NEW STEAKHOUSE DEBUTS IN ADLIYA

Bahrain’s restaurant scene is heating up as Saltfire has opened its doors in Adliya, bringing flame-fired gastronomy and refined menus.

Saltfire – Steakhouse & Fire Kitchen has joined Adliya’s eclectic dining space with a bold, new concept. Created by FoodFund International, the Dubai-based hospitality group behind The Meat Co., Clay and SAN Beach, Saltfire is more than just a steakhouse. Its menu and style are rooted in open-flame cooking, with a venue offering intimacy and energy, designed for both leisurely lunches and late-night indulgence.

Reimagining the timeless ritual of gathering around fire and food, the restaurant features an interior that blends industrial edge and warm textures, offering five unique menus that highlight the brand’s fire-led theme. For breakfast, the refined lineup includes dishes such as Salmon & Avocado Toast, Royal Feast with beef fillet and sourdough, Shakshuka variations and the signature Milk Cake with Pistachio. The à la carte section leans into signature wood-fired starters, mains and artisanal sides, including Short Rib Shumai, Wood-Fired Broccoli Steak, Tiger Prawns with Arborio Rice and decadent burgers, such as Wagyu Smash.

Meat lovers will likely head straight to the Grill Cuts menu – the crown of Saltfire’s fire kitchen – showcasing dishes including

Stone Axe Full-Blood Wagyu MS9+, Tomahawk 1200g and Margaret River Wagyu Striploin – all wood-fired to perfection, pairing refined ageing with primal flame techniques.

Fire meets indulgence in the dessert section, with an elegant Fire Brûlée, Wood-Fired Pistachio Cookies and the dramatic Triple Ice Cream Meringue Delight, among others.

A licensed venue, Saltfire’s drinks and beverages are carefully considered, with signature artisan sips (Coco Bello, Kiwi Wikie and Passion Fizz), Avantcha Teas, Raspberry Matcha Lattes and Valrhona Hot Chocolate, as well as mocktails, smoothies and cold-pressed juices. Eira Norwegian Water completes the selection.

Located on the ground floor of The Terminal in Adliya, the restaurant is open from 8am to 1am, Sunday to Wednesday, and from 8am to 2am, Thursday to Saturday. ✤

BAHRAIN TO HOST F1 PRE-SEASON 2026

Formula 1 pre-season testing will be held again in Bahrain in 2026 – for the sixth year in a row – at Bahrain International Circuit (BIC), with big changes on the grid.

BIC will host an historic Formula 1 pre-season testing in 2026 across two exciting three-day sessions. Scheduled to take place from February 11 to 13 and February 18 to 20 at Sakhir, the tests will offer fans a front-row seat to major changes in the sport.

The sessions mark the beginning of a new era for F1, with transformative new regulations and the long-awaited debut of the Cadillac F1 Team, the 11th addition to join the grid. Fans in Bahrain and worldwide will get their first glimpse of the all-new cars in action as teams prepare for the season ahead.

This will be the sixth consecutive year that pre-season testing is held at BIC. The circuit first hosted tests in 2009 and again in 2014, before becoming a regular fixture from 2021 onwards. The 2026 test sessions offer fans the rare opportunity to see all 11 teams in action as they prepare for a busy season that will kick-off with the Australian Grand Prix weekend from March 6 to 8. The championship will continue with races in China and Japan, before heading back to the Kingdom for the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix, from April 10 to

12 – the fourth round in a packed 24-race calendar.

“It is once again a tremendous honour to be selected as the host venue for F1 Pre-season Testing in 2026,” said BIC Chief Executive Shaikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa. “With so much to look forward to next year with the introduction of the new regulations and Cadillac F1 Team joining the grid, the tests will be an historic and hugely important occasion for the sport.”

Fans can take advantage of the Early Bird promotion for the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix 2026, which runs until August 3. It offers 15% discount on tickets for the Main Grandstand and Turn 1 Grandstands, with 10% off for the Beyon Grandstand, University Grandstand and Victory Grandstand. All those who purchase tickets during this Early Bird promotion will enjoy free entry to the second three-day session of the F1 pre-season testing 2026. ✤

OPEN CALL FOR MUSIC ARTISTS

In a bold move blending fashion and music, fashion powerhouse Rabanne is partnering with Miraval Studios to reimagine a classic and spotlight the next wave of artists.

Music professionals have an exciting new opportunity to look forward to, as Rabanne launches a bold cultural initiative. At the heart of this project is a fully remastered re-release of Judy Carter’s cult 1983 single, Listen To The Music – revived and reimagined under the direction of Grammy award-winning French producer Damien Quintard, who co-founded the rebirth of Miraval Studios, along with Oscar-winning actor Brad Pitt.

Listen To The Music was a disco-boogie gem, designed to get the dance floor buzzing with Judy’s warm, magnetic voice syncing beautifully with vibrant guitars and airy synths. A veritable disco anthem, this cult track – Rabanne’s very first musical reinterpretation – is now the starting point for a dialogue between past and present, supported by the fashion brand’s singular vision and Miraval’s acoustic signature.

This release isn’t just a nod to the past; it’s a resounding invitation to creators around the world to shape the sound of the future. To mark this moment, Rabanne is launching the #RabanneRemix challenge on TikTok – an open call to musicians, beatmakers and producers worldwide to remix

Judy’s timeless track and bring their own vision to life.

Participants will have the chance to win a residency at Miraval Studios in October this year, where they’ll collaborate with Damien and top-tier sound engineers to co-produce a new track.

“This is more than a music drop – it’s a tribute to Paco Rabanne’s enduring fusion of fashion, sound and avantgarde culture,” said a Rabanne spokesperson.

“It’s about celebrating our heritage while championing fresh talent with bold, boundary-pushing ideas.”

Open to all, the #RabanneRemix challenge invites you to rework Judy Carter’s 1983 track Listen To The Music

Download the vocal and instrumental stems from the official Rabanne website, remix it your way and post your version on TikTok by August 29. Don’t forget to tag @rabanne and mention #RabanneRemix, when posting. Good luck, all! ✤ GO: VISIT WWW.RABANNE.COM OR WWW.MIRAVAL-STUDIOS.COM FOR MORE INFORMATION.

CALLING ALL CREATIVES

The Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA) has issued an open call for the design of four kiosks that will be placed along the Pearling Path, the Kingdom’s historic UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Pearling Path traces the social, economic and urban legacy of Bahrain’s historic pearling economy. The 3.5km path connects natural, architectural and urban elements, including historic houses, public spaces and cultural buildings, that narrate the story of the people, places and practices that shaped the pearling era. A unique opportunity has arisen with an open call to architects and designers (GCC nationals or residents) to design four kiosks. One will be located at the Bu Mahir Seashore, serving as a ticket booth for water sports and food and beverages (F&B), and the other three will be dedicated to F&B, located adjacent to three public squares along the Pearling Path (Al Dana, Al Jiwan and Al Qmash).

