The new concept follows the same philosophy but in a totally different cuisine and segment from our existing brands. It’s being developed with a distinct identity, elevated design and clear positioning, with scalability in mind once the experience and operations are fully refined.

Strong branding sits at the centre of all your ventures. How do you protect each brand’s distinct identity while running multiple businesses under one umbrella?

At AAA Hospitality, we treat each concept as a standalone brand with its own world, not just another outlet under the same company. Even though they sit under one group, the guests should never feel they’re experiencing variations of the same restaurant. Every brand has a defined identity, target audience and experience. The Bossman is energetic and social with an Italian-American core, while The Backroom is more intimate, hidden and story-driven. That clarity helps protect each brand from drifting. We also maintain dedicated brand guidelines. Each concept has its own design language, menu direction, music, uniforms and communication style. Nothing is cross used between brands, so the identities remain distinct. At the group level, AAA Hospitality focusses on standards, systems and culture. What’s shared is the quality and execution; what remains unique is the story and experience of each brand. That balance is what makes a multi-brand strategy work.

Every entrepreneur faces challenges early on. What’s a business mistake that genuinely changed the way you make decisions today?

Early on, one of the biggest mistakes I made was focussing too much on the excitement of the concept and not enough on the systems behind it. Like many entrepreneurs, I was involved in every small detail, and while that passion helped the business grow, it also meant the operation depended too much on me personally. That experience changed the way I make decisions. I realised that a restaurant is not just a concept, it’s a system. Without clear structures, reporting and defined responsibilities, growth becomes very difficult. Today, I focus much more on building strong systems, clear organisational charts and healthy unit economics before thinking about expansion. But at the same time, I still believe in being very hands-on. I stay close to the restaurants, the team and the guest experience, and that’s something I plan to continue even as we grow into more brands and locations.

You’ve seen both sides of the coin – corporate life and entrepreneurship. What pushed you to bet on yourself, and is there anything about the 9-to-5 you still miss?

My time working in the government gave me structure, discipline and a strong understanding of how large organisations operate. It taught me about systems, accountability and longterm planning lessons I still apply today while leading AAA Hospitality. But over time, I realised I was more driven by building something of my own than by following a traditional career path. I wanted the freedom to create concepts, shape experiences and make decisions that directly impact people. The shift into entrepreneurship was gradual, but once I saw the potential, it became clear this path matched my ambition. If there’s one thing I miss, it’s the feeling of contributing directly to the country. But in many ways, I still feel that today, through AAA Hospitality, we’re investing in Bahrain’s tourism scene, creating original experiences and building brands that represent the country’s

creativity and entrepreneurial spirit. That, to me, is another way of serving Bahrain – just from a different seat.

Looking ahead, how do you see the future of AAA Hospitality evolving over the next few years?

Over the next few years, I see AAA Hospitality evolving into a fully structured, multi-brand company with a presence across different dining segments. The focus is on building a portfolio of strong, original concepts, each with its own identity and position in the market. Beyond our own brands, we’re also moving into hospitality consultancy and strategic partnerships, supporting restaurant owners and investors through concept development, menu engineering, brand positioning and operational management. In some cases, we’ll invest directly in promising brands that align with our vision. In others, we’ll provide management services to help them grow in a more structured and sustainable way. The goal is to position AAA Hospitality as a brand builder and operator, not just a restaurant owner. ✤

BRINGING JOY THROUGH FOOD

Having cooked for royalty and presidents and managed pre-opening food and beverage operations, newly appointed Head Chef, Sachin Malik, has taken charge at Hilton Garden Inn Bahrain Bay. He shares his culinary plans, new dining experiences and what drives his cooking today. •

Congratulations on your new appointment. You’ve worked in Bahrain before, what made you decide to come back to the island?

Thank you. Coming back to Bahrain feels a bit like coming home. My earlier time on the island left a strong impression on me, not just professionally but on a personal level as well. What stayed with me most was the warmth of the people, the openness of the culture and the genuine pride Bahrain takes in its hospitality. Over the years, I’ve watched the Kingdom continue to evolve while staying true to its identity, and that balance is something I deeply admire. This role allows me to reconnect with a place and a market I know well, while also bringing new ideas and perspectives shaped by my experiences abroad. It feels meaningful to come back, and I’m genuinely excited to contribute to Hilton Garden Inn and the island’s ever-evolving culinary scene.

What are your plans for dining at Hilton Garden Inn, are there any coming developments you can share with us?

