Honoring Esthetician Eli Jones
“If you want to know the truth … I really wasn’t sure what I was doing.” This is what I tell students when they ask how I started in beauty education. As it turns out, I come from a family with a long background in barbering and cosmetology. My great-grandfather, DC Orr, started the Skyland Barber Shop in 1930 on Main Street in Hendersonville, North Carolina (an idyllic Andy Griffithesque establishment that remains to this day); my grandfather, Walter Orr, became a licensed barber in the 60s; and several of my great-uncles and cousins on his wife’s – my grandmother Doris’ – side became barbers. In similar fashion, a majority of the ladies in the family, aunts and cousins, became cosmetologists and beauticians of sorts. So, it felt right that I should do something straddling the barbering and cosmetology professions … but what would that be exactly? Well…
I began my esthetics training in August 2001 by enrolling in a program offered at a local community college in the town of Flat Rock. At 19 years old, I had no particular expectation of where this decision would lead, no mappedout career path, and no clear understanding of what esthetics entailed for that matter – I only knew that I had been out of high school for a year and that something had to be
done. So, as I began to learn about beauty services, cosmetic ingredients, and the skin’s physiological-histological composition, I became increasingly fascinated with the discipline. I would sometimes think of how only a few years before, researching fixes for my severe acne prompted a developing interest in anything dermatological. It occurred to me that this profession, if approached well, could be a great way to help others avoid what I had endured.
Upon graduation and completion of the NC state board esthetics exam, I put my new license to the test by going directly into the salon. I enjoyed my work and the benefits it provided clients. But I quickly learned that there was as much of a passion for client education as there was for service provision. With this realization, I returned to school the following year for the instructor training program, graduated again, passed another state board exam, and much to my great surprise, at age 21, found myself employed as the college’s adjunct esthetics instructor.
From 2004 to 2008, I had the privilege of being the first point of contact for students hoping
1
to enter the beauty industry. During this time, I resolved to build upon my foundational education by seeking out postgraduate training. I found this primarily in the International Dermal Institute of Atlanta, Georgia where one of my favorite teachers, Goldie Bonnell, simplified many complex subjects and clarified much of what my prior training left vague. As a matter of fact, the achievement of the 100Hour Postgraduate and 300-Hour Honors Diplomas serve as bookends to my first four years of teaching. So, information learned from the Atlanta institute was brought back to the classroom with hopes of sending forward graduates with greater clarity of information than I had upon graduation.
Between 2007 and 2008, several big life events happened at once. In August, the college got a new Coordinator of Cosmetology, Mrs. Darlene Cope; in November, while at an esthetics conference, I received a job offer from Dr. Mark Lees; and the following May, I got married.
Although I truly enjoyed my work with state board students, the prospect of working with a Milady textbook author was certainly alluring. So, in August 2008, I moved to Pensacola, Florida to become Director of Education for Mark Lees Skin Care. This proved to be an amazing opportunity as I was blessed to travel the professional beauty circuit, see some of America’s most prominent cities, build my knowledge through collaborations, and meet industry icons such as Denise Fuller who, in 2010, encouraged me to write an article for Les Nouvelles Esthetiques that remains one of my favorites. (By the way, did you know
that esthetics in its current form has existed in the United States for at least 120 years? Its origins aren’t exclusive to Europe and contrary to popular belief, it’s not a young profession in the US. The article is about a centuryold esthetics textbook proving this.)
Still, eager for my next challenge, I approached Dr. Lees in 2011 to get his thoughts on the postgraduate training and test for CIDESCO. Not only did he encourage me to move forward with the idea, but he even sponsored the effort. With this, I went to the Institute of Cosmetology, Esthetics, and Massage in Houston, Texas and had the pleasure of meeting and learning with founder, Kathy Driscoll and CIDESCO secretary, Margrit Altenburg. And thankfully, in April 2012 – with lots of prayer, study, and practice – I passed the international exam and received the diploma in July. Then, being as I can’t sit still for two seconds, I returned to college in August and, four years later in 2016, completed a Bachelor’s in Strategic Communication.