Located at the southern tip of the Pearling Path, Bu Mahir Seashore holds particular cultural and historical importance. It was the final stretch of land that pearl divers stood on before setting out to sea and the first they touched upon their return months later. The site features several key elements: Qal’at Bu Mahir Tower, archaeological remains of other defensive structures and the Bu Mahir Visitor Centre, designed by PAD Architects. In addition to its historical significance, Bu Mahir Seashore

offers leisure activities, such as kayaking and boat rides. From here, visitors can cross the pedestrian bridge and continue along the Pearling Path, where 17 public spaces, all designed by Bureau Bas Smets and OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen, offer shaded areas, benches and drinking fountains, creating moments for rest, reflection and social interaction.

Submissions must present contemporary designs that offer innovative and creative solutions, while respecting the site’s historical importance and adhering to UNESCO World Heritage Site guidelines. Designers are also encouraged to respond thoughtfully to the unique climate of Muharraq in their proposals.

The application form, along with submission requirements, are available on the official Pearling Path website. The deadline for entries is August 31. A BACA jury will select one winning proposal and two runners-up. ✤ GO: VISIT CULTURE.GOV.BH/EN OR PEARLINGPATH.BH/EN OR EMAIL PEARLINGPATH@CULTURE.GOV.BH FOR

POWER MEETS POISE

fact anticipated great things from our MG HS 2.0T LUX test drive, and the SUV delivered with leather, horsepower and a whole lot of charisma.

There are moments in life when the stars align, like when your favourite playlist hits the exact mood you’re in or when you find an empty parking spot right in front of your destination. Driving the new MG HS 2.0T LUX felt like one of those experiences – a mid-sized SUV with everything in sync.

Styled to Steal the Spotlight

From the moment we approached the HS, it was clear MG never intended for this car to blend into the background. Up front, the ‘Hunting Eye’ LED headlights are the automotive equivalent of a smouldering glance across a crowded room – sharp, bright and impossible to ignore.

The SUV’s aerodynamic body and sleek silhouette are accentuated by 19-inch dark alloy wheels that don’t just say “I mean business”, they shout it (in a British accent, of course).

Shifting our focus to the back end, the signature LED taillights, known affectionately as ‘The Shard’, complete the tasteful exterior design with dramatic flair, ensuring this SUV looks as good when it leaves as it does when it arrives.

Plush, Polished & Purposeful

Sliding inside the cabin, we were pleasantly surprised by what MG refers to as a Sophisticated Sanctuary – a description that proved not to be mere PR poetry.

The supple and supportive seats are wrapped in deluxe leather, with the driver’s power-adjustable throne featuring memory function and lumbar support. Front passengers need not be envious, as they enjoy a four-way adjustable experience. We could fully appreciate the effortless combination of elegance, luxury and practicality, thanks to the panoramic sunroof that brought the desert sky right into our laps. This SUV is an oasis of quality materials, clever tech and intuitive design.

The boot offers 530 litres of space, expandable to a whopping 1,397 litres with the rear seats folded flat – perfect for everything from grocery runs to camping getaways. Even the smallest details, like the soft-touch dashboard, LED ambient lighting and the (much appreciated) dual-zone climate control, create a sense of care and comfort that’s rare at this price point.

Control Meets Convenience

Now let’s talk tech. MG clearly wanted to impress the digitally savvy with the HS LUX and it shows. Front and centre are a pair of 12.3-inch floating HD screens that transform the dashboard into what looks suspiciously like a command centre for something far more exciting than a morning commute.

The infotainment system proved crisp, responsive and refreshingly simple to navigate. Whether we were syncing our phones with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, navigating via GPS, taking advantage of the virtual cockpit or enjoying the view from the 360-degree HD camera, it all felt smooth and seamless.

The Bose eight-speaker premium sound system deserves a paragraph of its own. Whether we were cranking up classic drive anthems or taking calls from the office, we experienced rich, clear audio that filled the cabin.

There’s even a wireless charger and enough USB ports to keep a carload of teenagers entertained and fully charged.

Engineered For Excitement

This is where the MG HS 2.0T really earned its stripes. Under the shapely bonnet lies a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that delivers 231hp and 370Nm of torque – enough juice to make overtaking on the highway feel like sport rather than stress. We surged from zero to “wait, we’re already there?” in no time – all while enjoying the responsive delivery of a buttery smooth nine-speed automatic transmission, compliments of the gearbox maestros at ZF.

Selectable drive modes, including Eco and Sport, allowed us to choose our vibe, with paddle shifters elevating the latter experience. The acceleration was brisk, the ride refined and the suspension (MacPherson at the front, multi-link at the rear) ironed out most of the bumps, much like a luxury saloon. The HS is a frontwheel drive, so don’t expect dune-bashing prowess – but for city slicking and coastal highways, it delivers a poised performance.

Brains Behind The Brawn

When it comes to safety, MG hasn’t just thrown in a few airbags

From the moment we approached the HS, it was clear MG never intended for this car to blend into the background.”

and called it a day – they went full Level 2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems). That means Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking and more are working behind the scenes to keep you and yours safe and centred. We tested out the Blind Spot Information System in a particularly tight car park in Manama and it was like having a second pair of eyes. Six airbags, ISOFIX mounts and a reinforced safety frame round out the package, all contributing to the HS LUX’s five-star Euro NCAP rating.

Consider Us Impressed

The MG HS 2.0T LUX is one of those rare cars that manages to tick all the right boxes without feeling like it’s ticking boxes. It’s got the style to turn heads, the performance to keep you grinning and the tech to make every journey feel like a first-class experience. ✤

SUPER SPORTS CAR UNVEILED

This year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed saw Maserati reveal the MCPURA, a performance-focussed evolution of the MC20 Halo Car, available in coupé and convertible versions.

Maserati has taken the covers off its latest super sports car, the MCPURA, at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed. Available as a coupé and a convertible (known as Cielo), the model builds on the legacy of the MC20 but takes refinement, performance and styling several steps further.