I’m approaching dining at Hilton Garden Inn with a lot of enthusiasm and a clear focus on creating experiences that people want to come back to. Right now, my concept is built around quality, comfort and approachability – offering well-prepared dishes throughout the day, from wholesome breakfast options to international favourites and locally inspired plates. Looking ahead, I have several developments in the pipeline that I’m really excited about. One of the key areas is celebrating local flavours. I’m working on introducing more Bahraini and regional dishes, presented in a modern, thoughtful way that respects tradition while adding a fresh perspective. I’m also planning to bring in seasonal and themed dining experiences – from ‘around the world’ nights to festive brunches. You can expect collaborations with local chefs, pop-ups and community-led events that

celebrate Bahrain’s vibrant food scene and give guests something new and memorable to enjoy each time they visit.

How do you go about developing new dishes and menus and sourcing ingredients, which can be a challenge in Bahrain’s desert climate?

Developing new dishes and menus is a very hands-on, collaborative process for me. It always starts with understanding who I’m cooking for – my guests, their tastes and how they like to dine. Some guests look for comfort and familiarity, while others enjoy discovering something new. My challenge is finding the right balance between the two. From there, I experiment in the kitchen, tasting and refining each dish until it feels right in terms of flavour, presentation and consistency. Sourcing ingredients in Bahrain’s climate can be challenging, but I see it as an opportunity to be thoughtful and creative. I work closely with trusted local and regional suppliers, focussing on freshness, reliability and sustainability, wherever possible. When I can use locally grown or regionally sourced produce, I do – it not only supports the local food ecosystem but also brings a stronger sense of place to the menu.

What is your signature dish and is it on the menu at Hilton Garden Inn or will you be introducing it?

I don’t really have just one signature dish, because for me, great food is always about the team and the collaboration behind it. That said, I’m especially drawn to dishes that are simple at their core but come alive through technique, quality ingredients and bold, layered flavours. One dish I’m particularly proud of is our Sous Vide Chicken with Couscous Timbale & Glazed Carrots. Slow-cooked to perfection and infused with regional spices, it is finished with a modern, thoughtful presentation. It’s a dish that feels both comforting and familiar, yet refined enough to pleasantly surprise the palate. ✤

FOOD WITH A VIEW

Liz O’Reilly discovered an extensive menu, a passionate chef and convivial surroundings on a visit to Flames & Flavours at The Art Hotel & Resort, Amwaj Islands.

It had been a while since my last visit to The Art but the landmark canopy and spacious lobby were as welcoming as ever, with friendly staff happy to direct me to the restaurant for today’s feast.

Primarily known as a steak house, Flames & Flavours has an extensive menu, from premium cuts to chef’s specials, all served up in a sophisticated ambience with low lighting and a moody colour scheme giving a contemporary feel. The star of the show though, is the view; a stroll onto the expansive terrace and the eye is immediately drawn to the yachts bobbing on the waves at Amwaj Marina – a luxe vista for a lunchtime visit. Without further ado, our food started to arrive with the signature Flames Battered Shrimp being first to the table. Now, this is a common dish but also a good gauge of a kitchen and, at Flames, it told us all we needed to know. The crunchy coating quickly yielded to sweet shrimp, a perfect combination elevated by the tangy, garlicky heat of sriracha tempered by sour cream mayo. We were certainly off to a good start with a satisfying mouthful. Maryland Crab Cakes brought a delicate flavour with chunks of tender meat complemented by a light dusting of herbs, all brought together by a smoky chipotle sauce and fresh greens. Delicious. Chef Theo told us he wouldn’t normally serve the next dish, but he had sourced some seriously good buffalo mozzarella. The contrast of the creamy cheese and plump, juicy olives, cut through by the sweet tartness of Heirloom tomatoes, wrapped in high-quality olive oil, was a definite taste of the Med, especially with that gorgeous view.

Our final appetiser was a sure favourite and beautifully presented.

Chunks of firm, flavourful avocado mixed with diced prawns: creamy, slightly gooey and oh, so tasty, topped with plump, juicy whole prawns. This was the one we kept going back to –the classic, light heat of the Louie sauce forming an excellent background to the milder main flavours.

To give our tums a break, we were served a selection of mocktails – I particularly loved the Strawberry Punch, sweet but with a lingering tartness cutting through – alongside a bright, light salad of rocket, radish, quinoa and tomatoes, with edible flowers adding the pretty and jewel like pomegranate arils to bring a little sweetness.

Then it was time for the main event and our mouths watered gently as Black Angus tenderloin was served. Succulent and tender, the light char gave the flesh a smoky contrast, with the centre deeply pink and oozing juices. Every mouthful was a triumph and both myself and my dining companion were rendered momentarily silent – something that doesn’t happen often!