Immediately afterward, my family’s new military commitment required an exit from my job at MLSC and the beginning of many moves across several states. During this period, I found myself working the retail cosmetics game at Ulta stores in Texas and Arkansas – not what I originally planned, but I got to educate newly hired estheticians, stay in practice, and collect some coollooking licenses. The effort was shortlived, however, when in 2017, the blessing of my daughter’s birth changed everything. I was able to work until May 2018 and then
2
paused my career to stay home with the little one (one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, would do it again in a second).
Then in July 2020, in the midst of the global viral dilemma, we were living in north Georgia when I received a phone call from Mrs. Cope. She asked if I could return to the community college in NC to be an adjunct esthetics instructor. With the prospect of a three-hour commute and being unable to willfully break away from my three-year-old, I turned down the offer. Then, as if by Divine prompting, she called back a couple months later. At this point, I was already pursuing a Master’s in Theology, desiring to return to my roots in skincare education, and in need of additional income. As such, I was able to finally talk myself into the notion of childcare and accept the offer.
in NC, international travel with a Godly significant other (I got to experience the salt and mud of Israel’s Dead Sea), precious time with my daughter, the near completion of my graduate degree, and more gifts than I can fit into an article.
But one last thing before concluding: In the usual manner of poetic Divinity, something happened in January of this year. Exactly twenty years after my first job as an adjunct esthetics instructor, upon Mrs. Cope’s retirement and now at the age of 41, I was
formally offered the position of Coordinator of Cosmetology Programs at that same local school in Flat Rock where it all began, Blue Ridge Community College. I accepted.
Fast-forward to the present: The following four years have brought more transitions, life changes, trials and blessings. And although marital challenges led to a mutual departure, I’ve received much grace in the form of continued work, relocation to my hometown
Thank you to Denise Fuller for her encouragement in writing, education, and job growth. Thank you to the National Aesthetics Spa Network for the honor of being counted among the industry greats featured in the twenty-year celebration issues. And thank you to everyone who has taken a moment to read a story about a guy who has received better than he deserves. I hope that, like me, you are blessed beyond measure.

Celebrating Industry Connection
Alexander’s Aesthetics was founded in 1980 by our ancestor, Alexander Desy, who had a striking passion for skincare. Alex was frustrated by the amount of time it took to shop for aesthetic products and education, feeling it interfered with the most passionate aspects of skincare.
To resolve this issue, Alex opened Alexander’s Aesthetics, a one-stop shop providing highquality products and educational services to aestheticians. No longer did aestheticians need to spend numerous hours shopping for their supplies and coursework. They now had one place to purchase wholesale supplies and course materials necessary for their careers, allowing them more time to do what they loved. Alex established a mission for Alexander’s Aesthetics that we continue today: to provide professional aestheticians with superior supplies, excellent customer service, and essential education.
When Alex passed away, his mother, Margaret Desy, took over Alexander’s Aesthetics. Margaret worked hard to keep her son’s successful business alive.
When the time came for her to retire, she mentioned to her cousins, Cee and Pat, at a family gathering, that she wanted to sell Alexander’s Aesthetics. Cee and Pat were looking for another venture as they had both recently retired. Margaret, having successfully succeeded Alex, passed the helm to her cousins, Cee and Pat, in 1999.
Cee was a retired travel agent and Pat a retired engineer from Lockheed Martin. Both had years of experience working in corporate environments and wanted to explore the small family business world. At the time, they were looking for a small business to keep them busy as their children were grown and moved on. Little did they know that their strategic efforts, business savvy, and the surge of the internet would expand the business nationwide.
In 2016, Pat & Cee’s daughter, Wendi, and her husband, Scott, opened Alexander’s Aesthetics II in Colorado. Wendi and Scott were previously in the high-tech industry and, after growing tired of the uncertainty
4
with small startups and the tech industry, they agreed to open a second location in their home state of Colorado. This would help customers east of Colorado to receive packages sooner and provide customer support to other areas of the country. The biggest hesitation that Wendi and Scott had was how to do business with family and still maintain their wonderful family relationship. After working with a mentor, a plan was devised on how to successfully do this, and this is when the Colorado location began.