Built around a carbon-fibre monocoque chassis, the MCPURA remains lightweight at under 1,500kg, giving it a weight-to-power ratio of 2.33kg/CV. It’s powered by Maserati’s 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 Nettuno engine, producing 630CV at 7500rpm and 720Nm of torque from 3000rpm. First introduced with the MC20, this engine features an innovative pre-chamber combustion system with twin spark plugs. This technology is derived from Formula 1 and is now available in an engine adapted for the road. Design updates focus on both aesthetics and function. The Butterfly doors are retained, offering easier access while exposing the carbon-fibre chassis. In the Cielo version, the car is fitted with a retractable glass roof that can switch from opaque to transparent in just one second, thanks to polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) technology.

“With MCPURA, Maserati is once again regaining its rightful place: at the top and in its stomping ground,” said Santo Ficili, Maserati COO. “Both versions – coupé and Cielo – are created at our historic Modena facility, where the heart of the Trident has been beating for almost 90 years.”

The launch car appeared in a sophisticated Ai Aqua Rainbow –a custom blue paint developed through the Maserati Fuoriserie customisation programme. Matte for the coupé and gloss for the convertible, the paint shifts subtly in sunlight, creating a rainbowlike effect. Magenta-blue mica detailing on the grille, insignia and wheels add contrast, while Alcantara Ice seats inside feature a

laser-etched Trident motif, with iridescent double-sided backing in red and blue, creating a sporty elegance.

The colour palette for MCPURA is eye-catching and evocative, consisting of more than 30 shades from the Maserati Fuoriserie programme, whether solid, metallic, three-layer, four-layer or matte. New options include Devil Orange, Verde Royale and Night Interaction, allowing for both bold and understated configurations.

MCPURA is produced entirely at Maserati’s historic Modena facility, where both the Nettuno engine and bodywork are built. This is also where Fuoriserie versions are painted and finished. The car marks another step forward for Maserati’s modern identity – one that keeps its passion for performance at its centre and encompasses everything that makes the Maserati driving experience unique. ✤

LEADING WITH EXCELLENCE

Combining more than 35 years of visionary leadership and operational expertise, Dr Essa Faqeeh, CEO of Areen Hospitality, discusses the company’s forward-thinking AI integration, future ambitions and his distinctive approach to leadership.

Areen Hospitality has always embraced innovation. How are you integrating new technologies, particularly AI, to enhance the guest experience across your properties?

Technology is a core pillar of our operational strategy and we are actively integrating AI to elevate the guest journey. One key initiative is the introduction of pre-arrival digital check-in, allowing guests to check in before reaching the property and receive a virtual room key directly on their mobile devices. This reduces wait times, enhances privacy and ensures a seamless arrival experience. Additionally, we are deploying AI-powered WhatsApp concierge services, enabling guests to communicate effortlessly with the hotel – from requesting housekeeping to booking spa appointments. This system functions as a 24/7 virtual assistant, reducing dependency on front desk staff while improving response speed and service personalisation. These innovations align with our vision to deliver intuitive, guest-centric hospitality that meets the expectations of today’s digitally savvy travellers.

Areen Hospitality has grown significantly under your leadership. What’s been the most rewarding milestone so far?

One of the most rewarding milestones has been the successful repositioning of the iconic Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain in partnership with Accor. This marked a strategic step in elevating luxury hospitality standards in Bahrain. Additionally, launching and operating flagship properties, such as Charthouse Bahrain Habour and Pearlhouse Bahrain Habour, alongside the revitalisation of The Lost Paradise of Dilmun Water Park, has reaffirmed our commitment to innovation and excellence in guest experience. Establishing Areen Hospitality as a multi-vertical operator with a strong consulting arm has also been a proud achievement.

What key principles guide your decision-making when introducing new concepts or properties?

Our decisions are driven by market intelligence, ROI analysis and brand differentiation. We evaluate demand drivers, location potential and customer behaviour before committing to any concept. Innovation, sustainability and operational efficiency are non-negotiable criteria. We also prioritise alignment with national tourism objectives and ensure our projects contribute positively to Bahrain’s hospitality landscape.

Areen Hospitality manages a diverse portfolio, from hotels to food and beverage (F&B) concepts. What’s the long-term goal and are there any plans in the pipeline for expanding the company’s footprint?

Bahrain’s Tourism Strategy 2022–2026 is built around five pillars: enhancing the tourism offering, diversifying source markets, increasing visitor numbers, developing infrastructure and encouraging investment. Bahrain’s unique appeal – rooted in its rich cultural heritage, island lifestyle and accessibility – perfectly supports this vision.

At Areen Hospitality, we actively align our projects with national objectives. Our portfolio includes diverse offerings, from luxury resorts and boutique hotels to entertainment and F&B destinations, all designed to elevate Bahrain’s visitor experience. Through assets like Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain and The Lost Paradise of Dilmun Water Park, we attract high-value leisure and family tourism. Simultaneously, we support government initiatives by investing in talent development, digital transformation and sustainable practices, ensuring Bahrain remains competitive in the regional tourism landscape.

Having worked closely with tourism authorities across the region, how would you describe Bahrain’s unique appeal as a destination?

Bahrain offers a rich blend of heritage, modernity and accessibility. It’s known for its authentic Arabian hospitality, cultural depth and strategic location in the Gulf. Unlike some regional destinations that rely heavily on scale, Bahrain thrives on intimacy, safety and quality of experience, whether for luxury leisure, events or culinary tourism. The collaborative approach between private operators and the tourism authority further enhances its competitiveness.

Was there a moment early in your career that shaped your leadership style or approach to business?

Early in my career, managing large-scale events and hotel launches taught me the importance of adaptability and people-centric leadership, backed by a high education degree in hospitality and tourism. I learnt that empowering teams, maintaining operational discipline and staying close to guest feedback are key to long-term success. That experience shaped my management style: decisive, strategic, yet deeply grounded in operational realities.

Is there a quote or motto you live by professionally or personally?

“Excellence is never an accident; it is the result of high intention, sincere effort and intelligent execution.” This guides every aspect of our business – from strategy to guest experience – and reflects the culture we instil across Areen Hospitality. ✤

In Conversation with… Charbel Hanna

Having climbed the hospitality ladder from food and beverage operations to upper management, the General Manager of Crowne Plaza Bahrain talks about prioritising the property’s dynamism, nurturing young talent and what he looks for when dining out!

Crowne Plaza Bahrain has a long-standing reputation. What have been your main priorities in leading the hotel into its next phase?

I consider it a privilege to lead Crowne Plaza Bahrain, a property with which I share a unique connection, as we both began our journeys in 1979. This personal alignment fuels my commitment to preserving the hotel’s legacy while infusing it with youthful energy and relevance. My priority is to keep the spirit of the hotel dynamic and vibrant, ensuring it evolves with time while staying true to its identity. I believe a thriving hospitality experience comes from maintaining a sense of freshness, both in mindset and execution.