Chilean Seabass followed for a lighter but no less satisfying bite. Chunky, buttery flesh, cooked so it just melted on the tongue, came encased in a crispy, salty skin for a perfect mix of textures and flavours. I’d ordered a side of fresh asparagus, which arrived bright and crunchy, sautéed in olive oil with a light dusting of salt. The earthy, nutty flavour was distinctly moreish and presented the perfect complement to the delicateness of the fish.

Braised lamb shank brought the comfort element to the table, the lightly gamey meat literally falling apart at the touch of a fork and nestled in a gorgeously rich jus reduction formed from the exceptionally slow cooking of the joint. Accompanied by classic creamy mashed potatoes and root vegetables, this was one

of my favourite dishes of the day, simple but at the same time spectacular, not trying too hard but achieving everything a good main should, seemingly effortlessly.

Chef Theodor insisted we also try The Ultimate Beef Burger, 200 grams of Black Angus, which, I have to confess, I was not looking forward to. I’m not a huge burger fan, but this was surprisingly good and tasty. Topped with stringy, melty Monterey Jack, it was honestly a complete unit! Caramelised onion added sweetness and it felt clean, not, like some, swimming in sauce, with the flavour of the meat able to take centre stage.

By this stage, we were more than replete but dessert called and we answered – in the interests of research, of course.

The Burned Basque cheesecake was rich and velvety, the slightly bitter char of the crust saving the rich, creamy middle from over sweetness, with a topping of red fruits cutting through to keep everything fresh.

Tarte tatin, the traditional caramelised apple tart, looked almost too pretty to eat, with a side of decadence in the shape of gold leaf-topped red and blue berries. Deliciously lush with a dollop of cream, the texture clung gently to our tongues, lingering sweetly for the perfect end to our experience.

From the helpful servers to Chef Theo’s personal menu pointers and the high quality of everything we sampled, our visit to Flames & Flavours was a triumph and I’ll definitely be going back for more. ✤

GOOD FOOD, GREAT VIBES

For a mix of hearty bites and fun with friends,

Bushra Hakim visited CLAW BBQ at Hilton Bahrain in Juffair.

CLAW BBQ has been winning fans in the UAE and Qatar for quite some time and has finally landed in Bahrain. It’s exactly the kind of place you want for a night out with friends, where food, drinks, games and a bit of chaos are all rolled into one. Whether you’re here for a catch-up, a casual night out or football live streaming, it’s easy to settle in and lose track of time.

Located on the 44th floor of Hilton Bahrain in Juffair, we arrived just in time to watch the sun set over the skyline. On the inside, neon lights, bold colours and an open-plan layout make it clear that this is not a quiet, sit-and-whisper spot. Seating ranges from high tables by the bar to more secluded corners with immaculate views. Games are scattered across the floor – air hockey, Jenga, pinball, darts, mini basketball and a boxing machine that rates your punch. The air hockey turned aggressive fast, the boxing machine humbled a few people and by the time our food arrived, we were already in a great mood.

The Chips & Guacamole were first and, honestly, they deserved their own moment. Made fresh right in front of us in a traditional molcajete (Mexican mortar and pestle), this wasn’t just guac, it was a performance. Avocados mashed with tomatoes, onion, jalapeños and cilantro, brought together with a hint of lime –creamy, fresh and ridiculously good. The lightly spiced, crisp chips were sturdy enough to hold the generous scoops and sharing them was almost impossible.

For drinks, margaritas were the obvious choice here and judging by the number of them around the room, I couldn’t resist. I went for the virgin Strawberry Margarita: sweet, cold and dangerously easy to finish, with the salted rim that kept pulling me back. It paired perfectly with the Tex-Mex food options that followed.

Next up were the Fried Pickles, which sounded odd until we tasted them. Golden, crunchy on the outside, warm and tangy on the inside, paired with a blue cheese dip that added just the right amount of creaminess. The contrast worked far better than expected, and they disappeared just as quickly as the guac.

The Boneless Chicken Strips were exactly what you want them to be: crispy and juicy, paired perfectly with a house-made buffalo sauce that gave a proper kick without drowning out the flavour.

The Buffalo Shrimp followed, and they were easily one of my favourite bites of the night. Giant shrimps, perfectly cooked so they stayed juicy, tossed in a tangy buffalo sauce that clung to every bite – messy, bold and totally worth it.

Amid the starters, the challenges dotted around the restaurant became impossible to ignore. One dares diners to eat 12 inferno wings in 20 minutes, promising sweat, tears, free hops after the seventh wing and ice cream and milk to ease the aftermath. Another involves finishing a seven-pound burger, surrounded by a pile of chilli cheese fries, in under 45 minutes for a spot on the wall of fame. Watching others attempt either added an extra layer of entertainment to the room.

