“The Mirrored Perceptions of Light” makes the argument that light, understood as an instrument of representation, questions the limits of architectural design and its techniques. The research frames and questions Luis Barragan’s Chapel of Capuchinas role of color, flatness, and texture as artifacts in relation to light that conveyed an optical illusion while processing an image of an architectural space. The research analyze Barragan’s posture of design in the chapel and his usage of projections, alterations of perspectives, and reflections. How concepts like a person’s qualia or “Trompe-L’oeil” can manipulate architecture. Expanding our knowledge on how “light” can transmit different perspectives within a space. The chapel functioning as an image transcriber or “Camara Obscura” that produces different realities perceived by the human eye and how this causes everyone to have a different experience in said space.

Our main focus in this research was the human eye, and how light could cause some sort of illusionism inside the Chapel of Capuchinas. With time the research took a turn into the possibility of a holographic phenomenon conveyed by concepts like the distortion of an spectators qualia, possible usage of Trompel’oeil within the space, and opened the possibility of the chapel working as an heliographical device that could transcribe peculiar imagery. The discovery made the idea of multiple realities within a space be considered a possibility. A religious space viewed in infinite ways causing emotions within the spectators such as beauty, magic, serenity, amazement, silence, love, peace, intimacy, inspiration that in one way or another would impact the user’s experience. How the different imagery caused by the holograms produced by the heliographical device created by the sun are projected through space creates a sense of illusion unique to each person. The human being has different perceptions that makes each exploration different whether it is the visual, spatial, form, tactile. Luis Barragan, in a way forces you to explore them within the chapel, and provides a space enjoyable for anyone with any belief, motive, or state playing with the perception of space. Light is a representative instrument that can not only challenge architecture to go beyond its limits but the human brain as well creating infinite realities coherent to each individual.
The Historic Center of Ponce has been lacking to offer activities related to local commerce but has recently started to flourish. As an effect, the concept of utilizing the building as a way to expand and attract the public within the area proposing a mixed-use building with a sidewalk that penetrates the building and leads the crowd to its commercial area. Providing a coffee shop/restaurant, commercial premises that will be available for rent for local businesses, institutional offices, and apartments. The goal was to have 3 completely different programs and somehow unite them, while still being separated to maintain privacy yet attract tourists, and the usage of curvature to create a certain rhythm in the facade as a way to invite guests inside.
AESTETIK is a visionary project situated in the heart of the Historic Center of Ponce, aimed at revitalizing the area and enriching the cultural landscape. Recognizing the burgeoning local commerce scene and the need for vibrant community spaces, our proposal reimagines an existing building as a dynamic mixed-use complex, seamlessly blending commerce, culture, and hospitality.
At the forefront of our design is the concept of integration and connectivity. A central feature of the building is a striking sidewalk that penetrates the structure, serving as a welcoming pathway for pedestrians and drawing them into the bustling commercial area within. This innovative design element not only fosters foot traffic but also creates a sense of cohesion between the building and its surroundings.
AESTETIK offers a diverse range of amenities and services to cater to the needs of both locals and tourists. The ground floor boasts a charming coffee shop/restaurant, providing a cozy retreat for patrons to savor artisanal brews and culinary delights. Adjacent to the dining area are commercial premises available for rent, offering a platform for local businesses to showcase their products and services. Additionally, the building houses institutional offices and apartments, catering to a mix of residential and professional needs.Despite the distinct functions housed within the building, our design prioritizes unity and coherence. The layout ensures that each program maintains its privacy while still fostering interaction and collaboration among occupants. The strategic use of curvature in the facade creates a rhythmic pattern that not only adds visual interest but also serves as a subtle invitation for guests to explore the interior spaces.
n the heart of Ponce, Puerto Rico, where the pulse of creativity beats strong, emerges the Art Block Gallery—a dynamic cultural oasis poised to enrich the city’s artistic landscape. As the Historic Center of Ponce experiences a resurgence in commerce and cultural activity, our proposal aims to contribute to this revitalization by establishing a vibrant hub for artistic expression and community engagement.
The vision for Art Block Gallery is rooted in the idea of creating a versatile and inviting space that celebrates local art while also attracting visitors from near and far. Situated within a historic building, the gallery offers a unique blend of heritage and contemporary flair, serving as a bridge between the past and the present.
At the heart of Art Block Gallery is its commitment to showcasing diverse forms of artistic expression. From paintings and sculptures to multimedia installations and performance art, the gallery provides a platform for both established and emerging artists to share their vision with the world. Through rotating exhibitions and events, Art Block Gallery fosters a dynamic dialogue between creators and audiences, sparking conversations and igniting imaginations.
ART BLOCK GALLERY project is a groundbreaking endeavor aimed at redefining the traditional concept of art exhibition spaces. Designed to challenge the conventional boundaries of architecture and art curation, this innovative museum concept offers a dynamic and flexible environment that adapts to the evolving needs of both artists and visitors.
Built upon the principles of modularity and versatility. The entire structure is composed of interchangeable modules, each serving a specific function such as exhibition galleries, workshops, event spaces, and administrative areas. These modules are designed to be easily assembled, disassembled, and rearranged according to the curatorial vision or the requirements of specific exhibitions.
In addition to its flexible architecture, the Modular Art Museum incorporates state-of-the-art technology to enrich the visitor experience. Interactive displays, augmented reality installations, and immersive multimedia presentations are seamlessly integrated into the exhibition spaces, providing visitors with a multi-sensory journey through the world of art.
Furthermore, sustainability and environmental consciousness are central to the design philosophy of the museum. The modular construction system allows for efficient use of materials and resources, minimizing waste and reducing the carbon footprint of the building. Renewable energy sources, such as solar panels and wind turbines, are incorporated into the structure to further reduce its environmental impact.
The idea of art has always intrigued me, they offer a powerful means of visual communication that transcends language barriers and resonates with diverse audiences on an emotional level. Graphical explorations have the unique ability to convey complex ideas and concepts in a visually engaging manner, fostering deeper understanding and connection with our audience. By integrating these explorations into our project, we can stimulate creativity, spark curiosity, and evoke meaningful responses, ultimately enriching the overall experience for our viewers. Moreover, graphical explorations provide an opportunity for experimentation and innovation, allowing us to push the boundaries of traditional design and explore new artistic horizons. I believe that by harnessing the visual impact of graphical explorations, we can create a compelling narrative that captivates our audience and leaves a lasting impression.