What excites you most about the current hospitality scene in Bahrain, and what do you think it still needs more of?

Bahrain’s hospitality sector has witnessed remarkable growth, with the number of hotels more than tripling in the past decade. This increased competition is a healthy driver of innovation and service excellence. What truly sets Bahrain apart, however, is the innate warmth of its people – hospitality is part of the national character. It’s this authenticity that distinguishes the guest experience here. Moving forward, the industry’s continued success lies in staying true to that natural, heartfelt service culture.

You’ve trained and led countless teams. What’s your approach to mentoring young talent in hospitality?

I believe hospitality is not just a profession, it’s a way of life. It’s driven by personality, empathy and passion. My approach to

mentoring is grounded in leading by example and instilling a mindset that values both dedication and smart work. Most successful leaders in this field started from the ground up, and I emphasise that there’s no substitute for passion. I encourage young professionals to remain curious, resilient and driven –because with those qualities, growth is inevitable.

You come from a strong food and beverage (F&B) background. Do you still miss it and what did you enjoy most about F&B operations?

Food and beverage has always been at the core of my professional foundation. Despite its reputation as one of the most demanding departments, it shaped my discipline and deepened my passion for hospitality. Even today, I naturally engage with our culinary and service teams – not to interfere but to support and share insights where needed. That operational grounding in F&B continues to inform how I lead and connect with the team, and it remains a part of the business that genuinely excites me.

Are you more of a quiet dinner kind of person or someone who enjoys being out and about? What's your favourite dining spot on the island?

By nature, I’m a quiet person. I like calm atmospheres and home is my favourite place to dine. However, in this industry, being out and about is often required. So, I appreciate fine dining spots with good food, excellent service and peaceful ambience – that’s what I look for when dining out. ✤

FUSION FLAVOURS

MEET CULINARY FLAIR

The creative genius behind KAYA’s bold blend of Mediterranean-Japanese cuisine, Executive Chef Ismael Garcia, shares fun anecdotes from the kitchen, one of his favourite cuisines and an inspired signature dish.

You’ve travelled across the globe, working in some of the world’s best kitchens, but what sparked the decision to become a chef in the first place?

For sure, it had a lot to do with watching my mum cook at home. I was always around watching the process and trying things, and after some time, I started experimenting by myself. I really enjoyed cooking for people – when family came to visit or at friend gatherings. That's how my passion grew and I decided to become a chef.

You've trained under two of Spain's top Michelin-starred chefs. Can you recall a funny or intense moment in the kitchen that's stayed with you?

Every day was intense – your ‘mise en place’ [preparing and organising ingredients and equipment before cooking] had to be perfect and on time, you had to know what was going on in other sections of the kitchen, so you had to pay attention the whole time. It was a great experience to grow as a professional but it was also challenging and intense at the same time. Luckily, I worked with great teams – not only on a professional level but also on a personal one – and I enjoyed a lot of funny moments. At the first restaurant I worked at, the tradition was that when someone was leaving, the team would pour some

colourant or something onto him, so I then went to the party with half of my hair green.

Apart from Mediterranean-Japanese, which other cuisine gets your creative juices flowing?

It’s really hard to pick just one but I believe Peruvian would be the one – for its techniques and a vast list of local ingredients. I love the flavours and the food is so colourful that it feels impossible not to mention this cuisine. Peru has great chefs and their restaurants come up in the rankings year after year. Right now, it’s a cuisine that totally deserves the spotlight.

Which signature dish at KAYA best captures your style as a chef, and what’s the inspiration behind it?

The Tiger Prawn – it’s a great fusion between a Japanese method of cooking and a very beloved dish from Spain, Gambas al Ajillo. We begin with a great product – tiger prawn – marinate it for five minutes just before cooking to respect the original flavour and texture, then smoke it in our Robata grill and finish it with a generous amount of garlic oil to cook it with precision to perfection. We then plate it in its shell and serve it with a fennel gremolata sauce – it beautifully blends Japanese and Mediterranean styles of cooking. ✤

Nestled in the heart of Seef is the impressive grand property of Royal Saray Resort, its expansive landscape as inspiring as its newest outlet, AlMassarah. As we took the golf buggy (yes, you’ll need one to shuttle across the resort’s various outlets), my colleagues and I were thrilled to be spending an afternoon here.

As soon as we entered, we were struck by the scale of AlMassarah. With its high vaulted ceiling, dark wooden beams and flower-shaped fans (I absolutely loved these), the bohoinspired pool club, restaurant and bar feels relaxed yet chic. It’s split into three interconnected areas, each with a unique colour scheme: a central lounge with comfy sage and cream sofas; a lounge bar to the right, complete with a beautifully carved wood panel, blush-pink seating and a live music stage; and the main dining area to the left, where orange cushions pop against brown wooden tables and chairs. One bamboo-clad wall features a cutout window offering a view into the open kitchen, adding to the laid-back, resort-style feel.

But the most impressive view is outdoors, where terrace seating overlooks one of the most exquisite (and largest) pools I’ve seen on the island, with a smaller children’s pool beside it, both lined with sunbeds.

As I wandered around, taking in the impressive surroundings and lively lounge music, I was snapped out of my reverie by the chatter of my friends as we were greeted by the Marketing Manager, Mai Mohamed Alhelaibi. She welcomed us and introduced the culinary experience ahead – a curated menu of fusion dishes inspired by the Mediterranean and Middle East, from mezze platters to grilled seafood. Along with the hospitality of the friendly Floor Manager, Zumrad, and our lovely waitress Safina, we knew we were in good hands.

We began with drinks: a berry-heavy mocktail that leaned on the sweeter side, a refreshing basil and green apple combo and a creamy virgin piña colada – not on the menu but quickly whipped up. Then the food arrived, and the real fun began!

We started with AlMassarah Chicken Salad – a well-balanced dish with perfectly grilled chicken and a rich honey mustard dressing that didn’t overpower. Handpicked mixed leaves, including rocket, added a fresh, peppery kick. Next, the showstopper: Avocado Fattoush. My mouth watered as the bowl released a delicious truffle aroma. It came covered with markook – thin flatbread sprinkled with zaatar – hiding the salad underneath. Safina cracked the flaky bread into pieces, tossing it through mesclun leaves, avocado, halloumi, cucumber, cherry tomatoes and pomegranate. Peppery, earthy, sweet and sour, the flavours married perfectly with the truffle molasses vinaigrette. Enough for sharing and a hit at the table, this was my favourite dish of the day. As one of my friends exclaimed: “I can finish this whole salad by myself!”