Mains arrived while the games continued. The CLAW burger was messy, indulgent and highly recommended. A soft house patty smothered in fried cheese, topped with spicy slaw, pickles and jalapeños, it was rich, satisfying and served with spiced fries that

disappeared as quickly as the burger itself.

The BBQ Beef Short Ribs were fall-apart tender and full of smoky flavour. Paired with garlic mashed potatoes sprinkled with chives and a side of grilled green beans, the puréed spuds were the best I’ve had in a while. The Plank Roasted Salmon offered a lighter option. Roasted over cedar wood with mustard, the fillet was flaky and subtly sweet, served with smashed roasted potatoes, grilled corn on the cob and a fresh green salad. Both mains felt complete and balanced, catering to the different appetites around the table. Dessert is non-negotiable. The Peach Cobbler arrived warm and sticky, full of caramelised peaches, with ice cream melting straight into it, giving that perfect hot-and-cold combination. The Old Fashioned Apple Pie followed, with a crunchy, buttery crust, tangy apples and a gentle cinnamon warmth that felt familiar and comforting.

By the end of the night, the table had moved from one game to the next, orders had been shared and demolished, and drinks had flowed freely. CLAW BBQ encourages movement, laughter and its playful energy makes it the kind of place you come back to without thinking twice. I’ll certainly be returning when it reopens on the first day of Eid, especially for Taco Tuesdays where unlimited margaritas alone are reason enough! ✤

WHERE SANDWICHES (WITH A DIFFERENCE) REIGN SUPREME

Liz O’Reilly headed to Salumeria Papà for a midweek lunch that was all about a very special kind of bread.

Inever thought I’d get so excited about the launch of a new deli/sandwich bar but, when said eatery comes from the guys who brought us Osteria Papà, you can bet it’s going to be something special. Spoiler alert… it truly is.

Described as the ‘small but mighty sister’ of the muchloved Italian eatery, Salumeria Papà occupies a prime spot in Juffair Square. Salumeria in Italian translates as a shop specialising in cooked and cured meat, cheeses and other prepared foods. But, where chefs and co-founders Steeven Gilles and Paul Gardin have added a touch of genius, is by constructing a menu that, aside from some seriously good salads and the expected excellent antipasti, is built around a pizzwich concept using breads made from their renowned pizza dough. Fermented for 72 hours, it’s crispy, light, flaky and oh so moreish. It’s also the perfect accompaniment to the imaginative range of fillings they’ve dreamt up.

The place itself doesn’t try too hard. There’s a certain rustic charm with a beamed ceiling and thick wooden shelves bearing olive oils and vinegars, but it’s not overdone and manages to feel welcoming without being twee. The menu’s split into two parts –breakfast and all-day dining, though breakfast is actually served all day (these guys actually listen when their guests speak).

We started with the Middle Eastern Breakfast – classic hummus, labneh and falafel – familiar flavours but somehow elevated. The labneh so creamy you could eat it alone, if it weren’t for that amazing pizza bread, the hummus earthy and rich, the falafel deeply crunchy, giving way to a light, fluffy centre.

Next up, also from the breakfast menu, came Croque Madame but, of course, with a Salumeria twist. The ‘Queen of sandwiches’ is

already indulgent with its layers of Gruyère cheese and veal ham topped by a fried egg, but when Chef Steeven approached with a cream dispenser (used for piping creamy sauces to resemble whipped ice cream), we knew we were in for a treat. The ‘Queen’ was crowned with a liberal stream of special sauce that’s literally Parmesan and cream, whipped together to form a luxuriant, silken dream of a sauce – rich and deeply satisfying, it unified all the flavours for an extravagant mouthful that we kept going back to. For a break before we tucked into the speciality Pizzwiches from the all-day menu, we sampled a goat cheese salad – bright and refreshing, mixed leaves and roasted vegetables forming a perfect counterpoint to the salty crumbled cheese and tangy, sweet balsamic dressing – and a beautifully presented antipasti platter. Rich, deep red Bresaola sat alongside nutty Grana Padano cheese, salami mingled with grilled artichoke and olives, all rounded out with a deeply flavourful tomato jam and, again, that amazing bread. Flavours and textures met in harmony, perfectly complementing each other and I honestly could have eaten just this and gone home happy but… Then came the dish I’d secretly been eyeing since our arrival. The menu has a section called Papà’s Sicilian Pizza and, if you eat only one thing at Salumeria, this has to be it! These are rounds of dough, the toppings sealed inside and baked until the outside’s crispy. They’re almost like a toasted sandwich that spent its summer holidays in Palermo and came back with a whole new attitude. We had the Crispy Beef Salami Picante with Gruyère, mustard, cream, honey and fresh thyme. And, my gosh, it was a hit. Crunchy and meaty with the sharp tang of the mustard and

cheese cutting through the rich gooeyness of the cream and honey, it would have been unseemly to fight over the last piece, but we honestly came close.

