Foundation for the Advancement of Catholic Schools Providing students of all faiths an opportunity to receive an outstanding education.

Over the past 34 years, many scholarship funds have been created due to the generosity of our FACS donors and under the guidance of our dedicated Board of Trustees. Included in this issue is a list of our donors, funds, scholarship distributions, a spotlight on a few of our recipients and a moving thank you letter from appreciative students. YOUR support and donations directly allow more children an opportunity to receive a first-rate education in an Archdiocese of Hartford Catholic School, a gift that will last a lifetime!

17th Annual Archbishop ’s St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast Nearly 1,000 people came to celebrate 17-17-17, the 17th Annual Archbishop’s St. Patrick Day Breakfast held on March 17, 2017 at the CT Convention Center to support Catholic school students. After Archbishop Leonard P. Blair welcomed the guests and shared his words of wisdom, he delighted the crowd with his well-received humor. FACS guests enjoyed listening to Guest Speaker, Mark K. Shriver and his message of hope. Spot-lighted essayist, Mary W. shared “The Archbishop’s Scholarship has allowed me to learn, pray and succeed because it made my Catholic education possible. Without it, I do not believe that I would be as involved in my faith or academics as I am today”.

Governor Dannel Malloy and Mayor Luke Bronin showed their support at this great event too. We hope to see YOU there next year on Friday, March 16, 2018!

PRESIDENT’S LETTER - Brian A. Giantonio, Esq. Greetings to all! Our goal is to assist students in every Archdiocese of Hartford Catholic school. I welcome you to join us.

This year marks the 34th anniversary of FACS. Since 1983, FACS has provided nearly $14 million in assistance throughout our Archdiocese. Each year we receive and process hundreds of scholarship applications and are proud to announce that, to date, for the 2017-2018 School Year we have awarded $371,891 to 271 recipients. And that’s just a start. Those numbers will grow after additional scholarship distributions from the 2017 Archbishop’s Columbus Day Breakfast.

Last year’s Archbishop’s Columbus Day Breakfast was held on October 7th and earned its highest net proceeds since it’s inception. With a generous match from the Archdiocese, FACS was able to grant more than $82,000 in tuition assistance to over 120 students in 11 Catholic Schools in the New Haven area. Our guests enjoyed speaker and sports legend Bobby Valentine who shared his humor and inspiration, talking about respect, responsibility and reality, his version of the “3 R’s”, and how vitally important these concepts are in educating our children.

An increase in sponsorships and continuing loyal support made the Archbishop’s St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast our most successful ever. Our guest speaker was author, Mark Kennedy Shriver, a returning FACS Friend who not only enlightened but inspired us. All were equally moved by a poignant story from FACS scholarship recipient Mary who just graduated from Northwest Catholic High School. She shared how important Catholic education is to her and how valuable FACS scholarship assistance has been in helping her attend Catholic school. She touched the hearts of all who heard her speak.

We hosted a full field of golfers at the FORE FACS Golf Classic, held May 15th at Shelter Harbor Golf Club. The net proceeds from this event surpassed prior years.

We are grateful to our sponsors for their very generous donations of raffle and auction items. See page 7 for that photo of Nicholas who had his dream of attending a Red Sox game come true.

Your support changes not only the life of a child, it changes communities. The Foundation believes that Catholic schools provide students with an “education for a lifetime,” especially for the poor and underserved children and youth of the Archdiocese of Hartford. We exist because caring people who understand the value of Catholic schools to the child, the family, the neighborhood, Connecticut and society as a whole have been donating time, talent and treasure for over 34 years.

High School Student Spotlight - Meet some of our current Scholars!

Hugh is a recipient of the Hartford Inner City Scholarship. He is looking forward to attending East Catholic High School to enjoy smaller class sizes and personalized attention for academics. At a chance meeting with East Catholic’s Sarah Adanti, at the Ebony Horsewomen Farm in Hartford’s north end where Hugh volunteers, he mentioned his dream of attending East Catholic H.S. His dream will come true this fall thanks to the efforts of FACS and East Catholic. Hugh also loves to play football, is an equestrian and is excited about joining East Catholic's Interscholastic Equestrian Association Team. He has been riding horses since he was six years old.

Yucel, a senior at Northwest Catholic High School, is a recipient of the Hartford Inner City Scholarship. He is involved in many extra curricular activities, including Connectkids, drama, new student's tours and dance repertory. His English Teacher said, “It’s hard to imagine NWCHS without Yucel. Whether in the classroom, the hallway passing time, or at a school-wide pep rally, or on stage, Yucel embodies the true meaning of enthusiasm, entheos, or one inspired by God. The perpetual smile on Yucel’s face, his commitment to his academic studies, his respectful and caring attitude toward everyone he meets, and his willingness to share his gifts of dance on the stage, are just some of the ways in which Yucel shows the world that God’s spirit is shining brightly within.” Yucel’s twin brother, Yael, also attends NWCHS.

Jonathan, a junior at Sacred Heart High School, is a recipient of the Archbishop’s Scholarship and resides in Waterbury. He is a member of the Heart’s International Club and is actively involved in the community, having volunteered at the Brass Mill Charter School for the past two years.

Jonathan is very appreciative of the opportunity to attend Sacred Heart High School and feels this scholarship is allowing him to be a part of a faith-based school where he can live his faith each and every day.

Jordan was St. Paul Catholic High School’s Class of 2017 Valedictorian and a recipient of the Archbishop’s Scholarship.

Class President for four years, Jordan is heading to Harvard University this fall to follow a medical career path hoping to eventually work in orthopedics.

Additionally, Jordan also served as captain of the varsity football and wrestling teams. As a FACS scholarship recipient, Jordan felt he was able to incorporate his faith into his education and realize his academic and leadership potential.

More exciting news... 

The Maximilian E. and Marion O. Hoffman Foundation, Inc. awarded FACS a new grant in the amount of $116,000 earlier this year. These funds are being used to award new four year renewable scholarships to Archdiocesan High School students. We are very thankful to the Hoffman Foundation for their continuing support of FACS and the scholarship fund that has been created in its name.



In January, FACS was once again blessed with a generous $100,000 gift from an anonymous donor, which will allow us to help many deserving students . We are ever so appreciative of this donor’s continuing philanthropy and faith in the FACS mission.



In recognition of long-standing and dedicated former Trustee, David T. Chase, FACS has established a new scholarship fund in Mr. Chases’ name. Many thanks to the Rhoda and David Chase Family Foundation who has added to the fund with a significant $25,000 donation to the David T. Chase Scholarship Fund. This meaningful gift will help many students and for that we are most grateful!



We are pleased that former Emeritus Trustee Monsignor Charles W. Daly had the faith in our foundation to leave a bequest to FACS. We are grateful for the generosity and insight of Monsignor Daly whose wise counsel will be missed. Thank you to Monsignor Daly and all who remember FACS in their estate planning.