Then came the small warm plates, all arriving with style – and in one case, fire! The Wagyu Kibbe took a familiar Lebanese dish and gave it a twist. The Grade 5+ Wagyu, Panko-crumbed and deep-fried, was melt-in-the-mouth, while the Greek yogurt and tahini added richness. Elevated by the chipotle butter, this isn’t your grandmother’s kibbe, but one we’d happily go back

for. The Kaitafi Mia Taria – a fried kunafa parcel of organic feta and Turkish kashkaval wrapped in crisp vermicelli – was one of those dishes you instantly want more of. With spicy harissa, tangy tomato sauce, sweet fig compote and creamy cheese, every bite delivered something different. And then came the Flaming Halloumi. Safina flambéed it tableside with an aniseed aperitif, adding a subtle liquorice-like flavour. The salty cheese, sweet nectarine-chilli jam and hint of smokiness came together in perfect balance – a lovely little dish.

Moving on to the sharing plates, the Baby Tomahawk was another highlight. A kilo of charcoal-fired Wagyu tomahawk, expertly cooked and served with a tahini-peppercorn jus, the meat was incredibly tender, and the spicy kick of the sauce took it to another level. Simply superb. The Robata Calamari Skewer – beautifully charred Patagonian calamari – had a subtle smoky note, paired perfectly with green shatta (Middle Eastern chilli paste) and a sweet nectarine purée. The lime mayo on the side was a nice touch and tied everything together for a well-balanced bite. Appetites still eager, a buzz of anticipation grew as we awaited the next course, AlMassarah’s two signature paellas: Seafood and Robata Mixed Grill. The Spanish bomba rice, cooked in lobster and meat broths respectively, was packed with flavour. The seafood version featured Canadian lobster, tiger prawns, mussels, clams and octopus, all cooked to perfection. The grilled meat version –with Wagyu striploin, robata lamb chops and chicken skewers – was equally satisfying, each element flavourfully seasoned and seared. With just enough room to spare, we ended on a sweet note. Beautifully presented, the Pistachio Fondant tasted as decadent as it looked. Oozing a verdant pistachio sauce and topped with pistachio ice cream, caramelised nuts and gold flakes, its delicate flavour was comforting – just as a fondant should be. The Crunchy Chocolate Bliss was pure indulgence: filo pastry filled with chocolate cream, drizzled with dulce de leche, creamy chocolate sauce and finished with candied walnuts and vanilla ice cream. Imagine it as a Nutella baklava – rich, delightfully crunchy and utterly irresistible. A must for those with a sweet tooth. AlMassarah’s spacious layout, intimate seating areas and impressive outdoor terrace make it ideal for all occasions, from casual bites to celebratory feasts. Come for sunset drinks, a leisurely lunch or, like us, spend the whole afternoon. ✤

NEW BRUNCH HITS ADLIYA

Mirai Restaurant & Lounge in Adliya has launched the new Kazoku Brunch, offering a taste of its creative menu. Fernanda Langhammer checked out the set menu and all it has to offer.

Mirai Restaurant & Lounge, located in Block 338, is a benchmark for Japanese gastronomy, offering an array of high-quality ingredients and recipes that are authentic in every sense.

Chef Junior Gomez, the driving force behind all of Mirai’s exciting projects, adds creativity to the menu without compromising the essential elements of Japanese cuisine.

Not my first visit, this time I went to try the eatery’s recently launched brunch concept. The ambience is minimalist, with a few Japanese elements, such as noren, small curtains easily spotted in businesses and homes in Japan, and kazaridaru, decorative barrels that represent respect and gratitude, typically adorned with labels featuring calligraphy and crests. However, the little bonsai casually placed on the sushi counter gives the tone to the place – a refined yet casual spot, where food is the main character.

The Kazoku Brunch by Mirai is a selection of dishes that perfectly summarises the restaurant’s menu. Kazoku means ‘family’ in Japanese, and this set menu brunch is perfect to be enjoyed in the company of loved ones. The experience serves up to two people and you can choose one or two dishes from each section of the menu. However, in the Sushi Bar and Maki, you get a selection of sashimi, nigiri and makis. Trust me, it is a paradise for enthusiasts of this cuisine.

We started with the soup; you can opt for miso or Spicy Jambong. They were both delicious, but the Jambong was a highlight for me. Its miso dashi base was slightly spicy, with pieces of shrimp, green mussels, baby squid and scallops cooked to perfection – a difficult task to achieve when they are all part of this flavourful, warm liquid – I couldn’t stop going back for more.

In the salad, you have three options to choose from: octopus, vegan and spinach – we tried the first two. The braised Atlantic octopus, beautifully cooked and cut into small slices, was a standout. Paired with pomelo, edamame, green leaves, beetroot and red radish, this salad is like a summer day by the beach in spoonful form. It was refreshing, covered with a traditional goma dressing made with toasted sesame seeds, adding creamy, tangy and umami hints – absolutely divine.

We tried a few dishes from the Hot Kitchen. The classic chicken gyoza was a burst of flavour; the little packets, filled with a concoction of finely chopped grilled chicken, cabbage and other vegetables, were dressed in spicy ponzu sauce. The dough was lightweight and slightly glazed at the bottom, as expected from a good gyoza. The Tuna Crispy Rice was small bites of a fried rice base, seasoned and topped with a generous amount of fresh tuna. The crunchiness of the rice with the softness of the raw fish made this one of my favourite dishes, delicate yet bold in textures. Tempura is a traditional cooking technique that involves deep-frying. We had the pink shrimp with spicy mayo (Mirai’s version of popcorn shrimp) covered with a light batter, and the vegetable tempura came with a selection of veggies – to my surprise, the asparagus worked really well cooked this way.

We had two bao buns: the chicken katsu, filled with a crispy panko chicken fillet and pickled onion, accompanied by yuzu kosho mayo, and the beef short ribs, composed of braised short ribs, pickled cucumbers and wasabi mayo. Both baos had delicious

and unique flavours, but the buns were amazing, like clouds, extremely soft and delivered a pleasant sensation to our palates. When it comes to sashimi, nigiri and makis, Mirai’s are hard to beat. The thick sashimi slices of salmon, hamachi, tuna, tuna belly and seabass were fantastic. The freshness of the fish, skilfully sliced by the chefs, is a detail that didn’t pass unnoticed. The selection of makis included the Chef’s Special made with yellow tuna, salmon skin, crispy unagi and shredded spicy crab with a hint of unagi sauce to add a caramel-like taste – it was everyone’s pick. But we also tried the California, Nagoya and a selection of veggie options.