We tried two options from the Papà’s Pizzwich section, each making it abundantly clear why this invention has become an instant bestseller.

The Vitello Al Pistacchio was stuffed with veal ham, stracciatella and a flavourful basil pesto alongside rocca leaves and toasted pistachios. The fluffy, creamy cheese mix and earthy pesto oozed from the bread inviting us to bite in for a messy, deeply satisfying marriage of texture and taste, the crunchy nuts bringing an interesting extra depth.

And last but definitely not least for the savouries, the Club Pizzwich combined a whole range of flavours in one space – chicken doner, fried egg, crispy bacon topped with melted Parmesan, lettuce, tomato and Caesar dressing. It took some serious coordination to get everything in one bite but, when we did, it was a different kind of ‘wow’ – crunchy lettuce offering the perfect counterpoint to the cheesy bacon, juices from the chicken bursting forth, bringing an explosion of well-marinated, savoury deliciousness.

Either of the Pizzwiches could’ve been a meal in itself and, by the time we’d tried them both, I honestly didn’t think there was space for anything more… until the Dolci platter arrived bearing exquisitely constructed mini desserts alongside a couple of glossy, flaky pastries. Raspberry, chocolate, toffee, mango and tiramisu – there was a beautiful little cake to suit every taste, all of them almost too pretty to eat. But, of course, eat them we did with many oohs and ahs of delight as fruity and chocolatey flavours combined with gooey creamy textures. We also sampled some layered desserts, presented in Salumeria jars with a tab opening (perfect for taking home). I particularly loved the raspberry version, creamy, fruity and with a nutty topping, the perfect end to a delicious feast.

Small but mighty indeed, Salumeria Papà has filled a gap in the market we didn’t even know was there: comfy and social, it offers great service and high quality ingredients in bites with a difference that can turn a quick snack into an occasion. I’ll definitely be going back. ✤

BUDAPEST’S BELLE ÉPOQUE GEM

fact journeyed to Budapest to experience how a historic landmark on Erzsébet Boulevard pairs old-world splendour with Anantara’s contemporary finesse.

Budapest opened our visit with a sense of motion everywhere — trams gliding past, cafés spilling onto pavements, the whole city seemingly mid-scene. Pest’s sunlit boulevards and ornate façades created a first impression that felt both cinematic and unfiltered. We arrived ready for discovery, and it became clear that this city, layered with history and bursting with character, had every intention of leaving a lasting impression.

At the centre of this lively backdrop stood the Anantara New York Palace Budapest Hotel, a property whose Belle Époque majesty rises above the city’s movement with authority. Originally crafted in 1894 as the European headquarters of the New York Life Insurance Company, the palace brings together Italian Renaissance curves, Baroque drama, Gothic flourishes and Art Nouveau imagination in a single silhouette. Its meticulous restoration has allowed these details not only to endure, but to shine — a reminder that some buildings don’t merely survive history; they keep its stories alive.

When History Becomes a Host

Stepping into the hotel felt like entering a quieter world resting just beyond the city’s cheerful bustle. The Poet Bar set the mood immediately — its soft lighting, oak accents and nostalgic atmosphere offering a gentle contrast to the lively streets outside. With a

welcome drink in hand and the faint echo of old literary conversations in the air, we felt an immediate shift: Budapest’s energy remained at the door, but here, it softened into something more intimate.

Check-in unfolded with the kind of ease that reminds you luxury is as much about people as marble floors and chandeliers. The team struck that balance between warmth and refinement, turning formalities into a pleasant pause before the experience began.

Lunch in The Atrium continued the introduction beautifully. Beneath soaring columns and a canopy of light, Hungarian flavours appeared with elegant confidence that reflected the warmth and intention behind our invitation. Our rooms continued this blend of heritage and comfort. Chocolate-toned textiles and soft-edged furnishings created an inviting calm, while Italian design touches and marble bathrooms added a modern note of indulgence. It was a space made for relaxing into the rhythm of the city — even if that rhythm encouraged a spontaneous nap. The afternoon brought a shift from exploration to rejuvenation. Anantara’s Signature Massage, shaped by warm oils and flowing technique, offered an experience that balanced relaxation with renewal. Any remaining travel tension melted away with precision.

As evening approached, the White Salon awaited — a dining venue that bridges Budapest’s culinary traditions with refined modern interpretation. Inspired by classic European brasseries, the menu highlighted Hungarian ingredients through thoughtful techniques and contemporary presentation. Every course felt like a conversation with the city itself, shared one flavour at a time.