It has been a true gift to not only work together in a healthy way but also to be part of a family legacy and keep Alex’s original vision alive. We love to serve all estheticians by providing high-quality products we believe in and stand behind, customer service that you can trust and depend on, and education to keep our clients’ skills advancing in this ever-changing industry. We pride ourselves on being 100% family-owned and operated. alexanders-aesthetics.com

Everything You Need to Know When Reading A Sunscreen Label
Do your clients feel intimated by the formal information on the label of a sunscreen? This guide aims to demystify the jargon and help you walk them through the label to make informed choices.
Keep in mind that sunscreens are Over-the-Counter (OTC) drugs in the United States, so much of the label is standardized and regulated by the FDA. That’s why sunscreens have a “Drug Facts” label on the back of their package.
Deciphering the Label:
SPF (Sun Protection Factor): SPF measures a sunscreen’s ability to protect against UVB rays, which penetrate the skin’s surface, causing sunburn and contributing to skin cancer risk. The SPF is determined by a specific testing protocol that is required by the FDA. Be sure your clients look for an SPF of at least 30. SPF 40 blocks 97.5% of UVB rays. Higher SPFs over 50 offer marginally increased protection. Broad Spectrum: This indicates that the product offers protection against both UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin, causing long-term damage such as premature aging and skin cancer. UVA rays are present 365 days a year and can penetrate glass. Some products show a PA rating. PA is a Japanese system that measures protection against UVA rays. It is not required in the U.S. nor recognized by FDA.
By Kathleen Dwyer
Water Resistance: This is determined by a special SPF test and indicates how long the sunscreen maintains its SPF while swimming or sweating. There are only choices allowed by the FDA – 40 minutes or 80 minutes.
Active Ingredients: These are the ingredients that give a sunscreen its efficacy, and can be seen at the top of the “Drug Facts” label on the back of the package. There are only two approved Mineral active ingredients: Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide. All other active sunscreen ingredients are Chemical sunscreen filters.
Inactive Ingredients: This section lists all of the ingredients in the product other than the sunscreen actives. For drug products, including sunscreens, inactive ingredients are always listed in alphabetical order. Why Mineral Sunscreen?
• Broad Spectrum Protection: Mineral sunscreens provide broadspectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays. In fact, of all sunscreen ingredients, Zinc Oxide offers the broadest range of UVA/UVB coverage.
•Gentleness: Mineral sunscreens are ideal for sensitive skin and postprocedure use as they are less likely to cause irritation or allergic reactions.
•Immediate Protection: Mineral sunscreens start to work as soon as they are applied, though it is best to apply any sunscreen prior to going out in the sun.
10
•Reef-Friendly: sunscreens are considered safer marine ecosystems than chemical alternatives.
•Reflection vs Absorption: Chemical sunscreens work by absorbing UV energy and releasing it as heat. In addition, they have been shown to absorb into the bloodstream. Mineral sunscreens do not have this risk because they sit on top of the skin and reflect/refract UV radiation away.
With knowledge of SPF, ingredients, and broad-spectrum protection, your client can confidently choose a sunscreen for vacation or everyday use. Remember, consistent sunscreen application is key to maintaining healthy, radiant skin for years to come!

HEALTHY LASHES
BYLORA
CONDON
How often do you think about the cleanliness of lashes or the lash line? For many women, if they can’t see it, it doesn’t cross their mind often. For estheticians, we often think about cleanliness. Thorough cleansing of eyelashes is important especially with lash extensions. Here are a few tips to prevent infections or excess shedding of lashes due to improper cleaning.
Prevent needless eye infections by thoroughly removing all traces of eye makeup and the face every night. The purpose of eyelashes is to collect dirt, dust and debris in the environment to prevent it from accumulating in your eye area. If you add foundation, eyeshadow, eyeliner and mascara, that is a lot of potential buildup along the lash line. Add lash extensions and now those extensions are creating an even larger area to collect bacteria. Gently working in oil-based removers works better at removing waterproof and long-lasting mascara. Be gentle because pulling eyelashes out before they’re ready can damage the follicle and permanently stop or slow down regrowth.