However, that was not all; there were also the main courses to choose from. We tried the Mushroom Bibimpab, a comforting bowl of well-seasoned rice with vegetarian teriyaki glaze and a hint of truffle oil; it was absolutely splendid. The other dish was the Platinum Mix-Breed Wagyu Beef, featuring tender pieces of striploin 7+ (the number refers to the marbling score of the meat, and a score above seven indicates it’s of high premium range) grilled to preserve the outstanding quality of this special cut. The last dish, and my favourite, was the Black Cod. Marinated in den miso (a sweet and savoury glaze), this piece of fish was flaky with intense flavours. I loved the crispy bits mixed with the softness of the meat. I have tried it in many different places and Mirai prepares it outstandingly.

There is no brunch without dessert and, to help us out, a selection of them reached the table. We had the Matcha Tiramisu, a Japanese twist on the classic Italian and as lightweight as the original, with matcha flavour instead of coffee. A few mochi

options, matcha and yuzu ice cream (the latter being incredibly yummy and refreshing) and the delectable Yuzu Cheesecake. I am not a big fan of cheesecakes but the yuzu flavour gave a lemony taste, and I adore lemon tarts, so it was a big win for me.

If you enjoy Asian flavours (mainly Japanese), high-quality ingredients, a comfortable ambience and a place that offers a genuine spread, then Mirai is all of that and more. The brunch will restart on September 5 and will be available every Friday from 1pm to 4pm, with a choice of different beverage packages. ✤

A CULINARY CANVAS

Seeking an unforgettable dining experience that transcends the ordinary, Amira Ragab discovered a masterpiece of flavours and design at China Garden – Al Liwan.

Stepping into China Garden – Al Liwan is akin to entering a meticulously curated art gallery, where the culinary experience is the masterpiece. From the moment you're greeted by the beckoning Maneki Neko, a symbol of good fortune, you're enveloped in a world where design and flavour intertwine in perfect harmony.

The restaurant's interior is a visual feast. Bold colours dance with delicate, handcrafted details, creating a symphony of contrasts that captivates the eye. The walls whisper stories, most notably through a magnificent, hand-painted mural of a lady. The artistry is breathtaking; one can almost feel the texture of the ink on her skin, the weight of her gaze. It's a piece that commands attention, a testament to the skill and vision of the artist.

Looking upwards, the ceiling is a canvas of its own, handpainted with a delicate tracery of gold and white flowers that adds a touch of whimsy and romance to the space. The lighting, carefully orchestrated to enhance the ambience, features sleek, linear tube lights arranged in a modern, geometric pattern. These contemporary fixtures create a sense of spaciousness and visual interest, providing a subtle counterpoint to the more traditional elements. Wall lights, resembling antique gramophones, cast a warm, inviting glow, adding a touch of vintage charm. The colour palette, a striking blend of bold reds, deep teals and earthy browns, creates a vibrant yet grounded atmosphere. Sleek, modern furniture is juxtaposed with plush banquettes, offering a comfortable and stylish dining experience. The tables themselves, a mix of red, bronze and black, are thoughtfully

appointed, and we were particularly impressed with the modern pottery serving plates that adorned our brown table, each a work of art in its own right.

The service is as impeccable as the décor. Evelyn, our server, greeted us with a cheerful, heartwarming smile, adorned with a beautiful, authentic Chinese headpiece. The staff's attire is equally captivating, with servers in burgundy and black and hostesses in silky black traditional Chinese dresses. Restaurant Manager, Isaias Alexis Vergara, was incredibly helpful throughout our visit, patiently recommending dishes and offering insightful pairings.

Chef Chao Ding, Brand Chef for China Garden, also extended a warm welcome, setting the stage for a delightful meal.

As we waited for our food, we enjoyed the subtle strains of classic Oriental music playing in the background. Then, the starters began to arrive. We commenced with the Vegetable Spring Rolls, a delightful and generously portioned combination of crisp, nonoily puff pastry filled with crunchy, flavourful cabbage, carrots and spring onions, served with a sweet chilli dipping sauce. Next came the Chicken Shao Mai steamed dumplings. These plump little parcels, with their ground chicken, ginger, carrot and spring onion filling, were perfectly steamed and presented with a soy sauce for dipping. I must confess, I fell completely in love with these chubby dumplings – a veritable remedy for those heartwarming cravings on lonely nights.

For the main course, my vegetarian companion and partner-incrime opted for the Mapo Tofu, which proved to be a revelation. Even as someone who typically avoids tofu, I found myself drawn to her dish, sneaking a taste. Surprisingly, I found myself

thoroughly enjoying it. The ground Sichuan peppercorns, ginger, garlic, carrots, silken tofu, green peas, shiitake mushroom and sweet corn created a complex and satisfying flavour profile, garnished with cilantro and served with steamed rice topped with fried garlic – a perfect pairing, as recommended by Isaias.

My own choice was the Crispy Beef – fried shredded beef with sweet chilli sauce, spring onions, carrots, red and yellow bell peppers, red onions and sesame seeds, offering a delightful crunch in every bite. However, one cannot truly experience Chinese cuisine without sampling a sweet and sour dish, so I also ordered the Sweet and Sour Prawns, with red and yellow bell pepper and pineapple accompaniment, a classic executed with exceptional finesse.

Despite feeling quite replete, we couldn't resist the chef's recommendation of Toffee Banana with Vanilla Ice Cream for dessert. The tempura-fried banana, coated in caramel and served with a side of vanilla ice cream, was faultless – not too sweet – just perfect. The vanilla ice cream, with a deliciously strong flavour, was a delight with every spoonful. It was the perfect sweet ending to a memorable meal.

As we sat there, succumbing to a pleasant food coma, we were served an authentic Chinese tea in a glass pot with two pottery mugs. It made me wish I had discovered this place earlier in the year, to sit outside during Bahrain's beautiful winter weather, cradling a cup of warm tea.

China Garden isn't simply a restaurant; it's an invitation to indulge in a world where artistry and gastronomy intertwine. The beauty of the setting is matched only by the excellence of the food, creating

an experience that's both sophisticated and deeply satisfying. Whether you're planning an intimate dinner or a grand family gathering, China Garden offers the perfect backdrop for creating cherished moments. We are already planning our return. ✤

LAST-MINUTE SUMMER BREAKS

Need one final escape before the school run takes over your calendar? These last-minute getaways are perfect for a spontaneous, no-fuss trip before real life resumes – all with direct flights from Bahrain. Book now, pack light and make the most of the holidays while they last.