“Stepping into the hotel felt like entering a quieter world resting just beyond the city’s cheerful bustle.”

Amongst the Echoes and Elegance of Budapest

Though the hotel was the focal point of our stay, Budapest was determined to play its part — and it did so with the enthusiasm of a city that knows it has plenty to show off. Our guided tour revealed a landscape rich with contrasts: grand architecture standing shoulder to shoulder with corner cafés and bustling markets that made our attempts at 'just browsing' rather optimistic. With experts who knew the city with both affection and authority, we explored Budapest not as spectators, but as willing participants flowing with the city’s vibrant pulse.

Breakfast the next morning at the Deepwater Room added a layer to the city’s famed coffeehouse tradition. Beneath gilded stucco and terrazzo columns, pastries arrived still warm, eggs were cooked with precision and the French toast had a knack for making even the most disciplined among us reconsider portion control. It was easy to understand why generations before us treated such cafés as their unofficial offices — inspiration comes easily when the surroundings look this good.

The mixology experience later that day brought a playful change of pace. Under expert guidance, we delved into the origins of classic mixed drinks before attempting to shake, stir and garnish our own. Let’s just say some of our creations were more confident in appearance than in flavour, but the live gypsy music drifting through the lobby ensured that even our most experimental blends were met with generous enthusiasm.

A Sanctuary Carved from Heritage and Hospitality

What stayed with us throughout the trip was the palace’s ability to offer something new each time we returned. Whether it was the sophistication of the wellness area, the glimmer of Murano chandeliers or the serenity of the relaxation pool, every corner revealed a thoughtful detail. Spice Spoons, the hotel’s culinary immersion, offered another highlight. With a glass of sparkling in hand, we learnt to prepare traditional Lángos and sample local dips under the guidance of chefs. It was warm, genuine and flavourful — a reminder that some of the best cultural exchanges happen over shared food.

Our final morning brought a Signature Sunrise Breakfast on the White Salon balcony. Bathed in soft light, accompanied by fresh pastries and exquisite service, it felt like a curtain call on a visit we wished could last a little longer.

As we prepared to leave Budapest, we realised the city had woven itself into our memories with a blend of cultural richness and charm. The Anantara New York Palace Budapest Hotel didn’t just enhance that experience — it anchored it. With its heritage, hospitality and heart, it reminded us that some stays do more than impress, they become a part of who you are.

With Gratitude to Those Who Welcomed Us

Our heartfelt thanks to the entire Anantara New York Palace Budapest team, whose expertise, professionalism and kindness shaped every moment of our unforgettable stay. ✤

SHOOTING FOR THE STARS

The up-and-coming Bahraini indie band Mission to the Moon (MTTM) has been making waves in the regional music scene over the past few years. The dynamic 22-year-old trio – lead vocalist Nour Boujacli, bassist Ayesha Tyabji and guitarist Mohamed Abdulla (Mojay) – are definitely ones to watch! Apple Sharma caught up with the young musicians to get the backstory on their rapid rise, their breakout hit single and their upcoming gig.

fact: What’s the story behind your band's name and how did MTTM come together?

MTTM: In January 2021, during the height of COVID-19, I [Nour] got a DM on TikTok from a then stranger – Ayesha, who complimented me on my covers and asked to jam together. Starved from social interaction at the time, we immediately met and hit it off. COVID did this strange thing to people, where if anything was actually happening, you ironically needed to share the dopamine hit and bring people into the fold. As it so happened, Ayesha and Mojay were already mutually acquainted, so they scheduled their next meetup together in Distorted Studios Riffa. Now armed with all the equipment needed to make music, we got to it. The name was an afterthought – something we needed to title a WhatsApp group chat, but it also needed to sound good. We basically iterated through a random name generator over a hundred times until we found something that was pleasing to our ears.

fact: For someone hearing you for the first time, how would you describe your sound and music genre, and which artists have influenced you most?

MTTM: The simplest category to put us in is indie pop, but our DNA is closer to bedroom pop with dream pop and shoegaze elements sprinkled in. Our sound has changed over the years and will most likely continue to do so; our first single, Loop, is a classic, clean-cut indie song, while our latest released EP, Into Blue, is an ode to our shared love for pop, folk and ‘alt’ music. We each have our own distinct influences, and we feel like those come through on our records. While the list is non-exhaustive, I [Nour] am big on Clairo, Alvvays and Faye Webster; Ayesha on The Cure, The Beatles and Wolf Alice; and Mojay on Prince, D’Angelo and Yellow Magic Orchestra.

fact: Pears was a breakout hit and landed you on Spotify Arabia’s Fresh Finds playlist. How did that feel, and why do you think it connects with listeners?