Common eye infections include blepharitis, an inflammation of the eyelids caused by bacteria. It can cause redness, irritation, itching, and a gritty sensation in the eye.
Conjunctivitis or Pink Eye is an inflammation or infection of the conjunctiva. It can cause redness, itching, discharge, and tearing. The eye might get enough build-up to crust and shut the eye.
A stye can be a painful flesh-colored or red lump near the edge of the eyelid that may resemble a pimple when the oil gland becomes infected and swollen. This can be common when lash extensions are applied improperly and block the hair.
Improperly applied lash extensions can cause trichiasis where the eyelashes grow inward instead of outward. This causes irritation, scratching
of the cornea, and increased risk of infections. It feels like you constantly have something poking your eye or scratching the eyeball.
When cleaning, a face wipe is not enough. If using a face wipe to remove the top layer of makeup, follow up with a face wash and water. You can use your hands, washcloth, or a brush to get in between the lashes. I suggest using a small brush with water and lash cleaner for the whole eye area if you have extensions. Before applying extensions make sure the lashes are thoroughly cleansed so potential irritants do not become imbedded with the extension.
If you’re using strip lashes with latex glue, get a magnifying mirror to thoroughly remove the glue because it dissolves into clumps that remain on the lash line. Be very careful to not pull-out eyelashes while removing the strip.
Accumulated debris and oils along the lash line lash can cause itching, irritation, and discomfort. Proper cleansing removes these irritants, promoting comfort and preventing potential allergic reactions. Remember that just because you can’t see the dirt, debris or bacteria, does not mean lashes are clean and sanitary. Following the outlined steps above is the only way to ensure lashes are clean and the very best to prevent infections.

Unlocking the Potential of Men’s Skin Care Procedures: A Guide for Professionals
By Stephanie Holvick
In an era where wellness and self-care are not just trends but essential aspects of lifestyle, the skin care industry has witnessed a paradigm shift. There’s an increasing awareness and demand among men for skin care treatments that cater specifically to their needs, challenging the traditional perception that such treatments are exclusively for women. However, tapping into this burgeoning market requires a nuanced understanding of what men seek in skin care procedures and how to market these services effectively. This article explores effective strategies for skin care professionals looking to attract a male clientele, focusing on treatments like microdermabrasion, micro channeling, and “Brotox.”
The Market Shift:
Men’s Growing Interest in Skin Care
Recent trends indicate a significant upswing in men’s interest in their skincare routines and professional treatments. This increasing demand is partly driven by a broader cultural shift toward holistic wellness and the destigmatization of men’s grooming practices. However, despite this growing interest, there remains a notable gap in how skin care services are marketed towards men. The key to bridging this gap lies in understanding the male perspective on skin
care – men seek results-oriented treatments that offer clear benefits without necessarily being labeled as “pampering.”
Microdermabrasion: A Manly Approach to Skin Care
Microdermabrasion stands out as an ideal entry point for men into the realm of skin care treatments. This non-invasive procedure, known for its effectiveness in rejuvenating skin texture and appearance, aligns perfectly with the male clientele’s desire for straightforward, results-driven care. The procedure’s appeal lies in its simplicity and the immediate improvement it delivers, making it a practical option for men who may be skeptical about more traditional facial treatments. Positioning microdermabrasion as a maintenance rather than a luxury can further enhance its appeal to the male market.
MicroChanneling: Targeting the Results-Oriented Client
Similarly, micro channeling presents another compelling option for men. This procedure, which stimulates collagen production and improves skin texture, directly addresses common skin concerns such as acne scarring and signs of aging. For the male client who values efficacy over experience, highlighting the tangible benefits of micro channeling – improved skin health, a more youthful appearance – can be a powerful draw. It’s essential to communicate these benefits in clear, straightforward language that emphasizes the procedure’s value as an investment in one’s appearance and well-being.