ATHENS & THE GREEK ISLANDS

Athens is one of those cities that blends past and present with zero effort – one minute you’re standing under the Parthenon, the next you’re eating grilled octopus on a rooftop bar overlooking it. The summer buzz here is real, cafés spill onto the streets, locals stay out late and everything feels gloriously unhurried. Lose yourself in the cobbled alleys of Plaka, climb the ancient Acropolis or catch panoramic views from Mount Lycabettus. Culture lovers will find plenty to dig into (the Acropolis Museum is a must) but it’s also easy to just sit back with a cold frappé and watch the world go by. Once you’ve had your city fix, the Greek islands come calling – many just a quick ferry ride away. Santorini and Mykonos get the spotlight but Hydra, Paros and Naxos offer a more relaxed charm with whitewashed villages and low-key beaches. Aegina, meanwhile, is a lovely day trip from Piraeus port, with pistachio groves and seaside cafés. Of course, the food is a highlight – mezze plates, souvlaki (skewered meat), spanakopita (spinach feta pie) and loukoumades (Greek doughnuts). Don’t miss the Varvakios central market for real-deal Greek flavours! Athens is the kind of getaway that resets your mood without exhausting your energy – ideal for squeezing in one last proper break.

BANGKOK, THAILAND

There’s something about Bangkok that just hits different. The city moves fast – tuk-tuks weaving through traffic, markets spilling into alleys and neon signs flashing late into the night. If you’re up for a jolt of energy, this is the place. Start slow with a temple tour – Wat Pho’s giant reclining Buddha is a must-see and the riverside Wat Arun looks magical at dusk. Hop on a traditional longtail boat through the canals and make a stop at Wat Paknam, Bangkok’s largest Buddha, and continue on to one of the city’s iconic floating markets. Then dive headfirst into the street-food capital of the world. Whether it’s spicy papaya salad in Silom, pad thai and mango sticky rice in Yaowarat or a fullon night market crawl in Chatuchak, you’ll eat well at every turn. Khao San Road still pulses with backpacker energy but other neighbourhoods like Ari or Ekkamai offer a more laid-back feel with creative cafés and boutiques. Cool off at a sky-high rooftop bar or sneak in some shopping at one of the many malls (Siam Paragon, Central World, MBK Center). And if time allows, a quick flight to Chiang Mai or Phuket is always an option. Bangkok is chaotic yet comforting – leaving you grinning, full and wanting more.

MILAN, ITALY

Milan in late summer is underrated – most tourists head for Rome or Florence, which leaves this northern gem pleasantly easy to navigate. Being Italy’s fashion capital, it might be stylish but there’s more to it than catwalks and couture. Start with the iconic Duomo (Milan Cathedral) –its gothic marble spires and rooftop views are worth the climb – then wander through the grand Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II (Italy’s oldest active shopping arcade) for some luxurious window shopping. The Navigli canals are full of charm, dotted with vintage markets, cafés and bars, where you can sample the local aperitivo culture (enjoy a classic bitter-sweet Italian mix with olives). Food is a big deal and there’s something for every craving – from risotto alla Milanese and cotoletta (breaded veal cutlet) to paperthin pizzas and all the gelato you can handle! For art lovers, Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper is one of the most interesting attractions at Santa Maria delle Grazie, while design enthusiasts will love the sleek spaces of Triennale Milano. For a break from the city, the beautiful Lake Como is an easy hour away by train – all sunlit villas and slow ferry rides. Whether you’re travelling solo or with kids, Milan makes a relaxed, culture-filled stop.

NAIROBI, KENYA

Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, is wild in all the right ways. You can go from sipping strong Kenyan coffee in a stylish café to spotting rhinos on safari – all within the same morning.

Just a short drive from the city centre, Nairobi National Park is one of the only places in the world where you can see lions, giraffes and zebras with a city skyline in the background. Don’t miss the Giraffe Centre for a truly up-close encounter or the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust to visit rescued baby elephants (pro tip: adopt one online before you go). But Nairobi is more than just a gateway to safari –it’s a dynamic, energetic city with loads to do. Food-wise, try nyama choma (chargrilled meat) with kachumbari salad at a local joint or dig into a full Swahili coconut curry. In between, shop colourful beadwork and woven bags at the Maasai Market or, for a slice of calm, explore Karura Forest – ideal for walking or biking. If you’ve been waiting for the right moment to dip your toes into Africa, Nairobi offers just the right amount of wild-meets-urban for a short, unforgettable break.

SALALAH, OMAN

While most of the Gulf is still sizzling, Salalah is in the middle of its Khareef (monsoon) season, making it hugely popular during this time. From July to September, the Dhofar region

is swept by monsoon weather and transforms into a misty green oasis. Think rain-soaked hills, trickling waterfalls and grass-carpeted valleys – a rare sight in the region and a great escape from the blazing Bahrain heat. Nature takes centre stage here and the cool air means you can actually hike without melting – or take long drives through fogdraped mountains with your windows down. Spot camels wandering past banana plantations and frankincense trees growing wild, all while sipping fresh coconut water from a roadside stall. For stunning views, wander through Wadi Darbat’s surreal landscapes, head up into the cloud-covered cliffs of Jabal Ittin or picnic near Ain Athum’s springs. On the coast, Mughsail Beach makes for a wild, scenic outing with dramatic waves and blowholes guaranteed to leave you soaked yet entertained. There’s history too – ancient ruins, UNESCO sites and a rich maritime legacy tied to the frankincense trade. With its fresh air and laid-back pace, this is a no-rush, recharge kind of break – a brilliant lastminute pick if you’re looking for something close to home but completely different.

Some great new sounds for you to check out this month.

MOISTURIZER

The second studio album from British rockers Wet Leg and the first to feature guitarist Josh Mobaraki, bass guitarist Ellis Durand and drummer Henry Holmes as full contributing members.

After the runaway success of the band’s self-titled first album in 2022, there were fears that this follow-up would suffer the infamous second release slump, but it’s quickly become a hit with critics and fans alike, having hit #1 on the UK Albums Chart. Described as catchy with a great indie-rock vibe, this could turn out to be the sound of the summer.

VERONICAELECTRONICA

A remix album featuring the veteran songstress at, arguably, her creative and musical best. These tracks were recorded between 1997 and ’98 and the album was originally conceived as a remix from her phenomenally successful Ray of Light, but shelved. Fans are in for a treat with rare and previously unreleased or remastered remixes from the era, with several collaborators, including Peter Rauhofer, William Orbit, Sasha, BT and Victor Calderone. It also includes Gone Gone Gone, a previously unreleased demo with producer Rick Nowels.