MTTM: During the recording process of Pears, we all realised that the song was shaping to be something bigger than whatever came before. There was so much intention with the structure, harmonies and lyrical material – more so than with Loop or Purple Lemonade – that it felt as complete of a song as we could’ve written at the time. Reception on release was greater than we could’ve ever expected, and the Spotify Fresh Finds inclusion made us feel like we were onto something big. Fresh Finds gave us a taste of big milestones and we’re super eager to push for more. A large reason as to why we think the song resonated with so many people, aside from the sonic aspects, is that the lyrical content reflected a time in life everyone has lived at least once before. The song must’ve served as some sort of portal to a parallel dimension in which those days are cast in a novel and fun light.

fact: What does your creative process look like when you’re writing music? What’s one thing each of you brings to the process?

MTTM: Writing has never been formulaic for us, but just like any song, they don’t get made in a vacuum. It always starts with a seed

of some sorts, whether that be a vocal melody, a lyric, a chord progression or even listening to a song and saying, “We want THAT.” One thing we’ve figured out for certain is that we have to be in the same room as each other when we write, or else the result is detached from any shared experience and never progresses. Ayesha and I [Nour] have an uncanny ability to bounce words off of each other to form great sounding verses and hooks, and Mojay adds his own distinct flavour to the instrumentation. We all share responsibility for song structure and any ear candy or elements that fill the empty gaps, whether it’s adding an organ to On the Edge or dissecting the ending harmonies in See You in Court, trying to make it seem like the world is dissolving in real-time.

fact: You’ve played packed shows in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. What does it mean to represent Bahrain on regional stages, especially as a young band?

MTTM: Playing packed shows in Bahrain and Saudi is the best feeling as a local band. Growing up here in Bahrain, you’re always told that “There’s no music scene here” or “People won’t care enough about local acts” or that you “Have to leave the country to pursue your passion”, and that brand of pessimism has never sat right with us. We intuitively knew that those words were projections of doom and gloom internal realities that don’t exist in the real, human world of music. People yearn for experiences that aren’t viewed through a six-inch vertical screen, experiences that they can connect with as people. Whenever we get on stage, we feel immense pride that we can represent and satisfy that

yearning from, to and through our people of Bahrain. We keep at it because people, including us, love music and deserve to be surrounded by it if they so choose to, and we hope to inspire more young and upcoming artists like us to follow suit and shoot their own shots at expressing themselves.

fact: If you could collaborate with any regional or international artist, who would be at the top of your wish list?

MTTM: The top spot on that list is different for each of us. For me [Nour], it would be Clairo – ever since I discovered her song Sis and her cover of Duet by Frankie Cosmos and seeing pieces of myself in Clairo’s music. Ayesha’s pick is Alice Phoebe Lou. While Alice is a big inspiration to Ayesha as a songwriter, she’d like to talk to Alice in the context of musical conversation, jam sessions and artistic growth. Mojay would choose Mk.gee and, much like Ayesha, pick his brain about technical elements of songwriting and production, in the hope of having Mk.gee’s immense and otherworldly songwriting energy rub off on him.

fact: What advice would you give to a Bahraini teenager writing songs in their bedroom right now?

MTTM: Don’t hold yourself back with negativity – your haters will do that for you. No matter what you put out, there will be a vocal

subgroup of people who disagree with you and judge you, so don’t sacrifice any artistic integrity trying to satisfy anyone but yourselves; be yourself and have fun. Music is a beautiful thing, so always be grateful that you surround yourself with it. If you’re ever stuck and in need of more advice, reach out to us. We love all our peers and would love to give serious advice to people with genuine concerns about their future in music.

fact: What’s next on your calendar? Can you share any details about upcoming gigs or releases fans can look forward to?

MTTM: We’re really excited about what’s coming up. On April 3, we’re playing at Under the Palms Indie Festival – A Good Neighbour x Artology event bringing together a lineup of indie acts from across Bahrain and Saudi. It’s happening at Artology [in Saar], and it feels special to be part of a space that genuinely supports local artists and alternative music. We’re also working on some new material in parallel. So, if you’re there, you might hear something before the rest of the world does *wink wink*. ✤

FULLY BOOKED

CONTEMPORARY FICTION

That’s What Friends Are For

That’s What Friends Are For channels the warmth and wit of The Golden Girls into a contemporary story about friendship, reinvention and the unexpected turns life can take later on. The novel follows a group of women who, brought together by circumstance, form a bond that helps them confront personal setbacks, embrace new beginnings and redefine who they are beyond the roles they once occupied.