Brotox: Botox Rebranded for the Modern Man
The rise of “Brotox,” or Botox treatments for men, reflects a broader normalization
17
of cosmetic procedures among male demographics. Marketing Botox to men involves dispelling myths and emphasizing the practical benefits: a more youthful appearance, reduced fine lines, and a fresher face in a competitive professional environment. By rebranding Botox as a routine part of men’s grooming and health regimen, skin care professionals can tap into a growing market eager for age-management solutions.
Strategies for Attracting Male Clients
To capture the male market effectively, skin care professionals must adopt a tailored approach to marketing and communication. Here are some strategies to consider:
•Educate and Inform: Use your platforms to educate men about the benefits of skin care treatments. Focus on the science, the results, and the maintenance aspect rather than luxury or indulgence.
•Redefine the Narrative: Challenge traditional perceptions by showcasing real stories and testimonials from male clients. Visibility fosters acceptance and curiosity.
•Customize Your Services: Offer packages or treatments specifically designed for men, highlighting the practicality and benefits of each procedure.
•Create a Welcoming Environment: Ensure that your clinic or spa is marketed as a gender-neutral space where men feel welcome and comfortable seeking treatment.
Conclusion
The growing interest among men in skin care presents a valuable opportunity for professionals in the field. By focusing on results-oriented treatments like microdermabrasion, micro channeling, and Brotox, and adopting marketing strategies that speak directly to male clients’ needs and preferences, skin care professionals can significantly expand their clientele. The key to success lies in understanding the male perspective on skin care, offering practical solutions, and creating an inclusive environment that welcomes all clients.

EssEntial Oils fOr HOrmOnal BalancE
By Jimm Harrison
Hormones are the musical notes composing the intricate melody of the human body’s symphony. That may seem overly poetic, though is a reasonable analogy. Hormones are messenger molecules. They are created within glands and other organs. When released, they bind to cell receptors and communicate with cells by delivering messages. This message tells the cell how to react or what activity to produce. Hormones have specific function, though for some, the functions may include many. In spa, hormone balance discussions typically focus on sex hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. There are other important hormones that affect our wellness, including adrenaline, cortisol, insulin, melatonin and oxytocin. Truthfully, all of the many hormones require balance within the body.
Hormone-like Action of Essential Oils
Essential oils are often said to have hormone-
like or neurotransmitter-like activity. They bind and communicate with cells similar to hormones. Receptors on cells are like a lock and the essential oil, like a hormone, is the key. If the “key” fits, the message is received by the cell, triggering its response or action.
Essential oils in relation to hormone activity is often misunderstood. While essential oils are not hormones themselves, they have been suggested to support hormonal balance by modulating cellular responses.
Essential Oils for Female Reproductive Issues
A 2020 study by Sakhteman et al., sheds light on the promising role of essential oil constituents in addressing women’s hormonal health and reproductive system. In this study many essential oil compounds were found to have receptor binding activity with receptors crucial for hormonal balance. The study provided many examples. What
isn’t completely clear, is the function of the binding essential oil molecule. Essential oils are often said to mimic hormone activity, though this is relatively unclear and not at all well established.
Clary Sage and the Phytoestrogen Sclareol
The essential oil of clary sage (Salvia sclarea) has long been noted as ideal for the balance of many female reproductive issues such as PMS, cramping, mood swings and menopausal discomfort. Clary sage contains a phytoestrogen, an estrogen-like compound derived from plants. The phytoestrogen is able to bind to the estrogen receptor and has been long noted as the reason clary sage is able to alleviate many complications to the female cycle. It is also contraindicated during pregnancy, and conditions of excess estrogen.
An article written by Robert Tisserand in 2010 explains the lack of evidence that clary sage and sclareol are estrogenic. The hormonal balancing properties of clary sage also lacks evidence. This doesn’t mean that clary sage is not good for hormonal balance or its symptoms. It just means that its properties aren’t due to estrogenic activity. Robert Tisserand also dismissed the idea that lavender is estrogenic saying it is “not a ‘hormone disruptor’, and cannot cause breast growth in young boys (or girls of any age).”