PRIVATEMUSIC

Decades on from their awe-inspiring debut, Adrenaline, the American alt-metal rockers have come up with a meditative offering that showcases the band at their most evolved. At once a psychedelic voyage and a skullrattling wallop, it’s the latest peak in a catalogue filled with immersive, emotive triumphs. Alongside Chino Moreno, Stephen Carpenter, Abe Cunningham and Frank Delgado is touring bassist Fred Sablan for an 11-song set that’s lean and masterfully produced by Nick Raskulinecz, who previously worked on Diamond Eyes

FROM CANVAS TO CAMERA

Bahraini artist, director and photographer, Jaan AlBalushi, is a man of many talents – whether he’s picking up a paintbrush or stepping behind the camera. In an exclusive candid interview, Apple Sharma caught up with him to explore his dynamic personality and passions, including an undeniable love for karak!

Jaan AlBalushi

fact: When and how did your artistic journey start – did the canvas come first or the camera?

JA: Oh, definitely the canvas! I think I was in grade five or six when I first discovered that sketching during boring classes was actually called ‘art’. Then I got into painting school walls – like actual giant murals, not graffiti (I promise!). But the real chaos started when someone trusted me with a big professional camera for my sister’s wedding. Long story short, she still doesn’t talk about that day. I completely messed it up. So, I ran back to my comfort zone – canvases! Eventually, that led me to video and finally to photography. Basically, my journey is like a Bollywood movie plot…full of drama and random flashbacks!

fact: You wear many creative hats – artist, filmmaker, photographer, teacher. From street art to Flipperachi’s latest Doori video – where do you feel most at home?

JA: All of them! But hey, you forgot to mention Harley rider and professional karak taster! I get bored super quickly, so doing the same thing every day would drive me crazy. I love trying new things, learning different styles and keeping my creative muscles confused. But if I were to choose one soulmate, it would be art –pure, messy, emotional, anything-goes kind of art. That’s my home.

fact: With over 15 years in the industry, what continues to inspire your creativity and is there one thing you know now that you wish you’d learnt at the start?

JA: Alhamdulillah, a lot of my learning came through doing real work with real clients, which means I made real mistakes! But if I could go back and whisper something into young Jaan’s ear, it would be: “Hey bro, media and art are gold – don’t waste time

Cristiano Ronaldo on carpet

selling apartments and fixing internet cables!” I used to work in real estate while studying IT – yes, that was a wild combo. But the fire really started when I realised the true value of creativity.

fact: You’ve taught workshops across the globe. Has there been a moment during one of these sessions that’s stayed with you?

JA: Oh yes – two moments are actually tattooed on my heart. The first was at the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles (I know, confusing, right?). I went there for a filmmaking course but somehow ended up giving a motivational speech on their stage. Don’t ask how that happened but I still have goosebumps thinking about it! The second one was when I gave a talk at the University of Bahrain in front of more than 1,000 students. I was about to cry –not out of fear but because I felt so proud and happy. I mean, who cries from happiness during public speaking? Apparently, I do.

fact: Having been behind the camera for international commercials and films – what’s been your favourite project and what’s your dream collaboration?

JA: Definitely my feature film Zaraab, which I shot in the breathtaking lands of Balochistan back in 2018. It picked up a few international awards and a whole lot of love. But honestly, every project I work on feels like a baby (a moody, unpredictable, budget-blowing baby – but still a baby!) As for dream collabs? Hmm…maybe something with Wes Anderson or Christopher Nolan but shot in Sitra with karak breaks in between!

fact: What’s one unexpected thing you always travel with when you're on a shoot abroad?

JA: A proper karak dallah [Arabic pot]! Not kidding. While others pack extra batteries and gimbals, I’m out here brewing karak in remote villages or city rooftops. I even once offered it to a customs officer – he let me pass with a smile. Karak is not just a drink, it’s a lifestyle! ✤

Just For Fun

fact: Early mornings or late nights?

JA: Very, very, very late nights. Like vampire-level late.

fact: Studio or location?

JA: Both – but locations make it feel like an adventure (with sunburn and insect bites included).

fact: Instagram or TikTok?

JA: Insta! TikTok is like my hyper cousin I visit sometimes but can’t keep up with.

fact: Netflix or cinema?

JA: Cinema, hands down. Popcorn, surround sound, awkward first trailers – I love it all.

fact: Coffee or karak?

JA: Karaaak! Like…do I even look like a coffee person?

What We’re (Still) Talking About

Banking on Public Taste

The Bank of England has asked the public to help design the next batch of banknotes. Yes, the same people who once voted to name a £200 million research ship Boaty McBoatface are now being handed the creative reins over actual money. This isn’t a drill. You could, theoretically, suggest putting David Attenborough in a bucket hat on the tenner or nominate your nan for her cottage pie. It’s all part of a public

engagement campaign to get fresh ideas, though it’s highly possible that the suggestions box might soon be full of animated characters and Harry Styles in bizarre outfits. It’s a bold move from the bank but if chaos is what they wanted, the internet will definitely deliver. After all, in a country where putting the kettle on counts as doing something about the situation, letting the people design the currency feels not surprisingly, British.

Caught in the Act

It started innocently enough: a Coldplay concert, a packed stadium and a classic kiss cam moment. Only this time, the camera panned to Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and Head of HR Kristin Cabot. What followed was the most awkward moment of the decade where one tried to hide while the other one reached out for their drink. Chris Martin, never one to miss a moment, joked: “Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy.”

The video went viral instantly and soon, both executives (married but not to each other) stepped down. Naturally, the memes were glorious. F1 fans gave us sad George Russell edits, with Toto romancing Max in the background, while others imagined HR policies rewritten by Coldplay lyrics. But the weirdest twist was when Gwyneth Paltrow was announced as the company's new spokesperson. Moral of the story? If you're on the kiss cam, make sure to play it cool.

Superdog to the Rescue

Superman might be catching falling planes, but it’s his furry sidekick whose truly saving the day. Following the release of the Superman movie, Krypto the Superdog, whose CGI is modelled after director James Gunn’s own rescue pup, Ozu, has sparked a 500% surge in dog adoption interest online. Suddenly, everyone wants a loyal companion. Shelters are delighted, of course, but experts have issued a gentle word

of caution to not get swept away by the hype. A dog might look great in a cape, but they also come with chewed slippers, vet bills and a desperate need for a morning walk when you’re still half-asleep. But, if Krypto’s screen time means more rescue dogs find forever homes, we’re all for it. Just remember that real-life superdogs need more than just admiration. They need your time, patience and the occasional belly rubs full of love.