FANTASY

This

Kingdom Will Not Kill Me

This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me delivers the kind of high-stakes fantasy the author is known for: a politically volatile realm, razor-sharp power plays and a heroine who refuses to be outmanoeuvred. Set within a kingdom where loyalty shifts as quickly as influence, the novel follows a woman forced to navigate court intrigue, rival factions and mounting threats that could reshape the balance of power.

ONE BRAND, TWO DROPS

Swedish fashion retailer H&M has released up-to-the-minute collections for both men and women, featuring stylish basics, classic cuts and coastal influences for a distinctly spring vibe.

The women’s line from H&M Studio Essentials reimagines wardrobe staples through an unconventional lens: architectural tailoring, statement leather jackets, knitwear with offbeat twists, cropped boxy shirts and refined iterations of the ‘perfect tee’ form the backbone of the range.

Created by the same in-house design team behind H&M Studio, this season’s Essentials draws on 1990s' minimalism and blends it with subtle athletic references. Highlights include a doublebreasted wool blazer with stitched creases on wide sleeves and raw-edged seams, and a shrunken cashmere cardigan featuring a double placket and an additional shoulder layer.

A piqué-inspired top appears in a sheer silk blend with a long row of mother-of-pearl buttons, while a transparent knitted pointelle top and skirt set plays with fluted hems and rolled edges. Spring’s freshness comes through in crisp cotton, washed canvas and silk jerseys, expressed in tonal whites with soft pops of faded yellow and powder pink that blend seamlessly into a refined greige palette.

For men, H&M Atelier SS26 Collection is shaped by coastal lifestyles embracing the rhythm of longer days, where simple, essential shapes meet fluid construction and a palette softened by summer light.

The collection reads like a well-curated travel edit: pocketfront shirts, Henley tees and sleeveless knits act as foundations, layered beneath relaxed blazers and airy windbreakers. Cargo trousers, Bermuda shorts cut below the knee and pleated pants that pool at the ankle define the season's elongated, laid-back silhouette. Fits are generously proportioned, with untucked shirttails emerging from beneath technical outerwear and knitwear achieving an artful ease through relaxed proportions and considered layering.

Softness is found in rustic and tactile yarns, cottons and suede, alongside the pragmatism of technical fabrics. Each piece carries a lived-in character, enhanced by a sun-bleached colour palette drawn from Provence – dusty earth tones, faded mint and washed denim that looks cool and comfortable. ✤

What We’re (Still) Talking About?

He’s A Winner

There was some stiff competition at the recent Winter Olympics in Italy, none more so than among the women’s crosscountry skiers, who found themselves up against a ‘rival’ with a distinct advantage.

Team Australia and Team Croatia were joined in the closing stages of their heat by an escaped dog, who not only kept up with the skiers but actually managed to trigger the finish-line camera.

The intruder gave a quick nod to the cameras before joining his fellow ‘athletes’ at the post-finish area where

he was swiftly identified as escaped pet, Nazgul, a Czechoslovakian wolfdog who, apparently, wasn’t happy at being left home alone and decided to find himself some human companions.

One of the skiers was quoted saying: "It's not that big a deal, because I'm not fighting for medals or anything big. But if that happened in the finals, it could really cost someone the medals or a really good result."

We beg to differ. What could be better than being chased by a full-grown wolfalike to improve your timings?

Talking Turkey

We’ve heard that in the frozen north, people leave their car doors unlocked in case passersby encounter polar bears and need to escape – seems reasonable to us, though we do wonder if it’s not just an invitation for opportunist thievery.

But it seems the ace predators are not all you have to watch out for in Canada. News site upi.com reports that an Ontario man was forced to jump into a stranger’s car, while she was in it, to get away from a pair of marauding turkeys!

Michael Bourgon told reporters he was simply walking along, minding his own

business, when the birds started following and then getting aggressive towards him. He tried to flee and kicked snow at the turkeys, to no avail, before jumping into a stranger’s car until the irate birds backed off. In true modern-day fashion, the incident was, of course, caught on video by a passerby and has since gone viral. We have to sympathise with Michael who said of his rescuer: "She's some random lady in the car. I look like the Unabomber… honestly, I just want to get away from these turkeys.... I was not in the mood for turkey business!" Quite.

The Pikachu Illustrator card was one of only 39 produced as prizes for a 1998 contest and is the only one to be graded a 10 by Professional Sports Authenticator.

The influencer turned WWE wrestler made history when he bought the card for USD5,275,000 in 2021 – making it the

then most expensive card ever – now just five short years later, he’s laughing all the way to the bank with a USD10 million profit.

The card was reportedly bought by AJ Scaramucci, of Solari Capital, who views it as an investment in light of a surge in the trading card market in recent years.

Does that mean it could be worth even more in another few years? Ever get the feeling some people live in a parallel universe?