Balancing Hormones and Relieving Hormonally Related Conditions
No doubt, hormone imbalance, especially in women, can be quite disruptive. Rather than looking to essential oils to produce hormone-like effects, use essential oils to bring whole body balance. Especially by regulating the stress response. This is an area well supported through clinical use and evidence-based studies.
Too often statements of skin sensitivity or acneic outbreaks will be blamed on hormones. Accurate, but why the hormonal imbalance? Various factors may contribute, such as:
•Endocrine disrupters - compounds found in preservatives, pesticides and plastics
•Diet - foods can influence hormonal balance as well as may be a cause of hormonal imbalance - especially when foods have added hormones (like beef and milk)
•Obesity - it’s known that obesity causes several health and emotional imbalances
•Stress - along with the “fight or flight” response, stress may be the most hormonally disruptive
•Allergies - hormones are linked to mast cells and histamine release.
Rather than trying to find the essential oil with a matching hormonal activity, it’s best, through holistic evaluation, to find and address the cause of the hormonal imbalance.
Hormone Balance with Essential Oils
The essential oil of clary sage has historically been one of the most effective for hormonally related issues. Cramps, spasms, pain, mood swings and more have been resolved using clary sage. As mentioned earlier, it was believed and proven inaccurate to be due to the phytoestrogen sclareol. What makes clary sage work?
If you look at the chemical structure of clary sage you’ll find the answer. Like lavender and ylang ylang, clary sage has a high amount of linalyl acetate and linalool. These two compounds are extremely beneficial to reduce:
• Pain
• Spasms
• Tension
• Stress Levels
• Mood Swings
Lavender and clary sage are often used for stress reduction, fight or flight response and nervous tension. They resolve these conditions, partially, through the activity of linalyl acetate and linalool. There are many other compounds known to reduce stress and tension. The choices are also vast to reduce muscle spasms and cramps. We shouldn’t relate the properties of essential oils only to individual molecules. The action of essential oils is a synergistic response to the whole oil’s chemical composition.

Vitex and menopause
The essential oil, Vitex agnus castus (chaste tree), was researched by Barbara Lucks (2002) with encouraging results in reducing symptoms of menopause. The study concluded that vitex had these benefits:
•Decrease or elimination of hot flashes and night sweats
•Improved emotional stability and cognitive ability
•Improved vaginal tone and lubrication
•More comfortable intercourse
•Moderation of irregular periods and flooding
Vitex was also used successfully to assist in regulating the menstrual cycle, and relieving breast pain and symptoms of PMS. The actual physiological activity or the compounds responsible have not been fully identified.
Formulating for hormonal conditions
When considering essential oils for hormone balance, first resolve or identify the many conditions that can cause hormonal imbalance. Your analysis will become the focus of your essential oil choices. Lowering stress-related fight or flight responses can be highly beneficial. This is an over-active sympathetic nervous response that compromises breathing, causes hypertension and disrupts healthy digestion. Using essential oils shown to raise the parasympathetic function (“rest and digest”) brings the body into a stable, relaxed, and healthy homeostatic state.
Start by incorporating essential oils commonly used to address hormonal imbalance symptoms:
•Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea)
•Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
•Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens)
•Cape chamomile (Eriocephalus punctulatus) or Roman chamomile (Anthemis nobilis)
Other beneficial oils would include:
•Virginia Cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana)
- raises parasympathetic activity (reducing fight or flight); anti-inflammatory
•Hinoki Wood (Chamaecyparis obtusa)raises parasympathetic activity, anti-inflammatory
•Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata) - Relieves stress and nervous tension; antispasmodic
(reduce cramping), anti-inflammatory
•Spearmint (Mentha spicata) - pain relief, antispasmodic
•Rose (Rosa damascena) - a do-all essential oil valued for regulating all conditions of the female cycle
Formulate for the client, not the symptom
There are so many essential oils that can be effective in reducing hormonal related symptoms. The essential oils mentioned in this article may have direct hormonal balancing activity. Because the evidence is weak, it would be better to focus on related issues like stress, environmental conditions and immunity. Choose your essential oils for the person, not just the symptoms. Essential oils are amazing and adapt to the needs of the person. The more you know about your oils the more effective your choices will be.
